My thoughts on the music so far:
ED - cool, fits the show very nicely.
OP - I've watched it once and always skip it after that. Doesn't fit at all, some below average pop music - GL needs something far crazier.
Besides that, action scenes had good music themes. My favorite one is for Viral. Anyone knows, what does it called?
Nothing else was memorable enough.

OP: Sorairo Days by Nakagawa Shoko [Unable to find a release date for the single]

ED: Underground by High Voltage [Which went on sale last week]

Out of the two i enjoy the OP a lot more. Its that style of music & Nakagawa's voice that goes perfectly with Gurren Lagann.

Yeah, i'm expecting an OST release to appear sometime soon, maybe even two. Loving the music so far.

I love the OP more than the ED since I'm a fan of jpop (And its her best song yet IMO). I believe its out within June.

Viral's & Gurren Lagann's theme is pretty catchy also.

OP: The opening is probably the only controversial thing about the show for me. It doesn't even fit the theme of the show, which is hot blooded Super Robot Action and instead sounds like a typical idol-pop song you'd hear in a harem show, but with actual effort put into the instrumentals. I blame it mostly on Shoko Nakagawa who's voice has that usual idol singers annoying, empty and almost whiny sounding style to it. The background instrumental however saves the song from her and helps it from being a total loss. Were it not for the instrumental being good this song would be a total bust I imagine, but it's not so bad that I have to skip it every time like a lot of Idol-Pop. Thank You Backup Band whoever you guys are because you at least as much credit as Shoko if not more.

ED: This is far more fitting and could have easily been the opening (or at least something similar sounding). It nails the whole hot blooded feel of the show with its guitar work and passionate singer. Plus the whole black and white outline of Simon walking is extremely stylish. It's a really fun song that I listen to from time to time on my playlist these days.

BGM: There's one BGM them I like exclusively that is often played in battles. It has a part that has seven notes and then it sounds like somebody beating one of those calypso drums. It really gets the blood boiling.

I already preordered the Limited Press Version of the OP Single (mainly because Yoko is on it...) since I didn't like the PV all that much, so I don't need the DVD.

I really love the Opening, I already liked it in the trailers. Sure, it may not be that fitting for such a "manly" Mecha-Action show, but it's got a catchy tune and sounds good :D
I also liked the Episode 11 insert song, and it will be on the CD as well, so I'm happy.

Anyone knows when an OST is coming out? I'd love to listen to it, but I don't think it has been announced yet, has it?

From what I can see that is not an OST, but a collection of radio 'shows'.

Edit: Darn I was slow... the price is exactly the same @ above. There's a single with (Kamina's seiyuu) and Marina Inoue (Yoko's seiyuu) songs coming out on July 25th though, if anyone cares. I loved all Marina Inoue songs so far, so, hurray for me.

Mixing opera up with other styles is Kajiura-sensei's specialty - if anyone can do it and make it work, she can. :D With that said, she would have not made a good choice for doing the OST for this one -way out of her norm - she's not a rocker.

My little review of the series OST, "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Best Sound"

I haven't been this excited about an album in a long time.
I haven't been this impressed with the mastering of a CD in a long time.
I haven't been this pleased with an album in a long time.

(Incidentally, the last time for all three of those was the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children OST, but that's not that relevant.)

I won't really spend any time going into detail about the music, because hey, we all know what great tracks we're looking for.

Yes, as I said, the mastering is wonderful. In a world where most albums are mastered with ridiculously high volume levels that sacrifice every ounce of dynamic range in the music, this is done RIGHT. You may notice that the base volume is a bit lower than most other CDs these days, but that's a good thing, because that means the highs are crisp and clear and the lows are full and clean in ways rarely heard any more.

I wasn't aware until today that the composer was Iwasaki Taku, who composed (as Westlo mentioned above) the Read or Die OST. His signature style is there, without a doubt. Actually, nothing seems to really resemble the Read or Die soundtrack much at all, but it's like his spirit is in the compositions. It must be so, because this past week I've been chiding myself for misremembering RoD music in place of GL music (making my discovery of his identity today quite amusing to me). Those who have both this soundtrack and the Read or Die soundtrack (entitled "Listen or Die"), try comparing the main Gurren Lagann thematic pieces (covered in track 21 of this album) with the main Read or Die thematic pieces (covered in track 9 on the RoD album--this is actually what I kept mentally inserting into GL in my head).

Unlike many anime OSTs full of minute and a half mood pieces, each track here has the length it needs to stand on its own and really shine. This isn't a CD full of tracks so we can merely hear the music we've heard on the show. No, this is an album made by an artist, who poured passion into a work made for listening. Although the various tracks and their layout make it clear that this is a soundtrack to another work, the album works very well as a cohesive whole. The tracks aren't quite arranged in the order they were first presented, but mostly so, leading us through memories of the series but striking a balance that makes listening to it straight through a very smooth experience.

Hearing the pieces on their own gives a wonderful reflection on the show, itself. Nia's theme, for instance, seems to be a loving description of her character. The theme played during the battles with the Mugan over Kamina city almost points out all the works those scenes were an homage to.

Giving each track room to spread its wings is mostly a good thing, but it does have its downfalls: This CD does have some lulls in it during extended mood pieces, and the incredibly powerful crescendos that made such an impact in the show in the songs' shorter forms are occasionally lost or diluted by the trip it takes to reach them in the full version of the tracks. The pieces are no less invigorating, overall, though, and are able to do some pleasing new things with the extra space they're given.

The only other criticism I have is related: The mix we see on the tracks in the album is occasionally slightly different than what we were treated to in the series. For example, the first piece of music we hear in Gurren Lagann opens the album, but while this piece ended as an instrumental in the show, on the album the vocal track begins before reaching that point. While this works very well on its own, it ultimately leaves a slightly different impression. I believe the original could have been preserved without sacrificing the newer content.

That's not too bad, though. The only reason I harp on it so much is because a small blemish stands out so much when its attached to such a great beauty. Even with its very minor faults, this is a truly incredible album.

As a bonus, of course, is the opening and ending themes and character songs. The OP and EDs need no description, of course, but the character songs are a great surprise: Unlike most character songs, these are very listenable. Kudos to whoever decided that the themes should be available with the OST.

I'm disappointed.

Too many tracks from the show were omitted, and rather bad themes were added in (#10 and #16 in particular, TOO MUCH ROH ROH). Leeron's theme isn't there, the preview theme is omitted as well, Garlock's instrumental of the Gurren Gang fanfare is missing as well (how interesting!). It's a jumbled mess, a mix of themes from the first two arcs and from the last two, no real pattern.

My main complaint is, too much RAP and not enough variety in the instrumentals. I've already heard many of these tracks to death in episode sixteen, which was almost unadulterated as far as the sound-track goes - the biggest feature of this are the techno songs from Arc's III and IV, which are great I must say.

Rather poor job on Gainax's part, considering how LONG it took to pump out this OST compared with, say, Sunrise, and how unsatisfying it is. I mean, GaoGaiGar's OST I and II had everything but ONE theme, which was ported onto FINAL because there wasn't enough room on one disk for it.

the only bad thing i thought that some tracks wouldve been more awsome without the "Roh Roh Fight the Powa!" >.>; its the first song that jerks a tear for me and im back into my "Noo Kamina!" depression once again :(

don't forget that Gundam Seed OST 4 came out one year after the show ended....so there is hope.

That's the problem.

There were a number of tracks omitted, but not enough to make a whole 'nother CD with. "Liberate Me" instrumental, "Roh Roh" Garlock remix instrumental, prievew, Garlock Gurren Gang, Leeron's harmonica theme, the OPs and EDs intrumental. That's only eight tracks, not including what I'm not thinking of in the series that was omitted.

This OST's organization was just poor, I like the techno stuff but I wouldn't have minded waiting for them on an OST II. This is Gainax's failure for being so slow with the release, now no one will care about OST II in the far future with the anime being over. >_>

You can't tell you dislike hiphop and like techno.

With a line like "the techno songs...are great I must say" I must really hate that kind of stuff, huh?

As for the next preview theme try track 21 buddy

Hmm! I guess that track was more complete than I thought.

I totally, 100%ly, agree. I was really hoping for at least one limited edition DVD with a bonus CD, but it doesn't look like it's gonna happen from the official site... I want that piece from when Adiene revealed Nia was abandoned... It was a real tear jerker for me during the episode...

I've known all along that this soundtrack wasn't going to include all of the material i've heard from this series --- its a given when it comes to soundtracks. Though i am very surprised that a few well known tracks haven't appeared, so that does make me believe that we'll see another soundtrack in the future.

I agree with Malintex_Terek that the direction of this soundtrack is a bit sloppy, though it doesn't bother me that much.

Yeah, its easily in my top 05 tracks. Very powerful tracks --- whenever listening, i think that back to that very memorial scene from episode 08.

Speaking of my top 05 tracks (in no order):

- track 01: ラップは漢の魂だ!無理を通して道理を蹴っ飛ばす!俺たち大グレン団のテーマを耳の穴かっぽじ ってよ~く聴
- track 02: モグラはモグラのままなのか?
- track 06: BafBau!そんなに燃えるのが…好きかい?
- track 20: お前のXXXで…
- track 21: お前のXXXで天を衝け!

"Libera me" from hell would have been on my list, though i don't feel right having two 'raw raw fight the power' tracks on there. I do wish we could have got a version without the lyrics.

WOW...thanks for the lyrics! They are really great! I did not think I could love this OST even more, but now after reading the lyrics I love it on a whole new level.

The lyrics of "Nikopol" really suit Viral's character.

Also, "Trust" is a really great song, conveying Yoko's emotions really well - how she feels about Kamina and misses him a lot, and at the same time how she will keep moving forward and never forget him. Truly fitting!

Anyways, here's my top 5 tracks:

1) Track 19 - "Libera Me" from Hell
2) Track 1 - "Rap is a Devil of a Man" - too long to list the whole title:)
3) Track 7 - "Nikopol"
4) Track 13 - "Eat Sh*t and Unite"
5) Track 21 - "Pierce the Heaven with your XXX"

Just something so 'satsifying' about hearing that song at the end of the CD and you feel like you've 'arrived'.

I'm not sure we needed quite so much "Raw raw! Fight da POWAH!" but Libera Me From Hell is just epic - It may sound a bit like my radio has gone on the blink and is picking up a classical music station and a rap station both at the same time, but I get a shiver every time I listen to it.

That is because such a track hasn't been commercially released, unless some impossibly godly audio software was able to filter out the rap vocals while keeping the opera and instrumental.

I was looking around a bit and "Libera me" from hell is NOT a Original. It's a remix from a classic song. But i couldn't find anything...

If you can't find anything, then it means you're wrong, and it is original. Try bringing proof next time you make random conjectures.

My fav's from the OST:

Track - Song (all are by Iwasaki Tarou, so there's no point in saying anything else)

01 - Rap wa Kan no Tamashii da! Muri wo Toushite Douri wo Kettobasu! Ore Tachi dai Gurren Dan
^ Just a fun song that mixes it up with both rap, operatics, and a few other trace elements.

07 - Nikopol
^ Viral's theme. This hard rock kicks some serious ass.

18 - Douda! Ore no Trumpet wa Sugoi Darou!!
^ It has a different, slightly dissonant style that's just very cool.

19 - 'Libera me' from hell
^ Obvious pick. I mean, duh.

20 - Omae no XXX de...
^ Very sad sounding song prelude to track 21, long associated with the Kamina x Yoko tragedy that brings a tear to my eye every time.

21 - Omae no XXX de Ten wo Tsuke!
^ Fantastic song, a triumphant tune that makes the final song on the OST my TTGL FAVORITE OF ALL TIME!!!

"The anime series Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann has a song named "'Libera Me' From Hell" which combines operatic verses from "Libera Me" with rock and rap style music."

Yeah it is indeed a remix:

I find that only the lyrics matches and you can say that the melody is completely revised (to match the 'raw raw fight the pawa' from the gurren theme). I dont think Iwasaki was trying to hide that the fact that it is a remix since he did a proper re-titling. Still a great song in my ears.

Shouko Nakagawa is going to sing the theme song for the movie.

Also, her new song "calling location" that can be found on her first album is a sequel to "happily ever after." (Confirmed here: http://dol.dengeki.com/data/news/2008/3/29/12631dc513034b05935d737feea421fc.html)

On that day there was no way I could understand the meaning
of a distance called forever
I just wished that
tomorrow wouldn't come
Because I didn't want to let go of that hand

For the first time in my life
To have to give up

Even that sadness that you taught me
is our irreplacable proof
Stacking up all our moments that I don't want to forget
I will head towards tomorrow

Not a single thing has changed
even now when everything has changed
There's so many things I want to talk about
In the middle of the glaring light, were your eyes able
to see the same scenery?

For the first time in my life
I cannot give up

Even that sadness that you taught me
is our irreplacable proof
Stacking up all our moments that I don't want to forget
I will head towards tomorrow

Someday, even after I have surpassed the you from that day
Please still be there always watching over me
Because you'll always be right here

That love that you taught me
is our irreplacable proof
That happiness that you taught me
is our irreplacable proof
Stacking up all our moments that I don't want to forget
I will head towards tomorrow
I will head towards your tomorrow

Ok Hard one first
Ep 21: when It's Showing like "1 year ago" and Yoka is a teacher. around the 6 min mark (5:55 to be exact). it starts showing like clips of her being a teacher with the kids. and is playing this music that almost sounds like "tribal island music" has alot flutes and such.... I really want to find this. cause I loved it

second ez one: the "next episode preview" music. what is that

Shiroth

Ano...does anyone know..the beats theme which is played almost throughout GL? Makes its first appearance in the first episode in the first few scenes, where they show adult Simon shout "gurren lagann...." and the music plays in the background. What is the name of that music piece and if it is available in the OSTs.........

I'm having trouble finding the name of a certain track. It's the one played during the prologue before almost every episode. Does anyone know the title? The Japanese wording is fine if you don't have an english translation.

Samanosuke

I believe It (the specific version you are looking for ) was never released.
But there's still variant such as the very short version used in episode 1 "仕方ねえ!1分20秒だけ媚びてやる" , and it's long rap version "ラップは漢の魂だ! 無理を通して道理を蹴っ飛ばす!俺たち大グレン団のテーマを耳の穴かっぽじってよ~く聴きやが れ!!"

Hi, I've just got a question.

I was listening to the two disc (not the Complete Best, the other one) OST and noticed a key piece of music was missing.

The music that plays directly after Kamina gets fatally stabbed in ep 8. It also plays later on when Nia is learning from Guame that her father only created her to be a plaything.

I've speed-listened to the entire soundtrack and cannot find it. This is really baffling to me, as it's a memorable, important piece of music, yet apparently isn't on either of the soundtracks. (It's not on Complete Best either.)

Anyone have any further info on this?

Really strange, being as it's used in several key scenes in the series. Watching a few eps last night, it's also used in episode 18 when the head of Lordgenome is explaining to Rossiu about the war between the Spiral and Anti-Spiral races and why he sealed everyone underground.

Any other music missing?

Is TTGL's OST so awesome that Disney have to steal it?

Someone verify this for me, in the movie Race to Witch Mountain at 01:06:44 isn't that "Pierce the Heavens With Your XXX" playing? (Refer to Parallel Works 4 if you need a reminder)

From Wikipedia:

Music

The score to Race to Witch Mountain was composed by Trevor Rabin, who recorded his score with a 78-piece ensemble of the Hollywood Studio Symphony and a 24-person choir at the Sony Scoring Stage.[20] Two of the songs in the film were written and performed by country and western band Brokedown Cadillac, which appears briefly in an opening scene.

The movie also features the hit single "Fly On The Wall" by Miley Cyrus and "Emergency" by Hollywood Records artist Steve Rushton, featured on the soundtrack.

I couldn't see any credit to TTGL's composer in its credits and it seems a bit blatant to be a homage.

"Libera Me" from Hell. Gotta be the best dramatic opera rap I've ever heard.

The only time I actually liked the opening was when it was played in the last episode as an insert theme song. Other than that, I really had no preference for it.

Hehe, second fav OST of all time. Just like the show, full of more epic than you can possibly comprehend.

Best songs would have to be "Libera me from Hell" and Viral's theme "Nikopol". Libera mainly for the chorus and opera breaks, the rap is good too but its a little odd in parts from Japanese singing in English.
