View Full Version : [Novel] Death Note: Another Novel
The following is taken from Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Note)
A novel adaption of the series has been written by Ishin Nishio, called Death Note: Another Note. It serves as a prequel to the manga series, with Mello narrating the story of L's first encounter with Naomi Misora during the Los Angeles "BB Serial Murder Case" mentioned in volume 2 of the manga. Beside Naomi's character, the novel focuses on how L works. Insight was given into Watari's orphanage and how the whole system of geniuses such as L, Mello and Near were put to work.
There is only one rule to follow to post in this thread. Do not mention any group that might be scanlating/translating the novel.
This is one hell of an idea --- and could turn out to be very interesting. Of course i'd give any chance to hear more about L, and this is it.
Shall be looking out for this one.

I read the book and it's pretty good. The book is actually narrated by Mello! I liked it up until the big twist at the end which was frankly ridiculous.

I heard this on wiki awhile back...a novel about how L got in contact with Aiber and Wedy would be pretty cool as well.
Anyway to read this BB Case novel online?

I have a small translated piece of this novel..is it allowed to post it here?
Real Interesting, I have always been curious about L's previous investigations. I wonder what kind of contact L makes with the antagonist of this novel.

I have a preview ( i think it's a preview) from the novel.
Spoilers for chapter 58/episode 25 tho,so be warned.
I wasn't the one that translated this btw.
Beyond Birthday’s third homicide was an experiment. He’d attempted to remove the person’s internal organs without damaging them, but they had died of internal hemorrhaging anyway, as he’d expected, and that was the end of that. He’d taken great lengths to prevent his victim from moving, too, using both physical restraints and a medicine that made them unconscious. Once suitably immobile, he had meticulously torn off the skin of their left arm. Leaving the tool he’d just used in the wound, he had then hit it repeatedly, intending to kill them, but it had ultimately led to nothing more than heavy internal bleeding. He was disappointed to watch his experiment end in failure. Even after the arm swelled with enough blood to turn it an angry purplish-red, the victim did not die. They had had a series of strange convulsions, which he might have found perfect under other conditions, but which, this time, caught him off-guard. As the arm filled with blood, the victim’s life began to fade. He’d expected this from previous trials, but this time he found the experience to be...sweeter, somehow. Naturally, Beyond Birthday considered the importance of such a murder to be relatively low, but the experiment itself, whether a failure or a success, was extremely entertaining. Afterwards, Beyond Birthday carefully removed the knife from his victim’s shoulder and—well. Well, well, well
Such speeches will stop, such stories will cease to be told, such meticulous notes will no longer be taken; not one sentence contains even a single iota of reason, up to the very last line. I am sick of this wild goose chase; to throw the matter down and finish it is the best I can do. Beyond Birthday’s wild farces are reminiscent of Holden Caulfield, and if they are so alike, then following and cross-examining his erratic thought patterns is not my intention (I, in my position within the government, remember pushing myself beyond my own abilities in an attempt to keep track his delusions). I have kept meticulous notes on this chain of serial murders he’s committed, but reciting them in this way should by no means raise their value. This report is not a novel. I do not like the fact that it has temporarily taken on such a form. There is no excuse for putting this case into such stereotypical, common words, but perhaps by bringing the matter to the public’s attention, I will be able to create a fresh start.
The result of the confrontation between L, this era’s great detective, and this Kira, a homicidal maniac he’d been hunting, is that the common people are forced to read these notes. Kira had prepared the metaphorical guillotine in order to spread his fantastic ideas across the globe, but it was a mere madman’s ideology; he set himself up as the god of his own little game, but he was a only fool who wasted his time chasing after his own childish beliefs. He ruled through terrorism and nothing more—or perhaps his desire was to be the god of a corrupt society, one filled with false accusations and betrayal. Such is probably the difference between gods of death and gods themselves, this negative intent, although it is something I don’t plan to think about often.
How in the world can Kira be good?
L will always be the most important thing in my life.
L.
L was too talented to die like that. His death was unreasonable; it came too damn fast! He solved over 3,500 difficult cases, and there are three times the amount of people packing the prisons today than there would be without him. He was a private investigator, and even though he never showed his face, his influence alone was great enough to inspire the world’s organizations to move forward together—I think that only someone who can match such an immaculate reputation should be able to inherit such a title. I also think I know who that person should be. Something happened, and I am unable to succeed him. Instead I shall leave behind this report in full, and let his real successor take the title.
This legend of L, then, is my final will and testament. It is a dying message aimed at the world at large, and which does not belong to me. Near, arrogant brat that he is, will probably find these notes before anyone else has a chance to; I only hope he doesn’t burn them upon discovery, or destroy them some other way. Actually, destroying them might be best; he didn’t know L like I did, and I don’t want to shatter whatever idealized image he might have created of him. There’s a possibility that this may fall into that demon Kira's hands instead, but I don’t mind. This is for you, you homicidal maniac: you let that abominable death god carry you on its back from beginning to end, and you used nothing but some nonsensical notebook to kill in an attempt to keep your hands clean of your own victims’ blood. You do not deserve to kiss L's feet, and are nothing more than dirt so unclean he wouldn’t even bother dirtying a tatami mat by laying it over you.
I am one of only a handful of people who has met L in person. He told me three of his achievement stories during our times together, but I have no intention of sharing those memories with you. Instead I’ll tell you the middle story, the one that relates to me; the story of Beyond Birthday. I refuse to beat around the bush here; if I do not relate the tale of the Los Angeles Beyond Birthday serial murder cases in full, how can anyone glean any information from them? I was brought up in Wammy’s House and stayed there until I was fifteen years old; L wasn’t. It had a profound influence on my ability to adapt to situations as needed. It doesn’t matter if there were ten or more casualties in this case or if it took over a million dollars to solve; L, in addition to three or four other people, gave his life in the pursuit of justice, and his sacrifice was honorable. More details concerning L are brought forward later—though perhaps they concern me as well, and perhaps Kira too; regardless, what happened in that watershed and what happened during the Los Angeles BB serial murder cases is monumental.
Because...
Because that is the first time L identifies himself as Ryuuzaki.
I have no interest in the specifics of how Beyond Birthday committed his crimes. Such gruesome details, then, will be omitted. Instead I will go back and tell the complete story of his first and second murders, since they are what drew L's interest early on, and enticed him to embark on what would become the greatest case of his time. I’m only a third party in this; neither Near, arrogant as he is, nor Kira, crazy as he is, will be able to tell I wrote this unless I leave my signature as the narrator, the navigator, and the storyteller at the end of these opening remarks—although conversely, for anyone but those two people, such anonymity might actually be a good thing. I am, then, the one who died in vain, the best dresser of this pointless death, Mihael Keehl. I call myself Mello now, and am generally identified as such, but that’s already an old story.
My memories are vivid, but they’re filled with nightmares.
if this is nog allowed, you can delete this.

Ah, I read a summary for this novel on a Livejournal which revealed the whole story basically.
I was really intrigued to hear BB had shinigami eyes, to those of you who read the novel, did they ever go discuss that any further than just noting its existence? Well, it's no matter, I guess, since
there's so tragically little chance of a second Death Note series (despite Ohba's hint about the other note in an interview that was obviously intended just to keep up the fandom).

It is possible for another series. It's always possible for another shinigami to drop another notebook. And Near and Misa are still alive and could be involved. Along with the investigation team. I just think that this would probably not happen, due to the fact that I hear that Near is very unpopular with the japanese. This may be incorrect, but oh well.
One thing they should include in the novel is more about Matt and his backstory. They didn't personify him a lot.

Errm... just wondering: why is there no chance? I don't think that was ever officially announced anywhere, and the writer clearly has the ability to keep making up more stories in the DN universe.
Ohba wrote the second movie which I hear is vastly different from the manga or anime, and the L movie which is new stuff all together.
You may be correct about Ohba's hint, but who's to say for sure?
Obata is working on something else right now (I think it's Blue Dragon or some garbage...), but Ohba's mind may be working some more magic (And if it isn't for Death Note hopefully it's for something equally as good.). I really hope Death Note isn't the last thing that we see from Ohba... that would be a real shame.
I believe that the kind of story that Death Note is--a suspenseful thriller about someone who has a notebook that kills people secretly and those who want the notebook or want to stop the killings amid moral ambiguity--only lends itself to a sequel of the same type, but the fresh elements of that story have already been used so I doubt a writer would be inclined to go there again. It's not that I hope this is the last we see of the series, and I do sincerely believe that a good sequel could be made. I'm not just not optimistic.
So, sorry, that's just my personal opinion. I could indeed be wrong, like how Michael Crichton chose to write The Lost World. The reason I posted was to find out if anyone knew about that other aspect of the novel, so from now one everyone can feel free to respond to that instead of the unnecessary and superfluous extra comment I made about the possibility of a sequel.

this book was pretty good but i must admit I was a little bit disapointed with the climax. It was such an unexpected and, at first, confusing conclusion. Based on the description when Misora first met B.B. I could have sworn that was L. He had the same clothes, hair, habits(love for sweets), methods, mannaerisms, and personality. Also was the way he talked and and sat. Was he an exact copy of L or something?

Personally, I think that everyone from Wammy's House happen to end of with severe personality quirks like Mello's love of chocolate and Near's love of toys. And... some people have said that sweets stimulate the brain or something... plus, that position that BB uses is surprisingly good for thinking. And if you think about, Beyond Birthday was a back-up of L to begin with, so the two being alike in many ways is not unnatural. Beyond was a copy of L, a back-up in case something happened to the real L to fill L's shoes as if he were the real L, if anything happened to the real L. Overall, it kind of makes sense to me in some strange way.
I liked the book. It has a nice pace and is a light read with a satisfying plot.

Yes, it's been released in the US. I was surprised on one of my weekly excursions to the B&N, what did I find but more Death Note stuff. I haven't been keeping up with the series too much (read the manga, at least) and I was hesitant to buy it straight off because some of the light novels out there are just horrible, in my opinion. *cough* LOVE HINA *cough* (The manga and anime of that are good, but back on topic...)
So I picked it up and read through a few pages. It's written well and the story pulled me in, so I bought it on the spot. =]

Yes but its not like BB was born as clone of L. He was individual like N and Mello who were also raised to be L's successor. Its just insane how similar they were. Throught the whole book I believed that was the real L, and im sure you did too. What did you think about his suicidal end?

I thought that BB's end was a satisfying one. Because they were so alike, you could call BB the ultimate L clone and in the end, the only one who could surpass L. In addition, it is pointed out that BB had put on the make-up and such to make him appear the way he does. It's safe to say that perhaps, the original L replacements had met L in the past and thus, BB knew what kind of person he was and therefore, to make the biggest impression, BB became Ryuzaki. BB knew L that well and had a level of dedication equal to L. Both L and BB are the type of people who would lay their lives at stake, if it would yield results.
As for english, the Novel is already out in English.

If you're a fan of L, then this novel will be disappointing b/c it focuses on Misora.

Okay, so my friend got the book for her Birthday this year, and she said that it was the best gift she ever recieved. She read the whole book, and saids that it is really good, and reccomends me on reading it. So I was like "Okay sure". So today I finally asked if I can borrow the book (because she told me a brief summary on what the Manga was about and I got really interested about the novel), and she said "Yeah =]".
So I just read the mini Prolouge in the beginning, and parts of Chapter 1, and I was "WOW!!!! Though I never watched the anime and read the manga, this story is awsome". I won't spoil it until I get to read half of the book. I read the back and it cost SO much money ($18 is a little pricy compared to how much I had in the summer). But if I read the whole book and still like it, I think I'm gonna get it with one of my Borders rewards gift coupons in the future!

Sorry to quote an older post, but to clarify, I believe that original storyline writer of Death Note, Tsugumi Ohba, stated that while he help in the writing of the novel much, that Nisio Isin did such a good job in writing it, he'd consider it canon and that it definitely fits into the Death Note story.
Oh, and yeah, it was released after the manga, which is surprising. XD

Okay... Just because I think you guys are in need of answers..
1) Beyond(Bb) has shinigami eyes, because his parents had shinigami body parts. That's all I know of, as of late. .~.;; Sorry.
2) Misa...IS DEAD. K? Dead. She died on Valentine's day, one year after Light dies. Yeah. I know. Tragic.
3) No one likes Near. I mean, I like him, but really, I've asked everyone I know, and out of, like...20 people, including myself, only 3 like him. .-.;; So tragic.
4) However you may think, there IS the possibility of another Death Note series; because Death Note is NOT about Yagami Light, as much as you may think it be so. It's about a HUMAN, obtaining a DEATH NOTE. Hence, the name, DEATH NOTE. So yes, there is a possibility.
5) Obata is working on something called RasGald, or something.. I can't remember. I'll post it up when I find it.
6) Blue Dragon is by someone else entirely. .-.;;
7) The successors of L were raised to be the greatest detective in the world. Bb mistook this, believing that he should BECOME Lawliet(L). That's why he's like that. He wanted to BE Lawliet, NOT a copy.
8) In Death Note 13: How to Read, Ohba states that they all have something that they absolutely love. It's a genius thing. Oh, it's also rumored that there are things that they are deadly afraid of, like Lawliet being deathly afraid of salt, and Mello being deathly afraid of broccoli.
9) Beyond isn't JUST "Backup", he's successor #2. Actually, the successors of L are alphabetically ordered, starting from A and ending at Z. The first successor, Autumn Ayers(Aa), committed suicide after Lawliet revealed to him of the successor stuff.
.~.;; I'm not exactly sure that I've answered your questions... Tell me if there are more, K? I'll TRY to answer them.. >___>
It's a good thing that I belong to LifeNoteClub on dA; the owner is DN CRAZY. XD

^ LOL, thats what my friend does since she owns the book. She reads it like all the freaking time now. Today I am letting my other friend read it, but she hardly read any of them (which makes me worried) because i might want to read it again soon :(.
And recently, I made a brief book review on it. It is for class though (and I'm curious if I did good ><)
This was a really interesting turn of events if you ever watched an/or read the Death Note series. The novel "Death Note Another novel: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases" written by a fan name Nisoisin is something you should read even though you never heard of the series. If you like mysteries, then you'll definitely love this book.
The story "Death Note Another Novel: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases" is one of those book that lets you think really hard on the characters and makes you ask lots of questions in your head. The story was told in Third-person by one of the characters name Mello who's in fact, this whole story was written in a notebook written by him. This talks about how the character Naomi Misora (who worked for the FBI) was helping out L, the century's greatest detective on a mysterious case in Los Angeles. She had to figure out some hints and clues through the story on how did the murderer kill his victims and when did this person kill them.
This story has a whole lot of analogies and speculation between characters, which made the story more difficult (if your reading level is like in the 5th or 6th grade level) and fun to read. For me, I pretty much understood the whole story though in a couple parts about the Wara Ningyo confused me. As I continued to read, the confusing parts made sense and everything else (in the plot) blended well together. I really recommend this book no matter how difficult it is because this book keeps your brain thinking, and you get to learn some things about the Japanese culture a little bit.
So yeah. Tats the review I posted up on librarything.com.
EDIT:
OMG, I have a grammar error in the review xD.
I am currently reading the Death Note: Another Note novel at the moment. I had to wait for it to be back in stock on Play.com before I could recieve it though.
'tis amazing. I now know a lot more things regarding Death Note, L, and L's whole background after reading some of this book, things that I did not know before..although his could be due to the fact that I have not finished watching nor reading the Death Note series all the way through. It was also interesting to learn more about Naomi Misora too. I also adore the twisted plot in which it posesses.
I will read the final chapter tonight.

Glad you like the book =D. I also agree that it was pretty interesting to learn more about Naomi. She was one of my favorite characters in the book (not the whole series altogether of course). I just wish that this whole book could've been in the beginning of the series. It would've made the anime and manga in total better. It titillated my mind a lot lol.

Indeed. I think that all Death Note fans should read this book atleast once to get more of an in-depth description of what it revolves around.. Alas, just as Mello wrote in the notes, it gives the reader a great view of L's amazing deductive skills and unique way of thinking and how it is that he recieved the title of the world's greatest detective. If one reads this then they can clearly see how great he, and also Misora, were back a few years prior the manga/anime...of course that is not to say that L was not amazing during the manga and anime too.
I suppose it was good to make it a seperate project to the manga though. It just gives it that nice feeling of extra story. I was quite hoping that they would make more novels based on the other cases written in the back of the book, on the conclusion page. That would be good, I would definitely buy them.

I just finished the book and I enjoyed it very much. I didn't know what to expect since it didn't involve a Death Note and I don't usually read mystery novels, but I thought it was well thought out and written well, too. As I read it I kept wanting to know what would happen next.

I own bb murder case, it wasn't really good. :(
My friend has the novel and is currently reading it.
I might borrow it from him when he's finished with it.

This novel was excellent.
It did such an amazing job of transferring Anime style imagery into written prose.
There are a few laugh out loud parts around certain descriptions of characters mannerisms and personalities which are as close as I've seen anyone get to recreating the visual equivalent of the animes.
The plot twist is EPIC and will evade even the most accomplished until very near the end. It's got an excellent pace. Very un put downable.
I bought it from manchester airport and finished it before I landed in amsterdam.
If you like Death Note and can read this is balls out essential.

Anyway , I only intended to post here to enquire if another one is coming out.
The interweb rumour mill seems to be dry. =(

well i loved it and all but i dont think that there will be another one :(
the story line was to well plot out and takes a long time to organized thoughts like that but it is likely as well as the death note thought. there are many ideas like that but none are confurmed (sp?) just yet or at all ^_^
just wanted to say my thoughts ^_^
Sorry to necro-post, but...I've got a question.
Is that true? Do you have the source for that?
