View Full Version : Why not make a contest ?

Well, kinda says it, hey ? There is nothing like a little competition to stimulate production.
So, well, this post is for ''designing'' the contest, and checking interest for it. Obviously, this would be about fan creations.
(Note: Unless a good samaritan wants to provide a monetary prize, I think we can't really hope for a ''real'' prize. Unless, too, we pool some ressources to buy some anime stuff-a figurine, I don't know)

Sounds Cool! :) I Would Participate!

Let me tell you, my fellow artists, a Signature of the Week contest is addicting, as long as someone is always willing to create a userbar or prize for it (of course, there's always +rep for the winner). :p
And of course, set a theme. I'm thinking of a contest that's:
1. First come, first served. 5 - 8 contestants.
2. Voting will be done on a separate thread (or here too).
3. First to reach 5 votes wins.
4. Winner gets a +rep + a userbar or signature. :)
How does that sound?

As contests are, it's very fine, but I was thinking in the fanart-fanfic field.
I'd so like a SOTW :P Here seems enough sig makers for that :)

I would lurve a SOTW contest. I always participate in the ones that are held in the other websites I frequent, but I'm always frustrated due to their having video game themes 90% of the time. An all-anime contest would be amazing.
I'm thinking a different series each contest; example: first week - Shakugan no Shana, second week - Sailor Moon; and so on and so forth. As far as prizes go, +rep and bragging rights would suffice for me. =P
"3. First to reach 5 votes wins."
I've seen this system in action before; and for the most part, it doesn't work. What I would suggest, would be 3-5 assigned (and qualified) judges that give each signature a score out of 10, as well as a critique full with comments about the signature; the good and the bad. The signature with the largest cumulative score wins; or something along those lines.

So like, we will make a signature judge team, or have different judges each week? That system can work fine too. I suggest limiting it to a maximum of 5 if that's the case, though. :p

To raise my opinion, i'm not exactly convinced by any "contest" idea as we were through of something like this quite recently. (see the fresh sky banners? well...)
the issue is most likely the hardship to get through and it doesn't have any guarantee either the contestants, judges or voters can keep the pace. Not mentioning the issues with deadlines etc for repetitive contests.
Finally, I'm not exactly fond of "reward" one. Seriously, i believe signatures should be done for fun and for personal improvement in such "work". Therefore, a competition isn't exactly healthy to my sense. The difference with the AS contest is basically a way to "custom" the forum more appropriately, whole this kind of contest might turn something usually "out of hobby" into "serious business"
The fancreation realm is extremely active in my eyes. You can't even imagine the miserable number of threads there were a year ago... heck there were only like 4-5 constantly updated ones so.
It might be fun true, but the efforts and the result of it aren't exactly what they sound.

QFT!
This is also the reason why I tell people not to worry too much when their threads dont get posts for a couple of days. God knows that those postless days could come back without warning. :eyespin:
As for the contest itself......
I am not very good with siggies, so I'll just have to excuse myself from such a competition. :p

Ohh, contest! I'm interested, as long as it doesn't have to be too hard.

Certainly it's not a "serious business"; it's a for-fun contest on an internet forum. A reward is merely something to entice more members to participate; it's not like the prizes are tangible things that have actual value. As for "improvement in such 'work'", isn't participating in a signature making contest praticing for making graphics? Sometimes making something of a preset theme is more challenging than just picking any stock on your hardrive and adding some effects; that can help some people, and others may just like a challenge.
nice, SOTW, as long as it's freestyle. Bring it on! :D
You'd need a large pool of interested people 'cos I'd think many are more mood based and do stuff when inspiration hits them. If there are only a handful of people, it'd be a disaster if only 1-2 had done something for the contest.
And honestly, weekly seems a bit tiring. xD; I'd not have enjoyed my sig and I'll have to do a new one. If I don't use the sig, then I'd be cursing myself for even doing it in the first place. xD As for fanart/fiction, even moreso since those take even longer to finish.

Agreed, weekly seems too hard to turn in any quality work with the schedule of many as packed as it is (like me :heh:)
I think it's a great idea but just because a few of us like it doesn't mean it will happen.
