Prediction:
The entire cast of Haruhi, Kanon, FMP!, Air and er I guess Munto show up and do their things in the Anime Tenchou store for the episode. Konata and Kagami argue it out and provide commentary for the episode while a hapless Tsukasa stands by fiddling with her new Giroro themed cell phone. Miyuki, Yui and Soujirou do not appear.

You *would* choose the Cheese Shop sketch (a kind of perverse version of the first episode's food conversation).

I reckon the ending theme would be another live action, this time from one of the main cast. Any other predictions on the ending?:)
that is classic... I was nearly crying with laughter
Not as "fun" as the last episode but a good episode for character build up. This was definitively a "Kagami" episode.
The Hiiragi sisters scene was very heartwarming. A+
You know, I'm just going to quote myself on this one. Because I said this back in the episode 15 thread...
I agree that it is losing its comedic value and even he didn't know what to do in this video. So either they are going to change anyway soon, or this was the last of the series produced. There isn't much more he can do anyway that would be hilarious anyway... except the opening.
...and it's still true.
Another amusing episode of Kyoani yaritai houdai. (京アニやりたい放題)
Very strange usage of background music in some places though.
Is Oyoyo~ a famous saying in Japan?
Nooooo..... Shiraishi's back T_T

Kagami episode is true.
A lot kagami air time, sorta talk centric, a bit of family drama, and Kagami looks lovely in sun setting lightings, but then again Kagami looks lovely in any lightings :heh:.
Konata's Birthday, and Lol 24 reference giving kyoani some credit for trying to branch out on the cultural reference a bit.
Someone more crazy/dramatic than Akira guest appear on lucky channel.
Shiraishi live... so not funny anymore, errr yeah it was like wtf lol the first time, "meh" the second time, and "ach" anywhere beyond.
Konata's Birthday, and Lol 24 reference giving kyoani some credit for trying to branch out on the cultural reference a bit.
I haven't watched 17yet but what I do know is that the show 24 is absolutely HUGE in Japan. It's probably THE most popular western drama in the last few years. Everyone knows about 24.

24 is an Oricon chart-topper in Japan, all genres included. That tells you how popular it is.

So anymore Haruhi reference?I think the magazine Konata was reading had Haruhi on the back cover. I believe Lucky☆Star was on the front cover.
This ep was a good balance to the last one. More slice-o-life than subculture. I guess that's why they ramped up Lucky Channel.

Thanks, I didn't know that; well in fact I don't know much about Japanese entertainment other anime and some live-drama show. I know that the US exports movies and certain show; I know movies getting some popularity is a given, but I didn't know any shows other than Baywatch :uhoh: would catch on outside the US. Good to learn cultural tibits.

The Hiiragi sisters scene was very heartwarming. A+I agree 100%. They made the whole sequence work perfectly. Highlight of the episode, for me. Kagamin is just wonderful in sequences like these.

Kagami Yoshimizu's cameo?! (Okay, not exactly. It's just her cat personification.)
Minoru's version of Motteke! Sailor Fuku (parody of the Youtube/Nico Video parodies)
Kagamin character development episode
Konata reading a magazine with Haruhi and Konata on each end of the cover; fourth dimension rips in half! (That would be cool if it really occurred. =3)
Konata mentioned something about a Pokemon monster. (It was bleeped out as "Po**mon")
Konata can't make it to her own birthday celebration. Yutaka = disappointed.
Cute memory of Minami and Miwiki. Minami taps her non-existent *cough* assets.
The appearance of the Nintendo Wii. Yutaka is so cute waggling the Wii-mote.
Anime Tenchou getting doused with water whenever he's burning up.
Tsukasa Hojo's "Cat's Eye" reference, done by the Hiiragi sisters. LOL! (OMG I'm OLD!)
All in all, not as crazy as the last episode, but it's still a winner nonetheless. Will rate when the fansubs are available.

adding more spoilers.
Kagami sure knows how to push Konata's buttons.
Kagami forgets her text. Lesson learned don't borrow from Konata.
Tsukasa's midnight snack? pretty sure she lost her appetite.

I'm getting tired of Shirashi ED too, but at least the song was from Lucky Star instead of Haruhi.
First time I've ever downloaded and watched a non subbed ep and despite not knowing 90% of what was said I still loved it (mainly cause of Kagami), and the Hiiragi sisters bit actually made me go 'awww' which I never expected to happen in LS.
Can't wait for the subs.

I couldn't agree more. I didn't really expect a scene like that in Lucky Star, which I guess made me feel even more warm and fuzzy inside. :)
Lucky Channel was great this time around too (well, for me, anyway). Lots of unexpected happenings this episode.

I was expecting to see Konata reaction to Code Geass season finale, since she is a hardcore fan of that show.^-^
And she wont read a book even if it has Haruhi on the cover.
Actually I know a lot of people that claim being Haruhiist and didnt read a single one of the books.
The Hiiragi sisters scene was a reference to Kaleido Star?

the end failed again this week...im beginning to hate his dam voice :/
This episode's Lucky Channel and Shiraishi's ED amused me. :D
Lucky Star never failed to surprise me... with all the live action endings...
The Hiiragi sisters scene was very heartwarming. A+
I totally agree.
Anyway, this was my first time watching the RAW and I think I understood around 50/60% of the show.
A nice episode with Kagami character development. And it might be because i didn't understand what they were saying, but the music during Matsuri-nee san and Kagamin little "quarrel" was a bit scary.
LC was very good IMO, I still love Anime Tenchou.
And I might be one of the only ones who loved that ending, Shiraishi still rocks! :D
But for next week, I hope we will see a main cast ED.

Kagami-sama FTW. If it weren't for yet another Shiraishi ED, I would have awarded this ep more points, so I'm giving this a lowly 10 instead. (Note sarcasm. )
The whole Hiiragi family scene was so sweet, it felt like a scene straight out of a great bishoujo game title. It was "un-Lucky Star-like", but who's complaining? Better that than all those god-damn references that sully the show, right? :D (Once again, sarcasm intended. )
Anyway, here's me highlights for this ep:
- 24!!! OMG, brings back all the memories. Man, I really need to renew my acquaintance with Agent Jack Bauer of the CTU. For all sorts of reasons, I've not been able to watch 24 since Season 2. (Here's another good example of how an original sketch from the manga can be improvised with subtle reference of a hit show. ) Wonder if Fox plans to sue Kyo-Ani? :heh:
- Career choices:
1. Couldn't properly hear what Tsukasa-chan's first career choice is, but her second choice is fashion and her third is marketing. (Imagines Tsukasa-chan making her own brand of designer clothings...... )
2. Miyuki's career choice is medicine, medicine and medicine. So no surprise here.
3. Kagami-sama's "boring" choices include science, economics and literature. Again, no surprise.
4. Kona-chan's career choices:
1 - Brigade Commander (LOL)
2 - Successor to the Fist of the South Star (Double LOL, see this link for why: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hokuto_no_ken)
3 - Storyboard artist
I actually think she has a good chance doing her third choice. :D Kona-chan also mentions her special skills include: memorizing the names of all the Pokemon creatures. She must've been singing the Pokemon rap everyday when she was young. :heh:
- Kagami-sama tricks Kona-chan into reading light novels. Good job, Kagami-sama! :)
- Poor Kagami-sama got framed by Kona-chan when Nanako-sensei discovers the graffiti on Kona-chan's textbook that she borrowed :upset:
- Kagami-sama rediscovering her handkerchief that she thought she lost in her summer uniform. That happened to me as well when it comes to switching seasons. When I thought I lost something in summer, turns out it was in my winter clothes, the opposite is also true. :D
- Whenever Yui-nee gets depressed thinking of her husband, as if on cue, he calls right away. Talk about "Speak of the Devil".
- I have absolutely no idea what's with the Hiiragi sisters in spandex suits with the cheesy 1980s disco music. But it was funny in a nonsensical WTF way.
- The sweet Hiiragi family scene as mentioned above.
- WTF at Anime Tenchou's cameo in Lucky Channel. Oh well, at least he didn't barge into the "main show" this time. Seems like "Shiroishi" got snatched by him from under Akira-sama's nose.
- Double WTF at yet another Live Action Shiraishi ED. OK, Kyo-Ani, now you're crossing my "line of acceptability" as well, so that's enough, thanks. (BTW, who're those two girls chatting in the back of the bus? One of them looks like Konno Hiromi, AKA Akira-sama. )
- WTF again at the preview, following a "Keroro Gunso" and "Kyon + Nagato" style preview, we now have a "Anime Tenchou" preview. Who wants to guess who's next? Nanoha? Code Geass? Gundam?
Overall, leaving the ED aside, I liked this episode as well. Take away the ED and Lucky Channel and I might fall hopelessly in love with the show, or many I already have.

While there's obviously a large contingent of people who hates the live action ED sequences, I'm in the minority that loves these. They're not really brilliant, but I laugh and laugh and laugh every time I see Minorun makes a fool out of himself. :D

I'm terribly sorry, but I usually write my thoughts first before reading through the thread. Please accept my apologies.
Ah yes, how could I forget Cat's Eye!? I used to watch that when I was young, but maybe I was too young to understand the story. I ended up treating the girls as villains and actually rooting for the cop who keeps on failing to catch the "Cat's Eye" trio, of which one of the sisters turns out to be his girlfriend. :heh:

Actually Shirashi is the saving grace of the anime for me. His antics are funny as hell. I am more annoyed with Haruhisque references or more like self masturbation which is done way too much in this anime especially in episode 16.
Second funny factor is Konata's father.

WTH? I saw some subs just minutes ago, speedsubs I think, and definitely not afk.
Anyways,
Kagamin FTW!
I loved the character development here, but I loved it when Yuu-chan was playing with the Wii!! Wii!! She looks so adorable as she's trying out the many ways to play with the Wii-mote.
I guess Konata got a Wii for her birthday, man I'd love to get one too, too bad it's still sold out here in the US.

I didn't encounter any problems when I was downloading it...
And the thing is legit, no joke subs whatsoever, so go grab it if ya can't wait for afk's.
I'll be keeping afk's for them quality subs though :heh:
EDIT:
Just got done watching those subs...
They're surprisingly good for speedsubs!
I can't comment on the translation until afk puts their's out but it was pretty good.
My only complaint is the quality of the subs, the font colors were a bit rough but they're still readable.
And now for a bit of trivia:

The "Guerrand" sub seems good to me. I've watched half of it, and haven't seen anything I thought was wrong, and have seen some neat ways of conveying things. The English is fairly natural-sounding, too. Good job.
I felt sad for Konata's dad and the others (T_T ) AND they were working so hard for it too!!!

Oooh and yes.

And Anime Tenchou is gone! W00T! If it was anyone that was tiring, it would've been him for me.
I actually don't mind Guerrand's subs. For a 36 hour job, it's pretty darn good.

great to hear that shiraishi is back...i prefer his endings...it never fail to make me laugh...
good old lucky channel...
I enjoyed this much more than I'd expected to. Some of the material in the previous episode fell flat for me, but everything seemed to click this week. Huge props for the Hiiragi sisters' scene; other than a certain piece of music feeling too austere for the mood, I found it beautifully done and touching. I think this is the fourth week in a row that we've seen Matsuri and Inori, and I can't complain.
Actually, every sisterly interaction in this episode gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. Yutaka cheering Yui up with a cup of tea; Tsukasa greeting Kagami when she comes home from the store and riding out with her to buy the ingredients for dinner... and even though there's no blood relation involved, you can throw in Minami's adorable memory of tugging furtively at Miyuki's clothes (they're even wearing matching outfits).
Quick hits:
Konata's ability to name every single Pokémon borders on artistry--there are nearly five hundred now.
Somehow it doesn't surprise me that Miyuki gets mistaken for an OL.
Poor Tsukasa; sometimes it's better not to know just what's lurking in the refrigerator.
I had genuine laughs at the Shiraishi ED. I don't think this quite beats the shock factor of "Ore no Wasuremono," but I found it pretty funny.
---
Lots of people seem to have confirmed the Cat's Eye reference on the bus (thanks to Xiaolang for that). I think I can identify the other fictional premise that Konata dreams up for the Hiiragi clan, because that bit about four daughters and a mother waiting for a father's return in the olden days of America sounds a lot like Little Women (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Women) to me.
At first I was kind of iffy on this--she doesn't read books, as this episode shows, so how would she know that story? But when I found out about the anime adaptations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ai_no_Wakakusa_Monogatari) from the 80s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wakakusa_Monogatari_Yori_Wakakusa_no_Yon_Shimai), it started making a whole lot of sense. With Kona-chan being the particular brand of otaku that she is, I figure the odds are pretty good that she's seen one or both of those.
---
@ below: Heh, I fail as a trainer. I put in my share of play time with Blue ages ago when it was first released in NA, but skipped every subsequent iteration and spinoff until Pearl. My memory and my Pokédex both have gaping holes, it would appear. :)

Konata's ability to name every single Pokémon borders on artistry--there are nearly five hundred now.I don't really think so. I could name a vast majority of them myself. Still not too used to the new ones but it's been out in Japan for a much longer time.
If you play the games, it's not too difficult to memorize all the names since you see them over and over. The ones that don't appear all the time are legendary, and you get those even quicker. I played Yellow, Silver, Gold, and Crystal; even now years later, I still have all of them memorized.

Well, the ED was watchable as they haven't been for a few episodes.
I see Kagami has done her share to improve Konata, though I'm not sure how much long term effect it'll have.
(I've always seen Konata as a very smart underachiever, and I think Kagami has, too. And she's always wanted Konata to live up to her real capacities rather than just cruising along.)
Did anyone notice the girls playing what looks like the Nintendo Wii?

Eh...I can usually only seem to remember the pokemon with good names. I've always had the feeling that they've been getting more ridiculous with each generation...I'm not even going to touch diamond and pearl, lol. Some names are pretty clever, though...
I think I'm similar to Konata in that respect. I normally have a fantastic memory of video game stuff (*remembers his days as an FFXI "scholar"*), but it's not quite as easy for me to tap into this immense reservoir of mental skill when it comes academics.

Was it me or the green hair silent chick has lesbian tones for the small pink hair girl? I can smell yuri themed doujins starring these 2 soon.
It's not just Minami and Yutaka, but I believe that Kagamin has the hots for Konata as well, though it's a bit one-sided.
Who knows, maybe Kagamin will end up with Konata at the end!

Ah, random note...I was watching the episode again...Matsuri's special dish looks like some tasty paella to me. I wonder if they have a Spanish restaurant near her college.
Ack, it's making me really, really hungry. :)
I think the magazine Konata was reading had Haruhi on the back cover. I believe Lucky☆Star was on the front cover.
It's the July 2007 issue of Comptiq.

I haven't watched 17yet but what I do know is that the show 24 is absolutely HUGE in Japan. It's probably THE most popular western drama in the last few years. Everyone knows about 24.
I saw that "24" part. I remembered that because of the sound effect. :D

Try doing both the JPN and NA names for every Pokemon.I'm working on it, but without playing the Japanese games it makes it harder to remember. At least some are easy: Pikachu! Zubatto! Pachirisu!
Oh, and I don't believe there's a Pokérap in Japanese.

Yes, Panzer Bandit, nice catch. Hiiragi-dad even said it was paella. Matsuri ate it with some friends and asked for the recipe so she could serve it to her family.

Those straps are pretty crappy... won't last very long on a teen's phone. But free is free and of course otakus will display it instead of using it. Man I hope I can buy computiq easily here.
It is a Paella, because Kagami has to go out far for saffron. Saffron is what give the rice the yellow hue... and yes I've made Paella before.
Not whole lot of cultural ref in this episode, so I guess my post maybe shorter...
I really like the focus on Kagami and the Hiiragi Family Dorama. The music, the lighting, and the mood - all spot on for a prime time dorama. Again to make fun of the otaku who probably has seen very little actual dorama. Man I love this family more and more...
This Shiraishi ending isn't THAT bad... if he's in cosplay probably funnier. :) He has 4 songs now... it looks like there's no way we'll avoid a Shiraishi ED CD... oh boy...
Animate Tenchou again... I'm beginning to think that Animate has signed a minimal appearance deal with L*S production comittee. It's like Tenchou-sama must appear in a pre-determined number of episodes or something. I mean, yeah he's a pretty cool character to parody and all, but boy he sure appears a LOT. And it's the same shtick every time - "Why won't Densetsu no Shoujo A buy my crap~~?" This L*C he's actually a little different, but still... I'd like to see less of him now, thank you.
If you want to parody an otaku-store mascot, gosh, parody Coco and Miko-chan from Tora no Ana. They're male-type otakus with tora-mimi; what more do you want?

That's why I enjoy Minami more now.. make her more.. human(?) than the other quiet type moe. I can't imagine Yuki checking her own breasts out. Maybe she's wild and crazy inside!
If this sisters "giving" things to each other is true... does that mean Yukata will be an otaku soon? I wonder what's going to be her obsession?

I don't think Konata meant it like that.
They absorbed stuff from each other. Kagami got all the smarts and academic drive, Tsukasa got all the home making skills and gentleness.
Yui got all the healthiness and happy go lucky attitude?
Miyuki got all the breasts.

I thought "sucking" sounds kinda bad.
Maybe now Yukata's "sucking" the lazy and the otaku-ness out of Kona, and slowly Konata's becoming an upstanding sister role model. It could happen.

Good episode, not as good as the last couple of episodes. The Hiiragi family scenes were spot on and offered unique content that hasn't been show yet in the series. We really have seen very little extended Hiiragi family coverage outside of the two youngest sisters.
Animate Tenchou was funny at first, now he's getting a bit old, does not need to appear in every episode.
ED sequence was meh, I mean it was funny the first time when he was fighting on the rocks, but now like Animate Tenchou it's getting a bit old.

Deathwing - totally agree ;)
I enjoyed the bit when Konata is watching the news and they mention how a criminal had manga and videogames in his possession. It still annoys me to no end how some people see videogames, or in this case manga, as a logical step towards violent behavior.
I also found Kagami's "they caught another one like you" comment amusing in a dark way, since in high school some friends told me this once (with no ill intent), and I have heard other people being told this in less amusing matters (religion).
Those straps are pretty crappy... won't last very long on a teen's phone. But free is free and of course otakus will display it instead of using it. Man I hope I can buy computiq easily here.
That's why you're supposed to buy 3 copies :D
I enjoyed the episode very much, but most of what I have to comment on isn't based on my positive impressions.
- With a brief exception, we're back to "classic" Lucky Star pace for the most part. Nothin' wrong with that, mind you. I was just hoping to see the pace from the last episode continued.
- It bugs me a bit that Miyuki intends to go into medicine. There's nothing wrong with that--I just don't quite see it in her personality. I wonder, do the Japanese have the automatic assumption/stereotype as many cultures do that smart people go into medicine? I grew up with the impression that medicine is a calling, but I know many others simply think "it's what smart people do". I just never got the impression of a medical calling from Miyuki's character, and I hate to see her status as purely a collection of stereotypes perpetuated. Either her character is a bit more hollow than I'd hope, or we're not seeing enough of it. Thinking about it, though... Miyuki as a general practitioner with a lab coat and stethoscope... That's kind of attractive... *shakes head* OK, that's enough of that.
- Yui + mustache = WIN
- I'm really surprised that Konata doesn't read light novels, even in her magazines. I know that the gag is that she's intelligent but lazy, but you don't gain intelligence in a vacuum. The idea that she doesn't read is just ridiculous.
- The Hiiragi family sequence shows us what Lucky Star has been capable of all this time. There's only one problem: It's style is completely out of place. I would like it if it weren't for that. You don't wait seventeen episodes and toss one sequence like this out as a non sequitur. I'll grant that I could be a bit more accepting if the music weren't so ominous, but music or not, doing drama, especially in this style, requires buildup.
- Is Animate Tenchou overplayed? Yes. Was I yawning during Lucky Channel? Yes. Did I enjoy the heck out of it anyway? Yes. It just needed to be shorter and snappier. "Shiroishi" was gold (I'm a sucker for puns).
In news tangentally-related to Lucky Star: I took my sister to her school for orientation, and was surrounded by a bunch of teenage girls who were *almost* young enough to be my daughters. I confirmed something I'd thought already... I can relate to Konata's dad.

This may well be my favorite episode so far. Perfect balance between source material, confined to the LS realm; and Kyoani's "pandering", as my friend Kaioshin_Sama likes to call it, delivered in the Lucky Channel skit. Of course, this comes together with the best delivery both worlds have shown so far, at least in my eyes: it was the best of manga Lucky Star and the best of anime Lucky Star (or perhaps Lucky Channel?).
Can some manga reader (Vexx?) confirm whether the dorama-scene is original or not? My bet is obviously original, I can't see a 4-koma there at all.
I gotta admit, whether or not the store manager is overused, this was the first time I have laughed uproariously at Lucky Channel. Generally I think it's a bit stale, with the exception of Minoru's Tsundere rant. So I honestly have to give the store manager two BIG thumbs up there.
Being the oldest sibling in my family of 4, I also have to admit to being more than a little bit familiar with some of the bickering between Kagamin and her older sister...
It was a pretty good episode, all in all!

Kyuusai: eh, why not medicine? She's kind, good in school, maybe particularly good in biology, we don't know... So why wouldn't she want to be a doctor? It's not such an extraordinary profession to want to have.
Though if she becomes a surgeon I do worry about a dojiko messing around with people's insides.

Medicine is a field that not only requires tremendous commitment just for entry, but the study and practice of which generally requires a certain personality and emotional investment. Miyuki is clearly very committed to pursuing a very serious, demanding career... but why?
Even Tsukasa's more flighty, easily understandable career choices were given an explanation, but Miyuki's serious commitment to a serious career path is given... no explanation at all. It could be that she has personal reasons to want to pursue it, or it could be just because "it's what smart people do". We're either missing some character exposition or the idea that she's nothing more than a collection of cliches is being cemented. The reason her choices irk me is because it raises those implications.
On a side note, I hope to study medicine when I have a break in my current callings. :)

Miyuki's at the top of a very good school. At this point, she could chose any white collar career she pleases. (I'm not saying she couldn't find out she's not suited for it afterward.)
It's not like everyone has a big story on why they chose the path they did, and "doctor" is a famous enough job for people to want to do it.
Ok, I have to admit I found this episode to be fun to watch. But man why do they keep "plugging" Haruhi so much? Is there any purpose to this? Was the creator a fan or is this part of 'Kyoto Animations' deal to show you the connection between the two that they were invovled with?
I had to laugh at the fact that of 'Konata' doing 'Haruhi' at the cafe. Just listening to her switch back and forth was great and at the same time funny as hell! As VA does both characters anyway. This show has a long list of references. I saw the 'Toranoana' building and 'Gamers'. Of course there's the 'Animate' mascot who's been trying to sell 'Konata' something. Of course I'm missing 'Yui' with her antics. But gawd 'Miyuki' and her mom. Good grief. Nothing like a little 'Lucky Star' before bedtime.

My objection isn't to that particular choice, but any choice where it raises the question of "why" without the "why" being explained. I only elaborated on medicine to explain my point.
Let's say Miyuki had instead said "I really want to build robotics engineer, so I wrote 'robotics engineer' in all three spaces."
Well, Miyuki is more than qualified to be a robotics engineer, but never struck me as the sort who'd want to design robots, so we're left wondering "Gee, what have we not been told about Miyuki?" or we just assume that since robotics is a stereotypical field for intelligent people, she's just continuing to be a collection of cliches instead of a fleshed-out character.
Why raise the question and then give no explanation, when we then go on to get an explanation of Tsukasa's choices, which demanded no explanation at all?

I think they had to put something, because Miyuki's the type who'd have thought about it and come up with a definitive answer before the papers were due.
As for "doctor"... I think it fits her caring personality and academic abilities.
Ooo neat episode. Kagami <3.
Missed reference opportunity: It would have been nice if the flags of the world that Yutaka has for the party had been the same as the ones that Lupin has in Castle of Cagliostro.

There is no connection between the creator of Lucky*Star and its manga to Haruhi. There aren't any references to Haruhi in the manga, nor are there appearances by Animate_Tenchou or is there a Lucky*Channel as such. There aren't any Initial_D or Da Capo or much FMP ..... well, you get the idea. People buying the manga looking for those things will feel misled.
Those are all injections by the animation team of KyoAni (whom have the Haruhi franchise). The manga of Lucky*Star reads kind of like Peanuts & Zits with splashes of Monty Python absurdities. Its a charming little story about a group of girls, one of whom is an otaku. :) Oh, Kona and Nanako do play an MMO that resembles an amalgam of real MMOs. They haven't messed with that.
In many cases, the KyoAni injections work pretty well because Kona is a modern girl geek and she tends to think, act, and immerse herself in the latest in anime. She *would* tend to think of some romance references (Da Capo) at springtime. She does work in a cosplay cafe (though its never shown so far) so dressing as Haruhi might makes sense. She would drag her friends to anime idol concerts. She would quote characters or mimic them in conversation.
So not all the injections are offbase... and a number of the anime-only sequences add to the heart of L*S (the extended temple sequence, the extended beach trip sequence, Kagami's FMP passion, the karaoke box endings, etc). But I think reasonable people would say that the animation staff has in several occasions gone about 30 seconds too far in some of their product reminders - particularly Haruhi and the Tenchou pieces. Lucky*Channel (which mirrors a real world radio show) has intruded substantially on the time budget for the series - it has been very funny but it has had an impact on the time budget left to the main story.
As you can tell, my feelings about the injections are mixed. Kind of... two slices of pie are mmmmmm good, but your host makes you eat five slices, so your tummy hurts and you're wondering about the good sense of your host.
Hahaha!! I guess that all makes sense. I have to admit it's really enjoyable.
Ok, I have to admit I found this episode to be fun to watch. But man why do they keep "plugging" Haruhi so much? Is there any purpose to this? Was the creator a fan or is this part of 'Kyoto Animations' deal to show you the connection between the two that they were invovled with?
Maybe KyoAni plans on doing Clannad before Haruhi season two and is using this opportunity of giving the Haruhists a bone. ;)
In Japan, the smart folks go into medicine. It's a highly respected profession and brings pride to the family if your child is a doctor. You get high social status and a good income. Come to think of it, I don't think doctors in the West get nearly the same respect doctors in Japan do. Many older folks still bow when they see a doctor in robes. They are called "sensei" often.
I don't think that's why Miyuki wanted to be a doctor, but it's normal for people getting top grades considering getting into medicine. I think it's a joke since she's afraid of even going to dentists office, and her boke personality surely puts many patients at risk. Hope she becomes something simple like a pediatrician.

Well, there is a Lucky Channel in Computiq by the same author. There's a strong link between L*S and L*C; they are all created by the same guy for the purpose of providing light humor and provide advertisements. There are no real link between Haruhi and L*S other than KyoAni, but my guess is the author has very little influence in the committee.
In Japan, anime is created not by the author, but a production committee made up of people who fronted the money. Usually they are the manga/novel publisher and the animation house itself. Sometimes, if the author is well-known and/or powerful, the manga-ka gets to be on the committee and gets approval rights for the scripts. They usually do NOT. My guess is that L*S being such a low-profile manga and Yoshimizu being a young first-time manga-ka, he has very little creative control over the anime scripts. Is looks like KyoAni is doing whatever hell it wants with L*S, in coupled with a LOT of "promotional considerations" for their own and Kadokawa. Yoshimizu gets very little say in the anime, I believe.
However, that doesn't mean they won't listen to him or his opinion won't matter. I have a feeling that the manga-ka knows about these additions and, being an outted otaku in HS, I am fairly certain he's also enjoying all these odd-ball otaku references. I think if he's shocked by anything , its the non-otaku things like the dorama parody or the ED song selections. But then, most otaku would feel unease with a Kimura dorama reference and that's all KyoAni right there. Personally I saw it as brilliant, since there's a huge gulf between the otaku and the mainstream and a little cross-cultural shock therapy is always funny. Vexx-sama, how much of these non-otaku references are in the manga?
I guess that's why I enjoy L*S's cultural references so much since it's hysterical to imagine what would the J-otakus made out of these references. For example, when I wrote EP16's Cultural References, the Japanese blog where I get most of my info from actually did NOT get the reference to Beat Takeshi's Medical Horror Show; he just wrote "talking in the manner of some medical show". It's one of the best rated show in TV, but the otakus live in a different world.

That answers a lot, and it's something I had suspected, but had no evidence for. Thanks! I'd cookie you, but The System says I've done that enough for the time being.
There are some examples of that in the US that I am aware of. In some Korean and Jewish households here, there is the assumption that if you are intelligent enough, you WILL be a doctor. Period. Law school is for wash-outs who have no hope of medical school. Along those lines, doctors get a tremendous amount of respect from such families. A Korean friend of mine has a lot of family and self-confidence issues after he decided medicine wasn't the path for him. :(
(That isn't to stereotype Korean or Jewish people. It's just that, in the US, I haven't heard of that mindset being in any other social group).
I'd just never had the experience to gain the impression that also happens in Japan. I'd heard of legendary arrogance from many Japanese doctors, but not of the social factors involved in going into medicine. If there is such a social pressure, that means this isn't just Miyuki adhering to a cliche or choosing a profession without proper exposition to explain, but is a very natural choice for her character. I'm happy with the scene now that I'm no longer ignorant of that. :)
I personally don't think medicine should have that elevated social status. It's just like any other applied science. The reason I didn't go into medicine was after years of hearing about unbelievable stupidity and arrogance in the field from those who had to work it (You'd THINK eight years of rigorous schooling would weed the idiots out, but apparently not...). I'm only now considering going to medical school in the future because I want to be able to practice in the mission field... but this is really off topic, so I'll stop there.

You can call anyone you respect "sensei". The sense of respect is usually due to expertise/knowledge (doctors, teachers, etc) or social status (members of diet, etc). Today the term is usually used when someone is a recognized expert in the field, thus many would call even manga-ka sensei. Strictly speaking, a "sensei" is someone who has something to teach you and you're showing your respect for him/her.
It's a term that came from Chinese Confucianism, where the term meant "Born before". In ancient China, learned people (basically pepole who can read) are highly respected, and those who offer to teach it to the unlearned are called Sensei. The respect for teachers emanate throught out East-Asian society, and this term became a designation of respect for all learned individuals.
Incientally, the kanji for "sensei" means "Mister" in modern mandarin Chinese. Anyone who's a dude is called so and so "sensei". Hence this is an ancient Chinese term, not a modern one. This is a common point of confusion for Chinese learner of Japanese - "why did he just call his female teacher "Mister"?" :)

I think i get what you mean now. What i'm trying to say is its continuous usage rather than its origin. Just like what i'm really interested is who else is generally referred to as sensei in Japan these days, something along the line like is a vet a sensei? Tezuka probably won't be called a sensei hundred years ago in Japan. ;)
By the way, speaking of its origin, it's probably in 禮記, though don't quote me for it, but like you say, that's off topic.

why was there special thanks for SOS dan in the ending credits ?
its not like there were any haruhi parodies in ep 17
I personally don't think medicine should have that elevated social status. It's just like any other applied science. The reason I didn't go into medicine was after years of hearing about unbelievable stupidity and arrogance in the field from those who had to work it (You'd THINK eight years of rigorous schooling would weed the idiots out, but apparently not...). I'm only now considering going to medical school in the future because I want to be able to practice in the mission field... but this is really off topic, so I'll stop there.
There's a general tendency to confuse the ability to memorize and stubbornness with the ability to solve problems :)
The way medical school is structured tends to reward the first ability.

Yes, in Chinese society nowadays, "先生"(xiansheng) simply means "mister".
The term used by Chinese to address a (perceived) master of any profession is "師傅" (sifu). (Pronounced "see-foo" in Cantonese and "sh-fu" in Mandarin). That's the equivalent of a Japanese "先生" (sensei).

Heh, I remember being slightly confused over that when I first took Japanese back in freshman year of high school. It's sort of annoying when the meaning of the Chinese characters I learned back in Chinese school don't really match up with the corresponding kanji in Japanese.

The ability to memorize, that used to be super important for medicine, used to be, before the days of computers and internet! ;)
It's just that the information age has caught up to this particular profession.

Unfortunately computers and the internet does not follow you into the test room.
Anyways, I couldn't imagine someone like Miyuki being a doctor, spacing out and medicine just doesn't mix for me.

Okay It's time for my ref list again... I think I'll do a general culture post and an otaku reference list. Again, this list composed of info from various internet sources including this excellent blog, and my own knowledge about everyday J-culture. Sugu Hajimari!
Otaku Crime
AGAIN L*S features TV broadcasts relating to otaku-related crime. I'm pretty sure its a form of self-parody, but I'm not sure how many otaku actually find it funny in Japan. The first case the Konata and Yutaka saw on TV should be the world-famous case (http://www.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idUST30108720070515) of the teen who beheaded his own mother, carried it to an internet cafe, and then turned himself in. Yeah the kid was found with lots of manga and games in his room. Of course the media went wild about how his otaku-ness cause the crime/etc... The joke here is rather dark... Read the news and watch the segment again. :)
I'm not sure exactly what incident Konata and Kagami was talking about sepcifically, but what I do know is that during the first part of 2007 the news media and blogs was focusing a LOT on "harmful" manga. There was news about police raiding bookstores and proposals to ban "harmful lolicon shojo manga". They could be talking about these incidents. You can read a lot of about it in this English post (http://comipress.com/article/2007/07/17/2307).

24
The sequence in which the Izumi family prepares for Kotana's birthday bash is of course parody of the hit FOX TV drama "24". Jack and friends are so big that even Crayon Shin-chan parodied it. Okay, you say "so and so is big in Japan", what does it really mean? Well, if a Hollywood celeb does one of these, then he or she is "big in Japan". Jack is SO BIG and he does a bunch of them in a MINI-SERIES way. That's BIG.

College Major Declarations
HS kids in Japan has to decide exactly what major they want to go into during their 3rd year in HS. This is because unlike the US, when you enter a Japanese college you go into your major right away. What the girls are doing is actually picking not only the major, but exact college which offer those majors. They are doing this because in order to get into a good, public college, a student has to 2 tests - a national administered test and a test administered by the college that's based on the major. For example, to get into Todai, you need top grades from the national and Todai tests. The system in Japan is one of the hardest in the world. The declarations are important, because your declaration plus your score decide if you get into to your school. For example, if you're Kagami and you picked law or economics or , you can't decide to apply for a medical major AFTER you've discovered your grades can qualify for a medical school. Thus, these sheets can decided your future career, and you have to do it when you're just 17.

Kaiten Zushi
Kagami like to pick fresh items when visiting cheap sushi places called "回転寿司 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conveyor_belt_sushi)", where you eat by picking sushi out of a conveyor belt and pay by the plate. She's so seasoned....

Ito Yokado and Otsuka Kagu
When Kagami and Konata was arguing about Light novels, they were standing outside of stores called Ito Yokado and Otsuka Kagu (Furuniture). Ito Yokado (https://www.iy-net.jp/nsmarket/shoptop.do?shopcd=00175) a "General Merchandise Shop", similar to our Wal-mart or Target, but it also sells food items as well (open 'til 11PM!). Otsuka Kagu (http://www.idc-otsuka.co.jp/showroom/showroom_f.html) is a major furniture showroom and it's diagonal from Ito-yakado. It's the backdrop when the camera is facing Kotana. Both are famous Japanese chain stores, and both are right outside the Katsukabe JR Station.

FamilyMart
The store in which Kagami forgot her to bring money to is the 3rd largest Convenient Store chain in Japan (behind 7/11 and Lawsons) called FamilyMart. (http://www.family.co.jp/english/index.html) FamilyMart is famous for its technological innovation and they have stores in Korea, Taiwan, China, and Thailand. The one she visited is probably the 東鷲宮店 location near the Washinomiya Jinja. Yes, 2ch otakus are already adding the poor store to the "Holy Site" list. If I were them I'd put a life size display of Kagami right outside the store.

Octopus with Wasabi
The food item Tsukasa was looking for in her PJ is a specialty food item called "タコ山葵" (tako wasabi). It's chunks of octopus marinated with chopped wasabi. I've not had this one but I've always dipped cooked octopus pieces in wasabi soysauce like a sashimi. It's good!
Oishi...i?

Oyoyo!
The sound Tsukasa made after she discovered the censored food item is a reference to a famous Japanese professional rakugo artist (rakugo-ka) named 桂三枝 (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%A1%82%E4%B8%89%E6%9E%9D) (Katsuka Sanshi), Rakugo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rakugo) is a older form of story-telling art that is the precursor to today's manzai and other comedy formats. It's basically one guy telling a funny story. "Oyoyo!" is an expression made famous by Katsuka Sanshi.

Tanshin Funin
Yui-nee-san is crying about the fact that her husband has to perform Tanshin-Funin. 単身赴任 is when the husband leave the wife and family behind to take a job in a far-away location, sometimes even out of the country, for an extended period of time. The husband will then live in company housing while away. This happens because Japanese companies tend to train employees by sending them to various part of the operations for a period of time before given them more responsibility, so a salariman can often expected to be called to be stationed at a remote location for a year or so. Due to short length of stay and the firm Japanese belief that uprooting family is bad, the husband often go by himself. This practice has created huge social problem of husbands/wifes cheating on each other during these stays.
Tokyo Walker
The magazine Matsuri was reading while waiting for the twins is the July 3, 2007 issue of "Tokyo Walker (http://www.kadokawa.co.jp/mag/tw/)" magazine. Tokyo Walker is a young people mag about what's cool in the greater Tokyo Area; there's a walker magazine for most major cities in Japan and in Asia. Usually you want to find out something cool or a great place to eat, you'll pick up a copy of Tokyo Walker.

Paella
Matsuri-one-chan made a very traditional Seafood Paella (http://www.eatpaella.co.uk/seafood_paella.asp). It uses saffron to create the orange-ish color of the rice, and that's why Kagami was late looking for it. Saffron is rare and expensive. One of my favorite dish to make, since it was so simple. Also, the fact that the older sisters order the younger ones to run chores are quite normal - older siblings get to order younger ones around, but Kagami isn't liking it one bit.

Kagami's New Book
Kagami wanted to buy the latest book by somewhat famous author 山田真哉 (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%B1%B1%E7%94%B0%E7%9C%9F%E5%93%89)(Yamada Shinya) called "食い逃げされてもバイトは雇うな (http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/4334034004?ie=UTF8&tag=yamadashinyak-22&linkCode=as2&camp=247&creative=1211&creativeASIN=4334034004)" He's famous for writing about the intricacies corporate finances and accounting, being a licensed accountant himself. His book is actually more about economics, and since Kagami wanted to major in econ, it make sense she wanted to buy the book.
Looks like a dry reading...

The torrent still works for me.
We don't really know why. You'll get a better answer if you contact Guerrand themselves.
They changed trackers (nyaatorrents.org no longer responds to web or tracker requests.... either their server crashed or worse) and the new tracker location hasn't updated on the tracker collation sites like AS or baka-updates.
If you go directly to the Guerrand fansub website, the updated tracker is there and works fine.

I thought I was totally fond of hearing Nanako talk but snaggle-toothed Misao-san just explodes my brain. Patricia-san ... her VA is catching the "American teen speaking Japanese" fairly well -- she'd fit right in with the 3rd/4th year students my son knows.

Well, I finally got a chance to see this episode. Let me just say this: this episode has definitely cemented Kagami-sama as my favorite character of the show. I'm almost tempted to participate in SaiMoe for the first time just to vote for her.
For me, this was probably also the funniest Lucky Channel since Shiraishi's tsundere rant. And the sped-up part of the ED just made me crack up completely. I'm still not sick of Shiraishi yet.

off topic, about modern education
well, apparently it's pretty tough to get a good education and in Japan the system it very strict. Perhaps the most flexible system is in the us where you can apply for different universities.
Here in Russia things are a little bit more complicated but people who are about to finish school still have more options than japanese guys. You don't have national tests. Basically when you get your certificate you just hand in papers in the university (or college if you like) to take exams for the major of your choice. If you get less points during exams you can still quality for a different major within the same faculty but some universities do not allow to do so.
Getting into a prestigious college is difficult so high school students usually attend additional classes during their final year, universities have preparatory courses for entrants. That means you have to plan in advance. Personally i didn't attend any of these, i just passed exams and that's it.
On the whole the system looks like this:
you start going to school at the age of 6 in this manner:
-Elementary school - 3 years
- Middle school - 5 years
Compulsory education ends here.
- High school - 2 years.
This way you get into college at the age of 16.
So when I was 17 I was already a 2 year uni student and japanese guys are only choosing their major.
College - 5 years (specialist)
But nowdays western practice is introduced so you can study
4+2 years to get Bachelor's then M.D.
Otherwise you proceed further to
graduate course (3 years) to get a Doctoral degree.
Then if you're extremely smart, 2 more years for Ph.D.
off topic, about modern education...]
Thanks for info; I think it's pretty neat you guys get to enter college early. In Japan the system isn't THAT bad, I was only talking about getting into college. There's a very supportive vocational high school system here in which you can learn a trade as early as 15; job placement support after these schools are pretty decent too. The Japanese government really cares about employment rates, especially for young people. The college system there are based on elite system, where only the brightest get into college, and the rest of learns a skill. It's model after Germany's system I believe. Now days employment among young people is rising and entry level jobs are decreasing - instead of laying off people, many Japanese companies simply stop hiring for perm positions. Many college educated women never gets a chance to even get a permanent jobs - they have to stay temp for 5 years before being considered. Thus now there's an increasing problem of NEETS, where scores of young people just get by by working at odd jobs and sleeping in manga-cafes or hop between friends.
Life in Japan is difficult, but there once was a guarantee of life-time employment and other securities after you've suffered through school. Now even that is gone, and many young people are can't face the pressure of adulthood. That's why many choose to become otakus... the fantasy life offered in anime is so much better than reality.
did [a.f.k.] stop subbing lucky star?
they usually released eps weekly now its nothing :(

Thanks for your reply.
offtopic - continued
Surely judging by the economic performance the education system is pretty advanced. But the difficulty to get into college is to my mind a drawback. Here a lot of people tend to get into college. Though the situation is far from perfect. The quality of education seems to decline while the number of educational institutions increases. Still for me the the studies were pretty tough. I personally graduated last year, that is quite recently. What i learned about japan came from some outdated textbooks. Basically we learned that the japanese economy is based on the pillars, among which is life time employment but only for ceo and such. It seems that the number of part time jobs (baito) is increasing drastically nowadays. Personally I think that the achievements of the us in creating work places are worth taking into account.
What I wanted to ask is do you know about post-graduate studies in Japan. I'm kind of into this thing at the moment

Love the 24 reference and the constant pokings between Kagami and Konata. The Lucky Channel corner and the ending were hilarious with the remix of the intro by Shirashi and the manager having his take on Lucky Star and what anime should be (and the fire hose bit).

One of the few disadvantages of having separate threads for each episode is that, when a double release comes out, one can't comment on both episodes in a single post. Oh well... since the alternative would be a big giant mess of a thread with some ~4000 posts, I won't complain too much.
I'm starting to wear of the mediocrity this show is serving up. I didn't enjoy all that much at all from this episode... the majority of it was boring, and the one half-interesting scene at the end with the Hiiragi family ended with a generic, tepid sappy moment. I would respect this show better if either it was all sappy moments like that, or all comedy, but it tries to be both, and the quick transitions from one to the other (like the sudden transition at the end of this particular scene to a light gag about reading manga) are always too jarring and clumsy. It's not just something that's happened in this ep as well, it's endemic of the entire goddamn series, and it just makes me think that this show isn't sure what it wants to be and ends up executing both its components of comedy and slice-of-life insipidly.
Damn this episode was boring. When Lucky Channel is the most entertaining sequence in an ep, something is very wrong. Needs less Shiraishi as well... the gag has gone stale. Not that this show has any grasp over when to stop running its gags into the ground. Now for the next ep.

The animation was above average longer than usual.

I didn't enjoy all that much at all from this episode... the majority of it was boring, and the one half-interesting scene at the end with the Hiiragi family ended with a generic, tepid sappy moment.
Wow, unusually harsh. I for one loved the Hiiragi family scene, especially since it gives us a glimpse of how the elder Hiiragi sisters interact with the twins. As for the "jarring" transitions, isn't that mostly because this anime is based on a 4koma?
Well, in any case, I liked this episode as much as every other episode of Lucky Star. Self-referential humour is always fun and good for a laugh (loved the ED!). :D
Different Strokes I guess... L*S in Japan also has this polarizing effect on otakus.
Well, for me, watching that scene made me wonder what if they made a "Yuri-themed" Renai-game out of Lucky Star where Konata is the protagonist; and then converted that into an anime series. :heh:
It was enjoyable to watch, but at the same time, rather unsettling as that is not really what Lucky Star is all about. Good content, but wrong context. I treat is as a "what-if" scenario in which we see the possibilities if Lucky Star had been from a different set of material.
Cheers.

Exactly. I found that scene more of Nico Nico Douga parody material, not to be actually shown in an episode. It would be immensely profitable for KyoAni to make a spinoff series out of Lucky*Star after the fact though.

Finally got the chance to watch ep.17 (About time)
I gave it 8/10.
Key parts of the ep(?)
-The first thing that got me was Konata's theory on how sisters' "absorb" traits from each other. I didnt think that Minami grew up with Miyuki-san. Cute. LOL
-Konata finally turns 18. "Happy B-day Kona!!". \(^w^)/ Guess she can now enjoy 18+ games legally. LOL...and there she goes denying that she has ever played any. ^^;...she still looks nothing like her age though. I can completely understand how Miyuki-san is mistaken for an older age. Hell, if she was an actual person I'd treat her like she WAS older than me...I mean technically she is mentally older than me. LOL. Its good that Konata doesnt want to let go of her inner child. ^^
-As for Yutaka, Yui-san, and Izumi sensei preparing the party, nice "24" reference KyoAni. b(^_^)d...too bad it didnt happen.
-As for the group's future aspirations, who'd have guessed all their choices. Miyuki-san and Kagami is so...set on reality, Tsukasa just goes with her dreams, and as for Kona...too much dream. It slightly worries me that in her final year of school she hasnt changed much. I'd like to see SOME growing up done within the series.
-Konata's idea of a "family cast". Was the four sisters scene a reference to anything?
-Kagami vs. her older sistsr Matsuri. The first time I felt uneasy watching LS, the tension between the two was too much. Good thing that they made up later. Made a great heart warming moment, good job KyoAni. b (^_^) d
Moments I enjoyed
-As for Konata's newly revealed talent...AMAZING!! But for the same reason Kagamin stated. LOL
-Yutaka plays the Wii. Cute
Lucky Channel
Anime Tenchou as the guest!? NICE!! The BEST LC yet!!

I also didn't like Shiroishi's lame ending credit rendition of the OP... but whoooweee the remix of it on the Lucky Star OP Single - Motteke! Sailor Fuku Re-Mix001 album is really good! :D
I hereby declare him redeemed of this sin.

Hahahaha!!! I had the chance of checking out both albums.
I like the original version of course. But I also enjoyed some of the other songs on the album. Usually I don't like every song on a single aside from the main one. Aside from some of the remixes there's a song called 'Knee socks' that I liked. So I DEFINITELY gotta pick this one up for myself.
As for the 'Re-Mix001, I only liked some of the songs. Some of the dance mixes are good but then there's times when they're not always worth a listen. Maybe if you were on drugs or something. So I can say that I maybe liked 2 or 3 out the whole album. I'll have to think about picking up the remix album. Thing the only reason I may consider it is because of track 2. It's mad crazy fast!! :p
Next time they do a con dance they'll have a new song to add to the list. Last time it was 'Haruhi' dance now it's 'Lucky Star'.
Yeah, 'Shiraishi' is a pretty annoying.
The song used when Kagami was emotional and left to buy the ingredients.. it sounds eerily familiar to a song use in either Kanon 2006 or AIR. Can someone help me out, did they just ripped it from one of those shows or is it an original.
Also, can someone tell me the name of the song?

Is it just me ... or ?? On this episode .. when its Konata's birthday,
do you notice that after her birthday (like the nxt day) She is VERY
tall ?! lmaoo ;D I was trying to figuree it out .. & alot of people agreed
But..isn't she short again by the end of the episodee ?? :P
I don't suppose you could pick a slightly darker color.... its quite difficult to see that faded pink against the default beige background.
Her height seems to vary a bit during the series based on the "needs of the moment" somewhat like some anime women magically get more busty in some scenes. :P
