It hasn't been totally great IMO so far: Modest Mouse and Arcade Fire albums were pretty weak, as far as the big names go... but I'm liking the upcoming Animal Collective album (Strawberry Jam) a whole lot.
Deerhoof, Battles, Menomena... those albums have been getting most of my play so far this year.
I would say that a lot of artists new albums this year failed to live up to some of their previous works, like MM, AF, The National, and The Figurines of the top of my head but I still found most of them to be enjoyable.
I still gotta give the new Battles and The New Pornographers a listen along with a list of stuff.

The new Shins album is excellent. I'm also a big fan of the new The New Pornographers, Interpol, Arcade Fire, and White Stripes albums.
I'm a huge Wilco fan! I'll have to look through my music to compile a list

I heard that Bright Eye's Cassadaga fell below expectations. Still thought it was a solid album though.

Thats actually good news to me since Cassadaga is the first album of theirs that I've heard and I thought it was great.

Thats actually good news to me since Cassadaga is the first album of theirs that I've heard and I thought it was great.
The albums I liked from them most were Fevers and Mirrors and Lifted.
Their best album to date seems to be I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning.
My favorite so far is most probably World's End Girlfriend - Hurtbreak Wonderland. Other than that I found almost none of the albums this year of artists I've listened to before especially great. e.g. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank wasn't anywhere close to Modest Mouse's earlier works imo. It's similiar for Wilco, Explosions in the Sky, Do Make Say Think, Björk, NIN, Dark Tranquillity, Bright Eyes etc. I'm not saying that they're bad either, it's just that all of those artists made at least one much better album before imo.
But there's still stuff I have yet to check out as well, I'm holding high hopes for the new 65daysofstatic. ^^
Ah, yeah, there were two more awesome albums this year so far. Crippled Black Phoenix - A Love of Shared Disasters and Tocotronic - Kapitulation. I also enjoyed the new Melt-Banana and Boris with Michio Kurihara - Rainbow.
The albums I liked from them most were Fevers and Mirrors and Lifted.

Can't wait to listen to them. I also listened to The New Pornographers new album Challengers today and thought it was pretty damn good.
I concur with I'm Wide Awake It's Morning Being Bright Eyes' best album.
And now that I've listened to it I can say that I ain't disappointed with 65daysofstatic's newest work. The Destruction of Small Ideas is pretty great, comes close to The Fall of Math even.
edit: Oh damn, Tocotronic is just so awesome. Kapitulation may just be my favorite German album ever. Usually I'm the first to criticize German text, but those lyrics aren't just great....they're godly and beyond.
Well I guess you can chalk up another disappointment this year for Sunset Rubdown's new album Random Spirit Lover, I did enjoy it but it wasn't near as good as last years Shut Up am I Dreaming.
Morcheeba's Deep Diver more then made up for it though, It's amazing. Morcheeba + Thomas Dybdahl =:bow::bow::bow::bow::bow::bow:. It was also a nice surprise to hear Cool Calm Pete on a track.
Sharkey and C-Ray Waltz was also awesome, it's easily the best rap album I've heard since Lupe Fiasco.
Ah, I didn't even know Morcheeba were going to release a new album. Definitely getting it once it's out.
I didn't like the latest 65dos. They have yet to put together a really sharp and excellent recording that takes advantage of their sound - in fact this is easily the weakest-sounding of their albums - and the writing got more ponderous and boring.
They have yet to put together a really sharp and excellent recording that takes advantage of their sound...
I agree with that. While having made a few Songs that fully did that they have yet to create such an album. But I still like their newest one very much. It's no masterpiece but still a pretty good album imo.
Oh yeah, since no one else will have heard of this, I have to put in a shout out for the upcoming Pygmy Lush - Bitter River album... The CD is not yet out but I heard the cassette version. Sounds like Tom Waits and Jesus Lizard flailing around all over the place: noisy, acoustic, aggressive, lethargic, just everything wrapped in one with tons of personality.
http://www.myspace.com/roboticempire
http://www.myspace.com/pygmylush
Heh, my current most played is Susanna's Sonata Mix Dwarf Cosmos... but that's probably just the flavor of the week. Too be honest, most of the big name albums of the year were pretty average, specially Willco's.
Has anyone listened to Feist's new album "The Reminder"?
the cds i listen to most are bethany dillon imagination, barlow girl another journal entry, barlow girl how can we be silent, yui cant buy my love, crystal kay all yours.
I just listened to Switches - Heart turned to D.E.A.D. and It's pretty sweet.
Ulrich Schnauss - Goodbye also deserves a mention. Not quite as good as Far Away Trains Passing By or A Strangely Isolated Place but definitely worth the money.
i bet nobody has heard of her but she's awesome anyway.
Bethany Dillion- Waking Up.
nodame orchestra live

It doesn't matter if nobodies heard of her or not, the real point of this thread is to get people listening to artists they have never heard of or may have missed.
That being said I'll be sure to check her out when I get the chance.
I just finished listening to Mika - Life in Cartoon Motion. It's some very catchy power pop, I like. :D
i heard mika is good but i haven't heard his stuff.
So far it's been a pretty good year and it's not over yet!I don't know how good of a year this was compared to the previous years, since I am currently more interested in the albums from the past, but, anyways, your post did awake my interests. I checked some new albums (from a suggested list) and I can say they are really good, and not the kind of ones that will come and go, more to say longer. The ones I have checked and safely suggest are Eluvium's Copia, Patty Griffin's Children Running Through, LCD Soundsystem's Sound of Silver (a really crazy one, giving a combined but updated taste from the past, I enjoyed this one a lot), and Miranda Lambert's Crazy Ex-girlfriend. More to come soon, when I have the time to check a few others......
this one is probably a year old but it's good anyway Barlow Girl-Another Journal Entry, and their newest Barlow Girl-How Can We be Silent.
Anyone interested in checking the best albums for 2007, I suggest this (http://www.metacritic.com/music/bests/2007.shtml)site (I think it is a reasonable list, I checked a few more others on the list, and quite satisfied with them)... Below is their current list:

When it's about albums, rateyourmusic (http://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/album/2007) is a pretty nice site as well.
When it's about albums, rateyourmusic (http://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/album/2007) is a pretty nice site as well.Metacritic's list is more like a mainstream list, whereas rateyourmusic's list seems more interest oriented (a lot more on the alternative side). Anyways, even though the content and ordering is different from what you can normally expect, it still seems to provide valuable information especially if you are interested in groups/albums that are not listed by the general media a lot (maybe a bit like the difference between digitaldreamdoor and rollingstone/vh1/etc.).

i had very high expectations for last year and i was thoroughly disappointed.. but i am truely enjoying this year. and it's not over yet... i've yet to listen all the way through the new world's end girlfriend album.. or pelicans album.. and i haven't even picked up piano magic, rufus wainwright, or god is an astronaut.
Hmm, I don't listen to a lot of vocal stuff. I'm more instrumental. Throw me some film music and I'll be a happy camper! Anything by the crew at Media Ventures will satisfy me (Hans Zimmer, Nick Glennie-Smith, Harry Gregson-Wiliiams, etc). I also like old Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical music.
I guess being a filmmaker really dawns on me at times. Was I born 100 years too late? Hehe.

OAR - Stories of a Stranger
OAR has come out with their new sound, a unique blend of Roots Rock, and a bit of Ska. They've taken advantage of the possible type of music they could make with their new Saxophonist, and this record is pretty much them figuring out their new sound. Typically, OAR's lyrics on this album are incredible, notably The Stranger and Heard The World. In conclusion, this album has OAR in the middle of band development, and it makes for a very interesting record. The recording quality and mixing in great too.
Reel Big Fish - Monkeys For Nothing and Chimps For Free
After about nine years of complaining and warning listeners about the music industry, Reel Big Fish has been dropped from Jive records, and could finally make the music they want: third wave, full blown Ska songs, complete with barre chords and great horn lines. Aaron Barret doesn't let anyone down on this record, with decent singing and great guitar playing. Scott Klopfenstein on backing vocals, trumpet, piano, and accordion is nothing but great. John and Dan have come up with some of the most soulful horn lines I've ever heard in a Ska record. And of course, Ryland/The Rabbit has yet again proven that he is a great drummer. Even though Reel Big Fish have been dropped from the major label, they are more happy than they ever have been, and this album shows it.

I mean, come on. The album begins with a faux-horror monologue ending with "DEATH TO YOUR SPEAKERS!". With Lasers is just way too much fun not to give the nod to.

i like amy winehouse back to black? i think
mika life in cartoon motion
It is strange to see posts that mention Linkin Park's Minute to Midnight as one of the best of the year. After I saw its rating at 2 stars out of 5 at all music guide, I haven't even tried to listen to the album, considering it as a waste of effort (as I can dedicate to much better reviewed albums, above 4 stars).
After I saw its rating at 2 stars out of 5 at all music guide, I haven't even tried to listen to the album, considering it as a waste of effort (as I can dedicate to much better reviewed albums, above 4 stars).
Reviews are just opinions brought to paper by people who just so happen to be able to express themselves rather well (most of the time anyway). Which doesn't make their opinion any more valuable than others. If you know the reviewers taste and whether you can agree with it or not it's a different story thought.
PS: You were right about not listening to Minutes to Midnight, it sucks (well, surprise, surprise; it's Linkin Park after all).
i like feist too, i am not sure if she released a new cd this year or not, just started getting into her.

I'd say Motion City Soundtrack's "Even if it Kills me" or Arctic Monkeys with "Favorite Worst Nightmare".
Both are great CDs with some kickass tracks on them.
Not a big Radiohead fan, but I'm surprised no ones mentioned it yet... I will still listen to it though I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
I do however really like Black Kids - Wizard of Ahhhs.

It was not a great year for music this year, IMO. There were countless albums I was looking forward to this year, but most were disappointing.
you guys must listen to some obscure music or some pretty tame stuff to say this isn't a great year for music. i've truely been fascinated with it.
the new radiohead (who i adore) album albeit not their greatest (which i give props to kid a) is fairly decent. it's pretty simplistic and you can tell they followed a lot of what thom did in his solo (which is more electronic based). however, the few ballads on there are breathtaking and a couple tracks rip it up (bodysnatchers and reckoner).
but i would say that the most brilliant albums this year (imo) would be: arctic monkeys - favourite worst nightmare; arcade fire - neon bible...
i got this really nagging feeling that next year is gonna suck for music... i hope i'm wrong.
New Wu Tang is a massive disappointment, probably their worst album.

So I consider this the best album of 2007.

wow some ppl, with crappy taste...(avril lavigne pfffttt)
So you're claiming to have a monopoly on good taste? If you ask me, In Rainbows sucks and is one of the most boring albums to come out all year. But I'm not being an ass about it and proclaiming that you have bad taste because you like it. I'm not saying it's wrong to state an opinion but you could at least be more constructive about it instead of just saying "wow your taste is crap".
And, presumably you haven't even heard the whole album (neither have I, mind you), which makes your judgement nothing more than an assumption (just as I only assume that you haven't heard it - sorry if I'm mistaken about that).
Ah, yeah, since I'm posting in this thread anyway, might as well add another album which I hadn't listened to yet at the point of making my list: Kevin Drumm - Purge. An amazing record and his second best imo, right behind the godly "Sheer Hellish Miasma".

I'd like to state my opinion on this subject.
In Rainbows can be a very boring album sometimes, I agree. Some songs just don't hit all the way home, and when I was done with it, I said to myself, "How did that song get in there?" But some of the more boring, "polyphonic" songs on the record are filled with emotion, without having much emotion, such as 'All I Need', which I found to be one of the most powerful on the record.
And I'm not arguing your overall point, I agree actually, despite making negative comments about Avril Lavigne's album, I just found that sentence very interesting.
Yeah it doesn't really matter what anyone says is the best album of the year because it's all opinion anyways.
Unless of course it's a Nickelback album. :heh:
Beirut - The Flying Club Cup has been owning me lately.

I completely agree with Mueti. Don't be such an ass just because some people might have different tastes than yours. As cliche as it is, put yourself in their shoes and consider how it would feel to have an album/artist you like written off as having "crappy taste". I mean, how rude can you get?

I'd like to add "Bomb The Music Industry! - Get Warmer" to my list. It took a few listens to be as good as it is now, and damn it is worth it. Great DIY punk band, most their albums can be downloaded on their site.

Best Albums of 2007...
The Kin - Rise and Fall
~Definitely my pick for best of 07. Each song is a blend of musical genious. It style is like acoustic rock. The melodies in each of these songs make me daydream and get lost in my own world. The last few years have been big for me with music albums, but this one stands out as one of the best. Its a shame that they are not a well known mainstream band as one will have trouble finding the CD, so downloading is the best option. I highly recomend anyone to check The Kin out as they're a great band. Check out their songs on their Myspace.
Other great Albums
James Blunt - All the Lost Souls
Rascal Flatts - Still Fells Good
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
Kanye West - Graduation
Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos
The Killers - Sawdust
