Being mute would actually help me. I don't particularly like talking to people anyway and even got fired once for not being communicative and in touch with the rest of the project team (I would keep my desk phone off and skip the more useless meetings among other things ^^) even though I did good work. So anyway, an excuse to be less communicative would be great. ^^

I have a question though, do deaf people talk to themselfs in sign language in thier head? or for those who can read lips and can talk (of course they dont sound perfect, they just do the best they can with forming the correct articulatory gesutre) do they talk in thier heads even though they dont really know how language sounds like?

Just as Dragon Flame I have also been "blind" for some time.
It happened while playing soccer at school.
I was trying to stop one of the hardest kicking kids who had the ball.
When he was about 1 meter away from me, he tried to kick it past me, but the ball hit me in the face/eyes with full power. X_X (No black eyes though)
Because of the blow and sand in my eyes I couldn't open my eyes for a couple of days.
I.e. when I tried to open them it was blurry and it hurt like hell.
So for a couple of days I couldn't open my eyes.

Anyway, I think this thread is kind of pointless.

Not being deaf I can't say. However, it is not impossible (http://www.rnib.org.uk/xpedio/groups/public/documents/publicwebsite/public_keller.hcsp) for someone who has lived without "hearing" sound to be able to learn to reproduce those same sounds ~ and hence think in terms of the vibrations needed to reproduces them. Basically the same as "talking" to yourself internally?

The same potential limitation applies to being blind from birth, of course, only to a much greater extent. Thinking in terms of pictures quite a lot myself I imagine someone who has never "seen" would find it an alien concept -- more so than with sound. You can at least feel vibrations even if they are much less defined...

Still, it is an interesting question. Its commonly believed that language is a key to learning; without it the mind doesn't develop as quickly as it might... without being able to think in terms of a language the person is likely to be very restricted. However; language isn't limited to sounds; I'm sure it is possible to think in terms of any or all of our senses...

Err, to answer the question -- I'd probably pick mute too. I have lots of alternative methods of expressing my opinion and communicating with the world; voice is only one of them.

Being mute is indeed the lesser of the three evils. I'd choose deaf over blind, but only barely. Music is as important to me as the other forms of recreation, It's the need to function in everyday life (like crossing the street relatively safely) that makes me choose sight over hearing.

You know, in long trips, my brother and I used to ask each other questions like these. Yeah, the small one is right on that one. There are people with no sense of touch and one of the big problems is that they will pick up something not knowing it's scalding hot, hold on to it for way to long and get serious burns with infections. Plus, if it matters to you, sex would be impossible.

I have to agree about being mute, I'd just get one of those talking boxes Stephen Hawking has where you just talk like a robot.

Without your sense of touch, you won't be able to do very much anymore. Did you ever experience that your legs went to sleep and you didn't feel them? You aren't able to walk normally without the feedback from the legs, and you couldn't even take a glass to drink something, because you couldn't know when you completely have grasped the glass . I think the sense of touch is the worst choise of all. I guess the most dispensable sense is smelling/tasting.
well well, it doesn't bother me that much when i don't feel my legs to use your example.
btw, i realized i lost the sense of touch on that finger because i didn't feel the warmth of the water. then i touched the right side of the bath mixer tap (hot side) ... it didn't feel hot (~70°C)

so by just being careful, this is not imo as annoying as losing the sight or anything else :o

... Plus, if it matters to you, sex would be impossible.

It's too difficult no matter what I choose, because:

Deaf: I could never hear my mother's voice ever again, the sound of birds chirping, or a beautiful sonata composed by one of the "greats".

Blind: I could never see the faces of my loved ones and never know what my children looked like. I could never see the Cherry Blossoms fall again or see a sky filled with stars.

Mute: I could never sing again or make casual conversation with my friends. I could never tell a funny joke or recite a poem.

Mute, because being mute would have the least impact on my life. Blindness would be the worst choice from the three, as it makes you unable (or atleast it makes it very hard) for you to function in today's society. Being deaf is definitely a large hindrance, but vision is still the most important of the senses for humans.

Anyway, these questions have always been and will most likely forever be pointless as nobody(barring the exception that proves the rule) gets to choose what disabilities they have to live with.

I'm sorry for your fiancee's loss. I suppose this thread is to be taken with a measure of seriousness, because there are real people suffering a loss of either, or more. So sorry.

As for me, if I could choose, I would want to be mute. It will be very very hard communicating, yes, but at least I can still facilitate communication with sight and hearing.

Alternative choice: I'd pick sense of smell. Sure, I can't appreciate fragrant things anymore and food may taste a bit bland but it's not really gonna hamper my life. Plus I could lose a few pounds. Not detecting smoke or poisonous stuff is bad, though.

But you don't have the option of becoming a super hero if you don't choose blindness. Just make sure you walk near industrial waste, often.

In that case blindenss is the way to go, imo

(and if you're a guy you don't really have to worry about getting a hot girl... she's just got to be a bit lumpy in the right places and its all good)

Mmm, that's a mistake everyone makes. Listen to blind people speaking, and they'll tell you they're sort of happy because they can communicate with real people. Deaf people are usually much more depressed and sad than everyone else. Believe me, I know about that. That's why someone like Ray Charles helped was a big donator to deaf children, not blind ones. I remember him saying, when asked " Why do you care about children who can't hear more than children who can't see?". "Because I know what being blind is. And still I'm a happy man. Deafness is the real tragedy."

So, Lady Yanami : I don't agree, vibrations are nothing, when you can't get the sound.
