This is a new live-action version of the manga, which just started last week on the NTV network. A group calling itself Littlix (http://forum.littlix.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=249) has announced plans to release hardsubs. They've already released a beta softsub of the first episode. There was also a two-hour special last year (in Hollywood, they'd call it a "back-door pilot") with the same cast. A softsub for that is available, if you know where to look. ;)

The show stars Kamiki Ryunosuke (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Kamiki_Ryunosuke) as Kyuu and Shida Mirai (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Shida_Mirai) as Megu. Both are already veteran performers, even at their young ages. Kamiki Ryunosuke's resume includes two Miyazaki films, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. Shida Mirai burst onto the Japanese drama scene in The Queen's Classroom (Jyoou no Kyoushitsu), which won her the Best Newcomer prize at the Japanese Academy Awards. More recently, she was the star (playing the title character) in the series 14-Year-Old Mother (14 Sai no Haha).

I really liked last year's special, so I've got high hopes for the series. :D

So is this going to cover the same ground as the anime?

I've never watched the anime. I picked up this show because of Shida Mirai.

The first two episodes have been softsubbed now. I won't go into details about the individual cases, but here are some general points:

There's an organization called "Pluto" that's up to no good, and Ryuu is connnected to them somehow.

Dan-sensei is getting the Q class involved in real cases because he "doesn't have much time left," whatever that means.

Kyuu is the only one trying to get the Q class to work as a team. All the others see themselves as a group of rivals competing with each other to become Dan-sensei's successor. Although Megu does seem to end up working with Kyuu on a regular basis, despite her protests that they should be rivals.

Megu has unusual connections to the police force. Specifically, she works at her older sister's "maid cafe" (she's in her maid costume the first time we see her - what is it with the Japanese and maids, anyway?), and one of the requisite police buffoons is a customer - and a fan of hers. Megu seems to like wearing costumes of all sorts, actually. She also has a problem dealing with dead bodies, since they will stick in her photographic memory forever, whether she likes it or not.

Does any of this sound like the anime or the manga?

Uh, kind of and kind of not. Pluto is in the anime, but its existence only becomes a plot point at the very end. The manga does go a lot further (and might still be running? I'm not sure). Initially I was wondering if the LA would make it to the part of the manga that the anime never got to. Either way, it sounds like it's moving a lot faster. It takes quite a few anime episodes to get the whole class together, and Ryuu's connection to Pluto isn't hinted at until deep into the second half.

Sounds like they changed a lot of stuff about Megu. :heh: No maid cafe in the anime; no police connections, either.

All that stuff was covered in the two-hour special that ran a year ago.

Shida Mirai is the best underage actress in Japan atm.
No need to argue, and no one comes close.
Just check out 14 years old mom,
and you cant believe that's a 13 years old actress playing such a role.

Oh, absolutely. Although I also like Tanimura Mitsuki, who appeared with Shida Mirai in both 14 Sai no Haha and Watashitachi no Kyoukasho. Maybe she'll do a guest shot on Tantei Gakuen Q as well!

Anyway, to give an update - softsubs are now available up through Episode 5, and the raws are available through Episode 6. No hardsubs yet, though. :( I'll say something as soon as I see one posted.

At the end of Episode 5, Dan-sensei showed up at the Q Class's HQ, saying he's going to tell them everything about Pluto. :uhoh:

Uhm...why is this thread still in "Unaired" ?

Great casting with the Pluto guy, he's seriously rather scary looking and have that "not quite sane" feel about him. Good find.
And the kids are a cute bunch.

Also, as i begin to get deeper in the dorama world i get quite scared. 1,3 GB for measly 1 hour video ? Are those guys nuts ???
It seems no one cares to re-encode that ghastly DivX bloat.

Not really. Basically they skipped the introduction part, and chose their stories from all over the place. For example first episode mistery is the same as in anime, island part. Episode four, the mistery is "borrowed" from...i think it was Kindaichi. Two and three werent as recognizable.

Because it hasn't been released in a hardsub yet.

Yeah, I recode a lot of the stuff I download, just to save space on my hard drive.

The first episode has now been released on hardsub! Check the main AnimeSuki index for tracker info.

And if there are any mods passing by... can you move this thread over to the "Fansubbed" forum, please?

Edited to add: How the heck did I manage to put that thumbs-down symbol there...?
