Anyone know anything about this show? All I've seen are a few screenshots and strangely, I find myself intrigued by the ugly art. :p It almost looks like GTO's art. I don't have a clue what it's about but I wish someone would sub an episode so I can see it. :)

Heh. From what I understand the story is basically GTO with a female lead: a female yakuza becoming a teacher.

If you have heard of the drama, anime, and manga 'GTO' you may think the plot of Gokusen sounds a little familiar. But believe me, Gokusen has enough wit and charm and humor to make it a great series in its own right, despite the obvious comparisons to GTO.
It is the story of young high school teacher YAMAGUCHI Kumiko. At the beginning of the series, she is 23 years old, and fresh out of school. She has just accepted her first real teaching position as a math instructor at an all-boys high school. Kumiko is very cute in an awkward, quirky way. Her clothing is unfashionable, and she wears her long hair in two ponytails that make her look younger than she is. Her glasses add to the geeky effect. Her attitude is optimistic and almost naive. She wants to be a great teacher, and she believes in her students.

Kumiko's first class does not share in her dorky cheerfulness and optimism. They are a class of juvenile deliquents with multicolored hair, sloppy uniforms, and rough attitudes. They are lead by SAWADA Shin, their class leader who has a habit of being lazy in class. In the drama, her class is 3rd year, class D. The boys in 3-D are not thrilled to have such a lame looking teacher like Yamaguchi-sensei, so of course they try to bully her and force her to quit. Their attempts do not get them far.

What the class of 3-D does not know is that YAMAGUCHI Kumiko is a lot tougher than she looks. In fact, she has a secret life outside of the classroom that she goes to great pains to conceal from her students and coworkers. Kumiko is not your average shy geek. She is, in fact, the 4th generation heir to an infamous and powerful Tokyo Yakuza group! 7 years ago, Kumiko's parents passed away, and Kumiko was sent to live with her grandfather, the leader of the Yakuza group. Living with them has shaped Kumiko's personality in strange ways. When flustered or angry, she will switch from normal speech patterns, to the rough, crude slang speech of the Yakuza. She is also an excellent fighter, and can easily defeat a group of attackers.
With a background like that, why become a teacher? Well, Kumiko's parents had left the Yakuza family, and were trying to go straight. Her father had wanted to become a teacher. When they passed away, Kumiko decided to follow her father's dream. Her Yakuza family and friends support her in her decision and do what they can (in their own warped way) to help her out.

The series focuses on Kumiko's attempts at earning the trust and respect of her students and helping them become better people, beating up badguys, imparting life lessons (through inspirational speeches ^_^;) and occasionally teaching math. And through all this, she must keep her unusual background a secret. If the school were to find out, she would be fired. There is, of course, a little romance going on, as Kumiko falls for someone very unsuitable for her, and a few people also fall for her.

Gokusen has action, mystery, comedy, and some romance, and is a lot of fun to watch! I really hope they make an anime of this too...

Walküre, thank you a lot for that description. It didn't seem too spoiler packed, more like a summary. I agree it sounds a lot like GTO with some twists, but I can hardly complain as I think GTO is the best anime I've ever seen, and have been desperately seeking shows along the lines of it for years to no avail.

complich8, you better hope I never see you in real life for fear of getting a big, sloppy, wet kiss planted on you. :p

Forgot to add, sorry for making a double topic for this anime, I forgot to do a search for it, so if a mod wants to merge, go ahead. :)

And I really really really wish I could connect to the tracker for this. There seems to be some problem, I've been trying to connect for almost an hour now and no dice. I'm sooo beaing teased :p

gotwoot's tracker seems to have probs, I'm not sure what exactly ...
bonkers posted a new torrent with some other tracker. I'm not sure what's up with it, but it should connect fine. torrent is mirrored at http://www.gotwoot.net/torrents/[AonE]Gokusen_-_01_[0A63698E].avi.torrent

if all else fails, it should be on some of the bots in aone main... but I'm seeing this torrent working fine.

The series is great btw. Just watched ep 1. Definitely funny, definitely a little strange in the art department, but very watchable. Except for the damned irritating op song. :p

I didnt really expect too much from it since its just the first ep but i was entertained. It's really too early to tell, but for now the premise and style seems to be different from GTO, and I'm wondering how far they're gonna take the sitatuation w/ her secret.

I just saw the first episode and I was very impressed with this show. It is totally different from GTO in mood despite the obvious comparisons.

I also thought that AonE did an awesome job subbing it. I was particularly impressed that they translated all of the graffitti and yakuza slang. That must have been rough to get right.

A very entertaining show this is. Of course thats to be expected when your following a winning formula such as GTO, just change a few things here and there and bingo Gokusen is born. But then again animes arent really that original anyways. They borrow so much from each other.

I guess if it ain't broke don't fix it right?

Oh yeah I thought the dog sucked as well.

that dog rocks! one of the coolest anime dogs of ALL TIME!!! mostly because I'm not sure if he's actually talking or just thinking to himself ..... but either way he's a badass. Also the fact that he's like .... clothed. And could take just about any normal person in a fistfight... regardless of the fact that he doesn't have fists :p

I dunno, I think he's the comic relief to make up for the fact that onizuka-girl isn't busy ogling hot female students and acting like a pervert. It fills the comic relief niche.

Some people just are into the anime for art more than others. The quality of art does matter for a lot of people and im sure a lot of people got into anime cuz of the style. Trying to put down ppl cuz they dont like the art is ridiculous.

NoSanninWa
2004-01-22, 17:40
The quality of the art in Gokusen is first rate. It is simply a different style. Art quality is very important to me and that is one of the things I like about this show. The problem is that many people don't like the style to be different from what they expect regardless of its quality. You're right though that it is wrong to put people down because they don't like it. Everyone's taste differs.

stpehen
2004-01-22, 17:41
The art is josei (women's) style, which is known for being extremely simple and unadorned, unlike the shonen style, which uses flashy art to distract denser readers' attention away from the poorly-written story (zing!). This means that the focus of the manga remains strictly on the plot. Josei typically requires a mature reader, since there is no art to speak of that will occupy the reader's aesthetic sense, but as far as human relationship stories go, there really is no style that does it better.

This is the basis for the art style in the Gokusen anime, and most likely the major reason why most people think the art "sucks."

Prince of Chronics

The art is a mixed bag. Those lips are artistic blemishes--no other way to look at it.

I just saw the first episode. It's a mixed bag, and above average really. It's light and stupid, funny enough. The first episode is a gimmick and full of theme problems. I'm not sure what they want this series to be. I've never seen GTO but I've heard of it. Someone tell me if it's licensed.

Gokusen is worth looking into. I'll keep watching.

I wasn't on cutting on people for not liking the different art. I don't condemn people for their tastes and opinions. :) I was just baffled that there are so many haters out there everytime a show comes along and looks different (recent examples: Gilgamesh, Hundred Stories, Narutaru) when yet even more complain about all the cliches on a daily basis. You're free to dismiss a show because you think the art is ugly or unappealing, hell I did just that for Galaxy Railways. I just wasn't my cup o tea. :)

I'm kind of up in the air about the dog right now. I was thinking about it, and I'm not sure if other people in the show can hear him talk. Anyone have a guess? I think he might be a character like Stewy from Family guy where he talks and thinks to himself and everyone else just reacts to him in general. I think he functions well enough as the narrator though, as long as they don't try to overuse him as cheap comedy relief. Naw'mean? :p

Prince of Chronics
2004-01-23, 00:35
the Stewie comparison I think is the best explanation yet! I was thinking about it and I now think that is the best way to describe the dog's character... although... Stewie was a bit more funnier... :heh:

Anyway, the drooling legions will have to go elsewhere this winter for their kicks - Gokusen is based on a josei manga as was mentioned and does indeed have plenty of actual story to get through.
I wish people would leave the dog alone too. When a character is added to the cast of an anime adaptation it's because there was a real need in the storytelling.

Here's one way to explain the existence of the dog: in the manga a lot of things are "overheard" by the reader but not Yankumi. The story is not really a multi-perspective or multi-thread though; Yankumi is the only "main character." In the anime the dog is around to "snoop" and overhear these same things.

Along with the mafia thing already mentioned, it's not like a high school student/ teacher romance is that rare in anime. First one that popped in my head was Sakura's parents in "Card Captor Sakura".. err and that really gross 4th grader and homeroom teacher thing. :)

I don't get all this about Yankumi going after the schoolboys. The other teacher is there to make a joke out of that kind of thing, she doesn't do much else. Yankumi doesn't seem very amused by this, even if she is adult enough not to be shocked by it. High school boys don't seem to float her boat.

What about the scene in ep. 1 where Yankumi and Shinohara the lawyer are walking to his car? Shinohara does one of the twinky-smile thing and then Yankumi does the "OMG my head is gonna fall off" thing - here is evidence: (http://server5.uploadit.org/files/babbito2k-Shinohara.sensei.jpg).

This is a standard convention indicating love interest, as most people know. Even in a comedy series it still means the same thing - Yankumi already has someone she likes.

Did anyone think that 2 of the students looked like Beavis and Butthead!?? I did.

One of my first thoughts...Where did I see those two wierd fellows before. I'm glad they aren't...Let Lord Cornholio Rest In Peace.

I too disliked the dog at first, but he's grown on me as the narrator/chorus for the show. Wierd decision on the anime producer's part, but it doesn't detract from my utter enjoyment of this show.

I like to watch each episode paired with the Marie-sama show as to get a great juxtaposition between shonen and shoujo takes of highschool drama ;)

Gokusen is based on a josei (women's) manga, as was mentioned a couple times in the thread. I don't consider the anime to be a shounen title.

It's also a standard convention in romantic stories for the main couple to dislike or even hate each other in the beginning.

You know what the dog reminds me of? All those Hanna-Barbera cartoons that had a dog sidekick in them like Snaggletooth, Astro, and that really annoying one from the first Superfriends series! He's a perfect carcerature of any of those annoying comic reliefs that's shown all the time on Boomerang.

In fact, I wouldn't put it past the manga artist if she/he wasn't influenced by all those cartoons.

On a side note:
It looks like the vice-principal has a devious motive in trying to tarnish the school's reputation. I can't wait to see how this plays out.

I like the art, it's more realistic (well, as realistic as anime can be), all the students aren't super good looking like they are in most anime. Of course, this makes Shin even cuter to me. I kind of want Yankumi to end up with him. :)

The dog.. my only problem with him is the tail! He has a horses tail kind of, it looks like a few hairs. Give him a real dog's tail and I'll be happy.

HaHa. When I introduced this anime to my sister, she kept asking who Yankumi was going to hook up with. She's convinced that Yankumi is going to / should hook up with Shin. Although I keep telling her that it doesn't look like Gokusen's storyline is going with a teacher/student relationship. (At least if you read the manga it doesn't look like it's going that way - i.e. there's someone else she's interested in and it's hilarious what her men suggest they can do to help her advance her relationship with that certain someone. I'm keeping it vague so I don't spoil anything for people. LOL.)

Really liking this so far. Ep 2 was fun.
Warming up to the dog, too. He's doofy :D

This is the first anime with this art style I've watched..but it feels really familiar for some reason. Especially Yankumi and that red-haired kid.
And the art in the ending theme is so pretty~

Warming up to the dog, too. He's doofy Absolutely. I'm on with the dog, never really turned against him--liked the 'cuff me' gag most of all.

I've gotten used to the art style; I take back the thing about the upper lips.. but it looked so strange and I'd never seen it before.. I just--nevermind. The OP song is nice. This is one of the better shows to watch right now. Jump on it while the seeds are good.

Actually I thought the art style is pretty normal as we have seen similar stuff in GTO and also manga works from Hamori Takashi which are worse IMO. Am I also hearing right that this is a woman's manga? I actually enjoyed it when I'm not a woman. :heh:

I have only seen episode 1 so I can only comment on that for the time being. IMO, this is one of those comedy shows that is truely funny. It is classic comedy with old tricks reused but still funny all the same. About the talking dog, I thought he is quite redundent and his narration seems more disruptive than constructive. Well, maybe I will grow to like him more as the series progresses. :p

There's a lot of stuff out there that's "girls" but appeals to people of the male persuasion... most manga seems to be kind of aimed at one audience or the other, rather than balancing both. I guess this is because there's a disparity between what guys are perceived to want (action, adventure, romantic ecchi-comedy) and what girls want (story, romance without ecchi). Personally, I try to avoid differentiating if possible, because even though I'm a guy, there's a lot of good "girls" stuff out there, and a lot of bad "guys" stuff. Judging based on who the manga sells itself for is a bit dangerous, unless you are THE stereotypical audience member.

And whatever audience gokusen is for, it kicks ass. ;)

Tboz

Yep... I wasn't differentiating, I was making a point. :p

Btw, just saw episode 2, still can't get over seeing Fuji when I least expect him to. Infact, I think he's presence is quite distracting in the show, his constipated voice doesn't help too. Another thing I notice, is he's starting to become a quick solution to resolve difficult situations? :(

1) He sort of became a convenient excuse for Kudo and gang getting their ass kicked.
2) He came out of nowhere to stop the policeman from chasing them.Anyway, I don't think I will drop the show just because I don't like Fuji. I find the show quite entertaining to watch, its quite funny. :heh:

Not as funny a GTO (hey, only 3 sub eps. has been released), but good enough for me. This might be a blast if there was a live action version of it...kinda like GTO where the live action overshadows the anime.

Anyway, a good series. The animation style is kinda weird...err...unique though.

ep 7 is waiting for a distro op to be awake, at this precise moment (though I'm only about 90% confident that it's good, 'cause I was pretty damned tired when I checked it and I think the timing for the credit translations was off by a frame or so).
ep 8 is waiting for me to be conscious enough to look at it (again) without falling asleep.

We had some problems with certain group members going on spring break, and others having major life-events. It's mostly handled now ('cause I'm on spring break so I can do stuff more to cover for them)...

and yeah, the main channel conversations tend to get strange. It's its own little community of pedos and pervs and generally fucked up people, and if you're uncomfortable around that sort of stuff (and the hordes of "gimmenarutonoworI'llannoyyoumore" kids), you might not like spending time there. In any case, we don't typically tell them our status either, 'cause it'd build expectations that we'd have to keep destroying over and over again with our unpredictable iterative qc/fix process.

Anyway, a good rule of thumb is "be patient, things happen and life is unpredictable" ...

I just saw episode 07, and the intro scene had me convulsing.
There's something about a bunch of guys singing in falsetto that's just so funny...Anyways, major character development on Fujiyama sensei. After watching this episode, I sure made a wrong judgement call on her. She's deeper than I thought. I really disliked her before, because I thought she was just a boob (pun intended). After this, however, she's a lot more likable. A very contrasting episode, heavy emotional stuff with jokes sprinkled in.

The scene at that aqua center was hilarious. Those poor boys really wanted to meet those girls. And I really wanted to see them "mingle" with the girls as well. Too bad they had to be driven away.

Also some cheesy scenes in the end.

I wish I knew what forum rules you fear you are breaking. Please feel free to continue as long as you don't start saying that you are going to keep on subbing it.

I'll continue a (very slightly) more composed train of thought, now that I've got a bit of sleep between the last post and now .... (even though I could definitely stand some more of the same). This'll probably be less of an abrupt "train fell off the bridge" and more of a "train slammed into a mountainside" session, just for some advance warning (thus may break rules about "staying on topic" -- though I don't think there's a rule for coherency last I checked (which was about 5 minutes ago -- nonsense and lack of clear structure are two different things), so it may still be ok ;)).

Sometimes I wonder about the impact of fansubbing (and gokusen's license in particular makes me wonder about it). I guess I wonder if the dvd-purchasing audience as a whole would likely go out and buy some series with an odd name and unique artwork (like gokusen or narutaru). But then with the ubiquity of fansubs I don't think their effect could really be measured in a meaningful way.

Stuff like RoD and GitS stands on the impact the ovas/movies created and the market hype, and will succeed in colossal ways no matter what (barring being pigeonholed by the license holder, or butchered to hell). These things are prelicensed for a reason: everyone knows they'll be solid.

Then there's stuff in the Gundam series vein... you know a serious gundam series is going to follow the same basic set of rules, and is going to have the same mass appeal to mecha otakus throughout the world that it had 3 or 4 years ago the last time they made a serious gundam series. But I can see why they don't prelicense that stuff ... because there's still the potential for something to go horribly wrong (eg: SD gundam *shudders*)

But there's stuff that's completely new and independent. I think it could be taken as a testament to the strength and appeal of a series when a company licenses it while it's still airing. It's a statement "we're confident in this series, it'll fly in the US and we'll help it do so." At least that's how I like to interpret it. It gives me a feeling that the dvd companies are tuned-in to the community.

But then there are a lot of things around that air completely, get fansubbed completely and as fansubs are very successful, and then a couple months later or a couple years later when they don't look like they'll ever get licensed and are down in the dustbin waiting for the janitor to come and dump them for good someone picks them up, dusts them off, and decides they're worth a second look (see also: azumanga daioh, kodocha, ippo). It's clear that the presence of fansubs in these situations, and the success and popularity of these fansubs, didn't incite the licensors to go and actually try to get the license (pretty much everyone I have asked who followed the fansub community at the time, which amounts to all of maybe 10 people, had seen at all of azumanga daioh long before it ever got licensed, and bemoaned the tragedy which was its sad state of unlicensedness).

So I guess really my line of thinking is ... other than adv's stated position (at a con a while back, that fansubs are just a direct pipe to producing chinese and hk pirate copies), are the dvd companies really aware of the market they're selling to? Are we the market they're trying to sell to at all, for that matter?

I think this was asked to Jerry from bandai back around the creation of #askjerry and the whole "ok, stop subbing gits and gseed, everyone" thing, but like any official rep of any well-known company he was a bit mobbed so nobody really had time to get any more of an answer than "we know what's good" from him.

So is anyone really listening to us? When we say things like "I'd love to see narutaru licensed" or the ever-drooling population screaming "nooooo dont license my naruto eye needz my fix!!1!one!!" and as importantly, how does this relate to the relevance of fansubs in the US. Would gokusen (or ippo, or any other strange-styled series) have been licensed if we (as a community) hadn't fansubbed it? Would it have as much promise on dvd as it does now? Will people be satisfied with fansubs and decide that it's not worth buying the dvds? If dvd companies aren't paying attention, are they missing out? If they are paying attention and acknowledged the role that this part of the community may play, would they be legitimizing an inherently illegal practice, giving us carte blanche that they fear they may have to revoke (and have difficulty revoking, at that) at the behest of the original producers in the not-too-distant future? In other words, even if they are listening, could they admit it without getting themselves into worlds of trouble? Why can't I stop asking largely rhetorical questions?

Bleh ... I'm going to read this next time I wake up and wonder what the hell I was thinking hitting the "submit message" button. Call it 'a window into complich8's mind' if you want to ;). Thanks for the encouragement NoSanninWa -- you are the rock that cracked the dam that subsequently shattered and released the river that flooded out the homes of thousands (or at least the dozen-odd people still reading this thread)

Hmm. that's really interesting. Maybe it is due to the large amount of downloads of the series that helped prompt Gokusen to become licensed. I know that because you guys have been subbing it, I am now looking forward to buying the series on DVD. As for whether or not I would buy the DVDs if I had the entire series on hard drive, I think I still would buy it since I like it that much. I think there is a large community out there that downloads series and do not buy it after it's released in the US, but I think that there is a greater amount of people that actually do buy licensed anime DVDs.

Are any other people here going to buy Gokusen when it comes out on DVD?

Liked the last few eps of this. There was a very odd moment in the last episode - a big payoff in the sort of violence the show kept trying to tiptoe around. It was fun and ironic.

A tiny scene at the very end hinted that although Yankumi already has somebody she likes, someone else is thinking about her...

Overall the anime came off as sort of a novelty/comedy deal, a bit different than the manga. I am not sure at this point if anything would cause me to rewatch it.
