View Full Version : Code Geass (both seasons) licensed by Bandai Entertainment
Bandai Entertainment have announced the license for Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion at Otakon 2007. See ANN (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2007-07-21/bandai-goes-geass) for more details. At this point in time we are assuming that both the TV series (episodes 1 to 25) and the Picture Book DVD Extras are licensed.
Update: As confirmed at Anime Boston 2008 (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/convention/2008/bandai-entertainment), this license includes the second season ("R2"), the manga series, and the light novel series.
Feel free to discuss the topic in this thread. And as usual, any discussion about where to download Code Geass anime is no longer allowed.

As usual, any time a series gets incredibly popular it's asking to be licensed. Since Code Geass is licensed does that mean that any episodes in the second season will already be licensed as well?

I KNEW IT!! I sooooooo knew it! I knew Bandai Entertainment was gonna get Code Geass just like how I knew (well almost everybody actually) FUNimation got Ouran! And I was right! Woohoo! Since my chinese zodiac is rooster, I'm partially right at almost anything! Sorry about that.
Of course we all knew this was going to happen --- i'm just happen that its happened already.
Code Geass being picked up by Bandai was the most obvious announcement ever. There was already blatant hints they had it (Pizza Hut appearing in promotions of other shows that Bandai has the rights to). The fact it's getting a TV airing is also a given, but I'm not sure how they're going to handle it.

In before,
Post-production: Bang Zoom! Entertainment
Lelouch Lamperouge - Crispin Freeman
C.C. - Wendee Lee
Kallen Stadtfelt - Stephanie Sheh
Suzaku Kururugi - Johnny Yong Bosch
RIVALZ - Yuri Lowenthal
Diethard Ried - Michael McConnohie
Jeremiah Gottwald - Steven J. Blum
...
But I kid (hopefully!) - Ocean Studios might very well get this and we'll have a very non-predictable cast. Here's hoping Geass doesn't go the road of Gundam SEED in the ELC and follows (perhaps, overshadows?) the upcoming Death Note.
... it's already confirmed ZRO Limit/Animaze (same people who did Cowboy Bebop's dub) are producing the dub. Same voice pool as Bang Zoom, but different direction style.

As much as I love Crispin Freeman as a VA his voice sounds far to deep to do lulu, although I think he could pull off Zero perfectly.

I have their whole Gundam seed series set. Their collector edition is preaty cool. As for their Dub, I liked how it was done. I personally liked Cagali's voice dubbed better than the sub. But in terms of video quality its perfect.
Hopefully code geass will turn out as good. I am definitly going to buy it as it is in my Top 5 anime.

It was just a matter of time. Bandai would've been stupid if they didn't bring this stateside, as I can see this can appeal to a LOT of people I know. Now the only question is, will the picture books also come stateside, in the form of limited edition bonus maybe?

I've heard that, and I've also heard that it was because they messed up and ended up airing unscheduled recaps because they were behind: this is said to have made it impossible for them to get a new television spot for the anime until recently.

It's definitely not coming in Cartoon Network. It's too mature and specific for the children watching. *cough (Americans..) It might be in Adult Swim, but they'll just make it look like crap with their stupid theme as well as censoring and cutting off all the stuff. *sigh At least, they made Evangelion look like crap.
Code Geass would probably be better off on Sci-Fi's Ani-Monday. The only parts that are censored are nudity and swearing.

Adult Swim does alter themes except making them shorter nor do they cut a lot of stuff. The most they've done censor wise is blur nudity. Hell, they even allowed curse words in GITS.
I would think they'd be hesitant because of how nationalistic it can seem.

Are you sure that the second season is called something else? I've been hearing, though not confirmed, that the second season is just going to be a continuation, with the first episode of Season 2 called "Stage 26." Just because Code Geass has a second season, doesn't mean that the second season is going to be titled differently (unless, of course, you have a source to back this up).
Code Geass would probably be better off on Sci-Fi's Ani-Monday. The only parts that are censored are nudity and swearing.
It's definitely not going to be on Sci-Fi's Ani-Monday block. That block was created through an exclusive deal between the Sci-Fi Channel and Manga Entertainment, so only Manga Entertainment shows are on there. Since Geass is licensed by Bandai, it'll be airing somewhere else. My bet is Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, because Bandai has said before in an interview (when asked about hosting their own anime channel) that the best place to expose anime titles on TV is through Cartoon Network.

From what I remember seeing, the second season is being treated more as a sequel rather than a continuation. Besides, it's pretty clear that by the end of season 1 he will have control of Japan. So it's not really a rebellion anymore.

Still, it'd be nice to wait until it's confirmed that Season 2 is going to be called something else. You can't just say that Bandai only licensed Season 1 because it's titled "Lelouch of the Rebellion;" you're making quite a few assumptions by saying that. Also, we don't know what exactly is going to happen in Season 2, so I don't think it's safe to conclude that Lelouch has won control of Japan just yet.
Besides, it's not unheard of for different seasons to be under the same title. Magic Knight Rayearth had a time gap betwen its two seasons (the second season didn't air until a month after the first season ended), but they were under the same title. And yes, the second season for Geass will be a much longer wait than one month, but that's not my point; my point is that it's not impossible for the two seasons to be under the same show title.
We should find out after Episodes 24 & 25 have aired if the second season will be called something else (I'll bet there'll be a preview of the second season after those episodes air). Until then, let's not jump to conclusions just yet.
EDIT: Then again, I wonder if we will see a preview of the second season after 24 & 25 airs... I just noticed that the October date for the second season that was announced by magazines is false information. -_-
It's been confirmed that season 2 is set on a World bases and not Japan, which says he'll take Japan.
As for a show like Magic Knight Rayearth, Lelouch of the Rebellion is more a sub-title, unlike Magic Knight Rayearth which was just the show title. The show is Code Geass. And you're also making an asumption by saying it will be the same. But from how things seemed to be protrayed from the interviews I've seen translated, I can't really see it continuing having Lelouch of the Rebellion in S2. But I'm not going to say it's fact until we do have a proper title.
As for when S2 will air. My instinct is still for the autumn season. To wait until next year seems a bit wrong with how long ago S2 was confirmed. Just because they said it wasn't October doesn't mean it can' be this year. Most of the current shows end in September. Guess we'll have to wait and see when the autumn line-up is official since as far as I'm aware Darker than Black's replacement hasn't been announced yet, and that timeslot is when S2 of Code Geass is going to air. Whether it's when DtB ends, or after it's replacement, we don't know.

I SO called it! Code Geass will premiere on Adult Swim!
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2007-12-08/code-geass-to-air-on-adult-swim-in-usa
English cast list has been announced as well! According to ANN (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/convention/2007/code-geass), director Goro Taniguchi helped out choosing the voices so NO COMPLAINING! :p
Lelouch: Johnny Yong Bosch
C2 (CC): Kate Higgins
Kallen: Karen Strassman
Suzaku Kururugi: Yuri Lowenthal
Lloyd: Liam O'Brien
Tohdoh: Steve Blum
Bartley: Peter Spellos
Clovis: Dave Wittenberg
Emperor: Michael McConnohie
Shirley: Amy Kincaid
Milly: Julie Ann Taylor
Nina & Sayoko: Kim Mai Guest
Hmmm, I'm not going to cast judgment on them until the show actually premieres. Though considering how prolific Code Geass is, the guys from Animaze are really bringing in the big peeps. Let's see if JYB can pull off a maniacal laughter at certain points.

Kaneda as Zero is a good choice, his voice is a good leadership voice. Sasuke as Suzaku, yay now Yuri plays 2 guys I hate! Ironically both these guys played Renton in Eureka 7, VOICE ACTOR WAR!
Not a big fan with Sakura as C.C.
Liam as Lloyd is a good choice.
No announcements on Cornelia or Euphemia?
Note: All coming from someone who's never seen Code Geass.
Well, no complaining since the guy above said the original Japanese director himself said he wanted these voices.
Although I do think Bosch is a good pick (To me, he's the Vic of Bang Zoom/ Animaze), I would agree, looking at the characters, that Yuri would fit better. Actually, yeah, since Yuri has done both heroic or nice-guy characters (Luke, Haseo, Yashima), he's also done semi evil or psychotic ones (Asch, Gig. Gig is the prime example.). Considering it seems Lulu has both a goody-wimpy side and a psychotic "YOU WILL SUFFER, DIE, AND SUFFER AGAIN" side, Yuri would fit well. No offense to Goro, but I think if he knew that, he'd of picked Yuri, or switched Lulu and Suzu's actors.
Otherwise, so far, the group has yet to fail me in the acting department (Lotta big names I like), so I'm looking forward to seeing Code Geass in English, as I missed the sub run. I don't watch Adult Swim (Since they put anime on at a time I should be in bed for work the next day), so I'm probably just gonna stick with the DVDs.
So this will air on Adult Swim in Spring of 2008 (most likely replacing Blood+ 12:30a.m. slot) while the second season will air in Japan. It doesn't sound like coincidence since the director selected the English cast and he is in charge of the second series as well.

ANN (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/convention/2007/code-geass)reported that at the Code Geass focus panel held during the New York Anime Festival, Bandai announced that it had licensed all three manga adaptations, one light novel, and several Code Geass merchandise items. "R2"? I assume by this you mean the second season?
Simple answer, we don't know.
The license for the first season was announced in July 2007. I don't think the second season was announced until just recently (officially at least) so chances are they only have the first season (at the moment at least). There is every chance they (Bandai) will license the second season as well but I think they will need to actually make an announcement.

On April 6, the second 25-episode season of Code Geass will begin in Japan, and Bandai's license already extends to cover that, as well as the manga adaptations of the series and the light novel.

I don't think Bandai Entertainment's going to make a big deal out of it. At the panel, one member of the audience asked the reps if they knew if both Lulu and Suzaku made it out alive. Their reply was something like "I don't know but.....wait, you wouldn't know either because you haven't seen the last two episodes, right? *Cough cough wink wink*".
Someone else suggested putting in an orange or some pizza with the DVD releases, but they told us that might be a little bit hard. :heh:
