Yeah, first to post !

I will say, after 37 episodes, Light and L are my favorite Death Note characters. Their mental showdown was just magnificent : Light is a demonic genius and L is a cute genius with very strange methods.

In the first part, I truly admired Light, but in the second part, I though he became a pure larva, a bastard corrupt by his power who no longer has the same noble ideals he had in the first part. But in the ending, he really realised that his perfect world collapsed and those noble ideals came back...

L was a very complex characters. He was fun, funny, adorable, kind of weird, but always heartwarming and fresh. But in the end, was made him so different from Near is that Near would follow a hypothetical way, while L wanted proofs and concreet facts. In other words, L was just... too intelligent Oo

+1 for A LOT of cult quotes from him :

"Even though I eat so much, my brain cells consume everything and I can keep a 50 kilos weight."

"When I sit properly, my reasoning capacities decrease by 50%."

I love him, simply.

I voted for L, he will always be my first choice, no question about it.
Aside from his stunning intelligence and deductive skills, he has an odd aura of charisma to him.

He's horrendously attractive, I scare myself even thinking about him. His peculiar habits are all too adorable. It is safe to say that I was awestruck the first time I heard him confront Kira.

I could go on and on, but I'm sure there's another topic where this is more suitable.

However, since this was multiple choice, I also opted to include Mikami. His sense of justice was very distinct, and seemed stronger and more pure than the ideals Light kept, at least before acquiring his Death Note.

He did stray from his path and enter a psychotic dementia after being appointed the duty of executioner, but that did not diminish my fondness for the character.

The look in his eyes when he was performing his lord's work reminded me of Alucard's bloodthirsty eyes, which also sold me over.

I could easily have added Light as well, as I do like, and even agree with, most of his actions. However, I just could not accept the way he treated Misa throughout the series.

She offered him nothing but absolute devotion and love, and he sought to end her life as soon as he lay eyes upon her. As I'm sure you all know how it turned out, you'll understand why I cannot include Light. Edit: The death of Naomi Misora was also one of pure evil, "go somewhere where your body won't be found and kill yourself."

Light is #1 without doubt. His choice to become Kira instead of having a long, prosperous normal life was enough to buy me out. But of course becoming the god is impossible for a human. He went quite far, though, was indeed able to change the world a little, and will be remembered for a long time even after his death. I doubt that Light regretted his choice even in his last moments.

Mikami's #2, he's simply awesome. He did everything with style and shares Light's zeal. The way he lost his death note was stupid though and that's the reason he's second to Light.

L is my favorite anime character of all time, so yeah he gets my vote. He has everything, he is unique, charismatic, intelligent, funny and despite his oddness and unrealistic and exaggerated character design, still comes off as a very human character, which is where Near failed.

I also really liked Light... never bothered to think about whether his actions and methods were morally and politically right or wrong, regardless of that, he is still a fascinating character.

Mello is awesome too, ambitious, reckless and hardcore, when he appeared you knew you were gonna get something good. Plus his fashion sense is the best in the show, god those were some awesome coats he had. :D

Those are my top 3 in the Death Note, but I still like some others... Ryuk is entretaining (which is funny, because all he wanted was to be entretained), Matsuda is mostly comic relief but still manages to make me root for him, plus he has that badass moment in the final episode, and Misa is a good character too, interesting contrast to have a dumb blonde (well she still has her smart moments though) in the middle of those two geniuses. :heh:

Biggest disappoint to me was Mikami, awesome when he first showed up, loved his backstory and his "Sakujo" and "Kami!", but in the last couple of episodes he went too psychotic for my taste.

L - I like simple characters that does'nt have that much detail, but has THAT appeal and character development plus the way he acts is weird, but hey it's funny and stunning at the same time. 1st time I saw him was the Live Action then the manga then the anime. I really like his design and that even made me buy an L cap.

N(Neer) - one reason a silly little boy that is L's counter part. Ever since L died I hated DN for killing such a cool character, good thing L's replacement N was good enough of a character to be almost in his level.

L will always be my fav character from DN but I still voted for Raito and Rem since I voted for them the first time around too. Rem is still my fav shinigami :D
Mello, Matt (though I was very disappointed in his lack of screen time) and Mikami also got my votes. I liked anime!mello alot more then manga!mello and Mikami + Death Note = love!! Ive never seen someone love their job that much :heh:

but omg poor misa she got my vote because at end light dies and that would break her heart witch would break mine *sniff* (she is so cute). i would have like to what happen next episode or even movie lick with FMA but instead they just made...... a movie that is the anime series but put into a hour and half... i suppose there wouldn't be much to see in 'what happens next but oh well. to far off topic eh :p sorry for that neways MIAS IS CUTE!!! she gets my vote

I will repost my reasons to dislike light here (from other thread), as I think is relevant to the thread.

Let's see what he did through the series:

- Aiming at small fries- (This one I think it is the autor's mistake, because it is not shown as an issue in manga/anime). Kira only killed criminals shown in media. It mean he only killed people arrested or known by media. So he couldn't kill unknown criminals (like most active criminals and criminal masterminds like himself).

- Badly aiming criminals He judged people just by seeing media, not by reading minds or deep investigations (It mean every people framed, unjustly arrested, or committing criminal acts to save other people being killed). It is almost like having death penalties without trials. And note he judged people using only his own corrupted Kira's sense of justice.

- Killing innocents without second thought or remorse Anime/manga DID shown he killing and making people kill too many innocent people. He even hand his book to the 1st greedy person out there for few months, just to misguide L. And he killed anyone trying to get him, even when it wasn't necessary anymore (Like when he deceived Ray Penber to think he was innocent, waited a week and then killed him).

- Enjoying killing- EVEN when killing innocents, he enjoyed his power of taking lives and not ever once lost a night sleep for it. He even mocked most non-criminals he killed. (Ray penber, his fiancee, and L, for examples)

Also I noticed most people think he was different (not murderer) before getting Death note. It is even suggested by Near that he lost his senses to Death Note and Death Gods, and after his downfall it shows how he was before the Note.

But I disagree. through the story, in Light's thinking, it clearly shows that he always wanted to be a policeman just to execute criminals. It is why he quickly start to use Death note in the 1st place. As stated by Ryuk, he never saw before a human putting so many names in so few days. Actually, it is even a pivot to his plot to bring L down. As he himself explained, he erased his own mind from Death Note because he KNEW that he would try to hiddenly find kira before L to kill him, having high chances of him getting the Death Note before L.

I am putting this explanation in my opinion and my observation, which could be wrong...

For the first two - it does show that MOST (not all) of the time he researched on the criminal before killing. He does not have mind reading powers to detect the mastermind criminals though...so he accessed police info and media

For the last two - it is a fault in his character...i agree with what you say. He killed L, Ray Penber and his wife because they were in 'his way' and he pretty much enjoyed it.

Light was not like this before the Death Note. He wanted to be a person to make a better world and punish criminals...most police wants to do that. But the idea suddenly changes to HIS world or that he is the god after he begins using Death Note

Light is my fav character not only because he is the hottest [in my opinion] but also because of how smart he is now no offense to L fans but Light had to be a detective and a killer so he had to act lyk he was doing what L was doing and still kill all the criminals which would be hard work. So L could just say whatever he wanted but Light had to always be careful and he had to tell the truth in a way not to be suspected which would be hard. L is really smart n funny but he is a bit weird lyk the way he sits n holds a phone but i guess that is individuality which is really cool but it is really funny to whereas Light has good n bad moments but is still always awesum there is just something about Light that you cn't help but fall in love with him. It worked for me lol!

Ryuk told Light that he would put his name down in his note at the end of his life at the very start of the series. He merely dropped the note to get some entertainment, he never cared for Light at all.

Bingo. I thought Yagami Raito deserves to die...:p no offence now to the fans of Raito-kun but he killed L :upset: so....:heh:

Well, when I entered this thread, I gave it a second thought of who I like, and came to the conclusion, that when L died I was so sad, I mean, I did NOT at all expect him to die so early, but thought it might happen at the last episode (in this case, 37).

But when Light died, I was not that sad, I mean the last part where he goes so much pathetic, I never imagined him like that. Episode 37 changed everything.

by the way, it's kind of sad that you don't see L's real name :p (at least not in the anime...)

I found Light respectable in a few aspects. What most especially intrigued me was that he originally intended to go as far as to sacrifice his own humanity for the greater good of mankind. It really takes a lot to do something like that, especially knowing all the things that could go wrong (and they did.)

Although Light seemed to have a really nice idea on how to reform the world, it was essentially, like many other kinds of "new world" plans, flawed. He went pretty far to accomplish his goals, and that's a kind of persistence you don't see too much of nowadays. He ended up going a little too far, though, and that's when his ego came to play, and that's what lead to his ultimate downfall. Because of all the factors involved with losing sight of his goal, I find it somewhat understandable that Light eventually retreated to his ego.

Light is really a case of "so close, yet so far", but since he managed to get as far as he did and attempted to hold on to his ideals to the very end (despite those ideals becoming a little deformed by the end,) I'll give him some credit and my vote.

A tough choice, but I'll have to say L. His fearlessness and determination in attempting to unravel the mystery of Kira made him one of my all-time favorite anime characters.

Light would be a very close second, for his uniqueness. But he was just too demented for my liking, and too obsessed with establishing himself as a god among humans as opposed to creating his perfect utopia.

Well then, looks to me like the L wins. If you ask me, there should of been a thing up in the poll for both Light and Kira. To me, they are 2 different peopls. Light was cool. He was the smart intellegent teen who was kind and stuffs. Kira is just a phycopathic killer who thinks he's preforming justice when all he is doing is the same thing as the criminals, commiting a crime. He took into no consideration that perhaps the person was innocent, framed, etc...(This is my opinion).

hmmm... At first, I considered Light the ideal guy. Handsome and smart. But then he started to get psychotic and... yeah.
I really liked L. =]. Not at first, but then I realized how adorable his habits were. Then... I decided that L was way better then Light.
Near & Mello. Personally, I liked Near better then Mello. Mello was kinda scarey IMO and Near was cute with his little toys. I still don't understand, is Near 12 or something older? I'd assume he and mello would be the same age, but Near looks so much younger.
Rem & Ryuk. Ryuk just never appealed to me. He's like a character that needs to be there, but doesn't. Rem, well, I felt bad for her.
Teru. He's like Light, just not as good looking. Psychotic, and crazy.
Matsuda. I liked this guy! A bit of an airhead but very likeable. =]
Takada. I think she's stupid and she should've known Light was using her.
Misa. I think she's alright. She's probably smarter then she looks and I feel bad that she doesn't remember what happens at the end.

I don't like L, because he's such a big liar. I realized that myself + confirmation from the author's interviews LOL... When L told Light that "Light-kun is the first friend I've ever had" << that's a big lie, in fact, L never trusted Light; he secretly doubted Light until the very end. And when L put someone under surveillance, he must have suspected him more than 90%, but he told the police that he suspected Light only "five percent" !

L and Light are my favourite characters. It is extremely hard for me to choose between them, but I think if I had to decide, I'd choose Light as my favourite character..
Misa and Matsuda bring comedy to the anime, which definitely had me laughing. I loved it.
Plus Matsuda totally changes in the last episode to some bad-ass guy telling himself that he must kill Light. That scene was one of the most amazing things EVER.
Ryuk is my favourite Death God. He's funny, interesting and just generally an awesome character.
I voted Yagami Soichiro because he's a kind, loving, family man who always did what was right. He's a character impossible to hate.
I voted Mikami because he's just so cool and insane. He refers to Light as God and says Eliminate every time he kills someone.

I admired Light because despite he's still in high school, he has a dream of becoming "the god of the new world". Even though he failed, but I think he succeeded to recruit a bunch of followers from all over the world! Domine Kira!

Talking about L, He's such a weird guy with genius brain. Well, I choose him just because of his weirdness and his habit of sitting. He's unique and cool.

The last but not least, I choose Light's father, Yagami Soichiro, because I can see the "real" justice from him, not Kira's or the other's justice. A "perfectly loyal" character.

edit: crap i forgot to vote for Kiyomi Takada, she was a really mature character and deserved more screentime, Misa isn't so bad but she isn't a great person. she does add to the story tho. also Rem is really cool though too, that story he told to misa about the shigami dying made me cry lol

also i always felt light was more ready and intelligent than L, but L is still awesome tho.

It was L at first, but for some reason, Mello (and then Matt) really interested me. He wasnt a natural born genius like the others, he worked hard to get where he was. He was a bit extreme, but some of his feelings were pretty normal (for the most part)

And his song, "Mello's Theme", just captures him so well <3

Light & Ryuk complimented each other so well throughout the series. Its the reason why they are my favorite characters. It also was a sad and symbolic moment when Ryuk finally wrote Lights name down in his Death Note.

I never really liked L, I thought he was cool because he is weird but he never really figured out Light's goals. It kind of shows Light is actually smarter than L.

Towards the end, Light profess that everyone are just blind servants of the law. Including L. Their goal is to catch Kira who they consider a criminal but in Light's view, his work helped the world prevent more crime than the ability of the criminal justice system. Light thinks people like L and the police are useless at preventing crime.

Without Light, the world would be the same, bad guys always escapes the law. With Kira there was a systematic extermination of criminals.

The problem with Light was he got too careless sometimes and L easily figured out it was him. Mikami was a better more efficient Kira but he was a fool.

My favorites are Naomi Misora, followed by L, then Misa Misa, and finally Light though. I personally like Naomi Misora because she is an intelligent person who has a passion for justice. While she falls into Light's trap, she was a rogue factor that would have drastically changed the playing field, even to the point that L WOULDN'T have died and Light would have been caught almost immediately, had she lived.

I voted for pretty much everyone. Light is my favourite Death Note character in the entire series, for being an evil phsychopath with a God complex (But that's just the fangirl in me), but managing to remain a realistic character; he is brilliant yet in some ways stupid, stupid enough to think that it's possible to make the world into a perfect place. His flaws are all realistic despite having impossible intellegence (But that's another thing I love about him), and he makes human mistakes.

Misa and L are my two second favourite Death Note characters, Misa for being fascinating and tragic, and having such strong emotions, and in general, she has amazing emotional strenght for being able to live the things she goes through and managing to remain that purity and cheerfulness of hers. She's crazy as well, but not phsychopathic, she's smart in some ways and stupid in others, but not freakishly brilliant like most characters, and she is just amazingly strong- most characters, had they gone through what she had, would have become very angsty characters, but she didn't. And then there is her undying love and devotion for Light, which is an intriguing part of her as well.

I also believe that Misa is rather smart but doesn't show it; you cannot be stupid and a good actress, but I think that acting is the area where Misa is most intellgent, and 'dumbs herself down', for the lack of a better description, on purpose, because it sells easier and is how she messes with people's minds- I think she didn't show her true intellegence near Light on purpose to mess with his mind and earn his trust, which worked.

I admit, I never liked L all that much in the beggining, but he started to appeal to me as the series proggressed- I love how flawed he is, how he is an odd person to represent the 'good guys'; he, I think, is smart in many, many ways, smart enough to understand that you cannot make the world perfect, and basiaclly 'white' when compared to Light, yet he is not above torture and killing people to reach his goals. He represents that there aren't actual "Good" and "Bad" people in Death Note, that everyone are 'Gray'.

Almost everyone come third; I loved Matsuda most after chapter 74-76, don't remember exactly which, where he questions if Kira really is evil or not, and especially after when he shoots Light; it shows that from everyone, he had the most hope and trust in Light. Besides, It's always nice to see another side to the cute one.

Mello, Near, Mikami are all awesome, and I love Sachiko as well; she, too, is a strong character for living through experiences that must be veru painful for her, and I also love all the girls in the series.

There's not much to say about L, not only he his one of the most interesting characters ever created, he's incredibly likeable. I loved every one of his quirks, you can only grow to love them even if they sound incredibly odd in the beginning. I also love the fact that he is very intelligent and uses his skills smartly. Heck, for some reason he is the best detective in the entire world.

And Mello, because... Well, he's so freaking hot. It sounds vain, I know, but if there are people here voting for Misa just because she's cute, I may as well be a girl. :heh: For real, I loved his personaliy and overall his impulsiveness. Also, he turned to be very faithful to his principles, and I found his competitiveness quite alluring. And that scar only adds to his personality.
Also, he has a love affair with chocolate. How cool is that?

Well, I think I'll explin my choices:

Light Yagami: The one Anime character I most admire (Excluding Dio Brando, but that's another story). I wish I could emulate the intellect and ambition of Light. Not to mention his cold-heartedness in achieving his goals.

L: He's just so wierd! And don't forget his occasional Dark side. He can be quite ruthless when he needs to be, and I love that trait in a character.

Ryuk: What can I say? The ending cinched it for him, though. He never lied, and acted for the sole purpose of his enjoyment. I liked that about him. Ryuk knows what he wants, and goes after it. No pussyfooting around.

That's exactly why I like Ryuk that much myself. I don't have a problem with evil characters, I often end up liking them, but I cannot stand hypocrites who want it both ways. Light sort of ended up falling into that category towards the end, but I consider him an exception to the rule, due to the awesomeness he delivered throughout most of the series.

Well... L did a great mistake when he in the get had "Kira" as a friend. In the end he trusted Yagami Ligth. But i liked how he did everything... Well i currently seen hole season 2... took me long time to start with it, the end in Season 1 was much better than 2. BUt the end i season 2 got me nearly crying because how idiot in the end Ligth could be. He screamed: I WON! and that's why idont voted for him. If they died... All of you who say that he's an hipocrit and that what he did was wrong (although it kinda was since he had long lost his track by the end of the series lol) but none of us can't rly judge him.
Imagine yourself gifted with the most incredible item of the world, one that allows you to change the world, bring peace, end with murder, end with crime, end with everything that is wrong with our deeply flawed world... would you man up, pick it up and do your best to save humanity from it self? or would you let the chance of making our world a whole better place just go by, because you were to afraid or unwilling to carry the weight of your actions?

Raito chose to become the ugly dark face of a god, who stands still whatching us go to hell, and used his power to free the world from crime. He actually succeeded, crime was diminishing, he had, in part achieved his goal and made the world a better place. How many can say the same as him? Now, and I agree with you guys on this, there are some bad moments in his life throughout the series, he got insane at times, and he started to loose his touch with reason as time passed by; he wasn't after all, the right person to save the world, he was flawed, weak, he was human, he was just not ready. And you saw who he was before getting the death note, I don't think anyone could be more suitable to carry the death note. I think that one of the things the author wanted us to think about after reading the manga or watching the anime.

"Maybe if L got the book" will probably some of you say... well.. if L got the book I dont know what would happen, he probably would destroy it somehow even though he knew humanity its killing it self through crime and war.

Well in the end this is just a "Does Kira have the right to kill people???" argument VS "He is just getting his hands dirty, requirement to get the job done, to make the world a better place" argument. from time to time even I think he was wrong but I rly liked him as a Character no matter what many may say ^^

L. I love how logical he was, and his personality altogether, his wanting of solid proof, and even not giving up when he had nothing to go on! He's seriously superb to me! I just love his character! He also loves sweets, which is sweet! He can be funny at times, and completely random, and his fighting is well.. a real kick! xD

Light. His genius captured my favoritism from the very beginning. His upstanding for justice, and everything. I loved it all.(Although I think there technically should be "Kira Light" and regular "Light".) He was a gentleman of sorts, and it may not seem like it, but he actually cares, but the greed of the Death Note overshadowed his judgement.

Misa Amane. I love love love her! She's so adorable, and never gave up on true love! She's actually shown her side of intelligence, and was the most important female character in the series!

Ryuk. He made things super duper interesting! I love him, he was so funny! And his love of apples, I LOVE APPLES! ^.^

Sayu Yagami. I don't think she gets enough credit at all. All of these other characters are in the show, but Light's own sister couldn't play a hugs role in it. I don't think she truly got a chance to shine like she could've. Anyway, I loved how adorable she was. She was just so cute, and her voice matched her perfectly in my opinion!

Teru Mikami. Aside from the fact that he's one of the smexiest characters on the show. I loved his religious attitude, and loyalty to Kira. His character personality was amazing, and "ELIMINATE!" was also a good feature for him. I love how crazy he would get when writing in his Death Note, just one of the many things that I loved most about him. Unlike most people, the last episode didn't change my thoughts on Mikami. I beleive it was more Light's own fault that he was caught. His arrogance, and bragging about winning was his downfall. There were some ways to ensure that things could've been different in the end. Mikami was only trying to do things with complete surity, I don't think he deserves disrespect for that.

I find Ryuk to be one of the most entertaining characters for sure. I even prefer his Japanese over his English voice since it sounds more whacky and funny. His apple addiction, his curious attitude and his subtle dissing of Light and the generally interesting relationship he had with him make me love him.

He and Light are such an awesome team. A pity Ryuk basically vanished from the series after episode 16 :P

Yeah Mellow was pretty badass, and he was also smart as hell. He was different from the other geniuses because he was pretty violent, and seemed sadistic - which made him interesting because he was different from the L's and near type of people. L is still my all time favorite though; noone can replace him. It was somewhat annoying that near somewhat acted like him because I was already upset about his demise - it felt like they were trying to replace him.

L was very special and I liked him. Without DN wasn't that exciting anymore, but to be honest Yagami was my favorite character. He is very similar to me. ;)

Light is the only one favourite of mine. When I first watched Light Yagami on screen it was as if a dream had come true. He was/is the anime character that I had always wanted and anticipated to watch: a really evil youth that acted as an ordinary young male although was demonicly evil at a godly level. He evilness was represented brilliantly by his red eyes and evil grins, and also by the fact that he could kill people with no change of expression or anything as if it were a normal thing. Then there was also that scene where he was walking down the corridor with the thunder in the background, and such. His evil smile and his insanity are just amazing, he is one of the best anime characters to exist.

L was my vote. After he died I literally stopped reading the manga. I own all 12, but all I did was look to the back to see what happens. He ran that manga ; )

Only where anime is concerned. Otherwise I am a just simple, ordinary college student that goes to parties and enjoys cross-country running with colleagues. No...I do not possess a Death Note, before anyone thinks to ask. I understand that Light took this approach too.

Meh I enjoy heroic heroes that I can get behind totally as they dispense heroic but forgiving justice on the forces of evil while I get all warm and fuzzy on the inside. All this moral ambigousness of stuff like Geass and Death Note I can't really get behind for some reason.

I must not be jaded enough or have enough frustration in my life.

Individually Light and L don't appeal to me much. One's a tad too idealistic and the other has weird mannerisms... but together in a battle of wits they were just too awesome, so I voted for both of them.

L has to be my second favourite character ever. i loved his personality and his quirky habits. i haven't read the manga, but certain scenes in the anime made me laugh. he's definitely one of the strangest anime characters i've come across ^^'' i quite literally screamed at the tv in a mixture of rage and disbelief when L died. i wished i could jump into the anime at that moment and just wipe that smug look off light's face =.= sadly, i don't think near can ever hold a candle to L. he might have had some of the same mannerisms and habits, but it felt like a weak imitation of L.

Aside from his accomplishment as detective. I like his

I have watched till episode 25 and so far my favorite characters have been Light and L.

Light seems to be the pure evil kind by now but that's the reason I like him;). and L is really interesting.

Well not too just point out the obvious to everybody but of course L and Light Yagami/Kira are going to be the top two favorite characters; they are the only characters that are complete opposites - yet share so much of the same skills. Now it is pretty self-evident that I prefer Light over L. Really, it is because all through out the series Light proved to be the dominate character, more intelligent and had way more of the advantages. Really, to be honest both characters had no idea what Justice really was and I believe many Philosophers would agree with my claim as well. Nonetheless Light/Kira vs. L was a perfect example of two well-known debated topics of the natural law and positive law.
