One word: "GARLOCK". I'm not really sure what I should do right now - I'm tempted to go to the Yotsuba topic for seventeen, but there's been so many darn Harry Potter spoilers and I haven't even started reading the book. Is spoiling Harry Potter worth spoiling Gurren-Lagann?
Tough choice. I'd say heck yes. :heh:

How have you avoided Harry Potter spoilers when you're a regular on 4chan?! :heh:

Slow and steady stalls the spoilers - I don't rush through topics as quickly as I did before, so I read stuff by post to avoid stepping on landmines. If the boiler room gets too hot I scamper off into /m/, /ck/ or /n/.
It doesn't matter, though. Even if my book arrives right now, I can't finish the whole beast in a single hour. I'll be committing harakiri in the end.
i really don't think he's gonna be Garlock this soon. sure he's older now, but we're not that far yet.

Remember, Simon is not Kamina --- he is his own man.
Shall be very interesting to see how his character has grown over the years.

Oh my god.
...
This episode is fantastic.
Wow, so seen that shot coming from a mile away.
That actually implies that good and evil Nia are seperate personalities, and therefore Nia isn't actually doing all of this willingly.
I didn't think he'd return so quickly. Looks like he has already been captured, I've got the feeling he's going to help Simon in the future...

Yeah, whoever made that comparison between GL and that Oni story hit the nail on the head. Not that it wasn't too difficult to figure out from the episode titles, but MAN, this implies Gainax is gonna pull another episode eight! O_o
Pretty gutsy, I daresay.
2nd half of the episode seems crazy.
2nd half of the episode seems crazy.
Its a good thing the preview from last week didn't give anything away then.
Holy Crap At The Ending Scene.

The only thing that those things share rightnow is Heroine turn evil against her will -_-;
We pretty much guess thats gonna happen since last week. Other elements are totally different, I don't think GL made an adaption from there
and hmm we don't have new ED?... we don't have ED at all!
and too bad huh Simon

Well, it IS Kamina City... Surely there'd be a tribute or something.
Come to think of it, maybe they should've reconstructed Tepellin as Kaminallin. :heh:
Epic OP is EPIC. Sure, a recycled scene or 2, but the spoilerish implications more than makes up everything. The GARlock cloak is imminent!
But damn...I was kinda hoping for a GL-type King Kitan upgrade. It looks like it'll stay the same though. :(
For OP//

I can't provide you with episode since its licensed. This thing is just a 1 min clip;
It seems like it will be
Nia (buster corp) vs Simon Pirate crew vs Rosui's government now

My only bug is that when Lagann's eyes light up, there's a quick scene switch and the "buzz" that's so characteristic of Sorairo Days is cut off a bit.
But, the man himself did appear at the very end of the OP. Plus, we get to see that massive ship from episode one again, as well.
I doubt the scene where Gurren-Lagann rears back shows future opponents - they look more like epic upgrades.
I don't like new OP for some reason... they only thing I like about them are the new shots.. They even recycle the song damit
anyway some quick things that people might misses
- Spiral King was standing behind Simon x Viral screen
- Rosui is no longer in Gurren-dan pic; he has his own cult.
- We have "DieBuster" there too. Machine as large as the earth
- Simon was walking towards the galaxy. the SPIRAL
- Viral join gurren-dan
I don't really mind the reused footage as we're getting a new edit by episode 22-23 anyway. The scene composition in the new scenes looks amazing. Perhaps someone may put a pretty nice mad with the footage.

This show is 25 episode... the last one probably don't even have an OP...
do you think they will EDIT just for 1-2 episodes?

How could people had missed the "Lagannlactus"?
Well, if the size is to ratio, GL looks like it'll have 3 more upgrades/power-ups at least, with Galactus being the last.
And I thought recap inclusive, it's 27?

27 in total, you're correct.

No, it's 27 episodes long counting the recap.

Helix King doesn't look normal in the shot, he's missing a chest and arms. It's almost like a fake machine of sorts - could be the style, but looks really strange to me.
Regarding the Rossiu deal, those are probably his supporters for population control. Looks to me like Dyakka and Kiyoh's child was number one million, and Rossiu has been at odds with Simon for not heeding Helix King's words.
I got a better look at the screenshot with Helix King.
He's got glowing green eyes and some glowing squares along his "body", which lends credence to the theory that he's an android or a cyborg. Explains how Nia was born - she's a bio-android, like Melfina, she doesn't really have a mother.
ALSO, something important (?) regarding the last scene of the OP -
The "light path" Garlock is walking on toward the galaxy is actually composed of screenshots from the series, like, say, there's a really clear one of Yoko. Could possibly be simmilar to what we saw in Berserk with Griffith "walking on the path paved with the bodies of fallen comrades".
more like rossiu recreated/revived/or cloned the helix king and turned him into some bio computer to get some info?
that's supposed to be the connection to the next title (i'll have you tell me the secret of the world)
- Yes this thing is 27 ep, my bad

watched this about 20 times now; all the shots are Simon's shot.. if you wanna symbolized it that way; he is walking over himself in the past
Well at last I am cheering for something to happen in this series (other than having Yoko die).
Save NIA, Simon~ I am looking forward GAR Simon who will kick the pulp out of all reasons and save Nia regardless. Walk to golden road!~
and don't die..

Interesting... so Rosui learned that the world might be doom if population reach 1m, so he will try to limit the population.
hmmm
watched the episode 1/2 half...
- Rosui is REALLY strict, some Gurren-dan member hate him now boo
- Nia still cooking bento for Simon
- Leeon is carrying out mission to Moon to verify whether if Spiral King words are true or not.
- Daiakka's kid is about to hit 1m jackpot
Wow (don't know what else to say)

that's what I got from the OP scene
(and why do you want Yoko of all people to die so badly? )
anyway i didn't record the ep but here are some interesting bits in the ep that i sort of remembered
a. the new government sends up a team to investigate the moon
b. all the ganmen are outdated and replaced by mass production gurren laganns
c. kinon is the female attendant to rossiu in this episode
d. rossiu wants to get an accurate count of the population but the other people in the administration aren't doing anything.
f. viral's defending people's right to go back to living underground since the new government by rossiu is trying to get people above ground and get an accurate count
g. nia rejects simon's proposal lol
h. there's a rossiu faction that's fed up with the other people in the gov
i. the old guy is just a butler-type beast person so that's why he was so dedicated to nia
I freaking lol'd when nia reject Simon. her reason was really LOL'd
its because Simon's word it "Let's become the same person"
So Nia rejected it because she believe that she and Simon are different person lol
Anyway; after Kiyo explained it to her, Nia called him and accept the proposal
- Viral is freaking GAR. T_T
Rosui is EVIL now, he was trying to force all human to live on surface... just like Spiral king
... Rosui was also planning to blame city's destruction on Simon as well.. now he got a new target, Nia
- Nia SYSTEM ON!
- Spiral King revive by Rosui

Episode 17 Screencaps and Summary (http://randomc.animeblogger.net/2007/07/21/gurren-lagann-17/)
With the seven year jump, I felt like I was watching the sequel to GL or something, but it was every bit as awesome, if not more so. Nia's rejection of Simon was hilarious, her turning "evil" at the end was very unexpected, as was Lord Genome's appearance in the preview. They've exceeded my expectations once again; would give this a 11/10 if I could.
Pretty awesome episode... if only the new enemies weren't CG. :P
ok watched everything; these are summary points
watched the thing; nice episode quick summary:
- Simon the supreme commander; Rosui next in command.
- Rosui was trying to force all human to live on the surface so that they can do the count
- Rosui now has his own followers. Kino included.
- Kyon and Dayaaka is having a baby; and its number 1000000
- Yoko left for a journey
- Viral is protecting the human who want to go live underground. Rosui keeps this fact secret from Simon and force all human to live on the ground for weird reasons.
- Simon propose to Nia, she rejected it because of the way Simon word his sentence lol. She call in later to accept the proposal
- They are using new robot call Grapal instead of Gunmen. Rosui + co. took Grapal off the market now.
- Rosui believe that Simon shouldn't fight, he is the supreme commander and should sit back.
- Anti-Spiral System activate once human population over ground reach 1 million. A machine was summon to the earth and began the attack. System inside Nia also was activated.
- Darry, Gami + other new soldiers use Grapal to fight against machine which appear buy fail, they can't even damage it. Kitan + co want to go out as well, but Kino said that Gunmen would be totally useless.
- Simon came out with Gurren-Lagann against Rosui's advice and defeat the machine. The machine broke into pieces and explode over the town killing people.
- Rosui was angry about Simon fighting in the front line and the fact that he fight with unknown enemy and cause all these damage;
- Before we can see further; Nia's image was projected all over the town. Declaring the start of Anti-Spiral System.
Next episode;
- Rosui revive the spiral king to ask the secret of this world from him.
- From the preview most likely Rosui will turn against Simon. What would Simon do!?
---------------------- thought
This arc is about Rosui;
- well Rosui isn't really evil.. just that he is very dense about achieving his goal... I am having problem with him bad mouthing about others and starting his own co. though
- 1 million population on surface is pretty much the indirect results from Rosui's action....well... I know he wanna get accurate count, but is it worth forcing all those people overground agaisnt their will and make the prediction comes faster?
- Anti-Spiral system; pretty much the system which use to limit human population. It was set up on the moon... hmm spiral king's action wasn't all that impossible to understand.
- Viral is fighting to protect human and their freedom. WOOTT HERE COMES VIRAL!
- I am somehow thinking that the reason why those machine can't be damaged is because they are using Grapa instead of Gunmen :\.... I might be wrong. But Simon's GL is the only Gunmen that get to fight against that machine and defeat it.
- Next episode Gimi, Darry + co will come and capture Simon.. ofoucrse we know who order them.

Lots of Z.O.E vibes from the end... highly technological cities, enemies that look like Orbital Frames in CG, and the LEV-ish GL-type Grapals...
Very good episode. But alas, my small glimmer of hope for ViralYoko is pretty much crumbled into pieces now, since Viral's clearly a lone renegade here. Nice to see him giving nod to Enkidu-du though for lasting all the 7 years.

Woot! I love NIA!! She is OMFG awesomeness!
This is the first time I like a Female villain in an anime. Woohoo. Call me crazy, I hope she wins!....
Maybe not, I hope Simon saves her in the end. I'm still hoping for a happy end.
And WTF at the next ep preview. Rossiu kept the Helix King's body alive??? This is so cliched but a good one.
Anyway, I kept watching the scene where EVIL-NIA announces war. So f*cking awesome.
Looks like the new opponents also have their own set of Ganmen.
The 3 ganmens in the OP,either they are owned by the big bad guys(from their evil looking design) or Gurren power up form (all those drills)

Hmm,
After rewatching some parts. It seems like the Helix King did right by creating Ganmens. I'm sure that the enemies from the moon are not called Ganmens, since they are Anti-Spiral machines and they have no Faces. Remember that Ganmens are called Ganmens because they have Faces.
It is up to Gurren-Lagann and the original Ganmens to fight the aliens with Spiral power. Well Simon is cool, but I'm still waiting for his ultimate Gar. I just hope EVIL-Nia is still around by then.

Though the only enemy that appear in this episode seems to be mass production version, there are loads of em surrounding 3 Grapals in the OP.Their leaders might still be using Ganmens like machines or you are right and those 3 evil looking ganmens are owned by Rosui's gang.Would explain the drills design on the golden one.
it's almost like it's become an entirely different show. not in a bad way or anything, but it doesn't feel the same for some reason.

i don't think Rosui is hiding anything like that, he just have different ways of dealing with the crisis. hmmm...
I am surprised why Gainax was to proposed 2 different side which are not hero at the same time: Rosui and Nia (Anti-Spiral system). This will be fun
Nia seems to be with the villian this arc. heroine and villain at the same time, remind me a lot of a certain heroine from Fate. The hero will turn VERY GAR if you have this formula.

- Some circuit pattern crawling along her body when transformed.
- Abadon by the parents....

He could just create em later on to deal with Simon or anti spiral troops since Grapals are ineffective.Probably with Nia's dad help
I wonder whether Nia would stay and travel with the gang with occasional evil breakout >< or gone to the other side completely till close to series' end.

Kono minikuku mo utsukushii sekai has quite a clear ending too. Not exactly very happy but happy enough.

Except him :heh: probably influence of Kinon assuming she became his next in command.

No idea but hopefully he would return not exactly as the original Kamina(being clone or w/e) since it would cheapen his earlier death -.-

Well, Kinon is in his faction...It's a strange feeling really, like the 3 sisters are all split up in their own ways... Ironic how Kinon's name is a direct opposite of what Rossiu's pursuing at this moment, far from optimism.

Gave the episode a "very good". The CGI enemies don't bother me since they're good-looking so long as they don't try to emulate something smooth (like the Dragon in FSN) - but only Darry + Gimmy had a voice change? No, that's pretty sad. I wasn't exactly expecting Garlock to be everywhere in this episode, but his mean voice should have been a TAD deeper. Same goes for Nia, I've gotten used to Rossiu but I really wanted to hear an overlord-type voice from him.
Aside from that...I don't like Kiyoh's house. Terek hates American suburbia - why couldn't that have been a Japanese-style house? :heh:

Awesome ep.
The OP alone left me in a muddy puddle of fanboyism. Looks like politicking and bureaucracy takes centrestage, before GARlock comes back and kicks them back aside where they belong, at least. A few thoughts:
- The jokes were few, but bloody darned good. 'Iyada!' was gold.
- Great job on making the Supreme Council look decadent. But what's with Dayakka?! He's probably the next in line after Rossiu in level of prudence, and he didn't say anything?
- As someone(aohige?Nighty?) has enlightened us before, the current decade of mecha-anime-homaging has now shifted to the 80s. and its a great breath of fresh air, despite the heavy mood. Absolutely loved the little UC Gundam similarities.
- Yay Viral! IMO he'll probably hold the key to completing the rock-paper-scissors cycle between Ganmen, the Grapals and the new faceless Antispiral mecha I'm foreseeing. And he is WIN for defending humans.
- Nice irony for Simon and Rossiu regarding each other as...any word for heiwa boke? Letting peaceful times get to the head?
- Does anyone else think the recap ep last week made the timeskip a little more digestible?
- As someone(aohige?Nighty?) has enlightened us before, the current decade of mecha-anime-homaging has now shifted to the 80s. and its a great breath of fresh air, despite the heavy mood. Absolutely loved the little UC Gundam similarities.
90s, actually. This 3rd part is homage to the 90s.
And it shows. The style of animation, conflicts, enemy mechs... they do a great job in reminding us of the past decade.
...any word for heiwa boke? Letting peaceful times get to the head?
There are no specific english term that's used in the same context, as far as I know.
Your description is fine, I think.
sigh... if you talk about 90s.. I always think of this thing... lol its by Sunrise, may be it doesn't count.
http://www.sunrise-inc.co.jp/works/img_datacard/108_1.jpg
Its 1993.. miss it so much, can't find a place to buy it now too
and well the most famous title during the 90s is Eva (1995) no doubt.
If you stick to the robot shows, anime that crosses my mind first when thinking about 90s are Eva, Nadesico, Yuusha series, and Gundam W.

Oh yeah, I definitely agree with aohige. Those are the robot shows that come to mind... and of course Magic Knight Rayearth, Escaflowne and Ryuu Knight... but erm let's put those medieval type mechas aside.
I sincerely hope that OP Kamina with the shining tattoo on his back isn't what it looks like it may be. :(
That was pretty obviously just a homage to him. :heh:
Very awesome episode. It finally feels like the show has gotten some storyline to it. The last 15 episodes have been pure adrenaline and while not bad, it kind of leaves an empty feeling after watching it.
Lots of neat things about this ep.
- Funny that Rossiu became what he left behind and he actually predicted it in Episode 7. Even Simon recognizes it and yells at him "Isn't it the same thing that happened in your village!" (not direct quote)
- Everyone is looking fairly good now that the time jump has occurred. All the kid characters are grown while the older ones are staying relatively the same with a few cosmetic differences. Even Kiyal is taller and a little older looking.
- Dayakka definitely knew something was up with Rossiu, hence his uneasiness at Sonchou's Pigmole resturant (lol at him becoming a fat resturant mogul)
- Rossiu and Simon are a clash of personality types, typical to 90s mecha anime. The hard line serious character and the casual, carefree character. Both want the same thing but have very different ways of going about it.
- Rossiu seems to have most of the upper command personnel behind him like scientists and operators. While they aren't a faction in this episode, you can tell they follow Rossiu's line of thinking.
- Viral is looking ragged and badass! A guerrilla protecting the people that wish to live underground because it was their home.
- It looks like Viral knows exactly how the Anti-Spiral Annihilation System (whatever it is exactly, I can't recall)works. Speculation here but it seems he knows that the system keeps tabs of humans on the surface and hence is protecting the humans that want to live underground again.
- If the above is the case, Rossiu ended up bringing on the onslaught from the moon and that'll be his ticket back onto the good side by the end of the series. ;x
- The Grapals or whatever seem to be based on Lagann and replaced the Ganmen. Kinon mentions that they decomissioned them (I believe) not only because they believe the Grapals are more advanced but also because they didn't want to use the Spiral King's technology (which seems to be the counter measure). I'm kinda guessing because I only watched the sequence once so I don't have all the details.
- Kittan is totally shocked at Kinon's personality change, haha.
- Reality check for Simon at the end of the fight. Kittan gets yelled at by Rossiu about going in head first into the battle without assessing the situation.
- Nia is still as silly as ever. Seven years with everyone and she still doesn't understand. ;x
- Where the cheesepoofs was Attenborough!? I wanted to see what the trigger happy muppet looked like post time jump.
- Eyecatch had rap now, woof. The New ED is good, not as good as the original ED IMO but very nice overall. It has tons of Boota too! BOOTA FTW!

"destruction program online!" ~ nuuuuuu ;_;
Lots of Z.O.E vibes from the end... highly technological cities, enemies that look like Orbital Frames in CG, and the LEV-ish GL-type Grapals...
How i'm glad i'm not the only one thinking that. I was waiting to hear Jeuhty's voice for a few minutes there.
That was pretty obviously just a homage to him. :heh:
Yeah, especially being at the top and all. Still, i wonder be that surprised is something did happen.
Wow, this episode was almost better than ep 15, that's saying something.
Rossiu is clearly not evil after all, he just does what he thinks is best for humans. Nia is the ennemy, I think I'm going to love her now (yeah, I've always had a soft spot for hot evil women :D ), I wonder if she's going to stay evil all the way until the end.
Oh and I don't think anyone mentioned it yet, but there are beastmen living in Kamina City. Now I understand better why Simon's crew from ep 1 had a beastman in it.

Yup, I noted the bunny girls and cat girls and fish men.
Hmm
Getting the feeling that the introduction from the first episode will be in right before the final battle or series that lead to them. Didn't peg Rossui to pull such a movie around the time they introduced him, though I'm a bit more satisfied with him making his own faction. Simon's group conflicting with Rossui's and the Anti-Spiral System (?) all at once sounds like fun, wonder if he's going to "go down in blaze of glory" like his character sterotype.
Guessing from the opening scenes, Dari and Gimmy are the wingmen for the GL (unlike GL being solo through out the whole first part of the series). Well here's to hoping we see Viral piloting the Gurren in the future since Enkidu(?) has been demolished and a not so much bland finale.
Very awesome episode. It finally feels like the show has gotten some storyline to it. The last 15 episodes have been pure adrenaline and while not bad, it kind of leaves an empty feeling after watching it.
Lots of neat things about this ep.

Watched the episode and i have to say..........NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOO Nia
This episode gives me some eva vibe to it. I guess its because the weird unknown blocked shaped alien reminded of angels. Also, Rossiu is such a jerk right now. He reminds me of Gendou(dont ask me why :uhoh:). I haven't lost all my hope on Nia yet because there's always the POWER OF LOVE!(and courage).
Oh yea, one more thing after watching the preview....
WHY THE HELL DOES ROSSIU HAVE HELIX KING IN A TUBE!?
sigh... if you talk about 90s.. I always think of this thing... lol its by Sunrise, may be it doesn't count.
Its 1993.. miss it so much, can't find a place to buy it now too
and well the most famous title during the 90s is Eva (1995) no doubt.
off topic: Heh, I remember that show. I used to have the figure for the basball and soccer dude xD The mecha show i miss the most is Wataru(dont know how to spell the full name)

Not really. Doesn't look like the Engineering crew could duplicate the Spiral Power - the Grapals seem to be just updated versions of Gunmen.

i'm gonna say no
So fellow posters... your opinion on whenever Nia's take over orchestrated by an invasion or if it came from something within herself? I'm leaning more towards the second option myself due to the fact it seemed like if the moon was calling for her rather than taking over her, as if trying to reach her subconscious. Not to mention the small shining point from within her eyes as she saw the moon above her head in the sky.
Subarunyon

Nia's take over looks like it was an invasion from outside to me. It feels like there's another being / whatever on the moon as shown by the moon closeup. The rocket mission would probably reveal something soon too. I am half expecting a longinus spear, lawl XD
Why is it that the eyecatch shows Simon and Daryl instead of Simon and Nia? 0-O;; is this some kind of foreshadowing or just pure fanservice? o=
Loved this episode. Wasnt expecting the feel change, and I think it lost something from the previous 15 (Simon vs the cg mecha scene doesnt even have bgm! But overall the show is still a really good one. I do have problems with the cg enemy but it's not that bad, it goes well with the explosion thingie happening at the end. If it's trying to reference eva then it should've been animated instead tho, imo =x It think looks more like Vandread instead though. What year was vandread again?
Oh and Gimmy-Darry's plugsuits are colored like the ones from stellvia. then again plugsuits mostly looks similar anyway =b
i had to watch ep 1 again to reassure me of where this is going

Yeah, they have surnames now... well, Simon, Yoko and Viral don't.
But there's also the fact that the Helix King himself killed the Princesses the moment they asked him: "Why was I born for?"... that's pretty foreshadowing of this situation if we go backwards.
Sorry for being a female but I thought the scene with Nia explaining why she rejected Simon was extremely cute.
I know I should care more for the other scene but somehow this scene stuck with me the most. XD

There should be 10 more eps left, not 8.
I think having a sequel is a little lame. That means they'll have to leave GL open-ended and that might suck a little.
Anyway, for some reason the moon anti-spiral machine reminded me a little of Rahxephon's Mu alien mechas. Especially the way it shoots the laser beams at the buildings.

So, the "surnames" of people in the government are actually their village names? Why isn't Simon "Simon Jeeha" then?

Pre-orders, sorry about that. Just saying the first 4 DVDs are in Amazon's top 20 and the first was number one for the whole past week but was overtook today by 24's Season Set and now is second.

Dang... now I kinda regretted not placing my preorder. Sigh... it was either GL dvds or Japanese pc games...
Man, Japanese dvds are not cheap. Think I'll save up for Kara no Kyoukai dvds instead when they come out... hopefully. Or I pray really hard that I can still find some first-press GL dvds next time.
I'm really not sure how to take this episode.
I was very welcoming of a different setting and slightly different direction for the series. It all feels so rushed, though--not in that we've cut to this different scenery, but that from where we jump to everything is mashed together, with no time to really appreciate what's happening. It wouldn't be the first time the series has been this way, but it really hurts this time around.
"Evil Nia", "Nearly Evil Rossiu"... Potentially interesting, but I don't like them. At all. I want all that resolved ASAP. It's entirely appropriate that these issues would arise, but I will be mightily ticked if these folks that conquered all odds to come this far would be undone by all of this.

I gave the episode a nine. It was great, but nothing blew me away enough for me to give it a ten.
The new OP sequence is good. The spoiler scenes almost force the viewer to keep watching the show and breeds an almost imbearable impatience to see the story develop. I love the scene when Simon walks the path of light at the end while wearing his super awesome manly cape! The only possible problem with the OP is that it's the second verse of the same song, but the OP fits the show so I have no complaints.
It's surprising how much the world developed in seven years. There's hover-vehicles everywhere. They even created a space program and sent a probe to the moon.
The show's tone has become undoubtedly more serious. The conflict of ideals between Rossiu and Simon takes a huge role. They both want the same end, peace and protection of the people, but the means their attitudes are completely different. Rossiu wants to run the government efficiently as possible and is willing to use means such denying rights and withholding information from Simon. Simon is more tolerant and honest and is not willing to take such measures.
Adding to the seriousness is Simon's realization that rushing into battle won't solve everything. He did it against the new enemy and much destruction ensued from the aftermath. It was probably the best course of actions given the situation, but the fact that there can be severe consequences still stands.
The characters for the most part remain where we left them in terms of development - the exceptions being Rossiu, Darry, Gimi, Kinnon, and Viral. Darry is more outgoing now and Gimi is more mature now. Kinnon is much colder than she was before. Rossiu actually reverted back to his personality from when he was in the village. He's self-rightous, emotionallessly by the book, and inconsiderate of rights when they conflict with his goals. Viral acts similar to how he did before, but he's now a freedom fighter protecting the rights of humans - a far cry from the arrogant, beastman who disregarded humans excluding Simon and Kamina.
It seems that there are going to be three factions: Simon's faction, Rossiu's faction, and the Anti-Spiral faction. Simon apparently joins forces with Viral and the Spiral King. I don't know how that's going to play out, but it's probably going to be interesting. Rossiu's faction is a bunch of self-righteous punks who seem to believe that they're the only ones who know what's right for the world; they really piss me off, especially Rossiu because I expected more from him after his adventures with Simon.
Well, it's official. Nia has an evil side. I'm undecided as to whether this is good or bad. It has the potential to be very good, but it can turn out very poorly as well. Here's hoping for the best, and a happy end for Simon and Nia.
The new ED is pretty good. I like the sequence. The best part is Simon's cape! That thing is amazingly awesome!
Random Incoherent Thoughts
Darry is cute now.
The old guy turns out to be a beastman created to be Nia's butler. That explains why he saved her so many times.
Rossiu's reaction to Nia's lunchbox was funny.
Nia turning down Simon's proposal because she misunderstood the phrasing was hilarious.
Boota is still awesome.
Well, we have finally reached the CG enemy stage. Don't know if I should celebrate or not.
Kiyoh married Dayakka?! That's unexpected.
Kiyal (the one with the fang) is still very amusing.
Viral's new look kicks ass; too bad he still can't win a fight.
Rossiu's a jackass now.
Mass-produced Gurren-Lagann types make me sad; the Ganmen were so much more fun and expressive.

<-doesn't understand why anime fans seem to have beefs with Japanese CG. :heh:
...
Well, maybe I do. There are times when disgusting monsters like the 'mana transfer' badly rendered CGI dragon from FSN come into play, but that's a smooth beastie and Japan's skill with smooth stuff isn't all that great. Ryuk is probably the best looking CGI monster ever, and he's in a live action movie.
But even people bad at CGI can make in-animate objects or simple shapes look nice - I cannot imagine for the life of me why people were hesitant to watch Akagi simply because the mahjong tiles were in CGI. They're blocks! How hard could it be to make them look real?

I have no problems with CGs in anime, however bad they are. In fact I think the anti-spiral machines are pretty nicely done, the little triangles, cubes, globes make them seem very alien in GL and fit well as moon machines.
Hell, I thought Vandread was pretty cool when I first saw it.
I think most anime viewers now are spoilt by realistic 3d such as those from Dreamworks or FF7AC. They seem to forget it's just ANIME. Anime doesn't really need realistic 3d when much of it is 2d.
"So what if there's some not-so-nicely done 3d in anime, what's your freaking problem? Go watch Transformers Movie again if you want good 3d" Is my response to such people.
And I enjoyed watching Akagi. Since I'm more interesting in how the mahjong games were being played than f*cking scrutinize the damn tiles CG.

Not like Akagi's major force was the visuals rather than Akagi's own badassery in the first place. :heh:
And GL's CG aren't really that bad as they're mostly cel-shaded in look.

Am I the only one who actually likes government-douchebag!Rossiu? I find it refreshing that he's the more hardworking, jackassery one of the circle that didn't get converted to Simon-ism, who seem to be taking things rather lightly. Granted, some of the things he's doing does seem very "control-freakish", but I suppose it gets into him when he feels like he's the only one doing any real work in maintaining long-term order, aside from his own faction members of course. Kinon's colder change surprised me a little though. Well, in real life, siblings never always stay on extremely good terms once life comes into play, so at least there's some realism there.
I sure hope Rossiu doesn't die by the end of this arc, which looks like will give him a reasonable amount of focus, showing a contrast and conflict of approach and opinion between the 2 former GL-partner pilots, while dealing with Dark!Nia. Since chances are Simon will leave Earth to become Garlock for the 4th arc, maybe he'll leave Earth in Rossiu's hands, once Rossiu get a little mellowed down by Simon again?
i was rather disappointed at how the show has lost the feel that it used to give me over the last 15 episodes. but i hope the current arc gets better with this new setting. I really hope to see the good old gurren-lagann dan back again.. and of course im looking forward to the arc where the galactic battles take place

Holy... such a great episode. And, it's just me or the animation has improved?
Anyways, this was a very good episode. Humanity has really evolved in 7 years, and I'm surprised that some still want to live in the underground.
And the battle scene against the faceless robot(interesting how they say that they have never seen such a mecha :heh: )really reminded me about Xenosaga(right in the start of episode II).

No,you're not alone.I really like him, especially with his white uniform and his green band.At one point I hoped he would scream "Sieg Zeon"!
But I have my doubt on his sycophantic underling.Anyway,Rossiu's major weakness is his strength. He's almost the only one who take his task seriously among the top brass and it leads him to believe that whoever disagree with him is either a fool(simon and the brothers) or a traitor(see how he treat those who disobey).
Don't have much to say (never do) but I love the time skip and seeing all the characters and changes to the world seven years on. I don't mind Rossiu at all, seems to be a much more interesting character than before. Simon and Rossiu slightly remind me of the two main characters from sCRYed - what were their names again...?

Rossiu in this ep is like putting my face to an anus and breathing deeply.
Good episode, a few character change I disliked but mostly all good. Rossiu became communist!!!!
After seeing the grown up version of Simon, I was shocked when I realized he's the guy from the beginning of episode 1. Had originally thought that the beginning of episode one was a little hint of where the spiral power came from, but I guess I was all wrong and, instead it was Simon getting ready for what looked like to be the final battle.

Anyways this was an awesome episode. once again Gainax just keeps on surprising us more and more. Like other have mentioned Simon is still not quite as Garlock as he was in ep1, but he still have a quite a few episodes to change. I have a feeling Rossiu will be going downhills in they eyes of viewers unless he can redeem himself later on ala Harry potter Deathly Hollow style. With Nia, well she hasn't really changed that much but her dark Nia version is giving off alot of Dark Sakura vibes for me which could be good or bad. And of course the timeskiped Gimmy and Darry are definately a welcoming addition to the cast and i hope they can survive till the end.

This show rox.
Random thoughts of the ep:
Loved all of the character development in 7 years.
Bummed that Yoko disappeared and I hope she returns soon.
Rossiu needs to calm down a little and pull the stick out of his butt.
Anti-Spiral Nia was cool. Didn't see that one coming (besides in the new OP).
Its interesting to see everyone more grown up and serious. (who got married, who got serious, who's still the same, etc)
Commander Simon is awesome.
WTF is Rossiu planning (Genome in the tank, the youth crew)?
The Gurren Lagann still kicks major azz (even if the collateral damage destroys a bunch of the city)
Fitting that the 1,000,000th human would be someone so close to the core group.
Getting closer and closer to the space fight scene in the first 3 min of ep 1...
Kamina statue was hella cool.
Want Viral to spill the beans about what Genome told him now that he's in custody.
I wanna take Darry home, so 可愛い!
That's enough. Do I sound all giddy and excited? Well, I am dammit!
Just finished watching the ep, and i was really blasted away by it. The time skip was awesome and the characters even became more interesting. Rossiu is definitely a welcome change to the series. He definitely stands out among his happy-go-lucky peers.
But Kinon's colder change was a bit surprising and giving the stupid-twins a seat in the government did annoy me quite a bit.
There, completely caught up. Kamina City looks to be a pretty impressive place. If I didn't know better, I'd say that it was Tokyo or NYC. Though Rossiu's determination to prevent 1,000,000 people was a little disturbing and almost hypocritical. I was shocked when he said Simon wasn't supposed to fight. Without Simon and Gurren-Lagann, where's the justice?
The new entity causing more problems than solving them and taking over Nia sort of reminded me of the still-unknown entity in Mai-Otome Zwei. I highly await seeing where the series goes from here. Especially if anything comes of that moon probe.

Hahaha, nice episode. Anti-spiral eh? Seems interesting... they actually power up spiral power so the spiral entity will blow the anti-spiral entity into tiny lego blocks of doooom.
Maybe evil Nia is gonna power up Simon's drill and have him stab his powered up drill into her....
[edit]
Lol, i just noticed, but in the op where it shows Rossiu's gang.... doesn't it actually look like he started a "I Wear Glasses" Club with him being the leader and not wearing glasses, haha.
I can't give this a ten since it's not in the same league as the other GL eps I gave a ten to but it still gets a well deserved 9. I must admit I thought it might slow down a tad after the time skip to set the scene but they really didn't. Love the new opening sequence and I'm glad they kept the same song.
Evil Nia is hot, can't wait for Yokos re-entrance and omg @ the spaceship in the op from the first scene in the anime.
Yay ost nearly out too!
Finally, the third arc has delivered.
Well-crafted storytelling that delved quite shocking surprises and bending of loyalties.
I have read Omni's review for it, and I quite agreed to much anything that he commented.
I was frozen right from the moment that Rossiu strained friction with Simon's regarding their outlook on what's best for the planet.
I am worried and scared that actually Rossiu might become a potential antagonist into the storyline. He might not become or not a two-timer like Jin did to Sana on Innocent Venus, but it is scary his inquiry and longing for wisdom and earning the key to the mysteries of the world.
Nia surprised me the most, since none of us would have had expected she would become the spokeperson for the new enemy, and actually she or maybe her dark alter-ego playing an active role as part of the new enemy force bent to destroy mankind.
And I do see that Gurren-Lagann is borrowing a bit from Zegapain. Nia's skin bathed with digita, red carvings. Abyss and Sin had some carvings on their bodies.
Anti-Zegas were first and now we have Anti-Spirals.
Finally, Simon who walks his own paths and has quite adopted a few of Kaminas' traits.
If Kamina was to be still alive, he would not have himself restrain to stupid politic-shit. Instead, he would have had aim even higher. First, the surface and then head for the moon.
I have a feeling that what the 2nd OP displays, Simon would go that far than Kamina did.
And I know starting to theorize why did Helix King forced humanity beneath the ground.
Just think about it! How was it possible for humanity to advance both in technology and as a civilization to short seven years only?
They have technology to design their own mecha, cars, and to even launch rockets to the moon. Dayakka said so himself, that before the fall of Teppelin none of them knew what the moon was about.
And Helix King said once too Nia, that he liked dolls and long to preserve them as long as they do not earn an understanding of their surroundings.
Finally, Rossiu who is day in and day out pestering that the secrets of the world must be exposed, but to what cost and extent he plans to fulfill that goal?
The Anti-Spirals addressed to the world that humanity entered the second stage of danger of the spiral .
I guess the Anti-Spirals meant the warning that the population above the surface should had never reached the millionth.
As long as humanity remained underground, it was safe.
The reason is obvious. As long as people is put on a permanent situation on which they have to worry about survival through the rest of their lives without thinking on anything else, then they won't pay attention or focus their minds in understanding or doubting their existence for greater things ahead.
I think that for that to happen Lord Genome kept the humans underground but splitted them into separated and isolated village, whose population would not exceed the maximum number.
For example, 50 humans per village and that's all.
But with the Helix King gone and the beastmen reduced to second-class creatures or an almost-extinct race, humanity has risen to the ground and thrived to earn more knowledge that was forbidden for them to learn and increased their numbers.
I think that the reason is obvious. The Anti-Spirals have come to destroy humanity, because humans have become self-aware of themselves and their surroundings and will sooner or later enter war amongst themselves for selfish things as domination, wealth, power, and wisdom. And those wars will threaten and endanger the whole ecosystem of the world.

Well, Is it really mankind's fault at all? We still don't know who's responsible for oppressing mankind and why. This issue made me think of Scrapped Princess where a bunch of Aliens punished mankind by caging them in a suspended piece of earth and limiting their technology. All this to save planet Earth from mankind's pollution.
Come to think of it, Gurren Lagann third arc seems a little similar to Scrapped Princess now in terms of plot. Especially if there are Aliens involved.
Man, when I saw 16 I was irritated, but 17 is too perfect, makes up for that junk :D
It wasn't ever established what the total human population was, so I'd actually lean into the idea that there are more than 1 million humans total on the planet. The Helix King prophesied "1 million monkeys crawl on the surface" was the trigger, so it's possible that they were undetectable in the underground bunkers/cities. Otherwise you'd think that there would be more villages similar to Rossius where there was a population cap. Also, I like this idea cause Rossiu is being a high and mighty jerk about how the world should be run. If there are more than 1 million people total, his relocation project actually contributed to the Anti-Spiral extermination event. My fingers are crossed...
Nia as a sleeper agent is just to tragically perfect. Poor Simon is getting hammered in his personal circle of family. This is now officially my favorite series of the season. I can't wait to see how they tie in the last 10 episodes(unless there's more, I took this from anib) to the intro of episode 1, it'll be epic.
Simon needs to slap Rossiu down. Why have ministers and departments if you get bogged down in the details of government? Seems like a plot to keep Simon busy while he lays out his own agenda. Rossiu does seem to think that he knows better than Simon how the world should be run, and he's already been shown to be running operations that Simon wouldn't approve of. He's definitely going to be one of the major obstacles Simon is going to overcome before the series ends, whether as a misguided friend or a full blown antagonist.
This ones at musashiken:
It is similar in plot devices, I'll agree to that until more details are forthcoming. The major difference is the focus of the oppression. Scrapped Princess is kind of a rebellion taking place through the history, taking thousands of years to overcome the oppression. Gurren-Lagann seems to be following the idea that 2 people obtaining the same power can lead in entirely different ways. Subtle differences, but they are there.
This series is like Dragon Ball on speed. Instead of 3 series and 500+ episodes we're getting huge leaps in plot and characters in the blink of an eye. Rock on!

I absolutely loved and despised this episode simultaneously. I'm glad we finally got to the time jump, with all the character's so different now. GAINAX did really well on showing how different people really are when there isn't one single goal uniting them (defeating the Helix King). I love the fact that there are more or less 3 factions now. At the same time I really do despise the new Rossiu, he's a very welcome change to the old Gurren Brigade, but he still pisses me off =P.
As for everyones' new looks, I like the new Gimmy and Darry, very awesome. Rossiu also looks quite snazzy himself. I also like Nia's long hair again. I must say though that Simon's new looks are my least favorite. For some reason he just seems too klutzy. I guess it's hard to explain, but I was hoping he'd look cooler in the future. Then again, he is neither GARlock nor gotten his cape yet =P
All I can say is I can't wait to watch the rest of the episodes, so much could still easily happen. I can only imagine how ridiculously GAR Simon and the rest of the Gurren Brigade are going to be, and how incredibly awesome and pumped up I'm going to get from this series. I'm already shaking with excitement ^^
That raises a question I was wondering about. It was mentioned that the "Ancient Ganmen" were destroyed, and Gurren-Lagann is still around. But where's DaiGurren? I hope it's not rusting away in a junkyard somewhere. It's too cool for that kind of fate.

It was probably studied extensively then left to rust in away in a junkyard somewhere. :heh:
According to Gainax, the Gunmen weren't really all destroyed; they are "underground" (figuratively) as part of an illegal sport.

Took me long enough to get around to this episode, but here I am finally:
I like how they handled the time gap with this episode by having each of the characters transition into the position most fit for them, Simon as President, Rossiu as advisor, Leeron as the head of the science department, Viral as the renegade he always was and Gimmy and Darry as enforcers (Darry lost the glazed over look on her face as she grew older, but I wonder if she still has the stuffed animal). The idea to rename the capital city Kamina City and to immortalize the hero in a statue kind of brought a tear to my eye, they couldn't have handled that part better if they tried. Kittan seems to also be in charge of the military and we even saw the mayor from Kamina and Simon's old city. The real shocker was the 3 sisters and my favourite Kinon becoming such a militant and cold person. That was unexpected. And who would have thought Kiyoh's baby would be the 1 millionth human, I guess that is fitting as well. The writers did there job very well this episode. I also like the Grapal squadron and how it's to the Gurren-Lagann as the Sizzler Black is to the Gunbuster. Now that the gateway to the Tron universe has been opened (seriously that Anti-Spiral weapon was surreal as anything I've seen in a mecha series, it didn't look like it belonged on this plain of existence with it's neon polygonal and vectral appearance) and Nia has become some sort of mouth piece for the Anti-Spiral's and everything that Simon has fought for appears to be in ruins with noone to blame but himself, what will happen next. Knowing Gurren-Lagann fireworks will fly and I really have no idea. It pays to keep unspoiled sometimes.
