BTW, just spoke with ashibaka, I will probably be getting with him to do this series, and I already have raws of episodes 1-6 (all that's been aired so far) and a full staff (though many are novices, and the translator is MIA, hence working with ashibaka).

So, hopefully things will work out with ashibaka, and you'll soon be seeing more Mujin Wakusei Survive, aka Uninhabited Planet Survival for those of you who want english titles.

Watching the first episode, I thought this show had potential for something big. After watching more, I decided this show was more of a "okay to watch, but nothing special".

The furry robot thing (can't remember its name).. yeah, it had potential too.. but its character development leans towards being your stereotypical sidekick pet, more than the "cool handy fuzzy robot that can actually be usefull" that I thought it would be.

Runa is the main reason I watch the show. Her and the magic water. Also, every episode I hope that they BBQ Howard.

Well, since this obviously has no thread of it's own, I thought I'd kick one off. So far I'm really enjoying this series. Not entirely sure what to think of all the charecters. But overall I'm liking it quite a bit already. Plus 2 thumbs up to WeSuck fansubs. You guys got some kick*** quality. At least that's my opinion. :)

Anyone else seen it yet? Whatcha guys think of it?

I have been curious of this show for a while. What is the story is all about? I have looked at animenfo but the description of the story is vague. "We Suck" just recently subbed episode 3. So Raiden, if you have seen all the subbed episodes, what is your take on it? You can spoil me.

WeSuck are doing a great job pickin up series and shows I've never heard of... I wasn't sure of this show when I dl'd it... but then again I wasn't sure of BPS either and I got hooked on that....

I've just watched the first episode... the show takes place in the future with like space colonies and other stuff like that... and the main character seems alright as well... I thought it was an alright show from the first episode and I'm lookin to watch more of it... it's definitely fillin the void left by Stellvia with all that futuristic stuff...

I haven't watched Stelvia, so I don't know what it's about, but if you are expecting Survive to be sci-fi, well, it's incredibly far from being sci-fi.

I really don't think this should be a spoiler since it's in the opening sequence, but anyway..

They get stranded on a planet, and the story is about them surviving on it. The only thing mildly sci-fi is the magic water

Also, if you don't like slow moving, or hate non-action packed anime, or require very deep (angsty) characters, this series is not for you.

and i really enjoyed watching it so far.

I cant really tell why i like it :heh: , I think its just nice Comedy with a bunch of cool Characters :)

I like it because, while it seems like it may be aimed at the younger sect in Japan, it's got an innocent adventure vibe to it that we don't get to see in fansubs very often. I like it for a lot of the same reasons I like Planetes and even GTO. There's no giant robots, no lame ass fanservice, no mahou shoujo, or silly bishounen. Just a bunch of cool (and not so cool) kids and a seeminly interesting story. Looking forward to more.

And major propers to We Suck for picking up this series. It was picked up by a bunch of smaller groups who only got an episode or 2 out, and We Suck comes out and get's us 3 and 4 like they were on a mission. I hope they stay with this one.

I just got through episode 4. The show is a kid's adventure about a class trip gone really wrong - to the extent that a small group of kids winds up on an apparently uninhabited planet - well, once they are there, "uninhabited planet" is a misnomer innit. The kids more or less do not get along with each other, but they will have to if they want to survive their little vacation.

This show has nothing SFnal about it - this is a classic Japanese theme (the word for "group harmony" is wa) which could have been set anywhere. In fact it seems that an ecological/technophobic theme will emerge in the middle of the series.

I notice that Madhouse (Card Captor Sakura, X Movie, X TV and many more) is involved in this production, which accounts for at least some of the satisfaction people seem to be getting from watching the show.

I also gotta give props to WS.

I'm enjoying Uninhabited Planet Survive a lot. And that blonde guy you all speak of, Howard, is actually remarkably effective (full credit to Ishida Akira's performance--Nagisa Kaoru from NGE). He is much more likeable than the written role might have been.

I watched all 4 eps yesterday, I love it so far. I'm not sure what it is about it, I like the art style and it just seems a bit different from the norm. And yea, Howard is not exactly a sniper. I'd fill up his water bottle with salt water, let him have that. :D

Menori is the only one as pale as Howard.

With regards to Howard..

If something goes wrong, it's Howard's fault. You can always blame it on Howard.

At least for the first 11 episodes, I dunno about the rest since they haven't aired. If Howard's character doesn't develop in the next 3 to 5 episodes, I'm going to lose all hope for this series. I do believe they will expand Howard's character eventually though.. as I've said in the other thread, they seem to be filling in background information for each character now, and having the character grow with regards to it.

But I agree with others in this thread, it's a nice anime with none of the typical crap you find in anime being thrown in.

BTW, the girl with the glasses does get better (more tollerable), you'll just have live with her for a few episodes.

It's not just you. Her voice actor is beyond annoying. I guess it fits the character. Not the annoying part, just the sound of the voice fits her I guess, but it doesn't make her any more tolerable to listen to.

UPS is extremely clever. I shall be inventigating this as the series gos on, but I am now thinking that UPS is VERY sublety poking fun at everything by making err "small" changes to the character, as allthough they do all fit into cliches they are....
Luna = Can do ANYTHING and is the nicest person alive
Koworu = Is TOO badass
Howard = Is WAY over the top, even for his character type
(Note: Howard >>>> you all)
Menori = Is over the top in her "cool" factor
Shingo = kinda sucks
Beru = I almost forgot this guy. He's so stupid and weak minded I think they shoud just leave him in the shuttle PERMINANTLY. Put him under one of the seats. Actually, wait, he's good cannon fooder/survival rations
Shara = her "inocent" and "weak" image is played somewhat on the side of either "wtf!?" or satire by her deep, older sounding voice, which makes her sound like a MAN.

And yes it was Howard who... pressed the button...

Howard > Chakko > Koworu > you all > Suck > Bush > Macdonalds > Shara > my hair > Beru.

I like all the voice talent, even Sharla since everyone is "ragging" on her.

The woman behind it is Kishita Naoko and this is her first work according to animeinfo. It's a nice cast for a shy girl because she sounds like a real person, not anime-shy. In fact, I challenge each of you to like her character more if she was high-pitched and cute and not able to take care of herself, which is the only annoying thing I'm seeing.

She'll get stronger--living on that island and all.

You get a nice long look at that hand, and it is Howard's skin color. The only other character with a similar tone is Menori, and Shingo isn't even close.

Hmm, I just checked. I swear I remember a shot of Shingo bumping into Howard and Howard pressing the button. So there's no way to tell. You can go on skin colour all you like, but looking back on this there's no point in reveiling who pressed the button.
It could have been Shingo, as I didn't see the launch button on the right side of the cockpit - where Howard sits, but that doesn't mean much when it comes to anime...
The hand looked kinda small, like Shingo's, but as I said there's no way to tell, and it's meant to be like that too.

BTW, this relatively early "Gizmonic Institute" release is courtesy me. The translation is by me, and subpar; I think I may have made a few major mistakes. If you are bothered, I will not be offended if you choose rather to wait for the "We Suck" or "Anime-Blitz" version, which will likely have much better quality. Patience is a virtue for all leeches! ^_^

Ok, woah. I just watched 5. At the part at the end where the cut open the fruit the "ding" sound from when you level up in EverQuest played and I laughed my ass off! Any other EQ players out there recognize that (former player here)? It's pretty unmistakable if you've ever played the game. It was the exact same sound. :)

Apparently they have the raws "up to 11 already processed and ready to go (pre-process filters done, to huffyuv)"

They admit that it's not the best quality. They also stated they also apollogized for making A-B mad. They said they're not suprised seeing as "Blitz is a quality group"

So like I pointed out before A-B doesn't know when to be quiet. I personally would suggest downloading the Blitz version for archival purposes. It is of higher quality, WS even admits it.

I got exactly the same idea the first time I watched UPS hehehe :D

so far I´m enjoying so much the series because it´s different from most things out there in the moment (or at least different to the other series I´m watching :P) I like variety and UPS seems up to ep 6 a very well told story, they didn´t hurry up and let the characters into this unhabitted setting, we actually see where they used to live during 2 eps. I know it´s early to say but I know I´ll keep on watching all eps that come out for sure ;)

Also, his exact quote is "Blitz is a 'quality' group." Take those single-quotes as you will. Natuarlly, none of(edit: fixed typo) the members of We Suck could be in any position to judge the absolute or comparative(edit: fixed typo) quality of the Blitz releases on account of how our watching them would compromise our ability to make our own version objectively.

Furthermore, as any of you who have visited our torrent page or our blog (http://we-suck.blogspot.com/) are aware, we release our scripts in DVDSubber format when the official R2's for the show are out, in the hopes of encouraging fans of the show that it is worthwhile to purchase them, since they will be able to make full use of them. The scripts we release are reviewed for errors which we didn't catch the first time, and seeing another group's translation would prevent us from objectively making such corrections.

Also, your statement that, "We admit that it's not the best quality," was a misinterpretation of our statement, "We do not pursue quality at all costs." We admit that we have made errors in the past--we have issued errata to many of those errors on our official site, for that matter--but that does not mean that we think that each and every one of our releases is of low quality, nor even that any particular release was of poor quality. I also don't feel that we have released something which we did not, at the time, think was the best we were capable of.

I feel very pleased with the quality of our releases of UPS, and I enjoy taking the time out of my life necessary to help other people enjoy the show as much as I do. I do not, never did, and never will view our rapid release schedule as an attempt to challenge or embarrass any person or group. I simply hope that by our efforts we will create more fans of the shows we sub, and that those fans appreciate the efforts of the artists who create them enough that they will see fit to buy the official R2 (or R1, if they get licensed) DVDs of them, instead of keeping CD copies around forever.

While my 'people should buy things' mentality may be uncommon among fansubbers, it was the vision with which the group was started, and We Suck would have ceased to be long ago if I did not still think it was correct.

I'm annoyed because you say allthough your doing your best to make a quality release, you seem to have sacrificed timing quality for speed. As one of the 27 people on this planet that actually cares about perfect subtitle timing, it just annoys me slightly that one of the possible reasons your beating us to the punch of, that I take about 17 days timing a single episode. I've had to untilitise time travel many times to get our product out. And when I get slightly annoyed at something, thats enough for the victum to receive full on sarcastic comments. Its nothing personal, I'm just board.

As far as what lavalyn did or did not say, I only know what he told me. From looking at some of what you quote there, it seems that you may have taken seriously some things that were meant in jest. For example, the strapline from our website isn't meant as a serious motto, it's meant as a joke.
I think there's certainly a difference between what we do and what groups that come into being to sub one episode of Naruto do. Those groups piggyback off the popularity of an established show with a short burst of effort to capture a slice of the tens of thousands of viewers that already exist for that show. We're putting in a continuous effort over multiple weeks to build a viewer base which in the end will still be substantially smaller. If our only interest was the download numbers, I'm sure we could have found a project that would have raked them in.
I don't think that our work is absolute crap, or on the low standard that AJ became well known for, or any other negative thing along such lines. I cerainly don't think I sacrifice quality for speed -- my work on an episode takes N hours for me to do the way I do it, and when it's done, it's done. It's not a case where spending another N hours would increase the quality of that episode. Of course UPS is extremely good. This isn't a vote them off the island survivor style show where everyone's greedy for cash. This is one where one idiot caused everyone to get stranded and because of that they all now have to get along and survive together. :D

Leave it to a japanese anime studio to take something that american TV has perty much trashed and turn it into something so awesome. hehe. UFS is almost like Gilligan's Island in its own way. I loved that show. But now I'm getting off on a tangent. hehe.

Well, I for one have found the We Suck encodes to be absolutely fine. (Perhaps the later ones are a bit big, but I prefer compact files over 100% pristeen video, 98% is good enough for me, and in any case it's a minor issue.) Perhaps the fact that they can do them in a short time indicates their methods won't produce an absolute top-drawer quality version, but a decent and quick version of a title slightly off the beaten track is praiseworthy from my perspective. It certainly doesn't seem like a "rush job". I think a good maxim to abide by here would be "if you can't think of anything nice to say, don't say anything."

The encodes are choppy because of their use of 'Packed Bitstream'.
Try playing their releases using the standard XVid codec and NOT FFDShow, playing via the latest XVid codec they aren't choppy, but they do use a lot of processing power then.

There are some things that are aimed at children, but contain adult themes, which will entertain any adults present. Like Shrek. On the surface it's a nice kiddy film, but there's lots of adult related humour in it.
UPS doesn't really have these adult themes, but its still something more than a kids show.
I'm really looking forward to seeing where this show is going.

I'd like to throw something in on that. This series respects its characters, and, realistic or not, has no reservations on their behaviors because of their ages. Remember how Kaoru went for the eyes on that Sea Snake? Remember Bell's grim attention to that fire?

And, from an entertainment standpoint, too many american designers commit suicide by making the youngsters so one-note. The characters must have measures of reasoning, principles, and maturity. These characters may be overly-distinguished in their differences, for effect, but they all have something going for them, even Howard if that isn't clear :innocent:. You can't overlook that when designing children.

Also, someone referred to Shingo as a genius. We only know so far that he is a prodigy--very different, and I don't consider him a genius. I'd say he's the most stupidly irreverent character because of his thoughts on fossil fuel and pollution. He hasn't grown up at all; he's no sage for them.

I disagree that Shrek is aimed at kids. Shrek was PG rated if I recall (if i'm wrong shoot me), and I think that indicates more of an all audiences thing. as well, both Toy Story movies were also aimed at "all audiences" rather than just children and I think Shrek falls into that category. It's silly to believe that G or PG ratings indicate something that was designed with children in mind.

Indeed. I couldn't have put it better myself. Worry less about deciding if it's for the wee young 'uns or not and simply enjoy it for what it is.

I've had my beady eyes on UPS (:heh: , cursed acronyms - I prefer MWS ^^ but the powers that be hath decided. UPS sounds very military to me, for want of a better word) since its hazy beginnings many moons ago (well okay, a couple). I'm glad it's received much more attention this last couple of weeks. Certainly an interesting bunch of characters and potential for some real desert island mayhem (bear in mind i've only seen up to ep 3). Definitely one to keep an eye on.

In episode eight, there's more characterization than perhaps every episode so far.I just saw episode eight -- loved it and best episode yet. It changes everything.

I think Luna's a fine leader. Bell is most capable, but he nominated Luna and the others got behind her; that's just how it happened. They don't take the leadership position too seriously; they shouldn't; Luna won't. More importantly, she's just someone they need to check in with: before hunting, before gathering, to keep track of food and water, etc. Most of all, she has been absolutely outgoing for everyone and they all like her -- I was kidding about Lord of the Flies by the way. :)

Man, I thought this show was great to begin with, but it's seriously becoming one of my most anticipated fansubs. It's so fun and adventurous. It doesn't drag on either. The pacing has been pretty fast, and this show is set to have over 50 episodes. That's kind of exciting. I love all the characters (including the ones I love to hate, like Sharla, Howard and Menori)

I dunno. I watch a lot of freaking anime. Lately I've been so overswamped with new shows that I have a lot of trouble keeping current on all the fansubs I download. I'm more than 5 episodes behind in a couple of series, yet for some strange reason with this show, I sit at my computer and count minutes until each episode is finished downloading.

I finally caught up with this show and read through the thread, so I'm going to spill my mind here.

The Good:
Distinctive characters
Interesting story
Entertaining to watch

The Bad:
Bell's (almost) constantly closed eyes. It annoys me.
A bit slow pacing, some redundant scenes.
Voice acting - Sharla's and Menori's voices are simply too deep and mature. Only if they heighten their voices to sound more like kids.

The Ugly:
(in accordance with most people) Howard - He needs to be tied up and dangled from a tree and skinned slowly so he can die a slow and painful death. Or have a needle and slowly poke him to death. Or force him to drink ocean water until he dies. I've got more sickening ways to kill people but anyways...

Some observations:
That violin of Menori is going to be something important. At least that's my guess. They could make a bow out of the strings...or something. I'm also curious about the magical lake, and the glowing Luna. Anyone got a guess? Maybe it grants wishes? I don't know. My guess at the ending? They live and adapt to the island and live until they become adults, before they're found. Then they return to civilization and find themselves awkward amongst all the technology. Sort of like that movie Castaway. Also reminds me of that episode of the Simpsons...
Wesuck seemed to have used a sharpen filter in encoding their video. I think it's unnecessary. The video seems good enough without the filter. Other than that...good stuff.

Except there's also the nature themes. This takes place far in the future, with sci-fi appliances and the like -- Earth is long dead from some sort of awful bioligical collapse, brought on by pollution.

All of the characters were raised in space colonies, with artificial air and sun. They crash on a planet similar to Earth, because of a field trip accident, and wash ashore somewhere. Now they have to make the best of things; and there's no reason to expect a rescue.

So seven kids and a robot pet are alone. It doesn't pull any punches -- so expect to see some harsh survival scenes.

Episode Nine:
In episode Nine their shuttle was destroyed. They might not be able to fix it.

It forms a spiritual, mental -- whatever you wish to call it, connection between life forms in the water.

I too am gunning for every new episode of this series. It's my most anticipated and favorite show.

Can't wait for Menori to get over herself. She seemed to resent being in charge (she had a limited sense of accountability and broke her own rules); lately she's resented letting someone else call the shots. That stuff about "you lowered our morale" in ep. 10 was totally uncalled for; it was saying that kind of thing that bummed everyone out.

Edit: ep. 10 example of ecology theme strengthening. I would not be surprised if they never left this planet they're on, looks a lot better than living in a bubble on some cold rock.

Personally I had no problems with her being in charge, it's usually better to have an authoritarian figure rather than someone who is more relaxed and makes decisions based on her heart instead of what's best (I'm speaking from experience of working in various corporate environments), but given that Luna is the main character, it was just a matter of time that she became the leader.

Sadly to say, I don't think anything could ever make me change my loathing of Howard and Sharla. I might get surprised though. Bell's starting to impress me. Sure the characters seem to be taking some predictable progressions personality-wise, but I'll be damned if every episode isn't more entertaining than the one before it. What the HECK is it with this show?!

edit: I suspected that Chako is a Kansai-ben speaker (like Osaka from Azumanga Daioh), but now I am sure of it. Chako's demeanor and speech are based on the stereotypical Osaka area person (even though they tend not to be pink, cat-shaped and made of chips and metal and things).

edit: As is true of many Madhouse productions the music for this show is quite good. I like the OP song and there are some nice bits in the BGM. "Sunny Side Hill" (the ED) is fabulous.

I almost had the urge to turn off the sound than listen to Menori's father. It makes we wonder if Menori was switched at birth and Howard was his son.... Menori is my second favorite character. I still like Luna more. Sharla well she hasn't grown on me yet and I find her voice a little annoying. Along with the fact she didn't want to kill the kangaroo so they could eat. In fact the only thing she is good for is coming up with names for things. She'll probably even name the house and island they are on later ^^;;

Why cry gloom and doom already, no need to be prejudiced like that. This is a children's series after all, children have a pretty high tolerance for repetition. And at least it's not one of those things where they are gonna meet more people and slowly build up some kind of team.

So far I have no real complaints. This is just space opera after all, no real science in it. A lot of stuff is made up on the fly. The story is not moving any too quickly but the characters are coming through. And I haven't noticed any really heavy "template" stuff - the show is not like an RPG or something.

Anyway, how would anyone here know what the writers have in mind? There is plenty could be done with this story. They might never leave the planet, or maybe they go home and there's a story in being home after the whole adventure.

I don't think they gave Luna the big backstory and strange powers just for laughs, either. Luna's destiny seems to be the real story in a way, and they haven't gotten into that very much yet.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to be a killjoy. The series is good to date, but I've seen too many long run series stumble and fall flat on their face after a really good start. So yeah, I guess I'm kinda pesimistic in a way.

Well, since it's good so far, I'll leave it at that and hope for the best while enjoying what's there. :)

I might even be starting to hate Sharla less. I really liked the ending of the episode, Howard is starting to seem a little more a part of the gang now.

I agree, the episodes just keep getting better and better. I think it's becuase they're slowly introducing all the characters and any back stories they have, that way all the characters have depth.

I dunno about Howard though, I still don't think he's learned his lesson, I can see another ep or two coming pretty soon where he crushes the hous with the help of Pague, or something like that.

For anyone who still feels that something is wrong with this show running 52 episodes I would like to point out that Madhouse can be quite masterful with long series as per Card Captor Sakura. Madhouse has been producing top-notch work for quite awhile now; there are some very good titles on this list of Madhouse projects (http://www.bcdb.com/pages/Other_Studios/M/Madhouse_Productions/).

Yup - I reboot into 98 or linux and have no problem at all, but I've actually gotten the BSOD a couple of times in XP with this release.

Great series though - my daughter is just seven, and now reads fast enough to keep up with the subs. We've been enjoying this one together.

I have to say first and foremost that I am very happy that this series is running 52 eps. Given the premise and the characters, they should have no problems constantly coming up with new stories.

Secondly, yes, WTF codec is We Suck using? because it definately sucks. It does not run on my trusty win 2000 box so I have to run it on my xp machine which is free of most of the codec crap i've DLed over the years (just got it last year). Still, it pains me that I can't run certain movies because encoders decide to use some shit format.

I believe we suck is using the newest XviD codec ( the one developed after 8/03 BETA). So you'll have to visit your nearest Koeppi XviD codec dealer to grab the newest codec.

We're using Koepi's Build (http://roeder.goe.net/~koepi/) of XviD, the Beta, not the Release Candidate. As discussed on the blog, the RC1 has issues which we right now don't feel like troubleshooting.

In particular, if you're using an older version of XviD, please upgrade. If you're using ffdshow, you may want to try having XviD perform the decoding instead of libavcodec.

Install FFDShow, when people aren't using packed bitstream.
When they are, just make sure your codec is up to date and play it with that.

What can I say, this series just popped out of nowhere, and its very very good. The story line and characters are likable. Howard is a complete asshole and someone has got to sort the guy out, how the rest of the group put up with his lazyness and bitching is beyond me.

Also only yesterday did I found out this series has 52 eps, which means lots of room or story and character developement. Maybe we're get a chance to see Howard stop being a complete twit.

I'd recommand watching this anime to anyone. Is there a manga version of this?

Personally I think Menori's voice is even worse. OK, close your eyes and listen to Menori when she talks. Who does she remind you of? You know who she reminds me of? A 30+ year old woman! I think I said this before, but her voices is too damn deep. It distracts me. Sharla's or Shara's, whatever her name is, isn't as bad as Menori's.

Here's another new way to kill Howard: Tie him up and dangle him above the lake. Lower him completely into the lake. Keep him down for 2 minutes. Pull him up and let him breath for about 3 seconds, and dunk him down into the lake again. Repeat process until he dies. Isn't that a torturous way to die? Hm hmm he he heh heh heh ha ha ha HA HA HA HA Haaaaaa. Ahhhh...that's feels so good.

Come on guys...join in on the fun. I want to hear your way of killing Howard too!

It airs Thursday at 7:30, Japan time. This series rocks. oh wait, did I mention that in my last post? Well, Ep15 gets even BETTER than Ep14. Ep14 was a bit of a 2 parter, and 15 just finishes it up (while adding so many questions!!!). I'm eagerly awaiting the next episode now!

I never had any problems with the codecs. I play them on my BSPlayer and yet to encounter anything wrong. Maybe I'm just lucky ^^;

I see that we are catching up huh. I'll have to get used to the one episode a week like everything else. I'm happy though ^.^ And I can definitely see UPS getting its separate forum. A '101 ways for Howard to die' thread would be great and thouroughly amusing XD

I was getting a bit of jitty at first, but after updating the codec for another one, it now runs fine under Media Player 9.

To sum it up Howard doesn't seem to care about their situation, he feels the need to still act the way he does, I mean WTF? Doesn't he get it? They are lost, their Shuttle is no more and about 90% of the animals on the Planet want to eat him and his friends.

He's a complete full and I can't wait till someone bitch slaps some sense into him.

I did a marathon this week and I watched the 14 eps in 5 days. I'm really enjoying the show, really deep and focus a lot on relationship (way better than thoses survivor reallity shows :P)

Anyway, spoiler ahead

Howard finally try to do something usefull (but fail at it), we he's still a clutz and a jackass, but at least he's starting to contribute to the group.

I really liked the momment when they ate that cute rabbitlike annimal, they needed it for survival, but even though the meet was good (well I assume it was) you could see disdaint in their faces (well except for you know who).

Whew, I finally caught up to the end of this thread. I began reading it after starting the eps. 14 torrent and it's already 22% complete.

This show is suprisingly enjoyable. At times it lacks imagination -- particularly when it comes to the flora and fauna on this supposedly alien planet -- but it does a great job bringing the characters to life.

I was somewhat upset to discover that they crash landed on an island. I mean, it's Uninhabited Planet Survive! not Uninhabited Island on a Planet Survive! Maybe somewhere in the next 40-odd episodes they'll find some way to explore the rest of the planet... that would be interesting. But I'm not going to hold my breath.

Personally, I find myself disliking Shingo more than Howard. Howard may be a bull-headed bigot but Shingo is like a mosquitto that keeps setting him off. You can't change people like Howard by throwing their faults back in their face. Luna and Bell have the right idea, acceptence with a smattering of real-life criticism.

And if that doesn't work there's always the highly stylized graphic death scene option. Personally I would like to see Howrad devoured by a wild pack of kangaroo-creatures. That could be done without being too graphic. He's in the woods pretending to gather firewood. The little "hoppers" surround him. He falls onto his butt screaming. Close-up of a frenzied kangaroo with red, glowing eyes. Howard's hand, sleeve torn, sound of ripping fabric. Fade to black.

Bell's my favorite character so far. Quiet, strong, always looking out for everyone but himself--the sort of person who always gets the worst of life.

As for Sharla, I notice a striking resemblance to Akage no Anne's Diana. Somewhat dense... unable to come up with truly interesting names. She basically names the kangaroo creatures "hoppers", and then names that big tree, er, "big tree" and then calls their house "our house". Why does everybody in the show keep praising her? I'm just waiting for her to name the island, I'm sure that'll be a zinger. How about, "Unihabited Island" or "Sector D"? Ooh, ohh, maybe she'll get to name the Planet too!

That's all well and funny, bwaugh, but let's set the record straight on Shara.

She named the kangaroo creature Tobihane. Let's not translate it like morons; Tobihane sounds fine, not the same for "Hopper".
She named the tree "The Great Tree" by We Suck's translation.
She named it "Everyone's House" by translation. I like this name. :frustrated:

Shara and Diana (from Akage no Anne) would get along well I should think.

Now that that's out of the way, there's a reason I'm posting:
The planet is supposed to be similar to Earth. Early on it seemed there would be some real romantic thoughts about an entirely natural planet.

Undeniable themes being: their first sunset, pollution destroying the Earth.

There were heavy environmental themes early on (Howard bragged about hunting artificial animals, Shingo neglected exhaust of fossil fuels, etc, etc); now it's all about the characters. I wish they would bring that environmental stuff up again :mad:.
The planet should not be a wierd place with blue trees and pink water. That wouldn't work.

I was thinking when Menori grabbed up all the eggs from the cliff-dwelling birds: great, this is only an island, how do you know you didn't just wipe them all out?

Of course, this is a show where they have managed to wear the same clothes for weeks on end already without anything ripping or becoming unbearably dirty. The ecology stuff if it ever comes back (and I also wish it would) may not amount to much; even in Chikyuu Shoujo Arujuna the strong ecology theme just got swept up in a bunch of nutty stuff about cheeseburgers vs. brown rice and magical powers.

Episode 15 was a bit slow; it seemed to take ages to get through the recap of #14 and then kind of stalled out at a critical point. It's nice that the plot is getting multi-threaded though; a whole episode about Shingo and his superiority complex would be a real teeth-grinder.

(boo, this post now contains half the stuff that I originally wanted to say... browser just crashed for now particular reason, so I lost all my typing.)

Anyways, so, I finally caught up. Saw the 15th episode. Freaked by Luna hearing voices and the discovery of the eastern forest (and what it contains).

Okay, these are my thoughts about what could happen:
1. The structure could be similar to the structure in the US movie "Mission to Mars."
2. The robot crabs are protecting what's in the structure from ill-meaning animals.
3. The robot crabs are placed there to not let what's in the structure out (based on the fact that when Luna was being chased by the crab, there was a point where the voice that she was hearing was masked by static).
4. Luna herself is an alien, but she doesn't know it and her mother, father, or other ancestor is waiting inside (based on the vision that she saw of two alien parents and a child)
5. The owner of the voice is trying to get out and will become an enemy of the kids.
6. The owner of the voice is trying to get out and will help the kids.
7. The rest of the series will revolve around finding out what's in the alien structure.

So, the alien structure and visions and voices really freaked me because I was not expecting them at all. And all of a sudden, a haunting voice is heard leading Luna to an ancient alien structure guarded by a seemingly endless supply of robot crabs? I was really wondering how the series could go on for 52 episodes until I saw these last couple episodes.

Darn... now I have to wait for the rest... 52 episodes is really going to last me a long time, especially if they are only released on a weekly basis. 52 weeks = 1 year!!! Ahh.... :(

I stick by my moronic translation. The word tobihaneru basically means to jump up and down, or to hop. Not that I would expect anyone to use "Hopper" in a fansub translation. Tobihane works perfectly in that setting. But it means what it means.

Yes, I did stretch the other names a bit to make my point, whatever that was. But I think most people would agree that "Great" and "Big" are, in definition, the same concept, while "Our" and "Everybody's" are also similar in meaning.

Honestly I expected somebody would take me to task for not mentioning "Fairy Lake" which does show a spark of imagination. But still, it's nothing compared to Anne Shirley's "Dryad's Bubble" or "Lake of Shining Waters." Like Diana Barry, Sharla is a sweet girl, but she shouldn't be praised for creativity.

I have to say, episode 15 shows more imagination than I've seen so far, even with its oversized earth-type creatures. It seems like one puzzle has been solved only to reveal a deeper mystery. And I also like how they're weaving the stories together. They've been leading up to episode 16 for the past two episodes, letting Shingo's frustration build.

One more thing, did anyone else find that Howard was not quite as annoying in this last episode? I mean, he's still bull-headed, still doing stupid things to get the other characters in trouble, but he seems to finally be having some fun.

Well he's not really having fun in a sense of the word, but he is becoming more of a team player, and trying to prove he's not completely useless. I think now he's come to conclusion they're going to be on the island for... well a bloody long time.

But he's getting pretty cool now, being more friendly to everyone, even showing concern like with the waterfall situation. All he needs to do is learn to take help from other betters, like when Bell saved his Bow and Arrow from the Boar. And he needs to stop screaming PAPA all the time, a man needs to learn to stand on his own two feet.

About Howard: He may not be as annoying as before in episode 15, I still hate him, DETEST him with a PASSION. My loathing for him will never end. The only way I can think of even beginning to like him if he maybe sacrificed himself to save everyone else's life. Either way, he's better off DEAD. No one's going to convince me otherwise. La la la la la la la la, I can't hear you. :heh:

Here's another new way to kill Howard: Hunt Howard for sport. Everyone will have a backpack full of rocks, and everyone will chase Howard and throw rocks at him until he's dead. He's not really physically fit, so Howard will eventually fall. Or they can do it the easy way: Tie Howard up from a tree, and simply stone him to death.

The water seems to be a conductor. The ship has plants growing from it which reach into the water. The lake is probably connected to the lagoon or whatever where the ship rests.

When is someone going to start up a fanfic site for grisly executions of Howard so that I can read this thread without getting Howard's blood smeared all over myself (._.)

52 eps, one a week, that's a year isn't it? Man your tread is going to be about for a long time coming, they should really replace the Full Metal Panic forum with this, I can see many disucssions coming up as the series gets more deep.

Howard is a prick, that we all know. But without him being there the group would have it made to easy, and the show would suck lets face it. Now if only he hadn't wasted all the power in that energy gun by aiming poorly, then he would have most likely killed the boar! :heh:

dreamless is right, they more or less used up a lot of the area's food in about a week or two. Give them their due, Bell is the oldest at 16, the rest are around 12-14, now I'm 20 and I feel half the stuff these kids did would tired me out big time.

Really its no wonder they used all the area's food, it must have taken a lot of energy to put the house together, even with that Big Elepant thing they have helping them... what's it name again?

Anyways the metal thing in the forest most likely uses the water as a way of sending signals to Luna, there must be something special about her which allows only Luna to hear the voice.

Now then how can she hear it when running about in the Huge Forest, well most likely the closer she gets to it, the easier it is for the voice to communicate with her, even without the need of water, maybe use using the trees and the ground itself.

Shingo is being a complete git at the moment, I know he wants to get home, but getting angry and bitching isn't going to help anyone anytime soon. Maybe that device they found from the Giant Crab could help them getting the communications equipment back online, seems from what I saw in ep 15 power to run everything is going to be a major problem.

currently the most boring character for me is Kaoru... he's just the typical "super cool and super strong and super smart and super handsome and super everything" boy... but then that's just relatively speaking, since this show really have a great cast of characters.
Yah, I wonder though, if Luna is going to talk to him and get him to open up more.. just like she did for Menori. (You know, perhaps more of those insights into their past) Because, we still have over 30 episodes.. and his "always going alone" outlook doesn't seem to be a desirable trait for such a circumstance. Also, he seemed to be touched by Luna's "you have to treat life as a precious thing" comment (can't remember which episode, it was the one where they finally kill the lizard). So, perhaps he will change.

And yah, Shingo.. .well, I'm surprised that none of the others felt the slight bit depressed too (except perhaps for Menori and Luna, because we know that they don't have much of a family to go back to). Shingo, on the otherhand, clearly misses his family (the picture).. Getting angry won't fix anything, as Firebat said, but hey, in such a circumstance.. it would probably be hard not to get frustrated..

I also see small traces of enviromental themes here and there, like how they exhausted their food supplies (fruits, eggs, fish) in a week, I mean, those fruit-bearing plants and birds and fish may have existed on this island for thousands of years, and now 7 humans come, and they are exhausted in a week, talking about destroying ecosystems...

He isnt the most boring character, he's the coolest! Without Kaoru, they wouldnt even last more than a year on that planet. Kaoru by himself could survive without any problems. Kaoru is the TRUE SURVIVOR!

I just saw episode 16. Howard as comic relief? Hardly. Just look at the way he acted in episode 16. He's back to his old exasperating self. But apparently he still has somewhat of a heart. Nevertheless, an asshole with a heart is STILL an ASSHOLE. My hatred for him remains.

I concur with nubby. Kaoru is a great guy. Does all the things nubby mentioned with no complaint, by himself. But whatever, I don't expect everyone like Kaoru.

And to finish off my post, a new way to kill Howard!
Have Pague play some soccer using Howard as the ball. The game is over when Howard dies.

Howard should really die but he did make up for it at the end. For that I give him a cookie. :p

Now that we heard all the backstory on the others besides Luna & Chako the real story begins. Luna probably does have an connection to the ruins considering shes the only one who can hear the voice in her head. Shes probably an alien, who knows, anything is possible. I really think this series could end at 25-26. 52 episodes is really streching it. Anyhow I love this series....in the preview for the next episode it looks like Luna gets hurt or sick or something and Shara tries super hard to help her. Can't wait...I wan't to see it now. :D

I would say, except for Luna and Chako, everyone has changed a little or a lot. Even Howard is starting to change a little, but he hasn't quite gotten out of his old ways.
Luna has not changed because she's had no reason to. And Chako is a robot so uh...

Finshed watching ep 16... all of them shouting out at the sea in the end was cheesy, I had to turn to volume down since it was really annoying! Really I don't think I'd ever find myself using up energy to cry out "Mum and Dad" like a nutter!

Howard went to far in this ep, its a shame since he's been pretty good the last 3 eps or so. But he did see the error of his ways, but the fool really needs to know when to shut up. :help:

Seems Luna going to have some kind of flu in the next ep and Sharla is going to find some kind of flower to help her out, maybe at long last we see a different side to her, less crybaby annoying side that is. :heh:

I didn't think that scene was cheesy at all :P I thought it was really touching. I mean if it was in english I might have to turn it down since other people might hear, but since nobody here knows japanese other than me, it was just touching.

About the codec problems, my advice would be to uninstall all your codecs and get either VLC or ffdshow; but browse through the bittorrent thread and see if you find anything that might help.

If you were in such a situation at that age, you would have done the same. And shouting out your concerns, fears, and such things is a good way of relieving such tensions. I didn’t think it was cheesy at all, and I do think it was well acted too. If you stop and think about their situation, such a thing could be really emotional. If this was a more realistic anime, that scene would’ve had more impact.

I liked this ep much more than last two. By far is one of my fave. I didn´t find it annoying, but perhaps is also a cultural thing. I´m actually a little bit older (just a little xD) than the characters in the series and I would actually do te same if I was in a place I don´t know and don´t know how to go back to the people I know.

Go watch Battle Royale for a disturbing other view of how to go about it :D

Battle Royale.. my friend was telling me about that when I was telling him about Uninhabited Planet Survive. From what he said, it sounds very disturbing. However, is it licensed or something? I can't find an entry for it on AnimeNfo.com or AniDB.net. Though, I don't know if I'd want to watch it. It sounds... yah... disturbing.

But yah.. my thoughts regarding the big yelling scene, I have two ways of looking at it. 1), Howard was trying to make Shingo feel better by letting him know that he actually felt the same way.. and then the rest of them followed to make them feel better. 2), it's one of those rhetorical cries of desparation. I'm not sure how to describe what I mean.. can't think of any thing to compare it too.

And whoa... Shingo fixed it! right before they connected it to the outside world, I immediately thought, wouldn't it be interesting if that alien guy responded? and... whadya know.. he did! wow.. now this could be interesting.. and hey, did Shingo ever use that part from the crab? I didn't catch if he did.. I only remember that he and Chako were discussing if they could use it.

Now, will they actually use the communications device anymore? Or will they just get freaked out from the voice that's calling them?

Oh and, I have a question about the We Suck fansubs. Whenever Luna hears the voice, the subs are written mirrored (same thing happened in what I wrote above in the spoiler). Also, especially in the spoiler, the characters mentioned that they did not understand what was said. So, my question is, is the actual Japanese spoken backwards during that point? Or is it just muffled and difficult to make out?

Anyways, for the content portion, a spoiler tag for those who haven't seen up to 16:

My feeling on Luna being the only telepathic receiver is that the voice is speaking directly to her, as she was the first sentient being to enter Fairy Lake, which we have seen is a hotspot of the voice's psychic power. I don't really buy the 'Luna is an alien' theory--it would make a great twist, and I'd have to kiss someone at NHK if they did it, but if she was a member of the race speaking to her, somehow disguised or modified to be indistinguishable from human since the alien family photo we saw shows them to appear quite non-human, why would the telepathy be so painful for her? The mindstorm she suffered in 15 suggests that she's just a normal person, and the telepathy has a negative effect on her as such. In fact, it's my opinion that her fever in 17 will be caused by one of these mindstorms, although it could just as easily be a real disease. I also think it will be a catalyst for them to return to the Eastern Woods.

Now, for a bonus spoiler, future episode titles from the NHK page for the show:

Odd because it's written in katakana, which is typically used for foreign words, although it is a valid sentence (fragment). Usually the titles correspond closely to at least one specific line from the episode, so bearing in mind that it'll probably be spoken, let's go with Episode 19: Please... take care of this child...

第20話ア・ダ・ム
This one's straightforward. Episode 20: Adam

So 19 could either be Luna's backstory, where an alien hands her off to her human surrogate parents and says, "Please... take care of this child..." Or it could be that the voice is the father in the alien family photo, his daughter is in a cryo tank in the ruins (which is the bulgy thing Luna saw in her vision), which are a ship (as I originally incorrectly translated that line--sorry) and the voice says to Luna and/or the group, "Please... take care of this child..." Of course, we know what the child looks like from the photo, so unless they're shapeshifters, this still doesn't explain where The Pink Dinosaur comes from. And I'm at a loss as far as 20's concerned.

Oh, and for the backwards dialogue, I suspect that what the characters hear is not backwards Japanese, but we hear it that way so we can deduce what's really being said, since we don't have Luna's benefit of getting a simultaneous emotional response. Also, I think it's like many shows wherein the actors speak Japanese because the audience speaks Japanese, not because the characters actually speak it in the world of the show. Thus, the characters talking about how the voice is actually speaking backwards would break that pattern.
