Title: Cencoroll
Premier: 2007
Production: Anime Innovation Tokyo, LLP
Animation: Atsuya Uki
Official Website: http://anime-innovation.jp/sys/works.php?itemid=7

I thought it was a movie at first but it seems it could be an OVA as well....the reason for this is that I checked AniDB and they've put it as an OVA....not too sure. ;)

Plot:

A sudden advent of an enigmatic creature pushes the world and our young heroine, Yuki, into the realm of surreal.

(~taken from AniDB~)

Cencoroll Trailer: - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9GtU3xwLBQ

This how this movie came coming about: -

“For talented animation creators who want an opportunity to create and distribute an ”original work,” ”ANIME INNOVATION TOKYO” offers funds and equipments. Producers belonging to ”ANIME INNOVATION TOKYO” take care and advise selected creators to make pilot films. Production span is about six months to a year. Basically, the pilot films should be based on ”original plans” from the creators. Any form of animation is possible. We will accept any animation style if we feel that it brings out the best of the creator’s style, and we can offer equipments within each individual project budget. By the spring of 2008, we will select 20 creators, and team up with them to establish joint-venture groups (JV) with LLP, ”ANIME INNOVATION TOKYO” etc., to make pilot films together.”

(~taken from Anime Innovation Tokyo main site~)

Cencoroll is the first one to be selected. A trailer has been released, which I've put a link to above. Apparently, the first episode or the movie has been released at the moment. ;)

The trailer looks really good (btw...I like the BGM in this trailer!! XDDD)....its giving me some FLCL and Bokurano vibes. The guy going in the big fleshy thingy reminds me of Reideen in a way. It looks really interesting!!!! XDDDD  The fleshy thing also reminded me of the last scenes of Akira. I'm getting chills that this might be a Mind F*ck!!!:heh:

The trailer is truly amazing. Atsuya Uki's a real talent to watch.

However it's shame there has been no new information or material since the first (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=802271&postcount=1202) time it came to light. It's still in development hell it seems...

Wow the trailer was very good and yes the music is awesome. I gotta a weird Akira vibe from that for some reason. Well hopefully this will get out of "development hell" and get off the ground, it looks very promising.

The thing is "ANIME INNOVATION TOKYO" helped produce the pilot film but untill some sponsors show up, the project will not expand to it's final form movie or tv series, i don't know what the director as in mind. I sure hope someone will be interested in this project one of the best looking on AIT line up.

When you pertain to the pilot film, do you mean the trailer? Because I think it's very possible to write an OVA even with a budget that's not too large. It's only one episode, after all.

After almost two years of waiting, I'd like to see this one come out.

So, finally it seems that Uki managed to find a sponsor.

The trailer from TAF 2009 has been posted on the official site (http://www.cencoroll.com/movie2.html).

I'm still finding it hard to believe that this was entirely animated by Atsuya Uki himself; the quality is just too good.

Visuals look absolutely stunning the animation crisp and nice background score to compliment it . The plot looks interesting and simple. One of the major problems with sci-fi is confusing vexing plot which makes that vein in your head pop BUT luckily this one looks relatively simple .

Somewhat reminded of Girl who leapt through Time w.r.p to character design and art : ) Definite must watch

The new trailer doesn't show anything new aside from one or two small scenes. But, it's still great to see of course.

In addition to the trailer, the website (http://www.cencoroll.com/) is showing a lot of new artwork and information. There's also a release date for the upcoming CD by supercell.

It definately look really good. I'm interested what ryo/supercell did with the music, almost all of his songs had vocals (that is if you count Hatsune Miku as vocals).

I didn't know the B-side on Kimi no Shira nai Monogatari single was the theme song of this. I really liked LOVE & ROLL, it's one of those really surprisingly good B-sides (lets say most people don't bother with a good b-side).

When is the OST out?

Just got back from NYAF, managed to see this. Sadly my eyesight sucks at night. :( Oh well.

The animation was pretty good but I kinda feel it could have used some directorial work. Some scenes were sorta like, "Okay... where's this going now?" I liked the story and concept though. I want a Cenco as a pet. :D

They turned off the audio halfway through the end credits though. Pity. Wanted to hear Love & Roll...

Also maybe I just zoned out but I swear there was a really cool scene in the trailer that didn't show up in the actual thing. The part with Cenco turning into an airplane...

Was pretty decent. Especially worth watching just for the backgrounds and animation. What we got in terms of story was right up my street, and i like how it keeps what you want to know covered up, and just delivers what you see. Nicely done.

My opinion

This short 25 minute feature feels more like an artistic summary of an average children’s adventure series than an actual full story. You probably know that many series get their own movie version a few years after they ended (like X-tv or Escaflowne). Well, Cencoroll is actually just the movie. The series feels like it was scrapped. Because in only 25 minutes you see things that a normal series would spend 12 episodes depicting. So, the plot is not just fast but is also feels like it is skipping a lot of events. It is after all part of a project to aid upcoming new artists and not some major funded mainstream anime aiming to sell like crazy.

Visually, Cencoroll is very pleasing. Everything feels like it was painted with watercolors and oil paints and even the outlines of the characters are not clear outlines. This gave to the feature an artistic feeling most suit for fluid animation. The setting of the story is a generic Japanese city and a typical school yet the colors made them feel special. Plus, half of the duration is battles between transforming critters. The action is very well done with lots of vitality and attention given to physics. Also, the monsters have a plethora of attacks that are not just laser beams that blow things up (a cheap way to show big explosions without actually animating anything) but grabbing and throwing objects, jumping, transforming and running. The same thing can be said about the characters, who although don’t do anything extreme still have a very pleasing body language most titles sacrifice in order to save money by making still images.

Acoustically, Cencoroll remains at the basics. There is almost no background music heard in the entire duration with an average pop song during the ending titles reminding you what you were not listening to all this time. I feel like the producers decided to leave out the music just to make the viewers focus solely on the characters and their talking. It is a neat trick but it takes more than that. The dialogues and the story were never anything special so the absence of music does help you to sympathize with the characters more while at the same time making you feel bored in case you want atmosphere. Beyond that, the voice acting was decent although as I said, the context of the dialogues was pretty standard stuff you see in stories with teenagers pairing with monsters, so it still feels blunt.

In the same manner, the story in Cencoroll is a fast forward summary of an average children-paired-with-monsters story. If you have seen Pokemon or Narutaru you know what to expect. Two kids control monsters and decide to have a showdown. How they found them or why they fight is almost not mentioned so all you are left to see is them fighting before the feature ends in an almost tie. Yes, it is an open ending, leaving room for a sequel. What must be made clear is that there are no other people present besides the main characters. The city feels empty even when the army stars bombarding the area. There are no bystanders running around in panic amongst all the destruction the monsters do. Well, there is one who just closes the window so big deal. Just like the music, the world in the feature seems to be given no attention so that the viewers will focus solely on the characters.

Speaking of characters, the cast in Cencoroll is pleasing to watch albeit generic. It is very interesting to see them moving and talking to each other with the lack of music or even a background story not distracting you from what they are doing. Still, their motivation is very blunt as is the reason they fight or acting so cynical all the time. This feature is so esoteric, you are supposed to do nothing other than looking at their mentality but not at their reasoning for being as such. The whole deal is basically four people, two males controlling and fighting, one female that keeps interfering for no given reason and her schoolmate female friend who is essentially not doing anything. So I say this feature wins in terms of portraying its cast in a wonderful way but does a messy job at actually explaining why they act the way they act. Maybe it is a pilot to a future series, maybe it didn’t matter for the producers. No matter the reason, the cast is nothing more than pleasing archetypes.

In all, Cencoroll is pleasing to watch but quite a bother to actually rewatch. It is so short and simple that you have little to gain by watching it again. Still, the first time will most likely please you to the most part with its artistic depiction and esoteric approach to its characters.

That was rather interesting. I actually found it insanely hilarious at times, believe it or not. What totally made it work for me was the completely deadpan behavior of the characters and the minimalist use of camera movement and BGM. The whole thing is utter absurdity presented in a completely matter-of-fact way, with no effort whatsoever to explain any of it. That dichotomy worked for me.

Hmmm, it was pretty good, but I think the first trailer seemed so much better. It was weird that the first trailer had footage not in the movie. Too bad it was too short, add in 30-45min more of character backstory/explanation and action scenes and it would have been much more awesome.

Yeah. Precisely why I don't like it when they're one-shots. It seems almost all short anime suffer from lack of proper exposition and they go for the zaniness or just mind numbing visuals. Not that it's all that bad for it.

More or less a complete story, if you don't need to know where everything came from. Good music (ryo/supercell, who did the Bakemonogatari ED). Excellent voices -- Hanazawa Kana, Shimono Hiro, Kimura Ryohei (Takizawa in Eden of the East) -- creating interesting characters. That's enough. I don't need any more.

Cencoroll in a nutshell... cock tease.

LOLOL. So true.

I don't have too big a problem with shows not having complete stories and all, but to me, a sci-fi sort of lends itself to at least try to show off its world and how its world works. That's the cool part of sci-fi. The world that is so different from ours. It's just happens so that we really only did get a small taste and I have to sort of side with the folks who almost feel like shortchanged since there was potential for more.

Then again, one of my favorite short-series efforts is Alien Nine and fans of that OVA + Manga knows how mysterious the backplot still is even with the manga involved. But even that effort was longer and more fleshed out..

I don't see it in the Japanese material linked to from the first post. In fact, "school life" is also a bit misleading, lol. This is fantasy, it seems to me. And excellent animation. And an interesting character, in the girl: why is she so bold?

Maybe the "auteur" is an animator, not a story-teller, and wasn't that concerned with filling out the context. I thought he did a pretty good job of implying a big enough picture to make it meaningful, but the larger background really wasn't there, for sure.

SuperKnuckles
2009-11-17, 03:29
I think it sorta didn't help that in the context of things, apparently the big monster and its user were on the attack before the show's events and apparently the issue isn't done yet afteward either. But again, shows like Alien Nine did the same exact thing and it turned out to be pretty compelling watch if for the brief window we get to see into that world.

In fact, I think a ton of anime OVAs and short series do that quite a bit.

I think there could definately be a series in this down the line, feels like there's alot to explore and explain. I feel this was a very good set-up/introduction to quite a unique and interesting world. I liked it, hope we see more in the future.

With the ending having his arm replaced with cenco and yuki with control it feels like there's real efforts to bring the main cast together for some hilarity if there's any future work installments. Also the open ended nature of our villain's survival pleased me, purely because, well he's a good villain, he didn't pull any punches and went directly with his agenda, sneak attack with a spear made from a pylon and all :P

Something I forgot to mention before that I found quite curious (in a refreshing sort of way) in this short movie was the bizarre apathy and boredom the characters employ. That might be saying something about Japan's youths (or youths everywhere in general), it might not. However, I thought it was interesting and absurdly funny (Narutaru this ain't); the quiet atmosphere certainly fit the tone.

Well this is one of those things that was pretty nice to watch, but definitely leaves you wanting to see more. Feels like this could have been a special intro to a series. The way it ended definitely felt like it could go into something more. Gave a taste and that was it.

Poor walnut. :(

Anyways, I agree with the someone who said this resembles more of a fantasy than a science fiction. The only thing sci-fi about it seems to be the electric-powered remote control ahoge, while the rest is about monsters beating the crap out of each other. Cenco is still adorable as hell though; long live internal beauty!

Nonetheless, I suppose I don't regret spending those 26 minutes. The animation was, of course, beyond all of my expectations, and the interactions between Yuki, Tetsu, and Cenco were hilarious as hell. Despite the lack of music (or perhaps because of it), the show felt surprisingly immersive, allowing me to enjoy the story even though I don't know what in the Sam Hill is going on.

If a Cencoroll series is going to be made in the future, I'll definitely be watching it. :)
