Girl in promotional poster, Expected to be important

I am not totally sure, but the answer should be no. The girl that you see in the promo poster should be a character that still hasn't been introduced yet, according to what Imaishi and his staff said in their blog quite some time ago, that 7th mentioned in the general discussion thread:

Women play a very small role in the show. Yoko is the only major female character until late in the story, when a girl named Nia shows up. Imaish sez, "I hate to say it, but this show is full-on, balls-to-the-wall, guy-oriented drama... It's pretty tough to find an effective dramatic hook when you bias the storytelling in one direction like [this]..." but he's confident the story will turn out well.

if that pink hair girl in the pic is indeed Nia, she sure doesn't look like the girl in the poster at all... different hair style, age and may be hair color too

Off topic: Another thing I notice from the pic above, Yoko wears no panty. hoho

Considering the amount of screen time females have gotten in the first four episodes ... I just find that director's quote in the spoiler endlessly amusing. Sure the center of the show is the "coming of age / buddy" dynamic but that "ranged sniper" is definitely an important part of the team and repeatedly a story catalyst in what we've seen so far.

Actually, it's true that she hasn't been in the spotlight thus far. Fittingly for a sniper; in not only combat action, but I think that her contribution to plot, while major, has mostly been from the background (motivating Simon, unknowingly setting up the meeting with Viral, being last to join the team as they left, and in episode 5, literally bringing down the Ganmen); except in the first episode, when she was really at the forefront (soon eclipsed by Kamina, tho).

Vexx

That's why I used the term catalyst -- not much is required to send the other ingredients spinning in new directions or combinations :)

I've been wanting to ask this for a while now, but keeps slipping my mind.

We all know the Kobayashi/GL 4 fiasco, and that due to the negative response to the change, there wasn't going to be anymore experimenting and all episodes post-4 retained a similar sense of direction and style.

Whether or not people like GL4 and Kobayashi's style/direction is something for somewhere else, but I would like to know if we knew any other "styles" or guest animation directors/stuff they were planning to bring into GL before it was canned?... I dunno, like Yuasa?

That information was never revealed and I'm pretty sure the episodes aired up to this point were aired how they were originally supposed to be aired. Nevertheless, Yuasa wouldn't be as experimental as Kobayashi to be honest, at least he wouldn't use an slide-show animation in the eyes of the public.

http://www.gainax.co.jp/anime/gurren-lagann/chara.html

According to Gainax's website, every character except for Simon, Yoko, Viral and Old Coco now have surnames. Though, their surnames are just the names of the villages (or in Nia's case, the beastman's former capital). Though this isn't that bad, as we learned that the Black Brethren came from a village called "Bachika".

What's the difference between Nia and Hanrasen Nia?

They're pretty much the same person... to certain degree. Hanrasen Nia is Nia after her Anti-Spiral genetic code activated and closed-off her human feelings. Think of it as Darker than Black's contractors but with a purpose.

the main different is Dark Nia is about 10x hotter and billion times stronger. I hope she start beam spamming soon, may be its coming up in ep 22.

Who are the animation studios that worked on GL? Id est, for something like Eva we had a joint Gainax + I.G. collaboration and for something like Mahoromatic it was Gainax + Shaft with Gainax taking most of the slack in both.

The studios I know of who worked on GL:

1. Gainax
2. Studio Cat
3. GONZO
4. Production I.G.
5. Manglobe Inc.

I.G. does most of the visual effects in GL. Front-Line did the Animation Production for episodes 5 and 20. UFO-Table did Animation Co-Production on episode 13. Xebec was the AP for episode 3 with IG co-producing. GONZO did 18, Manglobe 19.

"I.G. does most of the visual effects in GL."

Are they? I remember spotting Production IG on the credit in every single episode of GL but they are credited as an "Offline editing studio". I think it's not the same thing in animation but i could be wrong.
Gainax has now is own photograph y departement for working on (digital) visual effects, you can see one at work on that bonus that is featured on the 1st DVD special edition (up on nicovideo).

Xebec is the only credited studio as "Animation Cooperation" on episode 3.

You can check all the staff for the first 16 episode of GL here :

Even when an episode is almost entirely sub-contracted to a studio, they still list it as "Animation coopration".
You can't really make any assumptions out of those credits.

Rather, it's better to look at animators and staff names of the episode, and see where they belong, to determine how much of its content was oursourced work.

manuloz
2007-08-21, 02:03
Yeah right. On some of them there's still some Gainax animtor stuck on the middle of the credit. But there was none on the xebec one and those after episode 17.

But then my favorite is the one by Dogakobo with Takashi Mukoda as AD *^_____^*

In the DS game it seems Kamina is alive. Well if that's the case maybe in the future SRW they'll have 2 routes for Kamina, death and alive. And there will be FAQs on keeping him alive.
And imho that maybe the alternate of the anime. Is there any news about an OVA about Kamina alive with the young Simon and Nia plus the babe Yoko? Or Sequels or spin offs?

Now is the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann the biggest robot in history now? Because it seems to me that it is bigger then Getter Emperor, which I heard could squash a planet. Gainax seems to love making robot big, Gunubster was 200m, Diebuster was a planet size, and Tengen Tppa Gurren Lagann is just freaking huge.

Malintex_Terek
2007-10-05, 23:34
Probably not. It's hard to measure given Tengen Toppa was in an artificial space, but remember, Chou Ginga was piloting it, so it couldn't have been bigger a the solar system. It was probably planet sized, probably Neptune, Saturn, or Uranus in height.

I'm not completely sure, but I think
it has to with something with Lord Genome, since the eye has its resemblance to his eyes, maybe he still is present somewhere within Simon? Sorry, this is a really blind theory.

Malintex_Terek
2007-10-07, 04:38
Spiral Eyes = next step of evolution, probably. That characteristic was probably what distinguished Spiral Warriors from normal humanoids, only those with a ton of spiral power could alter their own phenotypes.

While that says something about Simon and Lord Genome, it says a LOT about Kittan, who transformed BOTH eyes in an instant.

Oh and what does Garlock mean? I've heard it a bunch of times and I have no idea what it is.

Garlock

The nickname for the future Simon seen in the prologue. Many Anonymous shat bricks when they first saw him, since he stood on the bridge of a moon sized battleship and was facing a galatic strike force so enormus they outshone all the stars in the sky. Many of his lines, like "They'll be a good match for us", "Gurren-Lagann! SPIN ON!" and "Who the hell do you think I am" (later attributed to Kamina) became popular with Anonymous. Garlock's imposing presence, not to mention his resemblance to Captain Harlock (the whole scene was a homage to the opening of Endless Orbit SSX) created a lot of anticipation among Anonymous to see Simon's metamorphosis unfold. The results were mixed - "Garlock" didn't appear in the series (see: Starlock) and his appearence in the prologue has been deliberately kept vague by Gainax. Nearly all Anonymous were disappointed and pissed off, although given Gurren-Lagann's epic end, the shitstorms were lessened somewhat. With the promise of more Gurren-Lagann, Anonymous awaits the "promised day" when Gainax animates the character in full glory.source:http://lurkmore.com/wiki/index.php?title=Tengen_Toppa_Gurren-Lagann

There is no boxed set yet. The last DVD in Japan just came out last week, so if you find a boxed set anywhere right now, it would be a bootleg. You'd have no choice but to buy the singles for the moment.

I'm waiting for ADV to release the DVDs in the USA, whenever that may be, and just hope that they include all the extras that came with the Japanese versions (minus perhaps the drama CD that came with Limited Edition DVD 5, but I've already heard that, so). I'm gonna have to wait longer, but it'll much cheaper overall. Besides, I can't play Japanese DVDs on my DVD player. :p

It's awesome, that's what it is. And it's nothing at all like Gundam. The only thing it has in common is that they both have robots.

The fanservice isn't overly excessive either. It's mostly just Yoko...

Watch this show.

Shows like R+V were tailored to be loaded with ecchi fanservice. Shows like TTGL were tailored to be loaded with epic win. There is a big difference.

Hi there. Quick question:

What does "Lagann" mean?

I took "Gurren" to be equivalent to "guren", which means red or crimson, which makes a lot of sense, actually. Given that, I figure "Lagann" (or something close to it) also had to have some meaning.

Thanks.

Does anyone have a good explanation for why Boota didn't stay in human form after they escaped from the AU? As a side note it was a female form right?
Also just curiously, what does "Tengen Toppa" mean?

Also just curiously, what does "Tengen Toppa" mean?It was a sudden powerup, a hyper mode, something like how Gurren Lagann gets repaired in battle but remains damaged after battle. The Spiral grants you powers when you need it, it makes you invincible when you need it, its gives you the energu you need to do the impossible. When you don't need it, you don't invoke it. Its not a power that will help you ressurect the dead and make them stay alive. And yes, I'm saying the power may even be possible to ressurect Kamina and Nia, but they won't be around permanent.

Tengen Toppa, 天元突破: Literally means 'breaking through the heavens'. I'm sure you have guessed its something along these lines, ever since Kamina said that Simon is the drill that will pierce the heavens.

Actually, I have another possible answer for the meaning of "Lagann".

Recently Gainax revealed what I see to be the real meaning of the title with the movie titles, 紅蓮篇(guren hen) and 螺巌篇(ragan hen)

紅蓮 : means crimson lotus.
螺巌 : 螺(ra) means spiral/screw, 巌(gan) means mountain/large rock

Of course these are just movie titles, I think that the creators of Gurren Lagann intended it to have multiple meanings, puns if you will.
Example: 愚連(guren) means tough gang

Now is the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann the biggest robot in history now? Because it seems to me that it is bigger then Getter Emperor, which I heard could squash a planet. Gainax seems to love making robot big, Gunubster was 200m, Diebuster was a planet size, and Tengen Tppa Gurren Lagann is just freaking huge.

Doubt anytone cares at this point but Wikipedia lists Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann as being 10 million Light years tall.

Normally that would seem unbelievable but this is spiral energy we are talking about. Also they are already in a universe that has been created by the antispiral and they are fighting a god who can use Schrodinger warps and alter probablility. The whole 10 million light years is just used to explain how they are throwing GALAXIES as Shruiken. :heh:

Its Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Laws of physics do not apply. Spiral Energy does all the work. :heh:

C.A.

Since its talking about size and Getter Emperor is in the quote.

Firstly yes, TTGL is 10million light years tall, its straight from the fanbooks. The exact number is 10^25 metres tall, which is 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 metres tall.

Getter Emperor on the other hand never had a measured size, all but 1 frame in the manga. Which the humongous monstrosity is shown emerging from the middle of a galaxy up till waist height and its arm span is larger than that galaxy.

But theoretically, if it can be theoretical, both intergalatic giants are unlimted in size. TTGL or I should say Lagann is as large as you can gather Spiral Energy. Getter Emperor is as large as there is Getter Rays.

These guys would both share the largest manifestations of mass in the universe until GAINAX can bring us out of this universe.

The way I understood was that while Boota indeed was able to evolve into an intelligent being and came into his own recognition as a spiral being, but because of that he got trapped in an alternate universe where he transformed into a human form - which means it didn't actually happen.

I've two questions, both regarding names.

1. Why did Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann mysteriously become Gurren-Lagann seemingly overnight, a change reflected in nearly all media of communication? (If Gurren-Lagann was simply verbal shorthand for the actual title, it's certainly gotten way out of hand.)

2. Why did the character "Yoko Ritona" mysteriously become "Yoko Littner" seemingly overnight, a change reflected in nearly all media of communication? (Did her village vote to change its name to Littner, hence requiring her name to be changed as well?)

One sure-fire way for any work of art/literature to lose continuity as well as fans/followers/supporters is to suddenly -- and without sufficient explanation -- change its name and/or the name of a principal character. This just doesn't make any sense, not to me anyway; unless, of course, some media-of-communication gatekeepers were (shall we say) persuaded to help those who seek to harm the popularity of the OVA and/or Yoko.

For all 27 episodes of the OVA, Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann was Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann; and "Yoko Ritona" was "Yoko Ritona." I've yet to hear/read/see a convincing explanation of those above-mentioned violations of basic business and literary practices -- and of common sense.

Believable explanations of the motivation behind those changes would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Wow.

Um.

First of all, an OVA series is a series released direct to video/DVD. Gurren Lagann was a originally broadcast on television.

"Gurren Lagann" is the official name of the dub version, simply because it's easier for Westerners to remember and say. Besides, the title made little sense until episode 27 anyway.

"Littner" is the official dub name of Ritona Village, as well. Hence the changes everywhere.

...I'm just amazed how you could have come to the conclusions you did.

Flyvapnet

Well, that's good to know! I shall make an effective attempt to refrain from asking question here in future. We can't have people going about in a state of amazement, can we?

So, why were those names chosen for the "official dub version"? "Ritona" seems easy enough to say, for one thing. Perhaps if you'd read the questions ... but then it's much more fun to play bully and point out supposed flaws in posts than it is to display a modicum of courtesy.

'Bye, all! I gave it a try, but apparently this isn't the Web site where one can ask questions and receive civil answers.

:(

The dub uses the official spellings endorsed by Gainax. The spellings you are used to were created by fans and fansubbers.

SnowCrasher

"Ritona" is the Japanese romaji way of spelling the pronunciation of Littner.
If you show a Japanese the word "Littner" they will just read it out as ri-to-na.
Many foreign name spellings get mixed up because of that. :)

As Kaisos said, English speakers would have no idea what "Tengen Toppa" means, unless they translated the full title as "Heaven Shattering Gurren Lagann" which is still a mouthful.
It's the same thing as "Tenkuu no Escaflowne" being simply named "Escaflowne" along with many other anime.

Yes, very irksome, the Japanese phoneme shortage. Anyway, my question.

What's the passenger capacity of the SuperGalaxy Dai-Gurren? First if it's being kept as a warship, second if it's refitted for civilian purposes. (Though the Arc-Gurren was estimated to be able to carry over 200k for a year in self-sufficient mode, and it was still a decent fighting force -- at least, as Arc-Gurren-Lagann.) Not sure if it still counts as "fighting condition" if it requires a transformation to be able to fight on its own, though there's always its Space Gunmen. Eh, finagle the parameters however you want. :P Though I wonder if it can still act as a civilian home when in humanoid - no, not complicating it any further.

Okay why was Simon pronounced like the female name Simone?
Because my name is Simon in real life and it's not pronounced like it is Gurren Lagann. Like in the anime.

And it's spelt Simon on wikipedia.

Could someone please give me a thorough explanation why it's pronounced like that? Because i know it's not pronounced like that in english as a name.

I'm just wondering.

Kaisos Erranon
2009-08-06, 00:58
Because it's not the English name "Simon". It comes from the Japanese word "shimo", which means "below" or "underneath".

All the major characters in Gurren Lagann have names that relate to distance or placing. "Kamina" comes from "kami", which is "above", "Rossiu" comes from the word for "behind", "Nia" is a romanized "near", etc.

I certainly think so. I was watching the english dub all the way up to episode 21 before I heard any of the japanese voices. The actors were all top-notch in my opinion, all of which being well known. Steve Blum does Leeron in a wierd way by using a really strong gay lisp, which I think is hilarious at times, especially compared to his japanese counterpart. Disturbing, yes, but it adds a little something to the english version. The other voices pretty much do a good job of matching their characters and japanese voice actors, so all in all it's a damn good dub.

I was thinking about something that was confusing me... if this has been asked before, I apoloize...

In the last episode, Team Gurren all stood in front of the Anti-Spiral in giant drills. How exactly was Viral able to use one of these drills considering he isn't able to use spiral power?

C.A.

Viral's determination and willpower like the others, manifested into spiral energy. It doesn't matter than he didn't have Spiral Energy in the first place, he showed that he was able to have the same spirit as the Gurren-dan, the life force of Spiral Beings.

So together with the rest, who doesn't have the Spiral Energy like Simon, manifested their own drills with their determination and will power.
