I expect a Zetsubou Sensei chalkboard parody in this episode! Well, that's what I'm guessing it was in the preview for this episode.

The episodes air on Sunday in Japan.... then a few days to a week or two before the subs appear (depending on which group's subs you prefer).

I like the previous episode's ending, so I hope he would sing 'seriously' this time as well :)

Maybe have Kagami's VA this time around just to mess with people's mind :p ?

When does this episode air or has it already? The show airs at midnight Sunday nights in Japan, which is 11am Sundays on the US east coast.

Actually, airtime is on different days and at different times in various parts of Japan, but midnight Sunday is the first weekly broadcast (Chiba TV) and the one that seems to show up first in cyberspace.

The "summer anime calendar" in my sig gives broadcast dates and times for pretty well all current shows. Or you can check http://www.mahou.org/Showtime/

This episode ED again shows us Akira and Tsukasa's seiyuu, but I can't see their faces clearly. Minoru is there too with his own stupid song :D. Even the Japanese subtitle says "Please enjoy the beautiful scenery, two beautiful girls, the soap bubbles, and please turn off the volume if you need to" :D.

Lol there was a song? I wasn't really paying attention.

The art "style" is a bit different in this episode.

The bowling score made me laugh. Haruhi is winning, Mikuru's obviously losing, Kyon and Koizumi in between. But what made me smile was Nagato's score as it resembles how she would bowl in real life; a gutter ball on the first throw and then gradually tweaking herself into perfect strikes and splits wwwwww.

So like remember back when I said that Yutaka was going to be a 50 foot tall loli rampaging across the scene:

http://randomc.animeblogger.net/image/Lucky%20Star/Lucky%20Star%20-%2019%20-%20Large%2026.jpg

That's 6 for 6 or something along those lines. Somehow I have been writing jokes for this series since around episode 5.

Another great ep, for me. The *bleep* Gun-am %whistle% section between Konata and Kona-dad. Konata saying that Kagami talking to a fish gives a lonely image. Yui-neesan turning to Konata with a candy bar filling her mouth, with a great "mmmhh?" from Yui's seiyuu Nishihara Saori (http://hashihime.atspace.com/etc/luckystar/charseiyuus.html).

Yu-chan thinking seniors have no homework because Kona-chan doesn't do any, and Kagamin's reaction. The nice animation of Kagamin twirling her hair at 11:06. And I loved the drawing in the overhead view of Kagamin and Tsukasa watching TV at 11:41, with Kagamin's legs out to the side.

Kuroi-sensei was good throughout. I'm coming to love her accent, fake or not (she comes from Hyogo, so it's probably real). Her disappointment in not being the one asked for help was nice, as was her fruitless attempt to get some sleep by not playing on line.

The freshmen continue to be wonderful. Hiyori's thinking "it's hard to answer" when Yu-chan asked her what kind of manga she drew. Hiyori's imagination of Yu-chan and Minami together, both the starry romance and then giant Yu-chan. I really felt Shimizu Kaori did a wonderful, very professional job with Hiyori, with various different expressions. Like kj1980, I loved the bowling score, for the reasons he mentions.

And both Fukuhara Kaori (Tsukasa) and Hasegawa Shizuka (Yu-chan) have such moe voices.

I enjoyed the ED, after I got over my disappointment that it wasn't Aya.

Noticed in the end credits that one person was credited as writer, director, storyboarder, and animation supervisor of this episode. Quite unusual. Sometimes those jobs are done by four different people, often by three, sometimes by two. I don't remember having seen one person do them all before, though I expect it happens. The staff member in this case was Aratani Tomoe (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=13295), who was chief animation director of AIR, as well as doing a lot on AIR, Munto, Haruhi, and this show. I wonder if she will show up as a series director sometime, now that she is getting experience with scriptwriting as well as the more visual aspects of animation. Here's her page in No Anime, No Life (http://yurichan.nerv.org/cgi-bin/xsearch.cgi?m=s&q=%E8%8D%92%E8%B0%B7%E6%9C%8B%E6%81%B5&x=s).

However, I also see that Yamakan (original director Yamamoto Yutaka) is now shown as co-writer (http://pc.webnt.jp/anime/detail0097100807.html) of ep23, along with chief writer Machida Douko. I think AVPlaya is right and he is back in the KyoAni fold. Maybe everything up to now has been part of the possible subterfuge mooted by kj1980 around ep4, covering up for Yamakan's own wish to get out from under the responsibility.

Only five more eps to go! Time flies when you're having fun. To think that I worried there would not be enough material to retain interest for 24 episodes.
The Song Will Be Under The Sea In An Octopus' Garden With Aya HiranoNo it wasn't. Don't get my hopes up, lol.

No it wasn't. Don't get my hopes up, lol.

Oh shoot, that was just supposed to be a joke based off of the Beatles song and my belief that they will get Aya Hirano in there. Maybe the last episode then as I still think they will get her in there. I expect some sort of quirky sendoff for the series, possibly involving an ensemble of some kind of either the Haruhi, Air, Kanon etc. cast appearing in the final episode or the live action actors or something. I'll know it when I see it though, but I can picture what the finale is going to be like and expect a massive boost in animation for most of the final episode.

No doubt, the rest of the main cast will appear somehow in one or more of these last five EDs, as you say.

Fukuhara Kaori (Tsukasa) and Katou Emiri (Kagami) were guests at a public recording session of the Lucky Channel radio show on Sunday, and Kaorin wrote a piece, with pics, in her blog. I've translated the whole piece (http://hashihime.blogspot.com/2007/08/from-tsukasas-blog-lucky-channel-live.html) in my own blog.

Woah, that's a really hawt pic of Kanata right there! Can I say M**F? :D Hehe.

Anyway, great ep today. I loved how Hiyorin is such a fujoshi, but at the same time rejecting that. It makes for great comedy. But where's my favorite gaijin?? Patty and Hiyorin have really great chemistry as fujoshi's, they rival the manzai of Konata and Kagami. (not sure if I worded that right...:heh:)

Is it just me or does Yuu-chan going 50 foot tall remind you of EVA? I can't remember exactly, but I seem to remember Ayanami turning white as hell and starts destroying the Earth or something like that.

Lol at waitress Kagami! For those who haven't noticed yet, the waitress uniform Kagami is wearing is the same one that Tessa of FMP:F was wearing when she was in Japan. I don't have the exact shot as I can't find my copy of Fumoffu anywhere, but I'm sure as hell that it happens before they go to the hot springs.

I found Shiraishi's ED pretty lame this time, as far as I know he was screaming "suppon" or naked in English in the whole song. I demand moar of seriousness.

Anyway, great ep great ep. Now if the subs can come out much sooner, it'll be a greater ep.

Finally caught up; was backlogged a few episodes.

I think I can elect one VERY memorable scene of this episode; on par of Kagami's fall from grace, Tamura-san, http://img489.imageshack.us/img489/6712/yutakayaoisa0.th.png (http://img489.imageshack.us/my.php?image=yutakayaoisa0.png)
what's YAOI?
Hiyori is also a very interesting character, and I am enjoying every moment of her appearance. As the others have said, the freshmen are really standing out, but the old ones are also given much love (Kuroi, Miwiki). L*S has been quite stellar recently.

Also, I loved how they use audio in this series. The variety of sounds that is played when Konata and Izumi-chichi's lines are bleeped out was very effective.

The ending, the scrolling lines at the bottom gave me niconico comment vibes^^;;;;; Was alarmed for a moment:heh:

First some references:

Yui-nee is seen reading Fate/Zero, the prequel novel for Fate/stay night

Hiyorin is seen munching on a gigantic Shana-sized melon-bread

Hiyorin falling down animation sequence seems to be referring to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

I'm sure everyone saw the Edward Elric (and Roy Mustang?) cosplayers

The SOS Brigade going bowling. Heh, I can so imagine them doing that. It makes for a great chapter, in which the bowling rounds never ends until Haruhi wins them all.

Anyway:

- Tsukasa-chan not realizing she just said something obscene by accident +1

- Soujirou watches everything Gundam, simply because it's Gundam. I reckon he'll still watch Gundam 00 even if it has more yaoi-fodder than Gundam Wing. +1

- Nanako-sensei sleeping through the whole weekend. Man, I wish I could do that and just waste my weekend away. :D +1

- Poor Kona-chan and Yui-nee. After hearing Minami tell her that she would ask Miyuki for any problems with her homework, Yu-chan simply assumes Kona-chan and Yui-nee would be able to do the same. (While poor Soujirou got ignored completely, lol ) +1

- Poor Nanako-sensei. She's no longer being treated as a teacher but as an expert fellow MMORPGamer. lol +1

- Kona-chan doesn't realize she just made a silly pun out of typhoons. (It's hard to explain in English. ) However, Tsukasa-chan caps it off by revealing she didn't get the joke either. +1

- Don't you just hate it when the doorbell rings whenever you're taking a crap, shower or brushing your teeth? +1

- Waitress Kagamin~~!!!   +5

- Hiyorin in all sorts of emotions when drawing her yaoi doujins +1

- Hiyorin at a lost to explain to Yu-chan what kind of manga she draws. (Because it's full of yaoi. ) :heh: +2

- Minami x Yu-chan FTW, in Hiyorin's imagination anyway. BTW, a grown up Yu-chan sure is hot as well. But poor Minami would be dwarfed by her as a result. +1

- Yu-chan asking Hiyorin: What's yaoi? +5

I can't understand that joke about the dog... "Chin Chin?"

:naughty: If you're a girl.

Favorite parts of Lucky Star 19 Raw.

Tsukasa: Why do dog owners say "chin-chin" to call their dogs?

Miyuki: * Tries in vain to explain *

Tsukasa, Kagami, Konata and Miyuki: *Everybody realizes how ecchi that sounded.*

Konata raises her hand and says Who thinks that's dirty?

FYI Chinpo is a *cough* delicate manly part.

More from the first years.

Yutaka: Yaoi nani?

Hiyori: :ph43r:

Poor girl thinks herself as rotten and fears to corrupt her friends.

Hm. Not sure why, but I didn't really like this episode. Maybe the word plays at the beginning kept me from getting into it?

Also, what happened to Patty Martin? She should at least have been there even if she didn't have any line. Poor girl's getting even more ignored than Miyuki was.

I did like the "it's ok to turn off the sound", though.

Well, mark me down as loving every second of this episode. One moment I particularly liked was at the beginning, when Konata was talking about how her dog in the game was so cute she couldn't help talking to it, and her three friends went "aaah" in unison. The sound and the way they all moved together was great.

But I too want to see more Patty -- or at least hear more of her VA, Sasaki Nozomi.

Hrmm… just thinking. Despite what I've heard earlier from others, it seems that Konata didn't specify her dog being in a net-game.

So, I guess the possibility of the game Konata is talking about being Nintendogs isn't too bad.

Not as great as last week, but a solid 9 for me here.

Best part by far was the last line, "What's yaoi?" She looks so innocent like that and Hiyori just doesn't know what to say.

Other highlights include waitress Kagami (I'll disagree with Kona-chan there, she was so moe to me <3), and the difference between a reliable senpai and a non-reliable senpai. Asking Kona-chan for help with your homework and comparing that to asking Yuki-chan was pretty comedic.

I had to read the chin-chin joke here on the forums, I had no idea what that was. I also didn't get the whole Gundam conversation, I haven't watched much Gundam. I did find the FMA cosplayers to be pretty funny however.

Hiyorin owns the episode in the 2nd half. She's obviously as much an otaku or even moreso than Kona, but she clearly has an image she wants to keep up and is not as open or shameless in revelaing her interests.

Hiyori fest Hiyori fest Hiyori fest! WOO!

I can't believe that the second half of the episode was entirely devoted to Hiyori. I loved every moment of it, both because I for some reason really love the character as well as the fact that I could completely relate to every joke (I knew that she was drawing as soon as I saw her making faces!). The whole experience, though, was marred by the worry that they'll ignore her for a few episodes after exhausting her spotlight moments. I can only hope that's not the case.

If only she could drop the perverse comics, she'd rise from Backup Number Two and be a rival for the position currently held by Backup Number One (http://img507.imageshack.us/my.php?image=miyakawapp0.jpg). Primary is, of course, Miyuki. DON'T CRITICIZE MY DREAMS.

The rest of the episode continued the recent trend of being even more heart-warmingly wonderful than the series started. Even if it's hopping around like a hamster on a caffeine rush, I can't take the smile off my face as I watch. This is good stuff.

Also: Kudos to the series for being willing to poke fun at its own habits in the Gundam conversation. :)

The Gundam scene was just over the top on censoring, bluring the characters and bleeping out the names weren't enough, no lets black out their eyes also, lol.

Poor Sōjirō and Kuroi Sensei, it is a bit disappointing being a parent or a teacher but not having someone depend on you when they help.

Hiyori took up 2/5 of the episode, darn you Lucky Channel invading my LS time yet again.

Personally, I would've considered more amusing if Yu-chan asks what yuri is.

Art quality is a bit different.
While some scenes were in higher quality, certain details were consistently lower *cough* hands.

This episode was missing something, it was enjoyable but not as much as previous episodes.

I like how they started referencing other animes than Haruhi Suzumiya. Who else noticed the Kiddy Grade poster?

I like how they started referencing other animes than Haruhi Suzumiya.

But they did that for a while, like the Yugioh parody in a previous episode.
I am starting to feel like Skane when he ranted about how some of the naysayers (I am not including you in this bunch) are conveniently oblivious of every other references that are not SuzuHaru to add more weight to their criticisms.

But yeah, on a side note, I too want to see more of Yutaka, Minami, Hiyori and Patty.

I guess I'm of the camp that didn't find this episode as good as the previous ones. I can't quite put my finger on it, though...

And no, it's not the lack of Haruhi references. Even I enjoyed the previous episode very much despite having none... >_>

You've got to love that scene, not so much a reference as a direct copy, er, I mean a homage. yes, that's it, a homage.

Add me to the list of people that didn't find this episode to be as good as previous ones.

I think my reason for it has to do with the fear that I had when it came to watching episode 18: even with Yutaka's cuteness, the second half of the episode would be weak if it lacks the greatness that is Konata (similar to how I felt episodes 3 and 11 of Azumanga Daioh were clunkers due to the lack of Chiyo-chan and, to a lesser extent, Osaka).

Maybe it's just me, but the scenes in this episode felt really disconnected. They used to at least run a common theme in them for 10-15 minutes at a time.

Don't get me wrong: the gags were funny.

about the "chin chin" gag... I'll tell you a funny trivia ^^

If by any chance you hear italian people saying that in Japan, they probably don't mean to be obscene... because in italian language, "chin chin" means cheers, kanpai! :heh:

Hmmm, I certainly got a pile of the "lucky*star I was looking for" (from the manga). Problem is they threw so much Hiyori at us that it kind of diminished her funny to me. So I've dinged it a bit for "organization of material" since it looked like they just culled all the Hiyori strips out and lined them up. Where's our huggable snaggletooth and our American transfer anime-fan?

It almost slipped under the radar that we got a lot of nice "Nanako moments" out of this episode. She *soooo* needs to find a guy :) .... it is insane because she's so enjoyable: slim, attractive woman that plays net games, likes to drink, has a great laugh and wry sense of humor. Yeesh (takes some time out to slap the crap out of the male japanese citizenry).

A bit of hilarity with Kona traipsing around in her sports undies and her explanation (Japan has been instituting official summer 'dress down' to combat over-usage of air conditioning and save energy).

I actually like the anime-only Gundam sequence, mostly because it was an obvious skewer of the tactics used to obfuscate references. The dialog ran like a bit of Monty Python absurdity with nice use of noises.

Minami and Yutaka have some lovely moments --- Minami's VA is showing quite a bit of quality in evoking emotion with such spare dialog (I may have to nudge Asakawa Yuu over a bit if Chihara Minori keeps improving at the zen minimalist style).

Using my criteria, I *should* give this a "10" for being so much Lucky*Star but I threw a "9" because I thought the choice and organization of material was less than brilliant.

Finished watching, great episode overall! Here's a few things:

- Have to say I think I got brain damage from that 60 seconds of Gundam talking;

- Tsukasa's voice is too cute it should be illegal;

- Both Kona and Kagamin are shining w/ moeness, the best part of all LS is, afterall, interaction between these two;

- Soujirou is helpless, he's walking that fine line, I'd prefer more Otakuness and less Pedo-ness but so far he manages to be more funny than creepy;

- Even Nanako sensei got some worthy screen time, not Yukari sensei of AzuDai greatness yet, but she's getting better!

- I can see the 2nd half having a little too much Hiyori for some, but as someone who used to occasionally do fanarts (not doujin/yaoi ofc :P)myself, I can TOTALLY relate to all her antics. She's just emmensely enjoyable to me. (Though I won't say the first years' can have their own show, LS need Kona and Kagamin else it just won't be)

- I LOL'd hard at this episode. I just find it funny that it's basically an Otaku show making fun of Otakus (not in really harsh way ofc) and only Otakus can get the jokes.

- It's amazing how LC and ED can drop from the part I look forward to, to the part I skip now. Akira is losing her charm and Shiraishi can die in a fire for all I care.

I first heard about Cool Biz from a friend who recently returned from working in Japan, and even though I could see the purpose behind the program, I couldn't wrap my head around it. I think that's why I literally burst out laughing when I heard Soujirou mention it by name; there's no way that would ever fly in these parts.

Completely veering OT here, but... yeah, it was 102°F here the other day, with a heat index topping 110. Lovely, I know, but in truth just slightly above par for the course in mid-August. I guess it's at least a change of pace from thunderstorms amidst the low-90s temperatures that plagued us last month--and that's not even getting into the swarms of legendary Texas mosquitoes resulting from the stagnant water.

Around here, you don't get used to the heat as much as you get used to the presence of A/C counteracting it. :) I've lived in Houston for pretty much all my life, but as far as getting used to a climate, well... the four years that I spent in the Bay Area for college have superseded my twenty in Texas in that regard, and have spoiled me forever.

---

I've been thinking: the previous episode showed Hiyorin sketching with a pencil in her left hand, and this episode has a shot of Yutaka and Minami holding their chopsticks in their left hands (I honestly have no idea whether or not chopstick use is a reliable indicator of which of a person's hands is dominant, but Minami, at least, also throws with her left). Nanako writes with her left hand, and we've seen the third-years all do the same, with Konata being ambidextrous.

Being left-handed, I think it all amounts to a nice little touch (edit: and in response to the below, I'm almost certain that Yoshimizu-sensei is a lefty). It does make me wonder, though, if there's anyone amongst the LS cast who's strictly right-handed.

Any of you do marching band? IN Texas? I live in the DFW area btw.

OMFG, prospective marchers, don't do it. I've been doing it for 2 years now, 3 counting this year, and sheesh, Texas heat completely ****ing sucks. Around 8-9AM local time, we were only doing warm-ups, ya know jumping jacks, push-ups, all that, and I was sweating like hell already.

Past monday officially sucked as well, I barely ate breakfast, my water wasn't cold, and around 10AM I was almost this close to succumbing to heat exhaustion. I was barely holding on, and somehow I survived for another hour and 30 minutes.

Anyway, back to topic.

A bit off-topic but anyway...
One's chopstick use is definetely a major indicator of their dominant hand.
And, left-handed use of chopsticks were once considered as impolite and vulgar behavior in Japan, and in fact my father had to be ambidextrous due to such circumstances. Maybe Soujirou's as well?

I FINALLY got to watch 19... Didn't enjoy it as much as the last one, but it's pretty good nonetheless.

A lot of puns in this one... I'm going to have a lot of fun explaining those. While I enjoyed Tsukasa and Yutaka asking "tough" questions, it seemed to be overplayed a bit. I also liked some detail into Nanako's life... just wish they finally ask her why is a teacher using a fake accent all the time.

Hiyori is more interesting of an otaku than Kona to me... while Kona is one of those blatantly nerdy otaku with zero shame, Hiyori, like great majority of fujoshi out there, are still kinda in-the-closet. Her blushing is quite enjoyeable. I do miss Patty-chan... her otaku-ness is also fun to watch. Come to think of it, both of them are more likely to exist than Kona... a loli-looking akiba-kei girl otaku? I wonder if anyone like that really exist in real life?

Love the Akira/Kanata flash... that was unexpected and sweet. Why Akira though? Now we got her all giddy for appearing in the main story. How about a proper Kanata flashback?

The most interesting thing to me in 19 is the quick scene which Kagami caught Tsukasa waiting for someone to text back. WHO? WHO COULD SHE BE TEXTING? Not her sister because she's right there... not Kona because she never carry her phone and never replies... and why would she be embarassed about texting Miyuki? So who does that leave? Our beloved Shiraishi-sama perhaps?

LC is alright... the joke was that Akira was asking Shiraishi to kill himself, but it gets a little long. It's kinda funny when you know what they're talking about. Shiraishi said also he went to Jogashima Island as an outdoorsman... that's where the real Shiraishi filmed all those EDs.

ED - I'm beginning to think ONLY Shiraish, Kaorin, and Hiromi-chan went to Jogashima for this trip. Where are the other seiyuus? If they are there, won't they want to be in the ED fun? Yet we see the three of them all the time; Perhaps this is a KyoAni "company trip" in the guise of ED location shooting, so only Shiraishi and Hiromi needed to go, and Shiraishi invited Kaorin along because he wants to create romantic shonen memory with her. So she's added to the trip and the rest if anime history. If there are any more live action thing in this show they could really just make a dorama out of it. Also the ED song is not in Enka format this time but it's more of a traditional folk song. I must say this Shiraishi is rather talented, even thought he can't really sing.

Overall a 9 for me... now on to the Ref list...

The place Akira told him to go, the foothills of Mount Fuji, is a famous for being a popular spot for people to hang themselves. It's also reportedly the most haunted place in Japan, that's why Shiraishi is scared of going alone. Basically Akira's telling him to go there and just die. When she said her last line of LC "You have already crossed the line of death", that's what she was talking about.

It was an OK episode...Not quite as enjoyable as 18 was. The first half had more then a few parts that felt a little ho-hum while the second half was more enjoyable overall it felt like it was playing the same joke just with a slight variation over and over heh.

As for L*C...ehhh...ummm...Yay for the info about having a guest next episode ,so as to not make me feel I just wasted my time by not skipping ahead to the previews for the next week...I guess? :p Honestly I really do get the joke by now...Akira is bi-polar and hates Shiraishi...How many times do they think its entertaining to bludgeon the viewer with these facts? *sigh*

I know its hard to keep a virtually plot less show interesting for 19 episodes, but I couldn't shake the feeling that this one had a serious lack of variety. Still cute and with a great spirit of fun though. ;)

This episode felt nice to me, because I see myself in Hiyori. From the whole 'personal touches that no one else notices' to the occasional 'crazy things popping up in the head' when hit by inspiration and all.

Especially the face-making part. I recall my teacher asking me if I was okay, since I was grinning to myself sheepishly when I was drawing something enjoyable from my mind. And lol, I NEVER put my real name during bowling games either, though I don't use character names too. Nicknames I feel familiar to though.

I don't draw yuri though. In fact, I rarely draw girls since I tend to make them look boyish more than actually looking like girls. And I favor writing as much as drawing.

This time I'm not going to split out cultural and otaku. But there are just too many items here, so I'm probably going to split it into 3 posts. This here is the first post. If you can help add to it, please do so!

Kona no Petto
There sure are plenty of dog references in L*S. We know that the Hiiragi Twins wanted one, since EP13 the sponsor graphics has been a husky, and now Kona mentioned that she has a game dog. I think everyone can agree that the game she's playing must be Nintendo's first big hit for the DS, Nintendog. In this game you do talk to the dog, so it matches what she said.

The cutest Nintendog cover:
http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/9013/11248146410lo1.jpg

That CHINCHIN is ADORABLE!
Okay before you think I'm dirty, hear me out. As most of you have figured out, "chinchin" is what little children called a penis. But that's not what Tsukasa was asking... they were talking about DOGS so she was asking a very valid question about dog training terms. "ちんちん", in addition to be a term for male genital, is also used to describe the act of a dog standing on its hind legs. Why is it called that? Well, most Japanese, like you and me, believe that it's because when a male dog performs this trick, it's penis will be shown to all. Thus the girls all blushed (except Kona of course). What Miyuki said was that it's an imported term from Chinese. Well, I personally never heard of such usage, but it's possible. "親親" (qing1 qing1, same sound as ChinChin) means literally "kiss kiss". It's used when you wanted someone to kiss you. When a dog raises its hind leg and thus raise it's head, it's possible that the trainer could be asking the dog to raise its mouth high enough to kiss the trainer. Thus our MiWIKI has a plausible point.

Good looking Chinchin right there!

Gundam Research
Due to possible licensing issue, L*S could never reference Gundam out-right, even though you can tell they're dying to do so. Finally in this episode they can't wait much longer so they let it all out, hoping that their expertly applied censoring skills will avoid Bandai lawsuits. According to the Japanese Gun-ota, the following is what some anonymous akiba-kei chibi-cosplayer interview her lolicon gun-ota hentai chichi about:

Canon Series:

V - Mobile Suit Victory Gundam or V Gundam, 1993
W - Mobile Suit Gundam Wing or New Mobile Report Gundam W - 1995
X - After War Gundam X or Mobile New Century Gundam X - 1996

Parody Series:

Gundam Serial Murder Cases: It's actually "ポートピア連続殺人事件 (http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Portopia_Renzoku_Satsujin_Jiken)" (Portopia Serial Murder Cases) , a 1983 adventure game made by Enix for NEC PC and Nintendo Famicom.
Famous Detective Gundam: - Of course this is "名探偵コナン" or "Detective Conan/Case Closed" The image shown here looks like "Turn A Gundam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turn_A_Gundam)" though.

Gundam Chara Age versus Densetsu no Shojou A:

Amuro Ray (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amuro_Ray) (15) - K****a (18): According to wikipedia, Amuro was 15 at the beginning of One Year War. Perhaps by the end of the War, he's 16 and thus Girl A is correct.
Bright Noa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bright_Noa) (19) - K****a in years (20): Again, Bright is also just about 20 at the end of the One Year War. Guess that's the reference age point for the anonymous otaku - end of the original Mobile Suit Gundam series.

PC version of Portopia:

The Good Gift
When Kona-jiji returned with a bag of omiyage from the neighbor, Konata asked "What? A vase?". This is another Mobile Suit Gundam reference. Right before the Zeon colonel M'Quve (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%27Quve) died, he stated "Uragan, give the vase to Lady Kycilia, it's very valuable!". Only a highly-trained child of a Gun-Ota would automatically feel that something valuable should instinctively be a vase. A lolicon dad also should not using Princess Maker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_maker)-like lines when describing his own lilo-moe daughter.

Makube and his valuable Vase:
http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/2049/tmakube5nx6.jpg

Tsukasa's Fear
The movie Tsukasa used to keep herself awake is the very famous Japanese horror classic "呪怨 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ju-on)" (JuOn). The film has been remake by Hollywood as "The Grudge", and the most scary thing in that movie is how all the main characters living in Japan all became English speaking gaijin.

You know how long it takes to put on all this makeup?

Nanako the Violent Teacher
When Nanako said to Konata "Correct It!", that seemed to be reference to Mobile Suit Gundam's Bright Noa. When she hits Konata, two person appears in the flash": Akira and Kanata. The hitting scene is from the Thai martial arts movie "The Protecto (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427954/)r" (ワンカット in Japanese) starring Tony Jaa. The quotes on the black boards are from: Che Guevara, Jean-Paul Charles Aymard Sartre, and John Lennon.

It'll probably be Aya Hirano. Who else would they have that could be construed as exceptionally "exciting" by the writers in relation to the viewers desires.

My money's on Clerk Tomokazu, ala Tomokazu Sugita, ala Kyon.

Or maybe they'll have Taniguchi in the studio, which is essentially the same person. :heh:

maybe there will be real life Minoru? can a Twin Minoru Attack cause trouble to Akira-sama?

(I'd be happier if they choose the Aya route, ideed ^^ )

Famicom version of Portopia:

Ma and his Vase:

Tsukasa's Fear
The movie Tsukasa used to keep herself awake is the very famous Japanese horror classic "呪怨 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ju-on)" (JuOn). The film has been remake by Hollywood as "The Grudge", and the most scary thing in that movie is how all the main characters living in Japan all became English speaking gaijin.

You know how long it takes to put on all this makeup?

Part II coming soon!

I spent so much time trying to make sense of Juon that I guess I forgot to be scared. Japanese Horror relies more on the "It happens and it's scary" concept then the more often seen "This is why it happened and now you know why you should be scared" concept of western movies. In all honesty I don't think they care though. Watching Japanese Horror is like watching B-Movies with something of a budget.

As for expertly applied censoring, wasn't that pretty much the same thing they do with Hayate No Gotoku or so I hear, with the bleeping and censor bars, only horribly exagerrated. It sounds more like a joke than applied skill.

Today I finally watched the episode. To my mind it's among the best ones, I voted 10.

thanks a lot for listing the references.
Personally I'm not into Gundam thing so that part was a little confusing to me.
Also I wanted to ask about Kagami keeping her goldfish in a pond. I guess its more of a japanese style to have a garden with a pond. Does it work ok? I mean taking care of fish. As for me I live in an apartment block and I have a fish tank. So here beside food one needs an air pumb, a water filter and it is also recommended to add fresh water regularly.

Well first of all, have you seen her gold-fish? It's HUGE! If you put him in a bowl, he can barely turn around. Secondly, the Hiiragi's live in a single unit home with a yard, and many Japanese yards have ponds. Most of them try to keep carp in them instead of a big-assed gold fish though. It works fine, since many Japanese can't imagine having a garden without a pond or sound of water. Most of these ponds have electrical pumps for water circulation; if they can afford it a mini water-fall will be installed instead. It's not just the looks of a pond filled with carp; it's also the sound of water falling. A garden is a spiritual and relaxing place... the sound of water is essential.

Gundam Ace is a Kadokawa Shoten publication. They are the ones that have been pushing the references all this time it's Kadokawa. It's not a matter of what the studio wants in this case, but what Kadokawa wants, kind of like the Sunrise/Bandai relationship.

yep you're right. In my textbook there's some info about japanese gardens.
I also heard that carps are most common. perhaps traditional japanese gardens should have carps, only they are called 錦鯉.

I have some friends in Texas who have koi ponds amidst gardens ( my wife's grandfather had one that was regularly featured in the Houston newspapers ).

Biggest issue with koi is .... raccoons :)

If you head to the local bookstore there's bound to be a few picture books of Japanese gardens. Its calming just to flip the pages :)

Okay! Time for Part II! Say Say Say! (Sorry, couldn't resist Hard Gay reference).

Typhoon Family
When the girls were talking about the weather after the Typhoon, they were making a Japanese pun. What Konata was trying to say is "台風一過" (Tai Fuu Ikka), which is the calm weather after the typhoon, but she thought she the term was "台風一家" (Tai Fuu Ikka), which means "The Typhoon Family". Then she proceeded to make seemingly funny comment about the big typhoon's siblings. Kagami, knowing the real meaning of the term, asked Kona if she's serious. Of course she was. Seemed like Tsukasa was in Kona's boat as well. This happens to a lot of kanji-semi literate Japanese teens.

Pro Baseball In Japan
The Japanese pro-baseball season is now in full-swing. Overtime game would push midnight anime further back, forcing many otaku to re-adjust their VCRs. There are no Tivo-like service in Japan (I checked) so even with a DVR, they will have to do this manually. Thus many otaku in Japan hated baseball with a passion. Trivia: It seemed that Nanako's favorite Pro Baseball Team is the Lotte Chiba Marines (http://www.marines.co.jp/), and the main reason for this was that one of the team's star pitcher, 小林宏之 (http://www.marines.co.jp/team/41.html) (Kobayashi Hiroyuki), is Katsukabe KyoEi High School's most famous alumni. He helped the team won its' first Japan Series title in '05; I remember him cus I watched the game. What's really unbelievable was the fact that Kona-jiji was watching baseball... isn't he an otaku? Another trivia - The Koshien Summer High School Baseball Tournament (something I watch live every night) does NOT hurt the Otakus as much because 1. All games are played during the day and 2. The games have a 15 inning max rule. Otakus should only hate PRO baseball, but I doubt many can tell the difference.

All AC should be set at 28 Celsius. Maybe Kona-dad's not so lolicon after all...

Waitress Kagamin!
In the imaginary sequence where Kagami became a waitress, she's actually Cosplaying as an actual waitress of a famous Japanese restaurant chain for American food, Anna Miller's (http://www.imuraya.co.jp/annamillers/index.html). The restaurant actually started out in Hawaii (http://honolulu.citysearch.com/review/3189644) and then expanded to Japan, and it's famous for its breakfast and Pennsylvania Dutch pies. Cospla-Ota also love their cute and a little ecchi uniform, which is probably why it's in L*S. While you have to admit Kagami is super tsundere in their orange apron, It's too bad that KyoAni really failed to show the most interesting part of the uniform - the apron's "supporting feature" (see below).

Wonderful Discoveries!
The show they Hiiragi Twins are watching is again, a very popular TBS show "世界・ふしぎ発見! (http://www.tbs.co.jp/f-hakken/)" (Discovery of World's Wonder!). It's a combination travel/quiz show where they show the audience a place or city in the world and what' so special about it. There will be trivial questions asked during the show and the 6 or so tarento (talent-less guests) will try to answer them correctly in order to win the big prize - a travel package furnished by LOOK JTB (http://www.jtb.co.jp/lookjtb/) (name beeped), Japan's largest travel agency. The TBS staple is the longest running quiz show ever, having just broadcasted their 1,000th episode this year.

The joke here was the LOOK JTB travel package offered was "one month trip to (a frozen) Tundra", like that's an ideal vacation. The "wonder" featured that night was Australia's Ayer's Rock, based on the voice over from the TV. The Ota in me found that the show DID recently visit Ayer's Rock this year, with it's 998th episode (http://www.tbs.co.jp/f-hakken/mystery998_1.html) aired on 2/17/2007. The date doesn't quite match up but you can't expect KyoAni to be 100% accurate all the time.

Shower/Bath in Japan
Nanako-sensei was shown to have taken shower/bath before going to bed. This is normal in Japan, just in case you don't know from watching all those anime. People do not shower in the morning; a bath is always before bed time. The Japanese believe bath is stress-relieving and it's required for a restful sleep. Another reason for the absence of morning shower (unthinkable in the US) is the lack of the need for deodorant (good luck finding it in Japan) - when you don't really smell bad when you wake up, you're less likely to want a full shower. However, some Japanese has been adopting the morning shower to appear Westernized. These people ended up taking a shower in the morning and a bath at night, as many Japanese will tell you, they can't fall asleep without a proper Ofuro.

Interesting cultural info AV adds alot to the show. I was wondering why such a techy otaku like kona was using such a silly old method for recording her show...Can't believe with all the crazy gadgets that japan thinks up they dont have Tivo. :heh:

Alright, I do have to clarify this. I DID check on the status of Tivo-like device 2 years ago and there was nothing at the time... just to answer your question I've looked up the current DVR market in Japan today. Tivo was supposed to enter the Japanese market by 2006, but nothing came out of it. Sony did have a licensing deal with Tivo though and the current rumor is that some PS3s in Japan has a small Tivo logo in the back. Sony never offered a good DVR solution so it's very, very possible that PS3 will be running Tivo software soon. THAT would make DVR available to a lot of otakus.

Moreover, there are now a new crop of advanced DVRs with build-in programming guide Like Tivo now in the market place. Panasonic just offered a bunch of them recently, and they even offer a function to automatically record (http://ctlg.panasonic.jp/product/points.do?pg=05&hb=DMR-XP11) the first episodes of all dorama and ANIME. Yes they've even mentioned specifically anime, so perhaps the first adopters of these new DVR technology are in fact the Akiba-kei set. I think one of the main reason for otas like Kona to still use VCRs is cost - money is better spent buying limited edition Haruhi figurines than a Panny DVR.

A couple of things I want to address here. First of all, you'd be surprised how low-tech most otaku are in Japan. Although we commonly associate nerds/geeks with proficiency in Linux hacking skills, an anime otaku is not necessarily tech-savvy. There's another term for those who knows a lot about computers - Pasokon-otaku. Your average anime otaku probably knows a little more than your average consumer, being that most eroge can only be played on a computer, but not much more. They do not like to spend time tinkering with computer parts or coding ASP pages - I think they'd rather spend time playing games and watching anime. Thus even though there are a lot of cool technology in Japan, don't assume an anime otaku would take advantage of it. Some, like poor Kona, still stick to last gen analog technology to get their anime fix.

Secondly is the poor state of TV in Japan. NTT, the goverment-owned national telecommunication company, offers a 100MB fiber to most people in Japan. However, due to fear of monopoly from the private sector, they are prohibited from providing TV service to their customers. So in order to get cable TV, you'll have to get them from your local Cable provider. But here's the rub - Japanese land is super-expensive, and laying cable is almost impossible in some older neighborhoods. What's the option for cable vendors? They would have to RENT space from utilities or railways. However, in order to really reach the user-base, you'll need the TELEPHONE poles owned by, you guessed it, NTT. Since NTT is bend on offering TV service, they naturally made it very hard and expensive for cable vendors to use their poles. So the bottom line is, in order to get cable you'll need to be lucky enough to live close to a railway, and even when you do, your cable fee is very high. Most people then turn to Broadcast satellite TV services (BS, perhaps you've seen this logo in raws) IF the building they live in offer to put up an antenna for them. Most private homes go this route, but if you're in an apaato you're out of luck most of the time. Plus, BS is even more expensive than cable in term of monthly fee and equipment. Even under the BEST scenarios, you'll get at most 20-30 channels; compare that to the 300 plus channel comcast currently offers. Remember how Kona was crying about the fact she can't get cable? Now you know why.

For a guy who was one of the first Tivo users and have personally build many DVR Media PCs, I feel that I have to get this question correct. The AV in AVplaya stands for Audio-Visual after all (no, not Adult Video...).

Although we commonly associate nerds with proficiency in Linux hacking skills, an anime otaku is not necessarily tech-savvy.
You're thinking of "geek", not "nerd". :p

(OK, so it depends who you ask.)

I always thought:
Nerd - someone who's really obsessed/interested in anime, mtg, computers, etc. but not really an expert at any of them.

Geek - same as above but is an expert in them.

Honesty I don't really care what definition you use. Society basically butchered these terms so bad that it's impossible to deteremine the real definition. So whever.

I've found my new title - "Pasokon-Otaku"

That pretty much matches the definition my peers and my son's peers use.

"Geek" has evolved into a compliment (which is interesting given its linguistic roots).

"Nerd" is pretty much an insult no matter who delivers it.

Geeks are more likely to be technically inclined (as in they can build their own DVR and screw Tivo :) ) or at least recognize that expertise is required. Nerds are more likely to be exemplified by that loud monotonic guy sucking the fun out of a room while he quotes some horribly obscure rules passage to a card game (yes, there's some contradiction there).

Note that the definitions are actually more of a two-axis or three-axis overlap.
Expertise<--->Simple Obsession
Socially adept<----->"run away while not making eye contact"
... and of course, variety (sci-fi, d&d, sca, anime, railroad trains, etc)

Most people have wandering dots on the grid :)

Its kind of like watching the transmogrification of the word '"gay" from
happy, carefree ---> homosexual lifestyle ---> generally lame or uncool
... all three being correct or not depending on the context.

I would think DVRs (or computers with tv tuner cards) would be the smashing rage in Japan no matter *what* your signal source (especially ones with output connections or burners) but yeah, they seem to be quite rare on the japanese online vendors.

My definition:
Geek = Smart/obsessive about things that matter
Nerd = Smart/obsessive about things that don't

"Things that matter" are relative in mainstream popularity.

It's kind of surprising how middle class Asia tends to be a bit low-tech: the Hiiragis don't use the computer much, and I doubt they even have one. Schools discourage the use of technology in learning (imagine my surprise when I learn that American high schools use those huge graphing calculators), and people...just don't use comps that much. They prefer cell phones and handheld video games.

I dunno, I think this is really more a Japanese thing though. In Taiwan and Korea, most people have more than one PCs, and everyone is more tech friendly. In fact, one of the most popular accessories for ladies in Taiwan nowdays is a Windows Smartphone, and that's way before th iPhone days. I see less penetration of PCs in the average Japanese household, definitely. However, the Japanese are savvier when it comes to consumer electronics and they're willing to spend big money on them, as long as the form factor isn't too big. I would say that your average men are more interested in cool gadgets than anime otakus, since in Japan like the rest of Asia, tech knowledge is considered a cool and necessary everyday information for men (and increasing women), rather than a geek (did I use this correctly? ^^; ) thing. In Asia you'll find BAPE-wearing men and Prada-carrying women going gaga over the latest Sony 1080p LCD TV. Tech Geek is part of life, ANIME-Geek is not... yet. ^^

Heh, my definition of geek and nerd goes like this:

Geek - Someone who's obsessed with Anime, video games, computers, technology, but at the same time can retain a perfectly normal lifestyle.

Nerd - Someone who's obsessed with Anime, video games, computers, technology, but he/she cannot live without those things.

It really is surprising how Japan is low-tech considering how many of the high-tech stuff they made. Heh, I actually have one of those huge graphing calculators, and they certainly are pricey, mine cost about $120 US even though I bought it at Wal-Mart! But yeah, US schools tend to use technology as much as they can. Every time we have a essay assignment in English, my teacher always takes us down to the computer "labs" and we type it up there, she recommends getting a USB flash drive so you can use it between the school PC's and your PC, and if you missed a school day, she asks you to scan the homework or project(if possible) and email it to her, and this is only in the public schools, as far as I know, private schools actually provide laptops to their students, granted you pay for it with the tuition.

But it's kinda understandable that PC's have a low penetration rate in Japan, because their cell phones are practically computers already. All of Japan uses the brand new network called "3G" and it is as fast as broadband connections. Last I heard the standard data transfer rate was around 3Mbps, which is what my current DSL connection is using!

Actually not all of middle class Asia is low-tech, like AVPlaya has said, even one of the poorest Asian countries, my home country as well, the Philippines is rife with technology. I went and took a vacation there 3 years ago, and aside from the still rampant piracy of software/games/whatever, it's suprisingly more high-tech than the US. Cashiers at a McDonalds and Jollibee had Bluetooth headsets plugged in their ears, Taxi drivers have PDA's with them, it's just not something you can find in a poor country. I can't wait and see what new things they have up there next year.

Lol, Windows Smartphones? Are they on crack or something? I had a HTC Tornado/SDA for a week and the Windows interface was complete crap, meanwhile, Symbian in the Nokia N80 was so awesome, I can't wait to get my hands on a US version of the Nokia N95. At least they actually got some good stuff, I actually feel sorry for those who bought an iPhone, it's complete crap, there's no 3G, no 5 Megapixel camera, and of all things, you could've bought a PS3 with that money, don't forget the bill as well. The N95 might be $150 more than the JesusPhone, but at least it's price is actually worth it, hell, you may as well have bought the Meizu M8 (http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/13/meizu-m8-minione-closer-to-production-litigation/) if ya really wanted a touch screen.

That's backwards.

Nerdish stuff are more on the academic enthusiam. Like Math , Science, History etc.

Geekish stuff are hobbyists of popular culture. Like Trekkies, Star Wars Fans and Otaku.

Yes people Otaku is a subset of Geek.

One couldn't call Konata a nerd because she doesn't have a study habit.

Now Miyuki is nerd because she's a study bug. (Not to mention glasses are stereotypical of nerds because we sleep reading at night. Bad for eyesight habit.)

You can probably extend that to most of Asia, because my entire family prefer showers at night.
Yeah, showers at night is probably an Asian thing, although the Japanese are particular about their bath. I used to just take showers until I found out the joy of the bath first through spa, and right now I'm just out of my bath; beer in hand (milk is just as awesome), on a Friday night. Okay enough laziness.. let's get this finished up. A lot of Otaku Ref in this one so it maybe shorter - my otaku-knowledge isn't that fabulous as you all know. All this is from Part B (after first eyecatch).

Melon Pan!
Hiyori's lunch is another otaku staple food called the Melon-pan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melonpan). It's a sweet-bread that's popular in Japan and Asia. Although mostly green, Melon-pans are not made from melon fruit but it's named after its appearance. It gets its flaky top via a thin layer of cookie dough, while the rest is a sweet bread. Sometimes you can find them filled with custard or other fillings. Melon pan became an otaku favorite since it's the only food Shana from Shakugan no Shana will eat. A version of Melon pan also exist in HK and Taiwan, where its called "Pineapple Bread". It's unclear where the bread originated, but it's pretty much certain that is not Europe.

Also many Westerner will find it strange, but bread is absolutely huge in Japan. Every street has a bakery or sorts and most Japanese eat toasts for breakfast now (as you can tell from anime). IMHO bread in Japan and other part of Asia are 100 x better than the bread in the US, and since they really fuse the best of all worlds, the best bakeries in Japan are even better than the best bakeries in Paris. You really have to visit one of them to really know the incredible variety and flavors Japanese bread offers. Same goes with Cakes and other sweets, but that's another post altogether. :)

One of the best selling lunch food:

Bizarre Jump
Hiroyi's Awesome Twisting Action is A Reference to ジョジョの奇妙な冒険 (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure), one of the biggest shonen manga ever. At 92 plus volumes, it's also one of the longest. What she was parodying I have no idea; never got into Jojo.

It's bizarre that Jojo never got himself an anime.

Apollo Who?
The two chara in Hiroyi's non-slumping sketches are 王泥喜法介 (Odoroki Housuke) and 牙琉響也 (Garyuu Kyouya) from the DS hit game 逆転裁判4 (http://www3.capcom.co.jp/saiban4/) (Apollo Justice, Ace Attorney in the West). This is the 4th game of the Gyakuten Saiban series, the first 3 is know as "Phoenix Wright, Ace Attorney" in the West. Non-gamers like Yutaka have no idea who they are. Hiroyi is probably going to yaoi them in a doujin... from the looks of it, Odoroki is seme and Garyuu is uke).

Odoroki in the middle, while Garyuu is on top:

Cosplayer in Saitama
The cosplayers the girls meet are of course cosplaying Edward and Roy of "Full Metal Alchemist". The keitai strap "Ed" was holding is Al, Ed's poor body-less brother.

Even cosplayers are cuter in Anime...

Bowling Fun
The pseudonym Fujoshi Hiroyi reserved their bowling lane under was 枢木スザク (Kururugi Suzaku) of "Code Geass - Lelouch of the Rebellion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_Geass)" The CLAMP series seemed to be a favorite doujin target for the BL community.

SOS-Dan Bowlers and their score by the 7th frame:

HARUHI: 155 (she's good!)
KYON: 88 (he sucks!)
YUKI: 129 (she sucked at first but got better)
MIKURU: 19 (she's there for Kyon's enjoyment)
ITSUKI: 92 (busy watching Kyon's, most likely)

Okay, I think Suzaku's a uke...

Poster Bug
The poster Yutaka's trying to post is a newsletter from the Nurse's Office on Athlete's Foot (水虫, mizumushi) prevention. Due to the long raining season and the mostly humid condition of an island nation, Athlete's Foot is a problem bothering most people, especially active students. Everyone is taught how to prevent Athlete's Foot in school, and medication for them is a big category in Japan.

An office poster on Mizumushi prevention:
http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/4339/yobo1uq6.jpg

Attack of the 50 foot Yutaka
In our favorite Fujoshi's imagination, Yukata-chan became a gozilla-like monster. The picture she has in her head is a parody of the poster of the 1958 science fiction classic, "Attack of the 50 foot Woman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack_of_the_50_Foot_Woman)". Compare the anime to the poster below:

I think we'd all prefer a 50 foot tall Yutaka:
http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/6922/80460170vf7.jpg

YAOI?
These no-ota L*S girl sure know how to ask questions. First we have a question about chinchin, now Yutaka drops the bomb and ask the forbidden question: What is Yaoi. I think most people knows about it, so I'll just post the two possible meanings Hiroyi could have given:

Accepted Definition: "山なし", "落ちなし", "意味なし" (Yamanashi, Ochinashi, Iminashi), signifying the lack of climax, punchline, and meaning in a graphical story about two men having sex.

"Real" Definition : "やめて", "おしりが", "いたい" (Yamete! Oshiri ga Itai!), signifying what's usually said after the aforementioned men on men sex took place: "Stop! My butt hurts!"

Super Yaoi!

Sea of Trees
In the LC, Shiraishi bragged about being an "outdoorsman" for going to popular vacation spots like Jogashima Island (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%9F%8E%E3%82%B1%E5%B3%B6) (the location for all the live-action EDs). Akira then mentioned the benefit of "Forest Bathing (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%A3%AE%E6%9E%97%E6%B5%B4)", a popular excuse for outdoor travel as it was wildly believed that the air in the woods contain a lot of negative ion which will improve your health. I have never heard anyone using this term in the West.

Akira-sama then asked Shiraishi to take a trip to the "Tree Sea of Mount Fuji". The stated reason for the trip was to "fetch her some of Fuji's famous water". While Fuji-san's water is famous for tea-making (quality of water is a huge deal for tea-otakus), the parody here is that in a 1993 special of a very popular comedy show "ダウンタウンのガキの使いやあらへんで!! (Downtown no Tsukaiyaarahende!!) called the 罰ゲーム (Batsu Gemu), where a comedian was punished to goto France to fetch some Evian water (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%80%E3%82%A6%E3%83%B3%E3%82%BF%E3%82%A6%E3%8 3%B3%E3%81%AE%E3%82%AC%E3%82%AD%E3%81%AE%E4%BD%BF% E3%81%84%E3%82%84%E3%81%82%E3%82%89%E3%81%B8%E3%82 %93%E3%81%A7!!%E3%81%AE%E4%BC%81%E7%94%BB) from the source. The REAL reason for the trip was that the famous 青木ヶ原 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aokigahara) (Aokigahara or"Tree Sea") in the foothills of Mout Fuji is a popular suicide spot (http://www.seekjapan.jp/article-1/767/The+Suicide+Woods+of+Mt.+Fuji) for the Japanese. Due to it's location, it's also considered THE most haunted place in all of Japan, inhabited by kami, oni, and ghosts of past victims of suicide. Shiraishi is scared for that reason, but of course Akira-sama just wanted him to off himself while he's there... That's why Akira said "you have past the line of Death." The producers were probably to film his suicide for the finale ED. Oh Joy! I think death of Shiraishi is what many viewer were calling for.

Stuff on Shiraishi's neck: A cross, ring of garlic, and a couple of Japanese charms - all good stuff to bring to a haunted forest.

Spooky!

That chin-chin bit was excellent.
But this is the Hiyori + Minami x Yutaka chemistry that won me over.

Really, it depends on the area where you live in. In some places geek is someone who's tech savvy while nerd is someone academic savvy, while others have both of them being passionate about a certain thing, but geek is a 'certified expert' (through studies or what not) while a nerd is someone who just has passing knowledge about that thing (more of an amateur of sorts).

And of course, there's different connotations according to the region. Some places have geek as the compliment while nerd is derogatory. This often is related to social adeptness, with one nerd being the socially inept one.

And then there's places who has it the other way around. And of course there's someone out there who uses both interchangebly.

I'm really tempted to upload my Nerds: A Documentary that was showcased in this years Anime North just to showcase how people differ in their definitions of nerd and geek, but since the makers specifically said not to spread it over the web... XD

And lets not get into the way some people classify geek and nerd into the dork/nerd/geek spectrum...

Well, they just don't care too much about anything unimportant maybe.

And, as for the possibility of some quotation from Totoro or any of Ghibli's works, I guess it is utterly impossible. Since Hayao Miyazaki believes and once openly said that 'anime is basically for children', and more than that, he abhors those otaku and their cultures (and I believe no one ever was brave enough to oppose him.)
Making a long story very short, even if Kyoani staffs are all Shiraishi-minded, it still will be extremely hard to show them up in their own show.

The problem with this show (well, one of them anyway, since this show has several) is that Lucky Channel and the Shiraishi songs are such terrible notes to end on, they just leave a sour taste in my mouth. Someone needs to fire whoever made the decision to end each and every episode with Lucky Channel... [/ironic statement]

Other than that, this episode was strangely entertaining. I'm not saying it was funny, because it wasn't, but there was a certain charm to this particular ep. It's hard to explain, but it sort of felt like watching a repeat of one of your favourite Simpsons episodes from a decade ago for the ninth or tenth time... you don't exactly laugh at it, because you've seen it so many times before and all the jokes a familiar, but that familiarity is, for some reason, reassuring. But, no, this show isn't funny anymore, and hasn't been for the last six or so episodes. I generally judge anime comedies on how much they make me laugh - it's a simple criteria, but the genre really doesn't owe itself well to complexity. But, in all honesty, only the most exceptional comedies are still funny at this stage of their run... like, Ouran. Hell, even Hayate is starting to lose some of its luster.

Enough random ramblings. I guess, overall, this episode didn't feel like a complete waste of time, even though it wasn't all that funny, but Lucky Channel and Shirashi kinda ruin the experience.

Ahaa guess this one i dunno..thanks for the info

@marqafred (and darksider):
They're called Tanuki ... little raccoon-bear-like woodland kami with overblown testicles (fertility being a Good Thing, ya know). They're extremely pervasive icons kind of like norse trolls are in Norway.
ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanuki
From the wiki:
A common schoolyard song in Japan makes explicit reference to the tanuki's anatomy:

Tan Tan Tanuki no kintama wa,Kaze mo nai no ni,Bura bura (Roughly translated, this means "Tan-tan-tanuki's testicles, there isn't even any wind but still go swing-swing-swing". Technically, Totoro was a different sprite, a kami-spirit version of a squirrel (or so my son's JP teacher thinks) hence the adoration of acorns by him and his minions. There's some talk that the name Totoro is a childish twist of the loanword totooru (troll), using troll in the ancient 'spirits of the forest' sense rather than the very recent D&D or WoW sense.

I vaguely recall a japanese commercial promoting plastic surgery that had Little Red Riding Hood dancing with some adult-sized woodland creatures who got boob-implants (LRRH executed a loli thing by just cupping where breasts would go later as she was probably about 9). The punchline was the appearance of the Tanuki who'd opted for surgically enhanced testicles the size of basketballs which prompted a laughing "omigod" double-take from the little girl.

Aren't japanese commercials .... well they leave my local commercials in the dust in regard to over-the-top zany. That's why I wish the subbers would just leave the commercials in sometimes :)

Here's a fair introduction to japanese woodland spirits and their connection to Shinto:

Yup, some Japanese commercials are superb. I'd also wish subbers leave the commercials, but most anime commercials are for.. other animes. :) It's the prime time dorama or variety show commercials that's wacky or cool. Good thing we can see a few of them on nico or youtube. CM sometimes have bigger influence than the show themselves... a recent CM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkISx0IreMk)for Shiseido Kabuki Shampoo with 6 new girls created a sensation; many young women started to imitate these girls.

The raw capturers usually cut out the commercials. Normally anything you see in the release was there in the original and anything missing wasn't there. I had been poking around for the lucky star commercials for ep 16 and such, but they don't seem to exist outside of video sites.

aye, I'm sure they just figure no one could possibly be interested in such things. Like AVPlaya says, 'youtube is your friend' as well. My son has acquired a superb knack for spotting hilarious foreign commercials (the europeans have a top notch irreverence in their commercials as well).

I won't cut American commercials completely out... the Fedex commercial of "Doom!" punched my funny button. The little G**co gecko is hilarious in that wistfully peering out his office window commercial ("hey, you can't park there...") Its just a shame more marketing doesn't pick up on "funny sells" because maybe I'd actually watch their commercials...

NO! That is merely a myth that has grown up around scurrilous rumours originally propogated by those damn kitsune! A bunch of arrogant elitist snobs, the whole bloody lot of them. It is hardly my people's fault that while the kitsune "gentlemen" were at the head of the line for looks, they were so busy preening themselves that they failed to queue up in time when the O-kami were busy handing out certain other important attributes.

Heh, finally got to watching ep.19. Gave it 9/10. Damn good work I say.

OP
-Its the same as always. LOL

Part A
-Who doesnt change their voice when talking to animals? Dogs, cats...fish(?):eyebrow: Doesnt matter. Kona has no right to say what she did to Kagamin. LOL:D
-Tsukasa's little question on the origin of the dog command "chin-chin" *LOLs BIG TIME* made things a bit uncomfortable for Kagamin and Miyuki-san. LOLs
-The Gun**m talk!! WTF!? Why am I getting bleeped!?:uhoh: G**dam, Gu**am, **ndam!!:twitch:?
-Tsukasa and Horror: What Miyuki-san says does make sense...but its not completely true. Although I guess in my case it does apply.(in a way) At my age I'm still afraid of "Chucky", the killer doll thats alive:upset: but "Rozen Maiden"!? I F'ing love it. LOLs
-Yuu-chan's misunderstanding of Konata and Yui-nee's intelligence and her misled ideas of them being helpful. LOLs...poor Izumi-sensei too, even his own daughter and niece thinks him as being unreliable.:heh:
-Kogami Akira appears in the main ep!?:Not really...appears briefly when Ms.Kuroi strikes Konata...:twitch:Was that Miss Kanata!?
-Izumi-sensei....needs to close the Bathroom door!!:frustrated: You have 2 High School girls in the house, THINK DAMMIT!!...I wonder if he was always like that or if he started that after Kanata's death?
-Konata's choice of clothing in the house.:p "What if Yuu-chan copies you!?" quote: Izumi-sensei. I think that her fan base would get MUCH larger, thats what.
-Kagamin acts out the "clumsy girl". WIN
-Ms.Kuroi: Life is catching up...(T^T)

B Part(Focused on Hiyorin, WIN!!)
-Hiyorin's faces...if you ever draw than...well, theres not much to say on this I guess. Its natural, that it, end of topic.:heh:
-Yuu-chan asks a hard-to-answer Q.:heh::uhoh:
-Hiyorin and the lottery: Anyone else besides me and Hiyorin experience a similar event? Win a bit of cash on a lottery but soon after misfortune causes events draining the exact amount away from you?
-The "FALL": WTF!?:uhoh: Was the "transformation" necessary? It scared the crap out of me when Hiyorin changed...at first I thought that she flipped around to catch Yuu-chan and Minami's expressions to use in her drawings but the real reason makes more sense to me. I'd do the same...just, not "overdoing" it.:heh:
-Yuu-chan and Minami's take on art: Yeah, this is pretty much reality. Most common people cant notice the small details and changes in an artists' work.:heh:
-FMA cosplay: No reason for it, but WIN. Hiyorin did what we'd all do. LOLs:D
-Using anime names in public places: Who hasnt done this atleast once or alteast thought about it? Hm? Be honest, almost all of us have...havent we?:uhoh:
-Yuu-chan x Minami fantasies of Hiyorin: Aahh, so thats what Hiyorin sees. LOL...Yuu-chan MUST NEVER get taller than what she is now. As Hiyorin says, its against the world's natural order.
-Yuu-chan asks an even harder question to answer....ep. finishes.:heh: I wonder what Hiyorin answered?

LC
'bout time they got rid of Shiraishi. Will he back for the remainder of the series? Hopefully not.;)

ED
Shiraishi sings again...but atleast we didnt have to look at him. Also, in the caps they suggested that we enjoy it without sound. I've done so, thanx for the advice KyoAni

Parts that didnt mean much but I liked it so...
-Ms.Kuroi slept through an whole day...where did her Sunday go? (T^T)
-Yui-nee is reading FATE.
-The bird(?) hanging in Kona's room? Char?
-Yui-nee's excuse of not knowing how to anwer Yuu-chan's question.
-WHO IS THE Ryouou school idol? Statistically I'd guess it'd be Miyuki-san...what do you all think?

The problem with this show (well, one of them anyway, since this show has several) is that Lucky Channel and the Shiraishi songs are such terrible notes to end on, they just leave a sour taste in my mouth. Someone needs to fire whoever made the decision to end each and every episode with Lucky Channel... [/ironic statement]
Ah, another person who thinks like me...about Shiraishi, I personally like LC, just without Shiraishi. LOLs

Just saw the AFK sub. Now, I'm already paranoid enough about translations, though I'm by no means an expert on the language. From the Lum fan in Otaku no video to the latter Animego UY subs, I've learned to be suspicious. It's just... the AFK Haruhi subs are the only ones I've seen and... now I wonder. Look at Tsukasa's question at the beginning of this episode. I was aware of the "turn on factor" for "moe" substitution and was OK with it, but this "adaptation" for a joke that the higher ups didn't think us English speakers had the time or inclination to look up is just... disturbing. This almost 4kids territory. I guess my question, to anyone who's seen multiple subs or is just familiar with the original Japanese meaning, is, has anyone else noticed this type of falsification in other episodes? Should I go back and start over with another group?

If so, Guerrand is doing great so far. They lack the OP lyrics, but it's not like we haven't seen that twenty times already. The only thing stopping most people is the usual subbing group loyalty/organization.

Translation challenge: Translate that joke regarding dogs including Miyuki's comment into an English sub. Difficulty: You are not allowed to use notes, and you may only modify the origin country in Miyuki's line. Go!

That said, where are you going to look it up? Urbandictionary doesn't have it. Google only has it because of Jaalin's post. (Chinchin dog command was the search. If you really cared, you can put it together off multiple links on multiple pages under the default settings.) Wikipedia has it in Japanese, but not in English.
(Most people don't even look on google anymore, they just ask in the first net chat device they can find.)

There was no falsification. The English sub was an attempt to be accurate to the meaning of the Japanese. It was not literal and was not as dirty (IMO) as the original. Whether it was good or not is your opinion. There was no intention to make the joke less dirty.

That all said, these types of changes are very rare. Rare means, at most, once every 5 episodes.

(By the way, this is not even close to what 4kids does. 4kids intentionally tries to change the meaning.)

(Note: This post does not imply that I agree with how it was handled.)

I'm suspicious in general until I see that the translator has done some good work.

You know... the interesting thing about humor is that having to look it up or having it explained to you often makes it not funny anymore. If you want to watch a show with subtitles and understand what's going on, a.f.k. does a pretty good job. I don't know about you, but most people will want to watch an episode without wanting to go on a treasure hunt every 5 minutes because things weren't fully translated into coherent English but instead were riddled with notes and everything. If you really want to know what they are saying in Japanese, go learn Japanese or ask someone who knows Japanese. Anime subtitles are not here to teach you Japanese. If you think you can learn Japanese solely from subtitles then you are sorely mistaken.

This almost 4kids territory. I guess my question, to anyone who's seen multiple subs or is just familiar with the original Japanese meaning, is, has anyone else noticed this type of falsification in other episodes? Should I go back and start over with another group?
Strato takes a few liberties here and there which I might not like, but overall he does a pretty good job. Besides, he is one of the few translators who actually understand the original meaning of stuff he's translating.

I thought he pulled the chinchin/wiener/hot dog double-entendre very well. It may have upset the purists but, hey, the unintentional innuendo is still here.

EDIT:

As a comparison, it did come smoother than the two egg/one egg twins bit in one of the first episodes.

Well, this really isn't the "back seat translation critique" thread :)

If you don't like what a.f.k. is doing, there's other fish out there. a.f.k. has a set of translation principles and they are following them pretty consistently. For the purposes of most people, they're quite acceptable and probably better than whatever the "professionals" will do when L*S gets the R1 treatment release. So far there've only been about 4 or 5 instances where *I* might have chosen differently in translating and the rest are well within the matrix of "how would this be said casually in english".

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with a.f.k's translation. I think they handled the chin-chin joke extremely well, it held similar meaning and comic effect. When I watched the Guerrand sub of it I had no idea what the hell they were talking about, and I didn't until I came and read it here. Most people that watch fansubs don't browse through discussion boards or comb through wikipedia everytime they don't understand something. So having the type of sub that a.f.k. does available is good. If you don't like that, there's always the Guerrand type. It's a free market system in a way, there's two choices and you pick the one you prefer. Complaining about the other one is silly and a bit elitist.

This is quite funny and (in Japanese taste) good natured. Anabuki is not a cosmetic surgery clinic - it's a constriction firm (http://www.anabuki.com/company/index.html). The point of the CM is that the firm will customize to your building need.. they build OFFICE buildings. It's rather light hearted. Nothing pervy going on here.

Risking taking this further off topic...

The tanuki is traditionally often depicted with enormous testicles. That trend has dropped off in modern times, but it's still a common sight. :)
