This episode KICKED MY BUTT. I thought I was going to be all jaded and unemotional about this (sure, I was prepared to feel suspense etc.), but it actually left me with a dark unpleasant feeling in my stomach. Who knew? I guess the anime has more of a visceral kick than the manga version, after all.

I am getting to despise Light even more ... 2 more till then end... hope it rocks!

Kiyomi Takada knows too much... She knows who Kira is. She knows Light has had other people carrying out judgments for him. And since she was passing on Light's messages to Mikami, she knows everything that Light communicated to Mikami.

Light pretty much revealed everything to her during their meetings.

Cease and Desist emails have been sent to all DN fansubbers... Why 2 episodes before the end!?

Didn't expect Mello to die as easily as he did. We haven't seen him at all since Light's dad died, so I was hoping he'd go out in style.

The other surprise was Matt; he didn't get much time. I was expecting him to do something jaw dropping due to the amount of people that love him... Guess I'll have to start reading the manga again to try and understand.

Btw, did anyone else think Light was going to kill Aizawa and the other guy (forget his name) when he used his watch in the car? The way he said they were careless made me think he was going to take his chance to kill the investigation team...until my brain started working.

It probably has to do with the anime having caught up with the English release of the manga.

WOW this was an awesome episode. I would give it a 1/10 because it was PAINFUL to see three characters die in such fashion (especially Matt's hot), BUT IT'S FOR THE SAKE OF KIRA'S NEW WORLD MWHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!! And yes, I know what happens.

It's like a chess game and it's proceeded into the end game. My own end game can be flawed due to by reluctance to sacrifice my pieces but Light doesn't have that problem. He's not even playing with pieces but with real people he has relationships with and he still doesn't hesitate, it's amazing. Dealing out his own "divine" justice unopposed is everything to him. His god complex makes it too easy to justify why he is in the wrong, if he didn't have that then the moral question becomes much more difficult to ponder. Another outstanding episode, getting done with an episode of death note leaves me with the same sense of satisfaction I get after eating a large tasty meal.

Am I supposed to understand why Mello put Takada's clothes into a box and "mailed" it somewhere?

And how did Takada burn something? She couldn't have found a lighter or anything.

This episode was crazily fantastic!
I just can't believe how all three of them died like that... just so... - bang ya dead - kinda way. Mello seemed to know it was gonna happen though. Matt - well he just had what 10 seconds of fame I was so excited he'd appear in this ep too and what happens bang bang bang. Takada, I hate her, but did feel sorry for her... I'll add I liked that fade affect (or whatever it was) with her crying and Light going to the others 'lets go.'
I too wonder how everything caught fire...
Can't think of anything else to contribute, I'm in shock from the ep and the C&D news (I just read it like a minute after seeing the episode.) I dunno why, what I do know is trust something like this to happen when its so close to finishing... they can't leave us hanging like that! Whaa...

Btw, did anyone else think Light was going to kill Aizawa and the other guy (forget his name) when he used his watch in the car?
Heh, don't you mean '35' and his name is Ide, and yes I did! Thats what I thought at first too.

just want to add: (kurohana left out an important part of Takada's call to Mikami)After telling Mikami to judge as much as possible, she added "my address is..."
Well thats important!! Thank you.

A question: why was Takada so upset (she kept weeping non-stop - not apparent in the manga) after killing Mello and after Light told her to continue judging the criminals? Was it the anime's way of adding depth to her character?

I would guess that she knew Kira was going to kill her. She was commanded to tell Mikami to continue judging, hence a blanket command that she was no longer going to be the in-between

^ She had obviously tried to climb through the window. Going on the size of her boobs (they looked big from one angle I saw!), the hole wouldn't be quite big enough for her to get through without doing lots of damage to herself.

Forgot to add this before - The first part of the episode was executed excellently by Madhouse. They really are amazing, they made a simple scene where we see all the characters doing there thing have an effect on me.

I predicted this episode would be Mello's and that Takada would die. I wonder...will next week be the same again, only this time it being Near's episode and Mikami being the one to die?

Am I supposed to understand why Mello put Takada's clothes into a box and "mailed" it somewhere?

I'd imagine he did it so there wouldn't be any evidence linking her belongings to her body, the same reason he didn't kill her in the back of his truck. His plan was probably to kill her in a place no-one goes to and then make sure no-one would be able to recognize the body.

It's rather silly that he showed respect and allowed one of Kira's closest followers to remove her clothes with her back to him. Never trust a woman... :P

And how did Takada burn something? She couldn't have found a lighter or anything.

Again, it was a bit silly, Light couldn't have known what she had with her in the back of the truck. Wouldn't have looked too good for Light if Takada had died from a heart attack due to being unable to set fire to anything and was found dead with a piece of the Death Note...

Edit: Wait a sec! How did she manage to get the phone? o.O There were no instructions written. Now that I think aboit it for more than a second, she could've got Mello to open the door before dying...

She killed a person for the first time - not some distant criminal but a kidnapper, merely by writing his name in the piece of paper and it had effect.Than she had to climb and break window to get his phone and see his body like this - eyes wide opened. Plus she still was all naked... that's a shock, isn't it. And Light acts cold, caring more about her mission than about her state.

Going on the size of her boobs
Which have increased in size from the manga.

The start of this episode was absolutely fantastic. That one BGM that should appear on the third soundtrack works perfectly for Death Note. I was very much in awe through out that scene.

Brilliant episode. I never was a huge Mello fan until this part in the story --- there's just something about his attitude at this point that i enjoy seeing. Same goes for LOL Matt who's so awesome, even he doesn't understand. His speech before death, so good.

Also, another point in the series where you see the true Kira.

That track has given extra emotion and a sense of darkness everytime it's been used. I didn't think the first track on the first soundtrack would be beaten in quality.

After 35/37 episodes, DN has been as close to perfection in terms of anime as I can imagine. The only real weakness I can think of is the lack action...not much of a weakness when Death Note wouldn't work with Bruce Lee in it. Unless the subtitle quality is awful, I'll be buying the box set when/if it makes it over here.

It's funny thinking back to when L died; manga readers were acting like the series was over, and as a result everyone who hadn't read the manga expected the worst. I love it when low expectations get blown away. :p

Anyway. Episode 36 will probably be the last DN episode to stun me with plot twists; I already know what will happen in the final episode, thanks in no small part to...

- DN Movie 2: The Last Name
- Kuro-Hana's IRC channel

Please, let episode 36 blow me away. :D

Not really.

After L's death, the manga does take a turn for the worst. Its hard to explain to someone who hasn't experienced this part of the story in the manga. Its one of those 'experience for yourself" things.

I shall admit though, Madhouse have done one hell of a job with the second arc. i'm finding myself enjoying it a lot more then i did the manga --- though thats thanks to music, wacky colors & awesome direction.

I've read up to chapter 74. There are lots of fairly boring chapters in there, the worst offenders being the Shidoh stuff and President arc, but I still enjoyed reading 56/7-74. Gonna read up to wherever the anime is right now tomorrow. :)

In my opinion, Manga will always going to be more boring than anime (when executed correctly), black and white pages can't beat animation, colour and sound. Never will understand people who prefer manga over anime!

It is not the first time she has written on the Deathnote and killed criminals although i agree that the effect of seeing the effect up close does have an adverse effect on her mind.

I also agree about the part about Light acting cold. I think the animators have done a great job fleshing out (no pun intended) Takada's role and character. I liked the dinner scene of her and Misa (an earlier episode) where Misa said that she'll be executed if Kira is arrested. She was visibly affected by that at first but started smiling when she thought of Light's promise to her ("you'll be the goddess of this new world"). This little reaction highlighted Takada's inner-struggle and sacrifice for the ideals of the man she loves. classic!

This is opposed to her being merely mildly annoyed in the manga.

You know, i thought about the exact same thing. Light gets away with a lot of things, just like how convenient it is that Raye Penbar just happened to own and bring along a laptop which can actually access information about his colleagues.

I hated how easily Mello died. I kind of expected him to die sooner or later, but i was hoping he would go out with a much bigger bang. I expected him to pull something much crazier than the takada kidnapping plan. He just didnt get enough time to truly impress the audience, and truly show us why he was one of the two to be chosen as L's successor. I dont know. I just expected more from him :(

To be honest, I was also highly disappointed with Mello's death as well. I expected* him to have some involvement in the finale with Near and Light, so seeing him killed off so easily and quickly seemed a bit cheap to me.

When Takada calls Light from the truck there are glass shards and some heavy looking tool on the floor, so she must've broken out to fetch the cellphone. Light figures that if she's free then starting a fire wouldn't be a problem either. Still, it does seem quite plotholish.

My main complaint with Mello's death is how stupid he was to let it happen. I mean, he must have realized that Takada could have a note, and that his name was out there even if she didn't have the shinigami eyes. So for him to needlessly show her his face and then go soft and assume she wouldn't have a note page in her bra seemed like a cop-out to get him killed. It's just too sloppy for Mello.

Bear in mind that neither L, Near or Mello realized that segments of the DN pages could be torn out and still be effective, for they've only seen the DN being used in its original untorn form (the torn pages have all been meticulously hidden from their knowledge by Light). For L and Mello, their failure to consider this vital clue cost them their lives. Now only Near remains.

Yeah, L's biggest mistake was not driving home his theories with the investigation team before he died. If he had just said "Guys, I think I'm pretty screwed, so here's what I think" they probably could have busted Light - in the end they didn't even realize that L was almost positive that Light was Kira and Misa was doing judgements. I thought it was sort of dumb that they didn't at least go ahead with the plan to test the 13 Day rule.

L was very into his friendship with Light, if you didn't notice. He really didn't WANT to think Light is Kira, which is why he fell for such traps and let his guard slip. That's what makes L so great and Near so crappy. L is human and you love him 'cuz he's so human even though he's alll perfect and smart. That was his downfall yes, but that made his character. To me Near and Light are not much different from each other, just stone cold zombies. L was the one with the heart.

No, I think it was pretty obvious by the end that L knew Light was Kira. He just couldn't do anything about it without being able to prove it. He was confident that disproving the 13 Day rule would close the case because he knew that Light and Misa were guilty. The investigation team just kept doubting him and getting in his way. Certainly he was sad about it though, realizing that his only friend was just trying to kill him.

L never saw Light as a friend, it was all an act. I know they tried to play up their "friendship" in the anime but that's just BS.

People, only two episodes left. Two episode left before the awaited conclusion, and tomorrow the penultimate episode airs bringing forth the climax.

Will Near have the last laugh or will Light's dream of Kira's Kingdom on Earth come true?

We won't know until tomorrow and next week.

What a strange ride this second part to Death Note has been. Honestly, I think that the second part substantially lacks the charm and vibe from the first arc. I say this because the first part we stood as witnesses to two titans of intellectual proportions on a game of wits to find out about each other's identities in order to finish one or the other.
For the second part I feel there are too much parties involved, making the scope diversified upon all the general cast and not focusing more upon a true network of rivalry between Near, Mello, and Light as it had been between Light and L.

When I saw that Mello had already stuffed himself with chocolate and stop chewing it, then instantly I knew it a bad omen was casted upon him, and the end result was that Takada outsmarted him in order to kill him.

I really cannot say that Mello's loss affected me, because he did not make any real contribution, aside from kidnapping Yu in order to earn the note and learnt about the fake rules. Other than that he stepped behind-the-scenes bidding his plans and reuniting trusted allies to make his last-ditch move.

Who I am moved about her death was Takada. She geniunely held love for Light and in blind faith did everything what he charmingly ordered her to. Unfortunately, she drank the cup of poison and long without being awared fell into the snakes' fangs. She was nothing else to Light, but an obedient, and even stable pawn at that, to move his plans.
Once her position had been jeopardized, Ligh resorted to the last source once Mello was taken down and that was to eliminate her.

Light has indeed ascended to the throne of the villains.

To be fair to L, he did suspect that one could use the DN by its torn out page and was about to test the 13 day rule. He was out-manouvered by Light who had a distinct advantage of working on the inside. In the end, I think L knows that he was right all along.
Near did not had such a disadvantage and is now out-smarting Light.

He spelled (?) it and Light heard it because his father was connected with the HQ by a radio set.
