Finally! Anyway this isn't the most anticipated of all epis. Nothing on 4chan, no info leaks, no nothing. This is the deadest I've seen Nanoha plunge since I got here. Anybody got screens? Something?

first half ~
nanoha takes tea for a walk...and tries to open her up ~ she says sorry to subaru but her reaction is as carefree as ever...
oh my god yuuno turns up again :twitch: hes walking off with fate chan while talking about the past...ahh its the nostalgic jewel seeds again...
nanoha turns up and fate chan leaves the 2 love birds along...nanoha blushes and they talk about the auction ~
meanwhile acous and hayate is having their own bonding time (okey fate chan is left out on all the fun :sad:)
everyone is dismissed and tea walks off on her own ~ she refuses company from the others to be alone...
meanwhile vita has a meeting with nanoha and Co about tea...
another bath scene! but this is where tea's past is revealed...seems like tea had a bigger brother who was an elite back in those days...but as usual to what happens to all guys in the series...hes dead...(more heavy dialog but its pretty much guessable from there)
tea practices alone til dusk...she is worn out but tries hard...finally Vice(thats the name of the helicoper guy right?) shows up and tells her not to push it soo hard...she ignores him and continues to push harder (i smell potential!)
much later tea returns to her room where subaru is waiting...she falls asleep straight away...

The interest in this episode has been akin to watching grass grow. Certainly seems expectations are pretty low, though that should mean anything they do should be amazing :). I just hope the preview gives something to really get excited about.
Though judging from what Deathkillz has put up people might just have something to talk about after all.
I don't understand why so many people seems to freak out at the mere sight of a character development episode. If it weren't for those Nanoha would be reduced to the level of a DBZ with girls. For me these are the kinds of episodes that make a show worth it, and for me this is the episode that I am anticipating the most, except for the first episode, so there

oh don't worry since this is a 26 epsiode season, there going to build him slowly over time, he be up for over 30 seconds in the next epsiode for sure and may be in for a whole minute by ep10, since we all know that in the end he actually might be the real hero, that saves the day!!!!!

Any Yuuno is better than nothing. Plus Yuuno spending time with Nanoha should be enough to get something going. Well I wouldn't say Yuuno is going to go and save the day, probably saving that for whenever Chrono returns to the action.

After looking at both parts on nicovideo, I'm wondering what Nanoha was saying in the second part. Also, I'm wondering what why Nanoha was acting that way. It seems like she was a little harsh on them, but I don't know why.

I tried that Nicovideo but... I feel too lazy to try and register on a japanese website. Too much just wondering if I'm doing things correctly.
That and I probably should stop watching RAWs. I need meh subtitles, I only understand about 1 in every like 1000 words they say. xD
And to me, any Yuuno is bad. D: He was good as a ferret. At least then he was funny 'cause he got to peep on Nanoha as she changed and was all funny and cute-like. Now he's just... I dunno. Something. I say Chrono should get Yuuno's screentime. << >>

Subaru and Teana train like mad for a few days, then they spar with Nanoha. They acted waaay too reckless and Nanoha gets really angry. She's so damn scary this ep...Teana goes beserk. Nanoha binds Subaru, and nearly kills Teana, to "cool her off". Subaru cries and is very, very angry.

second part ~
its morning and subaru wakes tea up to go training together...tea wasnt expecting subaru to join her being so early in the morning but subaru insists *sigh* :) "its because they are partners"
later that day nanoha rounds up the troops...and it seems that tea and subaru has already sorted out their differences...HAHAHA! soo much for emo tea :heh:
AWWW ^__^ touching bonding moments inc next as we see how tea and subaru trains side by side ~
back at the room we see tea talking to cross mirage...subaru then comes in with some drinks...tea asks subaru if it okey to be like this? subaru reassures her and says that its going to be alright in the test tomorrow because nanoha is kind...*choking begins*
the test starts and its nanoha vs subaru and tea combo...fate chan catches up to observe with vita and her team...
holy hell tea uses cross fire again with amazing control ~ nanoha is forced to dodge while incomes subaru (this time its not a fake) ~ nanoha manages to deflect her punch and tells her to stop being soo reckless...but subaru is only a decoy as tea is then seen to be charging up her weapon...
subaru and tea moves on with their coordinated attacks ~ nanoha jacks up her shield while taking the impact of the punch...tea then appears from another place to stab nanoha into the back...nanoha goes beserk an releases raising heart's powers...nanoha asks why they are doing this and tea looses it...nanoha then fires at the defenseless tea...while at the same time putting subaru in bonds...

YES!!! YES!!!!!! FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!! We get to see Nanoha mad again! That means she's entering 'Friendly Mode' MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Okay being serious now: It was exactly as expected (not the Subaru part, but most of it). In any case I hope Nanoha will give her rookies a nice, long screaming session.

Man this episode sounds a lot more interesting then the preview was letting on. Knew they wouldn't do that to us. This really sounds like one to see. Especially after seeing the image thread, Nanoha in friendship mode!!

Correction. Death's summary was only half-way through the 2nd part of StrikerS 8.
We also saw Nanoha personally training Teana shooting, Caro riding the dragon looking from the sky, and various training shots, mainly Teana-centric and how CM's getting a little worn out.

I think everyone was caught off guard this time. They did a great job making everyone expect a Teana being depressed episode and not much else. Get a Yuuno revelation, and an angry Nanoha.

Wow this epsiode has turned into the biggest surprise since Erio and Caro's first *encounter*. The White Devil appears and knocks Teana around. Plus the preview is going to explain probably the #1 thing people have been wanting to know.

well, it looks like the little kids (tiena and subru) under estimated the power of nanoha, i feel good seeing sabru shaken to her core, they needed to lern that you do not mess around with nanoha, she not that cute white devil for nothing, personally i think she should have owned thewm a little eailer, but there no monday morning quarterback meeting in the nanohaverse, you either know excactly what your doing, or you get completely owned, that what happens in life, but you have to be prepare for all possiblites!!!! so if subrua and tiena get owned it their fault for messing around!!!!!

The gunblade probably would have been a lot cooler if it wasn't overshadowed by Nanoha destroying....I mean making friends with Teana.
With this episode and the preview they've got everyone locked in and wanting more. Clearly they are doing it so everyone can't do anything but think about the show and get completely absorbed in it. Keeping everyone's expectations down then hitting them with this...they've got the fans right where they want them.

Sure they are both rookies but still... Blocking both attacks in one hand? Especially one whose a close range specialist?
She probably has a lot of close combat skill if she spars with Fate or Signum a lot.

err she actually did use RH.Just before Teana strike her, Nanoha did "mode release" of RH.
It is possible for her just to cast spell without actually pointing RH in the direction.She did it 10 years ago :) should be piece of cake now.

Let's not forget that the Takamachi family are mainly swordsmen to begin with (and if Nanohaverse follows Torahaverse in this area, pretty good ones too). I wouldn't be surprised if her dad and/or elder siblings decide to beef her up in close combat, especially since they know she'll be in a very dangerous line of work.
That said, I'm still waiting for the higher quality version to appear in nicovideo (and surpressing all temptation to read the spoilers). So my comment might not really count :p .

I know Nanoha is extremely powerful, her identity hasn't escaped me. Just never saw Nanoha and catching weapons barehanded in the same sentence. Dodging, blasting a planet away sure. But when you think of it nothing should surprise me when it comes to Nanoha. If you take her lightly your not going to be living too long.

There MUST be a reason for Nanoha's actions other than some severe form of disciplinary action. I think they'll link Nanoha's actions here to the revelation about Nanoha's bloody past next episode. Don't think so. She's rated a top Combat Instructor, so I'm guessing this doesn't happen everyday. And yes, we know those two don't run the TSAB, but this event will probably not go that far. i guess nanoha just didnt think that they would take things soo far...i mean to her this is just a test not a competition...and that killing intent that was oozing out of tea certainly didnt help one bit ~ from what i got nanoha wanted to let her off but tea continued to point the barrel at her...this is mutiny in her books and the punishment was well rewarded ~ next ep is probably going to link a similar case with vita disobeying orders...

Which is why I think something about Subaru and Teana's actions triggered something inside Nanoha... perhaps a reminder of something she DIDN'T want to remember, and she simply... snapped. She was quite friendly even with Subaru's mistakes in episode one, and even with Teana's screw-up last mission (as far as I can tell from the summaries). So Nanoha doing THIS is quite unusual...
Which is why the wait for episode 9 is gonna be VEEERY long.
And Chaos is gonna find LOTS of things to tear apart in this ep, except THIS.

Which is why I think something about Subaru and Teana's actions triggered something inside Nanoha... perhaps a reminder of something she DIDN'T want to remember, and she simply... snapped. She was quite friendly even with Subaru's mistakes in episode one, and even with Teana's screw-up last mission (as far as I can tell from the summaries). So Nanoha doing THIS is quite unusual...
Which is why the wait for episode 9 is gonna be VEEERY long.
And Chaos is gonna find LOTS of things to tear apart in this ep, except THIS.

Thanks, and I agree. Obviously Nanoha is gonna get most of the ranting her superiors will give, because she's an adult, she's an Instructor, she's supposed to react properly not recklessly let her feelings take over and all that cr** they're gonna say.

Well if Nanoha released the limiter on Raising Heart she went as far as she could go. Though Hayate does hold the limiter on Nanoha personally so she wasn't able to go all out right?
Makes you worried about what happened to Nanoha that she would snap like this and really let Teana have it. of course it wouldn't have happened if Teana hadn't kept going for it, but there wasn't a way she would know how badly Nanoha would go at her. But it's true that Teana was the first person to go too far. Nanoha had a responsibility as an instructor, but she also had a responsibility to keep herself from being seriously harmed. Teana lost and should have given it up. I'm not giving Nanoha a clean slate saying that she did nothing wrong.
Mistakes were made and its really too bad things had to end like that. Next episode will be really important in finding out what happened to Nanoha that would make her strike out like that.

Nanoha released the limiter on RH, not the one on her body (only Hayate can release that limiter).
From a practical standpoint - if it is Nanoha's mental issues that caused this, then perhaps she is not suited for instructors job. She is the one that is supposed to set the example, and it is her job - her emotions shouldn't interfere.
Nanoha has all the right to be pissed at Teana, but whether her actions were legal is another question. (Though this applies to both of them). She is not in the position where she is allowed to lash out and injure her trainees when she wants to. And she went much further than simple self-defense. She must have broken a few military protocols there.

no...1 shot was for trying to stab and the 2nd shot was attempting to shoot...perfectly legal reasons i think :heh:
well i know that i wont want my lower causeing mutiny on me during a life or death situation...and nanoha is just making that impression clear to the two idiots...like i said any doubts on nanoha's morale status would be solved after seeing her past...this is one of those times where the grey area is blow away leaving just black and white...which ever way i look at it nanoha is in the white ~ if she had killed tea then that would be another story...but just minor flesh injuries? that would be sorted with a week's rest :3
and being an instructor doesnt mean anything in these types of situation where punishment has to be enforced...tea has just herself to blame for not being knocked out by the first blow :heh:

You're not listening. Teana went too far, and Nanoha has the right to act on self-defence. But then, why the second shot? Teana was already out, and there was no need for another shot, yet... This is what was improper for her. She lost it, and that's the one thing she can't do (self-defence, yes; punishment, yes; but this... definitely not).

Basically the combination strategy/move that they do is considered to be reckless by Nanoha .Teana kinda snapped at what Nanoha said and getting ready to shot at her again , but Nanoha blew her off 2x while binding Subaru.

You bound Teana at that point in time, she's just going to continue to spit and curse and scream. She would be degrading herself.
If Teana was in a normal calm state, she would have wanted to be knocked out.

But okay, I can't say that Nanoha was all calm and clear herself (base on the statement of others). But at that point in time, base on her Judgement in the heat of a life threatening moment, she decided that it would be the best course of action.

But okay, I can't say that Nanoha was all calm and clear herself (base on the statement of others). But at that point in time, base on her Judgement in the heat of a life threatening moment, she decided that it would be the best course of action.
Just don't bring it up.
It's that simple, as long as she doesn't show visable signs of rage like screaming at the top of her lungs and facial expression, she could claim that she was calm and in control and had made her decision carefully.
This summarizes everything pretty well. It's true that you NOW say the statements you posted, but if you were in Nanoha's shoes, you would've done the same thing and even reacted worse, I believe.

Yeah after seeing the episode I can understand what was going on better. Though Nanoha did look...distant(?) during the later part she did have her reasoning.
Subaru once binded was done, it probably wasn't necessary but no need to take chances. Teana was flipping out, clearly she was dangerous and had to be put down. Since she was still conscious Nanoha hit her again. Did notice her cushioning the impact and it's not like Teana was dropped from the sky to the concrete just to another layer of wing road.
The whole situation was pretty bad. Vita and Fate didn't jump in, so they must've felt Nanoha was justified in her actions.
Understanding would be fairly nice (though since episode 7 English subs aren't out yet, it'll be a while for episode 8)

I haven't been reading this thread at all. After just watching the ep, I can't say I'm surprised it's up to 9 pages already.
Wow... I bet nobody expected the ep to end like this.
Anyway, we learn a bit more about Teana's background in this ep.
Her parents died when she was little and she was basically raised by her brother. However, he died while on a mission when she was 10. As far as I could make out, the culprit (and maybe others) mocked the Teana's brother's use of magic guns. So Teana wants to prove that they can be effective in battle, kinda of thing. That's why she goes overboard from time to time.
I think her problem is she is too focused on "getting stronger" for that sake of it. ie, not paying enough attention as to why.

btw, Acoss said he knew about Riot 6 being at the hotel and asked Yuuno to come. It seems Acoss has recently been visiting the Infinite Library a bit and has gotten to known Yuuno.

I think Teana has her reason for getting stronger but it is more like bad motivation/reasoning.Mostly because the way she is referring to her brother everytime she thought about it, everything she did is not really for herself.So Teana end up getting pressured easily by her surrounding... (just my opinion)

As an intro, earlier in the ep when Nanoha asked Teana to walk with her, she said she knew that Vita had already scolded Teana and she could see Teana was reflecting on it. She said she wasn't going to do anything more except ask Teana to promise not to make a similar mistake in future. Teana did promise.
Around this time is a comment from Vita I think that Nanoha is working increadibly hard, in terms of analysing everyone's skills, etc to help them with their trainting. Nanoha's putting all her heart into helping the rookies.
Later in the ep, Teana and Subaru are practicing by themselves for the upcoming mock-battle (2 on 1 against Nanoha). Teana is a bit worried about the battle idea since it's against the rules/their instructions, but Subaru thinks it'll be okay since Nanoha is kind and would understand.
Anyway, Subaru charges towards Nanoha and pins her down. Subaru calls for Teana to attack, and Caro and Erio realise the Teana on the building was a mirage. btw, looks like Nanoha detected (or suspected) Teana approaching before the mirage was released.

Petiness? Even when she was young we never knew Nanoha to be petty.
There MUST be a reason for Nanoha's actions other than some severe form of disciplinary action. I think they'll link Nanoha's actions here to the revelation about Nanoha's bloody past next episode. Maybe what happened there affected Nanoha so badly, and now she just what she did because of reminders of that incident.
Maybe Subaru acting as distraction while Teana attacks from behind is very similar to Nanoha and Vita's bloody mission years ago. Maybe because of Nanoha's mistake/carelessness (which she herself said while in Vita's arm) both of them were totally open to counterattack; and maybe Nanoha defended Vita as well so she took the full blow which would explain her bloody mass while Vita seems unscathed. This again would perhaps explain why Vita is so keen on training herself so she can always protect Nanoha on the battlefield.

btw, I presume Nanoha hit Teana with a pure magic attack (no physical damage). ie would only cause Teana mental pain, not injury.
Anyway, I hope this'll help people understand a bit why Nanoha was so sad at the end.

i think the damage that is done to Tea isnt that great, it seems more like she is just knocked out, no more then that

Other than mocking Teana's bro style, is it mentioned whether the culprit itself still loose or not? I didn't get some part of what Nanoha said on that conversation.
I think Teana has her reason for getting stronger but it is more like bad motivation/reasoning.Mostly because the way she is referring to her brother everytime she thought about it, everything she did is not really for herself.So Teana end up getting pressured easily by her surrounding... (just my opinion)

No doubt having that bit of translation helped a ton. It's a lot easier when you have some understanding of what's going on. Instead of going by fragmented understanding of the japanese language and the images. This really gave some understanding of what was going on and why Nanoha was doing what she did.
Those two failed the first exam because they were too reckless, and this time they went against the rules of the test. If they are going to make it like a real fight then they should be prepared. Seems like Teana wasn't going to listen to reason and had to be put down, Subaru may not approve but it seems like it wasn't just Nanoha snapping and going crazy on them.
Seeing Yuuno and Nanoha interacting was fun. They seemed to have fun talking again so it was nice. That Acous is one sly guy that's for certain.
Next episode should be great as well from the information we'll get on Nanoha's injury. Wonder with Nanoha getting that hurt if we'll see a return of the extremely pissed Vita, that we got in the first episode of A's.

its morning and subaru wakes tea up to go training together...tea wasnt expecting subaru to join her being so early in the morning but subaru insists *sigh* :) "its because they are partners"
later that day nanoha rounds up the troops...and it seems that tea and subaru has already sorted out their differences...HAHAHA! soo much for emo tea :heh:
AWWW ^__^ touching bonding moments inc next as we see how tea and subaru trains side by side ~
back at the room we see tea talking to cross mirage...subaru then comes in with some drinks...tea asks subaru if it okey to be like this? subaru reassures her and says that its going to be alright in the test tomorrow because nanoha is kind...*choking begins*
the test starts and its nanoha vs subaru and tea combo...fate chan catches up to observe with vita and her team...
holy hell tea uses cross fire again with amazing control ~ nanoha is forced to dodge while incomes subaru (this time its not a fake) ~ nanoha manages to deflect her punch and tells her to stop being soo reckless...but subaru is only a decoy as tea is then seen to be charging up her weapon...

I noticed that our beautiful, and many times composed, Nanoha just went berserk on Teana. She didn't just fire at Tea once, she did it twice! Nanoha even bled by catching Tea's gunblade/gundagger in one hand, all the while holding off Subaru in her left hand. o_o
And, I definitely noticed Nanoha releasing Raging Heart just before Tea came in for the attack with her gunblade. O.o
Also, did anyone noticed that when Nanoha said, "Raging Heart, Mode Release," the background went pure black? Does Nanoha have a Dark Side??i mean what are teana and subaru thinking, don''t they know that in the nanohaverse there are only 2 options in this world, you either option 1 become nanoha friend whether where it's your choice or hers (nanoha), or option 2 where nanoha with RH totally kills you right on the spot, i think i am choosing option 1, since it saves your life, what option would you choose!!!!I'd soooooooo go for Option 1.But wow, Nanoha using magic without Raising Heart... And with that much power? PLUS she has those limiters? Imagine what would've happened had she been using Raising Heart.If Nanoha is powerful enough to hold off Tea and Subaru, WITHOUT Raging Heart active and with Limiters on, how much more powerful is she without the Limiters and Raging Heart? And, she didn't stop at the first shot, she went ahead and fired a second volley-- AFTER Tea is left defenseless and stunned from the first! Is this the same Nanoha I love so much? Something inside Nanoha must've snapped. It was either Tea's and Subaru's reckless fight against her or something else entirely.This isn't fair I say! @_@
The series is starting to pick up and I have to wait a week to see what's going to happen! @____@I know, it's so unfair! >_<;;;And, next week in Ep.9, we FINALLY get to see what happened to Nanoha in Ch.2 of the manga. Maybe it will shed some light into why Nanoha acted in this manner.

Thank you for the link. See? Nanoha had every reason to shoot down Teana. Also, I didn't see one scratch on her body, meaning Nanoha didn't hurt the little idiot, merely made her pass out. I also didn't see Fate and Vita flying to tell Nanoha off for her actions, meaning they judge Nanoha has every right to do what she did. Besides, Nanoha was extremely sad she had to shoot Teana. She doesn't deserve a teacher as cool as Nanoha.

I don't think anyone particularly objects to Nanoha's first shot on Teana, but a number think the second was unecessary. I think we'll see a better explanation in the next ep though, so this is somewhat speculative.
Here's my thinking on this:
It looks like Teana "went for the kill" on this - she probably didn't realise that she could have SERIOUSLY hurt Nanoha with an attack like that (designed to piece the "field" that protects your body, as explained by Vita a few eps ago). She probably thought Nanoha could easily take/avoid it or something - probably hasn't realised how much power limted Nanoha/RH are and how much stronger she's gotten. In other words, Teana was treating it like a real fight. If it was as dangerous as I think it was, Teana was really dumb doing that - that sort of stupidity could get her expelled from the TSAB, if not more. (Imagine if a soldier in training for the army brought in live ammo for a mock battle...)
I think Nanoha felt she had to teach Teana and Subaru a few things. She also had to stop Teana, who had totally lost it and wasn't listening to reason at all. She could have just done a bind on Teana, like with Subaru. I'm sure Nanoha is quite capable of holding both long enough - though Teana might have had to be "arrested" if she didn't calm down properly.
Anyway, I think the reason why Nanoha slapped down Teana hard is not just to punish her, but to teach her (and Subaru) an important lesson: that in a *real* fight, people can die or get badly injured, and why such things can happen. You may even have to watch a friend being killed. Nanoha has been building up their skills steadily, and safely. An important part of training has been self-defence (looks like about half the training has been for that) But if they ignore that training and just charge in recklessly in a desperate attempt to prove themselves, then that's very dangerous. And they could die doing that in a real battle.
Basically, it seems to me that Nanoha knew exactly what she was doing, and why, and probably expected the reaction she got. That's why she was so sad.
Nanoha's probably trained a lot of people and some of them might well have died in battle. (I wonder if Teana's brother was one?)

That's a good speculation. Seeing it again, and reading what was translated above, I have to agree with that. Without thinking beforehand in a fight and just plain charging in is reckless and dangerous.

Amen for that. Nanoha wouldn't be an expert Combat Instructor if she had been judged 'unstable', with 'issues', or other c***. She is also a very well respected mage and one of the three Aces in the Bureau, handling the most difficult type of magic: Flight Magic. They wouldn't have a psycho training cadets and leading experiments with new type of weaponry would they? No, no.

Reading what was said above I have to agree with that. It probably was teaching another lesson, if you fight the way those two did you may get killed. It's a bit of a tough lesson but sometimes I guess you need to be tough. Even if they are angry at Nanoha its better that then the alternative. Which would be letting them continue fighting like that and maybe get themselves killed.

I have to think it was some sneak attack or maybe Nanoha protecting Vita. She's such a powerful person that losing directly just seems hard to believe. But anyone no matter how powerful can be taken down in the right situation. Really want it to be next week already.
Does Shamal have the qualifications to be a psychiatrist? I'd assume a military organization would have some professional for this kind of thing.

Seen the episode too...
God! People's minds can come up with strange things....
I am like a level 1 of understanding Japanese to the whole 50 but this is what I understood...
1. Nanoha is a teacher who punished her students for their mistakes...This isn't math where you get punished for getting 1+1 wrong...This is training for life or death situations.....You do the maths dear fans...
2. Also note that Nanoha did hit Tia TWO times. A Captain and a Vice Captain weren't so far away from them so if she was breaking the rules...They would've come to the rescue of both Nanoha(if she lost herself) or Tia(If her life was in jeopardy) But they remained as they were and none of their faces showed any negative emotions to Nanoha's actions....
3. Nanoha chose to put away her wea'pon and handle the girls with bear hands which farther supports that she was in 100% her right mind...I didn't understand what Tiana and Subaru discussed the night before they both looked so dandy before their trainer nor did I of the Captains and Vice Captains' conversation but I think they both had something to do with those few adrenaline-rushing last minutes...
Final conclusion: PUNISHMENT.
Really guys, think about the line of work those girls will be in....I was actually a little buffed by their ease of training but I let it go as far as this...Now I know how serious working to preserve peace in that Universe is...Or are we forgetting that Subaru could've died an episode ago had it not been for Vita?!!

I'm going to skip most of what you said (Because they've been said before) and focus on this where I can throw it BACK in your face :D:D:D:D
Nanoha had a "Starlight Breaker PLUS" exploded in both her and Yuuno's face.
According to that logic, Nanoha had 'befriended' Yuuno with more firepower, or 'love' if you will, than Fate EVER gotten back in season 1.
SO in other words, Fate got ONE UP by Yuuno.

Just to clarify something if it hasn't already been done:
When Nanoha commands Raising Heart to "Mode Release", she isn't removing a power limiter from her device, she is commanding her device to shut down. If you haven't already noticed, the animation after that was Raising Heart changing from device form to dormant jewel form.
I suspect that Nanoha could have easily blocked the knife attack with a second barrier, but in this case she wanted to get hurt to teach her students an important lesson: you act reckless and the people you work with will get hurt.
Which goes back to the A's to StrikerS manga and what Nanoha said to Vita during "the event": "I'm sorry, it was my mistake..." (or something along those lines). Nanoha was known to act recklessly herself in the past, rushing headlong into things. Something must have happened to change her attitude, and that something is what she is trying to convey to her students.

if you watch the video closly she does put RH back to normal small sphere becuase she using both hands at the same time, left hand against subaru and right hand against tiena, then she does a crossfire (tiena own move) against tiena and then a small divine buster, with just 1 bare hand, yes, the aces are limited down, but there smarter too, which means don't mess with white devil, or your getted owned (befriended) or at worst case serieno free burial service provided by TSAB at taxpayer espense!!!!!

God! People's minds can come up with strange things....
I am like a level 1 of understanding Japanese to the whole 50 but this is what I understood...
1. Nanoha is a teacher who punished her students for their mistakes...This isn't math where you get punished for getting 1+1 wrong...This is training for life or death situations.....You do the maths dear fans...
2. Also note that Nanoha did hit Tia TWO times. A Captain and a Vice Captain weren't so far away from them so if she was breaking the rules...They would've come to the rescue of both Nanoha(if she lost herself) or Tia(If her life was in jeopardy) But they remained as they were and none of their faces showed any negative emotions to Nanoha's actions....
3. Nanoha chose to put away her wea'pon and handle the girls with bear hands which farther supports that she was in 100% her right mind...I didn't understand what Tiana and Subaru discussed the night before they both looked so dandy before their trainer nor did I of the Captains and Vice Captains' conversation but I think they both had something to do with those few adrenaline-rushing last minutes...
Final conclusion: PUNISHMENT.
Really guys, think about the line of work those girls will be in....I was actually a little buffed by their ease of training but I let it go as far as this...Now I know how serious working to preserve peace in that Universe is...Or are we forgetting that Subaru could've died an episode ago had it not been for Vita?!!
I have more theories of this but that should be enough...
Again...I didn't understand a many things but a picture is worth 1000 words...and me and art are really nice friends...

Things don't always go as you plan, and an all-out attack that leaves you naked (so to speak) is going to kill you once things go unexpected. Note how shocked those two were when Nanoha disabled RH's Device Mode, and chose to go melee on them. They clearly didn't expect this turn of events, nor Nanoha not going "Nihaha, it's alright. We all make mistakes~" for once.
Subaru's naivety, and perhaps, even Tia's, since she actually agreed with her about Nanoha going easy on them despite the obvious problems this would cause.
Like what Nanoha said, what they were doing was no longer within training boundaries, but was something akin to "kill-or-be-killed". Had they faced a real enemy, s/he would not warn Subaru about reckless maneuvers. The moment Subaru was thrown off, the opponent could have followed it up with a bind and/or a finishing blow.
The second shot was to show them what IS going to happen in real-life.

Perhaps. However, when faced with a real life-threatening situation, the attacker won't use a magic-only attack. He/she will go for the kill mercilessly. If that was a real-life situation, Teana and Subaru would both be dead.

@Fuyu's first post in this page: Point. I added this in as well to my previous post.
The fact is such: Subaru and Tia came up with a plan that had been based within the (relative) safety zone that training provides. However, such a plan would have dire consequences should they execute it in real battle (as the duo's eventual sorry condition vaguely shows).
Nanoha wants them to know this. That's what the second shot was for. Had those two come across opponents that Nanoha and Fate faced in A's (the Wolkenritter, the Liezes, and ultimately Yami no Sho), would such recklessness help them? They aren't the only ones who can come up with a sneak attack, as Shamal and the Liezes have shown. And YnS pretty much defies every known trick in the book.
Could they last long against such foes, with their current mentality?

It all sounds like a solid understanding. It took a couple hundred posts but we may finally have Nanoha's reasoning down. Probably was to teach a valuable lesson about what can happen if you fight recklessly. Teana gets knocked out, partially due to being unstable and part to teach her what can happen if she losses control in a battle. Subaru gets the painful lesson as well, if you are stupid you may have to watch your friends get hurt or killed. Hopefully they can learn from this and not just be angry about what happened.
Going barehanded was probably to protect Teana from getting really hurt. Raising Heart can get out of hand if one isn't careful. Maybe grabing the blade and getting hurt was meant to shake them up and teach them that if the attack had connected Nanoha really could've been hurt.
Yeah the two decided to use a plan that protected them based on the relative safety of the test. But they took actions that went against the rules of that test. If your going to break the rules you should be prepared for leaving the parts that protect you from serious harm. It's probably for the best that they dealt with this. No doubt if they were fighting like this in A's they wouldn't be going to rest off the test, they'd be in a coffin.
I'm sure they won't need this, hope that Caro and Erio are going to learn from this. While they aren't taking a test any time soon it's something they should learn. Wouldn't want either of them getting blasted around to prove a point.
Nice to see that Fate and Yuuno have a good friendship. Besides I think Yuuno did a good enough job by giving Nanoha her tool of befriending.

Here's a quick translation of the lines at the end of the ep
Nanoha: Stay still. And watch carefully.
Subaru: Nanoha-san!!
Subaru: Tea!!
Nanoha: This is the end of the mock-battle for today. You were both "shot down and terminated".
Nanoha seems to be reminding them about how Tia's brother was killed, and the sorrow and regrets that came with his death.
I'm probably doing a Bad Thing by not reading all of the thread before commenting, but it's late and I'm just excited. (And tired.)
So far in my view, the infamous last scene of the episode can have two broad interpretations as follows:
1) Nanoha snapped due to some incident, and lost her temper. She then used far more force than was strictly necessary to take down Teana.
The way she went all quiet and sorrowful and eerily calm sounds fairly plausible for someone who is really angry. (In fact, when I get really pissed off, I pretty much go all quiet and polite myself.) Raw emotions just get mostly shut down, and channelled into a white-hot lance of purpose that doesn't turn up on the outside except for a sort of tunnel-vision: the next thing that is deemed to be necessary will get done, and anyone/anything else in the way is just... irrelevant.
However, whether this is how Nanoha becomes really angry is unknown; we've never seen her like this in the first series or in A's. The most in A's we've seen is just her getting determined-angry, not intense-rage angry.
Speculation: maybe the much-bandied about Accident in the past where Nanoha got badly injured was due to herself getting careless. In fact, considering how much Vita went off on Teana the previous episode, I'm guessing that Nanoha's carelessness got her in the way of Vita's attack, whether training or otherwise.
A level-headed instructor could have used a Bind on Subaru and a Bind on Teana, with an option to upgrade the Bind on Teana if the latter got really frothy-mouthed. The way Nanoha slammed two attacks into Teana while Binding Subaru and telling her to "watch" means that Nanoha is probably not being level-headed as such. This is entirely plausible; the lack of reactions from the other RF6 members might be due to their not believing that Nanoha really did something like that, and just getting dumbfounded when she did.
After all, if RF6's psych profile division didn't catch Teana's self-esteem issues, I'm not sure if they would catch such a trauma (rarely-triggered?) from Nanoha's past. (I say "rarely-triggered" because I don't think anyone other than Teana would have done anything like that.)
However, her actions could also be interpreted in another way, which puts marginally less "blame" on Nanoha:
2) Nanoha is trying to send a message to Teana and Subaru, and may or may not be in full possession of her wits at the time. (I'll assume the former for this theory, that Nanoha knows exactly what she is doing and the consequences thereof; the latter is a mix between the following speculation and the previous one.)
Nanoha told Subaru to "watch", and then blasted Teana (for the second time). This meant that the message that Nanoha is sending could be towards Teana, or towards Subaru, or perhaps even both. Essentially, Nanoha is willing to be the Bad Cop in order to push her message home.
Somewhat tied in to this would be the speculation of what the message was. Some examples might be:
- "Follow orders, or people will get hurt." This can be directed towards both of them. Since Teana did not seem willing to listen to reason, perhaps Subaru could be shown the consequences instead of being the "victim" (and thus be the one to rein Teana in). Better that this happen in a mock-battle than the real thing.
- "Keep trying to kill yourself, and you might well succeed." This message seems like it might be for Teana, but would actually be obliquely directed at Subaru. Teana's tactics so far seem to be all-or-nothing, where either she wins, or she's probably going to die. So, with Teana unwilling to change her self-destructive tendencies, and Subaru not appearing to really notice this, maybe this will drive home to Subaru how close to the edge Teana is teetering.
- "If you want to fight a real enemy, I'll show you what a real enemy is like." This ties in a bit with the "If I have to be a demon to make you listen, then a demon I'll be" line from A's. Also, there may be shades of it in the above two possible messages. Basically, Nanoha is showing the two Newbies what it's like to fight someone who's well and truly serious. For example, if Teana wants to treat this as a serious battle, then Nanoha may as well oblige her.
- "Your partner's down. What will you do now?" Rather obviously for Subaru; she's seen someone she idolizes shoot down her best friend and partner in cold blood. How she reacts might determine whether she's fit for battle, since Teana obviously isn't.
Now, I speculate (without any evidence) that the truth is a mixture of the two; Nanoha is letting her personal feelings get into training, but she's also conscious of the message that she wants to send, rather than being completely blinded with emotion.
Also, we see big explosions and all that. We don't know whether Nanoha had actually pulled her punches.
Well, that was a rather depressing rush (contradictory as it may seem). I think I'll go watch some Lucky Star to get my good humour back.

They really did a great job in surprising everyone. Making the preview look one way and then hitting us hard with what happens in the test. I think that's a good way of calling it since it was just that massive. Throw in the preview and it was a real shock of an episode.
Well I think dkellis's first theory really examples what everyone was going through when this episode first hit us. Nanoha snapping and really beating Teana beyond what was necessary. We really went through a lot with much hot headed arguing back and forth. It really was helpful when we got a translation from when Nanoha caught the attacks.
The second part is a bit closer to what people are thinking. Nanoha was sending a message, a tough one. Fighting like they were in real combat would get you killed. It's sad since we saw through this episode how hard Nanoha was working to train them, but when the test came they through that away and went in foolishly.
It was probably a mix of being upset and sad from what they were doing. Those two failed the first test because they were reckless. So Nanoha spends all this time training them and when they get a second chance they show that they learned absolutely nothing except how to bring forth stronger attacks.
It'll probably be helpful to read through the thread since a lot of the reasoning has been brought forward. But it is impressive how you came to some of these conclusions just on your own. Have fun getting cheered up via Lucky Star.

It all sounds like a solid understanding. It took a couple hundred posts but we may finally have Nanoha's reasoning down. Probably was to teach a valuable lesson about what can happen if you fight recklessly. Teana gets knocked out, partially due to being unstable and part to teach her what can happen if she losses control in a battle. Subaru gets the painful lesson as well, if you are stupid you may have to watch your friends get hurt or killed. Hopefully they can learn from this and not just be angry about what happened.
Going barehanded was probably to protect Teana from getting really hurt. Raising Heart can get out of hand if one isn't careful. Maybe grabing the blade and getting hurt was meant to shake them up and teach them that if the attack had connected Nanoha really could've been hurt.
Quite true. Also I think Subaru's lesson was harder than Teana's because for her it's a psychological lesson, not physical. Those almost never leave your mind.

Yeah I never expected to get this charged from Yuuno's appeareance, or that last bit about Dark Nonaha. Looks like they do compensate for dulling things down for some angst. Next weeks gonna be anticipated, and I'm sure both the Legion and 300 are looking forward to it for news of Nanoha's injury.

I'm probably doing a Bad Thing by not reading all of the thread before commenting, but it's late and I'm just excited. (And tired.)
So far in my view, the infamous last scene of the episode can have two broad interpretations as follows:
1) Nanoha snapped due to some incident, and lost her temper. She then used far more force than was strictly necessary to take down Teana.
The way she went all quiet and sorrowful and eerily calm sounds fairly plausible for someone who is really angry. (In fact, when I get really pissed off, I pretty much go all quiet and polite myself.) Raw emotions just get mostly shut down, and channelled into a white-hot lance of purpose that doesn't turn up on the outside except for a sort of tunnel-vision: the next thing that is deemed to be necessary will get done, and anyone/anything else in the way is just... irrelevant.
However, whether this is how Nanoha becomes really angry is unknown; we've never seen her like this in the first series or in A's. The most in A's we've seen is just her getting determined-angry, not intense-rage angry.
Speculation: maybe the much-bandied about Accident in the past where Nanoha got badly injured was due to herself getting careless. In fact, considering how much Vita went off on Teana the previous episode, I'm guessing that Nanoha's carelessness got her in the way of Vita's attack, whether training or otherwise.
A level-headed instructor could have used a Bind on Subaru and a Bind on Teana, with an option to upgrade the Bind on Teana if the latter got really frothy-mouthed. The way Nanoha slammed two attacks into Teana while Binding Subaru and telling her to "watch" means that Nanoha is probably not being level-headed as such. This is entirely plausible; the lack of reactions from the other RF6 members might be due to their not believing that Nanoha really did something like that, and just getting dumbfounded when she did.
After all, if RF6's psych profile division didn't catch Teana's self-esteem issues, I'm not sure if they would catch such a trauma (rarely-triggered?) from Nanoha's past. (I say "rarely-triggered" because I don't think anyone other than Teana would have done anything like that.)
However, her actions could also be interpreted in another way, which puts marginally less "blame" on Nanoha:
2) Nanoha is trying to send a message to Teana and Subaru, and may or may not be in full possession of her wits at the time. (I'll assume the former for this theory, that Nanoha knows exactly what she is doing and the consequences thereof; the latter is a mix between the following speculation and the previous one.)
Nanoha told Subaru to "watch", and then blasted Teana (for the second time). This meant that the message that Nanoha is sending could be towards Teana, or towards Subaru, or perhaps even both. Essentially, Nanoha is willing to be the Bad Cop in order to push her message home.
Somewhat tied in to this would be the speculation of what the message was. Some examples might be:
- "Follow orders, or people will get hurt." This can be directed towards both of them. Since Teana did not seem willing to listen to reason, perhaps Subaru could be shown the consequences instead of being the "victim" (and thus be the one to rein Teana in). Better that this happen in a mock-battle than the real thing.
- "Keep trying to kill yourself, and you might well succeed." This message seems like it might be for Teana, but would actually be obliquely directed at Subaru. Teana's tactics so far seem to be all-or-nothing, where either she wins, or she's probably going to die. So, with Teana unwilling to change her self-destructive tendencies, and Subaru not appearing to really notice this, maybe this will drive home to Subaru how close to the edge Teana is teetering.
- "If you want to fight a real enemy, I'll show you what a real enemy is like." This ties in a bit with the "If I have to be a demon to make you listen, then a demon I'll be" line from A's. Also, there may be shades of it in the above two possible messages. Basically, Nanoha is showing the two Newbies what it's like to fight someone who's well and truly serious. For example, if Teana wants to treat this as a serious battle, then Nanoha may as well oblige her.
- "Your partner's down. What will you do now?" Rather obviously for Subaru; she's seen someone she idolizes shoot down her best friend and partner in cold blood. How she reacts might determine whether she's fit for battle, since Teana obviously isn't.
Now, I speculate (without any evidence) that the truth is a mixture of the two; Nanoha is letting her personal feelings get into training, but she's also conscious of the message that she wants to send, rather than being completely blinded with emotion.
Also, we see big explosions and all that. We don't know whether Nanoha had actually pulled her punches.
Well, that was a rather depressing rush (contradictory as it may seem). I think I'll go watch some Lucky Star to get my good humour back.
I should think that all these reasons applies to this situation. Of course whether Nanoha was thinking of them is another question but introspection would render tham all valid.
It's like digging, the deeper you go, the more you can come up with.

@Fuyu: She might have been shooting her trainees with the magical equivalent of rubber bullets, which hurt like hell but supposedly don't kill. It still doesn't mitigate the fact that it is dangerous, we'll see how clean-up occurs next week.

Let's hope we aren't seeing people getting tortured. YnS and bondage is one thing, and we did have Fate getting whipped in the first season, so I guess anything is possible.

OK, finally watched the ep and finished reading through the whole board. <pant, pant>
The first thing that I did after watching this ep was go back and watch the infamous "it's okay if I'm a demon" scene from A's. White Devil is back baby! Having Nanoha do this takes her away from the super-nice coddling trainer that we were sort of being led into believing Nanoha to be. It just shows how Nanoha can be strict if she needs to, just prefers not to.
My hope is that Teana and Subaru are mature enough to take this lesson and learn from it, because it could definitely go either way. Either they both get pissed at Nanoha and the emo spirals out of control, or they finally snap to and get their act together.
Two other things to note, from the training scenes that we all (myself included) immediately forgot about during the last three minutes of the episode:
1- Subaru makes STAIRS out of Wing Road. I know she's made platforms before, but that really surprised me. I love how other characters can stand on the roads that she makes, it really sets Subaru's 'flying' apart from the regular hovering of the rest of the characters.
2- Teana's well on her way to busting out with some gun katas. Especially the part with her blocking Subaru's punches and pointing the gun, I'm hoping isn't just gonna be another random training exercise. I wanna see Teana have to fend of a close combat fighter by blocking and shooting like that. EPIC.

I suppose Nanoha's example is not so much the "I'll kill you now" enemy, but more of "I'll destroy all that you love one by one and watch you suffer" type. (Less like Book of Darkness, more like Precia Testarossa. And yes, I know that this classification is debatable.)
Like I said, I'm not sure that this is what Nanoha's actual message is, if she does actually have a message.
