Anyone else find it interesting that those 3 odd, yet freaky characters are named 3 of the 7 Deadly Sins? Makes me wonder if there are 4 more out there. And I wonder what role they're playing in this series, and what was the point of them taking over Lior, and that whole Priest/Rebellion incident. What's the purpose of all that? I'm glad there are so many holes and questions to the series. I'm loving it.
Envy eh? I wondered which of the 7 deadly sins she was named after. I had made the connection with Lust and Gluttony, but missed Envy's name. I wonder if the other 4 will show up in later episodes.
I think it's a given they'll show up. But more importantly, what the hell are they? They are definitely not human. I personally believe they're some freak accident or something dealing with Alchemy. Maybe they have a connection to Ed and Al's father.

Envy's name was mentioned at the very end of Episode 2.

Lust, Gluttony and Envy. The remaining 4 are Anger, Sloth, Pride and Greed. I would be surprised if we didn't run into them eventually. It seems kind've obvious.

Guesses on who they are: A group of Monolith alchemist that are named after each sin to prove alchemy can destroy man kind in each and every one of these forms, Like gluttony he uses alchemy to either to expand his own mouth or shrink peoples bodies to eat them. Lust she gives people fake philosopher stones in hope they they become corrupt and in the end destroy their own nation. Along side of lust she gives the people the rarest of things and strip it from them causing people to turn on each other.

Envy said that she doesn't remember her original form, so it seems they aren't human.. now I just can't wait for the rest of the episodes ;_;
ermmm... Envy looks more like a 'he' than a 'her' to me... :uhoh:

Yeah but Envy doesn't remember his/her true form...maybe it was a girl before? Who really cares? The fact is, Envy is evil and is a guy in its current form.

In the manga.....
Greed, Wrath (yes, wrath not Anger) show up. Sloth makes a little cameo. Pride has yet to show up though.
They remind me of the movie "Se7en", in which Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman starred in. They acted as 2 detectives who faced a bizzare mass-murder case where each of the murder had a theme relating to the 7 deadly sins.
A very nicely-done movie BTW. ;)

Yeah, that movie was very good.
Anyway, I don't see how a 'sloth' character could be very scary...what's he gonna do: Snore at you?

I think sloth himself isn't slow, but he has the power to turn people into sloths. So if you're lazy you won't want to do anything and you'll either starve or waste away.

Well, in the opening moments of ep 14, Envy does say (in Head Priest form) that they're doing all this to create the philosopher's stone. This definitely coincides with Ed and Al's quest for the stone too.

ya know this was bought up a few times when the first FMA post came to the main fourm
since the show is 52 episodes i bet that we won't see the other 4 till after 26, but that's just my guess.

This is sorta off topic but if you read american comics, like JSA (Justice Society of America, the first group of superheros) vs. JLA (Justice League of America, Batman/Supermans group) team members from both sides get pocessed by one of the seven sins, and Dr. Fate gets Sloth, so in his part of the world, everyone just slept, I wonder if Sloth in FMA can do the samething, makes for one slow battle though. :heh:
Sloth turn fights into Matrix style

I've been seeing some weird stuff on this forum so I'd like to you know....clarify some things? At least going by the manga anyway.
So far each of the Uroboros has a special ability. Wrath, aka Bradley, has the "ultimate eye" (it even has the Uroboros symbol on it making really freaky) which makes him really hard to hit.
Greed, who looks like a pimp, has the "ultimate shield". Lust has the "ultimate halbred". Sloth looks as built up as Potemkin from Guilty Gear, without all of the armor. I wouldn't be surprised if his special ability has something to do with super strength. Nothing's been revealed exactly about what Envy or Gluttony can do (ultimate mouth maybe?). Pride doesn't seem to actually exist yet.

Well, since Envy is a shapeshifter that doesn't remember his/her(?) original form. I guess he/she/it could be both male or female.
(I've only read the manga as far as ToriyamaWorld has translated, so I coud be wrong though.)

I just look at the Chinese scanlation, and Wrath, aka President King Bradley is quite powerful in his extremely fast attack with his sabers (which seemes to pierce and cut through everything). I wonder just how fully functioning these Uroboros are, since King Bradley has a wife and son. He is a newer created homunculus (he was created after Greed broke away from Father, the creator of Uroboros).
Yawn... i heard my name so i decided that i woud get off my lazy arse and reply... i will be making a cameo later along with the rest of my compatriots...
on a side note: i think it is funny that the 7 deadly sins (christian) are being used in an anime completely deviod of christian religion and ideals... I think its perculiar.. not wrong but unussual. I love the fact that ed doesn;t even beleive in god; but that the whole evil base (excluding scar) is entirely focused on evils portryaed in christian religion...
what a decodomy
Personal i a Catholic, enjoy FMA due to the deep plot, Scar is a zealot, so what, every faith has thier zealots.
Jews had the orginal Zealots in the 1st century
Christians had alot durring the dark ages.
Islam has had them for the last 1500 years
I think that Scar is more based off Islamic zealots rather than the which burners of 300+ years ago.

what a decodomy
Welcome to Japan...the country where you can get as close to atheism....even though the majority of the population say "we have no religion," our country is based on living with Buddhist and Shintoist virtues and cultures with a dose of Christianity.
Many people here actually ponder when asked the question: "What is your religion?"
Some people answer:
A. "Well...my parents are buried at a Buddhist temple, so I guess we are Buddhists"
Or:
B. "But, we were married in the traditional way...so does that make us Shintoist?"
And:
C. "Oh yeah, it's Christmas...what to buy for my children....hey, that's a nice looking cake!"
So to answer your question: Japanese anime is made in Japan - a country where everything is mixed up and you come to conclusion - we really don't have a religion we dwelve deeply into. Therefore, you have animes that seem to combine with religion (Chrno Crusade, Hagane no renkinjutsushi, Neon Genesis Evangelion)...but in a sense, it all really doesn't make sense.
A good quote would be one of the makers of Evangelion: "Japan has no religion that we dearly believe in....that's why the whole concept of Christianity and stuffs like that are cool and mysterious. That's why we added all those stuffs into Evangelion...and it made it even weirder."
Bottom line, all I wanna know is what is the real purpose of these ppl? Theyre kewl and all and I know they want the phil. stone but its driving me mad not knowing why exactly they want it. World Domination? TO regain something they have lost? Or to just sell it on ebay for a great sum of money? I just really wanna know.
Well... you don't expect every character to simply pop up and immediatedly say what their final goal is, is it? All good things will be revealed in good time :)

As far as their goals go, if you've been following the manga (and I'm talking about the ones that have already been scanlated), it's already been hinted at several times. I don't remember Lust mentioning hitobashira in the anime at all in the scenes that loosely followed the manga.
Lust and the others are "hoarding" sacrifices. These would be skilled alchemists. So what do they do? They put them into the hands of the government by attracting them with all the rewards that National Alchemists get.
As for what they're going to sacrificed for? Dunno. Obviously it's going to involve either the Philosopher's Stone or the "God" that showed up in volume 6.

Methinks that the homonculi (I think that is the correct plural) might have been manifested through some form of human transmutation, however, this would mean that they were made via human transmutation, so someone could do it. There is also the possiblity that they are like Ed and Al's attempt at human transmutation, and have joined with together, this could also be why Pride does not exist yet as only 6 attempts have been made that were as successful as Ed and Al's. This would also give them a reason to want to get the Philosophers stone, ie. escape this world, which they can't do by killing themselves.

Hum, I'd say that Greed is pretty much unmade by Father at the end of Chapter 31. It is possible to kill them, it just take a lot of effort.
Hum, I'd say that Greed is pretty much unmade by Father at the end of Chapter 31. It is possible to kill them, it just take a lot of effort. Homuculi info bits (by end of manga chp 31)
1. Each possess a special power.
2. All have the symbol of the winged serpent marked on them.
3. They do not age (except Wrath). This also points out that the Father is centuries old.
4. They are near indestructable (regenerative abilities).
5. Each possess a part of the Father's soul but display seperate unqiue personalities.
6. They all serve the Father (well... all of them except Greed), his objective is their objective.
7. Their objective so far is to encourage the "growth" of Edward to be a sacrifice later.
Note that the machine hooked up to the Father might be a life-support machine. Either because of his advanced age (centuries) or that the process of creating homuculi takes a lot out of him (soul).
Greed has been broken down to his basic components and the Father consumed back the part of his soul that was bestowed upon Greed (looks like the liquid is a Philosopher Stone). Yes, Greed is dead.

Yeah... It is easy to discern how the manga relates to god all the time...
I guess, using god in a science based manga makes their world seem a hell of a lot closer...
Hmm...I'm still a bit unclear on who these homunculi are.
Wrath is King Bradley, right? And Greed is that the one that was crucified and killed? So...which one is Sloth? *_* Is is this guy (http://www.geocities.com/shortyedward/01.html)? But then, which "sin" is this guy? (http://www.geocities.com/shortyedward/02.html)

I wouldn't be surprised. Izumi and Sigu met Hoenheim back at Central in volume 4 and the father was at Central around that time.
If Bradley is able to keep up with maintaining two separate lives, I guess Hoenheim could do the same thing with his family and his "family".
The only real problem would be the age. The father would have to be over 200 years old.
I'm more interested in finding out what Kimberly's relationship is to the group though.

Fuhrer is just a title. It is not personified.
fuhrer also fuehrer
NOUN: An absolute ruler, especially one who is harsh and oppressive: Big Brother, despot, dictator, man on horseback, oppressor, strongman, totalitarian, tyrant

Just because one infamous person called himself the fuhrer doesn't mean that term should be comdemned. The next time somebody commits travesties of that magnitude and insist on calling himself Overlord, should we comdemn that title too?
Anyways, the Fuhrer title might serve as an insight on how Bradley metes out his rule. This might explain why some people openly hate the military but do not try to incite revolt.

The two most famous generalissimo of the 20th Century are: Generalissimo Franco and Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek both achieve their title via a military coup. Hitler is technically elected. Furthermore, generalissimo also properly denotes the supreme military commander.

BigFire, like I said. Fuhrer is a title, not a personification. It dictates the method in which a ruler rules, not how he got there in the first place. Please do not personify titles.
Generalissimo is not the only official title for a supreme military commander as well. There are many many cultures with different titles for thier supreme military commanders (as well as portfolios).
If there is to be further debate on application of Fuhrer & its appropriateness, I believe it is better to move off to PM.

So we know they are artifical humans, and we know that they hate Ed's dad. Can we asume that they were created by Ed'd dad? But lust looks a lot like that woman that scar's brother is trying to revive. So maybe he made them?

I think all the Sins were made by different people. It seems that Lust was made by Scar's brother, and that's probably true. She has a close relationship with Envy and Gluttony, so they were all probably created around the same time. But they couldn't have all been created by Hohenheim, because Greed's been imprisoned for 120 years or so, and I'm sured Hohenheim isn't that old.

Manga. Spoiler.
...unless Father himself isn't truly human or obtained immortality? Although Hohenheim is popularly intepreted as Father, this is not yet confirmed even in the manga. While I do agree that Ed and Al's father is most likely not any ol' alchemist, the guy could've created Lust, Envy, Greed, Gluttorny and Sloth...then created Wrath...took a break from it all and married Trisha...then returned to his original business.

Although IMO, the manga Sloth seems more muscular than fat. Wonder why s/he is chained up?
More spoiler regarding anime Sloth:
Okay, once more I present the question... how in the world is the secretary anything like Sloth? Gah! So frustrating! Except maybe that she doesn't need to move for her water powers to do stuff, so she can be lazy and just sit in a chair and let her water do stuff for her. Still, I like the big, hulking, chained-up Sloth more ^^
From what the last episode said, is it really a safe bet to assume that the Homunculus are specifically-created Assassins intended to remove evidence leading to the Philosopher's Stone? And that Ed's father worked for the military in Lab 5 to create them (Thus his vanishing)? Seems to explain how they can know so much about it and have such potent personal abilities, but not explain why they would want it in order to turn human...
Mephista
2004-03-29, 19:41
Am i the only one who didn't believe lust when she said they wanted to become human? That line just reeked of bullshit to me. Why would they want to be turned into inferior beings when they seem to enjoy their superhuman powers so much? As opposed to ed and al, who only use force when necessary and really hate fighting... well, envy said he hated fighting in episode 22, but he sounded really sarcastic and proceeded to kick ed's ass with a smile on his face right after that. :\
I think they have much more sinister goals than that, and becoming human isn't one of them. Lust probably fed him that line to try and coax him into making the stone. Even if they do eventually want to become human, they'll probably only want to do that after they're done taking over the world or whatever they have in mind.
And as far as anime sloth...
When i first heard that the secretary was a homunculus, i couldn't figure out which one she could be, but now that i think about it, she is really lethargic. Her power is also loosely related, at least it makes sense to me. I imagined sloth to be a huge blob that would just sit on people and crush or smother them. The water is a really cool way to suffocate someone without even moving her body, so i think it fits.
Hmmm. But Envy was very, very adamant about being 'born' and not created. Maybe they think they have no souls, or somesuch. Or - suitably evil - if they become Human they can use Alchemy, and thus use the Philosopher's Stone for whatever they want...
But yeah, the Sins seem to be very subtle about their base. Not in-your-face (Except for Gluttony, but even that is better done then it could of been.) And Sloth is more about lack of action then being fat and lazy to me, really; Wasting your life away with no care. They do seem to embody that rather well, without being nearly as cliche. And Gluttony's fat enough for the two of them!
I guess the image of Westerner's idea of "sloth" and our idea of "sloth" ("taiman") is different.
From the top of my head, a "sloth" in modern-day Japanese standards would be a "puutaro-" or a "freeter" - those people who live with their parents well into their late twenties, not getting a stable job (or taking on odd jobs), using and leeching off their parents and relatives.
I have a co-worker who is like that; twenty-eight and still lives in his parent's house. And he wonders why "I don't know what's wrong with you - don't you know how to save money? I always have money!" "Hey look at my new car that my dad bought for me! It's the latest BMW Z4! Ain't it slick?!" "Hey, listen - you gotta take a break once in a while. Take a trip to Guam or something. You do have the cash right?"
Sure, I'm certain he would have the money if he isn't paying any mortage or rent nor utility bills as he leeches off his parents' house.
...ugaaa! I hate work. Sometimes I even wonder why I bother living just to make a living.

Haha, in that case I know a lot of extreme Sloths. :D Sloth seems more drugged then anything though

Hmm... true, that's weird. I guess i associate being lazy with being fat because where i'm from (especially my family), everyone worries about their weight. You're practically guaranteed to get fat if you don't exercise, no matter what or how much you eat. :\ I don't wanna speak for a whole half of the world, but when i think of sloth, i take it a step further and picture a dude who just stays home watching tv all day and doesn't move.
Incidentally, i know exactly one person who's a "free baiter" in japan, and he doesn't live with his parents. He just works several part-time jobs instead of one full-time one, so by that image, a freeter doesn't strike me as lazy as much as lacking direction. But yeah, that guy sounds annoying.
Well, first of all... WRATH IS NOT KING BRADLEY! Wrath is actually the son of Izumi Curtis, and PRIDE IS KING BRADLEY! And "Father" actually (in the anime) is Dante...
Hohenheim (Ed and Al's father) is about 400 years old and created Envy... :dots:
yeah well... I reffered to the Anime -.- now I notice the manga DOES have Bradley as Wrath -.-
