I had a bizarre dream about it last night, mainly about Light and Near fighting on flying glass. You know you love something when you start having random (and crazy) dreams about it.
I don't want it to end, we most likely aren't going to be seeing anything on the same level for a loooong time. These last 40 or so minutes are going to fly past real fast. :(

Just in advance, please don't post spoilers without tags until you-know-who release the sub. :) The you-probably-don't-know-who sub quality is only good if you're desperate enough to throw away quality in order to watch it.
This episode must be very special to have received this reaction already. It almost makes me not want to see it, I'll be bloody depressed for the rest of the year if the last two episodes turn out to be that good! :P
FMA is the only anime coming to my mind that made me feel like this towards the end. There's certainly something completing an anime you've been following for many months gives you, something watching and finishing a series in one week doesn't give you.
Voted 9 so the last episode would have a 10 :D. But ep36 was perfect.
Death note is perfect, i'm so sad, just 1 to go ;_;

Holy shit! Amazing episode! One of the top 5 episodes for sure.
Suspense was through the roof, new music was fantastic too. Light's delivery and VAing in this episode were so awesome. Just the was trying so hard to contain his laughter and how his tone matched his "Just as planned" from episode...28 was it? Whoever cast Miyano as Light is a genius, he owned this role from start to finish.
37 can't come here soon enough.

I would have been laughing in epicness if it were not that I was streaming this choppily (bad viewing experience). I could hear a new background track around the middle that I must get a better version of this episode to listen to.
9/10, simply because the last episode is going to be either a 1 or 10.
So... how does Light's JUST AS PLANNED lead to s******g l*****s?? (NO DON'T ANSWER I WAS THINKING TO MYSELF)
It doesn't look like things worked out as planned. In the preview it shows him having to use the piece of paper in his watch. He wouldn't need that if everyone died....unless he's using it to kill Mikami or Misa.
Awesome episode and I cant wait for the end.

Besides the last episode, it was getting a little stale for me, this episode was complete glory.

Best episode ever!!! It had myself shaking and laughing like a psycho. So isnane, I love it.
What a hell of a cliffhanger!!! I was more and more nervous as the episode advanced, at the last moments I could feel my heart pounding hard! One more week untin we know how it ends! I can't hardly wait!

Light's VA did a fucking awesome job.
Near and the others won't die, the cliffhanger ending made me certain of this. Mikami must've messed up somewhere.
Next episode is going to be bloody brilliant.

After 5 years, still nobody knows about the watch's secret. A trick is left for each side.
You can't compare this to the manga; colours, music, exceptional animation and (very important) voice acting turn this episode into a masterpiece. I know the ending and I still can't wait for next week.

I must also agree about the voice actor. It was the perfect tone and pitch for Light and he has performed brilliantly throughout the show.
Over the job & done perfectly --- Madhouse need to receive an award for this episode.
Since the start we've seen the crazy amount of colors and fast motion being used plenty of times. They work perfectly & Madhouse used that to there advantage for this episode, and i'm sure the last one as well.
How i LOVED Mikami's scene, i loved all of it.

Pretty much why i've been enjoying the anime more then the manga. I just look at both differently.

Light is now my favorite character ever.
what epic'ness !!!! seriously the best manga to anime translation EVER!!! my only complaints: that 39 secs seems a little too long and the preview revealed too much. They should just cut the preview completely.
P.S Mikami really outdid himself. Can anyone be anymore whacked than Mikami in this episode?!???

I loved how Light's VA sounded when he was trying to hold back his laughter. He (Light's VA) seriously deserves some kind of award for his performance.
Never thought I'd find myself wanting Light to win by the end of the series. No Light means no Death Note, no Death Note means no orgasmic anime, no orgasmic anime means much depression. :p
They made it pretty damn obvious what the result of the cliffhanger will be by showing everyone alive in the preview.
Light leaning against the wall and telling everyone who he really is makes me believe the series is going to end near identical to how the 2nd movie did, excluding the huge twist the movie had for L fans to go crazy over.

I think Light's VA (Miyano Mamoru- I LOVE THIS GUY for his Ouran High School Tamaki act, but this Light role was INGENIOUS...) DID get a nomination for best new male VA star or something for his role as Light. I don't think he won though.
I know some DN fans don't like to associate Mamo-chan's role in Ouran, but it just shows how damn talented he is... And it doesn't hurt that he's a cute little spaz with a fresh face. ^^
This is the FIRST anime in which I enjoyed the anime more than the manga... They cut out the long dragging parts and made writing COOL. :heh:

What an amazing episode!!! Light looks like he got this battle won but he was pretty careless with planning in this arc with Mello and Near. Did he plan everything flawlessly and where the hell did Ryuk go? Damn, only one episode left:(:(:(

Guys, just one week left and it's all over. Can I ask to keep all of your manga knowledge out of this thread ?
We're at a key point, and I had to delete a couple of serious hinting. Everything from the manga in such a delicate moment of the anime, as the ending of episode 36 represents, is at risk to become a huge spoiler for anime only watchers. Imagine how it would suck to discover the ending just a week before its natural outcome.

As for the episode, yes it was wonderful. I kind of expected something at the level of episode 25, and though that one remains the peak, this was still amazing.
I just can't believe how they've rendered Mikami, just spectacular. So as Light. And what an atmosphere, 21 minutes flying as they were 21 seconds.
It was peculiar, in a way, to see Teru writing down the names at about minute 15 of the episode, and as of minute 21, just 30 seconds were passed. Talk about building the tension :heh:

Well anyway, couldn't help but laugh at the part where...
Light goes, "No... No... I mustn't laugh. Just another 40 seconds until everyone dies. 35 seconds... Just another 35 seconds and I can declare myself!"
Direction's been exceptional and so has the voice acting. You can really sense how the characters are feeling.
The "frozen" 4 minutes of time, Mikami's eyes rolling round like the madman he is and then the sound of the door sliding open. Brilliant.
They cut out the long dragging parts and made writing COOL. :heh:
You know, they can just about make anything cool with Anime. Insect fighting, Go, yo yos etc :heh:

For God's sake, this episode almost kill me with the tension and the cliffhanger, I was yelling NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Just a whole week to see it!!! Jeez I'm gonna miss this series, life wont be the same without my beloved Light-kun!!!

That episode was just... HOLY ****!!!! AMAZING!!! Orgasmic 10/10. It had me saying "holy s***" irl. Thank God I didn't read the manga or it would have taken away from the experience. That scene where Mikami was writing the names in was like OMG O_O
It is gonna be a really long week for the last episode. Light has already declared himself the winner so I'm gonna guess N has one last trick and will end up on top.
Obviously they don't die, because we see Near holding up the note for all to see, and Mikami freaking out. Apparently he screwed up and Light has already outed himself, though he still sounds and looks awfully confident. I don't know what went wrong though, unless Near found the real note too.

Just a fore note; I don't think any of this needs a spoiler tag because I'm only discussing and speculating based on what was given in this episode (including the preview). If you don't want to hear about the preview, skip this post now.
My only complaint about this is how obvious they're making the outcome seem. The second to last episode, and they have set it up to seem like Light has won no matter what. The fact that the cliffhanger is at a part where Light declares his victory, would mean that something obviously happens right after that which is bigger than Light winning (aka him losing); if that's not the case, then whoever is doing the anime needs to learn what a cliffhanger is about. Having everyone die in the first five minutes of the next episode, and then having Light do a victory dance for 15 minutes obviously wouldn't work. The entire thing screams that Light is going to lose. I swear to the Gods, every scene in the preview is pointing at Light losing. I mean, lets go over them:
Near holding up what is assumeably the list of names Mikami was writing.
A gun being fired.
Mikami with what looks to be a worried/shocked look on his face.
Light being forced to use the piece of the Death Note he keeps in his watch.
The Near and Mello dolls being shown together like they were (which would suggest that Mello did something important).
Mikami in custody (being held by some guy).
Light being up against the wall all alone; with everyone staring at him from a distance (previous preview scene) while admitting he is Kira.
My only hope is that this episode and the preview is them setting it up to make people believe that it's too obvious for Light to win, and then have him win. If he ends up losing, I'm going to be extremely disappointed in the way this has been handled.
This reminds me of those stupid reality TV shows which try to make you think one person is being voted out, when it's clearly someone else.

I agree with the above, the placement of the ending and preview gave away just about everything.
- Everyone being alive.
- Near showing what looks like a piece of the Death Note.
- Light using his watch in desperation/anger.
- Mikami falling to the floor.
- Light leaning against the wall and revealing his true identity.
However, there is still one huge twist (which had spoiled for me way before L's death) to go, something many of you won't be able to guess. Just make sure you stay away from the 2nd movie (and forums...) until 37 gets subbed!
There's a simple solution to this: don't watch the preview. :P

At one point when Mikami was freaking out he looked like Alucard from Hellsing, same eyes, teeth, hair, all of it.

i was beginning to think i was the only one that loved the ending... i thought it was perfect. but to each his own.

~ Its so random, but I noticed there was a plane-noise right after Light does the biggest smirk and says like 3 times "just as planned!" when Near explains why they wont die (about switching the page). Its similar to the plane-noise when/just as Light got his memories back (another 'just as planned' situation). Um... yeah, its just a random note that's all ^_^ I can't remember hearing that noise other than those two times.
Near was smart to think of switching pages, knowing Mikami would arrive – but was he smart enough to think of it being fake? And how…? But I hope he does have a back up plan. I dont want everyone to die!
~ Love Near's smirk when he took off his mask.
~ Light - is it just me or is this episode the most he's ever smiled in lol.
~ Did anyone else think Matsuda was having a heart attack when Mikami began writing down the names? As he screamed it looked like he reached for his heart. I was like "nooo not Matsuda!" But lol, he was only panicking and reaching for his gun. (I'm sure the animators did that on purpose - they've done that before.)
~ Mikami was hilarious – his ‘eliminate’ technique makes Light’s pen writing look boring (you know the early episodes).
~ And yeah... where is Ryuk? I keep forgetting about him now O_O
One more episode I can't wait to see what happens but then when its all over - what are we gonna do?!? I dont think there are many shows like Death Note out there *cries*
Oh well, as someone said better to finish good then continue and get bad.
But then we can look forward to getting the boxset and movies – yayness! It'll be fun watching it again.

I just wouldn't like to read unrelated comments or speculations on facts and events we didn't get to see in the actual episode 36, or in the preview for 37.

OMFG. BEST EPISODE EVER.
Never has an episode of any anime made me feel as this one just did. My heart was beating with excitement when Mikami started the whole Eliminate thing. Its been like 20 mins since i finished watching and i'm still all excited. I think this episode made Death Note my No.1 Anime of all time.
Perfect episode if i ever saw one.
Can't wait for the ending. :D

It would be nice to warn people the huge possibility of getting spoiled :D. Well denial is a good thing sometimes. When i was told L is going to die, i went in denial and didnt accept it so it didnt reduce my enjoyment of the show :heh:.
This episode was really good but i didnt think it was one of the best episodes ever made.
P.S. About making a Thread to warn people of spoiler hints in this thread, i was semi-joking :) .
P.S.2. Also was i hinting the ending myself :)?. I didnt notice at all. I think most of the people who read the manga ,unconsciously hinting the ending. Not really on purpose.

This episode will go down as one of the best anime eps in 2007 in my list,along with the upcoming stage 24 and 25 of code geass and maybe some eps from the upcoming higurashi kai.
Ep37 is going to be a make or break episode.

I cant agree more. Another ending would be so nice. There are many reasons i didnt like ending. Not only just because who won and who lost . Many more reasons why the ending sucked.

Preview Death Note 37 : Why Light would tell to Near that he is Kira? I think that he said it before everyone die (like Misora Naomi, Raye Penber).
Death Note since the start has been a 100% adaptation of the manga with added scenes here and there. Changing the ending would be pointless & a stupid move.

I don't know about you, but i'm surprised he was able to contain himself for even that long! How could he possibly miss the chance to let all his allies know that everything they did in the Kira group was for naught? Let Near and the SPK know that they were utterly defeated? To Light, victory was assured and there was nothing Near or anyone could do to stop him!

I'm tempted to not watch it as well. I'm happy with the series ending as Light declares victory, as compared to the most likely ending we're going to receive next week.

or he could have went with nears plan and tell mikami his real name and write it in the note and it doesnt work(cuz it the page was replaced. It will prove him 99% that his not kira.Mikami gets killed and dies happily cuz he saw GOD xd

Yeah, that was really stupid on Light's part. It's obvious that the Death Note is not the real one, otherwise they could have just ended the series here with some minor adjustments. The preview even shows the people are still alive. Light has gotten away with a LOT of carelessness over the course of the series, but if he loses, he would deserve it for his lack of awareness.

the ep was somewhat exciting, naturally, but im really glad the series is over, the last few episodes have been extremly dull and thie whole mess is barely held together by anything... the plot is a mess, the characters are an even rgeater mess, everything is inconsistent und full of problematic plotholes.

If light loses to N im gonna be pissed. All signs point to him losing, but if he loses to anyone it should have been L. Near is a crappy character and so is Mello. Im sure there are plenty more Light fans out there than N fans.

I have to agree with what some others have said in that they are not going to watch episode 37. If I can keep myself away I am going to have to do the same, I have not read the manga but I feel fairly secure in my idea of who is going to win the face off. And I do not like my predicted outcome.
I would be interested in a ending involving all of those involved dying, because I really feel Light is not going to win due to how much it showed of him being victorious. I would at least like to see the rest of them go down too, I feel that if L could not defeat Light then N would not be able to either.
Mikami is the perfect representation of awesomeness, I was crying laughing at that scene.. especially the part where Near is telling everyone to calm down and you can hear him in the background saying eliminate.
I hate the series is coming to an end, really hope there's another A-class anime at there after this.

I wonder why Light did not make Mikami write one page ahead, he should have seen this coming by Near's frequent date checking..... screw this shit I'm not watching ep 37. Light sure has made some mistakes, but come on, this one was really stupid!
Don't worry, even if the episode does go in the direction the preview hints it will, I have a feeling you will still enjoy 37. ;)

Death Note since the start has been a 100% adaptation of the manga with added scenes here and there. Changing the ending would be pointless & a stupid move.

I hope that we get to learn L's real name in the next episode...
I thought this episode was amazing, though Mikami's weird grin when Light tells him to come in made me laugh, and Light's face when Near asked why Mikami was so polite made me laugh as well xD
Sadly the ending was more or less spoilt for me by someone ages ago (well...I know what happens with one of the characters), but still can't wait til 37.

A confession makes no difference now either way; the proof is already in the note, and even before that everybody is certain he's Kira except Matsuda and maybe Ide.
Maybe so, but telling on urself isn't going to help either. Besides he could always spin the whole "I've been taken over by Kira again!" pitch that he used before when L was certian he was Kira, and look where that got him...sitting in L's nice leather chair taking over his name as his successor.
Nothing is Impossible for Light!!!...remember that...

Based on ep37 preview, it doesn't surprise me Light was foolish enough to presume Near wouldn't think about the notebook being a fake. Back when it was Light vs. L, Light made some careless mistakes in his arrogance. But in either case, I hope it doesn't end like the 2nd movie or the manga. From the very beginning, the Light shown in the anime realizes that he can't trust anyone, including a certain someone. Ending it like in the manga and in the 2nd movie would be a contradiction of this version of Light as we've come to know him.

I can't believe this roller-coaster comes to an end next week...Gonna miss my DN fix sooooo bad T_T...This episode was so good...Can't even believe how much I'm cheering for Light...Piece of me wants him bested but the other part of me just wants him the reign supreme...This episode he was just too much, I was so with him...The atmosphere of this episode was so thick I could hardly take it; hardly breath when Mikami opened that door...Near sporting the L mask as Kira entered was dripping with expressionism, and his subsequent smile after revealing his face had me in goose-bumps....I had prepared for the death of comic-relief Matsuda and the rest, and I would have been a bit emotional for that, but I thought it was gonna happen...If there's one flaw from this episode it's that I didn't get to hear Ryuk's chuckle in the background as Near and Kira faced-off...Somehow he just needed to be there (He MUST be there next week)...but I still gave this ep a "perfect" because it just had my soul burning with delight...
I have no intentions of reading anyone else post in this thread for fear of the "Spoil-monster" so I won't be mad if you don't read my post aswell^^...

Seriously I hope that Matsuda dies in the next episode. For me its just an useless character through the whole series. The only thing he did was getting Misa into Yotsuba and that would have been possible with Mogi in a similar way too. He had some action when they took out the Mafia but replace him with any other police man and nothing changes. Other than that he was just annoying and useless, especially in ep36 :\
Ide also had very VERY few things to do, even less than Matsuda. But at least he wasnt annoying. Driving the car to Sakura TV and being close to Aizawa. Aside from some random "AAAHH Im so surprised" and similar appearances I cant remember him doing anything at all.
I view Matsuda as a form of comic relief.. much like Ryuk. This is always nice to have in an anime series. I hope to see more of Ryuk in the last episode ... he has been very much MIA in the lst few episodes.

Its hard to find any love for Matsuda - I think he's cool.
And yeah, I agree with mycen - he's like a comic relief character, but at the start was used as a newbie. He answered our questions about the death note world-setting like "who is L?"
During the first arc of Death Note my friend referred to the Task Force as the nobodies - just cause to her they never did anything except be shocked or surprised. I swear though Mogi had the smallest amount of dialogue (a few sentences) through that arc.
~ Well hahah, at least Matsuda and Aizawa had their 'thinking colours' - (Mat) yellow and (Aiz) green, usually it was only the main characters ^_^

I believe it was the preview in episode 34. They has a screenshot which looked like Mikami was falling down (which implied death) but turned out to be his totally insane eliminate dance.

The penultimate episode was magnificient. Stylized, noir-like animation. Light return to his grandeur evilness from episode one.
Ladies and gentlemen the countdown starts down for the ultimate closure to Death Note. Tomorrow everything will be settled...
Is Light going to reign as the God of the New World? or will Near demonstrate that he has already surpassed L by bringing down Kira?
The adrenaline rush and the wait made me highly anxious.
The wait at the warehouse was without a doubt the most poignant and dreaded silence sequence of this decade.
The symbolism used was how the camera focused on the blades of the fan, as they looked like were spinning on the same motion to the hand's of Light's wristwatch.
Mikami lost his sanity in exchange to become his God's agent.
The animation made the white flashes, black undertones, and the red hues of the eyes totally creepy and macabre.
But why is that Light became too overconfident even to reach the bursting point on snapping and laughing like a nutcase once he developed the counter to Near's sabotage with the notebook pages?
There must be more to Near than wha Light would meet him with eyes. He's after all L's heir, and I do not think that Mello just died out for nothing.
There must something else which warrants that Near would have the true, last laugh.
The importance of the thirty-minutes wait prior to the last confrontation, played a purpose. It finally revealed to Near with his very own eyes the solid proof that Light is Kira at 100%
Why is it?
Recall the manipulation rule which grants a 23-days period: Near ordered Giovanni to touch the note while Mikami was away on the 5th. He wanted to test that rule for two things:
1) To realize that Mikami's copy of the note was indeed the fake one, as Near I believe suspected.
Why is that, you may ask? Recall on the episode where Giovanni followed Mikami to the train. Mikami supposedly passed judgement on the molester that was harrassing the girl. The first thing that Giovanni saw what Mikami was doing, which he reported to Near, was taking a picture of the molester with his cell phone, then writing his name later.
Someone of Near's caliber should had realized right away that Mikami was using a fake copy of the note. On that time, Light instructed to Mikami to send some pages of the real note to Takada in order to have her pass judgement.
2) Near arranged that wait to follow on L's manner of doing things. L could not prove Light's innocence to be Kira, unless he had scored the 100% of proof.
Near did so, because Giovanni did not die at the moment, which I believed was the deadline for the 23-days rule that says a person will die once touches the note; obviously a fake one made by Light.
This in turn disprove the 13-days fake rule.
Did you see Near's creepy expression of joyous gloominess once he takes off the L's mask after the 30-minutes passed?
This is because he proved at last L's suspicion rate to 100% that Light was always Kira.

really poundering if I should watch the next episode. Cause like a lot of people I was to anxious to know the conclusion.
It's a shame that this series is comming to an end. It's one of my favourite all tho I find the ending to have a way to big of an anti-climax.. But that's like with 50%+ of animes anyway.
I'm gonna miss this series, Light defenitely became one of my favourite chars ever or at least one of the chars I was most fascinated bye ( can't compare Luffy with Light I guess :p)

I agree. A show like Death Note would be extremely slow and boring without some comic relief. Matsuda is necessary. Without something to break up the monotony, I'd probably have given up on the manga during the Yotsuba arc.

I really wasn't satisfied with the ending, for several reasons. One being that Mikami wrote Takada's name, and Effed it all up for Light, another being that Near is just some asshole, And that Mikami should have made sure it wasn't a fake, also, he flippin' called Light "God" that's way to obvious. Another thing that pissed me off is that there's only 37 episodes.. And even after his death, woudln't it be possible for Light to be a Death God/Shinigami? Ryuk said it himself, he would be a better Shinigami, and when Light dies from Ryuk, he neither goes to Heaven or Hell.. They should have made another episode in which he's a Death God.. not much of an episode, but more like the ending for episode 37, rather than him dying. Last thing.. in the end Light did stop criminals, and since he, himself l was a criminal, he died. It was his faith, he just didn't think of himself that way. But in a way he kind of does "Eliminate" all criminals.
