Hmm...
- New Year's Festival + visiting the Shinto temple
- I have a feeling that Tsukasa would somehow screw up the ceremony.
- Kona's obligatory cosplay comment on the twins' miko makeup.
- New Year's eve cleaning. Konata does a lot of it while Kagami does nothing. Konata's dad becomes fixated to a certain shelf...I guess it could be where he put Kanata's funerary urn.
- Kagami rests on Kona's head. Careful you tsundere...you'll squash the little one.
In the manga, Sochirou draws "Good luck" while Kona draws "Horrible luck".
- There are no more good ending songs after Doraemon no Uta. That is all.

Hummmm.....
First, I am VERY happy that Animate Tencho and his crew reappear this episode. What can I say; I want their manga series animated!
Second, we have a very interesting Lucky Channel... It was not what I was expecting.:heh:
What's with that obasan voice for all the background characters? Old, young, male, or female .. it's the same voice >_<.

I'm watching this on nicovideo right now. I wonder how Kaoishin will react to the comiket scene, given that
Product placement is totally hyped up here, but its to be expected. given that it's Comiket. Lots of Haruhi posters (and a Haruhi cosplayer), a car has a picture of Primula, and there's a Kanon pic to be spotted.
I just heard Sugita Tomokazu, but he sounds here like Mayama more than Kyon. I want that Kyon card he's holding. And someone do their research, is the guy he's fighting also the seiyuu of Sosuke? I haven't watched FMP so I wouldn't know

Okay I'll do this in highs and lows style, just covering the Comiket sequence.
Highs:
-The Otaku being portrayed accurately as cosplayer wannabes and disturbing nerdy, fat and sweaty fanboys
-Konata being in her element and all the other girls being either creeped out or in Tsukasa's case outright terrified and lost.
-Seki Tomakazu taking Sugita Tomakazu to school in a hot blooded screaming contest as well as punching him in the face and subsequently into a wall (Instant 10/10! Yeah I said it, but I have been waiting to see this guy get his faced punched in for so long, and now it's Domon Freaking Kashuu doing it).
Lows:
-Every single person seems to have the exact same voice that sounds like Freeza from Dragon Ball Z and its really unnerving and unnatural
-Every single product shown is from Kadokawa Shoten, which at a con as large as Comiket is far to unlikely to be a coincidence.
And that is all.

hahahaha!! kagami? she will most probably go into "dere dere TABO!" mode :heh:
I'm watching this on nicovideo right now. I wonder how Kaoishin will react to the comiket scene, given that
tip...dont provoke him O_o
Just watched it. Great episode, even without subs.
Kagami's "curiosity"
Great episode, especially dealing with the Comike part. Well what do you expect, the episode was written by Gatoh Shoji (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shouji_Gatou) again wwwwww
Some parts I noticed:
Konata's dad saying the first three syllables to "Pikka pikka no ichinensei" (A Japanese commercial referring to how kids entering elementary school are an important step in their school life) as he was cleaning.
The Rinkai Line (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rinkai_Line) to Ariake Tokyo Big Sight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_Big_Sight)
Ouch-cars (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=1006553&postcount=54) wwww
The 500mL PET bottle drink that Konata gives to Tsukasa and Kagami during the pre-Comike briefing is Koiwai Milk & Coffee
Wallet size, just like Comike, perfect enough for stacks of 500 yen coins and 1000 yen bills, which is average price of each book.
The doujinshi that Kagami bought for Konata: "Nurunuru Danchou-san" (Wet * Wild Dancho [Haruhi]) and "Ikenai Kanchou-san" (The bad, bad Captain [Tessa]) wwww
Tsukasa being lost and her mobile phone being useless because of the mobile phone repeater stations in that area are over-loaded. So true, so true. This is one of the first mistakes a beginner makes at Comike. In Comike, mobile phones are useless. If you want to communicate, get a handheld tranceiver (not one of those cheapo FRS/GMRS walkie-talkies, but those prosumer ones made for DXers by ICOM (http://www.icomamerica.com/) and Yaesu (http://www.yaesu.com/))
Konata talking about Harumi (the previous location for Comike...over 12 years ago).
The hotel for the Harumi Comike, Hotel Urashima www That hotel is also known to be haunted in some rooms. Very small, very expensive, and very hard to reserve due to Comike.
Kogami Akira indeed makes an appearance...but in the most unfortunate way wwww
Chihara Minori (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chihara_Minori) wwww
The otaku who's getting pissed off that Nagato's trading card is all sold out looks exactly like Gatoh Shoji wwwwww
If you look very closely at the background characters at Comike, you can find the Miyakawa sisters, Hiyorin, and even Soujirou. You have to be extra attentive as they are only there for a split second and it's kinda like "Where's Wally?"
Anime Tencho vs Animate worker Sugita www Sugita's impersonation of Amuro from Gundam (ku..nanika, bukiga nai noka?) is really good!!!
ED Theme: "Makenaide" by ZARD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZARD). Perhaps it's Kyo-Ani's way of paying tribute to a great singer whose death came upon too young, too soon? May she rest in peace.
BTW, this song is very beautiful, and uplifting. I know at least two people in my life who decided to not commit suicide at the last moment as they remember this song (never give up, just a little more, c'mon lets run until the end). It's very sad that her life was cut so short with such a tragic accident...
http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/4308/1182698442826is6.jpg
Now you know what Gauron means when he says "Aishiteruzeee Kasim" (I love you Kasim!!)
Kagami was so moe~ when she picked up that doujinshi. Her first step into the world of BL wwww
What's with that obasan voice for all the background characters? Old, young, male, or female .. it's the same voice >_<.
They are all voiced by Kujira (American anime fans would understand as "the voice of Orochimaru in NARUTO"). Why? Because it's cheaper to have one veteran voice actor/actress do all the background characters than hiring a different person each and everytime. The other voice actor who does background male character is Tachiki Fumihiko.
And someone do their research, is the guy he's fighting also the seiyuu of Sosuke? I haven't watched FMP so I wouldn't know
Yes, it's Seki Tomokazu. The running gag is that:
Animate worker Sugita (voiced by Sugita Tomokazu)
is holding up a trading card of Kyon (also voiced by Sugita Tomokazu)
decrying how trading cards of Nagato (a character of Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu) and even Koizumi (another character of Haruhi) are selling more than his
while Anime Tencho (voiced by Seki Tomokazu)
is holding a trading card of Sagara Sousuke (also voiced by Seki Tomokazu)
decrying how Sousuke's trading cards has a huge inventory for the past three years while Taisa-dono's (Tessa from FMP) sold out on the initial run
Actually, if you go to Lucky Star's website (http://www.lucky-ch.com/) you actually see an ad saying that "just as Anime Tencho and Animate worker Sugita said, we have plenty of inventory on these two telephone cards! Please buy!!" wwww
Why do ya'll waste posts wondering what Kaoishin will think? That's far more annoying than just waiting til he posts his thoughts on the episode. Maybe I should start counting the "what will Kao- say?" posts and tally the "Kao-fanboy" results? :)
Kona, as a fangrrl, has been buzzing for her favorite convention all summer. Of *course* she's going to go.
Ah man, this has to be the best episode in a while. I mean the previous few episodes weren't bad, but this one sure is one of the better episodes.

Actually this Episode proves that Konata is a strange breed of female anime fan in herself.
Notce that she never gets BL. That proves that she is not a 腐女子. But prefer to go for the normal male oriented doujins.

Oh, I loved this episode.
High points:
-Nice depiction of Comike. It was hilarious when Konata began preparations (I hear it was music from Doom?).
-BL Kagami was great.
-Tomokazu vs Tomokazu was possibly one of the best ideas that spewed out of this show. Cheers to that!
-The episode kind of slowed down after the first half, and the jokes got a bit low. But it was plenty of good moments, anyways.
-Did anyone notice the 10-15 second budget-saving scene when Konata & dad are watching TV?
As far as I can tell from the Random Curiosity screen caps, this is an anime-only episode, though many of the individual gags *may* come from the manga (vol1-4). I'll have to wait for the subs to verify that (since I'm not watching raws on this puppy).
So far comments sound like its not a "product placement overloading the plot" but just a lot of background bits for people to play "Where's Waldo" with. I'll wait to see the execution before commenting further, though the Akira gag connecting L*C to the show appears hilarious.
Poor Kagami appears to have jumped into the deep end of the pool. Tsukasa, otoh, appears to be worried but not quite sure why :)

And another thing....
Is Konata and Kagami even allow to make their purchases ? Don't they have rules aganist such a thing at Comike ?
And it's nice that they paid tribute to ZARD with 2 of her songs in the ED for this EP..
Maybe there are rules, but who cares to check their identification in that crowd. Also most of those doujinsh are againt copyrights law (most copyrights holder choose to ignore them though), so those who sell doujinshi wouldn't even mind if some highschool girls buy their stuff.

Hey, I think you guys need to spoiler your posts. This episode just NEEDS to be watched unspoiled.OMG, Kagami + BL doujin FTW. The best moment in Lucky*Star since Kagami+SOS Danchou present:D
I was expecting new years and Kagami-miko, but Comike was an awesome surprise. As for how Comike was depicted, I can totally relate t....I'm not an otaku, I'm not an otaku, I'm not.... I also used to live near where the Korean Comike (Comic World) used to open, and the adults used to complain about the "weird people"(the subway station becomes overflowed with cosplayers:heh:)
Tomokazu vs Tomokazu was also awesome.
Is Konata and Kagami even allow to make their purchases ? Don't they have rules aganist such a thing at Comike ?
Not sure about Comike (only been to the Korean equivalent), but some of the booths are manned by high school kids, who are probably also the authors, so.......
Funny episode, although as mentioned before, the first half was a lot better than the second. I was kind of miffed a few weeks ago when they didn't show the Summer Comiket (which Kona said she would go to in the summer), but they made up for it by showing the winter one. There were so many KyoAni referrences in the background. I was also surprised to see the Anime Tenchou sequence again.

After rewatching the episode (yeah, I don't feel like working:heh:), I really like this episode's Karaoke session. Seems really natural, with everyone (is it everyone?) joining in. Konata jumping in too early is also something that's commonly seen. I wonder if that was Hirano Aya's actual mistake, since the laughs from the others seem so natural. (wooo... has a sudden urge to go back to Seoul:-( )
And it's nice that they paid tribute to ZARD with 2 of her songs in the ED for this EP..
Haven't watch it yet, but I love this. I was so sad when ZARD's lead singer Sakai Izumi died last month. I almost came to tears. They had a few anime-related hits too. ZARD is one of my all time favorite bands... what a terrible way to go.
Anyone know which 2 songs?
As for Comike rules, there are no age restriction to enter Comike as it's not an adult-only event. Not all doujin are 18-kin, mind you. It's up to the seller of the material to make the age rule stick, but really, most circles will sell to anyone not looking children. No one checks ID. And what really happens is that everyone really ignore these age restriction rules anyway - I mean, the age of consent is 13 in Japan. You mean you can have sex at 13 but can't read adult material until 18? Most people are not up tight about sex (not like Americans) so if a boy reads porn it's totally okay as long as it's in private. Same with girls, as long as you don't talk about it in public. So basically anyone who's old enough to want to go Comiket get to buy anything they want.
Have you guys ever joined in a real conversation with a bunch of Japanese friends? Man the topic goes down hill really fast. All I can say is that in front of close friends, Japanese man and woman talks about sex openly and candidly. And then once everyone is drunk crying and accidental nudity will ensue. Ah good times.

When Konata and Kagami are talking about kagamimochi, and Konata spreads her arms wide and says, "Kon~na no!", is anyone else reminded of Tonari no Totoro where Mei is talking about the Totoros she meets? Aya-sama's voice is so cute there! This episode was really awesome, but that was my favorite part. (^ω^)

1 is the incredible 負けないで, but I have no idea what the other ZARD song is. I feel so nostagic. I was introduced to ZARD songs during highschool by my highschool buddies. Another ending is 行け!ゴッドマン, an opening for a identically named tokusatsu.

"Ike! Godman" isn't a song by ZARD, that was sung by Mizuki Ichiro. Besides, how on earth could ZARD sing a theme to a tokusatsu that aired back in 1972, when their first single was released in 1991? Sakai Izumi would've been only 5 years old!! wwww

Just join in on any university circle nomikai or goukon and you have instant openness which most Americans would consider to be sexual harrassment. Well from my point of view, Americans are just too Puritanical when it comes down to sex. I mean seriously, the years I've spent on this board surprised me as my initial thought of Americans were to be much more open than we were. Boy, was I wrong.

Probably in the same way Aya Hirano was thought to be in SPT Layzner, which aired years before she was even born. A misunderstanding. Actually that error is still rife throughout the internet.

Yeah, "Go Godman!" was pretty bad. Glad I've never watched it as a child. I've posted my usual ED music post in the Music Video thread for those of you who had no idea how cool ZARD was. I was a HUGE ZARD fan. I even had her swimsuit photos in her pre-ZARD days.... :heh:

Yeah Americans are prudes. The board is nothing, wait until you actually spend time with them in a party. But there are another side... the college parties are pretty wild, but drunken teens are crazy everywhere. Nothing beats a Japanese party I must say.
You have to remember the first european settlers to New World were, to a fair degree, religious fanatics who'd been thrown out of Europe because they got tired of them or missionaries bent on "fixing" the people there. :) Granted a lot of other people showed up later, but "puritanical" means something for a reason.
Oh, there's a lot of ribald perverse crap here, but there's also a huge streak of "GUILT" that results in some bizarro behavior at the individual and societal level. The funny thing is that I can trip across the border to Canada and can just feel and see the difference in attitude (not that they don't have some looney tune rules on comic porn). Go to western Europe and then its light years of difference.

That's pretty much most of the western world. I relate it a lot with a heavy religious tradition (as Vexx said). Conservative views on sex often stem from archaic Jew-Christian views. It's sad, I know it, even more for people like me who don't follow any sort of religion...

To put it simply, the kings and queens in Europe back then may be authoritarian, but even they can't stand those religious fanatics. As a result, all those religious "purists" were subsequently forced out of Europe by these monarchs into the New World, where they can "preach freely without interference".
This of course leads to the ironic result of Western Europe actually being less conservative than North America two centuries later when those authoritarian monarchs were either overthrown by or forced to concede power to the "moderates" that chose to stay in the Old Europe. (Of course I'm over-simplifying stuff here, like how the coastal areas are less conservative than the so-called "Bible Belt", so please bear with me. )
Anyway, back on topic. Man, I gotta see this episode as soon as I get my hands on it. The amount of original material seen in the screenshots was already funny enough.
The way Kagami-sama became the latest convert to the yaoi movement is so moe!  Thus begins her hobby of secretly collecting FMP yaoi doujins. :D
And Seki Tomokazu + Sugita Tomokazu parodying their roles = pure win FTW.

Funny story about that actually, my mother was at a party once and there were these American Skydivers and the called my mother and father "Rowdy Canadians". While I admit they can be fairly active at parties, I just found that a little bit over the top in description of my country as a whole. That wasn't even a hockey game. :p
The question now is what is going to be more traumatizing, Tsukasa's experience at Comiket, or poor Aya Hirano's experience next week at Animeexpo where she gets to meet the American fans for the first time and possibly have to escape an abduction attempt or two.
I'd never thought of abducting the little elf..... its probably a good thing I'm a thousand miles away :)

I know that many, many Japanese are facinated by the Western anime fans.. people like that shouldn't exist to the average Japanese. Most can't believe they exist until they see it on TV. But Aya-chan is a seasoned seiyuu professional who has seen the otaku lime-light for a while now. She won't be intimated by the masses of nerd love. She'll be more impressed by the quality of the cosplay and the number of FEMALE OTAKU in Anime Expo, I believe. Masses of gaijin girls cosplay as male otaku characters... without monetary compesation. That is what's going to shock her, I'm sure. COMIKET is more like 90-95% male, but anime cons are frequently 50% or more female.
I'm sure quit a few abduction schemes on her has been planned and maybe even attempted in Japan... all to no avail. :)

I would never abduct her, since I don't own an anime studio for her to record in. What would be the point of abducting her if she couldn't voice anymore? And hey, I want a second season of Haruhi, dammit.
Also, why would western anime fans be any weirder than Japanese fans of hollywood? Or, for that matter, Japanese fans of our various rejects? (I've heard of several European singers didn't really have a carreer until they set up shop in Japan. Maybe their songs sound better when you don't understand the lyrics?)

I laughed so hilariously loud at this episode, so funny! Especialy when I saw "Akira" that was just makind me laugh at head off, also Kagami's expression too.
Believe it or not, I didn't know about Sakai Izumi's passing until now. She was one of the first few Jpop artist I knew through watching anime. Really like the songs she did for Slam Dunk and DBGT. May she rest in peace.

I agree with most of the sentiments posted on this thread thus far. Being that this is an otaku-centric episode, this is one of my favorite episodes of Lucky Star to date. Now I haven't seen the fansub yet, but if you're an anime fan for many years, this episode is fairly easy to follow.
My highlights -- which are practically similar to everyone else's -- are:
Seeing how Kona-tachi's individual perspective of Comiket.
Seeing Kagami flustered in reading the FMP Sousuke X Gauln doujinshi.
Chihara Minori's cameo sans actual voice.
Tomokazu Seki vs. Tomokazu Sugita
Akira-sama's "cameo" appearance in the episode.
The "oba-san/oku-san" voice used for various insignificant characters.
The Hiiragi twins in shrine maiden attire, and the ensuing jokes that follow.
Akira-sama being too sick to do actual voice work in the episode and talk in Lucky Channel.
Izumi Sakai/ZARD tribute karaoke ending.

Quite simple, it's like you finding out that the most popular American show in China is, hypothetically of course, Star Trek. And massive of young Chinese are into Trekkie Cosplay. It's not something you expect to be popular overseas since it's really a fringe sub-culture in your own country. You would guess there are some fans, but the masses you see at cons? The number of gaijin otakus at Akiba? Just unreal.
I mean, your average Americans knows really next to nothing about JPOP culture. They may know what's a geisha but the have no clue who's Hamasaki Ayumi or what NANA the movie is about. So normal Japanese assume that Americans or Westerners either are not into Japanese music/tv/movies due to language differences, or that they're not used to seeing Asians as entertainers (and they would have a point - look at the number of Asians in Hollywood and their roles). So basically most Japanese assume that no Westerners would care about popular Japanese culture. No gaijin would/should know anything about "DownTown", "London Hearts", or "Ainori". Yet somehow, masses of young Western gaijin know who SUZUMIYA HARUHI is. Sings and Dances to obscure Otaku JPOP songs. Love the strange otaku things THEY've shunned. That's the shocking part. I mean, more Westerners probably have heard "Hare Hare Yukai" than the latest Koda Kimi single. What do you expect them to think? :)

What's scary are all the guys who cosplay as loligirl characters. :uhoh: I'll never get that image of the d00d cosplaying as Sumomo (Chobits) out of my head... it still haunts me. DX
I would prefer to cosplay as myself - slap on a ruffly meido outfit, put on a few ribbons, and I'm done. :p I wish I could cosplay as a meido-Kagami, but I'm *uber* picky with wigs. If it doesn't look a realistic purple color, or the hair feels like wire or yarn, I won't use it. (lol... "realistic purple hair"...)

I doubt you'll have to speak in Japanese to ask a question. XD I'm not going to the panel, so be sure to snap lots of pics ne. ;)

Its really quite funny watching the expressions of people near my car at stoplights and driving down the road when I'm blaring something from Yum! Yum! Orange, ZONE's harder stuff, KOTOKO's ~hane~, Ua's jazzy coffeehouse stuff, or just basic japanese ambient/techno/metal.
One motorcycle police officer was by me at the stoplight, leaned over and asked,
"wait.... that's not mexican.... what is...? Is that japanese?"
<nod> ... Hai...
"That's really bizarre.... but cool." (I had one of Ua's more upbeat tunes playing at the time)
... and another convert was made :)

Oh you're blasting some stuff some people actually might enjoy here... I enjoy blasting the latest JPOP hits or just random anime tunes just to see the look on people's faces. I know the more mainstream a JPOP tune the lest likely anyone in the US has heard it. "Hey Buddy, you like this tune by Moriyama Naotaro?" HAHAHA. :D
I enjoy mainstream jpop about as much as I like "mainstream US pop" (the corporate machine variety ala "Z100" radio or the equivalent).
That is to say, I'd have to be heavily drugged so I couldn't get away. Sometimes I'll hear mainstream jpop and it feels like one is stuck in a bad imitation of a Perry Como variety hour, or perhaps Tony Orlando and Dawn, or ..... that part of the music culture that pretended Beatles never went "wierd" and burrowed its way into the Disco part of the 70s whilst the rest of us ran for FM radio.
Now I've stopped making sense to most of the audience.
(checks the torrents again for ep 12....) tonight I'll watch EnA's version of ep 9 and 10 and see if I thumbs up their version of reality.
Oh please do a miko-kagami... that's her real job you know. :) Trust me, I'd love to. I wish I had a miko outfit, and though I could pull off Kagami without the purple hair, I'd feel wrong unless I had very similar ribbons.
This past year I obtained (GETTO!) a pair of high-quality neko-mimi with ribbon that you tie under your chin. (It's definitely not one of those cheap cat ear hairbands you can find in the dollar store.) I intend to wear that to AX. :3

Are you talking John Lennon and Number Nine weird, or Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds weird?
My policy on J-POP seems to be I like it when it's male artists (sometimes), but I often find myself scrambling for the x button or skipping openings when its a female singer unless the backup part is really good. I don't know why that is, but I think it comes down to not liking their voices. I'm the kind of guy that likes straight up singing as if the singer can feel the music flowing through them and I think female J-POP artists all to often are putting on a voice so to speak, which combined with the statuesque style of live performance involving hand gestures and smiling makes it seem too produced rather than from the soul.
I mean I'm not asking for AC/DC or Freddie Mercury style showboating, but just a little more feeling like I see in J-ROCK acts such as the JAM Project.
It's okay not liking mainstream JPOP... especially the male singers. I only like a few and Moriyama just happen to be one of them. Mainstream JPOP has been the domain of girlish looking idol for way too long. There used to be really cool bands like Mr.Children and Spitz, but now days it's mostly just psudo hip hop. The pop scene is pretty much dominated by female tastes, and the J-gals like their guy thin, pale, and hairless with feminine facial features. If you ask most Japanese guys they hate their mainstream music scene with a passion; but there's a stong underground movement as you guys might have known. I just use JPOP to irk ppl mostly; I love the shows and movies attached to the tunes much more. Japan has the best variety and reality TV shows, but too bad not many people knows this.

Wah.. all this talking about AX07 makes me want to go.. :(
From what you guys said so far, this is definately an episode to look foward to. :3
About cosplaying as Kagami, it is not necessary to fully mimic her appearances. Otherwise, you would need to go for plastic surgery as well to imitate her eyes, :p amongst other drastic measures.
What looks good in an animation may not look good in real life, garish even. The opposite holds true as well. All you need to do is to capture the ESSENCE of the character and let people recognise immediately who you are trying to cosplay as.
In the case of the hair, do consider the option of having purple highlights instead of a totally purple wig.
Cheers.

Say, has Kipi done anything related to Lucky Star yet?
I think a Tsukasa by her would be an instant win. :)
[ My browser ate my last post in episode 10, so I've been upset and also busy and have lurked since. x.x But I've still been watching. ]
Watched the raw -- it was truly EPIC .. for many of the reasons listed already.
Blushing Kagami melts my heart.
And it seems the Hiiragi household has central heating while the Izumi household does not. Konata and co. are all with the heavy coats/robes and those awesome table warmers. But Kagami, seen on the phone with Konata, is dressed just normally.
Poor Akira-sama gets only one word in the whole episode .. and it gets cut off, too. Was she saying "Fumoffu"?
Sebastian (I will just call him that now) as the paperboy?
Konata's military briefing (that's what it looked like) of the con with Kagami and Tsukasa was hilarious. Didn't understand a word she said >.> but just the mood of it. And that music! Very Final-Fantasy-pre-epic-battle-like. Konata wants pre-emptive strikes and perfection.
Say, has Kipi done anything related to Lucky Star yet?

I don't think Kipa-san is the type of cosplayer to do anyone from Lucky Star. I think this by looking at her past track record. I don't think she'd go well with the different hair colors that the characters have.
Lows:
-Every single person seems to have the exact same voice that sounds like Freeza from Dragon Ball Z and its really unnerving and unnatural
I'd have to concur with Hahiru and Kaioshin_Sama.
I was aware that Kujira and Tachiki Fumihiko voice background characters (hard to miss them on the credits/cast listing *smirk*), but unlike in all previous episodes this fact did not manifest itself in such in obvious and utterly annoying manner.
(Lots of background characters spoke in a short time span during comike part.)
Makes me wonder whether Lucky Star is run on such a low budget they can't afford an other seiyuu than Kujira, who is able to do a wider spectrum of voices. Kujira seems to be trying to use a different voice... but to me, they all sound too similar to create the illusion of a different person...
And her voice really doesn't suit some of the background characters persons at comike (read: young females), as Hahiru pointed out.
Either way, it heavily dented my impression of this otherwise excellent episode for me.
I tend to think the karaoke sessions are scripted, but the seiyuu's are allowed to ad-lib to some extent. Or simply they're done in one go, without re-takes.
Incidentally, take another peek at the very end of episode 10's karaoke session, where Kagami (Katō Emiri) sings Kahala Tomomi's 'I'm proud'.
The laughter in that episode also sounds sincere/not acted and unfiltered.
The karaoke sessions always have been a special part of the show, for me ;)
*dreams* I hope they'll release a CD of all karaoke sessions *dreams*.

My favorite part of this wonderful ep was near the beginning when Kagami came in and pushed down on Konata's head. This was a real Kagami episode, for me. She was at her cutest.
I found myself admiring the animation several times. Like the scene where Kona-chan gets tea for her father. The movements were so good. (As well, Kona-chan's motivations in that whole sequence seemed like a real slice of hidden Japanese culture -- which is to say all human culture, lol.) By the way, I do watch the OP every time, and was really admiring the movement there, again, as well.
I find the same-deep-voiced secondary women characters pretty bizarre, but I've come to enjoy it: it's another bit of self-referential humor. But I like anything that artfully saves money, thereby making more anime possible.
I actually listen to more classical music than anything, but I enjoy some bubble-gum j-pop, when it has a melody or a hook, and when it is sung by idols who can hit the notes. J-pop that imitates western rock tends (over-generalization) to be gutless but manic, to my ear. But I do know some great Japanese pop singers, who are at another level from idols: Onitsuka Chihiro (my favorite singer in the world) and Suga Shikao come to mind, and I like KOKIA, too.
It gives me a weird thrill to see kj1980 enjoying this show so much, and giving out some 10s. Not jaded, after all these years.
By the way, I note on Sanpei Yuuko's blog (http://blog.excite.co.jp/yukobako/) that she will be doing an event (http://www.pasela.co.jp/paselabo/index.html)for a big karaoke chain, produced by Koshimizu Ami, that involves the "nostalgia" of songs from older anime. Has Lucky Star started something?
Damn, I needed to hear more of the ED song. Where are my ZARD CDs?
This episode easily ranks a 9/10 (not that I ever vote).
I wonder how accurately this episode portrayed this past Comike, where I assume the Haruhi DVD marketing frenzy was in full swing? Remember, the SHnY DVD vol. 6 (containing ep. 12 Live A Live and ep.13) released just a week prior to when this episode takes place. See the truck with the SHnY concert image driving by? Of course, the references to other anime/manga series is greatly welcomed too. Amongst the cosplayers in the background behind a lost and flustered Tsukasa I spotted an Al from Fullmetal Alchemist, a Keroro Gunso, a Haruhi and bunny-girl Mikuru (possibly a maid Mikuru, but it may not be), and (I think) Robin from One Piece.
Plus, the Tomokazu vs. Tomokazu scene was awesome.
I echo chc's sentiments on the karaoke ending scenes. I look forward to them every week for the interplay between the characters and the actresses that voice them. The lines between the character and the seiyuu seem to blur in the segment. Not to mention the surprise of, "what song this week?" and the nostalgia factor of hearing old favorite songs.

I have seen pics of her doing characters with blonde, white and purple hair (all wigs of course). So the hair color is hardly an obstacle for her.
She already did Akari from To Heart; So doing a Tsukasa sounds quite possible........... at least to me. :p

Gawd thats a good Akari, how i remember this.
So yeah, Lucky Star cosplay please. :3
In my opinion, the secondary character voice sameness serves two purposes:
1) budget: leaves more money for foreground activities (audio version of "blob people"
2) art: people in the background of life all sound alike unless they're about to step forward to stage center area :)
I'd say its a lot of both. L*S isn't a "Low budget" production. Please reserve that for things like "cabbage love" or even some favorites of mine (Petopetosan, Lamune). L*S is a *lower* budget production than something like Kanon or Clannad, I'll surmise. But then, the art style of the comic permits that anyway (this isn't hyper-realistic style L*S, eh?).
They save their money shots for specific moments and it shows what they might have done with an infinite budget.
unfortunately i haven't seen ep 12 yet....makes me sad..
Personally I find Kujira voicing all the background females quite funny because of how utterly wrong it sounds.:heh:
Hopefully that was the intention behind using her(while also saving budget of course).
I think the reason that Kyoani use Kujira and Tachiki Fumihiko to voicing all the background characters are a joke on purpose to make Lucky Star look like a low budget project make by some low-profit animation studio and can't afford to hire more voice actors.
And how can that be possible? No way that Lucky Star are low budget anime as your can see the top notch quality in the series (Yeah expect the voice for background character :D) and all other series made by Kyoani in the past they really done well in every part like Kanon2k6,AIR,Haruhi. All of these lead me to think that the only reason why Kyoani use 2-3 voice actors to voicing all the background character aren't for saving budget at all but it's all for humor. But In my opinion changing the voice for background female character would be great too
I really can't stand Kujira voice it's too bizarre for a girl to have voice like that ^^;;
I was spot these gag since episode 8 because there a long list of background character who's voiced by Kujira and Tachiki at the ending credits and then I realized that it's make me laugh a lots :heh:

Obviously, a lot of people are spinning-in-their-chairs awaiting ep 12

There was a Death Note reference in episode 4? Hmm... I must have either missed it or forgotten about it. I really ought to rewatch some of these episodes a bit more.
I'm quite surprised by how anxious I am to see this episode. I rarely ever feel this way about episodic shows; usually only stuff with a continous and engaging storyline make me feel like this. I mean, I'm more excited to see this episode than Sola 13... >_<
So to pass the time, I'll make a new signature. ^_^

I am lead to believe it actually is.
Both scenes (Lucky Star & Death Note) are about revealling someones name, and Kagami's voice in that scene is distorded in the same way as Matsuda's in DN.
But that's just what I think. I'll stop this here, before going off-topic even more. :heh:
As for the episode itself, it looks mighty interesting as many people have already said. Though, I'll go to heaven if they make one in a video game event next time. :D
Not saying it ain't..... but putting people behind screens with distorted voices is just pretty typical in "inside edition" news segments. That's the tough thing about catching references... sometimes a jumper is just a jumper, or they could both be references to a third thing. or it could be a DN reference.
When creating reference guides, those sorts of qualifications are usually noted.
This is true, however the setting is exactly the same. The characters are in Death Note were also on stage with the same blue floor and bright lights, and if I remember correctly, even the wall behind them is purple/reddish as well. The announcer and the witness are sitting in the same positions.
I don't remember if I saw that in the anime or manga.. I quit watching the DN anime, but read the entire manga.
I've stopped pointing out little references I'm unsure about for fear of getting yelled at. *swt!* I figure if it *is* a reference, someone else will mention it. *swtswt*
Edit: Aah, looked at WinD's notes. They say the scene's from DN too. :)
Ah... the colors and positioning are a giveaway. Its almost certainly a DN ref then :)

Aah... I didn't know that (it looks very different from how they're done in the U.S. ne - it totally didn't occur to me that it'd be different [and so flashy O_o] in Japan). All right then, I'll take your word for it. :)

Have no idea what is going on. but i'm in a room with lots of people
a chanserv that keeps +1'ing

What's the deal with mirc? don't these guys have a website or sth?
They just idle there because most of the releases are first released in IRC then torrent.
The +'s are what we call "voices" It gives priority downloads over non-voiced people, and voices are the only people who can speak when the chan is set to moderated.

New to IRC eh? Sounds like you expected discussions take place 24/7 on IRC.
Well, idling/lurking is what mostly happening on IRC.
Although the internet is global, and there's bound to be someone awake, online and watching your lines at any given moment, there's no obligation to reply. You'll learn the ways of lurkin' *smirk*
(Oh well, for most people IRC is a thing of the past, since DDL sites and BT have become a more common and convenient way of obtaining releases.)
Furthermore, at the time of your visit to #a.f.k. it was 7am EST (1pm your local time); most Americans were still asleep. This alone decreased your chances of bumping into active discussion partners.
The people you might have encountered on IRC at that time were most likely originating from Asia / Oceania and Europe.
What's the deal with mirc? don't these guys have a website or sth?
Lastly, mIRC is one of many clients/programs you use to access IRC. It does have a website at http://www.mirc.com/
The fansub group a.f.k. may not have a website, but they do have a torrent page at scarywater and their irc channel.
The lack of a web presence does not make a.f.k. a fansub group of lesser standard...

I think outcast_within misread +1 and meant chanserv constantly adjusting the chan limit. ( e.g. * ChanServ sets mode: +l 175 ). This is a protective measure, btw.

1. I will learn the ways of lurking. I feel like the utter noob shouting around in a room full of people who don't say anything.
2. The lack of a.f.k's webpage doesn't make them of a lesser standard. I just like reading up on the people and how they are like. Kiss-sub very friendly people. TRIAD Very strange cynical people.
3. It's possible to get the lucky star eps through mirc? hmm well so far torrents have been my friend and i think they continue to be still. (But i will check the link below out. Thank you.
4. i heard some guy talking on mirc about rss :D gonna do some research in that.
5. i did expect more people to talk on mirc as the reason i installed mirc was i read that people where spinning circles there in anticipation of the next ep. Maybe they do, but they just don't type about it.

Watching this episode made me realize that I'm not as Otaku-ish as I thought... I had to google/wiki some of the stuffs you guys are talking about @.@
(Although as a diehard One Piece fan I did pick up a Nico Robin cosplayer in the "Tsukasa asking for direction" scene, which many prolly would miss but made me happy)
Good episode nonetheless, lots of Kagamin goodness = I'm sold. Although the biggest laugh I got comes from Akira's "appearance"

It isn't Mirc it's IRC and some people hate people who call it mirc.
Around 200 people sit their in the chatroom mostly idling. They idle in anticipation of an anouncement. Or just to show their respect to the subbing group.
One of the operators is named kanna, i saw this name also on the triad forums. Maybe he works in both groups.
You should never PM one of the ops. I did cos i thought it would be a nice way to part. But i found out some people can get kicked and get back. And some people just get banned :)

That's pretty much IRC for you in general, people tend to idle for a reason. That's why I never really use it as even talking in a channel is dangerous unless you have voice or run the channel, pretty much anything can get you banned and called a name on top of things. IRC culture does not really help new people out much, they tend to just ban them from what I've learned from my experiences. The best thing to do is ask somebody who looks friendly for advice via PM, read the rules and don't bother talking in the actual forum (Seriously), just use commands get the file and get the hell out of there as fast as possible.
It shouldn't be permanent though so you might as well try again. Overall though I would just wait for the torrent as you won't have to wait in a queue and deal with kicks, bans and commands.
Anh_Minh
2007-06-27, 16:42
OK, Kaioshin, you definitely frequented the wrong channels.
My advice would be to idle for a bit and read the conversations that go on in there till you've got an idea of how things are done. Don't neglect to read the topic for rules.
Also, for more IRC practice, find the channel of a webcomic, if you're into those. A small one (less than 20 users). Those are pretty friendly.
edit: Oh, yeah, and do not assume that people like being PMed by strangers. They generally don't.

2007-06-27, 17:15
Yes. I would have to agree with Anh_Minh. I've been using IRC for a while now and I've not had many problems. If you read the topics, rules etc... you should be fine. All the channels I'm an op in I very rarely ban people and I usually try to help where possible. I've also received help from people in my time in getting accustomed to it. A lot of the channels I'm usually in are quite lenient but as ever people do differ and you are right in saying that you can sometimes get banned for looking at someone in the wrong way as it were. Personally I avoid those types of channels and fortunately for me those experiences have been few and far between.

Yeah, I've heard from a friend that his Manga related channels are pretty liberal and friendly. I fully admit that by chance I stumbled on what are generally regarded to be two of the worst channels for open ended discussion and it has forever turned me off from IRC on top of finding it not to be all that useful, but I also took another thing away from that, if the distributor doesn't have a website, but has an IRC Channel, there's probably a reason. Tread with caution. :uhoh: However, what you said about the PM thing is true, just don't do it.
To Outcast_Within, this is probably why you got the ban, it seems extreme and it probably is, but it's also one of the things that are usually listed in the rules.
There are like, five or ten questions you never ask in most IRC channels (because they've heard them 100000 times and are sick to death of it). Do some googling and wiki on IRC etiquette before entering and you'll be more successful. Also remember that IRC chan are like tribes: each one has its own set of taboos which if violated means they feast on your bits. :)
That IRC snippet is interesting.... I'm getting this odd feeling that AnimeExpo may spurt out some licensing agreements that leaves sub watchers moaning and rending their garments.

You think Lucky Star is licensed then.... hmmmm.... could be. If it is hopefully they don't try and find Aya Hirano and go "WHHHHHYYYYYYY?! HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME?!" and have her go "ARA?" "WHHHYYYY" "KYAAAAAA!".
In IRC, you are always the channel's operators' bitch. And people wonder nowadays why most people merely "park" in the channels and don't talk at all..
Rule of thumb:
1. Lurk long enough to get the list (!list) of bots that host the packet
2. Request that packet you want
3. Get your file and get out of there soon as it's done
4. Don't pester the chanops or annoy the subbers with requests of when the next episode is done. They're fans and they do have a life outside fansubbing.
That way, you don't stay long enough to get booted or worse still banned. :D If you want to be friendly, there are non-xdcc chans where fans gather to chat about anime in general.
The philosophy under the hood is probably that if you can grasp the meaning of IRC and get as far as entering a channel, you are expected to self-help and research your way to get what you want instead of blatantly asking. After all, the regular users got there on their own and so should you.
In addition, the upper echelons of a channel tend to think the place as they own little private discussion room, sort of an inner membership that no one else has. Most of them probably aren't too happy to have the channel flooded with people they don't know talking about things outside their interests.
IRC is pretty close to real life conversation if you think about it. Imagine a channel as this little circle of friends talking to each other, sometimes while serving other people. They probably get irritated if their customers get too noisy, or if a complete stranger just walks in to them and interrupts their conversation with an irrelevant subject. You probably should stand there and listen to them for a while before actually saying something.

Oh come on that was too easy. Why bother man? :p
By the way, while we're waiting I'd like to mention I noticed a Nico Robin cosplayer among the various cosplayers in this episode. This marks the first time in a while I can recall seeing a non-Kadokawa trademark used in a Lucky Star episode. Although if I recall, Toei, Bandai and Kadokawa all hold stock in each others companies and are slowly eating each other. They'll all merge at some point probably. The whole industry is practically run by Bandai anyway at this point so trademarks are becoming less of an issue for these three.

Its is the end of the world when you plan your week on what day fansubs are released:
sunday/ monday = gurren lagann
tuesday night/ wednesday = lucky star
thursday = death note
devil may cry = when ever
my whole plan has been destroyed. GAH and death note has finished... my god...all is lost
Silly, that's why you shouldn't plan that. :p And anyways... many subbers release at a different time each week depending how difficult it is to sub the episodes they're working on (and how much of a life the subbers have got ;) ).

Now that the fansub is up, I can honestly say that his episode was pretty great. It had a whole lot of humor, and I'd like to think it as one of the better episodes of the series. Definitely a great episode.
I liked that the Lucky Channel section was significantly shortened, as I prefered more of the standard Kona-chan hijinks. Also, the karaoke at the end was...kind of not there? There was a brief moment of actually song, and I had no idea what the song is from. Wish I did, it sounded kind of awesome. :D

This episode gave me some good chuckles, only the second so far for this series that has accomplished this, although I've only seen 8 or so of them (its not like you have to watch it in order). The part with the two booth guys which had the VA's from the other shows was entertaining, coulda used more lucky channelu though.

Wow, now that was a fun episode.
I absolutely loved Commander Konata barking orders to her troops in the beginning. She certainly knows her stuff.
Tomokazu vs. Tomokazu was fantastic to watch. I was so giddy with laughter at all the ironies of that scene.
They do seem to have gone a bit overboard with the Haruhi references though, IMHO.
Oh, and Akira's totally random "FUMOFFU!" was just great...
Yay translator's notes! And I don't think they take away from the experience of the "general viewer" -- in fact, they learn something!
...Although Sugita's "By George" was ... weird. That makes him sound like an old British detective or something.
And ooh, new version of the opening. Time for a thousand more YouTube parodies!
And a funny Sailormoon reference there, I believe, from Sebastian.
Absolutely loved the whole convention. And then tacking on Kagamin in miko wear for the second half of the episode was a double-dose of pure 10/10 for this episode.
"There's this weird jinx ... where every circle suddenly becomes big after she buys a book!" Hehehehehe, a little bit of subtle breaking of the fourth wall there? Or since the universe of the show (although six months in the past) is semi-tied to whatever happens in the present day.
And the word accompanied with the punch to Sugita was "Bakayaro"? That surely does not translate to a word as tame as "Fool" but I suppose anything more vulgar would be a little out of place. ^^;
next, hiiragi in kimono :heh: somehow their kimono closely resembles this
http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/8200/1311885196915shakugannoca3.jpg
That's not a kimono, its a chihaya, worn by Shinto shrine maidens. Tsukasa and Kagami are miko ... they work for their dad who is a priest of the local Shinto shrine. The chihaya is made up of a dark red hakama, pleated pants, a white yukata style shirt with very long and wide sleeves, and tabi-style socks. Sometimes they'll have ribbons in their hair in a particular style to their shrine.

Darn, what was that ED song? I get the feeling I should know it, but I can't remember from where.
In the summer, Konata and Kagami went without Tsukasa? Was that a date?
Kagami is right, it's only for that stuff, but Konata does sound intelligent and passionate when it comes to otaku stuff.
I'm sure next time she comes, Kagami will buy yaoi. The first time was a bit too much for her, but once she's prepared...

Probably a timely and fitting tribute by Kyo-Ani to ZARD's lead singer Sakai Izumi, who sadly passed away last month after falling off a flight of stairs in a hospital while being treated for cervical cancer.
I know Comike is huge, but no matter how many times I see Comike being portrayed in media (be it in TV series like Densha Otoko or in this episode), I'm still impressed at the amount of people this fan-organized convention draws. So huge that Kona-chan has to give out meticulous army-like commands to Kagami-sama and Tsukasa-chan.
Quite ironic for Anime Tenchou's boss President Takahashi to call Sousuke and Kyon "unpopular" when Anime Tenchou and Sugita both rightly point out they're both "main characters". LOL
And Chihara Minori cameo as herself FTW.
It's a common ritual to impress your elders during New Year (or Chinese New Year) so you could get your annual packet money. But Kona-chan sure is working really hard for every penny. :D
LOL at Kona-chan asking Miyuki about packet money just after her dad explained it to him. Poor Sousuke. :heh:
Kona-chan sure is straight to the point when saying Nanako-sensei's online all the time.
Poor Akira-sama. As a result, Sebast...I mean Shiraishi was sensible to keep Lucky Channel brief.
To Stratos of a.f.k.: Once again great work on the new episode. Though can I make a comment? It's already halfway through the series, but I wonder why your karaoke for the OP Motteike! Sailor Fuku is still only available in romaji. (I'm the sort that tries not to read any romaji when possible while learning, reading and writing Japanese. ) The single's out for sometime already with lyrics attached. Of course I understand if you couldn't be bothered in order to spend more time on translating the main stuff.

that was the whole point...its just blatantly obvious that the president tried to make it ironic in the most comical fashion XD
hightlight for me in this ep as the be the punch taken by sugita...well done! :heh: that just had to happen sooner or later for all the sarcastic remarks made while being kyon, yuuichi etc...now thats one less taken i wonder when the next "abuse sugita" scene comes in :3
the comiket scene was all full of win...and i have to say that i had deja vu looking at the cue from outside the hall...it reminded me of a genshiken ep :heh:
That's not a kimono, its a chihaya, worn by Shinto shrine maidens. Tsukasa and Kagami are miko ... they work for their dad who is a priest of the local Shinto shrine. The chihaya is made up of a dark red hakama, pleated pants, a white yukata style shirt with very long and wide sleeves, and tabi-style socks. Sometimes they'll have ribbons in their hair in a particular style to their shrine.
ah thanks for the info... now on second look it is certainly different from the kimono they wore in earlier episode... this is really confusing :upset:

Is it just me, or does that look like Rena from Higurashi on the poster in the back?
extremely late answer, and people already thought this as well ^^"
yes it is rena, they use the PS2 Game, Matsuri CG (http://www.alchemist-net.co.jp/products/higurashi_matsuri/img/top.jpg)
talking about reference,
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/7206/snapshot20070630123024bj4.th.jpg (http://img217.imageshack.us/my.php?image=snapshot20070630123024bj4.jpg)
Far left poster gives me Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLES vibes. (Yuko on the left, Shaolan and Sakura on the right... i may stretch too much my imagination thought :heh:)
as for the blue poster, the guy looks like Archer... don't have any clue for the girl below him.
well then, as for the episode itself :
Kagami's move at the very start was really cute and funny. Kona-chan and Kyo-chan look really like a couple :heh:
Konata, Cleaning and You... i dunno why, but what she said is pretty familiar to me XD
Tsukasa's innocence is really too cute. considering where they are going, i was expecting lots of trouble with her :D
Cosplayers and nerdy otaku cluttering the train... it looks so unreal and funny, but it is the (sad?) truth. Kagami's reaction sound to be only the beginning of the trial :heh:
just like what deathy said, it prety much look like Genshiken. was wondering if konata will act like Madarame Harunobu, and i was certainly not disappointed XD
Oba-san voice once again. i will agree with the major opinion here : rather than low budget, its purpose is probably minaly on comedy, since Kujira doesn't even bother to adapt her voice (not only it is wrong with the age of the char, but also with the expressions and all). i think it does work, but meh ^^
Tsukasa, completely lost. So predictable, and so great :D
Kagami tempted with that flashy Yaoi between Sousuke and Gauron. looks pretty hardcore, but nevertherless, she just have a peek. she is now tainted! Konata, what have you done? :heh:
Anime Tenchou buddies !
Tsukasa completely worn out. wasn't that exciting, ne? (is it me, or the right cosplayer is Nico Robin, from One Piece?). The BGM used here was really a perfect choice!
Konata's past is just scary... she is an HARDCORE otaku to say the least... she is beyond salvation :heh:
Chihara Minori ! (and some Kanon posters reference in the same scene)
w00t, the real boss is there, Anime tenchou ! Seki VS sugita is probably the main attraction of this ep. Seki is really going berserk here. I can't help but laugh out loud how they were complaining about the lack of selling popularity of their respective characters XD. Once again, the BGM work wonder, and the joke was really striking "well, they are both main characters..." :heh:
More "tsundere" moments with kagamin :D. Hiragi sisters look really good with their shrine maiden outfit. (and i think i will agree with konata about the visitors and their REAL purpose of their visit XD)
More antics with Konata's dad. he deserves constant screentime.
LS : the direct reference with the show was really a nice touch. Short, but works well. Fumoffu!it is really hard to give less than a 9 for this ep in my book. on the other hand, something is lacking, compared to ep 6 and 10...
meh, i will round up, thus 10 :D
side note : while i understand that a.f.k tried to keep a solid pattern with their subs, i'm wondering why the last line of the MMORPG chat between konata and her teacher wasn't translated.
well, it isn't that hard to guess what she was writing, but meh ^^"
Far left poster gives me Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLES vibes. (Yuko on the left, Shaolan and Sakura on the right... i may stretch too much my imagination thought :heh:)
Don't worry, i was thinking the same thing while watching that scene. Thats why i love rewatching the first part of this episode.
was wondering if konata will act like Madarame Harunobu, and i was certainly not disappointed XD
Madarame is still on a much higher level then Konata.
Even though I really wanted to see a Shining Finger attack, I still gave it 10.
Operation Comiket mission orders = 1
Haruhi and FMP references = 1
Haruhi and FMP images = 1
Nico Robin = 1
Chihara Minori = 1
Chou Nekketsu Animate Tenchou = 1
Tomokazu Sugita = 1
Tomokazu Showdown = 1
The comiket segment alone already gave me at least an 8, I guess its 1 for the 2nd half and 1 more for Lucky Channel.
I'm sure I laughed at more parts than what I've mentioned, so I know my scoring system is not accurate.
Am I the only the one that sees a double layered Shakugan no Shana reference?

If I could give this episode a 20 out of 10, I would. It's that good.
Not sure if it has been mentioned but...
When Sugita said: Nani ka... Buki ga nai no ka? (Anything I can use as a weapon?)
Its directly from our favourite Data Entity showdown.
EDIT:
I couldn't find any Shana reference, I need some enlightenment.
ah thanks for the info... now on second look it is certainly different from the kimono they wore in earlier episode... this is really confusing :upset:
If you're talking about what they were wearing in episode 5 (the summer festival), they were wearing yukata, which are different from your standard kimono in that they're lighter and much more comfortable. (Myself, I have a purpley yukata with goldfish on it. X3)
Far left poster gives me Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLES vibes. (Yuko on the left, Shaolan and Sakura on the right... i may stretch too much my imagination thought :heh:)
I see Yuuko, but I really can't make anything out on the right side of the poster... so blurry.

Well I certainly can't score points for the Haruhi references anymore as those have run there course and are pretty much just another part of the show now, but when I do the review on my blog tonight I'll see what I can come up with.
Looking at this list, Chihara Minori is never a good thing (bland bland voice acting), I was hoping we could go most of the anime without her presence, but I guess now is the time unfortunately. Tomkazu Sugita will definitely score points for his appearance because that is the only way I could see him get pummeled by Anime Tenchou. Operation Comiket was good to as it seemed more like a war plan then casual safety instructions. Nico Robin was just surprising as that's a Toei license and it's rare to see any mention (I can't really call them direct references as they just kind of pop up) of anything outside of the usual Haruhi and Kanon ones, for that I might be able to award some effort points.
Finally... got to see ep 12.
The convention sequence was entertaining but I found the last part of it just completely boring (the card product battle)... sorry, just wasn't amusing to me. I did love the precursor where Kagami had to translate for Kona while using her for a ledge and the military style attack on the convention by Kona (I do that myself :) ). Poor Tsukasa and fabulous Kagami expressions.
On the other hand, I give the temple sequence and the New Year's sequence a *15* if the numbers went up that high. That is core purity Lucky Star material.
And <drumroll> I thoroughly enjoyed L*C for a change :)

Can't remember the exact scene from Gundam myself but it did sound like Sugita was impersonating Amuro's voice there. :)

He did a pretty poor job then. I get the reference to the discovery of the Beam Saber (He had a shield and no practical way to engage the Zaku beyond smashing it with the shield), but he sure didn't sound like Tohru Furuya if that's what he was going for.

Well, watched the episode, and like many have said, the part about Kagami picking that manga was the best part of the whole deal. :)
Although more than her reactions, it was how she got around to grab the manga what got me laughing in the first place. :heh:
Lucky channel was so short, that I didnt have time to decide if it was good or not. :eyespin:

I thought it might have been that scene - when Amuro first climbs into the RX-78 right? Thanks for that.
As for Sugita's impersonation, I thought it was good but then i don't hate the guy like you seem to do. :p

Reasonable ep. Some funny moments and, as usual, some moments that just went completely over my head. In all the Lucky Star eps, this ranks somewhere in the middle.
I'm with Vexx, the seiyuu "joke" was boring and pointless. It did the same sort of thing as the last Anime Tenchou joke... it built itself up and then fizzled into an anti-climax. It was another case of a reference-for-the-sake-of-a-reference, and one gets fairly used to that from this show by now, but I certainly wouldn't list them among the things that makes Lucky Star appealing.
A few redeeming moments, but nothing I saw in this ep has made me change my opinion of this show, ie, it's hit-and-miss.
Finally saw it.
Comiket half (you know...absolutely nobody in a typical American audience would understand this):
Kagami on Konata. 'Nuff said. Is it just me or did anyone feel that there's something really tragic coming along when Konata put down the phone during cleaning?
I seriously expected a lot of fun in a Comiket-centered episode. Sadly, my predictions traditionally end up with completely opposite outcomes (that explains me being really pessimistic). Military Konata is a good start for the half, complete with Konata mecha sounds. Then again, this military objective pattern is exactly what I do when I go out buying things. Sad thing is I completely suck at wandering around. Those female booth attendants with that freaky man voice is just infinitely creepy.
Okay, maybe it's because I got spoiled, but I didn't find Kagami's yaoi experience that funny. It was just cute and pure doujin fodder. The real question, though, is if this is her first time with yaoi, how did Kagami miss it on her first time around? (Or did she not?)
Believe it or not, the Akira stand was the only part where I laughed out loud. I love how all of her most hyped events end up flat dead. Then I see the seiyuu skit , which was, to popular opinion, pretty dumb. So far, Initial D is the only "glamour scene" that had me laughing. The others just aren't as good.
New Year's half:
First things first, Sochirou's creepiness is hitting a new high. What's best in this half, though, is how much Kagami wished to be with everyone else (wait...she threw out Konata). Does Kagami think of Konata as sort of a tool (you know...for understanding) that she doesn't want to be seen using? Or did she not mention Konata because she unconsciously took her for granted already?
The rest isn't funny nor cute.
7/10. Lowest for L*S so far. It just wasn't very cute, funny, or open-ended enough for my imagination. Plus, the novelty effect didn't do well on me this time around.
Kagami seems to be functionally unable to admit Kona is probably her best friend outside of her sister. That's a bit of a tragedy for her because in her mind... admitting that would mean admitting she's 'not a mainstream girl'.
I don't know that I would rank Sochirou's behavior as creepy so much as bittersweet. The guy really has no bad intentions... he's just swept up in the moe of the shrine maiden mystique and beautiful young things. Kagami herself is forced to admit that some of the mystique of shrines revolves around miko. Gut feel is that he'd never want some old guy to hit on Kona so he would never do that himself.
Hmmm, actually I would think any American who'd been to or seen a fan convention would pretty much know the routine (whether it be a sci-fi, anime, gaming, sports, tradeswap, or other fan-focused convention). But someone who hasn't been a fan might just be confused. I agree that the "glamour sequence" (nice phrase :) ) was really underwhelming.
hmm i was wondering, was Kagami accually buying those weird doujin mangas from first seller?
it was that part where after Kona-chan and the others went in Comiket
Not sure .. but Kagami was buying manga using the list that Kona had given her. Kagami wasn't buying anything on her own (I'm just a buying drone).
She got tempted to look as she walked by the doujinshi of S&M doom and was shocked to see her favorite characters in scenes we'll leave to the imagination. She didn't buy them but ran like a rabbit :)
I think she did buy them, but they were part of Konata's shopping list.

I've given the episode a 7.5/10 on my blog just now. I guess I'll round it up to 8 here. The main thing I took from this episode was that it finally stayed on theme for the episode, but didn't seem to know what to do for that theme for the most part in terms of overall variety.
Edit: Now it really is up. I could have sworn I put it up last night, but maybe when I had to do an emergency shutdown, even though I had clicked publish, it must have lagged and then never got fully uploaded.

another great episode!
I really liked all the cameo cosplayers in the background when Konata, Kagami, and Tsukasa went to that comic convention...I could only recognize some though:heh:
oh yea and the VA for Yuki from Haruhi also made a cameo appearance.
and the battle of the Tomokazu's! hahaha yups, Tomakazu seki, Sousuke's VA, made another VA appearance with the same character from episode 10, and also Tomokazu Sugita, Kyon's VA also made a VA appearance...hahahha that was a great battle that they had.
9/10, Lucky Channel was short this time around, but it was still good!
One blogger found info on an analysis of Konata's shopping list at Comiket.
http://www.alafista.com/2007/07/01/konata-comiket-list/
How naughty of Konata...
Looking at this list, Chihara Minori is never a good thing (bland bland voice acting), I was hoping we could go most of the anime without her presence, but I guess now is the time unfortunately. Minorin didn't speak at all so, I don't see anything that has to do with her voice acting affecting scores here. Plus if she speaks, most of us would probably add more points.
She scores points here because she looks absolutely cute and cudly in Lucky Star art style.
that was an awesome episode. love when tsukasa got lost, and the fight between the sosuke doujin and kyon.

Meh, not really thrilled with AFK's subs this time around. But then again, I guess Japanese foods doesn't really have a western equivalent and thus the reason for the footnotes.
Either that, or they're too busy with AnimeExpo this weekend. :heh:
As for the episode itself, BL love Kagami was fun. Sooner or later she will fall to the dark side (aka Otaku-ism) like Kona, MWAHAHAHAHA!
Kinda odd though that its Kagamis second Comiket and only Tsukasa's first, despite the twins doing almost everything together. It would've been easier to trick Tsukasa as well, so I really do wonder why Tsukasa didn't come along the first time around. Or maybe its just another subtle hint in that Kagami and Konata are really the closest friends of the group.
Another odd thing is that Kagami still had to wait an hour for the toilet. From what I heard, unlike western conventions where the split between the genders are almost 50/50, aren't Japanese convetions more like 90/10? If that is so, I find it hard to believe that the line to the washroom for womens is that long...
anime!Chihara was awesome cute though, and Anime Tenchou was as cool as the last one because of the Tomokazu battle. And finally, Miko twins! Now all we need is arubaito!Konata, hehehehe.
Lucky Channel though was da bomb. Especially how Minoru responds to Akira's grunts as if as though she was speaking her usual lines.
Finally we can talk about EP 12 now that English fansub is out for everyone...
A great winter matsuri episode... both New Year and Winter Comiket. I really really love all the Japanese reference in the show... it's almost the show is testing Otaku's own knowledge about normal Japanese everyday life. Perhaps since they know scores of gaijin will be watching the show, a test to see how many non-Japanese will actually get what they're doing.
I am shocked that a non-otaku like Kagami-sama will RETURN to comiket; this shows how much she really, really love Konata. Plus she probably can't resist her fujoshi instincts. Next time she visit she will be buyingf first her FMP BL doujin no doubt. Great, great description of Comiket battle plan. But it's strange they didn't bring any wheeled luggage; girls and weaker otaku usually drag one of those to store as many battle spoils as possible A little loli like kona should definately be without one, especially being a haruhi-otaku. Now we know we know exactly what doujin konata reads at night... :)
But aside from the expected otaku references, I really enjoyed the description of New Year activities. I think everyone who watch anime long enough should know that in New Year's day everyone visit a shinto or Buddhist temple and pray for the new year and get your fortune. The miko-chans will explain the poems on the fortune (usually written in classical Chinese). When you get a bad fortune you can "return" it by tying it to a special post or any tree branch. Supposedly you can avoid the bad luck. Loved the explanation of kagami's name... the idea that bronze mirrors are spritual objects stems from ancient China. Mirrors are still used in feng-shui to ward off evil spirits or negative energy.
Kona-chan's New Year greeting to her dad was pretty moving. Yeah she's probably doing it for the pochibukuro (very simliar to the Chinese red packet tradition) money, but I thought she really meant it. She's an ii-ko and her dad is a good, yet perverted, dad.
The show they're watching is the 2006 New Year special of the very popular variety show Downtown no Gaki no Tsukai ya Arahende!! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaki_no_tsukai) called the Batsu Gamu (punishment game). This is a 3-hour special where the member of DownTown comedy manzai group and show regulars get to spend 24 hours in a police station. Everyone will try to make them laugh, and if any of them do, someone will whack them in the ass with a police baton at full force. Talk about police brutality. Batsu Games are very popular special and there has been many version of it. This latest one got super-high rating and will probably become a new New Year Tradition like Kuohaku.
You can watch the whole thing in youtube starting with this one. Just search related term to find all 18 videos. You don't need subtitles to enjoy the show. This is slapstick comedy to the extreme:

This is one of the most popular past batsu gamu sketch, the English Lesson. Even gaijins will get this one:

Love Shiraishi as the host of Lucky Channel. Poor Akira-sama. She'll never appear in the main story.
This damn show... got me to fill my ipod with oldies by KyonKyon, Tomo-chan, ZARD, and Akina-chan, now I gets to watch them batsu gamu again.... BTW, beautiful (and insane) 32-years old Kahala Tomomi just got fired by her agency recently for being out of touch for a month. I guess this is really the end of her showbiz life.
I feel like such an ignorant when I read this posts :p....geeeeezzzz... I've got WAY too much to learn....
Two questions....
First.....Is there any reference being made in the kid that Tsukasa asks directions for? Or is he just a regular security person in the Comiket?
Second..... From previous episodes I have in my mind that Akira could possibly appear....maybe I got it wrong... Because Konata said something about a cousin joining the school soon.... Did I mixed up stuff in my head? I'm just hoping the cousin is Akira... Of course I haven't read the manga so it could be anyone else. Or ...uhmm,,,, in episode one I remember saying something about a childhood friend and asking "I wonder what happened to her", and sometimes I think she is talking about Akira

it is a very good episode indeed. When they went to comiket there were quite a number of laughing moments.
I'm late to watch the episode as usual and I see that a lot has been discussed already. i just wanted to say that from the point of view of learning japanese i found out some things which are new for me. for example I didnt know you could shorten happy new year wishes to simply saying 'あけおめ'
I see we're starting to attract the "I don't participate in the thread but I'll troll the vote poll" trolls. I wonder if they realize we can check their posts and arrive at an opinion about their relevance or lack of it :)
In general, the temple/new year's sequences and the convention lead up (minus the voice actor battle ending it) is some of the high points of the series for me ... which is especially note-worthy since a lot of it is anime-only (not in the manga).
@nikorai: casual japanese among close friends is amazingly short-hand, leaving off all kinds of the things that your average japanese teacher tries to impress on you. It is probably a better idea to listen to anyone but Kona speak though because she uses phrases that probably would get you a "?.?" look from most japanese :)

thanks for the comment, I'll keep that in mind.
I was rewatching the New Year's temple segment and realized we got an introductory quick view of two incoming characters (working as miko).
I kind of like the way people are introduced from the background and move quietly forward in this series.

Actually, the other two sisters had been around since early on. You first see them during the holidays when you had a split-screen for Tsukasa and Kagami, when they had breakfast. You also see one of them when Kagami ask her for help with her homework, and she replied that if even Kagami couldn't answer it, she got no hope of helping. (Even though she is in college.):heh:

First off: Listen to Vexx's wisdom. Konata is NOT a good example of Japanese speech.
In this case, though, you hit on something: あけおめ is not unusual. It's just very, very casual. While it's not an unusual phrase, it's not one you would use amongst close companions or people lower down the social tree. You'll notice that the only times you see it in the episode are when Konata speaks to friends (who reciprocate with the complete phrase) and when Nanako types it to Konata (and Konata had actually greeted Nanako with the formal phrase).

The background music playing in the background when Konata is giving her briefing is really similar to a Command & Conquer song. We know that the creators also reference songs, like that Initial D scene, so I don't think a game song is too off the mark. Or maybe having trumpets play fanfares to a beat of drums is a popular way to write patriotic war songs. But anyway, the song reminded me of the BG music for the USA side in C&C Generals

I think it's just a generic "calm before the storm" song with a "we have all these plans and we think it will work but we have a lot of work ahead of us" mood.

That song has appeared numerous time in the past episodes, usually when she's ready for another all-night campaign of netto gamu.

No, that wasn't it. That one was a sort of victory song with louder and more enthusiastic trumpets. The one we heard in ep12 is a bit darker.
Normally I just read through the L*S threads here being amazed by all the stuff people know (and seeing how ignorant I can be at all sorts of references....) and let myself enlighten ;)
Anyway, I loved this episode! The battle Tomokazu vs Tomokazu definitely was a highlight :D. And Kagamis facial expression at seeing/reading that BL doujin was just cute. Oh, and Akira's "appearance" in the actual show cracked me up *haha*

From what I heard, unlike western conventions where the split between the genders are almost 50/50, aren't Japanese convetions more like 90/10? If that is so, I find it hard to believe that the line to the washroom for womens is that long...
Actually, even if the split is like 90/10, it still feels credible for Kagami to wait that long - you know, sometimes women just take more time (hey, I'm female myself - so speaking from experience ;) )
Two questions....
Yes, they said that Akira is gonna appear - Akira herself stated so, if I remember correctly. And she DID appear - only as a paper figure :heh: . I don't think though that she is supposed to be Konata's cousin, seeing as Konata (in the series) wrote a postcard to Akira that got printed in Newtype (in the series and in real life....)

I see we're starting to attract the "I don't participate in the thread but I'll troll the vote poll" trolls. I wonder if they realize we can check their posts and arrive at an opinion about their relevance or lack of it :)
Eheh...
[I'd probably count as one of these "trolls".]
But I generally think people who do that have an opinion about how the series was, but either are indecisive like me [and I'm not good at scrutinizing] or they feel that they have nothing important to say, and posting would therefore seem like spam or something like that.
I always found that guy [I don't know his name, but he appears at 10:56] amusing whenever he appears. It's like over-dramatizing a plain and simple situation [which is the case most of the time in Lucky Star ^__^, but that always comes with the mock-battle scene].
I think that's what I like best about Lucky Star; the ability to watch normal situations become funny and, at times, over-exaggerated.
There's nothing wrong with lurking ... not the same thing as trolling at all :)
Heh, its only trolling if you score the series a "1" (painful) with no explanation why. Since I think "painful" should be reserved for things like the animation of 'Clutch Cargo', they just kind of blast their credibility in general with me :)
I could even see giving L*S a 3 or a 4 if you just don't like that sort of humor or think the commercialism is swamping the source material.... but a "1"? That's for if it fails miserably at doing what even fans of the genre think it should be able to do. Ah well.... their loss :)

Oh.
I'm pretty new to forums like this, so I'm not used to lurking/trolling.
o__o
I'm watching episode 12 right now.
"Leftover, you say?
Leftover items still have value!!
Haah!!"
Haha, I love that part.

Haha, that happens to me *all* the time. Often I feel that I have nothing meaningful to add to the conversation, so I just lie low and lurk... though I do try to squeeze in every now and then, just like with this post. :p
Hope to see more of your posts. :)

Lol...yeah, sometimes it's intimidating posting after people like Skane or Sorrow-K, who dwarf your posts with theirs. The difference is especially noteworthy in the series review threads. Admittedly, I like to read well-written critiques, but I don't think most people will care too much about how long your posts are. At least, those who do care probably aren't much better anyway.
Everyone has their own posting style, there's no need to mimic others. And usually, trolls are a lot more obvious than lurkers. At any rate, I lurked for a while here too before finally joining, and have grown more and more verbose with time. >_<

Yeah I get intimated after kj1980-dono posts. Compare to him I know crap about Japan or otaku-dom. But I still do anyway since, hey, it's just a forum about the Most Advanced Form of Modern Visual Culture. Just have fun neh? Y^_^

Y'know, Kagamin has always seemed to be an otaku. She just hasnt realized it til now.:naughty: Why else would she understand most of Kona's anime and manga references?

When was Kagami's first-time at the Comiket? Was it in the 4-koma only?
The 4-koma never shows the girls actually visiting Comiket as I recall (at least in the manga collections), its an anime-only adventure. I don't know if there were any "special" strips in the magazine that weren't included in the manga collections.
The entire convention segment and most of the beach trip activities (after arriving) are anime-only. The rest of the segments are pastiches of original source material extended a bit with anime-only material. And, of course, all mention of Animate Tenchou, 99% of L*C, and the ED is anime-only.
There are particular writers they've used that have produced very good L*S material focused on the characters. I can't say I've entirely enjoyed intrusive anime-only non-L*S features as I watch the time budget tick away on particular manga sequences I had hoped to see animated.

The manga is Papa Nanka Daikirai, before you go download it, a head up, it's H.
(wait a sec, I just thought of something, Konata's mother is dead too right?)

Whoa there...I totally didn't see that coming. :twitch:
One of those days after 10 more years of Japanese experience, I'm going to come back to this and see what I missed.

Cool.. I think it goes to show that KyoAni are made up of TRUE BLUE Otakus who get takes their ecchi manga seriously. Well, the men at least. :)
Those are the kind of placement references I don't mind. They don't twist the source story, don't affect things, but they're there for the very observant.
Nice catch, Temstar.
Sorry for bumping, but that episode made me lol so much when I watched it on Youtube. The anime convention was SOOOO lol-worthy.

By "anime convention", do you mean Comiket? It's more of a doujinshi market than an anime con.
And from everything I've seen, it looks slightly more maddening than any anime con I've attended.

Yeah, thanks for correcting me lol.
