I personally like how KyoAni actually fleshes out the episodes, like creating the two insert songs for Live Alive. For those that did not read the light novels.
In the novels, Tanigawa only describes Haruhi and Yuki's playing skills
And of course the space battle for The Day of Sagittarius.

And of course the space battle for The Day of Sagittarius.
You got to thank Full Metal Panic's author, Shoji Gatoh, for that. He wrote the script for that episode.
I'd like to think that KyoAni would like to create a quality anime, and not just rake in the cash.
Maybe wistful thinking but who knows?

KyoAni isn't making quality anime?
Well, the people above are saying 'I guess KyoAni would rather make moeslag and make the same money than haruhi s2', so I was just refuting that.

K-on is a moe manga. So KyoAni made a moe K-on anime. A job is a job. And K-on's target audience is happy enough.
By the way, I found the backlash against moe online to be terribly childish. Especially since it is mostly people complaining about the existence of anime that they weren't even the target audience for.
(As a comparison, it's like someone who hates mecha anime complaining about there being "another Gundam, why won't they stop making them! I hate them, so Sunrise should stop making Gundams because i said so!")

Just because it's not intended for me doesn't make it baseline trash.
Just sayin'. It's a very shallow show.

Since we are on the topic of K-on!, I have a question. I have been thinking of trying it, but if my favourite anime are Haruhi, Monster, Ghost in The Shell, Ouran and the like, would I like K-On?
Maybe.
There's really no way to predict. I liked Lucky Star, but a lot of people who loved Haruhi (and the other stuff I like) hated Lucky Star.

I loved Haruhi, but Lucky Star is only above average for me. The characters are definitely very moe, but the plot is really lacking.
Then again, since it's a slice of life anime maybe I shouldn't have expected any plot from it.
As for K-on!, I guess there's no harm trying one episode, eh?

2009-05-17, 07:32
K-On is like Lucky Star but without the humor.
Or at least without the funny humor.

But... it'd be okay for someone who likes the genre to complain about the never ending line of Gundam shows, right?

It's not what they make, but what they make of it. To me K-On has just been too bare bones moe antics and ambitionless so far and it's like with each passing episode it actually gets less involving and more a parade of the girls working their same old gags and moe quirks that they've had going on for the past 7 episodes. Yeah maybe that's what it's aiming for, but that still leaves it in the realm of average to below average from a critical point of view such as my own. Heck I'd like to think even the slightest inkling towards a critical POV for K-On would lead one to see it somewhat as wasted potential. There's so much more they could be doing with the characters and premise that I've made note of at every turn. This is something Haruhi did quite frequently, it had some layers to it's moe overtones that give it a little depth. I didn't find it as stupendous as a lot of people did, but I won't deny that it was about and showcased ambition, thinking outside the box and a hint of cleverness in how it presented it's sequence of events, even if some aspects were essentially gimmicks. Even then like Haruhi herself it was as if the series would come up with an idea and then said, "why settle just for this? let's augment it with this because it will make things more interesting". Not so with K-On.
People seem to have somehow attributed this taking things further and thinking outside the box to Kyoani over the years, but if you ask me it was strictly a Haruhi thing that relates to this series spirit but that somehow mistakenly got associated with the company thanks to the show's high profile. To me though when it comes to Kyoani as I view it seperated from it's adaptation's and as a business I think of but two things, playing it safe and catering to moe crowds. Anyway, that's my two cents.
Since I've noticed a lot of mecha fans doing just that, I suppose so.
The thing with Gundam is that either the series are additions to existing timelines that add to the lore and character histories, or they are reimaginings of the franchise and it's core ideas, sometimes ever so slightly, but often significantly such that it keeps things interesting. 30 years and the franchise is still going strong thanks to it's ability to reinvent itself and keep the imagination of both the creators and fans working. Of course then you have those fans that are deadlocked on an idea of what Gundam is supposed to be to the point where they won't accept anything else but a Gundam series that subscribes to that set of ideals. Those are probably the "fans" you are seeing and I'm afraid they don't have much of an imagination.
I loved Haruhi, but Lucky Star is only above average for me. The characters are definitely very moe, but the plot is really lacking.Since when did Lucky Star have a plot?

Well that's partially because they aren't particularly skilled when it comes to originality. One deviation from a script could be really unfortunate.
I would just like to say that I don't get that hard work vibe from anything Kyoani as of late or even that they are really trying to apply themselves. More like find what moe trends are popular on 2ch, find a manga, game or light novel that contains those popular moe elements, take it and toss it out there. I would almost be tempted to argue that the reason we haven't seen another second Haruhi season is precisely because it would be too much of a challenge and investment and that they can pretty much make the same amount of money by doing something like K-On anyway.
Au contraire, mon frčre. I see KyoAni's recent outputting of simple, low effort anime as evidence that they have been making Haruhi as well, on the side. As a company who for the first time is about to start handling multiple notable products at the same time, are you going to aim for two monster projects, say, Haruhi S2 and FMP S4, or are you going to take it a little easier to make sure you can put all proper effort into one major project while churning out more low effort product that will still rake in the dough?

Do you have any evidence or a theoretical basis to back up any this? Where is it that you are getting that they are going to start handling multiple "notable products" at the same time? What constitutes notable? What makes you think that this is their modus operandi?
Wistful thinking.
However, it is a valid theory, in that it has about as much evidence backing it up as your two cents does.
There is certainly a suspicion that Kyoani is working on a non disclosed project.
From the FMP sub forum: http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?p=2390870#post2390870
Takemoto Yasuhiro was the director on Haruhi-chan, Churuya-san, LS and FMP TSR.
Haruhi S2 is the most likely suspect for this project.

Common sense. If you're going to be a successful company you need to get to a point where you have multiple streams of income. If you make anime for a living, that means you strive toward working on multiple series at a time.

Watch if it actually does end up airing that a lot of people miss it because they think they are crying wolf. Why no active announcements from any official sources. It airs on other channels. If they don't have those channels, there's the Kadokawa Youtube channel.
14 channels plus Youtube...spread out over the course of a week or two on releases. Someone will know about it and if they missed it the first time, they can find in again on another station or Youtube the following week.
Plus once it airs, the buzz is going to be overwhelming if just the rumor of it even being produced over the last two years can generate huge waves of data.

Troll answer: for the lulz.
Simple normal answer: the listing is wrong.
Elaborate answer (1): they wanted the "second season" to be as much of a surprise as the "first season" was.
Elaborate answer (2): they "cancelled season two", read: there is no second season and only The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya with new content, making the series a little more up to date with the light novels. ...Though still behind.
Bonus troll answer: For more songs played on the world's smallest violin.

Personally I still don't get all the hype and beating around the bush like this season is the second coming of Jesus. Every show has it's fans, but the way this whole project has been treated still just strikes me as silly and unnecessary. Although:
If they can manage to do this and put forth an ending scenario that actually makes sense to me unlike the novel I will have said that it was worth it by the end.

No he's right, they're probably having to give the stations release times for organizational purposes but as stated earlier they've been trying to put the kibosh on the stations publicizing a release schedule. So when refering to air times, the Streisand Effect is being quite accurate......not that otaku everywhere weren't fiending for any information they could scrap up anyways.
If used in reference to the entirety of it all, it does hold less water as Kadokawa has done an impressive job in preventing information leaks so far. It's almost enough to make the secret services blush.

So this is what an Information Explosion looks like. If I'm Kadokawa-marketing I'd like to keep it under wraps all the way til midnight 5/21, but guess other stations have truthful obligations to the audience to contend with. This should be it. Because false advertising = class action no matter what country you're in. Now this does feel like a New Year's countdown.
Administratively I propose we bump this Board to Current Series, and immediately open a new thread for the Third Season of Suzumiya Haruhi. Ahahahahahaha........

It depends on whether I bring my ipod with me/if I bring enough Twizzlers to barter with whoever is hoarding the computer at this retarded camp, if there's even a computer/wireless internet that I can access.

Religion is based on the foundation of faith. Without faith, religion collapses.
If Haruhiism is considered a religion, then Haruhi is to faith as house is to foundation.

Seriously, Kadokawa? I mean, really? Why do you have to be such a damn bitch?
If there's no second season soon, I swear I'm going to find some people who can draw and write and direct, and just make a fanmade second season. It'd be godawful and full of key frames, but at least I'd know it existed.
Unless I was having some sort of existential crisis, but I don't think anime would be my first priority in that case.
Pessimism and optimism are both banes to human existence so I more often than not just can't give much of a rat's ass unless it's an absolute certainty and would rather focus on other things in my life.

In the meantime, this is a fascinating look into how an entire fandom can delude themselves because of one tiny line of text on the website of a relatively unimportant television network, that was later removed the same day.
It will be even funnier when Mysterique Sign airs later this week and the entire fandom explodes.

This quote from the Drama CD (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nf6iScKvFPs) sounds appropriate right now:
Haruhi: "We can't let it end like this!"
Kyon: With wide shining eyes, and hands at hips, Haruhi stands majestically. There's a reason why she's so pumped up. The SOS Brigade's activities as of late have not only erased previously unfavorable international opinion, but become a frequent topic of conversation and even led to a so very slight increase in popularity. Which is why it would not be a stretch to say that Haruhi is currently the woman of the hour..."

I get the strategy now, they have made the die hards so desperate for new content that they will not even care about the quality at this point so long as they get ANYTHING! This by far beats Bandai's strategy with Gundam and the whole "No new series planned for the anniversary.....ohhh wait....NOT!"
Well that doesn't work on me. I am curious to see some new Haruhi anime, but that doesn't mean I am chomping at the bit. We shall see what comes this following week, but we shall be aware of Kadokawa's game and shall enjoy the fun and the game, having not been a victim in the so-called trolling and hype, but having greeted this like any other Summer 2009 series. Who cares?! Whatever happens happens, and frankly I think people are well within their rights to be annoyed at all the drama Kadokawa has created over this potentially new Haruhi content. There's really no reason for it. Sure they are geniuses for creating buzz out of overwhelming negativity, but it's still very likely that there are going to be unforeseen repurcussions that come back to haunt them should the new episodes air without any sort of advance notice.
This kind of reminds me of back in the day when those new Dragon Ball Z episodes aired after ages of reruns and everybody in my school was only aware of it about 3 episodes in. Oh those were the days.....albeit without this level drama.
I just hope people have considered that if these episodes do indeed air in chronological order with regard to the series then there are going to be gaps between the new episodes and that it's going to almost certainly be wildy inconsistent with regard to animation quality among other things. Consideration......hmmm........now I think I might actually be getting ahead of myself. :heh:
*Looks at post above* Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh my............ :uhoh:
For your convenience (and my code integrity) I have a little Microsoft Excel spread sheet calc going to tell me how much time's left til 5/21/09 01:00:00 JST.
So, starting from A1 and going down {notes on the side}
=NOW() {function for the current time, should give something like 5/17/09 21:31}
5/21/09 1:00 {hand enter, the supposed first airing time of BLR}
=TIME(16,0,0) {this is the offset between your time and JST. So for me Pacific Daylight Time that would be 16 hours. Enter accordingly.}
=A2-A3 {this will display BRL airing time in YOUR TIME. For me that would be 5/20/09 9:00}
=A4-A1 {this will give you the time remaining from now til BLR. With the correct formatting it may display in hours like 59:28:46, which is little less than 2.5 days.}
So yes in less than 60 hrs we'll be saying either (1) FUCK YEA, (2) oh shit, or (3) Nice Boat?

I've got to tip my hat to Kadokawa. They finally sent us some hints, via Haruhi-chan, but they weren't via the ED this week, but via the final ep last week.
--Yuki starting off her portion of the non-sequitur at the end of the episode holding up a Haruhi "product" and saying "It's done."
--The "Obvious Disappearance reference is obvious" eroge version of Yuki, complete with Kyon saying "Shoushitsu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Disappearance_of_Haruhi_Suzumiya#The_Vanishmen t_of_Haruhi_Suzumiya) da!"
And the kicker...
--The date showing on the "Asakura Route" CG being May 24. Not the first date the new episode will air, but the date that was "accidentally" leaked.

It's Haruhi. Whether or not fansubbers are caught surprised by a second season, there WILL be quality subs within two weeks at most.
If they don't have to sub the OP or ED (since it should the the same one they've been using since 2006), they don't have to worry about any sing-a-long scripting...just the episode itself. That is if they can do it at all.

There's already a group subbing the reruns. I'm not sure if they are using raws from the DVD release or new raws off of the actual reruns. I believe the only difference would be the reruns have no previews. I guess they could just cut off the previews from the DVD raws.
Even assuming no one is making raws off the reruns, the first new material is still four days away. Assuming they miss that, there's a showing the day after. If they miss that, there's a showing the next day. And the next day. And the next day. And the next day.
Subbed episodes could appear as early as Friday night.

I've saw it just now. Mori = November 1. Arakawa = April 20.
In Haruhi-chan episode 25, Yuki made a visual novel using the Haruhi characters. Asakura is one of the girls you could go after in the game. We were shown a scene that is presumable from the Asakura route and the date in the corner was May 24.

Oh psh, we deserve to know all the dates now. I think we pretty much at one point felt really tricked.

3. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part III (Aired)
4. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part IV (Aired)

9. Mysterique Sign
10. Lone Island Syndrome Part I
11. Lone Island Syndrome Part II
12. Endless Eight

14. The Sighs of Haruhi Suzumiya Part II
15. The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00
16. Live Alive
17. Day of Sagittarius
18. Someday in the Rain (This episode wasn’t in the novels, but I still think they’ll keep it in)
19. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya Part I (Again, assuming this has 5 parts)
20. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya Part II
21. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya Part III
22. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya Part IV
23. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya Part V
24. Charmed at First Sight Lover
25. Snow Mountain Syndrome Part I
26. Snow Mountain Syndrome Part II
27. Where did the Cat Go?
28. The Melancholy of Mikuru Asahina (would be a nice cliffhanger for a third season? xP)

The old fansub group release a new episode so regularly it's like clockwork. I hope it will be like that for the 2nd season; I prefer a good sub rather than speedsub, as long as the good sub has a stable weekly schedule.

Those of us who have read the novels could probably watch the raws and understand every sentence, what with KyoAni's habit of sticking to the script. Naturally it isn't an option for people who don't want to spoil the story early by reading the books, but I am just making a point that for some of us, watching the raw is quite acceptable.:)

If you're looking at the Gigazine site, it certainly says May 24, which is obviously Sunday, but as far as I know, all the broadcasting space they bought was for the Thursday slot. Once again, who knows for sure.

Still, the German dub of Haruhi Suzumiya is one the best I have heard so far, it's just sounds better than the English one (especially Kyon's voice seems to be much more appropriate). The prices of the DVDs just fail over here though, as suppose that they are produced in very low numbers.
Sadly, this is an exception for anime, the German dub of Slayers is just.... ughhh (mostly bad translation, they even translated the spells into German that were English in the Original Japanese dub!!!! FAIIIIIL!!!). The English dub is pretty good, though there were some major changes of voices actors from season 1 to 2.

Thursday is the day of the first Japanese TV channel to broadcast the upcoming episode (Teletama? was it?). It wasn't them who spilled the news.
It was TV Wakayama (if I'm not wrong, and their time slot is on Sundays.)
Japanese TV stations broadcast the same thing over several days over different channels.

Japanese TV goes from 400 to 2800. 400=4am same day, 2800=4am next day. Why do they do such a thing? It makes it very clear when "midnight friday" actually is among others.

But it has been proven that the Streisand Effect can make anything spread like wildfire. It costs nothing compared to marketing the traditional way.
Look at it another way; to trigger the Streisand Effect, you just have to try and block (unsuccessfully) people from knowing what you WANT them to know. Curiosity and the desire to uncover the truth will take over, and soon everyone knows about it without spending a cent on advertising.
It's like the "don't touch" sign that you had to touch. People will want to know what they are told they aren't allowed to know about.

Wow that's great so when do we get to see a sub version? In 1-2 days after release I guess?
Whenever a subber group finishes with it. Since they probably won't have to do anything to the OP or ED, they should be able to get it out in a day or two if they are orginized already. If not, it may take four days to a week.
Also if every group thinks someone else is going to do it first and no one does it, it could take longer.
I do wonder what policy will be followed here, since this broadcast is of a licensed show, and yet not licensed, since they didn't really seperate the seasons if they do it like this, but is the new content covered by said license?
Japanese TV broadcast time. For the people who watch late TV broadcast, the notion of today and tomorrow is lost, or so it'd seem :heh:
1am of the 20th.
When they list something in the post 2400 hours range, do they list correct date, or do they list the previous day still? (May 21st at 2500 hours would be May 22nd at 0100 hours nomally)
Thus what is the correct way to read a post 2400 hours listing?
May 21st 2500 hour = May 21st at 1:00 am.
or
May 21st 2500 hours = May 22nd at 1:00 am.
(I'm assuming the later as it makes more sense)

You guys are just going to confuse everyone arguing over the 25:00 May 21 versus 1:00 May 22 thing. Let's make it simple for the majority of the posters here.
For the initial showing of episode 8, "May 21" on Sun Television at "24:40" local time in Japan:
Time in Houston, Texas, USA (NA Central Daylight Time, GMT-5):
May 21, 10:40am (10:40)
Time in Vancouver, BC, Canada (NA Pacific Daylight Time, GMT -7):
May 21, 8:40am (08:40)
Time in Sydney, NSW, Australia (AU Eastern Standard Time, GMT+10):
May 22, 1:40am (01:40)
Time in London, England, UK (British Summer Time, GMT+1):
May 21, 4:40pm (16:40)
And there we have the times for spots in each of the four major English-speaking countries, which I would assume (considering all the English speaking around here) should cover most of us. For anyone not in those time zones or near enough to figure it out, I've given the GMT info so you can figure it out.
Of course, you can always just go to this site (http://www.timeanddate.com/) and see the current time in Tokyo, Japan, and figure it out yourself like I did.
EDIT: Okay, missed Team Rocket's post...

My feeling is that the second season is genuine, and I suppose the story would be more coherent overall if it's integrated with the first season.
What I don't get is exactly what Kadokawa is trying to accomplish with all their secrecy and misinformation. Because it's Haruhi, they can get away with it, but why bother in the first place? It's only going to hurt the franchise.

Who cares about Mikuru? I want to see Yuki. :p
Well it creates a huge amount of hype and fan discussion without Kadokawa really have to pay for any advertisements themselves. They can just slip little bits and pieces of information into places and the rapid fans (us) tend to lap it up since we're so desperate for anything regarding the second season. Posting this has made my optimistic view of the second season coming slightly more jaded.
I was skeptical of S2 episodes in-between the rerun of S1 because it would mean Kadokawa being more concerned about being clever than giving the fanbases (rabid and casual) a good shot at actually watching the darn thing. But these little games with station listings and coverups sounds rather Kadokawa-ish and gives enough lead time for the hype machine to do its thing.
So I'm looking forward to seeing BLR this week, even though I'm prepared for Mysterique Sign to air instead.
But what I'm really, really, REALLY hoping for is that new episodes will bring Strato out of fansubbing retirement.

Where Did the Cat Go?
New episodes italicized.
Sighs could either have two or three parts, depending... Snow Mountain only really needs one, but they did two for Lone Island, so... Alternatively, they could combine Where Did the Cat Go and Snow Mountain together, and leave the last episode for the prologue of Intrigues, which is chronologically before Melancholy of Mikuru, in any case.
In fact, they could easily combine the Intrigues prologue with some anime-original content to stretch it out into a full episode.
I can't remember the song, besides that I liked it. The opening seemed really classy, a lot of use of black - I remember that it was really classy.
The title card was totally fake though and I remember (upon waking) that what had been written on the card was a) romaji and b) the wrong romaji.
That was probably the "Suzumiya Haruhi no Seitenkan" version of the episode you saw.
Well, my opinion is that it's some sort of Tsundere style marketing (with extra emphasis on the tsun).
That or they decided to just imagine how Haruhi would market it if she was in charge.

Crispin Freeman is pretty gold though
Honestly, aside from the narration in Episode 00 and his reactions to Mikuru and almost being killed, I found his portrayal to be rather weak.
How about Kyon x Yuki? You hate it?
haha that would be just too cute xD
the imagination about them being lovey-dovey is too funny hahahha xD
I think it would be the most unexpected/funniest and cutest Kyon X whoever xD
It would be one-sided, unfortunately. Kyon seems to think of his relationship with Nagato as more of an "older brother" kind of thing.
Not that it would outright prevent anything happening between them, it just doesn't seem like it'd really be all that romantic of a pairing.
My list is probably the most accurate one. Apologies if that sounds over-prideful.
Nah... you're probably right. Though I'd still prefer another anime-original story to be thrown in.

Well, I have always thought that the direction Yuki's development going is "Humanization", so it's kinda possible to me.

The second season will not be posted on youtube am I correct? Instead it will a Japan home-tv broadcast? OR online broadcast?
If they follow their original posted schedule for the releases up to now, the new show will be on Youtube for about a week as well as on 14 Japanese TV channels over the course of two weeks.

Just curious, does this mean that S1 and S2 (or extended S1 depending on how these new 14 episodes count) will cover only the first four books and does that leave any material for more future anime projects?
(I haven't read the books yet.)
That covers most of the first six books if I remember correctly. There are presently nine books with a tenth known to be planned.

And even if there is further material, it'll probably take another 3-4 years before a third season will be released, if ever at all. :heh:
And we'll have to do this stupid dance ALL OVER AGAIN

Wait, youtube has direct downloads now if you subscribe to the channel am I correct? So the subbers will DL the video then sub it? But is that not copyright infringement in a sense?

Yes, it's possible to directly download mp4 video files from Youtube, but it's not something Youtube would like everyone knowing. Also, any potential subbers would use higher-quality raw video files taped directly from Japan. And yes, anything that copies copyrighted videos without consent is technically copyright infringement. But that's an argument for another thread. (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=951)

YAY!!!!!!! i heard about this eariler today this is going to be amazing awsome lmao im sooooo excited!!!!!
I asked this question like 10 pages ago and nobody answered so I'll try asking it again. I don't know if this is against the TOS or not, but is there a live stream for the TV channel on May 21, preferably for VLC?
Also, what are the chances that Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody will have a new opening and ending?

KeyholeTV can be used to watch some Japanese channels. I'm pretty sure it's legal but I'm not sure if it gives you access to one of the May 21st channels.
Edit: And we have no idea if there will be a new opening or ending.
