This thread is meant to discuss and share expectations about the special episode of Death Note, announced straight after the end of episode 37.

Source (http://www.animeonline.com/index.php?page=news_details&action=details&id=102438)

Feel free to talk about it. Once it will air, a canonic episode discussion thread might pop out as well.

So i take it this is going to be the one year after part that we get in the manga. Madhouse probably feel it is best to end it with something like that --- doing it for the fans.

It isn't really necessary, but still i'm glad that there's going to be a special episode. I haven't read all the manga yet, so i don't really know what they left out of the story in the anime.

I'm guessing it's going to be a recap of some sort along with new scenes cover the last chapter of the manga. Not totally necessary imho, but I suppose it's nice to have for more closure.

I dont think
Matsudas theory will make as much sense it did in the manga, since Near wouldnt have had Mikami die right there in the warehouse instead of the original 10 days later in prison in the manga.

But yeah, still happy about this special episode coming out. At least we can say Death Note isnt over for good just yet. :D

Endless Twilight, that's exactly what I was thinking about the end of the anime vrs manga.
It would be could to have the one year later - just showing the world going back to normal, and the Kira worshipers (like he had become a God after all) but I felt that whole theory was out of place in the manga anyway.

Well in any case, I don't really care what the special is about, its just more death note! I just wonder when it'll come out heheh.

i would like to think light did some good even if the means was wrong. the world returning back to its original state is really depressing, it makes all those deaths meaningless and light's entire masterplan(and DN plot) meaningless. i really hope they dont show that. the followers praying to lord kira is fine tho :P because in a way he is immortal.

I think it will be a made for TV movie using material from the anime. They could start with episode 1 where everything is set up, use episode 27 where L narrates the events of the first arcs, a postmortem from Mello narrating the last arc, replay episode 37 and then finally give us the epilogue. Overall, the new material will only be equivalent to one episode.

I don't think it's possible for the world to return the same rotten state it was in. Are all the wars that stopped just going to resume? At the end the people who agree with Kira became the majority; the Kira followers are certainly going to have some influence and they may be able to create a deterrent. We'll have to wait for the epilogue to see what happens in the anime. In the manga they said the world returned to how it was before.

Yeah, but it seemed as if the hair colors changed to show when the characters were thinking. Light's eyes would always turn red when he was doing the most evil things. And judging by the looks he was getting as he was laughing, you're not really sure if the others can see it or not.

I want new footage; something not seen at all in the manga. Madhouse is really good at animating sequences not found in the comic. The running animation in the last episode was a great addition. It made the ending feel more epic like it was a journey of sorts.

It would be great if they would animate the "fake ending" of the manga (without the first two pages).

I hope we see what has been said by another member, people worshipping Kira as a god. But what if the public is never told who Kira really was, maybe they leak fake deaths and treat normal deaths as the work of Kira just to keep the public under control and think he's still out there.

I'd also like to see what really happens to Light and Misa Misa as both of them cannot go to heaven or hell. Hmm so many possibilities.

Man I wish the new episode includes this alternate ending material...

First do the epilouge showing Near as the new "L" or whatever, then have him of Matsuda or someone do a quick recap of the best events in the series and talk about how incredible that Light was under there noses this whole time...Do the "How is the world now without Kira?" with all his supporters and stuff and show if the world is better or worse then do this:

For Mr JeburtO and others who haven't seen the COMPLETE "fake ending" that I mentioned previously (also called the "alternate ending" by wingdarkness), you can find it here:

http://www-personal.umich.edu/~onyabear/dn_fake_ending_pages/

It includes the first two pages that wasn't posted previously by wingdarkness.

I don't know how long the files are going to stay there, since I am not the account owner.

It was the last chapter. It pretty much explains how the world is now that Kira's gone, and shows a little ending of how he's turned into some kind of religion

I hope they tell what happened to Misa, Light's Mom, and sister.

I hate to tell you, but Misa's story has already come to an end, as for Light's mother and sister I can only imagine they're in terrible grief, but their love for each other will hopefully keep them from doing anything like Misa.

As for the episode itself, I for one am looking forward to it. I truly love Death Note, but I do question how interesting it can get after absolutely all of my favorite characters have been penned in the dead-book.

Doesn't mean I'm not keeping my hopes up, though! ^__^

The story ends in Volume 12 which includes an epilogue set one year after his death. Then there's Volume 13, a data book titled "Death Note: How to Read" that contained biographies of the characters and came with a card revealing L's name.

I don't think that they are going to make such a big change.

Since nothing has been posted in the voice actors thread about new scenes it may just be that they redid some animation. They could have fixed some of the artwork. They could have enhanced the thinking/pivotal moment scenes in the early episodes with color splashes and 3d movement; As the series progressed they used those techniques more often. They also reused a lot of animation during flashbacks; They also could have animated new scenes for those or handled them differently.

Of course, the extra scenes could also just refer to an epilogue.

Taken from ANN:

Death Note TV Special to be Three-Hour Director's Cut
The upcoming Death Note special broadcast, which was announced during the last episode of the animated suspense television series, will be a three-hour Death Note Director's Cut: Compete Ending Edition special that airs at 8:03 p.m. on August 31 on Japan's NTV. It will mainly be a compilation of the confrontations between the vigilante Light and the detective L, re-edited from the perspective of Light's Shinigami (God of Death) Ryuk. All-new dialogue and soundtrack will be recorded, and scenes will have additional animation that could not be included in the original series.

Interesting!

You can't blame them for wanting to milk more out of the Light vs L part of the series. That additional animation has me very excited, along with the new musical score.

I really hope they add the scenes they cut out of the second arc. I want them to add the first assault on Mello's fortress and the conversations between Near and Aizawa they cut. Also, I really really really want them to animate the manga ending. The anime ending just didn't have the same impact as the manga ending. It was just so much nicer. The manga ending really makes Light face the harshness of the fact that he had 100% lost everything. They really need to do the part where Mikami denounces Kira as his God and calls Light scum. This was really powerful. I think if they could do the real ending in the same amount of time as they did the fake one.

To change that ending would be to ruin the complexion of the anime (They'll never do it)...The manga has it's distinct ending, the anime has it's distinct ending, as does the movie...Each version drives home essentially the same point... the manga's ending IMO is just too OOC for the way the anime was constructed...The anime's climate is just a bit different from the manga (and visa versa)...There is no fake ending, just a more personified one (manga has no color, no music, no voices)...What would make you think they'd do something that drastic? Where's the precedence for something like this? So they are gonna once again change what they already felt they needed to change once again? I wouldn't get my hopes up...

is that alternate ending wingdarkness posted really in the manga or just fan made? That was a fan made ending. The real manga ending is a "one year later" type chapter that focuses on the aftermath of the events of Death Note while leaving an ambiguous ending that involves a "religious cult" that, despite Light's death, continues the worship of Kira.

The deaths of Mido, Shimura, and and Namikawa were kinda sad...especially since I considered those 3 to be the est amongst the Yotsuba members, while I didn't care for the others...especially Namikawa, and then Shimura. Damn it's 3 hours..I guess my question would be how many new scenes will there be?? Director's cut usually always suggests never before seen things (However it may just be the whole series condensed which I would not be happy about if that's all it is)...I'd love it if they have more intimate moments as far as Light plotting things or talking to people while other important things in the anime were going on...By the sheer volume of content though I don't expect to be watching this for atleast a few weeks if you know what I mean...

Looking at this, I just feel terrible. At first I considered Light to be evil, pretty much ignoring all the friendship he made with L when he got the Death Note back, and killing anyone who stood in his way or were no longer of use to him.

Then I thought about how Near said the Death Note was the most deadliest weapon, then I hated Ryuk for bringing the Death Note to Earth and would only do whatever gave him the most fun, once the fun ran out, he would take the Death Note and leave.

Now seeing this, I wonder if the Death Note doesn't turn people evil, more like gives them a way to use that evil. Everyone who used the Death Note quickly became evil, but good people like L and Light's father never even bothered to use. Then there's Rem, who only used the Death Note to help Misa since Jealous couldn't.

Still I get to see this from Ryuk's point of view, I wonder if he may have regret about what he did. Have to wait for the subs and find a good piece of my schedule to watch it.

Watched it raw, what little dialogue/monologue there is in the extra scenes is easy enough to understand. It was a nicely done 2hour recap that's nice to see instead of resitting the whole series.

I'll put my synopsis in spoiler tags, check only if you've seen the special episode, are not planning to watch it, or if you're wondering whether you should watch it, or are willing to be spoiled :p

The special starts with an extra scene in the shinigami realm, where a shinigami we never saw in the series goes and asks Ryuk what was so interesting about his visit to the human world. He seems excited about it, and offers Ryuk a shinigami world apple in exchange for telling the tale. Ryuk accepts the apple, though complaining that he wanted a juicier one, and starts telling the story.

Most of the special is scenes from the anime, though many of them are skipped and slightly changed to make the flow seem natural. Skipped scenes include Light testing the note, the busjacking incident, Souichiro's heart attack, and many more.

Also, L never approaches Light in his college, instead he calls Light and tells him to come meet him. This is the second extra scene. Light meets L in a strange complex, where he has to go through secret doors and finally find L in a small theatre. (The place is quite a mystery, it's never explained where/what it is.) They greet each other, and L makes Light watch the clip where Misa tells that she wants to meet Kira and hints about "shinigami" and "the eyes". Light is fairly shocked, but mostly maintains his cool before L who observes Light's reaction without trying to hide it. :D

Light then joins the investigation and the story continues with anime scenes. The boring parts of Yotsuba arc are passed quickly, Light goes just as planned, Rem kills L, followed by an extra scene, L's funeral. The investigation team and especially Light swear to continue to hunt for Kira and avenge L. Light stays at the grave, others leave. Ryuk complains that there won't be anything interesting to see anymore. Light starts cackling maniacally and taunting L's gravestone, and after he calms down, he says he'll show Ryuk the genesis of the new world now that all obstacles have disappeared. Screen shifts to Light walking away in a very good mood, proclaiming that he's become the god of the new world, and the deaths of Yotsuba members Mido, Shimura, and Namikawa, are shown. (all die by accident)

In the shinigami world, Ryuk ends his tale and shows the name Yagami Light written in his death note. Not a perfect translation, but it goes like this:

Ryuk: Back then you weren't a god, but rather a...

*Ryuk looks away from his death note where the other shinigami was listening, but there's no one*

Ryuk: Gone, huh...hehe.

*Screen shifts to the new shinigami walking down the steps to the human world portal*

Ryuk: Go ahead, if you're lucky some amazing person will pick up the note, and you'll be able to see interesting things you'll never forget. Isn't that right, Light?

*pan up to the pale shinigami world sky, the end, credits*

I don't like that Light became a shinigami, after all that he did in the end he got what he wanted, to be a God. I wanted there to be more severe consequence for using the Death Note. Especially after thinking when he dies "Well he's going to nothingness, he paid the price." It just kinda kills the whole impact. I liked how the anime differed from the manga in that only people who use the DN go to nothingness, now it kinda seems like using the DN would be a better thing.

Wow, if what was said in the above spoiler is true, then I must say that the anime has truly dissapointed me. I loved the manga's ending of all people going to nothingness when they die. Turning Light into a shinigami just kills the whole point of that. Well, as far as I'm concerned, that ending is non-canon to me, if its true.

Oh, you guys... :heh:

I find myself hard-pressed to believe that Ryuk's last line in Jaden's synopsis is inferring that...

...the Shinigami walking down the path is Light.

If Light was the Shinigami, then he wouldn't need to leave the Shinigami World; instead, he'd just remain there sitting on his ass the whole time, enthusiastically writing on his little notebook like the nut bar he is. After all, why lend your killing toy to a mere mortal who would most probably fuck up like Mikami did when now you can carry out your personal Holocaust on your own without ever putting yourself in the way of danger?

When Ryuuk says: "Isn't that right, Light?" he is probably just using Light as an example for the kinds of "interesting" things that can happen when the Death Note is in the hands of a human. Yes, the use of second person addressing makes it seem as though he is talking directly to the Shinigami, but since he is at a distance too far away for the other guy to hear, I'd say that it's safe that Ryuuk is just talking to himself, reflecting on his own personal experiences over the course of the show.

So no, I wouldn't say he's addressing him as "Light."

Too bad, though. I must say it would have been kind of sweet had it been the case... in a childish "FUCK YEAH!" kind of way.

In order to die, Shinigami needs to kill to protect the life of someone he cares about. Whenever the guy lays the smackdown on crime, I don't really think the intent is to protect the innocent as much as to kill the criminal. If the show has been of any indication, then my guess would be that the word "care" has no place in Light's vocabulary; he has shown absolutely no objection with innocent people left and right dying so that he could further his own ends. :/

So, in the end, Shinigami Light would really have nothing to worry about... unless the laws in the Otherworld decrees that he can't do the whole mass-killing thing.

Urgh

Light doesn't become a shinigami. The special episode changes nothing. Ryuk's just babbling to himself when he says "Isn't that right, Light?". The new shinigami obviously isn't Light, he's just someone who wanted to hear Light's tale from Ryuk and got intrigued by it. Sorry for misleading.

I think the writers wrote it like that to leave it open to interpretation to whoever watches, that way it really satisfies everyone this time around. You can either think he was mumbling or you can think he was talking to Light. It really goes either way and personally I think he was talking to Light :D

If they really wanted to be clear cut about it, they would have changed it to something like "Light, you learned this the hard way, and now you're gone" or something. But clearly the choice to make it ambiguous was done as a conscious choice, we know how clever the writers have been all series long, it wouldn't make sense for them to not pay attention to what the characters are leading the audience to believe suddenly, in the very last line of the very last episode.

They have made one, though it's not an episode in the normal sense of the word, since it's over 2 hours long. It's basically a retelling of Death Note with a few new scenes and alternations. The L only thing you're referring to might be the life-action movie about his past, as far as I know, there are no plans to animate it.

Death Note never ending? I wish. :heh:

It's mostly old material, though, but the episode is done well.

I don't think anyone would want to see Death Note end...but Light dies...so basically if another Shinigami were to drop another note it would be the same...it would get boring...Now if Tsugumi Ohba has some kind of change of mind and deciedes to keep the story going, and Takeshi Obata would agree to do the art again..Ohba could write into the story(To avoid someone else getting the note) after the last chapter when Light dies and be all like....*Starts off with Light waking up in the Shinigami world right infront of the head Shinigami personess thing...* Then the Shinigami personness thing is all like "YOU!" and then Light is like "ME!" The the Shinigami is like "YES YOU! Out of a twist of fate you have not completly died." Light replys "What are you talking about? Am I a Shinigami now?"
The lead personess starts to laugh "Not quite......You are not a Shinigami...and you are not human...you are not dead, and you are not alive." The Shinigami says, "What?" Light asked confused...."You see....Before you died you were shot....alot...and the Ryuk wrote your name down in the Death Note...Now the rules is that no matter what, if your name is written in the note, you will die how it says to die...Now Ryuk only wrote your name down...Leaving you to have a heart attack..but you didn't just die from a heart attack, you also died from the wounds of a gun shot...so you were killed twice...Because you died like this...in some strange event...you have been given an extra life....."...And then it could go from there, or something like that....Then it would make it soooo much more epic and awsomes..wouldn't you agree?:D

Well, Ryuk stated that the user of the Death Note can go to neither Heaven nor Hell, Then in the live-action movie, he said they go to a place called Nought. Now, I for one have no Idea what Nought is, so I would assume it's a place like "Limbo" or perhaps "Nought" could be non-existence, so bassicaly their soul is just gone and doesn't exsits...That is what I'm thinking, but it really could be anything.

Well..Not if your being tourtued, it'd be hard to talk to people...I honestly would choose not....Most people have hard times thinking of this because they don't know....If Nought in general is non exsitence...It's hard to image what that's like dew to the fact you can't imagin what it's like because it's not like anything..It's non exsitant..If it doesn't exsist you can't think of it....I have a way of looking at things in a different way xD so I've told people this and they tell me (and this has happend alot) "Well...Teleporters don't exsist and yet people have thought of them, explain that!" They don't realize that most people think if it doesn't physicaly exsist it's not real, making it non-exsistant....but they had a thought of a teleporter, making the idea real, making a teleporter it self exsist...Then some say, well we think of non-exsistant....Again...they over look things...Yes you can...See, but a teleporter, you know what it does..you can tell people what it does...non-exsistant...you can tell anyone what it's like, or what it does..because you simply don't know....Getting kinda off topic...xD But yea...I honestly think I would rather choos Nought

Hmm...did Light become a Shinigami...

It is probably not supposed to have a answer but I like to think of Light becoming one. Ryuk was bored of the shinigami realm and said it was boring. It had NOTHING to do. Ryuk is not the most clear person in the world but he probably didn't want to mention that to Light anyway. Light must have lost his memories, that is why he would to 'mu', nothingness.

Whether he became a Shinigami or not is irrelevant. If he really did he
1. Lost all his memories of human life.
2. Now has to abide by the rather strict Shinigami laws that prevent going to the human world for very long.
Either way his crusade is over.

Anyone know what the exact title is? Or is it just called Death Note Special Episode?

It's called Death Note リライト・幻視する神 which translates into Death Note Rewrite: The Visualizing God'
Also, the title is a bit of a pun. "Rewrite" is "riraito" in the Japanese title. And, as some of you most likely know, Light's name in Japanese is "Raito". Riraito. See?
It's supposed to be like from Ryuk's perspective, though it really isn't for most of it. It has scenes that for some reason or another didn't make it into the anime, or alternate scenes.
If anyone can read Japanese, I sugest reading about it on the Japanese Wikipedia. There isn't much info on the English one, but the Japanese lists some of the scenes that weren't in the anime and is over all more informative.

Not gonna happen. The creators of the manga anime and films never had any intention of Light ever winning. He's wrong in all their eyes. The world of Kira will never exist because the creators don't want it to. Accept it. Light will not have a happy ending. My biggest argument on the Light becoming a Shinigami is this: What if that world of "nought" that Ryuk was reffering to was the Shinigami world? Either way, I can't prove it. Just wanted to add the thought in though.

I'd like to see a new Death Note franchise though. It doesn't even have to be in the same universe. Just use some new characters. : P

why... there might be an extenseion to the mello Gevanni shower scene :)
