@Riful: He probably did use a wrestler or an anatomy book of some kind. I am still impressed at his lighting of the muscles topography. I guess I usually expect much less from Yagi's figures (especially in the long shots) so it is a real shock. The guy does fantastic work when he gets the time too it seems. His AB's are great and the covers have been fantastic.

Hope I'm in the right area. I was torn between the "Request a gif/avatar/signature " and this one.

Now, I don't know how many people here play PC games, Team Fortress 2 to be exact, but you're allowed to have sprays (spraypaints) of an image that you can spray around the level. All of mine are of Teresa. (Who would have guessed!?)

So my question, or request rather, is if anyone has the artistic skills that I sadly lack, in making a spray/decal that I could use in game. I use photoshop a bit, but I can never start anything from scratch. I always have to take one photo, and merge it with another, which sometimes doesn't come out how I want it.

I'm looking for something along the lines of funny, rather than serious. I tried to find some example pics, but I came up empty handed. All I can do is explain one that I've seen. :(

Example:

Someone had a cartoon spray of 2 girls, one looked like Miria, the other could pass as Galatea. Galatea was standing over Miria, bonking her on the head with a foam baseball bat. If your familiar with Team Fortress 2 any, it would represent a Scout class bonking another class with his bat.

It was cute and funny, which is what I'm looking for. (Instead of Galatea and Miria, it could be Teresa and another.) I know there have been cute and funny Claymore comics posted in this thread, so hopefully you all don't mind the request rant. It may be interesting to see what others come up with as well!

Get rid of the faded head-shots in the sky. Since they're cropped at the bottom they really screw up the flow of the clouds, and in general just don't really seem to help the image.

The statue in the background is done well, really nice.

The foreground view of Clare+Teresa needs some work; it could use better blending with the background, and there are a few extraction flaws, especially around Teresa's cloak.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! I'm glad you liked it :D. Warm fuzzies everywhere. I am not very good at coloring stuff in yet, though I plan to be some day soon. I also struggle with controlling my inking to get really dynamic line weights. I need to figure out a system for that kind of stuff as I am usually just guessing. I've been reading some interesting tutorials but it is probably just a matter of observing, copying and replicating over and over and... For some reason there are weird parts that give me the hardest time. Like getting the sword straight... and even then I didn't ink it right so it looks scribbled.

If anyone wants to have a go at coloring it decently I can put up a black and white so they can make me look silly for making the color's so flat...

That Galatea reminds me a lot of Lenalee from D.Grey Man. Fun Colors. You really get a feel for the different textures in that picture. *Chiba needs to learn how to color stuff*. Okay okay, I am working on coloring this one, but as known, my coloring struggles a little bit. It takes me much much longer to ink a drawing than to pencil it. And it takes me so much longer to color something than to ink it. So somewhere in the middle I kind of lost interest. I was going to draw a background too, so maybe I will keep working on it. I am glad I put clothes on them. If you can't tell what is happening, Galatea is giving Clare a shoulder rub/youki massage while sitting on her Miria chair. Those cloaked Claymores can be anywhere... hope it's not too inappropriate...

In this case I hope a little bit of constructive criticism isn't unwelcome...
(You actually said something similar to me once a long time ago.)

It's that while your forms are outstanding, and the detail work in some of your pieces is also quite amazing, the faces are often somewhat bland in comparison to everything else. (This one, for example (http://forums.animesuki.com/album.php?albumid=220&pictureid=1909), amazing body detail, but the face bears little resemblance to Riful and is somewhat unappealing)
I'm not sure if it's the same for everyone, but with me, the first thing my eye is drawn to when I look at art of a human is the face. A good face can salvage a somewhat mediocre body, but the reverse is unfortunately not true in my experience.

In your case, you could probably get away with it if the forms of your bodies were less excellent, so you are a victim of your own skill in one sense. :D
I would suggest just spending some time refining your own style of drawing faces and maybe worrying less about the body details for now.
(Though when drawing Claymore art, studying closely the unique details of each character's face as drawn by Yagi would also be a good idea. Yes I know they are hard to spot, but they exist :D)

So anyway, sorry for the criticism. As I said, I hope it isn't unwelcome. :(
Unfortunately I'm probably going to pass on coloring this one, as I would be too extremely tempted to completely redraw the faces.


Edit: Oh, and BishounoTeresa... Love this one of Teresa. Very awesome. The coloring and shading on it is pretty much where I aspire to be someday. :D

@Valduran: Maybe it is because I don't try to replicate Yagi's style that brings issues with the faces? I certainly do not draw faces the way he does. I'll look how he draws his characters but I rarely try to replicate it as I am searching for my own style. I'll look at character traits, like Galatea's long eye lashes, Miria's circular eyes with a pointy eye lash on the edge, Mirias lips which are more full than the other fab 4, Helen's angular eyes and sharp eye brows and two drooping eye lashes from the side of her eye, etc... Maybe I am just characterizing them too much from that information for people to understand who they are supposed to be. Really Yagi's proportions stay pretty simmilar for most of his characters, especially females, and he varries small things (like having Jean with no eye brows).

I am not sure where I am making the mistakes either. For instance on the last one of Miria you colored for me you mentioned that you completely redrew Miria's face. To see where I was off I did a side by side comparison and the main difference I saw was that the top lip was smaller and you extended the eyebrows. Both changes were pretty minor, and Miria having short angular eyebrows was one of the things I did notice from looking at her as was fuller lips. You also thickened the top eye lid and on closer inspection made the jaw pointier. So maybe I am just not picky enough about the characters and replicating Yagi's proportions. I certainly do not use his style of measurements for instance. I put my mouths closer to the edge as I do not do his trade mark upper lip, less of an angle on the cheek, less detail on the eyes (unless I am drawing big), put my eyes higher up than he does as he uses child like face proportions and I prefer adult ones. Is it mainly that I am not attempting to replicate his style then?

I can see what bothers you about proportions on Miria's face as I characterized the eye and dropped her chin lower than I should of to get a goofy expression. I thought about changing that one but decided against it because it was the first part I drew. I also drew her pony tail with a scunchy where as yagi puts it higher up and has it cascade down more. I certainly could attempt to replicate Yagi's proportions if I wanted to using references and such. I just have been working on simplifying my female form recently and figured I may as well do some fan art instead of stuff I just put in the pile with everything else and forget about.

(Note that I am currently speaking directly from the insensitive art critic in me, so please don't taking of this as a put-down. I'm just attempting to be as plain and honest as possible)

Well, in one sense it is because you don't attempt to replicate Yagi's style that the faces are less recognizable... but it is also more than that. For instance... the shape of the face is VERY important. Probably the most important thing in keeping a character unique in manga style artwork, even though it seems so subtle. For instance: Miria's face is a gently sloping oval, with a slightly triangular jaw and a flat chin. (here's a good example: http://www.onemanga.com/Claymore/80/08/)
Of course, Yagi himself doesn't always draw the faces with their proper shapes and thus it's quite common for the characters to be recognizable mostly only by their hair.

On your Miria, the head was a little too round, with the jaw being too flat, and the chin pointy instead of flat. (Though I admit that I didn't do a perfect job of fixing it.)
Note that what I meant when I said I redrew it was that even though I kept the basic features pretty much the same, I erased yours and redrew them to match as well as I could because the original ones were messy. It's true most of my changes were pretty subtle, it's just the change to the jaw that made it look more like Miria.

In terms of mistakes, the left jaw made a pretty major curve, and the right jaw was a completely straight line. This was unfortunately a pretty big mistake as symmetry is also very important in a face. Also there was the iris of the eye on the right being much larger than the one on the left.
Concerning the eyebrows your original ones were probably closer to the way Miria's really are, but they unfortunately weren't very feminine and actually didn't even look much like eyebrows(sorry! :heh:) so that's why I changed them.

Now, mostly... the problems with your faces aren't the mistakes. I wasn't really saying that in my previous post. It's basically just a matter of experience in learning how to add subtle detail to faces without over-complicating them, and knowing which lines to subtly emphasize and which to reduce or leave out all together.
For instance, usually, the lower eyelid should be very thin or left out entirely in the case of a zoomed-out low detail face. Not sure how to really explain why on this one because it's a very subtle difference, but you might say that it's because leaving a thick line there creates a somewhat inappropriate shadow unless you are molding it to hint at eyelashes.
By contrast, the lower lip line should almost always be thicker when viewing the face from normal angles, because there is suppose to be the impression of a slight shadow there.

Anyway, I don't pretend to have ultimate knowledge of the only way to do these things... this is just the basic experience I've gained from my studies and practice.

So to summarize:

1) I would recommend working more on ensuring that the shapes of your faces are distinct, unique, and symmetrical.

2) When drawing Claymore fan art it's just my personal preference to try to match the faces as closely to Yagi's style as possible. So even though I think that's the way to do it, I'm not criticizing you for not doing so.

3) The details on the faces is something that I can't exactly pinpoint for you, because then I would be forcing my own style on to yours. All I can say is that I didn't even have a style of my own before I started studying the styles of other far more advanced artists. And while you are certainly farther along than when I started, that seems to somewhat hold true for you as well. At this point in time it just seems that your faces are still a bit generic. Lacking true 'character', so to speak. But even then, you have shown a few examples where that's not the case, so I'm not going to emphasize this point as strongly.

But I know you've got the talent, it's just a matter of practice for you. With me, the reason my faces have come such a long way since I began is because that has been the focus of my efforts, and unfortunately I've neglected the bodies along the way, so now I'm forced to put more effort into refining that aspect of my style. With you I'm just saying it seems to be the other way around.

(And btw, I don't especially pretend to have mastered faces yet either, this one of Kane is probably the first I've done so far that I actually consider satisfactory, and I rely alot on my coloring and shading to provide the detail: http://forums.animesuki.com/album.php?albumid=494&pictureid=5262)


Finally, I'm very sorry for the critical tone of this post... It's just a bit of a pain to try and put everything politely when attempting constructive criticism... and sometimes it's not even a good idea to do so.
Keep in mind that I still greatly admire your skills as an artist. This is just my way of attempting to help you improve upon your weaker areas. And If I'm not helping, feel free to give me an e-slap. ;)

I look at criticism pretty seriously so I always have to investigate what is messing with people. I just opened up the Miria pic to see where the problem was with the jaw, and I can certainly see that I have one side straighter than the other. I decided to check if I had blown the symmetry or not, so I cut and pasted and found that with the centerline the sides actually did match exactly even with the straight line, which kind of blew my mind as I assumed it would not from the tilted angle it was at. I was able to check the eye sizes at the same time and the irises were a little different though their placement was also absolutely symmetrical. One eye was a little bit more round than the other, but I usually like to draw one eye squinting a little bit as perfect symmetry of expressions is boring for me. I'll often tilt one side of a mouth as well. Maybe I should draw bigger originals as this one was only 5 inches across and those eyes were tiny to draw. That was my problem for the irises.

On both Riful and Miria's face I did something that apparently was not understood visually; I tilted their faces down so they were looking up at the viewer, instead of looking straight on. I fell in love with this angle of a face from my 10th grade English Class where there was a really cute girl who somehow always managed that pose while she was reading and then held it when she looked up over the top of her book to do a little bit of eye contact flirting. *sigh* From that angle the face becomes more round at the chin and the features drop down and get closer together, the eye brows noticeably point in a V even without an angry expression. I didn't do it very well on Riful's but you can see from where I placed her ears that her face is tilted downwards. She was also squinting and had a drawl to her mouth, all of which I intended to show attitude but was apparently not rendered well enough as people said these were all proportion issues, not an expression and angle. That picture has been edited a bit from the original because people complained about the eyes which were more where I wanted them before, but they were getting more complaints. Obviously I have not been able to communicate the tilted forward head pose yet as everyone assumes I drew the jaw line incorrectly. It is interesting that the things I intentionally and deliberately think about to communicate something are the things that are seen as mistakes.

I am not exactly sure what to do as I have little intention of replicating Yagi's proportions at the moment. I actually really dislike some of his proportions, especially in the first part of the story. His art is really hit and miss but since I am in it for the story it doesn't matter :D. His feet are so all over the place it is insane, half the time the big toe and the little toe are the same size with the longest toes in the middle and then other times they are more accurate. There are some other ones that really catch my eye, like his arm lengths when he draws characters in the distance.

His awakened beings are phenomenal, but I do not have the knowledge of tones to create the textures that he does. It is interesting to me that the parts I picked to look most like Miria, like the eyebrows or the lips, were the parts that needed changing the most. I have noticed when I do not look at references for almost anything I actually get the least complaints about my art, which really blows my mind. So I am not sure what to do because most of the "mistakes" I make are seen as something I did wrong instead of something I did deliberately to communicate an expression, character, pose, or an attitude. Maybe I am trying to take something subtle and real and put it in a characterized form where it does not communicate well. I might be using too much real life anatomy for a cartoon rendering, for instance when I draw an opened mouth I will drop the jaw as well which is something anime/manga rarely does.

Yep, from personal experience I highly recommend drawing things at a large size and then reducing them for display. It does require you put in a little more effort, but the end result is usually alot cleaner and hopefully more detailed.

I see what you were saying about the tilted faces, I really like that angle as well... and... I think I may be able to help with what you are doing wrong.

I sketched out these two quick examples real fast to help illustrate:

The first one is a face staring straight ahead, the second is the same face tilted down at an extreme angle.
Note how the face actually gets MORE pointy, not less when tilted down. This actually surprised me as well when I first researched it, but it makes sense if I guess if you take a look at some references of real heads. Actually it might work to just go look at yourself in a mirror and tilt your head down. ;)

So... apparently you are achieving the OPPOSITE effect of what you intend by slightly rounding out the jaw/chin line. Who would have thought... :heh:
Also, with the Riful piece, there is an additional problem. And that is simply: The mouth is rather poorly rendered. Simple as that unfortunately. Not only is it's expression un-Riful-like, it just doesn't look much like a decent mouth. (Please note however, that is actually one of my favorite pieces that you've done :))

I think you've pretty much put your finger on it. If you are attempting to emulate a cartoon style, you really want to leave realistic details out of it as they will totally ruin the effect. I learned that the painful way, and am now leaning more towards the completely realistic style.
But more than that, it's just a matter of study and practice... Even if you don't like the way Yagi does things(I like a few of the points of his facial styles, but not much else, and I agree that alot of his proportions are atrocious) I still recommend intensely studying the way he does things just so you can get an idea of how the different pieces come together to make something that looks like it fits.
It's not a matter of replicating his style so much as gaining a better understanding of cartoon art in general...

So it would seem my issue is that I am mixing cartoon extrapolation and real anatomy together which is causing problems with my faces. The bodies seem to be all right though I draw them so small you can see a lot of my pen mistakes. I have been using real proportions for face layouts and then mixing in cartoon features from the characters etc. The jaw thing still looks right to me in the instances I used it but that is because I am drawing the chin in a cartoon aspect ratio. We'll see if I can fix it in the future. On Miria's I really only intended a very subtle tilt, and obviously it didn't work.

Haha, that mouth for Riful was actually changed from the original one due to another complaint. I drew that one with a mouse. I thought the original one looked much better, but no biggie. The really sad thing was on the Riful picture the original jaw line was pointy (exactly the way it would be on a real person), but everyone said that was wrong and that it looked better the way it is now... For some reason they accepted that jaw line more, though it may have destroyed the perception of the tilt along with it. Part of it was because I made the chin to square and then put a scowl on the mouth, etc... There didn't seem to be a right answer for that one.

Bah. I'm way too slow at the coloring. Still trying, though, trying to brush up on Photoshop skills; maybe done in another day or so.

Chiba, one thing that bugged me on the facial construction for Miria was the eyes. Looking at the originals, Miria has very rounded eyes, not the sharp/flat topped/angular type. From your recent message you were apparently going for a perspective shot, but the rest of the face looks like she's literally looking straight ahead/slightly to the side (body held low, head raised to target opponent). I hope you don't mind that I'm going to try to adjust that (though it'll probly still not look like I'd like).

And nice work by Neesan and Valduran.

You guys can do whatever you want with the image :p. I am kind of freaking out though, even if I am learning a valuable lesson from this. While I have been drawing these images from memory, with the exception of the new phantom suit designs, I was really curious just how far off I really was so I could improve. So I have been pulling images from the manga of characters in simmilar poses for me to check the angles. It is mind blowing to me how close I am getting from guess work. I thought I would have been much further off.

For instance take Miria's jaw that has been the subject of so much debate. I found an image of Miria, from when she new phantom's Agatha, at the exact angle I drew my image from; a slight angle from above (chapter 78 page 19). The jaw line match exactly, except for the very bottom. My pen work didn't have as pointy of a chin, but the line for the pointy chin Yagi drew touches the line of the chin I drew the whole way. My mouth placement is exactly over his, and the irises match even though I messed up on one of the irises making it smaller than the other. My nose placement is off and the lips are not opened nor as round as I had Miria frowning. Kinematics is right that I changed her eyes to look more scowling look.

So I am really freaking out now as to what I can do to make these faces I am drawing acceptable because the things I thought I could fix by looking at the images turn out to be right, and mistakes I made are usually things I have done intentionally to convey an emotion or an expression. So maybe I just have to draw characters with minimal to no expression then. I don't know. I know my pen work isn't the greatest when I am working so small. I am using a 005 Micron for most the lines, which is the smallest pen I can find and usually I can fit several of these images on an 8.5x11 piece of paper. So maybe no expression will do it as my expressions are being read as mistakes. I'm not sure. Line quality seems to be a big issue more than proportion or anything else so maybe I just have to draw twice as big and be careful while inking. Yes that is Miria's face from the manga on the image from an actual comic page and the proportions are all pretty much spot on, with the exception of the nose and that I made Miria's eyes more closed and scowling. My jaw was not as pointy, but the lines match up exactly even if my line work is no where near as beautiful. Most of her hair even matched.

My hapless attempt at coloring. Skimped at the end; didn't want to get into detailing the belts, left off the snaps for the straps, the sword hilt wasn't properly redone and a few other flaws.. Also, forgive the hair, it's the first time I've tried doing it this way and I obviously need a lot more practice at it.

Anyway, this is at half res so a few of the smaller details get a bit lost. Full res is 2048x1284.

Nice job on the coloring Kinematics! Even if you skimped on finishing the belts I like what you did with them being a different color than the rest of her suit. It really separates the parts and makes it look like the belts are holding her clothes on. Also giving her uniform that deep black color really gives her outfit some substance. You did her hair lighter than I would have, which is interesting because Claymores have no color in their hair but, probably because of the anime, I always think of Miria as being a brunette. Weird.

Her hair gave me fits the entire way through (which is part of why I decided it was time to take a break and just post it). Personally I've always thought of her as having just a hint of red, a sort of strawberry blond. However I could never get any sampled color to work when moving to my image. Turns out it was because I was working in a different color space (32 bit floating point per channel), and even colors with the same RGB values don't look the same when compared to a normal 8 bit per channel 24/32 bit image.

Anyway, after much frustration over that I just settled on a slightly dark blond. Amusing that you consider it too light :) And after another night's sleep the hair drawing technique is starting to gel a little bit better; it'll probably be another three iterations before it reaches a point I'll be happy with.



So, went back, redid the hair (like it better now), and added the suggested eyelashes, plus a few other minor tweaks. Replaced the image in my post above.

I decided that the Claymore Goddess(Known simply as Galatea to ignorant heretics :frustrated:) needed more tribute, so I made this. :D
I was experimenting with a variety of new techniques, but I think the end result wasn't too bad at all. I'll probably merge the things I learned from this with my current style.

Her left hand in general (only 3 fingers?) and left arm proportions need reworking.

Extend the color block for the sword to off-screen so that the drop shadow doesn't end before the edge of the image.

Feels like the right leg's shadow should affect the dress and left leg a bit more/differently. Also, maybe a bit of shadow at the crease of the left leg to give it a bit better depth.

Though the light source seems to be from the upper left, the left [frame] part of the dress has a much greater concentration of shadows, and the shadows on the right [frame] half of the dress seem a bit haphazard.

But thanks for confirming my suspicions anyway... This was mostly a training project, and I learned alot, so mission accomplished. :D
(I actually didn't notice the incomplete drop shadow and lack of shading at the crease in her left leg though... oops :uhoh:)

Although, concerning the left hand, I thought it would be assumed that with that kind of position her little finger would be curled towards her palm a little and not especially visible. And the perspective... well, that's what I get for following my reference image too closely. Yagi's perspectives are definitely a bit odd. >.>

And the odd haphazard shadows on the dress... This is the first time I've ever attempted realistic cloth, so that was my somewhat futile effort to simulate the ripples and creases. It looks interesting, but unfortunately not especially realistic. :(

The handling of flowing cloth has always been one of the things that amazed me when seeing stuff by good artists, and has never seemed easy. I wouldn't even know where to begin. So not faulting you, just pointing out a direction you could improve. Aside from the hand, it's the only part of the image that looked like it had the potential for significant (rather than minor) improvements.

On the hand, you can certainly hide the last finger in certain circumstances, but in this case it's really too messed up to be able to claim that excuse. :)
