View Full Version : Shinigami = Angels?

Did Tite Kubo base the shinigami of the Gotei 13 on the angels in religion?

(Subject to Change, Under Development)

Considering their role in the story as protectors of Soul Society and balancers of the spiritual world being similar to that of angels, I believe some shinigami could have been based off certain angels. The most obvious connection is between the captain shinigami and the archangels.

Comparing them and drawing their closest equivalents:

Archangel Michael = Hitsugaya

- Both are supposedly the most powerful of their kind (Gin says Hitsugaya was the embodiment of the heavenly guardian), and serve as military field commanders (Hitsugaya choose to be stationed in the real world against the Arrancar threat).
- From Hitsugaya's character, he is very chivalrous, and Michael was named as a patron of chivalry.
- Appearance-wise, Hitsugaya grows a large pair of wings when he hits Bankai and is very young. Michael is depicted with wings and a youthful appearance.
- Hitsugaya can control water/ice with his zanpaktou, Michael is associated with water.

Archangel Gabriel = General Yamamoto

- Yamamoto's zanpaktou is fire-based, Gabriel is associated with fire.
- Gabriel is the chief of the angels. Yamamoto is the captain-commander of the Gotei 13.
- Gabriel is a messenger from God. Yamamoto, as the captain-commander, seems to be the only shinigami who has some direct connection to Soul Society's King or method to reach the King (e.g. knows where the King's Key is).

Archangel Raphael = Shunsui/Unohana

- Raphael is associated with wind, Shunsui's zanpaktou is presumed to have wind-based abilities.
- Raphael is a healer and protector. Unohana is obviously a healer, Shunsui is not the kind to kill, but rather protect; when facing Chad as a ryoka, he offered not to fight him and he stopped Nanao from harming him.
- Raphael is the angel of love, joy and light. Shunsui's and Unohana's characters are those of people who are joyful and loving.

Archangel Uriel = Byakuya

- Uriel is associated with earth. Byakuya's zanpaktou is named after a tree from the earth. To activate his bankai, he must drop his sword into the earth.
- When Byakuya performs the final and most powerful form of his bankai, he gains wings and a halo around his head, similar to an angel.
- Uriel is the angel of repentance, and hence is seen as pitiless. Byakuya nearly sent his sister to be executed to follow the rules, and has been depicted as an outwardly emotionless and uncaring character.

Archangel Selaphiel = Ukitake

- Selaphiel depicted with fish, Ukitake's zanpaktou resembles fishing javelins.
- Selaphiel is depicted in an attitude of humble prayer. Ukitake being ill is often humbled over.

Fallen Archangel Lucifer = Aizen

- Lucifer was an angel of light. Given that Aizen's zanpaktou can create illusions, he is therefore manipulating light.
- Aizen is attempting to lead a revolution against the King of Soul Society and believes he can create stronger entities by making arrancar.
This is much the way Lucifer, driven by his own pride, tried to lead a revolution against God.

This is as far as I have gone. If you can find any other connections, all the more power to you. ;)

P.S. If Aizen can be associated with fallen angels, and he's one who has fallen by pride, does that make Isshin, a former shinigami, a fallen angel by lust? He did have Ichigo and family by Masaki who was only human. That means Ichigo is a Nephilim (offspring of angels and humans).

There is a small possibility, but not impossible. Rather, i found that most of them were not so directly comparable. Seems some of them are compared for the sake of comparing though. Rather to say that the characters are based on angels, id say most of the characteristics that are based on the angels are pretty normal shounen characteristics ( someone who wants to revolt, etc. etc. )

I'd say yamatomo and aizen's comparisons are pretty convincing though.

Not to sound condescending, but I'm sure you'll be able to find similarities in almost everything if you look hard enough. Also, Christianity is hardly widespread in Japan. Of course, I may be wrong, but I stand to be corrected. :)

Thanks for your replies and feedback. To warn you, this is an ongoing thing I'm doing, so some of the comparisons have yet to develop.

I noticed after watching the Bleach series that there were several similarities to things in the Old/New Testament; e.g. the incantations of the Kido, what I've mentioned about about shinigami and angels, etc.

So out of curiosity, I wanted to take a look around and see how strong the similarities were and, if possible, see if anyone else could draw parallels.

I really enjoyed reading that. It may be all Coincidence but that is quite an interesting thing.

In fact if ya ever need help I would like to give ya a hand this seems like it could be fun to do.

And Christianity was noticeably and influence in Death note so it's not impossible it could also be here as well. Quite intriguing if nothing else.

Bingo, you don't have to be Christian to enjoy or borrow from a Christian tale. ;)

Well, can you tell me what the angelic heirarchy means? And which are higher in rank, Cherubim or Seraphim?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_angelic_hierarchy

There are 13 Cherubim and 14 Seraphim in the old testament; 13 captains in Bleach, 14 if you count Isshin. So which ones can be compared to the 13/14 shinigami captains? (Or is it possible that one of the groups is analogous to the shinigami vice-captains?)

And do the kido chants have any reference to the testaments?

no-one in bleach has angelwings?

Well, Hitsugaya gets wings when he goes bankai, Byakuya gets wings and a halo when he does the final form of his bankai. What's not to say the other captains have similar transformations when they do the same as Byakuya?

Isshin isn't a certified captain. At any point of time there are only 13 official captains, so that should be the number taken. Besides, if you consider non official captains, it would be 15, with urahara.

I see, and counting Yorouchi, etc. would make for way too many. :p

Nope, thats a common misconception. ;) Yoruichi was never a captain. She's just just the head of the secret guards ( or whatever they're called, omnitsu kidoushuu ).

Eh, I thought shinigami means, Death God? I'm pretty sure that the similarity is purely coincidential, like if you study it closely enough and compare each and every detail to find the similarity.

Otherwise I don't feel that it has anything to do with Christianity. It deals more with the Japanese belief of the afterlife and reincarnation. Even more so, I think the concept leans more to Buddhism.

KT is Japanese . Main religons of Japan are Shinto/Budhism . And Bleach has absolutely nothing to do with Religion.

Yeah thats an excellent point . Its never been mentioned she was the Taicho of Scond division .

Her Rank was Keigun or head of Onmitsukido. Also she is the 22nd generational head of the Shihouin family . She may have been a Taicho but its not known hers skills are taicho level or a notch above if you ask me

Pretty interesting theory. However, if that is the case, then, what angel or creature whould you associate Ichigo with? He is so young compared to the other shinigami yet he was abel to beat some of the most powerful.
