Summary, but again, clearly not reliable at 100%
Episode 9: Summary and screencaps (http://animehistory.wordpress.com/2007/08/30/higurashi-no-naku-koro-ni-kai-episode-9-minagoroshi-hen-4-koushou/)
It will be corrected with subs soon enough.
Very Very powerful episode again. No melodrama, nothing.
Simply, determination of friends, and very well built progression of it. I believe DEEN was even able to create a huge mood about Satoko's case, even more powerful than tatarigoroshi-hen. Dunno if it was because of fanboyism, but i was pretty moved how Keiichi was rallying people to smash the petty stoicism of the agency staff.
Truely, the battle is set, and i'm reserving the 10 for the next episode, which will be the full extent of EPICNESS, especiall from KOOL K.
EDIT : screencaps are available now.
Another great epsiode. It's good to see that they actually spaced this segment (of the story) out, I was worried that it would've been rushed. Nice work throughout, and the reception lady is a beauty.
Only thing too bad they had to cut short Keiichi's speech, in which Kameda surrendered too fast. I was hoping they would save more about the Tsudere and the 2D vs 3D talk.
Yeah, it seems like they really wanted to make this episode stick out.
Rika said she was going to give up if this world doesn't work out, eh? Uh oh!
Eh. I wasn't a fan of the episode at all. They're working together and everybody wants to save Satoko. I get it. I really didn't need 20 straight minutes of Keiichi giving a generic "if we combine our powers, we can create Voltron and save Satoko."
Caps of the endless line of speech-giving heads.

Kameda looks freaking creepy
Not meaningless at all.
It's not exactly relevant to what's going on at the moment except as an exacerbating factor, but them knowing about it doesn't add or change anything at all, hence, meaningless. I'll accept that it's arguable though, so *shrug*
Satoko's behavior in Tatarigoroshi-hen can be explained by the "disease" they talked about this epsiode...
And of course, that's only the beginning.

First half of the episode was a little boring... gathering everyone up to save Satoko, but the rest of the episode was good (Hauu hauu~ ftw). Looks like Satoko had another breakdown like in season 1, and it looks like Rika was losing some of her hope but then decided to gain some more confidence... and again Keiichi proves that he pwns in this arc.
Can't wait for subs.

Not relevant to what's going on at the moment? It's reason she just had a break down in class a few minutes before.
And don't you think that a disease that makes one prone to hallucinations and minor psychotic episodes is a huge peice of information in a seires that has a ton of people that have been shown to be prone to hallucinations and psychotic episodes?

My 2 cents :
I believe the fact "nothing new happened" in this episode is somewhat what the episode SHOULD HAVE shown from the very start.
As the situation was set last week, they obviously CAN'T resolve the matter out of the blue, or with a frigging deus ex machina. Instead, they sticked on the game script: Keiichi and everyone else, trying to save satoko, wave by wave.
This is a very big point of it, since it shows how determined they are, and how it is realist, in a sense that, it isn't a "i found the ultimate answer!" from nowhere etc.
Keiichi's abilities were also greatly depicted, and they are, much like their interventions, by wave, and its effectiveness grows in a crescendo manner.
you see in this episode it isn't only a fight against dumb protocol and stoicism, and another factor is in the account as well. And meanwhile, the episode stresses on the URGENCY of the matter, as Satoko is almost reaching the "NO TURNING BACK" breakdown point she has get through in Tatarigoroshi-hen. (wich make me hate teppei even more)
If you add that keiichi knows about Satoko's issue, it gives them more reason to beat the crap out of the child agency indifferent stance, as Satoko's situation is beyond "cautious". She is literaly in danger, that is.
and finally, but not the least: Rika's resolution. it is not hope, it is not despair or anything reckless. It is pure fighting spirit.
The whole episode is extremely meaningful (at least to me), and set the situation, character development and plot, despite the lack of "actions". (though i don't see that as a problem)
It's important to see the difficulty in overturning the issue. Otherwise you would say "if it was so simple then why didn't they do that in Tatarigoroshi?" Yeah, it's kind of boring with not much development but it's necessary. You'll appreciate it more when we're past it.

Preview of EP10 is up, on both usual links (oyashirosama.com (http://www.oyashirosama.com/web/kai/onair/index.htm) or the follow one)
http://www.animate.tv/special/higurasi_yokoku.php
menu of next week: MOAR K, a tsundere and a MILF.
Next epsiode is worth looking forward to (from the preview), after all we get to see:
Satoko riding on the train alone, Kimiyoshi's farmland, and Shion without uniform

i was wondering if wasn't completely mad... i guess i wasn't :heh: (as i could heard Satoko on the train (Densha? i was WTF? :twitch:), and the uniform... let's not mention about the weird sonozaki juice, with nipa nipa... )
the previews never cease to amaze me in randomness XD
Rika notices that as the closest one to Satoko, she should actually lend her hand in saving the girl.
About time. Sure was weird seeing Rena and Keiichi tag-teaming in their persuasive effort and Rika saying nothing to Satoko during the classroom scene. I would expect that from the usual depressed Rika, but not the one who declared she did not want to give up last episode.
There were some parts I couldn't understand, so I'm waiting for subs.
Wow.
Great episode, though the pace was a little slower, it progressed at a good rate. We can feel the stress and determination of everyone to help Satoko break out of her turmoil... I can feel next week is going to be huge.

While not an episode that hit you hard and pushed through to a conclusion it was a useful episode. Just giving us how difficult the entire situation surrounding Satoko is.
Besides just having that jerk Teppei holding Satoshi's room hostage we've got a ton of difficult problems. Trying to not be taken out by the Sonozaki family will be something that has to be dealt with. The adult's hatred towards Satoko could become something dangerous. It's the children and a select few adults who can get through that prejudice to try and help Satoko.
Keiichi was completely top notch this episode. Really showing his stuff in going in and getting more and more support. Getting to see his power of pulling people together and putting them into a force. He's not nearly done yet and even with the danger of the Sonozaki family looming he won't stand down.
Another big thing was Rika figuring out she has to help as well. Can't simply rely on Keiichi and the others to solve this for her. While it's been dangerous over and over with her hopes being crushed she must fight. There isn't a chance for victory if you don't go all out and put your heart at risk. What does worry me is that she would give up if this all failed.
Not the most exciting of episodes but it seems to me it's very much necessary and similar epsiodes explaining more in depth the characters' motivation and the difficulties they faced was what was lacking in the first season.
So after a certain point Satoko starts to see her uncle in everyone who resembles him a little? I guess this could explain why she claimed she had seen him in Tataigoroshi-hen after he had "died". Though I still like the scenario of K1 switching worlds somehow and ending up in a world where Teppei was still alive.

This episode clears up many things, I was really wondering what hold Teppei had on Satoko to keep her from escaping. Now it makes sense.
Man I"m glad I don't live in a village where the social services people are so....inert. My god, a blind retarded monkey could tell that Satoko is being abused and is suffering from intense psychological trauma.
Screw social services, I say we give a machette to Keiichi and Shion and let them fix things the old fashioned way!

Very greate episode. Im looking forward to the next episodes. :)
Canīt wait for the next one.
Rena's attitude is certainly changing quickly, I'm glad she's determined to resist her fate once again. The situation is annoyingly complicated, I know that it can't be solved easily, but seeing that creep of an uncle makes me wish they'd just end it like Keiichi did last time. I'm very much looking forward to seeing how they'll try to solve the whole thing, and in what degree they'll be successful.
Rika's comment about giving up things don't work out in this one makes me worry about the future, and adds extra tension and excitement on my part.
An excellent episode for showing some touching friendship moments, and a return of a character I didn't expect to see again. K1 showed some more of the side we all love, an excellent episode, as always.
So Rika decided finally to make "one more try" Is she getting addicted? haha.
Still, I'm suprised she has such resolve after witnessing the rare event of Satoko's uncle coming home in an otherwise perfect world. Before that happened she was preparing herself to fight whatever is killing her and the entire village. But now it seems all effort is being spent on saving a friend from succumbing to madness, just like before.
By the direction this chapter is going it seems they might save Satoko, but be unable to defend themselves from the real threat that will kill them all.
Omfgbbqwtf

Man.. It seems like the situation will be pretty desperate. It will be up to Shion and Mion to really save the day in the end, if they manage to save Satoko.
Thanks to the lack of preview, I can only hope that next episode will be a shocking one.
This was one of my favorite Higurashi episodes, if not my favorite. I just love those episodes where the producers take their time to slowly build up the upcoming events. The foreshadowing when it is subtle, when we see that it is composed of the slow yet steady efforts of every character. The resolution and knowledge they gain from past episodes (showing real story continuity and character growth). Coupled with very good art and decent animation, I fail to see why people* are saying that this was a boring yet necessary episode. This is art**!

So Rika decided finally to make "one more try" Is she getting addicted? haha.
this part should be linked to that poem regarding that frog who climb :P.
That was one hell of a episode, especially with the use of the musical score --- i''ve been very impressed with Kawai Kenji's work for Kai, especially with the tracks that appeared in this episode. Worked perfectly with the emotional level of this episode, need third soundtrack release now.
Also, for a second there at the end, i thought they'd go with the plan of 'because of Satoko's illness, we can pretend Keiichi is Satoshi, and make her admit the truth'. What the hell was i thinking?
Klashikari

I agree that Kawai Kenji scores much better in Kai with these new Tracks.
I hope he will be able to pull out some true "amusement" tracks and the like. (I do miss a lot "Digital Network" and probvably the "action" like C-Examination and Fearlessness)
ho well, We will see how it will be in Matsuribayashi ^^

Funny that I'm not the only one who noticed those guys in Angel Mort. :P
By the direction this chapter is going it seems they might save Satoko, but be unable to defend themselves from the real threat that will kill them all.
Rika actually didn't forgot about "her issues". It's like she said, "Even if I die, I'll save satoko"... She wants everybody to be happy, even if she can't save her. And she doesn't really know that if she dies everyone else dies...
And I believe Satoko's illness is far from meaningless... Since you can get this together with K1 fear from dangerous things inside food, a childhood fear... For Shion I can't really think of anything XD'
And and and... Was I the only one who cried at the end?

Great episode. I think people that are criticizing this episode for lack of plot movement have missed a couple of things, one of which is the underlying theme of defeating fate through unity which I think is going to be very important later on. The other is that, you just can't rush these sort of things. It's a complex situation that can't be resolved with a simple action. A simple action (killing Teppei) was already attempted in a past arc, and we saw quite clearly in Tatarigoroshi-hen that is simply does not work.
Slow, or not, it's still dramatic, IMO. Higurashi really is in the top tier as far as execution of drama is concerned, particularly this second season. There's hardly anything that's forced or over-the-top, and the storytelling is that good that pretty much every dramatic plot point is either absorbing and/or moving.
This just continues to be one of the (if not, the) best anime of the year, IMO.

Great episode. Whoever says this episode lacks plot movement should watch it again.
But I didn't really understand what is Satako's illness...
They way Satoko's illness is described makes me think of all the instances in the past where members of the club went insane. Don't you think so? Rika said basically they feel paranoid and can't shake that feeling...I'd say that definitely describes the way Keiichi, Rena, and Shion have acted in past arcs. Satoshi too, I think.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that the town sees the Houjous as cursed. I know the town hates them because of the Dam War issue, but I wonder if Satoko's illness has some part in it. Crazy!Shion said the same thing during that ladder-shaking scene...that Satoko was a cursed child who would never have peace. But how could she have known during that arc that Satoko was sick with that weird disease?

The Houjou are considered cursed, as the houjou couple died in an accident during the watanagashi, in 1980. Also, Houjou Tamae was killed in 1982, while satoshi disappeared. That make 4 victimes, among the 4 incidents. this is the reason they are believed cursed, especially they are traitors (and since oyashiro-sama is known to be wrathful against enemies and betrayers, you know the deal...)
as for Shion, she just go mad, and mixed her jealousy and grudge (since satoko was a "leech" for Satoshi) with the common belief.
So what TIPS go with this episode?

So what TIPS go with this episode?
I'm not positive, but I think Repression and the Notebook, No Back-Up, The Nuisance and Her Return to School, and The Conduct of Being a Public Official.
Anyway, lots of progression in this episode, but still excellent.
The Houjou are considered cursed, as the houjou couple died in an accident during the watanagashi, in 1980. Also, Houjou Tamae was killed in 1982, while satoshi disappeared. That make 4 victimes, among the 4 incidents. .
Satoko can also be given credit for the deaths of Rika's parents since they took her in and sheltered her over the objection of oba-san.
Hmm the episode was excellent and I'm happy that they have decided to run this arc now. Anyway once this arc finishes I bet were going to have to wait a few episodes before they go to the "finishing point" of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni in general. Though if they did a filler episode based on the Hirukowashi-hen. That episode would be a great "comical relief" episode for Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai.
Great episode. Whoever says this episode lacks plot movement should watch it again.
But I didn't really understand what is Satako's illness...
From Rika's explaination of the small dot on the wall. We could interpret it as a fly or a cockroach. Now if you apply this to Satoko's case of her Uncle being abusive to her. When she sees a midlde aged man, she would interpret that middle aged man as her abusive Uncle. That's the "disease" Satoko has. In my opinion that disease might have started after her parents died and the event were her brother Satoshi "disappeared".
Nah, her disease is clearly what's caused all the madness incidents in previous chapters. Otherwise known as Oyashiro-sama's curse? Irie spoke of "level three" before. So basically level one would be no symptoms, level two would still be not-so-disastrous, level three can be suppressed with the daily shots, and level four means you're completely nuts and prone to commit suicide by clawing your throat out.
Or something like that.
Probably all in Hinamizawa carry the disease, but it's only triggered/worsened by natural mental unstability. And it's the only reason I can think of for why the town is getting purged.
Rika exaplained the disease the way she did probably because Keiichi would have a hard time believing the truth, and it's not relevant for saving Satoko from her current predicament.
Satoko can also be given credit for the deaths of Rika's parents since they took her in and sheltered her over the objection of oba-san.
Althought Satoko's parents died in 2nd year and Rika's parents died in the 3rd, Satoko and Satoshi was living with their uncle and aunt until their aunt died in the 4th year and Satoshi disappeared. It was until then that Satoko moved out of her house and stayed at Rika's place.
As for Rika's father, we know that he was a pacifist and was merely in a neutral stance about the dam war. His version of "Oyashiro-sama's Curse" is that he did not support the anti-dam effort, not becuase he was against it or helping the Honjou
So basically Satoko has nothing to do with Rika's parents dying.

Never before that I felt like I did when I watched this episode. This episode really delivered the emotion it was portraying. For those people who just skimmed this episode, I tell you that you're missing a lot.
Finally got to see the episode after internet died for a whole week.
The story didn't progress as much as I thought it would. On the other hand, they did an excellent job portraying Keiichi's charisma to bring together such a large group of people to fight for one single cause.
It's only getting started. The next episode will sure be one to look forward to, as everyone, and I mean everyone will join the battle to saving Satoko.
Oh, and I'm sure I wasn't the only one who exploded in laughters when the otakus in Angel Mort began to chant "E-rin! E-rin!" :D

L5 is tearing your throat out territory, I believe. L3 is fits of explosive emotional distress and/or delusion, such as with Satoko at various stages of Tatarigoroshi-hen.
Or something like that.

It reminded me of the final, final arc.

Even though the 10th episode already aired, I'm extremely curious as to how people die this chapter. Which I'm extremely certain will happen.

No doubt Satoko's uncle is at the top of the list of guys I'd like to see suffering in a pit of burning death. Maybe only second to the person/person's behind Rika's eternal cycle of death and suffering.
Huff, I'm lagging behind about a two-week delay due to following the subs.
Well, the wait was worth since the episode was so dramatically touching and Rika once again puts into practice an important lesson she learned from the other worlds.
Unity is the key to break through fate. For everyone to contribute their strength and weaknesses, for everyone to share their joy and sorrow, and above all for everyone to truly care upon extending their hands selflessly to others that need them. And for those others to acknowledge that they're in trouble and pain and want to cry out help to others.
That pretty sums much up why everyone loves Satoko and want to rescue her.
Keiichi gathered his well thought-up choices of Hinamizawa troops, but I hope that Oni-baba not chooses to bring her tazer.
You know that Sonozaki -s are armed up with tazers, right?
