I also really liked that one from DGK's pics too Fenrir. That artist has put up some ridiculously cute stuff. I liked their pictures of Teresa and Flora as well. Just too cute. The 3D Irene looks exactly like a walking character from ff7 only a little less pixelated. Pretty cool. The game would consist of a company called shinra putting youki instead of Mako into their soldiers.

Glad you guys liked the Isley pic :D. Chiba has warm fuzzies (as opposed to cold pricklies mind you). @Mikke From some angles Isley has a what looks like a mouth and from others he does not. I thought about shading the it in and making it obvious but I decided that since it was ambiguous I would just leave a hint of it.

you used much darker colors as valduran ane me and i think that was a good idea, since the darker colors look a lot better imo. good job :heh:

Raph's armour looks a lot heavier than most claymores. Very archaic design, pointing to how old she must be. Could she be third generation claymore?

I ended up making the armor a lot darker later on, for more contrast. The hair/skin/scar i really didn't know what color they should be. I worked the most on the armor so the rest i just did really fast, heh. I'll try and adjust it :D

*sighs* No matter how much I try though, I can't draw freely like most folks. Who was it that drew those last sketches before chiba's Isley? Those don't seem complicated at all but the style seems very thorough and developed. Whenever I draw something I gotta still use stick figures and reference images. :upset:

The programme is GIMP-2, kinda like photoshop but a little more complicated, still can't work my way with it smoothly :rolleyes:

I've been reading Angel Densetsu and Yagi's art is pretty bad at the beginning. Skipping forward to the middle of the series theres a huge improvement. The story is good from the start though.

It was also interesting how some of the characters faces are also in claymore. so far I've seen Clare, Tabitha, Elena, Raki, the noisy girl beside the statue and the falcon sword guy. the main character also looks like a yoma sometimes :p

Maybe its the shape of her smile that is making the center of the face disappear.

I liked the black and white version better, just because that liquid filter gives it a weird dimensionality especially on the grey. I really like the pose as it was quite dynamic. The style of the black blocking in reminds me of Frank Miller's stuff for some reason.

I use 3D Max Studio V9. I also know a very lil about "Maya", those both are the best programs for 3D art in public. Both been used in Movie production. But here is my advise, Don't work on both of em.. it gets so confusing :heh: Too many stuff to remember :eyespin:

I think it doesn't take bombastic drawing skills to be a modern manga artist, or at least enough to do good fan art. It's more about the knowledge of the softwere nowdays.

People who are naturally talented are a rarity. :)

Everyone has their own taste in art just like they do in music. Just because something is rendered well does not mean people will like it. How many of you have heard technically very talented musicians whose music is boring? I sure have. Sometimes simple is best. The interesting thing to me about art in relation to comics and manga is that people are not focused on the art, they are focused on the story. A comic book artist told me "people will forgive bad art if the story is good." I know this is the case with some of the series I have read. However in fan art people are looking at the image itself so it is held to a different standard than even the original manga itself. Even fan art by people who "cannot draw" looks better than some of the panels in claymore and definitely better than many in Angel Densetsu (check it out if you need a confidence booster).

Yagi makes a lot of mistakes from a technical point of view regarding consistency with his own characters. But it does not matter because it is about the story, not the art. Someone else told me that style has something to do with an artists consistent mistakes and there is something to that. I had a lot of fun reading angel densetsu because you can see Yagi's style really develop over time, especially when looking at the first few issues. Some of Yagi's panels in Claymore are phenomenal, especially the AB's and major character entrances, but many of the other panels have no where near the amount of work and by themselves look awful.

@Tempo: If you did want to get proportions right you could always just steal the proportion from another drawing and dress them up in something else. Even the best manga and comic artists use reference material like crazy. As Pablo Picasso said, "Bad artists copy. Great artists steal."

Im not a pro, especially at drawing - I suck ^^
But I do have a lil' experience in 3d cg, so...

You overlightened the scene, and you have very crappy materials. The guard's shape is not that bad, but full of nasty artifacts. It seems like you drew the spline, extruded it, and moved some vertices for roundness. Possibly subdivided it, cant say for sure.
I suggest you to remodel it with polys - you can use the spline as a reference. Try previewing subdivision while you model all along.

The pommel and grip are detailless and look crappy. At least apply some texture to the grip. Remodel the pommel, it doesnt look like that in manga\anime.
The scene composition is bad. Also, try direct light, not omni. 1 light isnt enough. Play 2-3 lights with different intensity, color, and angle until it looks good even with grey materials. Same with camera position.

I suggest you make a nice Claymore-style background template in PS (or whatever raster editor you use), say with white background, and for each character customize the template accordingly and _glue_ the sword render onto the background. Youll get one pic for each sword. You can try making different camera angles for each character, if you feel like it.
Use reasonable resolution to post here, 640x480 or 800x600 would be enough. Of course, make your background and renders in decent resolutions, at least 1600x1200, so you can scale them down to post here.
Its always good to keep an overkill resolution just in case. Maybe someone would want to use your works as wallpapers ;)

Oh, and the blades look like they have been cut out from an aluminium foil - volumeless. Fix it. I suggest you visit some 3d cg forums and look at works of REAL pro's.
There are lots of awesome swords\axes\daggers works you can pick the right ideas from.

I hope I gave you the right direction, so lets wait for the next update? ;)

Dude, you just made me interested in the imageboard again. It`s seems that, from what I can understand, it´s where Yagi works. it also appears that he has an assistent who is the number 5 assistent. But i really don´t know more.
By the way, I realized one thing. Yagi has glasses and Rubel has glasses very much similar to him so it appears Yagi may have based his characters from assistents or friends. :rolleyes:
