Episode 21...
This feels like twentyfirst hour in a Jack Bauer day.....

Raw is out.
EDIT:
Skipped to LC, and wow.
Shiraishi goes ballistic! He goes crazy and completely destroys the LC Studio.
LOL.
Anyway, I'm watching the whole ep right now.

From what I heard this is an uber cute Kagamin-centric episode. <3

Haha, really great episode. And yeah, I guess you could call it another Kagami-centric episode.
The girls go visit Kyoto for their 3rd year trip!
They visit various locales, and obviously buy some stuff.
And yes, they also went to the Kyoto Animation studios! I was expecting that all the time when they were in Kyoto.
Tsukasa also gets chased by a herd of animals after she gives them cookies.
Kagami receives a letter from someone, but it turns out that it was a bust!
Also it seems to me that KyoAni is teasing the fanboys again about the Konata X Kagami pairing, just watch the end.
It was also funny when Kuroi-sensei was so ready to play that MMO they play, turns out that the server is under maintenance or something like that, so she goes to sleep with tears in her eys. :heh:
The ED has Shiraishi sing a song about the Dentist Driller or whatever he was, at the same time the video has him doing henshin's everywhere!
Finally, Ono's fans will finally get what they wanted to hear! "Ramen Setto!!"
Overall, really good episode, needs subs right now! There wasn't a lot of dialogue, but everything becomes much more better when you understand it. Do note that the order of things isn't exactly as what I posted, I remember things on the fly so yeah.
I feel for Hiyori. Everyone's been in her situation before, huh?
The confession scene was good too--especially with the build up they do.
Angry Shiraishi = God.

wow... that was a great episode...
-i guess we've all been through what hiyori experienced... thinking of a great idea but forgetting once you're ready to write it out...
-kagamin's pseudo-confession scene and the event's leading up to it were great... great animation at that scene too...
-a sad kagami is fine too...
-konata trying to comfort kagami was sweet...
-lol at shiraishi getting left by the bus... but i was expecting it since he was seated at the middle of the isle and he was the only one who would break out laughing at the guides corny jokes...
-wow... finally shiraishi has gone berserk at really went on a rampage... t`was about time... i wonder if there'll be a lucky channel next week?
-lol at tsukasa getting assaulted by deers...
-all of the hotel attendants look the same with the same orochimaru voice...
-potato and yukito(crow) doing the preview...
-ramen setto...
-with all the kagami screen time this ep i wont be surprised if it helps her in her saimoe match today...
The first half was kinda weak but the 2nd half was golden, and even Lucky Channel was worth a watch. I've been to many of those places in Kyoyo and it sort of took me back in time. Great episode!
Aw man, this episode was scarily familiar. See, I spend a few months last year in Kyoto as an exchange student, so I recognized quite a few sights from this episode. Some of these so famous anyone will recognize them, but others...
Take this shot:
http://s02.imagehost.org/1242/snapshot20070826231234.jpg
...that's no random building in the background.
http://s02.imagehost.org/1242/2006-04-06_001.jpg
It's Kyoto City Hall. As you can see the round thing isn't a clock.
It seems the crew didn't make pictures in dark though, as they would have noticed how the building is lit at night:
http://s02.imagehost.org/1242/2006-05-05_013.jpgThe next bit is much "scarier" in terms of deja-vu, because of the insane detail. Take this shot:
http://s02.imagehost.org/1242/snapshot20070826230914.jpg
(where Kagami says to Konata: "Did you really have to come to Kyoto to do this" or something similar)
http://s02.imagehost.org/1242/2006-05-05_009.jpg
It's Gamers, Kyoto Branch! Where I've been several times myself, of course :)
Apart from the very similar angle I shot the photo at, also notice how the mannequin dolls look alike... the KyoAni crew seems to have done their homework well in advance (last year), or that shop keeps dressing it up the same way :)The location is the same as in this shot too:
http://s02.imagehost.org/1242/snapshot20070826232451.jpg
http://s02.imagehost.org/1242/2006-05-05_002.jpg
...well sorta.
Btw, a bit off topic, not far from Gamers there is this store:
http://s02.imagehost.org/1242/2006-05-05_008.jpg
:heh:
I want to say as usual, very good episode!
The first part is as good as every week stuff, but what's super great is the trip at Kyoto!
Poor Kagamin, she thought the guy would confess..
SHIRAISHI YAH
Super funny ending also
Can't wait for subs ^^
Shiraishi-samaaaaa!!!! *swoon*

As expected of KyoAni, they do after all live in Kyoto themselves. But lol, I'm shocked at how they messed up the lights at the city hall, the lights must've been broken when they were surveying the area.

Marty Mac Fly was driving by and needed to go back to the future :D

Well there is also such a thing as "business hours". Plus the area of Kyoto prefecture where KyoAni is located is supposedly some distance away from the Kyoto city center, so they might not have had the opportunity (in terms of transportation) to visit in the late evening (I on the other hand, could go there by bicycle from my dormitory, it was only 4-5 km away).
Btw, as Konata seems quite the Nintendo fan (with DS & Wii), it's disappointing they didn't go and visit Nintendo headquarters [also located in Kyoto] as well :)

It really shows their Kyoto love there.. although I seriously doubt they've purposefully forgot about the lit "clock tower". Being that most of them grew up in the city, it's hard for them to miss the city hall. I'd say they've kept it that way as to focus on the attention on the silhouettes. If they HAD shown the lit tower, it would have taken the focus away from below. I'd say it's a creative license.
I've not seen the episode yet but based on the spoilers and the blog reactions, there's a billion references in this episode. I think it's less sleep for me this week as well...

I just watched the raw and just had to give it a 10! :D
Shiraishi going berserk was worth the price of admission! :heh:
MINORU SMASH!! ;)
While watching the raw I didn't pay close enough attention to know that they went to Kyoto, but after enough scenes went by, I figured it out because that's where Negi Springfield took his class in the first Negima! series! :)
I am disappointed! I was sure that Shiraishi made his move on Kagami!
Yup, I feel for you, Hiyori! :D
Who was that sitting next to the teach on the bus? rowr! :heh::cool:

I really love the Tsukasa and deers scene in this episode! It's so like her!

Well, according to the Wiki, the KyoAni studio is in the Uji area, obviously inside the Kyoto Prefecture.
With that said, I believe they went to Uji, and Kyoto City proper, and also some places that aren't that recognizable to us, the shrines and all that.
But yeah, I agree about the clock tower thing with AVPlaya. The whole build-up to that scene was perfect, I bet they didn't want the viewers to get distracted by some weird light sticking out in the center. Or, maybe it is just broken, or maybe the DeLorean really went through there. Who knows?
Shiraishi probably wouldn't touch Kagami, after all, Kagami still has the hots for Konata. I bet Shiraishi's up to something with Tsukasa, both in the anime and real life, as discussed in the previous threads. Also, do note that Tsukasa's seiyuu was Shiraishi's partner in the ED this week, with Akira's seiyuu as the evil one.

So it's another episode where the focal point is on shopping for merchandise and plugging stuff as well. Why am I not the least bit surprised. The show truly has run out of unique things to do. The self referencing ceased being clever about 12 episodes ago. Bring back the director from the first four episodes, and hopefully something in the end can be salvaged so this won't be so forgettable.

Are you sure you are watching the same show as everyone else? There were only five or six self references in the actual show itself. There were even fewer shopping and merchandise plugs.
Potato stuffed item
Kore warou toko? (Kyon's line in Haruhi ep 1)
Koizumi's CD
Konata at the shrine. (This is a 4th wall reference.)
Konata referencing the ep 17 ending
Kyoani themselves.
Above
Above
The stuffed animal at the shopping mart
The item across that Konata recommended

You are really desperate and grasping at straws, aren't you?

You are really desperate and grasping at straws, aren't you?
No not really, I'm pretty much serious. I haven't seen anything remarkable in the series in quite a while. I don't really need to grasp at straws to prove how I feel about something, I just kind of have to feel that way.
@Bayaob: And considering the cumlative effect of all these ads recently, coupled with my low tolerance for this kind of thing at the best of times, that was well over the line.
Anyway when the highlight of an episode is something that technically happens outside of it, you know you haven't enjoyed it that much.
So it's another episode where the focal point is on shopping for merchandise and plugging stuff as well.
We are definately watching the same episode.
Not.
Kaioshin Sama
2007-08-27, 02:09
We are definately(sic) watching the same episode.
Not.
Sorry, I had to do the sic, I'm not trying to be a jerk, but it is spelled definitely, but don't worry about it, a lot of people make that mistake.
More to the point, maybe I missed something without the subtitles, but the focus seemed to be on a shopping trip to Kyoto. Okay fine a school trip, but it kind of felt like it ended up the way most trips in the series do, moreso likely for me than for others.
Now instead of focusing on what I say about the episode, I'd like to hear more about what you feel about the episode, as this is the discussion about the episode, not about how people feel about how I feel about it. Let's keep this to the point from here on out please.
Also to the person who said I wrote a review of the episode and say I shouldn't have, perhaps I should rate this episode, considering I actually have only commented on this episode and not reviewed or rated it. I wasn't planning on it, but the way in which I was approached about this makes me feel it's time I gave a rating to an episode again.
I'm starting to get upset at the way people are confronting me over this. I feel I've been very courteous with people I know are outright attacking me as opposed to my comments on this episode, and I will continue to do so, but I'd appreciate it if people would be more open about the discussion of this episode and accept that not everybody is going to enjoy it as much as they do, or dislike it as much as some do. Thank You.
I'm wondering, now that Shiraishi has destroyed the Lucky Channel stage, was this the final LC ?

So far, I've tolerated :)
But if this goes on, measures will be taken. "Kaioshin-Sama's opinions about Lucky Star 21" is not the subject of discussion of this thread and as such you're all invited to bring it on PMs. If you feel that something is wrong, use the report button and explain your reasons. But please don't turn this place into a subtle battlefield. It's annoying for those who'd only wish to read about the actual episode.
Thanks.

I am more anxious about the next ep.
Kanata!!!
EDIT:
Btw Iam also a fighting game fan...I noticed this on Minoru
He looks similar Batsu from Rival schools, with that scar on his forehead. Before you say he's Bruce Shiraishi that turns to the HULK he's Batsu Shiraishi in my book.

I think konata is being kinda sweet in this ep, she alone realized kagami had sth on her mind (tsukasa, what kind of a sister are you....)
and misuzu who dyed her hair sitting besides her aunt who also dyed her hair XD
tuskasa being assulted by a pack of deers XD

What happened? Did I miss something? :eyespin:
Anyway, on topic.
First I'll start backwards.
Best. Lucky Channel. Ever. - Shiraishi going ballistic after spending two weeks in the wild and putting up with Akira-sama for over 18 weeks. LOL Amazing Ono managed to stay calm.
To sum things up for Lucky Channel:
- Table: 32,000 yen
- Background panel: 50,000 yen
- Broadcast camera: 375,000 yen
- Seeing Shiraishi going berserk: PRICELESS
And the preview for next episode was another AIR scene. And it's kinda eerie how my prediction became correct when Ono finally gave the fans what they want by ending the preview with "RAMEN SETTO!!!"
Now, on to the episode itself.
- The first 4 minutes was ok, neither attention grabbing nor overly boring.
- Minami-chan doing her "chest grabbing" thing - no matter how many times she does it, she's still moe
- Who on earth installed that spy camera in Tsukasa-chan's room? Come out so I can beat the crap out of him! :D (It can't be her father? Or maybe it's even Kona-chan??)
- Still, Tsukasa-chan managing to sleep through her alarm clock and her mom waking her up is incredibly adorable.
- Nice cameo by Patty.
- I know how Hiyorin feels, sometimes you get a great idea for a post/thread/letter/story/whatever, whenever you're taking a bath or in your dreams, and then when you get back to your desk to write it out, you can't exactly remember what it was that made you feel inspired. :upset:
Part two is basically a field-trip to Kyoto and Nara. These two cities are so gonna be flooded by otaku pilgrims for the next few weeks. :heh:
- Not sure what role Nanako-sensei assigned for Shiraishi, but looks like someone in charge of handling the garbage?
- Is it me or does that brown-haired girl sitting next to Nanako-sensei in the coach resemble Misuzu from AIR?
- Poor Tsukasa-chan, getting "gang-banged" by Nara deer for her cookies. (I'm still trying hard not to think too much, as this IS potential comiket doujin fodder. Poor Tsukasa-chan... )
- Miyuki: This is embarrassing, but I can't sleep soundly without my pillow.
- Tsukasa-chan: This is embarrassing, but I can't sleep soundly without my alarm clock.
- Kona-chan: This is embarrassing, but I can't sleep soundly without playing my NDS. ROFLMAO. :heh:
- Kona-chan using her latent Newtype (RM) powers to get her "Mega Lucky" coupon from the shrine.
- The school coach left without poor Shiraishi. This certainly puts the meaning of "Wawawa-wasuremono" in a new light. :heh:
- KAGAMIN DERE-DERE KAWAII!!!   Phew, there I've said it. Man, like Kagamin, I kinda got me hopes up for a while after she received what looked like a love letter. Just this scene alone is worth the admission fee. I felt sorry for her when she looked so devastated at lunch afterwards. :D
- Poor Nanako-sensei, don't you just hate it when after a hard day's work or school, you come back to find that your internet connection is dead?

I loved Daisuke's "Ramen Set!"
Also, is Shiraishi a tokusatsu fan or something? I can't count how many times he attempted a henshin in the ED...
Part two is basically a field-trip to Kyoto and Nara. These two cities are so gonna be flooded by otaku pilgrims for the next few weeks. :heh: This probably won't be the first time someone goes to these two cities as part of an anime-related pilgrimage. :D
As long as someone does the pilgrimage while wearing either a black "Dash Cheese" hoodie or a white "DLG: Daisy Lovers Girls" hoodie (a little nod to another title that had some bits set in Kyoto), I don't care what the L*S fans do.

Did anyone mention at all about Konata pulling a Maetel from Galaxy Express 999?
Reference to old classics FTW! :)
I figured it out because that's where Negi Springfield took his class in the first Negima! series!
Uhh, no. Many public high schools go to Kyoto on their educational field trips. Why? Because the city provides an educational experience into centuries-old Japanese culture and architecture. Furthermore, the City of Kyoto and the Kyoto City Tourist Association promotes tourism heavily and provides substantial discounts to school field trips (more tourists = more money into local economy).
On the other hand, private high schools with a large ratio of children from affluent households (meaning more "donations" from their families) get to go overseas such as Guam, Saipan, Los Angeles, Rome, etc. etc.
One thing I've notice is that this anime is special in that there are so many raw watchers; usually by the time the subs is out almost everyone has already enjoyed the show and the discussion has dried up. I usually wait until the end of the week for my ref list, but I think I will do a new strategy.
The reason I wanted to do these lists is to have people talking; asking question about the references or adding/correcting them. It seemed that when I published a huge list, people tend to not wanting to comment much on it... too much information at once? One of the great thing about L*S is the various references to get you interested parts of Japan you may not have noticed before... and I really want to keep that spirit alive here in this forum.
So here's my new strategy for the list - I'm going to publish a few item each day so that people can comment on them if they wanted to. I am also going to do so over the course of the week so there's always something new to chat about. At the end of the week, I'll combine the posts and repost them to the Cultural Ref list. I hope that'll be okay with everyone.
Aye, what kj1980 says... going to Kyoto is almost a universal field trip for all highschoolers... its like going to your State Capital except you'd stay there a few days. Going to Okinawa is pretty popular as well (especially with their spectacular sea aquarium). Calling those a reference to anything is about like saying, "look, they're using sidewalks!!! They did that in X!"
I try to wait to comment because the raw dialog can be trippy enough that I think many people draw the wrong conclusions by watching them. I've been caught flatfooted 2 or 3 times by a sketch that I thought was one thing and it turned out to be another. Also my bandwidth just kind of limits excessive raw acquisition.
It *looks* like this episode is mostly a fairly classical "trip to Kyoto" livened up by the personalities of these particular girls. I won't decide whether it suffers from "kyoani product contamination" until I see the whole episode.
My decision matrix is pretty much: will someone totally unfamiliar with a blatant insertion just laugh at the overlaying material or will it be a "wtf was that? O.o" -- it is pretty much a done deal that L*S has been trampled to some extent to leverage the 'haruhi' energy stream and I just thank the gods that Azumanga Daioh or Ichigo Masimaro wasn't caught by a similar whirlwind when they were airing. Yes, I think SHnY is the best thing since the introduction of the wheel but then I don't like chocolate in my okonomiyaki either. :)

I really enjoyed this episode, from Tsukasa's unluckiness during the whole school trip to Kyoto, to Konata's thoughtfulness in trying to cheer Kagamin up. As far as I can tell from the raw, there were hardly any self-references to the previous works except during the preview. This episode goes to show that even without any references to Kyoani's previous works, the series can still stand on its own thanks to the strength of the characters.
Would have liked to see what the rest of Yutaka and her classmates were up to during the school trip (I miss Misao's voice - she doesn't have a single line this episode!).
@kenjiharima
Why do you say that Kanata will appear in the next episode? Was there something I missed in the raw?

2007-08-27, 14:58
The fourth wall was broken at least 3-4 times in this episode.
I don't know what you all mean about Konata comforting Kagami, she seemed too involved in her Otaku buying spree to notice her, maybe I missed something...
This was a really great episode though, very well done. Plus, any episode with lots of Kagami screentime is a good one in my book. I doubt KyoAni did that for the purpose of SaiMoe, but it certainly didn't hurt Kagami's campaign.

Oh my, this episode was superb, one of the best imho!
Tsukasa really killed me, the deers rampage was priceless :D
Kona and Kagami should publish one of those kanji learner books, for those of us who have trouble trying to memorize them ^^; -> "Learning kanji has never been so much fun" :)
I'm not 100% sure but the Buddha reference with the "options" around his face was Gradius? Lol that game was broken as hell :heh:
Poor Kagamin, I feel so sorry...
maybe it's part of her "half fortune"? half fortune is getting a letter... the other half is that it's not a love letter :(
and, for different reasons, I feel sorry for Kuroi-sensei too! I really, really understand how you feel :heh:
Guerrand sub out
-edit: my bad. didnt check their main site-
aye...41nano is watching the Torrent Submissions subforum. Torrents are announced there and then later added to the Animesuki Big List 'o' Torrents.
ffs.. 64 peers and only 4k/s downloads.. even if most of them are being greedy leeches i should still be able to get faster than that... I think my ISP has taken a leaf out of the comcast book.
Great episode. Sad that there is not that many left.
I liked Tsukasa's reaction to the mention of Comiket.

Lesson well learned, you never feed food to wild deers! I have to watch this episode again because somehow, the episode just went by so fast I don't think I have caught everything (references, funny lines, etc.).
I was a bit happy that it was not a confession. Konata X Kagami FTW!

Poor Kagami. Then again, her not-boyfriend was fugly and stupid, so it's really for the best.
Hee. Akira's violence is contagious! Shiraishi's caught it!
It's nice to see Miyuki hanging out with the other three.
Minami's really worried about her chest. And poor Yutaka's bustiness has been absorbed by Yui...
Great episode.
One question:
http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/6/ls21photoju9.jpg
Is the photo covering the "half" kanji of the "half fortune" phrase?

Can someone explain the "Ramen set" thing to me please?
darksider
2007-08-27, 18:22
While I am not impressed with any of specific scenes, I find the quality in general
better than most previous episodes.
For example, the movements when Yui sits down, Tsukasa falling asleep and her elbow slipping off of the desk and scenes in the bus too. Not just Kyoto and Nara scenes.
At the same time there are minor glitches though... Not completely perfect.
And not too much of interaction is seen other than the four.
(Hiyori was good enough by herself though)
In that regard this one was slightly inferior to the ep 20.
(AAAGH! Now please show us Misao happily eating her dishes!)
Score in total 8.5, rounded to 9.
The moment Kagami said the word 'comike' Tsukasa freaked out.
It looks like the experience in ep.12 totally traumatized Tsukasa.
(And, of course she didn't notice what when Konata referred it as the 'Ariake')
What was Tsukasa dreaming? It's definetely way crazier than Potemkin thing
Patty's getting like the counterpart of Miyuki, but she goes with the utterly otaku knowledge.
Tsukasa: 'Sis, if you know, what do you call cheese in the Indian language?'
That's not the point and she's doubly wrong! lol
Konata and Tsukasa mimicking Miyuki saying 'I am embarrassed to say this, but...'
Konata: 'Maybe the Dragon Slayer weighs much as this?' (Berserk?)
Giant Pocky in a shop - not KyoAni stuff or not even anime thing but anyway.
By the way, they use Pocky not just because they're popular, but I think
they're actually easy to recognize and very easy to draw compared to most other snacks.
In a shrine Konata sees an 'ema' and says
"This one says 'Konata is my wife'"
(Anyone who wrote that, raise your hand....)
Well, Konata's brilliance doesn't work at all without Kagami!
And what an anticlimax to the Kagamin's supposed romance! as we all sort of expected, though :)
And so Kagami got totally pissed off - or maybe she is more annoyed at her own foolishness?
Anyway although she was very sensible and tried not to bother with it anymore,
that was not enough to fool Konata (and possibly Ayano, too)
Finally Kagami could finish off her bad luck with the 'seal';
good thing she's a daughter of a Shinto priest after all :)
Weeelcome to Idahooooo! (Shiraishi's even crazier than Tsukasa?)
Ok, that's all f... oh wait, there, now I realized KyoAni guys are going to use themselves as guinea pigs!
They've shown themselves in the show knowing what it was to Washinomiya Shrine in Saitama! What guys...
Is the photo covering the "half" kanji of the "half fortune" phrase?

Can someone explain the "Ramen set" thing to me please?
It's a quote by Ono Daisuke's character from AIR.
Random things I got and appreciated during the episode:
- Hiyori and the artistic hell. As in, this inspiration that comes in the least convenient times and you"ll never be able to express. Every one of us who, one day, had artistic aspirations have gone thru it.
- Girls want to have fun! I meant the whole Kyoto trip around the historic sites, etc... Something about how it was done managed to capture that feeling.
- Poor lonely Kagami. I am biased toward Konata, but the loads of Kagami-centric scenes in this ep, and those of the previous ones, are slowly tipping the balance in Kagami's side.
- Lucky Channel. It happened! Shirashi had enough with it! He snaps, wreck the whole Lucky Channel stage and the people LOVE him for that!
This episode was as delicious as a Black Forest cake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Forest_gateau), it all depends on how you enjoy it. I ate it bits by bits, knowing that it may be the last.
EDIT: 2.00am here, need to sleep.

Hahaha, loved this episode!
Poor Kagami, from her comments in earlier episode I knew she was interested in having a relationship but in this episode we see how lonely she is.
Poor Kuroi sensei, when the server's down, she has no life! ><
Ah well, seeing Tsukasa in all those awkward monents was hilarious! I loved it!

9/10 this week, good stuff as usual!
-Tsukasa's reaction to the word Comiket, terrified! The Comiket episode is definitely in my top 5 LS episodes. And I feel for her inability to wake up early to study/work. I always find it better to just stay up and finish it, it never works out right in the morning, I always turn the alarm clock off =/
-Just like Hiyori, I always think of creative things or remember stuff I have to do when I'm trying to go to sleep. I have a pen and paper next to my bed because I will forget for sure if I don't write it down.
-Trash Monitor- Shiraishi! Who gets left behind, hah!
-The "confession" scene was funny, I love Kagami's facial expressions, and her reaction to this was new, never seen her make that face before.
-And of course Kona-chan had to visit the Kyoto otaku hotspots, and it doesn't matter if you could buy them somewhere else, it's still enjoyable.
-MMORPG emergency maintenance, always happens at the worst times.
-One of the best LC's so far, Minoru going crazy all over the set was great.
-ED was more interesting that some of the past ones, although I'm going to doubt that's actually Idaho....

I wasn't commenting on why they went, I was commenting on how I recognized where they went since I saw that in Negima!... :D ;)
This episode was a good one, they actually went out and did something different.

Well Kyoto and Nara has always been the backdrop for school field trips in manga.

Oh my god.. Lucky Channel was made of win!!!
I have to say this Lucky Channel was the best one over all. I have a strange feeling that Shirashi will become one of my most loved character of all time.. I wonder what will happen to him in the next episode..
I started off feeling that this episode was somewhat mediocre. In the first half of the episode, the pacing (I sound like a broken record on this, I know) was worse than usual, and it seemed to meander without any themes or strong skits to carry up the more random pieces. It also felt a bit jarring when they crossed the line to including blatant Yui fanservice. I mean... it's not like I can complain about Yui fanservice, but it somehow also feels so wrong. Just like tuna fish and ice cream, lady-images and Lucky Star are two great flavors that don't go together. :uhoh:
The second half of the episode picked up, though. Having some continuity made the pacing itself and slow pieces much more palatable, and I enjoyed the jokes a bit more (for some reason, Shiraishi cracking up at the guide's jokes made me crack up!). Though I think the joke timing went from choppy to almost glossed over, the soothing pace made it acceptable. I did feel that there was a bit too much focus on references over character pieces, but scenes like Tsukasa's deer-trampling more than made up for it. It was chock-full of general culture and sub-culture references, too--enough so to humble me for not recognizing them.
Throughout the second half, though, and especially during Kagami's "focus time" (who didn't figure it would end that way?), I felt just like I did during the more dramatic "Hiiragi sisters drama" scene a couple of episodes back. Though Lucky Star has the potential to tug at heartstrings, it has not worked to build that rapport with the audience. The show works fine without that element, and it could also work well with it, but in my opinion their attempt to ignore it and then spring scenes like this on us just amount to failure. I just feel a bit sad when I think about how it could have been if they'd developed the show to have that dramatic impact.
So just when I was thinking it was an enjoyable, if not high on the relative scale, episode and I was making plans to come here to hopefully find some description of the references, something awesome occurred.
Count me in with every one who thinks that this Lucky Channel is one of the new seven wonders of the world! THAT. WAS. AMAZING. I have never been so satisfied in my life! I don't have words for it. I just have no earthly idea how they're going to top it now. Where do they go from here?!
And if that weren't enough, the end song kept me chuckling and the episode preview made me laugh out loud again until I lost my breath (as I imagine it would for any AIR fan).
Overall, it was good. :D
A side note: Ono's gesture at 21:11 immediately brought to mind a scene in a particular Haruhi episode (I want to say episode 0), in which Itsuki makes a similar gesture in reference to what I believe was a character in a detective drama or mystery series. Unfortunately, I don't have my Haruhi episodes with me to find the scene, nor do I remember the name of the referenced series or character. :heh: Does any one have more of a clue than me?
I don't know what you all mean about Konata comforting Kagami, she seemed too involved in her Otaku buying spree to notice her, maybe I missed something...Konata seems to know that something's up with Kagami in the last couple of scenes before the supposed confession. It's true that this probably got put on the back burner during the otaku spree, but Konata's tone during the phone conversation heavily implies to me that she took the group into the purikura booth for Kagami's benefit.
---
I knew something was different when I saw the third-years around the table after the episode title card: Miyuki was present for once. The subsequent sequences kind of shuffled her out, but I'd have been foolish not to expect that.
Kagami's dere-dere side proved ridiculously endearing again. Everyone's noted the bit with the letter; for further evidence, I cite the prominence of Konata's face in that one photo on Kagami's wall (before the cut to the purikura-enhanced fortune) as a true hallmark of their friendship. Like she'd ever put up anything that embarrassing, indeed. If there's anything KyoAni can bank upon in terms of material--leaving aside any mention of Haruhi, self-promotion, and the like--it's that viewers will eat up a dere-dere Kagami.
Kagamin for Saimoe 2007!
Shiraishi's apparent affinity for terrible puns amused me, as did his seating arrangement on the bus. This guy has continually displayed the perfect temperament for a sidekick, which made his boil-over that much better. Sure, LC was heading toward this inevitable conclusion from the very first bit of abuse that Shiraishi suffered at Akira's hands, but damned if it wasn't gratifying anyway. (Shiraishi for SaiGAR 2007?)
As much as I like Minami, and as much as I deserve to get skewered for this, I really did find her two-dimensional here. I'd be okay if she went an episode without lamenting her bust size.
---
Further thoughts from me would just end up as a rehash of Jaalin's episode summary at RC. To me, this episode is as true to form as the L*S anime gets. If Misao had said anything--anything at all--I'd probably have given it a 10.

HAHA! That's Cute, but no. Shirashai is a real person, I doubt he'd qualify, and even if did he wouldn't stand a chance against the likes of Kamina, Gai Shishioh, Master Asia and Gatts! Most of the candidates that gain entry are in a completely different league, no a completely different realm of Gar than Shirashai, and if you want my opinion, he isn't the slightest bit hot blooded. Ono would be a better candidate if he were allowed thanks to his roles in Koutetsushin Jeeg, and Kaze No Stigma. Yes, unless people were to organize behind him in a campaign he would get whomped.
:heh:
That was entirely tongue-in-cheek, but thanks for the clarification.
Guerrand has released a v2 of the episode... haven't had a chance to see the original release so not sure what they might have changed.

Also, best episode preview ever.

Some of the references in Lucky Star always fly past me but this episode had very much of those! Was made up for by an equal lot of awseomeness, though.
Lucky Channel was the best part, Shiraishi is a beast!
Tsukasa getting owned by deer was the second best. Oh, and whoever thought of something indecent, raise your hands! o/
Can someone explain a few things though?
1) When the girls failed to lift the relic, did Konata say "I guess the dragon slayer (sword) weighs about this much" or "So this is as far as our dragon-slaying goes." Both are probably referencing the net RPG she plays.
2) When Konata was looking at Shiraishi chasing the bus, who did she reference / turn into? O.o
3) What was Konata trying to make Kagami buy?

Haha! Well i was about 7/8 when i watched them.
Kagami's romantic Kyoto tour.... ya know, I almost cried for her when the climax of her mystery meeting finished. bleh.... they pulled off some wonderful animation with Kagami in that sequence.
Otherwise, it was an AzuDa-happy sort of Kyoto trip with lots of funny bits. As far as I can tell, they never actually *said* the name of the studio Konata wanted to visit - I kind of liked that.
Lots of good Kuroi-sensei moments but when she sat down to play the MMO and threw her hair back, that was about 20 points of Kuroi fanservice right there.
Poor Minami is almost neurotic the way they're portraying her obsession with her figure (bouncing idiotic Yui notwithstanding).
I actually liked both the animated L*C and the live-action bit of goofy stupidity. Actually, I liked Akira-sama VA's underlying muttering during his antics.
That student next to Kuroi looked familiar, will browse the manga.... and like my Location says, "On the whole, I'd rather be in Kyoto..."

I gave it a 10 because of my non stop laughing. My gf woke up saying whats wrong. But I found this episode to be hilarious, especially the lucky channel and the ED song.
The deer attacking Tsukasa in Nara was hilarious--my wife and I had the same experience when we were there on vacation, they really do get pretty aggressive going after cookies (you can buy a pack of deer cookies for 100 yen from stalls all over the place in Nara.) First there's just one, and then the rest start swarming like bees...they cut the antlers off almost all of them so they won't hurt the tourists, but you do see a few that haven't been caught yet like the one that took Tsukasa down.
The only exception is if you go on a day it's really crowded, then the deer get to eat so much they'll get picky--they just sniff the cookies and turn their heads away like they're too good for them... :heh:

Wow, that was a very enjoyable episode, one of the best for sure in my eyes.
Lots of fun moments, from Tsukasa getting mauled by deer to Konata's beloved DS to Kuroi-sensei being pwned by server maintenance (I know how that feels, lol). Kagami was absolutely ADORABLE in her scenes in the second half. And Shiraishi snapping at last after 21 episodes of abuse was just priceless. Top it off with Potato and Sora doing the next episode preview, and you've got one excellent episode.
It occured to me that this is the second time that they have animated Kagami in extended "high-quality" detail, the first being the Hiiragi "sisters drama" snippet. Makes me wonder if they will ever animate a spin-off OVA for Kagami in full-blown quality, like a certain submarine Captain. :D
3D-rendered bugs and cicadas? Gross overkill. Kagami done in KyoAni's highest level of animation? Bring it on.
Cheers.

"Dragon Kuroshi" is a famous sword in BERSERK. Trust me, the thing they're trying to lift is way more interesting.
2) When Konata was looking at Shiraishi chasing the bus, who did she reference / turn into? O.o
Kona turned into Maetel of Galaxy Express 999. That's one of her famous pose, looking out of the train window.
3) What was Konata trying to make Kagami buy?
It's a Kinki Area only Mucha-flavored Giant Pocky. You can buy regular Giant Pocky in your neighborhood Japanese supermarket. :)
Part I of EP21 ref list. How many in total? I have no idea. Ikuzo!
Kanji Lession - Little River Wood
When Konata was talking about how the Izumi Loli family cool down in their air-conditioned faimly room, she mentioned that the there of them looked like the kanji "小" (Shou, small). Kagamin then counted, shouldn't it be the kanji "川" (Kawa, river)? As you can see from the kanji itself, Kawa looked like three vertical strokes, which could be seen as three people lying down side by side. Kona said it's more of a Shou, meaning that while the middle stroke (jiji) is veritcal, the other, much shorter strokes are diagnal toward the middle, which is similar to two small, lilo-like HS girls sleeping on on the arm of a blue-haired middle age lolicon. Actually, Kona-chan, it's more like a "木" (Ki, tree) with his arm sticking out like that, but we all know how you really don't like kanji in general, so it's okay.
The kanji Shou, Kawa, and Ki

Quick Reference - the D: Drive in a Windows computer is usually the CD/DVD drive. Since they're not pasokon-otas, it's unlikely they have more than one HD or knows how to re-partition their C:. That means Konata is counting on the fact that her jiji would be too embarassed to check out what's in Kona's D DRIVE.... ho ho ho... But I'm probably sure that her dad DOES indeed check her pasokon and is most likely crying with joy at the amount of eroge Kona plays.
Barley Goodness
The drink Yui-nee-chan asked for instead of biru is a popular summer time drink of the Japanese (and Korean as I understand) called 麦茶 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mugicha) (Mugicha, or Barley Tea). It's made from basically roasted barley seed brewed in water. The cool thing about Barley Tea is that you can make it in cold water: just drop a Barley Tea bag in a pitcher filled with water and put it in a fridge. In a short time you'll have a plenty of Barley Tea to share with your sister and your very flat-chested love interest!
I have this exact bag of Mugicha in my pantry:

YassaiMossai - When she woke from her nodding, she mentioned the name of a famous Dance (やっさいもっさい踊り (http://www1.jiu.ac.jp/kisarazu/know-kisarazu.html), YassaiMossai Odori) performed every year during the Fireworks festival for the City of Kisarazu (木更津市)in Chiba.
Poteto! - She has a nuigurumi of "ポテト", the dog from AIR (http://anime.powerbean.jp/AIR/) on next to her pillow (Isn't she an non-ota?)
Nyamo~ - She has a nuigurumi of "にゃもー", the Lucky Star mascot on the top of her drawer

Classroom Notes
Unlike the West, the difference between each grade in a school is significant. The first years respect and obey all upper classmen, while the second year just started to lord over the first year. The 3rd year act like kings and queens and constantly pull rank on the their kouhais. As you might notice, your average Japanese student has problem getting to know a person from another class in their own grade, so it's almost impossible to know a student from another grade outside of a club setting (but even in a club, senority rankings exist).
Most Japanese schools also split the home rooms for each grade on different floors - That's why most Japanese schools has 3 or 4 floors. What this means that unless you have a good reason, you'll almost never get to visit the floor of another grade; thus Yutaka has to ask around to find 3-Nen-B-Gumi. If an lower class visit an upper class floor, he or she will be intimidated because every one of them can order the kouhai around, while the reverse is true. Konata however never got that senpai smugness in a lower-class floor because, well, eh, she looked like a 6th grader.
Senpai, come play with us.. forever and ever and ever...

This one made a small amount of sense while watching the show too because Guerrand made a quick explanation as subbers notes. Pretty clever joke on the writer's part imo.

Eh, I'm not sure, if they share all of the games they have seeing as how Kona-chan's dad handles all the storage of said games, I would think it's probably a second HD where they store any uh "special" downloads or other such files. I could be wrong however, and when I was a teenager trying to hide things on my computer from my folks I would do something a lot less obvious then dedicating an entire drive too it hah.

That sounds pretty harsh, that's one nice thing about American schools at least. I took a lot of upper level courses early so I mixed in with mostly older students in many of my classes. Although I went to a default public school, I guess if you have to take an entrance exam to a high school that the school would have a student body with more similar abilities and less of a need to put people in higher or lower levels within each grade level.

I usually get the anime and culture references right from the start, but this ep had me lost on a few. Can anyone explain these situations to me please?
1. "but narimiya-kun was a little different" What was that about? And Kagami said that is was direct?
2. "so iris entered this place?" When they went in the station Konata said this
3. "the tiny ones aound it are the options" Konata said this about a Budda statue
4. "reccomended pocky, green tea, collon" why was Konata so adament about Kagami getting the pocky or green tea or collon?
Thanks. Overall I loved the episode. The tour guide jokes were funny and Tsukasa is just too cute in this ep.

I think I know this one.
Well, it's a reference to a REALLY hard 80's game called Gradius (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gradius)
In this game, you control a spaceship.
At first, the spaceship is ultra slow, has puny firepower, but a good player (surely Kona-chan is one :D ) can get powerups, who boost your speed, your guns and so on.
One of these powerups is called "option". An "option" is basically a ghost spaceship who follows your trail and shoots when you do so, thus multiplying your firepower.
In Konata's fantasy, Budda's nose is the main spaceship the player controls, and all those round decorations around are the "options" :heh:

All I can say is...
Pooor Kagamin!!! :upset:
Even though I knew that bit wasn't going to end any other way I felt bad for her...Was also sad that poor miyuki is still stuck with the walking dictionary shtick again this episode. Also what is it with all female teachers in anime always being single...Can anyone even name a recent one that wasn't? :heh:
Oh and L*C was actually worth watching...Poor abused shiriashi. Should be interesting to see what happens next time after the fallout of his rampage. :p

"sniff" by Kuroi-sensei killed me!:D:D:D
oh me too!
Despite her little on-screen time, most of her scenes are very funny!
Plus, I like her accent ^^
Dere-dere moments of Kagami killed me... I expected some joke of that kind but, not as heavy as the one which is shown in the anime. I mean... The first thing I did when I heard that the only thing the boy wanted was the toy, I paused the video and waited 5 minutes in order to belive it!!! They are making Kagami suffer a lot!!!
Anyway, that made me think... what would have Kagami said if the boy really confessed? (We didn't see his face till the last moment because we would have understood what happenned quickly. And of course... if the boy confessed he would be handsome. But what about if he did and was... like the anime one? Would Kagami accept or refuse?
By the way, Kuroi sensei really was awesome in her final joke. I never thought that such a simple joke would make me laugh so hard... (sniff TT_TT).
However, between you and me... I didn't want anyone to confess to Kagami... X3 I think that is some of the main characters had a boyfriend (and I will borrow Konata's words) "this wouldn't be an anime".

Screw Gradius. Parodius is where it's at! :D
I remember playing the R-type games, but I could barely remember anything about them besides the wave cannons. Must not have been a memorable series for me.
As of now I'm almost positive that Kyoani has people reading this place with us calling for Shiraishi to be booted...because they made it happen. With the most GARRRRR scene of Shiraishi I've ever seen. Pure, unadulterated win. Poor guy...you just can't not empathize with this one. I daresay he'll find a way to take center stage completely by the end of all this.
Now...what's up with the whole tender Kagami sketch? I'm certainly not complaining, but it's uh...a bit weird to see that in a comedy show. XD It's pretty easy to guess that it's definitely not a confession, though. Kagami got a "half fortune" for a reason. :p
Now...I need to actually write my fanfic.

Meh...that ep was average up until the Kagami scenes near the end (*sniff*), but the Lucky Channel made it brilliant. I've been waiting for Minoru to do something like that since episode 5. plus, nice Gradius reference.
If you look carefully at the upper left side of the screen when the cam was attacked by Minoru, you can clearly see how Akira-sama and Ono Daisuke are absolutely scared X3. And the most strange thing is that Minoru starts to run after Akira in order to "attack" her when he is talking about something related to "30 years old". Could this be some kind of clue to know the true age of Akira-sama? I am only guessing, what do you think?
Anh_Minh
2007-08-30, 05:57
IIRC, Akira's VA is 32, Shiraishi's 28 or 29...
Then again, Akira (the character) should still be a minor, since her parents get the money.
Finally watched the episode.
It seemed just plain awesome to me.
Kagami looked really cute. Also I felt pretty sorry for her when she met that guy. The expression on her face was as completely shocked and she had square eyes.
The scene with Tsukasa feeding deer was pretty funny to think of it coming across a heard of deer might result in heavy injuries, broken bones etc.
Also a few words about inspiration. That was much to the point.
Just recently I was thinking of a concept for a new wallie. The idea struck me at night and I did take a sheet of paper to put notes. Perharps it happens so that at daytime you're busy with other stuff and dont have time to think so inspiration comes at night when nobody bothers you. See more info in Shuffle! image thread.

I don't think she would...she was simply not expecting Shiraishi to survive, let alone bringing back the Fuji spring water as ordered. I'm sure she'd feel at least partly sorry that she AND the directors tried to pull this on him...not before Shiraishi went batshit crazy, of course (though I'm quite sure the directors and studio workers are all "oh crap" when he came back). She doesn't seem to be able to realize what she's doing until his outburst, either through sore underestimation of Shiraishi or dumb egoism in herself.
The remaining question: who started the idea to send Shiraishi to hangmanville Fuji forest? If it's Akira, how many people did she sleep with to make that happen?

No, no, I must be wrong, she is probably still talking about Ginga Tetsuo 999..but the guy name was Tetsuro. Maybe was a character named (something)te on that series that I dont remember. Or maybe I misunderstand the fansubs.
Still It makes me laugh. Most probably they are talking about some series I dont know or some obscure cultural reference. Maybe AvPlaya can explain to me.

in Guerrand subs Konata says: you've gotta call out "***tel !" (the scrambled name is Maetel of course ^^ )
Konata isn't calling Minoru names... she just tells Minoru to do as Tetsuro usually did in such circumstances... "Maetel !!!" :D

...were those things deers? im not sure lol....As someone mentioned before, those are the little deer that live in the park in Nara (an ancient capital of Japan), near the big Todaiji temple. You buy sembei (big Japanese crackers) to feed them. They are actually pretty enjoyable to be around, despite the fact that they help give the park a bit of the ambience of a run-down city zoo, by trampling the grass and leaving deposits around everywhere. The deer are supposedly sacred messengers of the Shinto gods...here in the midst of several Buddhist temples. Here (http://japundit.com/archives/2006/02/07/1951/) is someone's travel diary about them. And here is a photo:

I've heard that this was a reference to the movie "Gamera III", Iris being the monster who fought Gamera. I haven't seen the movie, so if someone can set us straight on that... that would be most helpful. :)

Why was that 'comedian' on the bus sat on his own in the middle of the aisle?
While watching the raw I didn't pay close enough attention to know that they went to Kyoto, but after enough scenes went by, I figured it out because that's where Negi Springfield took his class in the first Negima! series! :)

I believe partly to avoid free promotion or the possibility of being sued or whatnot, and at least partly out of tradition/humour.

the D: Drive in a Windows computer is usually the CD/DVD drive.
I should think them savvy enough to have more than one drive/partition, they may even have a computer with seperate app and data drives which is popular with the more 'extreme' flavour of PC. THe second volume would default to d:, pushing any removable media up to a higher letter. And her dad known exaclt what eroge she has since they share games and, until she turned 18, he even bought them for her.

Makes me wonder now if I should keep my Guerrand files or replace them with a.f.k. to maintain consistency with the first 20 eps. Guerrand has improved their subbing quality a lot in these last episodes. And I've always preferred more translator notes and less generalization.
Back for the first 15-20 eps, a.f.k. was the dominant group because of their consistency. And I accepted that they subbed for a "general audience." This forum has had all these discussions already earlier in the series. But now that a worthy rival group has surfaced, I can't decide. ^^;

Personally, I feel like this episode was more centered in how Konata is actually sensitive to how Kagami feels, which many viewers can possibly be oblivious to (other than the Haruhi concert scene, which shows how much Kagami cares for Konata). Of course, I could be biased because I am a huge KagamixKonata fan. :heh:
But I think while the entire love letter scene had a lot of built up and in short-term, it did end up looking like a gag by KyoAni, I do however sincerely believe the entire scene was more a built up to the purikura in the end. :p
Hi All!
One wonders why didn't the quad enter KyotoAnimation while they were there? Why didn't KA offer us a "sneak peek" of their artists at work as a Powerpuff Girls Z episode had done? Is it because it's forbidden for amineians to trespass the spring of their creation? (like that old old SF movie "She"?) Would they go "pouf" in a cloud of pixie dust if they attempted to glimpse the face of God? Hmm.... :)
