Just a friendly warning, if I see another post about afk still doing this series or not, wondering if guerrand is better etc.etc. , or more generically another off topic post, I'll lock the thread until the episode has aired.

Tell me how these posts were related to episode 20 discussion, which would be the purpose of this thread. Also, next week I'll create the episode thread a bit later because it's not the first time this happens.

Sorry 'bout that, I guess the whole lot of us got carried away.

Well if it wasn't just one blatant Haruhi insert... Where can I get the soda?

More Haruhi this week. I bet ya all want that soda! :D

BTW, I don't see Shiraishi in this week screenshots... I wonder why!

Hehe. the guest turns out to be someone who hasn't showed up from Haruhi.

The guest is none other than Daisuke Ono. I believe he's filling in for Shiroishi as he adventures through the deadly forest of Mt. Fuji.

I have to say though, Kagamin in a tanktop is hawt.

Good God, were Haruhi's melons that big? While on that topic, it seemed to me that Miwiki also had bigger melons as well, wierd.

But yar, is that soda real by any chance?

Definitely great episode, all I need is the subs and it'll be perfect.

Yutaka resting on Minami's lap ftw.

That was a great Haruhi sequence. Leaving aside the question of whether there are or are not too many refs in the show, this one was wonderful, imo.

And I think I want a show concentrating on the first years, lol. They are terrific. Glad to hear a bit more Patty (Sasaki Nozomi) this week.

(despoilered since sub is out)
The Haruhi moment is a quick over-the-top commercial ad complete with parodic "over-boobed" shots that the girls are watching...

And yes, Kagamin just exudes pheromones in a tanktop... it seems like every Kagami appearance was a 'hot stuff money shot' ... just watch how she sits.

But yar, is that soda real by any chance? While we don't know if the soda can that Haruhi held does exist or not, I do know there is indeed a Haruhi can drink in the form of some green tea that was "made by Mikuru." The drink comes in two can desings: one featuring Haruhi; the other with Mikuru and Tsuruya.

Very good ep that I loved from the begining to the end.
Weird bugs in 3dCG :eyespin:
Kona's dad !
Poor Miyuki at drill-dentist
I WANT THIS SODA !
Very nice scene at the fireworks.
Short LC which is sometime a good thing, it was good to hear Daisuke Ono.
Crazy MAD ending, i laughed so much, i jump off my chair and started dancing like this fool. :heh:
Also Tsukasa's seiyuu is so lovely and cute

Looks like they're doing the old fallback again this episode. I just knew a Haruhi related soft drink was on the way. A cool 20 it turns out to be a real product, possibly Coca Cola muscling in on the Otaku market via a joint-venture. Though ever tie-in food product I've ever tried has tasted awful. For example, Mike's Secret Sauce from Space Jam was like powdered milk, Bertie Bott's Every Flavoured Beans were overpriced Jelly Bean's that didn't taste all that great and Ninja Turtles Ooze was slimy, sugary and upset my stomach. Hopefully they have slightly better standards in Japan for this kind of thing if it does exist, WHICH IT WILL MARK MY WORDS!

I was wrong about the guest too, but can you blame me, the person it actually should have been expected, but I pictured it being a little more showy in keeping with Lucky Channel Trends. It was actually:

The absolutely must be cast in every Kyoani show Daisuke Ono, without his casting in at least one role the whole thing falls apart. This mean the only person from Haruhi left to make an appearance is Goto Yuko.

. Perhaps they want to cram in some ecchi fanservice near the end since they haven't met the necessary quota beyond what was shown in episode 6. Haruhi's breast size seemed to fluctuate a bit in the show itself and certainly in the artwork. Maybe the key is another jab at the 2ch artwork featuring the large breasted Haruhi, specifically one picture of her in a bikini very similar to the one seen in the eppy.

Lucky Staruhi soldiers on to the bitter end.

I have not seen the episode yet... but I am betting that this is the drink they're referencing:

http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=1093814&postcount=931

It's not soda, but tea made by Mikuru.

...I just knew a Haruhi related soft drink was on the way. A cool 20 it turns out to be a real product, possibly Coca Cola muscling in on the Otaku market via a joint-venture....I never bet, but one thing makes the enticing possibility of a real product unlikely: there was no name on the can, just the pic of Haruhi and the size of the can ("Big 1000ml" = a little over a US quart). The design looked like Coke, but had a yellow stripe as well. However, it may happen yet: never underestimate the power of the possibility of making money. Pizza Hut (formerly owned by Pepsi) got product placement going in a big way in Code Geass. Maybe Coke will join the fray. Once big companies start advertising in anime, the medium has arrived, lol.

The can shown in the episode doesn't appear to be the tea that TnAdct1 and AVPlaya refer to, since the can design is different. The TV ad does say, however, that it's a "time-limited" product.

As always, Lucky Star is fun to watch. I especially enjoyed the mosquito part and the part where Kagami read Mirai Nikki and the other one which I've read but can't remember the name of...

Maybe I should try the mosquito thing...

A green tea mix made by Mikuru? Must be just water then! :D

What if Itoshiki-sensei of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei makes an appearance and hands Shiroshi some rope as they both discuss how they're in despair?

That would be freakin' awesome IMO.

Just watched on air.

Overall not that impressive, but stable. Konata's unique deeds and thoughts on okaku things, and Kagami's pragmatic attitude really shined on the former half of the episode.

I didn't like the latter half that much, but still enjoyable. Nyamoo-shaped fireworks!

And the ED part...
"Ma'am, I know you’ve wanted THIS!"
Now I must admit I underestimated Shiraishi...

http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/7512/shiraishi2bt9.jpg
That's Fukuhara Kaori (Tsukasa-chan).

For the first six minutes, Tsukasa-chan was basically a cardboard character.

Kagamin: Why are all these bishoujo game protagonists female magnets?
Kona-chan: Otherwise there'll be no story.

Kagamin: Why do all these bishoujo game heroines have no boyfriend?
Kona-chan: Otherwise there'll be no story.

So true, LOL. (Also shivers at hearing all of Kona-chan's bishoujo game girls sounding like Orochimaru from Naruto, since they're all voiced by Kujira. :D )

Poor Miyuki (or as the 2ch fans like to call, "Mi-WIKI") going to the dentist.

Tsukasa-chan bragging to Kona-chan about how her art homework won in a competition, thanks to her dad. At first he only helped out a bit, but then he got more and more passionate and ended up taking over completely. LOL

Wonder if that Haruhi endorsed SOS Brigade drink is actually on sale in Japan?

Yu-chan asking about what present her friend should give for her boyfriend's birthday, but she's asking the wrong girls. :D (All three are STILL single, amazingly. )

Yu-chan shocked and at a lost after realizing that she's still on last name terms with Minami (got too used to calling her "Iwasaki-san"), until Minami saves the day once again.

Soujirou: Kona-chan, you're free to do what you like. Daddy won't stop you.
Kona-chan: Then maybe I should go find myself a boyfriend.
Soujirou: ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! :heh:

The fireworks scenario:

- Tsukasa-chan bumping into the station turnstiles "NANJAKORYAA!?"
- The girls only now realize Miyuki and Minami are neighbours
- Still amazed Miyuki's klutzy mom Yukari managed to survive in today's world :D
- Poor Hiyorin, apparently Minami's doggy doesn't like otakus too much :D
- Yu-chan lying her head on Minami's lap = pure win

Shortest Lucky Channel ever seen. Finally, even Ono Daisuke has appeared, replacing poor Shiraishi as assistant, as Shiraishi is on a suicide mission to the haunted forest under Mt Fuji, lol.

Akira-sama: So you're not a crow this time, huh? - Referring to Ono's role as Sora the crow in AIR (I won't go into AIR spoilers here, so don't worry).
Ono: And you aren't a dog either. - Referring to Akira-sama's seiyuu, Konno Hiromi's role as Potato in AIR.
Akira-sama: Piko~ - Potato's trademark sound LOL

Four of the five SOS Brigade members have made appearances in Lucky Star now, with two as regular casts. All that's left is Gotou Yuuko.

Shiraishi's (the live action one) dancing ED was hilarious, that's all I'll say.

Overall, things didn't pick up until the second half. So 9/10, guess it can't be helped as I've already seen three superb eps in a row.

Just watched it... love it. Another 10 from me.

Love it when Kona ask Kagami "why doesn't female otaku want to date male otaku?", as if she's the male otaku and kagami's the fujoshi. Kagamin answered the question half-way before she realized she's admitting to her secret identity. More fodder for the Yuri folks? I kinda agree with Kona that a women into the "2 dimension world" is sinks further than guys; i always though BL-kei fujoshi has more passion than the akiba-kei dudes.

3-D fly and Mosquito! These two are the most realistic things in the entire show! (yeah even more then the ED 3-D seiyuus)

Like the cultural reference here... it's actually making fun of pop culture instead of just referencing them.

Miyuki can't be a doctor.

That Haruhi CM.. that's can't be her.. she's a B to C-cup... this Haruhi can play Mikuru; she has at least an E cup.

Very specific reference to "Dragon Sakura" the manga and dorama. I'm going to have fun writing this one. The dorama was fun...

Kagami love to studies... She studies with Kona Four AND her own class. She really want to be in Todai Law school. Damn, she'll be driving Lexus her first year out of college.

I still don't get why no guys wanted to confess to Tsukasa. The other 3 I understand, but Tsukasa's the kind of girl a least a dozen guy wants in a Japanese HS. Come on Shiraishi... work it!

First time Minami and Miyuki appeared together... I was wondering all the time - do they know how close those two are?

Miami's Anti-Fujoshi dog.

The question is now, when will the first kiss between Minami and Yutaka happen.. Even Konata knows and she's not even that in to the Rotten world. This kind of thing is rather common in in the real world; small fragile girls often fall in love first with a taller, athletic girl. Not as shocking as you might think.

The fabulous guest is Ono Daisuke! I always thought he's a pretty good looking male seiyuu, I mean during the Haruhi concert he's the only one really looked like his anime counter part (okay, Sugita actually looks like Kyon too.). Now he's an anime bishounen chara.. Soon all the seiyuus will just play themselves in an anime.

Live in Juu-kai! And Shiraishi has full-filled his purpose! Hope it was painless. Sob.

Oh.. Kaorin dancing with Minoru in his whacked parody of a popular WEDDING song, "Oyomesanba" (Bride's Samba), with his "Groom's Rumba". He really want to marry this girl neh? After watching the video of the four L*S girls together, I must say he made a good call. Won't you like to have Tsukasa talk to you ever day?

Here's the original song, sang by the original singer at a famous idol wedding:

tCF1lMI04B0

As for what was the drink... well, the can looked like Coke, but I think it's a parody of a coke commercial. I just can't find which one (neither can the 2ch set). Soda is not big at all in Japan. You'll be hard-pressed to find Soda in a a Conbimi. You'll find stacks of teas, sports drinks, coffee, yogurt drink and other fancy stuff, but not that many Soda on the shelf. This is why the two most recent anime drinks are Eva Coffee and Mikuru Tea.

Similar to Korea last I was there - most places had a small section for soda (I love the skinnier, taller shape of soda cans there, btw; I can actually wrap my hand completely around one of them :) ) and the rest of the aisle would be given to all the other juices and things. However I wouldn't say it's hard to find soda in Korea -- many vending machines carried the same sodas you find here, just with the logo all mashed up in Korean. :)

In particular I really like sports and yogurt drinks, and occasionally I'll drink the cold coffee. (I also love the kids drinks that are shaped like certain characters... Hello Kitty and Pokémon drinks! XD )

Ahh, Konata hunting for rare items even IRL, can't beat that..but there isn't that much collectable random stuff in normal countries!

I doubt Yutaka x Minami goes any further in the anime, there is no romance in Lucky Star, if there were they'd have to make enough of it to satisfy all sorts of fans (only romance in the anime a "rotten world" one = no good :D)

And mosquitoes, they're very much a pest in where I am, but by October I become immune to the infectuous effcets of mosquito stings. Wish the immunity kept up over the winter, too.

Good episode, not great, gave it an 8/10.

The female otaku not wanting to date male otaku part made me laugh, I agree with most of their conclusions. To be honest I'm not sure I'd want to date a Otaku female, I generally prefer girls with somewhat different interests.

Kagami's observation's about dating sims were spot on, even if you don't play any of the games, if you watch the anime based off of it these girls should have boyfriends. Plus these indecisive male leads with generally weak personalities seem to attract everyone. Now that doesn't keep me from watching some of them, but her points are well taken ;x

I cracked up when Yu-chan asked the girls about relationship gift advice. To be honest if this was reality I couldn't imagine that at least Tsukasa wouldn't have a boyfriend. She seems like the type guys would ask out a lot, I can see some being scared off by Kagami's aggressiveness and Kona-chan's oddities.

In the fireworks scene I was half-expecting Hiyori to pull out her sketchbook when Minami and Yu-chan were sitting on the bench like that. Speaking of the scene, I liked the Patty screen time, but I want more! Her seiyu is great!

Good that LC was short this week, more material for the regular show. And the ED didn't make much sense to me until I read AVPlaya's explanation.

Of all manga Kagami-sama was reading i could only identify two...

namely Ga-Rei (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=3261) and Mirai Nikki (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=6765), Kagami-sama has good taste in Manga.

Lucky Star is back to hopping around as though the storyboard has Tourette's. *sigh* Oh, well. Not really any moments I found outstanding, but there was a lot of good, and the low periods weren't boring. I confess I had some warm fuzzies when the entire group was finally together. :)

My reaction to the Haruhi commercial was as follows.

"What's cleavage doing in my Lucky Star?!...Oh, it's Haruhi...OK, now I'm feeling Kaioshin-rage, this is TOO MUCH--and Haruhi's breasts are not so enormous as that... Oh, it seems to be self-satire...I can live with that, but I could have done without it."

The Air references in Lucky Channel were great, but I was so tired when I saw it, I couldn't figure out what they were referencing! I'm a huge fan of Air, so I'm very ashamed of myself, but I'm blaming it on the fact that I hadn't had my nap.

It's a large version of "彗星ヒヨコ" (Suisei Hiyoko) from the Gundam parody 4-koma manga "機動戦士ガンダムさん" It's in my EP19 Ref post part I, where I have a picture of it.

Not surprisingly, that Haruhi insert was bound to cross the "Line of Tolerability" for some people, like you and Kaioshin (whose line for this show is set so low that it's almost always crossed :D ). It has not crossed mine, but Shiraishi's live action ED this week came close.

I've actually not minded at all any of the Haruhi moments in the series, until that point. I think it was too much, but the fact that they really seemed to be poking fun at their own Haruhi-insertion made it passable for me.

I thought the Anime Ono came across as especially gay... perhaps they've finally realize that the only glaring hole for L*S for total and utter otaku domnation was the lack of a BL pair; we have a short, ugly guy called Shiraishi playing solo for 19 weeks now. So Now they've figure out that they've need TWO guys to make a YAOI fantasy, so they've brought out the seiyuu of everyone's favorite ambiguously gay chara, "Make it like a Tree" Itsuki. Oh brilliance... now even BL Day in future COMIKET will have Lucky Star presence.

So the big (fujoshi) question is, who's seme and who's uke? Please refer to this blog post (http://bangin.wordpress.com/2007/08/03/the-classification-for-%e6%94%bb%e3%82%81seme-and-%e5%8f%97%e3%81%91uke/)from one of my favorite blogs for terminology reference.

I think some may think Shiraishi is automatically seme, being so dorky and, well, MALE. From this angle I conclude that Shiraishi is へたれ攻め (hetare-zeme); or a seme who is reluctant or hopeless. If Ono is uke, then he is surely オレ様受け(ore-sama-uke), or an uke who's quite arrogant and narcissistic. I can see Ono call himself Ore-sama. :) If the role is reversed, I can see Ono being a 鬼畜攻め (kichiku-zeme), or a cold, perverted, brutal seme, while Shiraishi being just a regular, Shota-like uke.

Well either way, Hiroyi must be a happy camper. She gets Yuri AND Yaoi in the same show.

I've quit rating episodes of this show, since I love them all. They're all nines, I guess, for me.

There is so much to like: the ideas, the characters, the animation, the character design, the voices, the gentle pace, the sweet romance between Yuu-chan and Minami-chan (which I agree will go little further than it has).

One of the nice throwaway lines this week: Kona-chan's quiet naruhodo ("Ah, I see...") when Miyuki's mom revealed how dojikko she was herself.

I can't claim to have loved Shiraishi in the ED, but I found Kaorin's smiling attempts to follow him really charming. I liked it that the main part of the show was a bit longer this week.

And I agree that it would be great to see Itoshiki-sensei show up. Was it just coincidence that the same scenic spot was mentioned in both shows (Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and this)?

Someone mentioned the hands seeming poorly done last week, and since I particularly loved the hands in episode 1, I looked carefully this week. I find the way hands are blobby but extremely well animated once they move very interesting. I think this is part of the visual structure of the show, one of the ways Yamakan came up with to keep costs down while still providing occasional KyoAni awesomeness.

Finally saw the subs, and this is really is a great episode. It was really hilarious to see that even Konata can see the Minami x Yutaka thing going on, too bad she's too blind to see that she's in the same boat with them, with obviously you know who. And yes, I still believe!!!

Konata x Kagami FTW!

Can anybody vector this or make it a wallpaper? The whole image is just waiting for a wallpaper treatment! Anybody willing to do it?

With Kaorin in every ED with Shiraishi in it, can we assume that something is going on between the two? I highly doubt that their appearances are solely because they're in the same show. Shiraishi has written a song for her, coupled with her looking like a bride, this time he sings about a bride, anybody see the pattern here?

Kinny, I think you should book a flight to Japan already, you may be too late... :D

As for an Shiraishi X Daisuke, I hope to God it doesn't happen, there can only be one partner for Daisuke, and that is none other than Tomokazu Sugita! Kyon X Itsuki FTW!

10/10...thats goes without saying, every episode of Lucky Star also will get full 10 from me =D

LoL-ed at some facts in this episode

Kagami - Why are the main characters of those games always popular without question?
Konata - Dunno..coz probably it won't be a game if they're not popular enough
My answer - LoL..isn't that the reason for this is so obvious? Why would people wanna make a money from something that isn't popular at all..

Kagami - How come the heroines of those games look so cute and have such great personalities, yet never have a boyfriend? They're all there for your picking..
Konata - Dunno..coz probably it won't be a game if they had boyfriends.
My answer - LoL...coz its your job to find a boyfriend for the heroines...or else it won't fit the name "date sim" game.

And among the quote from the game that Konata played

- Gosh you have to do your homework >> Kagami..this has to be Kagami
- I..it's not like i'm worried about you or anything >> Only tsundere type character will say something like this..and again the first anime girl character i had in my mind gonna say something like this is none other than Kagami
- Alright..if you say so,"insert character name",i'll do it >> I can't find anyone from Lucky Star that fit enough to say this kind of quote...

And what's with the "strengthening the arm to lock the mosquito from flying away"...i never heard something like that...

Love the fireworks scenery..along with Yutaka-Minami scenes..

To think that Lucky Star only left with another 4 episodes...i really wish they make a new season for it T.T

O wow... After this episode, I no longer understand what is the relationship between Yutaka and Minami. I mean... you can say that they are just extremely good friends, and since Minami doesn't seem to have many friends, she becomes extremely attached to Yutaka. You can also say that they both have some sort of "beyond the friendship" feeling towards each other... even Konata senses it.

Anyway, another awsome episode. I ma give it..... a 9.

Kagami's observation's about dating sims were spot on, even if you don't play any of the games, if you watch the anime based off of it these girls should have boyfriends. Plus these indecisive male leads with generally weak personalities seem to attract everyone. Now that doesn't keep me from watching some of them, but her points are well taken ;xI just actually thought about Kanon after that scene and realised that it kinda did make sense why none of the main female characters had boyfriends.

I've heard of foot fetish, but could this be the beginning of a new brand of hand fetish?:heh:

Really the only thing I've noticed in terms of animation fluctuation is sometimes the faces get a little weird, nothing overtly Yashigani, but....weird. If your looking for something where the artstyle flucuates in distinctive manners to create visual symbolism (arguably in a good way) you'd probably want to check out Gurren-Lagann, which has an art style that shifts in and out of various forms of exposure, lighting and colour palletes depending on the mood of the scene. It's kind of like when you get the one random scene in Lucky Star that's animated differently from the usual pastel style, only with different atmosphere and quite a bit longer.

Oh and Achoo.....I HAVE FURY!

In Asian countries, the bonds between girls are strong. Girls spill their guts to each other, take bath together, and hold hands while shopping. Sleeping together or adjust each other's bra is common place. This is just between normal girls.

The split between sexes is also greater during the teenage years. Many girls won't have a friend of opposite sex until way after high school. Unpopular girls like Yutaka, lacking attention from the guys, often seek out other girls for emotional support and form interdependence with each other; usually they seek out types of girls they'd wish to be themselves, and develop an admiration which is similar to romantic love to outsiders. Some girls will even open admit they're a "couple", which is most of the time code word for best friends. This is also not uncommon.

When a girl develop relationship like this, it really doesn't mean they're gay. Many of these girls do not see their female "love interest" as the same as a boy friend, and very few will actually admit they ONLY like girls. I think when you go that far, you are indeed an lesbian. Girls like Yutaka still likes men, and will accept a boyfriend if a guy shows interest. But for her developing emotions, Minami is her safe place where she can freely show affection without feeling self-conscious. In many girl-only schools around Asia, these type of relationship is quite common place (as Marimite fans know); however, great majority of them will end up being raging heterosexual by the time the graduate from high school. A few will discover they're actually gay, and stay that way.

I'm not sure what kind of girl Yutaka really is, but at this point, I am quite comfortable with her "affair" with Minami. This is just a puppy love that's somewhat common between girls in Asian societies. If you grew up in the West and adopted its homophobic tendencies, don't judge so fast. The girls are not yet and probably will never be real life Yuris. They're just very, very comfortable being with each together, that is all.

Haruhi-cola... Possibly more a parody of soft drink commercials than anything else.

Has Shirashi gone to make himself taller?

Loved the AIR references. We need more Daisuke Ono. No idea what he's actually like, but just the way he was portrayed here was brilliant. If they have a shot where he's standing at a Ramen stall shouting 'RAMEN SETTO!' that would work.

Psst. Takumi2k4... I think you mean the other guy called Tomokazu...

Although my experience with Japanese culture specifically is limited to otaku materials and common knowledge that does make a lot of sense. From my studies in political science, history and sociology this type of behavior is more common in countries that have a less open sexual society in the early years. Growing up in modern America you are exposed early and often to cultural mores and norms that do not discourage early development of relations with the opposite sex. But from a historical perspective, many cultures frowned upon this, which forced youth of that culture to seek out relationships with those of the same sex that were more acceptable to the culture. This doesn't mean that they were homosexual or that they would end up having long term romantic relationships, but people naturally seek out others, and in some cultures the youth have little choice.

I just actually thought about Kanon after that scene and realised that it kinda did make sense why none of the main female characters had boyfriends.

Well I would say Kanon is a bit different, each of the heroines has a very good reason why they would be single. However Kanon is more of an exception, when you look at other, more standard dating sim adaptations that have your laundry list of stereotypical characters.

Lots of Internet cookies to AVPlaya and Calawain for actually understanding what is going on with those sorts of relationships and explaining them. :)
Nonetheless, resign yourselves to explaining it over and over and over and....
(staples to 'wall of what should be common knowledge' next to cousin-romance and other topics)

Review of ep 20: I found myself smiling the entire episode. It was a very "Peanuts"-ish structure (lots of 4-koma strung together).
Great seeing all the girls in all their colorful yukata... and like the collision of beautiful festival imagery with the nasty reality of mosquito.

My spine shatters from cute-overload everytime Misao says anything. o.. my... god....

Love Dad's reaction to Kona threatening to follow in his and Kanata's footsteps and make "her own memories" :)

I swear they're making me happy-insane with all the money-shots of Kagami in her summer wear. The way she sits and moves is wonderfully drawn and animated.

Gave the episode a 10...... I really had nothing to complain about since even the Haruhi commercial poked fun at the commercialism: very hyper-self-referential. They also really took extra time to trout-slap the otaku this episode --- its almost like watching Don Rickles get applause for haranguing and abusing his audience.

He is listed (http://pc.webnt.jp/anime/detail0097100807.html) as co-writer of ep23, along with Machida Douko, the lead writer. This could just be crediting him with work he had done before he left, but a couple of things have made some of us think he might actually be back with KyoAni: there was a joke line a couple of eps back that repeated what was said in the announcement of his departure (about "not having reached the level" of something), and he was also listed (http://d.hatena.ne.jp/keyword/%A4%E9%A4%AD%A1%F9%A4%B9%A4%BF) as co-writer of ep10.

My own method for getting mosquitoes is to hold out your arm, wait for them to settle and start poking around for a spot, then slap. I've heard of the flex your arm thing, but have never tried it.

I have no idea who the avatar's referencing if it is even doing so. I thought he looked uncannily like Guiche from ZnT, but "blonde pretty-boys with roses" is a terribly general character form.

Ah, good point. Yeah she may look like she's in love with a girl, but in her mind she's a her prince, maybe. :) She not really gay...

It just seemed that this is a very "sexy" or at least sensual episode. I don't know about you but almost everything about Kagami is sexy in this EP. The way she posed, dressed (at least 4 different outfits), even talked. Misao's lament at the every end about how her love can never reach Kagamin feels genuinely sad, even though like everything she said it was cute (Why DOES Kagami love that Chibi'ko and not this Yaeba-chan?). The girls all looked sexy in their Yutakas, and of course we have the most intimate scene thus far. Heck, some lolicon may even find Kona in her messy tank-top "distrubing". This is what I was feeling but unable to word it... this EP is different and special.

Some yummy Kagami shots. It's the middle of the summer, and the girl wears pantyhose at home! And the way she sits on that bed... man, this girl is a woman now.

Two notes upon episode re-watch:

1) I agree with AVPlaya, Kagami definitely seems to be showing off her more womanly side lately, especially in this epsiode. She's less angry it seems, and does strike some sensual poses.

2) As for the part near the beginning where Yui keeps walking in on Kona-chan doing things aside from studying and commenting that she always seems like she's on "break," I can definitely relate. Back when I lived at home with my mother she always seemed to barge in when I was taking my uh very short breaks! Short I swear!

Good Lord, somebody hide those pictures! They may die from a case of "moe overload"! (Me :heh:)

Anyways, now that AVPlaya has mentioned it, it does seem that Kagami is aiming to really look sexy. That's how you execute fanservice right there, it ain't all about the pantyshots, or the cleavage. Those harem shows needs to take a clue from L*S in how to achieve maximum fanservice.

But yeah, those pictures are so yummy indeed.

I'm starting to feel like Soujiro everytime I see those pics... must get away...

Some yummy Kagami shots. It's the middle of the summer, and the girl wears pantyhose at home! And the way she sits on that bed... man, this girl is a woman now.

I was just thinking this when I was looking for avatar material. Much Kagamin love for me, I'd say. <3
And I agree with takumi, you don't need cleavage or pantyshots to look sexy. Most people don't seem to realize that, unfortunately.

I mean, in every ive seen so far have been problems..
SP! - lot of love-trinagles
Yamibou - bad end
Kannazuki - for some reason i didnt like XD
But Minami and Yutaka... That's just something great...
I'm also fan of pair Konachan-Kagamin... What's really weird because I'm always more for "sisters' love" .. But this is kind of.. differnet.. Ok well but Minami and Yutaka first ^-^ (Well it's also not perfect [i guess that will never be] but it's just great ^^)

You need to watch Marimite if you have not done it then.

As far Kagami and Konata are concerned, I would compare their dynamics to Joey's and Chandler's from Friends (their character chemistry was the sole reason I kept on watching the show).

Here's my Ref List for EP 20... This is from Part A, which is the part before the eye-catch. There seemed to be a lot of sarcasm in this episode... should be fun. Iku yo!

Shokukan and Kaado
The very first sketch is devoted to Kona's awesome skills at finding rare prizes in snack boxes and rare game cards. The included prizes in these snack foods are called 食玩 (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E9%A3%9F%E7%8E%A9)(Shokugan, short for "food toys"), and there's an incredible amount of variety of them in Japan. Although some snacks include prizes in every pack, most of the treasured prizes are limited edition promotional items made to boost sales. They are highly popular because they are usually very well-made for a free toy; some good ones even rival the the detail offered by PVC figurines. Like Gashapons, real otas would collect the rare ones. Same goes with collectible game cards, which in Japan there are about 10x more variety; finding the rare ones takes skill.

It's ironic that Kona's showing off her l33t skills since just recently she was found with tons of choco wafers from "神羅万象" (Shinranbanshyo) card/snack pack. It means she DIDN'T get the card she wanted and was forced to buy so much packets that she has to give the wafers away. Another thing I found reading otaku blogs is that almost everyone of them said you CANNOT shake the boxes because 1. the store owners will kick you out, and 2. You may damage the precious prize inside. It's fascinating to see L*S otas went against their patron saint. Now I'm not sure exactly which prize/card she was after (and no one in Japan knew either), which is surprising given the number of real world references in the show.

Otaku in the Media
When Kona was complaining about otaku portrayal in the media, she was refering to the sudden surge of interest in otaku culture in the mass media in the last few years. While there are specials on TV focusing on Akiba or talk shows on Otaku crime, the most popular property was of course 電車男 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Densha_otoko) (Densha Otoko), a story about a 2ch otaku's quest to GET a hottie he rescued from a drunk on a train. Another one was a best selling book called "腐女子彼女 (http://www.enterbrain.co.jp/jp/p_pickup/2006/fujoshikanojo/)" (Fujoshi Girlfriend), an excerpt of a blog (http://pentabutabu.blog35.fc2.com/) in book form written by a regular guy dating a pretty Fujoshi. It's a pretty funny read about his mis-adventure with a fully blown fujoshi who makes Gundam references when she sees fast red cars (Red ones are 3x faster) and steals his credit card so she can buy Fate/stay night game on Amazon (too embarrassed to use her own name!). They generally give good impression of otaku to the rest of the world, so I'm not sure exactly why Kona's still angry.

Katsukabe Anime Club
The two guys behind Konata while she's talking about otaku on TV was holding a copy of "涼宮ハルヒの公式 (http://www.kadokawa.co.jp/comic/bk_detail.php?pcd=200604000263)" (Suzumiya Hauri no Koushiki) Anime Guide Book. The Exploding Insects
Cultural and Anime references relating to killing insects. First Kona-jiji told Konata about the story of how the Master Swordsman, 宮本武蔵 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miyamoto_Musashi) (Miyamoto Musash), captured a fly with his chopsticks. Musashi is a legendary samurai in Japan, considered by most to be the best swordsman in history. He's won a number of famous duels and lived a long, fruitful life; even wrote a book on swordsmanship and philosophy called the "Book of Five Rings", a tome that's still studied today.

As Kona bare-handedly murdered a mosquito filled with her dad's blood, the sound she made and the flashing graphics is a reference to "北斗の拳 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fist_of_the_North_Star)" (Hotoko no Ken or Fist of the North Star). That's the sound effect when an enemy is damaged by Kenshiro's Hokuto Shinken. When Kona-jiji trapped another mosquito by flexing his arm, he was then transformed into the Great Kenshiro himself, and performed his most famous line, "お前は既に死んでいる" (You're already dead). This is due to the effect of the Hokuto Shinken, which kills its victim moments after the Shiken was performed on the poor guy by exploding them into a bloody mess. Kona-jiji though the mosquito would suffer the same fate by sqeezing harder, which is of course otaku delusion.

We don't know what game Kona was playing exactly, but some people have said it felt like Kanon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanon), which is definitely possible since it was KyoAni's last big project before L*S.

Great Kadokawa manga you better buy right now!

Sweet Fountain of Aura
The show on TV as the Chibko-sisters were watching TV was a very strange "spiritual" program called "国分太一・美輪明宏・江原啓之のオーラの泉 (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%9B%BD%E5%88%86%E5%A4%AA%E4%B8%80%E3%83%BB%E7%B E%8E%E8%BC%AA%E6%98%8E%E5%AE%8F%E3%83%BB%E6%B1%9F% E5%8E%9F%E5%95%93%E4%B9%8B%E3%81%AE%E3%82%AA%E3%83 %BC%E3%83%A9%E3%81%AE%E6%B3%89)" (Gokubun Taichi, Miwa Akihiro, Ehara Hiroyuki's Fountain of Aura). This is a basically a new age "spiritual" show about ghosts, ESP powers, and past live viewing/fortune telling. Anything relating to the spirit world can be discussed here. It's a show hosted by Gokubun Taichi of the idol group TOKIO, plus a "Preacher of Love" and a "Spiritual Counselor" who can see ghosts. Each week a guest is featured and his or her "spiritual sensitivity" is measured. It's as wacky as they come; I can totally see why KyoAni wanted to mention this show.

While shows about the unknown and the world of the spirits hosted by male idol or grade school children (I'm not kidding here) are super popular on Japanese TV, everyone knows that the only thing more popular than a Johnny's boy is FOOD. There are endless number of foody shows on TV. From food competitions (Douchi no Cooking Show, one of my favorite that has since ended), competitive eating (the big eaters are usually skinny guys or women), celebrity cooking (of uneatable food), cooking on a budget (live one month off 10,000 yen!), cooking your own catch, to comedians eating anything and everything for laughs. But just in case you didn't get enough food, there's a number of specials throughout the year about food. One of these special about Sweets ( a summer favorite) is what Yutaka wanted to watch.

Now one of a well-known (note not popular) "reporter" on the show is a fellow named 彦摩呂 (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%BD%A6%E6%91%A9%E5%91%82) (Hiko Maro), who often are the taster of the food featured on these specials. One of his famous (or rather infamous) line after eating is this line "まるでXXXの宝石箱やぁ~~!!" (It's as if it's a Jewel Box of XXX!). Most people feel this line and all his other line are pretty lame and dishonest, so even KyoAni decided to make fun of it by having him say this line in L*S (He's the dude on TV eating the cake): "まるでスイーツのハレ晴レダンスやぁ~~!!" (It's as if it's the Hare Hare Dance of Sweets!) So now you all know how lame this dude is. But the food featured on these shows are pretty sweet; it really show you how much better Japanese food/cooking is compare to the food show we have here. The Sweets especially.. you have not tasted dessert until you've tried a Mount Blanc (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%A2%E3%83%B3%E3%83%96%E3%83%A9%E3%83%B3_%28% E3%82%B1%E3%83%BC%E3%82%AD%29) cake made from fresh cream and chestnut paste...

I was going to show a photo of that creepy show but a really gorgeous Mont Blanc is better:

Just want to say that I LOVE the little prizes that come with candies and snackies. I have a whole collection of foamy-paper, detailed little trains (and station), rubber robot figures, various toys from anime I've never heard of, nice plastic puzzle pieces (can never get every puzzle piece in a series, DANG!), tons and tons of pogs (including my holographic Tiny Tunes and Pokemon ones as well), stickers - jumbo and regular sized, regular and holographic, etc. etc...

Can you tell I really load up on Korean snacks? :p

I give this episode a 10 for having the shortest Lucky Channel ever. ;)

Is it strange to buy those things for the snacks, and not for the prizes? I can't remember how many of those cards, rubber figures, and other toys that I threw away. I remember the pogs one though and played it for a while until a I realized just how dumb a game it actually is, since you ended up ruining the pogs when you hit them with a slammer.

We used the slammers as slingshot ammos instead. Those things can hurt! :p

My favorite are the ones with the snap-together parts that form little robots. Got into a fight once over those.

Many times when I'm watching anime I am a bit jealous as to the Japanese club system in their schools. Growing up in schools here in the States, there were clubs but there were very few of them, never had anything close to resembling daily activities, and few people joined them. I wish there was more active and varied clubs when I was in high school, would have given me something to do after school.

Heh, you should've done band in high school! Band seriously takes most if not all of your time, well, that is if your really that passionate about it, but even then, having done marching band for 2 years, 3 counting this year, it's exhausting, but it's fun, and while it doesn't count as a club, the practices and practicing at home does take time.

But yeah, I agree with the clubs here being crappy. I can't join a club mainly because of marching band, but even then, there is no really good club. The anime club is full of yaoi fangirls that lust over Naruto X Sasuke, so I try to stay far far away.

Actually, now that I think about it, the mosquito getting stuck does seem really plausible. I'm guessing that it will work like a balloon, or something like that. But I'm no science guy, someone should go ask Bill Nye.

Well first off I have zero talent in musical instruments, I tried it in middle school and failed horribly. Funny thing though I ended up being a band geek that wasn't in the band, I had many friends that were in the school band. My school had no anime club as far as I remember, I have been out of high school for a few years however.

I have mixed feelings about this... I often think "oh, I wish there were manga school clubs here too... I could have met many friends with similar interests when I went to school" but...

from what I have seen in anime or manga, people joining anime or manga club are heavily discriminated by other students, girls, etc just on the basis that they are member of that club.
I know it's a fact, but I can't understand why this happens...

A really hardcore japanese otaku who watches anime all day and spends loads of money in Akiba isn't different from, say, an european soccer fanatic who watches his team's official TV channel all day and spends thousands of euro to see his team playing all across Europe... but the sports fanatic is usually considered somehow better

I don't really see the difference between them... it's a total passion, a radical lifestyle which can affect social life, but in no way one is worse than the other...

About the mosquito killing method ^^
I guess the major flaw of this method is that... you usually notice the bite after the mosquito has just gone away :heh:

I had heard of that as an old urban legend.
Our local version was only about the mosquito being trapped by the muscle, but not exploding.

However, this article says that a mosquito can explode under some circustances (not related to the muscle flexing, though)

For those really interested, it's eplained under the paragraph "how mosquitoes bite":

I don't think RL club (and culture festivals. And sport festivals.) are quite as cool as those depicted in manga.

If we're going to demand manga stuff, I want school idols! And slapstick comedy! (as long as it happens to someone else.) Giant robots and swordfights are kinda cool, too, but I really don't want to risk my life that much.

I'd add "Speech and Debate" to those "all consuming school clubs" along with band as being its own social niche to some extent .... probably the closest to japanese clubs I suppose.

In general, I've been disappointed with anime clubs (both adult and high school) -- they generally focus on what I'll call the 'less subtle and less challenging' long running series :)

This is really off topic but I'll have this to day...

Yes there are a lot of clubs in Japanese H.S. Most of the student join one to meet people from other classrooms and grades (in case you haven't notice, in Japanese schools the teacher move, not the student. You can spend all day in school without leaving your classroom much). Guys mostly want to join a sports club, but some join things like literary club to meet girls. Girls join clubs to meet guys and gossip. Everyone is encouraged to join a club as to develop interest in non-academic matters, but for some class (a few class in each grade is made from "college hopefuls) they are encouraged to spend all their time studying for the college tests. Clubs are optional for HS, but mostly mandatory for Middle school.

It may sound like fun but a lot of these clubs take their activities very seriously, so your may even ended up working harder in for your club than your school work. It's not all fun and games, and quitting a club is really frown upon.

In actuality, clubs are another way of forming Japanese relationship circles. Interpersonal relationship is paramount in the adult Japanese world, so more circle you form during your youth the better chance of receiving (and giving) help as an adult, thus more chance for success. Club members became intimate like other groups, going to onsen trips together and basically stay in touch for the rest of their lives. Some people ended up being closer to their club members than to their classmates (see genshiken). There's just no need for this kind of social relationship in the West (most people don't even goto their 10 year HS reunion while the Japanese meets every year) so the emphasis on clubs are not quite the same.

In actuality, clubs are another way of forming Japanese relationship circles....Which is why I've already begun asking my tutors about clubs. I'd like to get into one as soon as possible, to have fun, yes, but mostly to form relationships with people. One of my tutors is determined to get me to join the tennis club, even though I've already told her I haven't played in four years. :heh: (It's similar to the "you can speak mangled, fragmented Japanese? SUGOI!! Come hang out with us!!")

Having played flute for a number of years, my high school band wanted me to join BADLY (they claimed I was the best flautist among all the flautists they knew of; don't know if that's true or not, but they begged me everyday to join) .... My only problem was that I was used to playing solo. I'd hate to sound selfish, but playing with SO many other people was a drag, so I never joined. I really enjoy playing with a small group of people though.

The can in her hand looks like a coca-cola parody, but I believe it should be a self-parody for the Mikuru Tea drink (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=1093814&postcount=931) sold in Akiba recently. There's even sign telling the otaku to "just buy it".

Although most people know about Coka-cola in Japan, Coke doesn't really make their money with cola. Like other beverage companies, their main products are tea, coffee, and sports drink (http://www.cocacola.co.jp/products/). Cola and other soda don't sell nearly as well.

Bonus: I don't really know which Coke CM they're trying to parody, so here's a Coke (Tea) commercial featuring, eh, similar theme The actress here, Tokiwa Takako (http://jdorama.com/artiste.110.htm), is an dorama actress famous for her, eh, attributes (got a famous nude scene to prove it). Plus 2 extra coke CM - featuring two other popular actresses.

Algae Monster of Hokkaido
When Kagamin was enjoying Misao's ice cream, she said "(It's like) Marimokkori's Eyes!". What she was referring to was how the ice cream made her so happy that her eyes looked like the funny-looking eye of Hokkaido's Mascot character, まりもっこ (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%81%BE%E3%82%8A%E3%82%82%E3%81%A3%E3%81%93%E3%8 2%8A)り (Marimokkori). Named after a special local algea, it's a cute green chara with a bulging crotch (see below). Marimokkori is a popular mascot character for Hokkaido; visitors usually brought one home along with other Hokkaido omiyage like the "White Lover" Cookies (the non-stale kind (http://www.asahi.com/english/Herald-asahi/TKY200708200060.html)).

How-to Enter ToDai with Manga
When Misao told everyone that she think she can enter Tokyo University (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_University), Japan's #1 University and one of the most difficult place to attend in the world, she go the idea by reading a manga called "ドラゴン桜 (http://e-morning.jp/manga/dragon.html)" (Dragon Sakura). The manga was then remade into a highly rated 2005 dorama (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Dragon_Zakura) starring Abe Hiroshi (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Abe_Hiroshi) and Johnny's Yamapi (Yamashita Tomohisa (http://www.jdorama.com/artiste.1299.htm)). It's basically about a loser of a lawyer who decided that he can help 5 failing students from a crummy school enter Todai with his special training. His "classes" involving mixing sports with rote memorization and ignoring school teachers for subject matter exerts. He also, of course, teachers life lesson to these delinquent kids.

When Kagami was questioning Misao, she was specifically calling her out that such teacher, classmates, environment, and training exist only in manga and TV. It was really a great reference because MANY kids DID believe they have a chance for Todai after watching the dorama. "Hey! Yamapi got in by playing catch while doing chemisty, so can I!". Kagamin is of course, the only one in the room with a real chance at Todai future. Hohoho. I personally liked the show for Abe-san; one of the great Japanese actors unknown to the West. I liked Yamapi in "Nobuta wo Produce", but he's really too Johnny's pretty for me. The show was utterly ridiculous but good acting and style saved it for me.

Abe-sama will MAKE a Todaijin out of you!

Summer Test Preparation
The reason why Konata (and everyone else) is paying attention to Summer assignment this time is because that this particular summer is special. The Summer vacation of a 3rd year HS student is spend doing special home work design to help you review the entire 1st and 2nd year of HS. This is to prepare them for the big tests in a few month. Good schools like Katsukabe would give them a review that's going to really help them do well on the tests, and anyone wanting to be in an elite University has best take advantage of it.

There's a saying: "夏休みを制する者が受験を征する" (Those who controlled their Summer vacation will conquer the test). A student wanting to enter a public college will study for 10 to 12 hours a day. Good schools will even arrange special Summer camp where the students can concentrate on studying all summer long. Still think Japanese school is all fun and games? The Hiiragi girls even said they skipped the Matsuri held by their own Jinja. Even in L*S, the pressure of the 3rd year is evident. It seemed that our little Kona is serious about going to college after all.

The Girls and their Eki
This episode finally showed us a couple of JR stations. The following are the new Holy Sites:

Konata's Home Station: 幸手駅 (Satte Eki)

The Great Lucky Star Hanabi Daikai
By now we now know exactly which city Konata and the Hiiragis live, but we were never told here Miyuki/Minami resided, aside that it's closer to Tokyo. Some of you may know this, but Japan has a special breed of otaku called the Densha-Otaku; the train fanatics. Some of them are also anime-otakus. Some of these hybrid-otas analyzed the train scenes, station location, and clues from the dialog in trying to discover which Matsuri the girls went. Basically there are two candidates, and I'll just post them both. You can be the judge.

First candidate is the famous 江戸川花火大会 (http://www.walkerplus.com/hanabi/kanto/detail/fw0471.html) (Edogawa Hanabi Daikai) held 8/4 of this year. Over 1.3 million people watched it live and over 14,000 fireworks were used last year. Video links below:

The Second candidate is somewhat famous 川崎市多摩川花火大会 (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%A4%9A%E6%91%A9%E5%B7%9D%E8%8A%B1%E7%81%AB%E5%A 4%A7%E4%BC%9A_(%E4%B8%96%E7%94%B0%E8%B0%B7%E5%8C%B A%E3%83%BB%E5%B7%9D%E5%B4%8E%E5%B8%82)) (Kawasaki City Hanabi Daikai), held on the 3rd Saturday of August. Tsukasa's Quick Quips
She made two one-liner references during the Masuri scetch:

When she was trapped by the ticket gate in the stations: "なんじゃこりゃー" (Nanja Koryaa!) It was the last word of Detective ジーパン (Jeans) in a legendary police drama "太陽にほえろ! (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%A4%AA%E9%99%BD%E3%81%AB%E3%81%BB%E3%81%88%E3%8 2%8D!)" (Taiyou ni Hoero!), which was aired from 1972 to 1986.
When Tsukasa was scratching her mosquito bites, she let out "かい~の" (Kai-no~~). This phrase is a famous gag line of a popular comedian named 間寛平 (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E9%96%93%E5%AF%9B%E5%B9%B3) (Hazama Kanpei).

She also printed on her paper fan her most favorite thing in the world: "バルサミコ酢" (Balsamic Vinegar). I'm sure KyoAni will have this out for sale any day now.

Lucky Dog
In Lucky Channel, new pretty-boy assistant Ono Daisuke made a reference to the past characters he and Imano Hiromi (Akira's seiyuu) played on the anime "AIR (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIR_%28%E3%82%B2%E3%83%BC%E3%83%A0%29)". He was the character 国崎往人 (Kunisaki Yukito) and she was the dog ポテト (Poteto).

Hiromi-chan was so cute...

The Groom's Rumba
The latest Shiraish ED again featured a song written and performed by the great Mr. White Rock. The song, "お婿ルンバ" or "Groom's Rumba" is a parody of a very popular wedding song by 70-80's idol 郷ひろみ (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E9%83%B7%E3%81%B2%E3%82%8D%E3%81%BF) (Gou Hiromi), "お嫁サンバ" or "Bride's Samba". I only knew about him because he dated Matsuda Seiko (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matsuda_Seiko) back in the 80's. You can watch the original song below (not the same one I posted before):

My goodness this is long. But it is so much fun. I'm reading about things I would never had otherwise. Now I know the exact model number of the train Konata rode on. Japanese otas are impressive indeed.

I am quite amazed as to how quickly the Japanese otaku squadrons can gather this type of information with such detail. Especially if many of them are not that familiar with general Japanese culture. If I were to assume the Japanese otaku average age was 13-24 and they are hardcore enough to frequent the types of boards and blogs that find this information, I wonder where they find the time to involve themselves in these other areas of culture enough to recognize the references. Some of them are probably more obvious then others, but others seem pretty obscure. It is quite impressive in the end.

I thought number 20 was quite an awesome episode, but i'm saying that about most of em now. I dunno why, but the inclusion of new characters really makes the programme more interesting when i thought it would just spiral off into stupid plots.

Loving the mosquito bit and the whole tea and melon part. Made me laugh when Yuki-chan's Mum forgot about herself and Konata though of something, no doubt, worrying.

Aw man, time consuming clubs indeed. Back when I was in high school, I spent more time in clubs than in my actual classes. That's what happens when you do marching band, academic decathlon, and mock trial at the same time every year...

Anyway, finally got around to watching the actual episode. Short LC this time around...but I found it quite amusing, better than several of the earlier ones. And Shiraishi's ED this time...man that guy's crazy. But I guess that's why we like watching him.

School? Work? Real Life? Splitting duties with other projects?
It is September after all.... (thinks about waiting *months* for some series episode releases)

Perhaps there were just technical or logistical obstacles... they've taken longer to do an episode on average since ep 16. They're also not the only ones subbing.... though my favorites, the EnA people seem to have taken a powder for the time being... the Guerrand folks have stepped into the breech though for the impatient.

Haha yeah I figured there would be rl reasons coming into the picture. Guerrand's up to 23 now aren't they? Well...tbh I would prefer to wait for a.f.k's subs. Quite a big(stubborn) fan of them...:p

Awesome, now that a.f.k.'s sub is out, I can catch up on what I've missed.

Great ep, I'll start by listing everything I found funny about this episode:

Nothing.

Excellent, that was a long list.

This show has pretty much completely lost any ounce of comedic momentum it had, and it didn't exactly have a great deal to begin with. But it continues to just the same old tired jokes and pointless go-nowhere conversations that were tolerable in early episodes, without being exceptionally engaging or funny, but are just inane and boring now. I generally find that only the absolute best comedies are still funny after twenty episodes, and that certainly isn't the case for LS, but in all honesty, it hasn't been exceptionally funny at all since about ep 12.

What is wrong with this show? I mean, I found Gokujou Seitokai and Karin to be a million times funnier than this, and neither of those were fantastic. This is bordering on irredeemable now. A comedy should be funny. This just simply isn't.

Wasn't it established a while ago that this is more of a otaku(of sorts) slice of life anime than a comedy and the parts that just so happened to make you laugh or even smirk were just a bonus?

Sorrow-K
2007-09-12, 02:43
Yeah, but the show should at least still be enjoyable. It was earlier on in the series... at times. It's just not anymore. I mean, I'm all for judging a show on its intentions, but if I can't find it enjoyable and/or engaging, then it's failed its first criteria as a piece of entertainment and/or art.

And I hate this idea that just because a show is aimed at certain people, it should be impervious to criticism. It's like saying Adam Sandler films are written for people who have had lobotomies, and thus no one else has the right to judge them (although I'm being harsh on Sandler here, I did find a couple of his films funny, I'm just using him as an example).

And just to ram the point home, I just watched the latest episode of Hayate no Gotoku, and I laughed more in the first twenty seconds of that than I have in the last six episodes of Lucky Star. If they incite such completely different reactions from me, surely you can see why I'd say I think one is far better than the other.

kevin13
2007-09-12, 02:48
Hmm

I remember having slightly the same reaction around this time (though I still found it very funny, just not extremely).

Don't worry it picks up again 21-23.

I was cacking myself all the way though those.

And personally, I find Lucky Star to be more consistently funny than Hayate's hit or miss episodes. On average, I laugh even more at LS than at HnG.

But hey, if LS isn't for you, it's not for you. Unfortunate, but what can you do? And just because a show isn't universally pleasing (or, more to the point, not pleasing to you) doesn't mean they're bad.
