Scarred!Mello for great justice and win. The 2chan thread makes it look as if this episode is gonna rock.

Great episode.
They keep cutting out stuff from the manga which makes this episode and the last couple looked like its being rushed, but in the end its still good.

woww i thought it would be boring after L
but the whole story is still epic , especially this ep
Something was missing, but good episode all round. Getting close to the parts I want to see animated, not too long to wait. Liked how Mello looked in this episode with that scar, makes him appear even more evil. The feeling of looking forward to next episodes has died for me, even if I did read the manga.

I like the "first half" of Death Note better, but this was a pretty good episode.

Was light being sarcastic to Near at the end, When Near was in a pinch?. That was like obviosuly saying i am Kira. I think , he acted too carelessly, by thinking that Near will not survive this.
Also Near playing with the toys in the beginign was hillarious :heh: . Same as Ryuku lieing.
Also a question about Mello's picture. Did Mello gave Near the picture?. I feel there was something in Manga about this that wasnt covered in the anime. Just a feeling of course :).

The ending's dialog/action was a pretty drastic change from the manga. Cool in it's own right, but very very different.
I'm hoping the anime has a different ending overall. :)
wow its finnaly getting tense again. towards the end why was light using his "real" voice to contact near?

yea obviously Light thinks that near isnt going to escape but when he does hes going to be one angry super genius O.o Light is so dam evil...what he is doing now is literally "blackmailing" the public into becoming loyal...even the president didnt give any resistance :/
not as good as last ep but still entertaining ^__^

Overall, I found it to be a very good episode worthy of the '9' I gave it. While I'm somewhat upset they changed it a bit from the manga, i'm also kinda happy; gives it a solitary feel :)
I'm rather glad that they took out the president dying. I'd hate to see the flames it would recieve for it :heh:

WHAT??? The president dies??? When does that happen???
Anyways, this episode is pretty epic, almost first half epic, and certainly one of the best episodes of the second arc, which is why it is deserving of a 9/10. The new world certainly gives dystopic creeps (++), the philosophies, though repeated, are still put into good action (+), and Light's plan to get Near just blew my mind (++++++++++++++++++++).

Epic episode. Who would've thought the anime would still be this good after the way everyone talked about part 2 of the manga?
Next episode looks intriguing...
Light looked like he had shinigami eyes in the very last part of the preview. It's hard to say for sure due to how the anime team like showing Light's eyes as red when he's in Kira mode.
Wow, and people say the second half sucks?

Looks like from here on out...Mello's role will only decrease and Near's role will increase greatly...I hope the anime shows more Mello than the manga did, mainly of the new scarred Mello.
That whole Mello meeting Near scene was definitely one of DN's better moments...and the music in the background was great too.
I hope they make a dual ending for this show, so that all fans(kira/mello&near) will be happy
Epic episode. I'm looking forward to episode 31 a lot.
This get's a 10 out of me. Near is so smart :p
So, about the name misspelling rule... Why didn't Light die when he wrote down the guy's name in like 10 different ways in Episode 1?

could someone elaborate more on what was changed form the manga?
generally im really glad that death note has picked up so much momentum again, im liking this new mella/near dynamic a lot more then the disapointing snorefest that was the first arc after light lost his memories.
its very fun to see that the world is starting to side with kira now and that everyone is starting to finally distrust light.

love this serie so much, cant wait what's gonna happen with near in the next episode
After all the talk from manga readers about Death Note going downhill after L's death, I am really surprised at just how awesome the series still is.
This episode absolutely rocked, it's as gripping as the the ones in the beginning were.
So, about the name misspelling rule... Why didn't Light die when he wrote down the guy's name in like 10 different ways in Episode 1?
he didnt do it intentionally, and from the looks of it he got the name right after all, since ya know..he died
Haha Light has gone nuts! Does he really think he can kill N like this? He could just wear a mask or something. And Light flourishes straight on N's face before he even has the name written down.
Ryuk is weird, why does he lie about the rules? He says he isn't on anyone's side but it seems he's a little on Light's side.

yeah thats really weird. I think for a lie he got enough apples ^^
Ryuk does/says whatever he thinks will make/keep the situation interesting.

I agree. Ryuk is 100% netural except when it comes to apples :heh:
Seems like Death Gods in general have an addiction in the human world:
Ryuk, apples
Sidoh, chocolate
Rem, love ???

Sorry but i'm going to put this in a spoiler tag if anyone decides to go back and read the manga for themselves.
This is for things that happaned in past episodes that was changed from the Manga.
Well..Deathnote doesn't really change anything rather they take out things from the story but still somehow makes it connect.
For one, Light talks to the Prez before as well. He convinced the President to allow him use of middle eastern operatives to raid Mello's hide out.
While they were raiding the first time, this is around the time Shidou first came and talked to Mello's team. Mello ordered Shidou to take off the Helmets of the raid team so he can kill them. Shidou did, and Light and the NPA saw it on Camera.
That's when Light deducted that another Shingami came down to the world. So he was scared that Shidou was going to do the eye deal with somebody on Mello's team. Thats why he gave up pocession of his own Deathnote to make sure Mello's team doesn't randomly see a picture of him or something so they won't figure out he has the Deathnote.
That's just one example of how they changed the Manga from the Anime Series.. there is alot more.

Base on the rule, If you misspell it 4 times Intentionally you will die. So that means if you know the spelling and just intentionally misspell it you will die. In episode 1 Light wasnt doing it intentionally. I hope that helps :).

oh sorry, i actually just meant this episode, as people are complaining about how it changed. the change you jsut described was great though, leaving it out works perfectly.
the only thing that was a little disapointing though, was the fact that the new shinigami was only there for one episode, i kind of liked him...

What was supposed to happen was (in spoilers cause I fear for my life):
Kira has the President give him the names and location of the remaining members of the SPK under the threat that he'll have the president launch nukes and then kill himself (which we know can't happen as you can't have the Death Note'd person kill other people). After this next incedent (with the riot) Kira would have the President shoot himself and the Vice-President (the weak one from the episode) would give the bow-down speech he made in this episode.
in the end, they've worked it perfectly w/o presidential suicide :)

i think i like it better this way. i was thinking about it during the episode, that it wouldnt be very wise for kira to kill off their president. after all, hes jsut gaining a lot of followers and it wouldnt be too wise to shake them up with such a questionable act. the more i hear about them the more i like these changes

Actually, it is beneficial for Kira in that it shows the public that not even the President is above Kira's justice. If anything, the people will become more devout :(

Well, the President died from suicide in the manga so the public can't be sure that it's Kira. Public doesn't know Kira can kill with non-heart attacks.

MANGA SPOILERS
EDIT by Mod: Spoiler removed
P.S I'm so glad they made Light say "That's it! NEAR has to die..." That was said (in the manga) in their first conversation when Near belittled the 2nd L and it didn't feel good to have that left out.

Errr lotta, people missed what was different between this episode and the manga actually =o In the manga it was about chapter 75-79. Vol 9
The whole thing about the president getting killed was almost completely removed from the anime, in episode 27 the President is the same guy who's in this episode, so they did away with that entire part of Kira and the original President working together and the president commiting suicide. Also Kira never asked the the president to force the FBI/CIA and such to hunt down the SPK, he just wanted to know if members of such organizations had gone missing so he could find them and use them to get to Near.
They took out the part where Hal and Mello were talking to each other for an extended period, showing that Hal knows Mello and is somewhat of a double agent who just wants to see Kira caught.
The conversation about the fake rule was accurate, but Near's original intent and he made it even clearer in the manga with his attitude was that he wanted to create mistrust amoung the Japanese Police force, he hung up immediately after they said "We can't let you test the notebook Near"
The MAJOR change which pretty much confirms for Near that L is Kira, is that after they discuss with Near about the fake rule, Mello calls the Japanese Police and asks to speak with Mogi. He invites Mogi to New York, and leads him down to the SPK's little hideout, and the SPK starts asking Mogi a bunch of questions, which leads Light into sending Demegawa there to drag all of them out and killing them with Misa's eyes. In Near's opinion, since the only ones who knew of their location were the current SPK and the Japanese Police Force, L must be Kira. In this anime however, the Japanese Police Force doesn't know, L just had the CIA/FBI and whatever find the hideout and now he's sending Demegawa in like that. I wonder how they're gonna spin it. >_>
I have doubt in this episode. How does N knoes the rules of the death note? I don't remember anyone tell him the rules...

It was Light, after they decided to share their informations... they left it out in the anime

I just read that part of the manga, and it looks like they skipped the entire character of the President. The man who speaks as the President in this ep. is actually the Vice President who took over after the first killed himself. I've been reading the manga just after each show, and I'm kind of pleased with the cuts in this ep, though they cut too much material out of ep. 29 for it to hang together properly.
As an aside, is it just me, or do these authors seem to have the US completely wrong? The US has never been a pacifist nation, and for the US to surrender to Kira because 1) the Mafia has been eliminated and 2) there is no more war...??? I don't think I've ever seen anything so ironic in my life, since we're basically fighting 2 wars right now that we initiated, and the Mafia is so far in the background of day-to-day existence that no one really pays attention to it. Wasn't the anime written in 2003-4? Could this be the authors' own wishful thinking about the US?
Never mind :heh:
akoftroy
2007-05-12, 15:13
No, the authors didn't have the US wrong. They went out of their way to paint the Vice-President as a wuss to explain why he bowed down to Kira so easily. And then there is outrage by the members of the press when he announces it. Plus, what the hell is the president supposed to do? Kira is so powerful that there's nothing that can be done to fight him in the public arena. Saying you're going to go after Kira is a death wish.

I think the USA or other countries would have oppsite Kira, if the result is bad, but the result of Kira's actions was positive. Although they may not agree with the methods.
Also, U can see that L is better than Near and mello. Near couldnt get the infor if Mello didnt have actions, and I dont think Near can use tennis to test Light or any phyiscal actions to investigate things, while mello can not calm down. L had them both, phyiscally and mentally.
Basically until now i still don't understand the tennis match. In fact, during the tennis fact, both of them established that the tennis match was not meant for anything. You cant profile someone during a tennis match. Trying too hard to win would seem like kira's action, but trying too little would have the adverse effect of showing that you are kira. It seemed more like L was trying to make light think too hard so he would screw up. Basically i thought the cafe scene after that was the really clever part.
Light is turning more evil, but not on a simple basis of morals, but because the common people are swearing their support to Kira in exchange for a peaceful society devoid of crime and murder.
The problem is that the tip of the scale is turning towards the other side. What do I mean with that?
The common people, who gets frustrated by others, are venting their anger upon anyone who tries their patience and whatever act it is considered evil, whatever small maybe, is used as an excuse to instill fear of Kira upon them.
The argument that Matsuda brought up is very tense.
Light acknowledges that his judgement is evil but at the long-run is yielding results for the better. Countries where people can relax and go outdoors at any hour without fearing of being killed, robbed, or bullied on the streets.
And even the President confirmed that countries are not willing to make wars against each other for whatever political, economical, or social unrest among them.
The problem that weighs down, which is bluntly argued by Aizawa, is that Kira is creating fear upon people's hearts in order to force to act honest, kind, and virtuous.
Human nature cannot work that way. Light is only sealing people's negative nature under the rug through fear of being killed.
The side-effects are steadily starting to show in Japan. If people cannot vent their anger and frustrations by themselves upon others, then they'll simply accuse their neighbors that did wrong to them and threaten the with posting their names on the media for Kira to give them judgement.
In that way common people instill fear of Kira upon their neighbors to subject them.
It is the same system that has not changed. People continue to abuse people, but this time they are using Kira as the mean for whatever little excuse so that they won't have even to bother dirtying their hands to do the deed.
I enjoyed this episode a lot first for the above heated, argument which made reflect about the scope for Death Note, and second because Near pressured the hell of a time on Light and incurred his wrath.
The cliffhanger is high-tension and climatic, encouraging me to watch what's going to happen next week.
This is a sort of feeling when gets from those 60's campy, superheroes TV show when the hero gets stucked up in a deadly trap, and the episode ends with a message to stay tuned-up for next week to witness if the hero escapes death or dies.
I do like Near's theme, but L's theme is the best.
Episode 22 was very odd with L doing strange things with all the assortments of food he was being served. And for this one Near is proudly following on his predeccesors' steps, playing with all those action figures and train toys amidst a crisis.
However, I feel that Near's obsession with toys rings the same note as L's obession for food was. With respect to Mello's obsession with chocolate to me just feels if it was a tick or psychological spasm not a true fascination for choco.
The thing I am pointing out is that Near already deduced that Light has to be Kira in some way or another, because the fake rule was just placed on a perfect timing at the time of his lock-up and deduced that the Shinigami was made to lie about it.
It was very funny watching Near pulling out or more like inheriting L's spooky face when he nailed right that Light had been speaking with a Shinigami.
And hearing Ryuk answered Light's question on military tone.

One thing
Near can't hear Ryuk, he's never touched a Notebook. :)
Does Near even know about light's imprisonment? Either way, from the tone light used to talk to near at the end of the episode, he pretty much showed he was kira.

Great episode looks like the battlelines have been drawn on all sides. Although light thinks he is untouchable at this point imp he is at an disadvantage. Due to the serious rivalry between Near and Mellow it makes them want to try that much harderr. Over all Light has shown that the arm of Kira indeed reaches world wide.
There was only one thing I could not bring my self to believe. That was the fact that American president conceeded to Kira. To me that would be highly unlikley but then again many people would do whatever it would take to stay alive. Others would sacrifice them self for honor. I would rather die than to do thing Kira's way. Peace through mass killings and fear is not true peace in my opinion.
On another note seeing Lights mother break down into tears was heartbreaking to watch. First he daughter gets kidnapped then he husband dies in the line of duty and im sure light could give a rats ass about her.

That makes more sense. It sounds like hte writting in the manga is a little tighter than the anime. Thanks for the info.
I thought the first 1/2 of the episode dragged, but once Mello got to Nears place ist was good.
Well, this episode was infinitely better than the last one. It felt like the awesomeness that was the first half of the series had returned :)
That said, i think Light seriously dug a hole for himself at the end of the ep with that phone call - looks like his ego got the better of him, and i bet it is going to cost him later down the road. The crazy director/whatever at the end of the ep managed to crack me up :)
I hope they can keep this up - the finale has the promise of being intense.

I think Near would call Light anyway, and Light have to answer it or it will be too suspicious.
He only wrote out the molester's name about 3 times. So the person would die. By the way ep. 31 is already out.
