View Full Version : Slice of life, anyone?
I love this type of anime. I'm currently watching Lucky Star and Asatte no Houkou. I see AIR, Kanon 2006, Suzumiya Haruhi, Ichigo Mashimaro and Azumanga Daioh. I love this genre of anime and I want more~ more~.
Any suggestions?

Based on the series you have listed, ARIA the ANIMATION (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=5504) and the sequel ARIA the NATURAL (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6425) should match up with your tastes nicely.
That's not slice of life.
Mmm.. I think series like Suzuka (http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=3203) are slice of life.
Shinigami no Ballad (http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=3572) - 6 episodes, some people like it some don't. :D :p
Ahhhh... Slice of life. Probably the genre I'm most fond of at the moment.

Yes, I watch only the first episode :heh:

seconded Aishiteruze Baby, Honey and Clover!
U might like Welcome to NHK (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6357) one of favorites =D
Welcome to NHK (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6357) is about drug addicts, NEETs and all other sorts of explicit and excessive behaviour.
Isn't Shana something like 11 or so~ O__o
I don't think showing how people go mental is exactly the slice of life she wanted.
Sensei no Ojikan kinda like Azudai. You could try Maria-Sama ga Miteru, but it have a yuri-ish feeling.
Bokura ga Ita is good if you like something with a lot of romance.
I see AIR, Kanon 2006, Suzumiya Haruhi, Ichigo Mashimaro and Azumanga Daioh. I love this genre of anime and I want more~ more~.
I really don't think Air, Kanon, and Haruhi are "slice-of-life" as they incorporate significant elements of fantasy and/or scifi in the basic story. Good shows, but not really slice-of-life (unless you lead a very weird life! :heh: ).
If you want something more like Ichigo Marchimaro, Azumanga Daioh, and Lucky ☆ Star, you might want to check out:
Girl's High (aka High School Girls) about a group of female first year high school students who are all excited to start living the life of sophisticated high school girls (which seems to mainly mean dating and karaoke parties). They are a bit wilder than the girls in many of the other slice-of-life series, but I though they were very funny.
Manabi Straight (aka Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight!)- This one has a bit of "near future scifi" in it, but it's mainly a high school, slice-of-life series about a group of girls attending a High School that is scheduled to be closed due to dropping enrollment.
^ Yes, my life is really weird desu~.
You could try Maria-Sama ga Miteru, but it have a yuri-ish feeling.
I try to watch it (only becouse the yuri-ish feeling :3), but it is really boring :heh:

I'd recommend Hidamari Sketch (http://www.animesuki.com/series.php/958.html), another of the four girls go to high school genre, in this case an arts academy. To me it's almost prototypically slice-of-life, as essentially nothing happens in any episode. This show has grown on me over time, and I find it more enjoyable than either Manabi Straight or Lucky Star which are its closest sisters.
I'd agree with Cats that NHK should be rated at least PG-13 in the US system. The manga is rated M in the US. GONZO did tone down some things in the anime like the cocaine usage, but the entire tone of this series is more adult than the ones ~Shana listed.
I'd definitely endorse Azumanga Daioh if you've never seen it and might throw School Rumble (see sig for link) into the mix as well. While the latter is not strictly a "slice-of-life" show, it has a lot of the same comedic appeal to me as Azumanga did while adding in boys and romance.
Here are a few other recommendations (see sig for links):
Windy Tales (http://www.animesuki.com/series.php/482.html) - middle school girls discover there are people and cats (!) who can control the wind
Hataraki Man - the life of a female editor in a Japanese magazine publisher
Bartender - a set of stories about the role of alcohol in human lives and remembrance; might be less interesting to younger viewers as many of the characters are as old as I am!
Planetes (http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=895) - a show about a crew of people whose job is to collect space trash (dead rockets, etc.)
Jungle wa Itsumo Hale nochi Guu (http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=228) - one of the funniest shows ever made about an (alien?) girl who comes to live with a boy and his mother in a very weird jungle village
I always have a hard time drawing the line between "slice-of-life" shows and what Americans would call the "situation comedy" genre. Shows like REC (http://www.animesuki.com/series.php/747.html) or Nodame Cantabile, while essentially comedies, have a slice-of-life feel as well. However they do have more plot than a show like Hidamari Sketch, where an entire episode is devoted to one of the characters spending the day in bed with a fever and her weird (and gorgeously-animated) fever dreams. Still, Asatte no Houkou is often characterized as a slice-of-life show, and it assuredly has a plot.
I watched a couple of episodes of High School Girls, but it seemed relentlessly ecchi, even if was written by a woman who claimed it was based on her own experiences. The whole premise seems to be to show that teenaged girls can be just as disgusting as teenaged boys.

Some low-key slice of life shows:
To Heart
Lamune
Kokoro Library
If you want a bigger slice, I recommend these:
SHUFFLE! (and I mean quite literally)
School Days (perhaps?)
Thanks guys, I'll watch Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (I think it's a manga, but well, I can read), Today in class 5-2 (I watch the first two episodes, but I forgot download the 3rd ep. and the fansub didn't do the ep.4 :( well, the RAWs exist), Genshiken, Kamichu!, Aria the ANIMATION/NATURAL, Nodame Cantabile, Futatsu no Spica (I think it here was licensed, hmm...), To heart and School Days (It isn't unaired? if it's aired, who's episodes it haves at the time?).
A bunch :heh:
Other than the Yokohama shows, the show with the strongest slice of life elements is probably Figure 17. Despite its science fiction and action elements, most of every episode is just about Tsubasa and Hikaru as they go through their everyday routine. It's quite possibly one of my favorite slice of life shows. However, this is much more of a general recommendation as it's science fiction elements make it completely different from the OP's other shows.

I think of the "slice of life" category as determined by what the show is trying to accomplish rather than whether it has an over-arching plot or not. A slice of life show's main focus is about placing the viewer into the "life and times" of the characters. Thus, they are best characterized by their emphasis on setting, theme and mood; with a de-emphasis of common plot elements; and with gentle pacing. The Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou works are pretty much the poster children of this sub-genre (slice of life shows are almost always dramas as well). I think that while many comedies have slice of life elements, most of them aren't slice of life shows since their focus is totally different. This is especially true of the more spastic comedies.

Those are all very good choice, and they fit fairly well with the shows that you initially posted. The School Days anime hasn't aired yet, but DanielSong39 may have been referring to the original PC game which is largely made up of animated sequences or "episodes".
Today in class 5-2
Oh yeah, should've warned you about this one. There's a big difference between the manga and the anime. The former is more of light comedy about school life while the latter places too much emphasis on innuendo which I think is poorly executed and unsuitable given the context of 5th grade. The art itself also suffers quite a bit in the transition.
Anyway, nice list there. I'll probably look out for some of the other titles mentioned which I haven't seen yet.

Thanks guys, I'll watch Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (I think it's a manga, but well, I can read), There is two two-OVA series (one from 1998 and one from 2003), but they're virtually just advertisements for the manga. I will recommend the anime, though, since if you're anything like me or most people in this thread, once you get a taste of YKK, you'll just want more and more. But, certainly, read the manga. It's a masterpiece... there's no other way to describe it.
Edit: And that's not a word a throw around lightly, so when I say it, I really mean it.
Second reading Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. xD
* Why didn't I think of it earlier.. blasphemy.
I finally watch the first OVA, I want more. Currently downloading the second OVA.
After these, I'll download To heart. It have all my atention ~~

To Heart has been licensed by Rightstuf. Maybe you can download To Heart 2, but that's an entirely different animal.

I hope/think it here isn't licensed (I suppouse I can find the spanish sub, no? If it are licensed in USA it not have to be a problem to me, right?) if not, I can find the DVDs ~~ After To Heart/s2 I'll watch Kamichu!.
Hmm. It appears that nobody's mentioned Yotsubato (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yotsubato) yet. It's by Kiyohiko Azuma of Azumanga Daioh fame.
Sidenote: I'm surprised to see other people besides me recommending or even mentioning YKK. :)

try this one hmm... most likely for azumanga daioh it's
Doki Doki School Hours/sensei no ojikan but azumanga is still the best!!
manabi straight and school rumble
your favorite genre is what i like too ^_^ ichigo mashimaro and lucky star is still the best!! hehehee
Another vote for Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou here. I'd seen various mentions of it so I downloaded the four OVA episodes, and after I'd watched the first two and while I was waiting for the later two to download, I ferreted about until I'd found the manga as well.
The anime is quite beautiful (and I do love the insert songs), but the manga is much, much better. I really don't like reading things on the computer, but for this I make an exception.
I wish someone would release an English language version of the manga so this delightful series would become better known outside Japan (I don't know how popular it was in Japan, but it ran for something like 12 years in a magazine, so it must have been reasonably popular, right?). I'd definitely buy that.
I also wish there was a full length anime series. That would have been lovely!
I also wish there was a full length anime series. That would have been lovely!
That would be quite a hard sell though since it's comedy and moé factors aren't as high as other slice of life series like Ichigo Mashimaro, Lucky Star, and ARIA. Even the drama is different since there's no actual conflict; tears are caused by nostalgia, happiness, or black sugar. :p
A licensed English translation is more likely but that's not much either (probably 10% chance vs 4% chance of getting a full length anime series). In fact, it's one of the reasons that pushed me to start learning Japanese language.

YKK is very popular, though like the manga, we are all quietly accepting YKK's spectacular power of existance, and so don't make much noise about it.
Sigh. The other Alpha is still up there, all alone in that spaceplane, wondering what's happening on the surface... That's kind of sad...

I think Mahoraba~Heartful Days counts as slice of life, since a lot of the episodes revolve around the characters' everyday lives.

I'ld recommend reading the manga as well. The TV show only covers about half of the content of the manga, so it misses alot of really good parts.
Thanks for all the good comments of YKK :D
By the way, anyone knows about a good School Life [maybe romance]? Those two genres take me :eyespin:

Azumanga Daioh, perhaps?
Slice of Life is my favorite genre.
It's probably underrated but it's always been one of my favorite series for a slice of life show. It's really short too.
Piano: The Melody of a Young Girl's Heart (Piano TV) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piano:_The_Melody_of_a_Young_Girl%27s_Heart)
Thanks guys, I will check those two ^^

Slice of Life in its purest form is NieA Under 7 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NieA_7). And YKK, but that has already been mentioned several times.
And my favorite high school romance at the moment is Lovely Complex (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lovely_Complex). A shoujo romance comedy which has already drawn in a lot of people.

Even though it's already been mentioned in this thread, Hataraki Man (http://www.nihonreview.com/anime/hataraki-man/) is a great series if you want something with a bit more bite than the typical slice-of-life anime. It's a very grounded and mature josei Niotamina series with a rather atypical-for-anime setting (ie, the working office). I recommend.
I just finished watching Kamichu! (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=5356) about a month ago and I actually found it more relaxing than the ARIA animated series. The characters manage to be cute without making complete idiots out of themselves, the music sounds great, and the fact that the story takes place in the 80's (no celphones, no beepers, and the NES/Famicom was still popular) gives it a rather nostalgic atmosphere.
The story focuses on Yurie Hitotsubashi and how she deals with her recently acquired powers as a god of the Shinto pantheon. Despite her new abilities, she still has to deal with issues that typically come in the life of middle school students and for those, she has the support of her two best friends Mitsue and Matsuri.
With the exception of the episode featuring the WWII battleship Yamato (which seems to glorify Japan's militaristic past :eyebrow:), I thoroughly enjoyed the series. It feels like a cross between The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya ( for the "girl with godly powers" scenario), Zettai Shonen (for the provincial seting), and ARIA (for the relaxing atmosphere).
Okay. I've watched many, many shows after my last post in this thread, so, I must ask...
Moar please?
I musn't let this thread die~
What have you watch, what have you liked, and what have you disliked? And why? If you can answer that, then it'd be a lot easier for everyone to give you more suggestions.
