Minagoroshi finally starts.
Death to DEEN if they find a way to screw it up.
I hope they followed the excellent development of the last arc to make this one better. It'd be a shame if it didn't meet/exceed expectations now. :\

^ if DEEN stays faithfull with the original arc, there is no way they could screw the expectations. Minagoroshi-hen isn't considered as one of the best arcs of Higurashi for nothing ^^

Isn't Satoko the girl Rika loves?
Excellent ep. Starts with a bit of recap of the first season, but I think that really sets the dramatic change when...
K1 beaks fate giving the doll to Mion. It's so cute the way Mion reacted to it too.
But what's up with Hanyuu? She seemed to be upset that Rika was eating things Hanyuu didn't like.

Is this BGM brand new or is it from the second OST? I never listened to that one.
I'm still vainly hoping for some arranged songs of dai's to make an appearance :)

Minagoroshi-hen Prologue... Rika consciousness explain to us, the various points in higurashi, the worlds as each time, someone goes mad etc. Very fitting point to grasp the past, and the future Rika will encounter. As she is finishing her explanations, she invites hanyuu to follow her.
Rika fell from a cliff. everyone get worried, and rush at her. Rika quickly stop spacing out, and call forth hanyuu. As soon as she appears, Rika asks instantly which day, month and year they are. Hanyuu panics, and the result (sorry, couldn't pull it, and not sure if it is exactly the same from the game) doesn't please Rika. Hanyuu is worried because they used their power a lot, and it becomes shortned by the time it is used.
Keiichi and the gang arrives and ask if rika is well. Rika then wants to talk to keiichi, and asks if he remembers of anything, especially the Watanagashi. Unfortunately, Keiichi doesn't get it, and says he will be a first timer with the festival. She then asks if he remembers that he was once on the rooftop of the school. Keiichi is more puzzled, and everyone else wonders what it is with her. Rika is disappointed, but soon reverts her genki nipaa mode, and assures she is okay.
At night, Black Rika remembers of Keiichi's miracle, and also Rena's recovery, but Hanyuu says they did it more than hundred times, and this kind of miracle won't happen again. [can't get the rest of it...] Rika is silent, then suddenly shows up a pepper pot (or spicy food pop) and begins to eat a tons of it. As result Hanyuu panics, and begins to feel the burn (literally). Rika finishes her off with her glass of wine, which makes Hanyuu feels extremely sick. You can tell Hanyuu shares some perception of Rika's body, and so must "enjoy" whatever she eats :heh:
Then, rika wonders whoever among Keiichi, Rena or Shion will turn crazy in this world...
Next day, in the morning at the Irie institute, Satoko received her injection by Irie, while Rika kept company with her. After this, Irie asks Takano to give the usual "quiz" for Satoko. Hanyuu will keep an eye on Satoko.
Rika asks Irie if Satoko will be okay. Irie assures her there is nothing to worry about... however, whatever he does, satoko is still in her LEVEL3 (L3), there is nothing he can do to dampen the effect
Meanwhile, Satoko must answer what represent a ink stain on a paper. Takano jots about what satoko answers. Irie is confident, and claims he will do his best to cure satoko completely. Rika believes in him.
Satoko finished the quiz, and is complaining why she always does that. After that, Irie and Takano join the chibiko, and Takano gives her a small bag, with the medecine and injection she must take each day. Satoko accepts it gladly, and say today there will be a special event. Takano asks if they need to be escorted, but Rika doesn't want to bother them in their job, and they will leave the both of them. Irie goes mad with his MAID HEAVEN mode, and wonders what will be the batsu game today, showing his COLLECTION of maid outfit, available for use (he even has the good size for the chibiko!! Of course, Satoko and Rika tries to decline it quite politely :heh:
Keiichi meets up with Rena and Mion by Bicycle, late as usual. Keiichi wonders where are Rika and Satoko. Mion said they already went first, and they will join them. He then asks what kind of place it is. Mion said it will be fun.
Rika and Satoko are in front of Mion's uncle toy shop. Rika is depressed and both her and Hanyuu predicts the result of the day.
Keiichi; Rena and Mion are there. Keiichi wonders why there are so much kids in front of the shop, and maybe it is a special event. Mion confirms, and the prize is 50.000 yens. Satoko hears him, and goes greet them. Rika is pained.
Mion explains how the event could be organized. She of course warns that everyone must do their best! Rika is still struck by the usual fate show, but she is quickly called by satoko, very excited by the challenge. Keiichi wonders why they can't know which game they will be assigned, but Mion says it will be more fun like this. Rika sits down, and Hanyuu reminds her that she shouldn't hope much about this. Rika relunctantly agrees with it, and knew it already. Keiichi then notices Rika, and wonders what's wrong. Rika says she is a bit fed up, and knows what will happen. Keiichi is then curious, but Rika quickly withdraw her statement. Keiichi asks if Mion explained her what are the games.
Rika then says to keiichi that she knows who will get what game today. Keiichi is very interested, thinking it was expected by the Furude Miko. He then asks her if she can tell him what game mion prepared.. She then claim the game will be some card game then says where she will be assigned, same for Okamura, keiichi, etc. Keiichi is very interested and is impatient to see it.
Mion's uncle presents the game, which confirms what Rika claimed. keiichi is really surprised on this. Then mion put down a box, with numeroted papers, for the assignation. Keiichi is a bit worried, and asks what is this. Rika then says it is keiichi's turn. Keiichi picked 3, which again confirm what Rika said. Keiichi is completely dumbstruck. Keiichi then understand that Oyashiro grants her the ability to foretell the future. But rika corrects him, saying that fate is already decided, and it cannot be undone by anyone, either her or him. Keiichi doesn't give up, and says he will prove her that he will simply beta the crap out of the Fate.
Keiichi is able to change the game they will play, using some excuse. It is changed for some "pop up pirate", but with a huge strawberry , forks and a doll on it instead the usual barrel, knives and pirate.
Keiichi then talks to Rika that if she wants to change fate, she should do it simply like this, etc.
It is 3PM, and Mion decides to stop the event. Mion apologizes, saying she has a part job now.
Then the uncle arrives and present a speical prize for Keiichi, which is of course the doll of doom. Of course, Rena wants it, while Mion tease Keiichi. Keiichi is about to raise his arm. Rika wants to prevent him to proceed, but to much her surprise, Keiichi gave the doll... to mion ! Mion tries to refuse it. But keiichi says it will suit her girly side, which touches her a lot. Rena is very happy with this as well. Rika is completely caught off guard and cannot really comment this change.
Once mion leaves, Hanyuu pops, and comments about this change, surprising her as well. Rika knows this doll is the trigger for Shion's spiral of madness, and remembers the events of Watanagashi-hen/Meakashi-hen. But keiichi changed the result of the world. Rika decides to not give up, and she will do her best to shatter the fate this time. This episode is an excellent adaptation of Minagoroshi-hen.
So far, many points and hints, which will be decisive in the end.
I'm a bit concerned that Rika didn't mention the Rules (or maybe she said so, without the usual X Y Z?), and probably 1-2 dialogue between her and keiichi. But basically it is really a good paced adaption here.

She did mentioned them at the beginning, but it was a very brief summary of the rules, without naming any of them (so no X Y Z, DEEN was afraid of confusion maybe)?

Episode 6: Summary, Thoughts and Screencaps (http://animehistory.wordpress.com/2007/08/10/higurashi-no-naku-koro-ni-kai-episode-6-minagoroshi-hen-1-meiro-no-housoku/)
it is really too late for me for the summary, it will be added very soon, as always.
EDIT: Summary is finally done !
Well I guess it can't really help that DEEN has speed things up again. Okinomiya shop scene change is understandable, since the anime version for season 1 is already different. However, things did happen a bit too fast, from Rika's despair to Keiichi's KOOL scene to avoiding Watanagshi-hen death flag. Thus it made Rika's emotional roller coaster ride a lot smoother that in the game.
Also, they cut out a whole lot from the intro. Maybe they are trying to fit that into Matsuribayashi-hen instead, but it's definitely something that should not be cut.

It covered as much as I thought it would with the exception of the prologue. I was surprised they left any of that. I didn't expect the rules to be explained because it would take too long to thoroughly explain them, especially Z. But I definitely think a 6 is far too harsh. I think you're expecting too much. The anime can't go by the game pace or it would take forever to get anywhere and there's only 18 episodes left to cover the rest of Minagoroshi and Matsuribayashi.
Rika and Hanyuu are connected, so Hanyuu feels the effects of whatever Rika eats (or in some cases, doesn't eat).
Tazusa Sakurano does the same thing to Pete Pumps in Ginban Kaleidoscope, although in her case at least she likes what she's eating.
The rules should've been explained. This is one of the elements that makes the main part of Minagoroshi-hen so good. I guess I'm just not too happy that DEEN seems to be cutting stuff as much as they can, and from this epsiode I just fear that since Minagoroshi-hen is somewhat tied to Tatarigoroshi-hen (which is the arc that DEEN butchered the most in season 1), that it would probably recieve the same treatment when it comes to certain parts.
Minagoroshi-hen is my favourite arc out of all of them, after all.

I dunno, it's always disappointing to see something left out from the game, but I feel like DEEN is doing the best they can with the time they're alotted to try and tell a story to fans who may not have played the games. There's a lot of info in those games and an info dump may scare off some viewers.

Well i believe the problem is Minagoroshi require a tons amount of episodes to build.
Thus several points must be slightly skip, otherwise, it will be either too confusing (episode 6 is really fat), or many things will be omitted.
That said i believe they make it slightly light with Yakusamashi, and the lack of Rule Z isn't that a problem.
Rulz Z might be explained later on so...
as for the preview... hoho interesting things... especially a complete surprising thing... a very unexpecting "moe" character :heh: (nothing spoiler, and those who have read it will probably know what i'm talking about... newcomers will be either freaked out, or will find it godly XD)
also, the summary is finally done, at last...
As for some people lurk around, the ASS file is finally available for episode 6.
The subbed version shouldn't take too long.

Agreed. Minagoroshi-hen, as the first "true" answer chapter, is filled with information that takes a lot of time to digest. It would be impossible to portray them all in an animation (especially the monologue-heavy parts).
But as far as I can tell from watching this episode, I can only praise DEEN for a job well done. It's been a long time since I played Minagoroshi-hen, but I think they captured all the important beginning parts in this first episode. Rika's explanation of the rules in the beginning was quick, but it was still easy to understand. Hanyuu's presence was also done nicely (+ showing us what the "dark" part meant in dark Rika :heh: ).
The most important part in the beginning of Minagoroshi-hen was probably the scene at the toy shop
where Rika shared, for the first time, her thoughts about everyone's "predetermined fate" with Keiichi. Of course, Keiichi's action of asking for another game may seem insignificant, but it meant the whole world to Rika, because whether he was serious about it or not, he just denied a fate that Rika was stuck with for hundreds of years.
The fact that Keiichi gave the doll to Mion also meant that he has just avoided Watanagashi-hen completely. The message he has delivered to Rika is that fate is not something to be accepted, but something that can be changed if you have the will to do it.
Hanyuu wasn't nearly as annoying as she was in the game (in this beginning part anyway), probably because she didn't show up everytime Rika began to feel hope and tell her not to expect too much (because the more hope she has, the bigger the disappointment she will feel when everything fails again, which means less "willpower" to go on the next time around, which in part is signified by the shortening of Rika's revival period).
The scene at the Irie clinic also explained the whole syringe thing. Any other questions (such as Satoko's L3) will be explained later as well.
I was hoping for somebody to drop kick the lolicon, but I guess that's asking too much of Takano. :heh:
Next week looks like it will feature Rika's deal with Takano and Tomitake. The development is quick as usual, but it feels much more structured this time around.
If only the game's soundtrack can used... (only complaint I have left :heh: )

I can't really say much about the actual episode yet, but from the little bits of raw I saw ( I didn't wanna spoil myself TOO much) I wish DEEN would've reanimated the bits of animation from the flash back to tie in the Kai's new art style.
From what I remember they did actually reanimate a scene from Episode 14/15 in the first epiosde of Kai.

at last we see hanyuu making her appearence! let the "auauauauau's" roll in XD
the ep itself was pretty solid showing rika's situation not changing at all ~ yep she is still depressed and void of any hope (and unlike what i would have though hanyuu isnt cheering rika up with words of support...rather the opposite >.>) ~ but it is understandable how rika feels ~ over 100 years she has bee at this endless loop sheesh! poor girl needs a break...
but a glimmer of hope is now shining with rika being proven by K1 that fate isnt all predetermined...first time ive seen k1 being this GAR and it was wonderful! ^.^
and that doll given to mion ~ i smell love!

Episode 6 : Analysis, thoughts and random comments (http://animehistory.wordpress.com/2007/08/11/higurashi-no-naku-koro-ni-kai-episode-6-analysis-thoughts-and-random-comments/)
things begin to have a very clear picture, huhuhu.
anime is inheritedly different from other media such as game and novel, so I don't see a big deal with anime not covering the original 100%. Anyway this episode is the one that begins to roll out all the answers why the entire story is segemented into different Chapters. I would have wished the director put some hint into Onikakushi-hen so people (like me) wouldn't be confused to see everybody alive and having fun again. Anime is different than other media and not until the very end of first season we learned that Rika is virtually someone from a higher dimension going through this infinity loop.
I would give this episode a higher rating than the last for every second of it. And even though I'm completely spoiled, to take the point of view as a normal audience, this episode is just better than awesome.
anime is inheritedly different from other media such as game and novel, so I don't see a big deal with anime not covering the original 100%.
I don't expect the anime to cover even 50% of the details the games had. What I do expect is for them to not leave out, or worse, twist important events from the game (which they certainly did in the first season). When they screwed with the doll event in Watanagashi-hen, I fumed. When they left out Shion's monologues in Meakashi-hen, I complained. When they completely skipped Rena's past in Tsumihoroboshi-hen, I plain gave up.
Thankfully, it seems they noticed this as well, because Minagoroshi-hen is looking like it's off to a great start. Perhaps because they have more episodes to work with now, things don't feel nearly as rushed this time around (now that I think about it, this episode only covered a tiny tiny bit of Minagoroshi-hen's beginning).
Then again, seeing as how the game scenarios got bigger and bigger as it neared the end, (Minagoroshi-hen's text volume was over 1.2 times that of Tsumihoroboshi-hen, and Matsuribayashi-hen was the longest scenario out of all 8 scenarios) we will probably need all those episodes (especially if they plan to do even some of the kakera puzzle for Matsuribayashi-hen) (probably not :heh: ).
Oh yeah, now that we're finally in Minagoroshi-hen, I recommend those of you who haven't read the Minagoroshi-hen TIPs that we translated (almost over a year ago!) to visit the TIPs thread and give them a look. ^^ The TIPs that covers this week's episode should be "Sitting in a Happy Circle with Oyashiro-sama (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?p=690546#post690546)" and "I and I (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?p=690889#post690889)"

Be really careful not to ready anymore or you'll spoil yourself. I just wish that DEEN had announced the second season a long time ago. I never would have spoiled myself in that case.
I guess tips are good to know but aren't really needed to understand the bigger story. I'm looking forward for them to animate the important events that lead to 1983 hinamizawa as in the pieces of Matsuribayashi-hen; I would call those to have the content that weigh half of the entire 2nd season.

Would have preferred a more kawaii Hanyuu, but oh well xD
Didn't enjoy the fact that they restructured the whole game thing...
It would have been more symbolic if Rika actually got to change her own fate herself instead of watching Keiichi do all the work for her.
A lot of the funny dialogue was cut-off on the episode, damned time constraints. 18? episodes for both Minagoroshi and Matsuribayashi, but having like 50+ episodes would be too much...
Oh well, funny preview:D
ooh, interesting. Keiichi changed game AND gave the dool to Mion. awww
Ahw, Hanyuu is so cute! *Wants to take her home.* I'm luckily not informed of what'll happen from now on, so I'm sure I'll enjoy this arc immensely, as I've heard it's one of Higurashi's best.
I loved the whole sequence where Rika predicted the outcome, and Keiichi changed his actions accordingly. Giving the doll to Mion was like a dream come true as well, she just seemed so happy. This episode filled me with a lot of warm and fuzzy feelings, what a perfect way to start the new arc.

Klashikari

You can tell she has a disease and Rika is aware of this.
Now, we don't have anything else to determine what it is, from this ep.
however, you should check back season 1, there might be information which can simply give more details "what is this".
the answer will be given soon enough anyway.

No, Level 3 isn't the name of the disease. he blatantly says it is a "stage of the disease".
L3 is also an indication that for now, the subject cannot be cured by any means. (that means L1 and L2 can be cured right now, but not beyond this point)
MrZombie
2007-08-11, 15:51

Perhaps the fansubber got it wrong, but it does not eliminate the possibility her disease was named in the episode.

You know, you really need to cut it out with the attitude. I didn't come here to get yelled at and treated badly. The fansubber had Dr. Irie saying she had a disease called L3. And I do believe that if that is not her disease, it was mentioned in that episode. Either way, you should not treat people that way.
Let's stay calm, people. ^^;
The fansubber had Dr. Irie saying she had a disease called L3. And I do believe that if that is not her disease, it was mentioned in that episode. Either way, you should not treat people that way.
It's an understandable error if one haven't played the game. Since Irie simply said "Satoko-chan is L3", those who hears it for the first time probably thought L3 = name of illness. However, game vets will know that "L3" simply refers to the stage of the illness, in this case, Satoko is at Level 3.
The name of the illness will be revealed eventually, as we dive deeper into the relationship between Irie and Rika. For now, just think of it as a forshadowing.
The illness name is not revealed yet. It's quite a fancy name so I would've noticed if it was mentioned. :heh:
EDIT: Ok, he really said "Satoko-chan is level 3". Either way, just give it a few more episodes, it'll become clear eventually. ^^;

in fact, Irie also said "this stage", so it is 100% sure it isn't the disease itself ^^
and well, considering the various confirmation of both spoiled and gamer parties, no worry about it.
that said, the name of the disease is really not a critical information :heh:
EDIT: "Satoko-chan LEVEL 3 desu". (there is maybe a particle after "chan", but i way cannot confirm this)
looks like the missing word is implied, since Rika already knows about it as well. (that can be translated as "Satoko-chan's ... is level 3"). that said, the "stage" mention after this is self explanatory.
oh well :heh:

In the fansub I saw, Dr. Irie's exact line was translated as: "Satoko has L3". The stuff about it not yet being curable was mentioned a little after that.
You know, you really need to cut it out with the attitude. I didn't come here to get yelled at and treated badly.
Err... you know. He just said a matter of fact thing, you are just being over-paranoid. Take what you read on the Internet with a grain of salt and with an open mind. Half of the time you think someone is insulting you it's just your imagination. Either that or in this universe you will be the one going nuts and killing everyone else :p
The fansubber had Dr. Irie saying she had a disease called L3.
It was a loose translation. The original was something like "ただ。。。何度も説明したとおり、沙都子ちゃんはレヴェル3です。" which can be roughly translated as "It's just that... as I've explained many times before, Satoko (is/is in) Level 3." Don't take every fansub you see as an oracle of truth. They can make mistakes as well.

Look, it's a possible spoiler. It's not called level three, it's the stage of the disease she's at alright? Now just wait and it'll eventually be explained.
You don't think that's rude?>_>;
And I already said that. I was just putting what the fansub said exactly, since some people seemed to be getting confused. If what I was asking to know was the result of a translation mistake and/or a spoiler, there were certainly nicer ways to go about telling me. There's no need for anyone to become so irritated and hostile.

No offence but you may be a little paranoid here. I didn't read anything there that was close to being rude. Your being a bit sensitive about the whole thing.
Anyways when I heard that for a moment I did think that L3 was the name of the disease. Pretty bad naming no doubt. But listening I did hear him say Level 3 and since that would be the worst name for a disease ever it seemed pretty obvious it was a stage of whatever Satoko has. No trying to get back to positive discussions on the episode.
Am curious what it is Satoko has. She doesn't seem to be suffering all that much though I'd want to know what's up. Plus it might be possible when Rika's friends are losing it in the other worlds this disease might be related? Perhaps she had been trying to inject them with the cure to the earlier levels of the disease.
Excellent episode I thought. We really learned something important in terms to some of these rules.

I know when a person is being rude, thank you very much, and I certainly don't appreciate people telling me I'm paranoid for that. The whole tone of that post was really nasty towards me, just for asking a simple question, and it was uncalled for.
I like this episode, still.
Having played the several fan-translated chapters of Minagoroshi-hen, for the first time I was able to put myself in the shoes of those who have been comparing the anime and the game ever since it begun. ;) I think DEEN did a very good job, although a bit more time and emphasis on Rika's rebellion against fate would have ben the icing on the cake, IMO. Somehow avoiding being spoiled about the story to this point, I am really curious about Satoko's illness. At first I thought that maybe some conjectures from Season 1 were true and everyone in the village does suffer from a stange illness which in some way leads to the Great Disaster. But if they control the symptoms even in irrecoverable cases like Satoko it seems somewhat pointless to kill everyone. Unless the sign of the illness spirallnig out of control is Rika's murder which would be some weird logic at work indeed.
All in all, it felt like a very good introduction to Minagoroshi-hen, I might be imagining it because I knew it beforehand but it really felt as if this tiem there will be major revelations just around the corner.
P.S. I probably should know that already but how many episodes will the second season have?

Seems like Hanyuu is more like a voice of moderation than anything. When Rika was getting depressed she seemed to be trying to get her spirits back up. But when talking about Keiichi possibly remembering she seemed to try and keep her from too much optimism.
At any rate it's troublesome if they are able to move in decreasing amounts back in time. It'll be a serious problem if they can't solve this problem soon. Since eventually if they don't have enough power when Rika dies that'll be the end of it.
Guess not experiencing so many failures in the past helps with Keiichi. He's got no problem fighting against fate and wanting to take it down. That guy really has some skills at times. Managing to avoid the crazy Shion route by giving that doll out to Mion. At least if Rika has some hope and is willing to fight there is a chance. Doesn't seem like things will resolve themselves by chance after all.
Takano looks cute in that nurse uniform. :/
Well, if you listen very carefully (he will say it only once), Dr. Irie says that Satoko has "Level 3".
Seems like Hanyuu is more like a voice of moderation than anything. When Rika was getting depressed she seemed to be trying to get her spirits back up. But when talking about Keiichi possibly remembering she seemed to try and keep her from too much optimism.
And that is what's troubling me. KOOL K, Ehm, Keiichi has shown, on multiple occasions, that he is able and willing to change fate "as Rika knows it". A time warping ethereal spirit vs Rika and K-kun?
Keiichi is very cool. Way to cheer up Rika. I really enjoyed the part of their conversation where he said he could tell she'd been bored. The part where Rika drank the hot sauce, or whatever it was, was also quite awesome.
I really can't understand Rika too well. It shouldn't be hard to change things, even if all you do is say, "I want to go home" or "Keiichi, can I pick my seat through the lottery before you?" and right away you change the way the game occurred. Well, some of the major things would certainly be more difficult, so I guess she's just become totally disillusioned with her ability such that she doesn't even see the occasions when she could make a little difference.
Somebody mentioned this already, but it doesn't help when Hanyuu talks fatalistically, even though she means well. Hanyuu clearly has a human personality and tries to be a good friend, but she could certainly use lessons from Keiichi in some respects (then again, Keiichi is way better at friendship than most people would be expected to be, isn't he... x.x).
So Rika was about to yell out "Keiichi" near the end there, but quieted when he gave the doll to Mion. Was she going to say "Keiichi, give it to Mion"? That's pretty direct, if I were here I'd try to say, "Mion, isn't that the doll you told me you thought was pretty the other day?" and when Mion denies it Keiichi won't believe her and will give her the doll. But it seems she didn't need to. Well, what matter is that she had the courage to try to change things there, even if the action itself would've been redundant.
Anyway, is it really the case that every time the doll is given to Rena, Meakashi-hen occurs? That's kind of troublesome. And I wonder how Rika knows that the doll is the trigger, in one of these past worlds did she really piece it together? Or maybe it's just experience, that she remembers that fine difference occurred in the ones where Shion went berserk. Yeah, that's probably it.

the problem isn't exactly the difficulty, but rather the meaningless aspect of various actions she did after more than hundred years with this insane circle.
Well, what matter is that she had the courage to try to change things there, even if the action itself would've been redundant.
this is the second (and last) choice you can do in higurashi: the result is the same but Rika can either watch keiichi after his speech, being confident of this, or attempt to stop keiichi.
In fact, the game has shown that Rika poked Keiichi back, and was about to give a discrete hint, with a very light voice, so only him could hear it (it is obvious because mion will probably refuse if rika tells him to do so). but even before she wants to say "the person that wants that doll the most is the person complaining the most", Keiichi says "i know", and give the doll to Mion right away.
This is still a giant change, because Rika knows that Keiichi is dense about Mion's feelings and a simple poke in the others world wouldn't change this. therefore, Keiichi truely changed the course of fate, which drastically boosted Rika up
in the anime, she would probably try to make an excuse, and then giving a discrete hint. but she couldn't say out of loud.
Yeah, that's probably it.The toy store event doesn't happen all the time.
But each time Keiichi gives the doll to Rena (which happens 100% of the time before minagoroshi), shion goes berserk.
She was then able to conclude that when the toy store event happens, it has 100% chance that it will turn into watanagashi/meakashi.
Having just read the last line of the TIP involving the letter from the grandfather, I'm all of a sudden very regretful I read that Q&A thread and the Putting the pieces together thread. x.x
At this point I think I'm pretty much spoiled to everything, then, except the how & why of the series' conclusion.
But considering there's 18 more episodes which will be all new events unfolding, and I have no idea what Sushi-Y meant by a deal in the next episode, I'm very hopeful that I will continue to be intrigued by the show. You know, I feel like Yukusamashi-hen should have been replaced with an arc which contained cleverly introduced information they left out of previous arcs, like how Shion & Mion were switched when the tattoo was put on. If they hadn't just used last arc to display how in despair Rika is, that would have made the "rules" discussion at the start of this episode a lot more incredible.Pieces are done so they give the hard and solid truth on a silver plate.
You could even get the "how" and "why" if you proceeded in your read, so well, good point for you at least...
And no, Yakusamashi is hardly a good chapter to put the solid information, otherwise Minagoroshi would have its impact extremely lessened. they have the time to develop the pieces anyway. they were able to stretch a lot of things with only Reunion and Yakusamashi, so don't worry about it too much. we will see.
Oh, and people are saying they left out some of the rules at the start of the episode? Maybe it's because they want to introduce them later. I can't believe they didn't have time, since they had time for Rika to reference all the previous tragedies which they could have cut if something else was important.they might introduce it later, but the introduction was extremely important, since it gives many insight aside of the rules and the like.
but it is maybe too "spoilerish" maybe, especially that people got big informations while it was not in the game, but from yakusamashi hen. (the clear vision of the janitors, that is)
I've heard that these upcoming arcs aren't as bloody as most of the previous ones, and all these recent episodes have just been a slow, depressing and Rika-centric, so although I love Rika and don't mind melancholy, I'm hoping that they called it the "massacre" chapter because Shion, and Rena team up and go on a killing spree the last episode, not because they're referring to the Disaster. You didn't get the true meaning of the title.
just wait for its end, you will understand why it is called massacre anyway.
EDIT : whaa, checking back the game, they sure go straightfoward.
too bad they skipped some cute discussion between Rika and Hanyuu (satoko raised in a cage? whaa? :heh:)
also, how Rika is forced to "stick with fate" (the 50.000 yens issue..) and losing more and more interest in the world as it is (nore more surprise, no more excitement, and so in extent, maybe no more feelings: struggling to stay furude rika)
at least, they draw her silly idea "50.000 yens of soy sauce!" :heh:
gah... if only they could pull that memorable "you DO want it Mion!", with everyone, hanyuu included, laughing ^^" (oh well, maybe it is as cute ne?)

I almost forgot, that's very true. I never paid much attention to her looks in the past, but god-damn, I saw her through new eyes today.
I've seen a CG of Takano wearing "an" uniform that may very well into the field of moe... The CG is from Higurashi's PS2 game of course -v-
Anyway the I found this episode's predestination thing got a bit over the top of sensible. Rika could completely predict the seating arrangement with 100% confidence. Nobody thinks this is a bit odd with the game they were going to play eventually, actually can vary? but not the seating? Drawing lots should be a much more random action than deciding on a game, imo.

I don't really get this attitude. Is the only reason so many people watch this series the violence? The characters are far deeper than most in anime and the plot is well thought out and contains tons of foreshadowing.
The violence brought on by the characters is the worst possible out come for any world. Is it then that surprising that as the closer we get to a happy ending the less and less violence we get?

Rika addresses that in the game. The drawing should be random but Mion found a way to rig it.

Another great episode of course and this one i was looking forward to very much since we Hanyuu makes her appearance and the rules of spelled out for us. So what i gathered from this episode is that certain things will happen and have happen every time around although certain triggers will be different. One of the incidents that does not change is the fact that Tomitake and Takano will be murdered on the night of the Watanagashi festival and the second incident is that Rika her self will be killed shortly thereafter these 2 events will happen in every world.
I finally also got my answer as too how long Rika has been reincarnated. She has been at it for over 100 years and Hanyuu is even older since the beginning of the founding of the village and it seems each time they get less time to find a way to avoid all the tragedies. I didnt expect that Hanyuu and Rika senses were linked and i believe for the first time we see the real Rika for long periods and shes pretty mean Hanyuu LOL. I also enjoyed how this episode was directed right at the audience, as if Rika her self is talking to us since she knows we are watching that was a nice touch that kind of drew me in more.
Heres my theory for fight destiny. Rika obviously has grown tired after going through this over 100 times. She has always looked for an answer but has never directly tried to influence things thinking that you could not escape destiny and or fate, I think she is trigger and her friends are the bullets Rika was never meant to change events just to acquire the knowledge to her friends do it. The only incident where a change occurred was K1 remembering things from the past which gave her some hope that things could change but it never happened again so she and Hanyuu abandoned that path. Without even realizing it Rika directly influenced a change in the new world by telling K1 certain information which she has never done before at least not in so much detail. They didnt play cards that has never happened before and the direct result of that was K1 giving Mion the doll instead of Rena which avoided her starting the killing cycle. Obviously neither Rika or Hanyuu never thought of influencing events this way since it surprised both of them. The theory that you can fight fate if you try just might be valid given Rika knowledge and her friends personalties which K1 demonstrated. I think if she at certain key points in history interacts with each member of the group she might be able to guide them in a different direction than what history and destiny have dictated. In other words Rika was going about everything all wrong its not one person that will be responsible for finding what i call the happy path it will be each member of her group. The key is to act and give hints at the right time theres is an event for each version of the killings with Rena, K1, Mion, Shion, Satoko. if she can avoid these triggers happening it might create alternate ending that Rika and Hanyuu have desperately been searching for.
Well thats my theory im sure i might have somethings wrong but i wanted to share with everyone and get some feedback from the more experience Higurashi fans. please feel free to add things.

I like that theory Sinestra. But it doesn't really work with me. Although Keiichi giving Mion the doll really fit in with that. I think that Hinimizawa is like a lock and Rika, Hanyuu, Keiichi, Mion/Shion, Satoko and Rika are like the keys. but the combination will create a new place that the lock opens up. Like you said, something triggers them and that is when they key opens the lock (determines their fate). But I'm just guessing. That's like your theory too though so maybe I'm just wording it differently.
This episode was easily one of my favorites. I like when Rika is relfecting and well...duh! Au au au~
I started off watching the anime and I feel Minagoroshi-hen is going to be one of the better arcs. I feel an awesome amount of potential here and next week can't come soon enough. :|!!

It wasn't just that, but also how quickly and effortlessly Keiichi sidestepped what would have become Watanagashi/Meakashi-hen.
With a few simple words and a quick, seemingly-meaningless action, he avoided going down one of the "Bad end" paths.
But even if Rika manages to have her friends not go insane, she still has to deal with the Evil Janitors (and with what KJ posted in the Ep 5 thread (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=1078372&postcount=96), I think they might be the KGB) murdering her.
How can she and her friends go against people with guns?

Well, most of the events in Watanagashi are a chain of events with one causing another. Now that that Keichii broke one of those chain of events, we might see a totally new ending.
I was really surprised when Keichii gave the doll to Mion. Maybe Keichii's first instinct was to give it to Rena (as always) but then remembering Rika's talk about fate he thought "If fate wants me to give the doll to Rena, then I'll give it to Mion instead!".
I completely agree with Sinestra's theory as well. All of the gang going crazy comes by triggered events. Somehow Keichii is key in this, maybe because he hasn't been in Hinamizawa as long as the others so he's not as affected by it's powers as the others.

That's right, while Rule X (madness in Rika's friends) can be varied and avoided to a certain extent (such as how Watanagashi-hen was avoided in this episode), Rule Y (Rika's murder) is a toughie, since it never fails to happen.
There must be a strong willpower behind whatever governs Rule Y, because it always occurs (unless Rule X got to Rika first). In other words, for Rika to be murdered in every single "reset" by the mystery crew, it must mean that somebody really wants Rika dead. And not just a regular death too - note that Rika is murdered the same way everytime.
Think back on the manner of Rika's death, the location where it occured, and the possible meanings that it might carry. Why would somebody want to kill Rika that way?
How can she and her friends go against people with guns?
I smirked when I read that. :p

How can she and her friends go against people with guns?
This is an anime. They'll all get secret sword and/or ninja training.
K1 is ninja enough as it is, with latent ability exceeding the OVER 9000 mark.
Satoko can lay trip-arrow traps that hit for massive damage, Rena can tank since she has Rika casting protective spells and healing her. Assuming Shion has abilities equivalent to Satsujinki, killing those petty humans should be simple. When Rika's not healing or buffing Rena, she can cast AoE spells that damage the enemy's weakpoint, hitting for massive damage. Mion's the primary long-range gunslinger with an ASPD of 255+ so she's pretty much set... However, in the absence of bullets, she can always summon SKEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITH and kill the lot of them.
I completely agree with Sinestra's theory as well. All of the gang going crazy comes by triggered events. Somehow Keichii is key in this, maybe because he hasn't been in Hinamizawa as long as the others so he's not as affected by it's powers as the others.
Quite apart from anything else, Keiichi's freakish persuasive powers make him a key player. Keiichi is just as as vulnerable to the syndrome as anyone else but if he relies on his strength, using his words, he has the power to change the decisions that lead to catastrophe. But he has to know what he's doing first.

Minagoroshi's impact would be lessened if Yakusamashi had solid information? The type of solid information I'm referring to is background information on the characters, little details about themselves which were omitted from the earlier chapters but which don't have much relevance to the main plot except to deepen the characters. Perhaps I just don't understand the meaning of Minagoroshi so I don't see how that would affect Minagoroshi, but it doesn't seem possible in my current way of thinking.
Humm, i was expecting "solid information" from the pieces. i stand corrected then ^^"
But actually, yakusamashi-hen gave a nice bunch of missed points :
-Satoko's "past" and how the villagers consider her
-The injections
-Rika tragic destiny, which is extremely lessened without her inner thoughts. her so "tired" attitude in Yakusamashi was a good plus to understand the extent of her hopelessness, thus her behaviour in Minagoroshi-hen was much more natural. (i don't think people would feel the same way if Minagoroshi just hit hard after Reunion...)
-Parallel between Yakusamashi-hen end, and the skipped part in tatarigoroshi for keiichi (since anime watchers don't know what happened to keiichi)
-Kameda-kun, and in such extent, Keiichi KOOL mode, which explain his "Magician of Words" title.
-Kumatani's missing case, and so in such extent, Ooishi's missing case from Tatarigoroshi
Of course they didn't fill every holes. what i can recall as "problem" is most likely :
-Keiichi's past (Tatarigoroshi and Tsumihoroboshi weren't detailed)
-Mion and Shion
-Shion monologue during meakashi
-Rena's past (extremely lacking, and even the "omochikaeri" part isn't explained -___-")
-Akasaka unsure fate
most likely, Tatarigoroshi and Tsumihoroboshi were the critical mistakes DEEN have made, but you cannot expect anything more with only 26 episodes.
Things might be smoother if they actually put the season 1 as questions only (Onikakushi -> himatsubushi), then Kai for the rest, thought it might be too short. (considering how fat the answers arcs are...)

I was wondering if any of you have heard this one before, I found it kind of strange that anyone would write this sort of thing, or is it relatively normal?:
It was just one of those nights. Rika was feeling more depressed than usual and had been drinking rather heavily, which was staring to worry Hanyuu. "WHY CHHAN'T TSHING EVER GO RIGHT!?" Rika would shout, not having to worry about Satoko waking up because she had slipped a bit of alcohol into her grape juice during their evening meal, which had caused her to fall asleep deeper than usual. She then threw the glass she held against the wall and just started drinking from the bottle. "Rika! It tastes so nasty! Why do you have to drink sooo much?" Rika only responded by taking an extra long chug of liquor. "You know what you problem ish Hanyuu? You just, don't, know, when, TO, SHUT, UPPPPP!!!!!!!" She then proceeded to open up jar after jar of kimchi, the stench and Rika's behavior started Hanyuu's eyes water. "NO RIKA DON'T DO IT! PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEEEEASE!!!!!" But it was too late, Rika had already started swallowing down whole jar fulls of kimchi at once. Hanyuu could feel the burning sensation go down her throat where it would sit and fester inside her stomach, which was already quite full of wine. "Rika! Please! You've already had so much to drink!" This only incited Rika to swallow down more, juices and all. By the time Rika had finished the last jar, she passed out from exhaustion, but Hanyuu was left alone, still awake from the painful feeling of the kimchi in her stomach, and the potent alcohol which had been there for quite some time now. She just sat there thinking about the better times she had with Rika. How they would play hide and seek, run around in the grass, and sing songs with each other. But all this thinking took her mind off how her body was feeling, the kimchi and the wine had finally took it's toll. It started out as a hiccup, which didn't seem like much at the time, but as the night grew on things would soon start to change. Hanyuu woke with a startle as she heard a long moan, "R-r-rika! Wake up, I think I heard something!". It was then that she noticed that it was Rika who was doing the moaning, she immediately remembered all that horrid kimchi Rika had eaten, along with the two bottles of wine. But then it hit her, the feeling that came from the bowels that told you "IT'S GO TIME!". Hanyuu suddenly had a rush of desperation come over her as she realized what was about to happen "RIKA! RIKA! RIKA! WAKE UP! WAKE UP NOW!" All this commotion even caused Satoko to become partially awake, but after muttering something about her Nii-nii, she was soon fast asleep again. Hanyuu tried all she could to revive the comatose Rika, but it was to no avail. Then there was suddenly a long "Gggggggggrrrrraaaaaawwwwwwaaaalllblbblblle" that came from Rika. It was then that Hanyuu finally realized, she had failed. She could feel it starting to to go through her bladder, like a slow creeping snake. All she could do was just sit there and hold tight, thinking about what was going to happen. She could feel the pressure building up inside her, and she knew that with the amount of liquids that Rika had that night, it wasn't going to be pretty. The pressure just continued building and building, the relentless feeling that she just couldn't stop was rushing all over her. It had started out as a small trickle, Hanyuu was doing all she could to stop it, but it had grown too much. "Sorry, Rika...." She just let herself go, and a torrent of golden liquid rushed out which caused a small pool of piss to form around her. "Au au au au au au au auuuuuuuu!" she cried, thinking of how angry Rika would be when she woke up, and from all of the shame that she had of the act she just committed. When it was finally daylight, Rika started to stir, forgetting all that had happened then night before. She then noticed the horrified Satoko who was just standing there, completely silent. When she saw the mess of glass, wine, kimchi juices and piss that covered the floor, she let out a shriek that woke up all the rest of Hinamizawa.

It was just one of those nights....
.... the rest of Hinamizawa.
Welcome to 4chan :heh:
Wow.... that was good, I can't wait too buy the dvds for season 1 and after season 2 finishes. Heheh I wonder how they are going to portray this arc (From what we have seen, they are going to do an excellent job portraying one of the most important arcs). On the side note I hope they do the extra arcs after they finish the final (important arc; Matsuribayshi-hen). Then maybe release an OVA of the extra arcs Saikoroshi-hen, and Batsukoishi-hen for a light but silly arc.

i really loved that ep. cant wait for the rest of minagoroshi.
i am happy to see hanyuu animated, she is cute
and this arc looks like it is going to get pretty interesting:)
Rika didn't ever try to just stand back and let the world go. She didn't try to directly thwart fate because after hundreds of YEARS(cant imagine how many times she had to go around to manage that if her jumps are usually a month or so), nothing she's done has stopped the tragedies. Even when they "avert" a "disaster", like with the doll, it doesn't stop it from crashing back down again. Rika says it herself, even after K1 stopped Rena they all died, and ultimately there must be someone behind everything. Beyond the mad, frenzied killings, there's some cold mind focused on its goal, unclouded by doubt, fear or conscience. Rika's despair comes from the fact that she knows someone's out there, but that person's careful planning combined with the various incidents has prevented her from discovering them. She literally has to put all her effort to keep everyone else from killing her so she can find out who really wants her dead.
That said, I agree that K1 is the master key. Because he's an outsider and not a set part of the routine, his actions are far more likely to change the patterns, even more so since he's become so important to so many unstable women.
One thing I'm wondering. This is Minagoroshi Hen, the second to the last chapter in Higurashi, right? How many TV-unique arcs are there going to be, and how are they going to make two chapters and a couple originals stretch through the remaining 18 eps?
I really enjoyed this episode. K1 saves the day! I was so happy when he gave the doll to Mion ^_^
Keiichi is growing on me as well, I'm starting to think he might just be able to turn this whole thing around. And yes, Mion getting the doll was just unbelievably cute.
Ahh, someone who understands the potential of Keiichi's "Magician of Words" power. This places you in the winning team. :heh:
It took me a while to realise that that Rena's failure to reach Keiichi and Keiichi's success in reaching Rena was more a tribute to Keiichi's insidious mind bending powers than Rena's basic niceness.

First time I saw Hanyuu, my impression of her was a crying Mikuru lol
I really liked this episode too, even though I haven't played the games it still intrigues me as what will happen next.
I was struck by surprise when Rika started pouring that jar of spicy stuff down her throat, the comedy came out of nowhere. I liked it, though.
That Keiichi cosplayer from your signature looks awesome, by the way.

When i saw this at first, the scene where he changed the game and the doll thing. I couldn't help but think of Nightengale. (The nightengale in this forum if u would look at his sig, it's similar to what happened here)
But i kinda expected the doll giving to mion, since Keiichi is basically doing the opposite of what he would usually do ^^
Yeah, Keiichi has a way with words, partly because he often speaks straight from the heart, whether that heart is greedy, angry, homicidal or just nice, and partly because he is the most committed to backing up his words with action. His words have so much power, I think, with the girls at least because they've all come to like him so much. This's the natural psychological result of any remotely harem-like setting.
One thing I'm surprised i didn't think of before: these events always happen in June, early summer, at about the same time. This may further suggest the existence of some living parasite. Many organisms have a reproductive cycle that culminates in a summer "bloom" or population surge. The new organisms are more fragile, and strains can develop with more competition for food. If this is a parasite that effects the brain, probably near the adrenal gland, and the psychotic break is the result of effects that the parasite actively discourages, then strains and shifts in the infection resulting from such a bloom may be the reason that things get most dangerous at the same time. So long as Hinamizawa was at peace issues rarely developed, but once various events led to conflict, the parasites were too unstable in early summer to withstand agitation and stress, and began to allow severe reactions to occur.
The Rules of the Maze
We can change neither our identities nor the very nature of our existence.
Since the moment we are conceived into this world it's already been settled that each one of us will eventually die regardless how we die.
Why do we live for if death is what awaits all at the very end? What is the purpose to exist?
The very moment you're borned into this world that is when you begin to struggle for life.
No matter what you do it is impossible to avert fate.
Who or what has authority over this destination called "destiny"? Is it God? or is it a "will" engraved deep into the core of our egos that no matter how much we look up to the sky we cannot fly on our own?
This fate is the barrier that comes crashing down upon us to remind us all to know our respective place.
But whether you look at it this preestablished outcome tortures you inside.
Aren't we deserving of something more, something better beyond?
Don't think about it.
If you fight, only hardships and misery will await ahead. So what good is it to dream and desire something else if sooner or later fate will punish you for your transgressions?
Even if each one of us would have six dices on our hands and roll them all over, what are the chances for one, just one of us to get six 6's facing upward on all of his or her dices?
Why are you struggling? What drives you to attempt at escaping from that fate that bounds you to misery?
Aren't you afraid or haven't you think of the possibility that you might fail and die in the attempt?
But even if you fail yet you keep on trying.
You say that you choose to fight your fate because there is power on you. A power that exists on each of us since the beginning.
And that power is your choices.
What determines a person is neither the weight and sins of his or her actions nor the account of his or her life, but his or her choices.
That is to choose which course of action to take to make the next day different from the previous one.
But is free choice either an illusion to give a blind hope to oneself not realizing that by following that mirage you are guided to your own death? or is it the outcome of a passionate desire that drives one to endure all that pain while breaking open the path to reach that destined happiness that would be borned because you desired it by yourself?
Because I choose by myself now I am standing here. It is now so obvious
No matter how small one's peeble is it. If he or she throws it into the pond, the splash will cause ripples on the water and those ripples will become bigger at the long term.
My voice is my peeble, and it doesn't matter how small is it. Even if nobody would listen to me in this world, the ripples caused by the noise will travel to the next world carrying my voice within them, and I'm sure that no matter what dangers and uncertainties await in the next world I now believe that someone will eventually hear my voice.

Holy christ. The moment Hanyu appeared, I expected her to pull out a blocky handheld device, and say something along the line of: "Well, according to the data, we're back in the year 1983, early June,.. and you're still trapped in the body of a young priestess. And according to Ziggy, within just a few weeks, there's an 50% chance that you will be killed in this arc." :p
Watched the episode. I think its pretty awesome. Though to tell the truth I'm not an expert of Higurashi and I didnt play the game. Still i like Rika, she is really cynical.
also i wanted to comment on the prize money, off topic
for those who watched the subtitled version. the us$ equivalent of prize money is given as around $420 which is calculated using the current exchange rate. However in 1983 the exchange rate for the yen was twice as low. Ever since floating rates were set the yen has been getting stronger every year. I find it's related to Japan's growing economy and the subsequent appreciation of its currency
