In the episode 5 discussion I commented on Theresa being voiced by Paku Romi. That is definitely not the way I had ever imagined Theresa sounding. However, after watching this episode when I think of Theresa's voice, this performance is what I will think of from now on. She changed my impression of how Theresa should sound. Now that's good.

Lately Paku Romi has been impressing me. Usually she does basic tough girls like Maki (Air Master) and Temari (Naruto) or tough little boys like Edward Elric (FMA) and Natusme (Gakuen Alice). I thought I knew what to expect from her, but lately her voice has increased its range as I first heard with Alita/Falis (Murder Princess) and now this.

I must confess Romi played this role quite diffrent from what I had pictured /imagined I was expecting Teressa's voice to be a bit a on the mischevious side as she is sarcastic and drabble-dribbles in black humor . After recovering from the intial dissapointment of her flat voice , I must say Romi has portayed the role to perfection . The scene's where Terresa displays her human side has been done wonderfully and thats where Romi peaks displaying the right amount of required emotes .

From the body language and especially tone you get the feeling Terresa is indeed holding back her emotions and discovering new ones . The brief euphoria is controlled with subtle display of emotions

I think it's the same person who did Saber in Fate Stay Night but I may be mistaken :)

Up in post #2 Geta Boshi tells us that Clare's seiyu is Kuwashima Hōko and gives a rather nice bio for her. I'm afraid that she was definitely not Saber, though she was in Fate/stay night as Mordred. Saber was Ayako Kawasumi (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=525).

The voice acting in this show is one of the best ensemble performances for quite a while. With Kuwashima Houko, Paku Romi, and now Hisakawa Aya, it's become a collection of some of the very best in the business. I'd say that this just goes to show that the veterans can be quite deft at simply outperforming the newer seiyuu.

I especially find Hisakawa Aya's handling of Priscilla very interesting since I don't believe that she's voice a young girl character since her role as Natsume Maya in Tenjo Tenge.

Out of curiosity, Geta Boshi, why are you highlighting some of the titles in red?

I was amazed to find that Romi Paku was the one voicing Teresa! :D I hadn't really thought too much about how Teresa would sound when reading the manga, but she really and absolutely brings her character to life! :) It's quite extraordinary when you think her other roles include Temari from Naruto, Hitsugaya from Bleach as well as Nana Osaki - such a diverse range of characters! Oh, I also forgot to mention she's also Alita Forland, *the* murder princess in the new OAV, Murder Princess :D

I hadn't realised that Clare's voice (which really fits too imho) was also the voice of Kirika from Noir - admittedly I've only watched a few episodes of the latter but she was pretty mysterious :)

Heh, you're right about how the first two don't have a certain style to their voices, yet i imideatly recognized Aya there. There was that certain "Kurosawa-sensei" image floating around my brain when i heard Priscilla giving her "lecture" to Teresa^^
But yeah, that's certainly a high caliber of seiyuus for Claymore, i'm looking forward to future roles. Maybe we get the chance to hear some more legendary seiyuss. I just can't wait to find out.

Certain Seiyus do tend to follow a certain manner of speech . When a certain role becomes enormously popular they resort to following the same voice modulation as opposed to picking an appropriate voice for that role .

Miki Shin'ichirō is a good example, he has used the same voice for a lot of diffrent roles .

Helen's seiyuu choice will make or break ALOT of the story for me. Since she's one of the very few who will express distinct emotions throughout the show, I hope they pick someone fitting (but so far, I've been VERY impressed with the selection)

I picture Helen's voice to be cocky and aggressive, very straightforward and NOT childish/dollish. At the same time, not a dark-timbred ojousama. Rather a mature 25-year-old light clear voice with a hard edge.

Now let's see what we get ;)

It's such a pity that she only had a few lines before her character (Elena) got killed by Clare. :( Wonder if she'll voice another chara later in the show.

Ishida Akira, another big seiyuu is apparently also in this show according to wiki. Except he played Raki's older brother, so he didn't get much screen time either.

I actually recognized Hisakawa Aya and Toyoguchi Megumi's voices right away. I did notice that Toyoguchi's voice was harder to recognize than in other shows she played.

i totally didn't recognize Inoue Kikuko's voice as Milia tho. I wonder if she used the same voice as Zet's mom in Kiba. can't remember

It's kinda cool that Claymore is getting famous seiyuu even for small parts like this one. I doubt we'll see her voicing anyone else in this series though. She's too big to use her for another part.

For a late-night anime, this show has just about the most stellar voice cast in ages. And to think that the only reason I checked it out was because of Kuwashima Houko...

What's sort of nifty is that the veteran seiyuu are being cast in roles that they normally don't do. For example, I don't think that I've ever heard Shinohara Emi as starking bonkers or Hisakawa Aya as an outright villain before.

This Anime is has truly impressed me with the awesome voice acting that has been done to this date.

Irene/Illena (Minami Takayama) did an awesome job capturing the cool (too cool) Illena.
Galatea (Ai Orikasa) - Man you could just tell the glamor in her voice. Impressive!
Ophelia (Emi Shinohara) - The changes in Ophelia's mode were perfectly acted by the very talented Ms. Shinohara. Bravo!
Even the supporting roles (which are sometimes neglected) have been voice acted so well that I am hard pressed to name an Anime where the voice acting was that good.

The only "complaint" I have is that Clare (Houko Kuwashima) sounds like a complete retard (speaking in the monotone voice). I guess it fits her character perfectly. I would love for Clare to do a Cartman impression ("bitch, bring me some PIE!"). Anything to show some emotion. Since this is shonen Anime, lets hope Clare runs into situations that would panic her and her voice would not sound so calm. Having said that, I am not complaining about Clare's voice acting per se (since she is sound like that on purpose).

EDIT: PS. I can just imaging cartoon network airing a dub of this Anime. They have a track record of having such bad voice acting (and editing!) that it would be considered a sacrilege. As good as this Anime, watching that would qualify as torture.

Since she usually goes quiet (or simply grunts in frustration) when she perceives that she's about to get her backside giftwrapped, I don't think you'll get your wish.
If you want emotion, you might look at
the scene in which she almost awakens and her farewell to Raki, which contained plenty of it.

After watching the episode, I felt somehow that Jean's voice sounded a bit forced (the very first sentence she says). I also would have used Kotono Mitsuishi for a character where she could use her Misato voice (like Flora f.ex.) - imho that voice could fit Jean as well. Fukami and Tomizawa as Flora and Undine would be great or maybe one of them as Luciela. Tomizawa came out of retirement for Black Lagoon already, so they actually might be able to get her. I wouldn't mind seeing Masako Katsuki (Neptune, voices Tsunade in Naruto), Chiyoko Kawashima (Pluto, also retired though) or Megumi Ogata (Uranus) either :D

Hear hear! When I first heard about Romi Paku receiving the award, I just thought it was a pity that my favourite seiyuu voice (at the time) hadn't won it; but ehm... now I can't even remember her name! Romi Paku is definitely talented! :)

On another note, Clare's seiyuu is also doing the voice for a main character in Denno Coil (Isako) and she's awesome in that one too!

I don't think that it's any surprise that the seiyuu for Clare and Theresa are very talented - both Kuwashima Houko and Paku Romi are A-class actors. And they're far from being alone in Claymore: I'd say that Inoue Kikuko, Hisakawa Aya, Mitsuishi Kotono, Shinohara Emi and Orikasa Ai (Takayama Minami probably should go here as well) are among the very top seiyuu out there. This quality is what really sets Claymore apart from other shows in this arena.

As it happens, Claymore also has a lot of B-class seiyuu as well: I'd put Kawasumi Ayako, Mizuki Nana, Nagasawa Miki, Toyoguchi Megumi, Takeuchi Junko in that category. While this latter list is pretty good, it's not too ususual for show to have this kind of calibre of talent. And it totally pales compared to the experience found in the former list.


Claymore also happens to be one of the very few shows where all three of my favorite seiyuu are present as well. It's just too bad that there's no real way for all three of them to interact with one another in the same scene.

When I watched the anime, a lot of voices definitely popped out at me: Paku Romi (FTW!!!), Kuwashima Houko (her manly impression in episode 15 was fun), and... Orikasa Ai! Okay, so maybe I'm like the only Orikasa fan here ;_; I noticed how mature her voice became (oh let's say compared to... Quatre from Gundam Wing? *le gasp*)

I have to agree with 4Tran there. I think there are a lot of great voice actresses/actors in Claymore. Seriously, the entire quality of the anime is done so well, and I think they definitely chose the right VAs for each characters, they fit in so well.

As said I'm still not too happy with Kotono as Jean, the voice kind of lacks individuality and it's not like I'd think "wow, that's Kotono Mitsuishi and that's Jean!" (like I did think "THAT is Riful"), she could do better imho. BUT I still have hope for when she gets a chance to speak "normally".

Don't like Galatea's voice that much either, but that's really because of my ears :D The voice actress does a good job and it fits the character, but the tone is simply not to my taste. :heh:

Personally I think she's done/doing a very good job voicing Haruhi and Konata but she still has a long way to go before she's considered anywhere near the calibre of the seiyuus we have in Claymore so far.

It's likely we will see more veteran seiyuus being cast as the new characters. :cool:

I second that! The seiyu's voice and the character looks fit quite well!!She's one of my fav character designs in Claymore (beside Clare, Galatea, and Teresa). When I first heard the voice from the character, all I can say is, "Good job!!!!".:)

Seiyuu are a relatively small part of the cost of an anime production, but veteran ones like in Claymore are paid significantly more. This is one of the main reasons why we rarely see shows with lots of A-class seiyuu. I'm not sure what the industry rates are like, so take my info with a grain of salt.

Galatea is one of the best performances I've heard from Orikasa Ai for a long time - I think that the inflection she puts into the voice is especially fitting. Jean is a fairly inexpressive character, and I think that Mitsuishi Kotono did a great job bringing that character out.

Flora's voice mostly seems to rub people the wrong way because it's different from their preconceptions. As a non-manga reader, it seems to be quite in line with both her appearance and her personality, so I can't really relate. In fact, I thought that Matsuki Miyu has done a decent job so far.

It's hard to imagine that the voice for Miria is Kikuko Inoue, totally different from Belldandy and other roles I know her voice for.
Ah, you just have to hear Inoue Kikuko in more different types of roles. While she isn't as versatile as say, Kuwashima Houko, she's performed a larger variety of voices like Tiger in Saber Marionette J or Oldeena in Figure 17.

If I'm not mistaken Kōji Yusa does the voice of both Isley and Ichimaru Gin from bleach. I wouldn't have thought anything of it if I hadn't seen Bleach. When I first heard it I thought, "this voice seems strangely sarcastic and a little bit creepy." That would be why :) I think it was a good choice.

I would like it if George Nakata (the voice of Alucard and the count of monte cristo) showed up as the lion king. Mostly because I really just enjoy his voice :) I wonder who will do his voice?

I don't know if Luciela or Alicia will show up in the anime so I don't know if they will get voice actresses. Same with Clarice. Claymore has done a great job with voices.

Well, see this, I an Asian, from Malaysia. I preferred Asian women but I am not blind to the fact a live action Claymore is more suitable for real Caucasian females. And not because they have bigger bust. Hahahahaha.

Their name is already very Western origin, we don't see popular Japanese names such as Midori or Kasumi for Claymore operator names. And not many Claymore operators have Asian like features except for few like Irene/Ilena. Irene/Ilena reminded me of those East European look actually to be honest. Galatea reminded me of Swedish girl I seen before long time ago.

Just want to say that they did a tremendous job. The seiyuus and the producers of the anime. The seiyuus were superb. They must've worked really hard. The producers really did a good job at gathering the fabulous seiyuus. I mean, they are all big names, aren't they? And quite a number of my faves were taken in, Inoue Kikuko-sama being the top of it all (I'm also a big fan of Mitsuishi Kotono-sama, Shinohara Emi-san and Takayama Minami-san).

Romi Paku as Teresa was my favorite voice in the show. It would have been a very different experience if they had picked someone else. Teresa is what made me fall in love with the show and get into the manga.

I liked a lot the voice actors in Claymore, mostly Minami Takayama (Irene) and Emi Shinohara (Ophelia), they fit their characters really well, and Aya Isakawa (Priscilla) always put a lot of emotion to the dialogs. I really miss that kind of emotion in many dubbed animes :( The original is better ;)

There are very few VA's that can fully manipulate their vocal chords like Minami Takayama does. She's totally awesome.. being able to hit both high and low notes widens the variety of roles she can do by dozens.

Paku Romi and Kikuko Inoue also have that talent.

Check out Ishida Akira.. that's one mean voice manipulation talent :twitch: :D

That's awesome. it remembers me when Clare changed her voice while searching Raki :rolleyes: , and the Clare's seiyuu is a very good singer :p , but I still prefering Minami as VA and singer:cool:

For those of you who can't get enough of Kuwashima-san, a reminder that she's now voicing Soi Fon. It will last until Soi Fon's original seiyu is back from her break.

To bring something new, who do you think should voice the additional manga characters?

1) For Clarice, Saitou Chiwa seems to fit really well.
2) Miata: No idea. A crack choice would be Noto Mamiko XD.

My favourite seiyuu is houko kuwashima--she can sound so emotionless, but can sound very calm too. Did she do Clare's growls too? If so, she is truly talented. Her singing voice is good too, I like Kioku, shinkai no kodoku, kono sekai no doko kade, etc.
Next is Galatea's. She always manages to sound so sarcastic and cool.
Isley's voice is a typical bishounen's.
Riful--by Nana Mizuki. I love Nana, she can sound so creepy, so lolita! I also love her singing voice.
Irene--she sounded manly, but cool. I like her singing voice in shippu.
Ophelia--creepy enough. I like her singing voice in zouo.
miria--her voice fits the voice of a leader, and she can sing too, in gen ei.
flora--she sounded very sweet and polite.
Jean--her voice matched her looks.

Dislikes:
Teresa sounded too gruff and manly, not matching her beautiful face.
Priscilla sounded too childlike and disgusting, especially her begging Teresa to kill her.
Helen--her voice is just too shrill for my ears, sorry.
Undine--same as Helen.
Raki--his voice is annoying. period.

Overall, i think most of the actors' voices are cast correctly.
