This thread is to be used for discussing the entire 24 episodes of Lucky☆Star ... your thoughts about the show, overall impressions, expectations and hopes about the DVD only footage etc.
A few subjects you might want to ramble on about:
General impression of the series.
Opinions on the overall story, writing & plot devices.
Thoughts about the animation quality.
Characters/Character Design
Which kind of footage (DVD only) you feel you'd really like to see.
What the show meant to you.
What could the creators/animators/writers could have done better.
And so on.
The poll represents your total series rating. In other words, how you would rate all the episodes combined (1-10)? If you'd rather rate the whole series by technical/artistic merits, you can do so. An example:
Animation Quality: 1-10
Voice Actors: 1-10
Script: 1-10
Editing: 1-10
Emotional Involvement: 1-10
Average = Total Series Rating
Or a combination of the two. Or your general gut feeling.
Feel free to discuss and more importantly, have fun :)

Good: Easy watch, cutesy characters, good voice acting
Bad: Some jokes is too obscure, aimless story, needless pandering to Haruhi nods, Lucky Channel wearing a bit thin by ep 5, too much on emphasis on one character, not an enduring series, forgettable scenes, some scenes are off for example ghostly mom scenes, some episode are nothing but waste of time since the jokes are repeated again and again
Overall: Casual anime for casual people who don't expect much from animes.
Animation Quality: 6
Voice Actors: 9
Script: 2
Editing: 5
Emotional Involvement: 1
I am wondering if the change of director has anything go to do with insipid episodes.

I said earlier that this wasn't a show for me to dissect for plot consistancy and the like, and I still stick to that belief. Overall it was a very fun romp through the lives of some very entertaining characters. It was a slice-of-life that was both familiar and outrageous at times, and it certainly delivered all that I expected. In the same vein as Azumanga Daioh, I never failed to get me to smile. And its rewatchability is remarkably good.
All in all, was definitely worth my time. Kagami and Konata make a fantastic comedy duo.

Early episodes suffered from bad directing until the director got replaced. Later episodes suffered from over product placement of Haruhi merchandise beyond what is sensible.
Other then that execution of the latter halves were good.
I give it a 9. It was excellent. Really one of the best of the year. ^^
I believe the show's goal was to take otaku culture and bring it into the household in a way that could be easily understood by everyone. Through characters like Kagami the audience played the fool to all of Konata+co.'s geek ramblings, while keeping her bound in reality.
All in all I believe LS's goal was achieved. I showed it off to some friends who were unfamiliar with otaku culture and it still gave them some great laughs. I must admit there were some scenes that were less than interesting, but I feel the same could be said for any series.

This show was very fun to watch from beginning to end and to even follow the daily lives of these 4 friends and their underclassmen friends was a sight to enjoy.
Though I must admit like all the others that have pointed out, the first few episodes of Lucky*Star didn't really give the show a strong start. It was funny, but not as funny when the director was changed.
The Karaoke endings was one of the segments in this show that I really looked forward to. But there were only a couple of songs that I could recognize like the DBZ theme and the FMP? Fumoffu theme, but the other songs were from much older shows that real Otakus would know by heart.
The Shiraishi endings were also enjoyable to watch also. His versions of various theme songs (especially from Haruhi) were pretty entertaining. Although towards the end of the show, it was kinda getting repetitive.:heh:
A lot of references were used in throughout the whole season. Half of it I got it right away, half of the other references left me having blank thoughts.:heh:
The character designs were really cute. Animation was also great and the music matched the mood of every event in every episode. Although there were some stories told in the show, most of them were just background stories, especially on Konata's side. I really did enjoy the episode about her mother...really emotional episode.
Lucky Channel was somewhat entertaining for me. Sometimes it made me laugh, sometimes it didn't.
Even though Lucky*Star will be missed, I don't think a second season would work out....by the last episode, they graduated and are all heading off to college. Another season would just re-use pretty much of all the jokes used in the first season.:heh:...I don't know though, only time will tell.
Overall a 9/10 for me.
For any casual anime watcher, I think they would really get into this show. I recommend it to anyone who isn't really familiar with anime or who is familiar with anime.

I can rate this series on sound and animation and what not. Then it won't get to a 10, but this series has been something that didn't frustrate the shit out of me. Unlike many other series. It was hard to get into the first ep, but after that it was smooth sailing. I for one can w8 for the next cute girls do cute things slice of life anime with good humor. It has its flaws, but still gets a perfect 10 from.

Perfect 10
My kind of anime. Its very slow and relaxed, it doesn't stress me at all. I loled from beginning to end.I would recommend this to anyone with a great sense of humor and a little experience in anime.
Animation Quality: 7
The show is mostly talking heads but when it does have movements, it is good enough to do its job.
Voice Actors: 9
I had nothing to complain about them, however those who stand out in my mind are Aya Hirano, Nozomi Sasaki and Misao's voice actress.
Script: 7
On invidual episodes, some scenes were hit and miss, but the overall package was enjoyable enough for me to make the ride worth my time.
Editing: I need to know what it means.
Emotional Involvement: 9
I have grown to like the characters and their quirks a lot; I'll miss them, I admit I just dont have enough of Konata x Kagami Chandler&Joey-like dynamic, or Hiyori's weird fantasies, the sibling-like dynamic of Yutaka and Minami, Patricia's funny accent and perception of japanese culture, Kuroi-sensei's fake kansai accent, I wished to see more of Yukari and Miyuki interactions. Yes, the show left me with a "I want this, I wish that" taste in my mouth.
I do not feel like listing the good and the bad over again (having done that in various threads or blogs), I personally do not see the references as something genius or awful but more like the ice on my cake, so I did not mind them much. While the show did have its down moments, it was outweighted by the goods, enough for me to give it a 9 mostly thanks to the voice acting and the emotional involvement with the characters.
An excellent series, but not the groundbreaking one, and certainly not the forgetable kind as some have desperately forced its fans to make believe.

gave it a 10.
one reason is that i am a bit tired of anime's that always involves some kind of powers...*cough*
bleach...naruto...*cough* ahem...and others that are too exaggerated. I want anime's now with realism where people act like normal people. Slice of life? Yep. That's what anime's Iam looking for right now. Though the series has it's flaws on the animation quality, it's backup with good scripts and punchlines, plus situations that will make you laugh and good family relationship and ties, the Hiigari and Izumi family sis a great job on this. Other unexpected things are the VA really do appear in and out of the anime and the endings of Shiraishi is always a big LOL, though in the last i kinda liked it, since he did it SERIOUSLY this time, not using his tone voice, but his singing voice. "Love is a Boomerang" is kinda dedicated to Akira imho since there are the lines "She's an Angel, not she's the Devil." kinda matches her character. :heh:
Anyways I'll miss the series. Though Haruhi is up again next I won't watch it until it ends, hated the time watching it mixed chronological episodes. Sorry not my type way to watch any certain film anime, cartoons or real.
Though as said it's not a ground breaking series, all the characters here are great and unique in every way and unforgettable that's what they are. <<<was that a song? :heh:
I know and you know when you watched the series you'll remember those girls aren't just cute loli's, but special girls that will remain in our minds and hearts as long as we remember cheerleaders, otaku girls, tsundere and MOE. :)

Phew. I almost missed class today because I saw this topic and felt a great urge to post in it before leaving home. But the little Kagamin~ inside of me was yelling and telling me to go. Oh well.
Look, I'm giving it a 10. It's a series that is worth a 10, even if it didn't live completely up to that grade throughout the entire show. However, there are a number of factors that play a part in here, and so I'll try to go through each of them and try to keep the post as small as I possibly can.
First off, Lucky*Star came at a time when we definitely needed something to poke fun at ourselves, and to also show that we're not alone in our idiosincrasies. Otakus are really peculiar, because we stem into various branches of the Otaku culture, such as those who go into Shoujo, Shonen, Hentai, Action, Mecha and all of these other classifications that would take too long to list. The social context of this series is that it shows others oblivious to our world that stereotyping us only ends up adding to our point-cards, since, at least in my opinion, we're all outcasts to a certain degree. And when people take jabs at what you like, you're more inclined to ignore them and walk away victorious than discussing with people who would never understand where you're coming from.
The Slice-of-Life part of this series is really on-the-spot. Heck, some of the scenes shown in L*S were so familiar to me that I would watch an episode and keep amazed for days at how well they managed to portray the frustration/surprise that comes with such situations. Tsukasa trying to go through the gate at the subway station when it simply closes on her, Nanako-san losing her long jornal entry on which she worked so hard, Miyuki having trouble with her eyedrops and so many other scenes that you can't help but think "Hey, that happened to me before!" and laugh at it. To me, it was a great way of feeling comfortable with my Otaku persona, because I identified myself so well with Konata that it's almost scary, as I'm sure many millions of other Otaku felt the same connection. She's hardcore, but you don't have to live for the sake of Anime to connect with her, because some of Kona-chan's reactions are really basic when it comes to our world.
As we were discussing at the Episode 23 thread, L*S isn't simply a comedy work - you laugh because of the characters' reactions and the overly funny comments that they throw in, depending on the situation. There're many tragedies in it, but they are hilarious because of the context they take, which is always brought to the parody and comic aspect of them. Know when someone trips and falls into a puddle of mud and you can't help but burst in laughter, even if that was such a sad situation and you feel really bad for the person? It's something like that, except a little less mean. To me it was a good chance of stopping for a second and trying to see the comedy behind my own trips and falls - but it's hard when it's you you're laughing at, isn't it? At least you can do that to these lovely characters and get away from it. All in all, this is a powerful series - when you laugh, you laugh hard. And when it gets down to dramatic and saddening parts, then depression takes in hard as well. I wouldn't be naive to say that this series is one of a kind on that aspect, but it's almost there.
I also had a great time seeing the prototype of how I will be in fifteen to twenty years. Izumi Soujirou is the type of guy who needs to be respected, even if he is an old perverted lolicon otaku. Perhaps that's more of a reason to respect him, since he's a guy well into his 30's and possibly early 40's, and yet he still has that playful, childish self he's known for. He has his own qualities, of course, but his otakuness has broken the age taboo and he seems to have managed to stay the same throughout his life. Perhaps he came along to ease some of the otakus going into adulthood - such as myself - and who are uneasy about how to manage their passion for Anime and the need to leave for the real world. I know I've gotten a bit more confident. If I could only find a Kanata for myself, eh?
Secondly, you have to agree that most of the VAs in the series are top-notch, and they portrayed their characters very well up until the end. Aya's Kona-chan was so funny and interesting to listen to. Her voice is never the same, and the way she talks is so cute that you can't help but feeling like she deserves a glomp. Misao's seiyuu was also really amazing, because her voice, the way she talks and all the odd sounds she makes completely fills her personality. I crack whenever Misao shows up and says something, because she's always hilarious. Of course, Kagami, Tsukasa and Miyuki all have seiyuus that match their personalities really well. Yu-chan and her sweet, low, extremely cute voice is everything you'd want from a strong candidate to winning the Saimoe. Sumi Shimamoto as Kanata simply did it as well - pity she didn't show up more. I'm definitely looking forward to every characters' Singles to come out, because I already picked up quite a few nice songs from the four/five that came out.
Animation was really good, but I would expect that from KyoAni and from the way the anime appears as a whole - rather simplistic characters, abstract scenery and things of that sort. The OST and background songs are enjoyable, and some are even funny by themselves. All in all, everything was in its rightful place, and for that I think that L*S deserves a high rating. It is definitely a series that has set a standard that won't be surpassed anytime soon, and also one that will stay with us for a long time. I definitely feel like the time I spent watching L*S will be engraved in my memories for the rest of my life. I'll stop here, because I forgot many of the points I wanted to convey, but I think that, for the main stuff, it's all in here.

I haven't an intention of giving Lucky Star the "monster rating" treatment; like Mirrinus, I simply don't think a show like this can be rated.
Neverthless, here is the link to my final thoughts on Lucky Star:
[RIUVA] Farewell, Lucky Star (http://www.riuva.com/?p=722)
EDIT: The thing about matriculating and taking up a Japanese language module midway through the Lucky Star run, is how one can know absolutely nothing about what the Japanese words on the title logo means when one first starts watching, and yet can read it by the time the run has ended. :heh:
Yup, enough to make me wonder; if the title is supposedly "Lucky Star", shouldn't they be using katakana instead of hiragana instead? :heh:
EDIT 2: Eh...a link is not against the rules, right? :uhoh:
A few slips, stumbles, and I'm grieved it got a bit trampled in the Haruhi but I *enjoyed* Lucky*Star as much as I've enjoyed any anime I've watched. Ascaloth's review kind of expresses some of my thoughts --- I just found the show to be a marvelous set of character studies of a group of delightful quirky people.
I do hope the manga experiences a long and enjoyable run.
Animation Quality: 7
The artwork is amazingly mediocre for something from KyoAni. Until now, I'm still not sure whether it was a low budget anime, a light project for trainees, or intentionally done so to reflect the basic quality of a 4-koma. However, you can definitely tell that the animation smoothness has the KyoAni touch. I really loved the random 3D scenes, and I wished there were more after Anime Tenchou's first appearance...but apparently not.
Voice Actors: 10
Superb. Not dramatic when the situation isn't (as 4-komas usually don't), and not over the top when it is. Hirano Aya may suck at singing, but she handled the spectrum from Haruhi's sharp, traditionally tsundere speech to Konata's adorably and very believably childlike tone. Other characters, like Kaori Fukuhara as Tsukasa and Kaoru Mizuhara as Misao, also scored great hits. Shiraishi can't sing, but you know what...you can't deny he's hilarious in conversation.
Script: 7
It really should be 10 if not for all the Haruhi advertising and Lucky Channel. For this rating, you really need to read the manga and do the comparisons, and then you'll find that it's actually pretty flat when up against the anime. I'm very, very pleasantly surprised that KyoAni pulled such lively personas and events from this. It certainly takes a lot of imagination and skill on their part. While LC was pretty bad and probably should have been much shorter, it does have its funny parts. You just wish those funny parts happened more.
Editing: 6
Very hit-or-miss. Many transitions were sudden and warp you away from the storyline just when you think something should be happening, and then over to something else completely unrelated. Oh well...it's a 4-koma.
Emotional Involvement: 8
This is biased - I get emotionally involved in a lot of things that I watched. However, nothing has gotten me so hooked as Lucky*Star. The personalities are very believable, nobody is perfect, and everyone is beautiful. The depression I have now stemming from the end of the series is a pretty good indication of that. It really felt like they left you behind, and here you are standing at the airport watching them disappear, remembering all the good times you saw them have...or something. In real life, I tend to be the really quiet one in the corner, and I listen to conversations and feel the emotion in them, even when I might not know what they're talking about. As you can see, I had lots of fun watching over the characters.
Final feel: 9.5/10 --> 10/10
And guess what? It's easily the most influential animes of the year. Through its run, Konata's face was on anything printed by and/or for anyone otaku. There has not been an anime so controversial and polarized for quite a while. Quality or not, you simply cannot deny the fans all over the series. You want to see the next flash mob over Akihabara for Motteke! Sailor Fuku, and you know it.
Animation Quality: 10
Voice Actors: 10
Script: 10
Editing: 10
Emotional Involvement: 10
Yeah, I am biased. :D

Animation Quality: 8/10 <= No obivous graphic faults are found in this series, and the use of drawing methods enhances the mood and expresses the atmosphere of scenes nicely and lively.
Voice Actors: 10/10 <= Aya does an excellent job playing the role of Konata especially the changing of voice due to cosplay. Other voice actors also do a very good job to show the personalities of characters. I give a 10 to this one.
Script:9/10 <= The jokes are so refreshing at the beginning, and you can't stop laughing. However, they start to be repetitive(mostly because of the jokes related to Haruhi) in the later episodes. However, the ordinance will still be entertained by the show. And it is worth watching it over and over again.
Editing: 8/10 <= Broken storyline, I don't have much to talk about it. However, what can you ask for in a series based on a 4-strip comic?
Emotional Involvement: 11/10 <= Sorry for breaking the rules, but I have to give it a score over 10. This part starts to be subjective. I hope my comment won't offense anyone who has read it.
When the series had started, I checked the wiki since I loved it so much. From there, I discovered that Yutaka's birthday is exactly the same as mine. It makes me a lot more passionate to this series. When Yutaka made her first in episode 14, I was addicted by her(her voice actor was the 4th best in the series i think) that she is so cute and lovely with both the apperance and personality.
The Whole series addicted me with the storyline, jokes and also the characters themselves. It is like, the characters are living with you watching it.
Overall: the series is a must to watch, although some gags may not be understood by people who are beginners to ACGN, it is outstanding as a comedy that you will find yourself mentally in the show since the characters reflect the reality.
The Script is quite innovative and refreshing, even now, i still enjoy watching it over and over again. As my ACGN knowledge increases over time, I can have other experience when watching it.
10 to this show.

Well, we can leave the storyline out of this anime, I think. ^__^
Animation: 7/10.
To be honest, it was average. It wasn't that good, but it wasn't that bad either.
Voice Actors/Sounds/Music: 9/10
The VA's [and the conversations between them] were a very essential part of this anime. It would be tough to deny that the humor in this anime is mainly verbal. The music was okay as well [actually, that's why it's a nine instead of a ten]. The music set the right mood, but some very memorable moments in this anime went without background music, which I thought was great.
I have no idea what editing is.
Script: 8/10
Basically, what has been said. The jokes got more interesting as it went on, then went through the Haruhi phase. Around the end the Haruhi references seemed to lessen though. The jokes were great though, and there were great emotional parts as well.
It's the first time I almost cried over a character [Kanata, if I have her name right] with less than 20 minutes of screen-time [although I guess if you include Konata and her dad, then I guess that statement is wrong].
Characters: 10/10
I am so glad that there wasn't the dependable/complete pervert character.
I loved the characters in this anime.
I figure most of you can fill the details here.
Overall: 9.5/10
No, I don't follow an equation for my ratings. Not all anime should be judged the same, and in this one I feel that the characters and the voice actors/script were a major point in the enjoyment of this anime. It didn't matter to me that the animation wasn't the best I've ever seen, since the animation wasn't the reason I watched this anime.

The first couple episodes of the series weren't erally impressive. There were parts of the episodes where I just want to skip. THe later episdoes were really good. Comiket and all the other funny stuffs. So..the Scripting part I will give it a 8.5
For Animation quality... I thought it was pretty good, different from most (if not all) of KyoAnime's works. Refreshing is the word to use I guess. 9
VAs: 9.5, Nothing really to complain about, but I don't think it's perfect, so 9.5 seems fair to me.
Character: 10, For the obvious reason.
Editing: eh... no score..I usually don't take this into my scoring consideration.
Emotional Involvement: 8.5. Obviously, this isn't suppose to trigger a lot of emotion. The series as a whole is very relaxing. The parts where KyoAnime intended to provoke emotions (such as Kanata part) were done pretty well, so.. a 9 seems fair.
Overall, 9.5 round to 10. I don't take the average. Character + VA + Anime Quality are the areas I focus on the most, so the others don't affect too much in my overall scoring.
I would say this anime caught my eyes and the characters are cute too... Makes me wanna watch The old series of Azumanga Daioh again... Great ! :)

I'd give it a 9 overall. It started out a bit slow, and had it's low points. Still, it's a comedy slice of life series and accomplishes what it was intended for quite well. It's not perfect, but most of the episodes were funny and that's really what counts here. Did the series have a lot of story or character development? No, but that was never the intent here.
I gave it a 9, because of Lucky Channel. To be honest, I found it quite boring and really wack. But everything else was excellent. The seiyus did a great job in portraying the character's voices, music was nice and catchy, and the script was, well, probably the funniest I've ever heard. IMO, I think Lucky Star is the best anime of 2007, but wait...there's still Clannad.

Well everyone have their own opinion, which can be completely different from bad to the best anime of 2007 :D
And here comes my view on Lucky Star :)
Animation ( 7/10 ) : Nothing really special but the character are well drawn nonetheless. Most of the times the character is just doing discussion and talking so its acceptable to have little to no great animation. The anime tenchou part is something different though and IMHO it can be consider okay :p
Voice Actors ( 10/10 ) : Without the cast, I don't think it will be this lively and funny. Aya Hirano is one of my favourite (if not the most fav) VA as of now. In here we also see the VAs of Kagami , Patricia , Misao , Tsukasa , Shiraishi, Akira really fitting for each of their character and makes the show lively and funny.
Script ( 8/10 ) : Not perfect but to me , who likes comedy and enjoys Azu, Fumoffu, SR and a few others, it is very good. Although I won't see the comedy the same way I see it from School Rumble and Fumoffu though , as what funny in Lucky Star is not based on the action but their emotion / voice , not those action-type School Rumble type kind of jokes.
Rewatch level ( 99/10 ) :D I cant get enough of Lucky Star and its just one of the few anime (not one anime that come close to this besides Azu or SR , which I still consider LS to be one of the most rewatchable anime as of now) that I can go and pick on any episode and start watching and enjoy at the same time. It is something that I look forward to enjoy when I am not in the mood to start a new series or busy with work and need to take some short break.
Emotional Involvement (10/10) : This is pretty subjective but having watched Haruhi before this series (and I consider TMoSH as one of the best anime) , I really like Lucky Star, alot and end up finding more about it like whos the VA for each of the character and such, especially the VA for Kagamin and Tsukasa :D.
Lucky Star also proof something that I am not well aware of for a long time, Kyoto Animation really rocks, I am a person who don't research much on an anime production team or whatsoever and not really care about it until I watch LS. And I found out that they are the one who did FMP / Haruhi and makes me want to start watching some of the other anime they produced (Kanon, Air, and the upcoming Clannad)
Overall (10/10) : Yes you can say its not perfect but this is my opinion, I am one of the many I think :D who thinks this is the best anime of 2007 (even before watching the upcoming fall anime) and I don't think my view is gonna change either. I like to laugh and Lucky Star provide me with alot of moment to do that. Bravo Kyo Ani for bringing this anime and special thanks to Aya Hirano that IMHO, a perfect VA for Konata. Well maybe theres some other who can do Konata but for me, her voice for Konata is what I like the most in the entire anime (follow by the Konata - Kagami relation and others :D )

While I love the series quite a bit, I'm forced to give it a 9. Simply due to the Lucky Channel aspect. While yes Lucky Channel did have its moments and started to improve later on. The fact remains it still took away valuable time from the series. Also I have to admit I was getting a bit impatient waiting for certain characters to appear. Although once they finally did appear things really started to become more awesome.
The main reason the show appeals to me is I can be relaxed while watching it. I get a variety of cute girls. Each fun in their own way. However with of course Misao being the best. Plus the art style well let's just say has its own appeal. The opening song is quite addictive. Lucky Star may not succeed at being a masterpiece, but it succeeds at being enjoyable. The latter of which is what is actually important to me.

Disclaimer: I'm not one to numerically rate a series. I can't. It's impossible for me to extrapolate my feelings into numbers, whatever they might be. I can't say "Oh, that plot sure deserves 0.5 points more than this one!", or "According to my calculations, animation in this series is 1.5 points more than the one in this other series". I don't know how people in general manage at all to do so... but I don't want to rant on this point, so I'll cut it short and get to the substance.
Disclaimer II: Nothing of what I say here is a universal truth. So if anyone disagrees with what I write here, by all means do so, because nothing of what I say is worth more than what anyone else says.
The starting point of this series is exactly the same as the one in a beloved series of mine, Azumanga Daioh. This, combined with the fact that I'm a die hard Slice of Life fan, and that I usually appreciate Kyoto Animation's work, pushed me towards watching this series. However, in the end, I was disappointed in both the Azumanga Daioh comparison and the (missing) Slice of Life element. Kyoani also disappointed me a bit, with the overuse of needless Haruhi references.
On the "Azumanga Daioh comparison" point:
This might as well be called "emotional involvement". The fact that I can't easily remember the name of half the cast is proof of how little attachment to the characters I felt. Yes, some of them, like Kagami and Tsukasa, were deeply lovable, but I'll take Osaka and Chiyo-chan any day. It's true that Lucky Star had an element missing in AzuDai, which is represented by the otaku-related references, but even those jokes didn't jack me up as much as Osaka's randomness and Yukari's immature attitudes did. Azumanga was also better structured--gags were grouped more or less in a "setting" of sorts (three small "settings" per episode). Lucky Star's gags were randomly thrown around, without a consistent feeling to it. The fault might lie in the original material, though, so I'm not really sure on this point.
But I think the definitive point, the final proof of how much Lucky Star was missing to provide me the same emotions Azumanga did was the ending. AzuDai's ending was deeply emotional--Lucky Star's was bland, anti-climatic and emotionless. I watched Azumanga three times in 6 months... and I don't feel like watching LS again for a long, long time. Perhaps, as I said in the final episode thread, it's because I'm not in high school anymore... but either way, the end result remains the same.
On the "Slice of Life" point:
First of all, let me introduce my concept of Slice of Life. It's not only depicting real life. In fact, you can completely ignore real life, if you want, and still get a perfect SoL show (ARIA is the best example). The importance is in the setting. Some shows focus on character relationships, other shows focus on plot development, but slice of life shows focus mainly on the setting. It can be mixed, though: Azumanga Daioh and Ichigo Mashimaro successfully mix strong character relationships with an equally strong attention to the setting. However, Lucky Star failed to deliver it. I think I didn't even found one single scene where the main focus was a depiction of the setting. This disappointed me quite a bit, since it was something I had expected to see on this show from the word go.
On the "Overuse of Haruhi references" point:
Well, not much to say here. Whatever people may argue against this, the fact remains that there are at least one or two Haruhi references per episode. That's way, way too much. Yeah, I laughed when, in one of the first episodes, Konata is caught watching Haruhi. But after a couple of episodes, the joke started to wear out. The lowest point (when I was actually actively annoyed by the reference instead of just passively bothered) was the Hare Hare dance in episode 16, clearly in my eyes the poorest episode of the series. Yes, I liked SHnY, I liked the Hare Hare dance, I liked Hirano Aya as Haruhi (and as Konata), but just cut it out.
Thankfully enough, from episode 17 onwards the show went back up, and those final episodes ended up being much more enjoyable than the rest of the series.
So what positive things can I say about this series?
The fact that it was funny. Not AzuDai-funny, but funny nevertheless. The fact that it had very good voice acting for the most part. The fact that it had lots of cultural and otaku-related references. The fact that key animation was constant among the whole series. The fact that, in the end, and despite my criticism of it, I enjoyed the series. It's not the best, I don't feel like watching it again, but I enjoyed it anyways.

Animation Quality: 8 Very stylized, but seldom lazy. Great backgrounds, good movement. I think they should have saved double the budget for the final dance number, but otherwise there were only a few times that I noticed missed opportunities.
Voice Actors: 10 The voice talent makes this show. Sebastian and Aya in particular. Again, very stylized.
Script: 4 Spent far too much time on panel 4, when panel 3 was the punchline. We don't need to see Kagami explain that she's annoyed when it's for an obvious reason. Not more than once, that's for damn sure. I felt that this detracted greatly from the show's pacing, which is so terribly important for a comedy. Too many jokes fell flat.
I didn't actually mind the Haruhi or FMP Fumoffu references. KyoAni gets to use them for free, and they weren't any worse than half of Hayate no Gotoku's (largely pointless) references, which are doubly annoying thanks to being beeped out.
Editing: 7 In this area, quality work is work you never notice. The main show itself was well edited. But many things could have been better -- eyecatches, for example. Where were my Konata cosplay eyecatches?
Emotional Involvement: 7 As one of the most vocally hated anime of the season, it's clearly gotten its hooks into a huge number of people. (There are lots of folks who love it, too.) Could have easily gotten a 10 here if the characters showed the tiniest bit of development.
Overall Rating: 7

This show far exceeded my expectations. I think I'll give it a nine, but give me time and that might climb to a ten. I didn't think it was a classic, but it is so memorable that perhaps it was.
For me, the characters were strong all round. And I'm not sure what kind of "development" we can get in a show that is essentially plotless, but I felt that these were fuller characters than the vast majority you see in anime. I got to know them better and better each week. As I've said before, I'll have to watch more of AzuDai, since for me this show was much more enjoyable than what I recall of that one.
And of course I agree with all the praise for the seiyuus. Hirano Aya's Konata was a total revelation in ep1. Several episodes in, people were still posting that they only just realized it was Aya. Tsukasa (Fukuhara Kaori) and Yutaka (Hasegawa Shiuzuka) were deeply moe. Kagami (Katou Emiri) was such a lovable tsundere. And Patty (Sasaki Nozomi) was one of the most interesting "foreigners" I can recall.
The references pleased rather than annoyed me, and I found them funny even when I didn't know where they were from. As for the humor, I'll go back to what I said after episode one: this is not laugh-out-loud humor, but the kind of humor that has you smiling inside from start to finish. They did tend to deemphasize the punch lines, and that was a good thing, in my opinion.
By the way, I completely disagree with rating methods that sum up marks for various aspects of a show, such as animation, voices, story, etc. (e.g., AnimeNfo). That is the way to rate bland but workmanlike shows highly and downgrade shows that make their points by being outstanding in one aspect or another. I also disagree with methods that start with an overall rating, then add or subtract for specific strengths/weaknesses. That method is subjectivity pretending to be objective. I'm actually not so keen on ratings at all, but in any case I rate on overall impression, period. I think of it as being honestly subjective, lol.

Speaking of Animenfo, the review by Kamille is in fact me giving a preliminary review of Lucky Star as of approximately episode 8. Man how things changed since then, both for the good and the bad. I think that's what those in the gaming industry call a "Professional Review, though not so professional in all honesty. Live and Learn as they say.

Getting this out of the way, I though this was a very good and well presented anime.
In terms of a story it was kinda lacking. I mean at least the had a story for each episode, but overtime the episode would completly drift off into another story. Not a major problem but still I would kinda like to see an episode that lasted for the entire episode.
The animation was pure win. It was very fluent and well done. At times it seemed a little choppy but I forgive them it was really minor anyway.
I did not dig the character designs so much. They seemed to look almost to much the same with some minor differences (eyes, hair, height, etc) I know you can't change much before completly killing the cutsey tone the characters have but they could make them look a LITTLE different.
The characters however were interesting. From a manga and video game obsessed girl, to a girl who seems to like the yuri genre. The character cast was wacky and what you would see in a typical American comedy. They all had thier quirks and completly different personalitys which would make you fall in love them by the first episode. Although they were not what you see in a everyday anime. There not anything groundbreaking.
The slcie of life parts were well done and did not seem to bore you without turning the show into a"moral of the story" type show.
The script while funny got reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaly boring after about 8 minutes. I do wish they would exagerate just a little bit (Legendary girl A bit is a perfect example) because I was getting kinda tired of the "Yeah I hate it when that happens" and "You know how this happens when you do this" type conversations.
Okay now for the humor. Haruhi refrence=WIN
Haruhi refrence AGAIN=WIN
Haruhi refrence once AGAIN=LOL thats cool
Haruhi refrence another time=Okay enough now
Haruhi cafe scene=Was there really any need for this?
As you can see the Haruhi refrences got boring and tiring. The refrence to other animes was a good to see though and whenever the script squeezed in a funny line or convo it would get me laughing out loud hard.
Voice actors were great. Can't say much else.
I have grown to love SOME of the characters and though all were presented nicely I did not like some of the characters.
So overall.
Animation Quality: 8-10
Voice Actors: 9-10
Script: 7-10
Humor: 7-10
Editing-Don't really understand what you mean by that.
Emotional Involvement-6/10
Overall-8/10
I'm done
I would give the series a 9.5 out of 10. Lucky Star was pretty damn good. The ending is open for a second season and I can't wait for the next season. I'm too lazy to write a review.

If i repeat the Sound/Animation/Character....etc....., i will really feel like a copycat. So spare me for short post. =]
I give the whole series personally a 10, because it actually beated up my expectation in every espisodes and raised my anime medium standard up into a whole new level. I don't compare one anime with other series , you see. I compare it with its self part that I predict.
The most impressive thing i noticed from Lucky Star is: the voice actor really did a brilliant job (way over my expectation) and many small moving animation actually can give a whole lot of character building.
Sad that's the series end, but hope a short season, or maybe few OVA will come out .
A solid 9/10.
The series had a slow start but quicky picked up. It seamed like the makers were looking for there style, trying diffrent approaches and see what would work and what not.
Great animation, great voice action, not so good on the story and original humor.
Overall it is THE comedy show of this year (well... for now maybe).

I loved this serie they have the perfect formula
Start a harem anime with the main male characters, add many different girls and then....take out the guy and let the girls have fun by themselves! XD
We need a 2nd season. This show has such a timeless feel to it, I could keep watching it forever

I gave it a 9. It's not that it doesn't deserve a 10, actually, I believe it should receive more than a 10, but a 9 simply because of the crazy Haruhi references. I don't mind it, and I might be contradictory here, but it does get a little crazy sometimes. Add in the fact that AVPlaya had to explain many many of the references made.
And that I hated Lucky Channel, it wasn't funny, until Shiraishi went psycho and Gotouza-sama came for a visit, but anything before that, LC was crap.

Ok so they went a little overboard with the Haruhi refrences, but it was more in tiny segments then an actual part of the show. You can actually miss it by closing by blinking your eyes most of the time. To be honest how where you watching that every Haruhi reference can irritate you. The only ones that stood out to me was Kona's at the cosplay cafe and her switching voices, but that was pretty hilarious for me. :O
The reason why I gave this a 10, what might come out as a bias. Which it is, but do you know how many anime that can make biased? Not many. People expect Lucky star to have much more since it's so popular, but have you thought about the factor that the simple fun is what made it so popular? As an bonus it has some drama, humor that is somewhat painfull and showing the harshness of life. Though well hidden, but definitely there. This series is one of the best slice-of-life's I have seen in a while. The next one to top this is probably Yotsubato! which will even beat Azumanga Daioh easily, but that's based one how much better Yotsubato manga is then the Azumanga Daioh manga and anime.

I just finished watching the series (all the eps made so far) and I have to say this was a funny and sweet(as in adorable) anime that I'm sure will have a cult fallowing like any good series. Event though the series had no giant robots(except in Konata's fantasies), epic twists or over-voluptuous females I found myself hooked to this show wanting to see what happens next no matter how "un-epic" it is. The "Lucky Channel" bits, the anime store owners bits, and ending credit bits(especialy when they go live action) are hilarious.
I even found myself having a bit of a crush on the blue haired, quick-tougned, Konata because I get her way of thinking of finding the cool in something most people will find boring, and while she indulges into her love for anime and games she can keep her head in reality and make a living. Isn't that what most hardcore-anime-fans want in a mate, someone who not only gets you but is like you.
What I think makes show anime so well without going to the old epic stand-by's and just sticking to normal every-day topics is that almost anybody can relate to these characters, anime fan or not. Whether your a the by-his/her-self type, the hard working type, the shy type, the too weak and unhealthy to do what you want type, the foreigner type, want at least some boobage type, or whatever type of person you are, you'll likely find a characters in this series that you will understand and fall in love with (if you haven't figure it out yet, my character's Konata. tongue. :D).

Did I give a series rating already? I don't remember. In any case...
I like the otaku jokes, as its blended in with the story, so I can 'get' it despite not knowing much about otakudom. Compare this to Hayate no Gotoku, where references are basically 1 to 2 second lines/pictures... Thank god for Konata, who made me start to watch the show in first place.
Of course, main reason why I like this series is because of Kagamin. She's by far the most interesting of the group, the most unique (being the sense of reason), and the most kawaii. If Konata is bait, she is the hook.
Insight to Japanese culture gives it bonus points. LS owes a big chunk of its rating to the endings (both karaoke and minoru) and Lucky Channel, both of which I found highly amusing to the end. No real plot to speak of, since this is basically a character driven slice of life show, so its no real biggie. Characters are very well done, which in this kind of show is all that matters.
It does make me watch the episode as soon as its done, but not to the level of Bokurano or Gigantic Formula in which I feel I want the next episode NOW. They're missing that extra 'oomph!', and that with the fact that I found some of the episodes lacking, I do think that my rating is extremely generous as it is.
Series Rating: A-
Fighting for third place in the spring 2007 lineup with HnG, RxJ, Oofuri, and Overdrive.

the second half of the show was a lot better than the first
While a couple of my favorite episodes were early (notably episode 10), I would agree that when they started introducing the excellent extended supporting cast in the second half the show was better overall.

While a couple of my favorite episodes were early (notably episode 10), I would agree that when they started introducing the excellent extended supporting cast in the second half the show was better overall.
To be honest there was actually a point I started to become worried about this series. Mainly because I kept thinking "What's the point of having all these characters in the opening if they'll never appear?" Granted that was before they appeared. Once they did appear my worries more or less went away.
This show gets a perfect 10 out of 10. This show felt alot like the anine version of Signfield. The show was practicly about nothing, but was about everything at the same time. They pulled off the humor very well and the "Slice of Life" feeling was very much there.
Oh and i loved the Haruhi refrances! Thoese were fun to watch pop up every now and again.

Lucky Star has shown me what would happen if I was a girl.Konata's Otaku-ness is sure extraordinary, and her father is exactly like her..
General impression of the series. - 10/10
Awesome animation, great character design.
Opinions on the overall story, writing & plot devices. - 9/10
Haha! I'd love L*S. It has all I wanted, comedy, a bit of "drama" (Kagaminya's scenes. First scene at ep 15, you see). Awesome script!
Thoughts about the animation quality. - 9/10
Characters/Character Design - 9/10
I'm only disappointed becouse they didn't introduce more Hiiragi's mom, MIL- Miki :heh:.
Which kind of footage (DVD only) you feel you'd really like to see.
*exited exited* That game that comes on DVD1!
What the show meant to you.
It's the first ever show that I followed (Yep, I was a newbie in the anime =P I didn't knew the anime episodes were one by week). So it meat a lot for me, I did never watch RAWs before. All the Sundays I was so exited to watch the new Lucky Star episode.
What could the creators/animators/writers could have done better.
They could introduce sooner the other characters, IMHO.
Total = 8/10 - Good!

I think I'm happy with giving this series a rating of "average" ("6").
At the end of the day, the show was simply too hit and miss. Some episodes were ROFL funny, which others (which unfortunately made up the majority) would have only two barely-smirk moments in the whole thing, and others still were even worse and were simply dead boring. I didn't enjoy the slice-of-life component, because I couldn't connect with any of the characters (although I did find a couple like Misao and Tsukasa and Hiyori to be mildly entertaining, though not terribly deep). I hated the fact that, every time Lucky Star attempted to be reflective and emotional (and "sappy" I'd say if I were a cynical person... which I clearly am not), it'd quickly cut away to something with a completely different mood, without giving the audience any pause time. I thought that was a really clumsy way to handle the more serious scenes, since it stunted their impact.
But, ultimately, these are all minor complaints compared to my biggest problem with the show: the repeated, unfunny gags. Let me list: Lucky Channel, Anime Tenchou, Shiraishi's singing, putting Takichi's voice to every single goddamn extra in the show, etc, etc (I'm sure I've already forgotten a few others, my brain is more susceptible to purging unwanted memories in my old age). The rest I could tolerate... this stuff, I couldn't. When a show takes its least funny jokes and rams them into the ground, that's what I consider the mark of a really poor comedy.
I thought this show had completely lost its way towards the end (which isn't unusual for comedy in anime, since they tend to have such short lifespans) since there was a period of about ten or so episodes were I rarely got a laugh, but then a couple of the eps towards the end were really funny. When a show like this that's barely entertaining suddenly throws a couple of interesting episodes at you at the end, the first thing I tend to think is "wasted potential", and that's a pretty good way to sum up Lucky Star, for me. It can be funny, and hell, it even was at times, but the overwhelming majority of it was inane, and I thought both Takemoto and Yamamoto handled the whole thing clumsily. I think this will be a "quickly forgotten" anime... quite literally. This is one of the only anime I've seen where I can barely remember what happened three weeks ago, even while I was watching it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this series but for someone who only watches a specific genre or starting anime some of the stuff is way over your head. Even for me and I watch quite a wide range of genres some of things are well over my depth, eg the Marimite sequence, as it's not something I would watch but a little bit of googling put things into context. It does really help to have seen a few different styles of anime to enjoy this IMO. I try not to over analyse things and take stuff at face value with a series like this. I wouldn't say that this series is random, but rather having a loose plot. The only thing I found tiring were the numerous Haruhi tie ins, but even that can be forgiven as its the flavor of the month as series' go. If you're looking for something deep and meaningful - look somewhere else, this isn't it. If you're after a laugh and have a grasp of certain anime concepts you'll enjoy this.
Ill probably just say what some of you other guys are saying but this is my opinion.. Ill try my best to express my self in English even though it can be tricky sometimes. (My native language is Swedish)
Well ok Here we go..
The first episode I watched was like wut? Why are they talking about eating cakes XD I was not very in to "slice of life" animes before I watched L*S but somehow it awakened a side in me that thought: This is just so relaxing and fun to watch, I LOVET IT XD!
If you are somewhat anime interested you can relate to Konata all the time ! And all the spoofs and quotes from other animes makes you lol even more.
Even ordinary things such as, eating a cake or the problem that your boobs are to small are shown, and it makes me feel like this could happen to anyone.
The characters all seem so well though through that they could be real humans! I could probably ask anything and the makers would have an answer what Konata would do in that situation XD And the interaction between the two groups of girls in the is so awesome. In the end I think there was atleast one scene were all of the girls had talked to eachother ^^ So i say Character development 10/10
The animation feels relaxed and not to detailed. It wasnt made for being an awesome animation. This just makes me concentrate more on what is actually happening instead of looking at all the beautiful surroundings. I think they made an awesome job with the type of animation they used. Animation 7/10
The opening is totally amazing 'nuff said ^_^
Well since I have been following this since the day it aired it has become a part of my week and I'm really sad to loose it. Lets hope they release a comedy with such quality as this one.
Overall 10/10 I LOVE LUCKY STAR!

Personally for me, I am part of those people that watched one episode of Lucky Star, blinked in the amount of "weirdness" in it and walked away from it... only to come back re-watch the entire series. :heh:
Originally told by my friend about this series, and she said it has a nice change of pace compared to Higurashi (which was what we were watching before she suggested we switch over to Lucky Star). After watch episode 7, and despite being HIGHLY amused by the characters' antics, I told her that it isn't my anime and I probably won't give it another shot.
How wrong I was, as two months later, I marathon'ed Lucky Star in my weekend. XD
It starts out very sudden, I think. Without any sort of explanations, you are kind of just thrown into the situation with our four main characters and kinda left to understand their antics by your own. It is what makes the show nice and simple however.
While the jokes and references were funny as well, I find it is the personality of the cast in Lucky Star that motivated it to becoming one of my all-time favorites. That and because of the show is generally ran by their personalities and its simpleness, it also has a rather high re-viewability. As one of the posters said, you can grab any one of the episode at any time and just watch it whenever you are bored and still get that same enjoyment.
I also rather despised Lucky Channel because I thought it was a waste of time. By the end of the series, I almost always skipped that part until Shiraishi went and destroyed their set, then I watched it again. XD
The only good thing about Lucky Channel however is that it is the only source of some explanation of what is happening with the cast. Though they never quite introduced Konata, but just introduced Kagami, Tsukasa, Miyuki, and the new characters that enter later in the series (I wonder why didn't they introduced Konata?).
Now, onto the more technical bits...
While the animation isn't great or detailed or fancy, and it is also somewhat different from KyoAni's previous works, I thought the simplicity of the animation fitted the anime perfectly. I simply cannot imagine Lucky Star to be drawn in the FMP fashion or anything likewise. Its lack of a story plot doesn't suit those kind of animations at all.
Music is also well-executed here, KyoAni seems to know when to just let the music stop or run. It is not FANTASTIC, except for the part where Kagami received her love letter and Kanata visits Konata and her dad, but it does its work perfectly. It is often happy-go-lucky and has a nice happy beat to it, and they also know when to just start letting it go in order to convoy the characters' mood towards the situation (it usually Kagami's mood, to be honest :heh:).
All of those helped Lucky Star present itself as what it really is, but what really worked is the script. I personally found the script to be AMAZING... and I rarely say that. :heh:
So, I am a bit amazed when someone here actually gives the script a low score, but of course, all to their opinions. The script however really brought the characters' to life, while KyoAni's executions weren't always perfect, they are usually pretty close, and at times did hit the perfect mark (Again, the Kanata scene is absolutely one of the points where their execution was perfect).
In order to sum it all up, while I won't say Lucky Star is the best anime of 2007 or something like that, but it is rather one of the anime I'll remember and it'll stay in my mind for a long time. I am also definitely buying their DVDs too. :p I definitely enjoyed watching Lucky Star. However, due to some of its errors at times and Lucky Channel, I give Lucky Star a 9. :D
I think my biggest problem with this show has already been mentioned. Lucky Star is essentially a close look at little tweeny trivial details of Japanese life and otakudom (actually, I think that's what the show seemed to be about, but I'll get to what I think is the show's essence at the end). They bring up interesting stuff to talk about, things we all (or at least many of us) obesrve in life and nod 'ah that's so true...' (to borrow a certain person's expression). The problem is that they never go beyond that. There are many moments that were building upto something, and I could sense something lot more intriguing and emotional than their usual 'haha thats funny.NOT.lets talk about something else' fare. But there is rarely a moment that is special or memorable, because they always end those conversations/moments into pathetic attempts at comedy, and makes for an awkward awkward and damn awkward transition into the next gag. As for the comedy, I'm aware of the fact that I'm not part of the targeted audience, yet it most of the time isn't funny even when I get the reference, so I believe that comedy is not its strongest point.
And my second problem has again been mentioned, unfunny stuff that they're always repeating for reasons beyond me (well actually no, I suppose they exist because lot of people did like them. For reasons also beyond me). Lucky channel is a big one of them. Yes I got that you're making fun of the life of Idol and the life and business behind it, no need to repeat that for 23 more episodes thx.
However, my 'problems' aren't really complaints but simply reasons why this show could not be anything outstanding. I truly enjoyed this show and don't remember a single moment that I considered a waste of time. The characters aren't anything complex, they're all simple and remain one-dimensional characters with negligible development. What's important is that they're interesting and very likable, I grew fond of them over time, and that made me feel warm about watching them talk about everyday stuff (despite the retarded loli character design for nearly college girls). Characters themselves might think they're boring and obnoxious, flat chested, short and useless, etc. but they are all different in their own ways (although pretty much based on cliched archetypes), and to other characters, they're special and valuable girls. Konata might be a total geek and have no real friends other than the trio, but to them and especially her dad (as is evident in episode 22) she is irreplaceable. Cold, unfriendly, flat-chested Minami is likewise the most special person to Yutaka. Otaku habit of staying up at night to play games or obnoxious tendency of forgetting to get off the train because she was too busy reading are interesting only because the characters I like are laughing about it and making fun of them. Each cast is perhaps like a tiny, but pretty and bright (lucky?) stars in the night sky, illuminating dark and uninteresting nothingness surrounding them. Ok, that was bit melodramatic of me and the characters unfortunately don't get many opportunities to shine so brightly.
The last few episode of Lucky Star are also something I consider memorable, I especially loved the whole Konata-her dad-her mom talk and the fuss over the dancing practices. That was really heart-warming (only if rest of the show was like this *sigh*). Mediocre in majority of the executions, but still delivering plenty of amusements with fun characters that grows on you over time, this show is simply good(7).
1st off let me say this... LUCKY STAR IS NOT FOR US.
Seriously, this was made for the Japanese, with more and more references to their life as it went on.
Well i gave it a shot none the less, here's what i though:
Script: 0 What? there was a script?
Characters: 7 for some reason, konata always seemed annoying. Well, they weren't all so bad
Animation: 5 pretty basic, and boring
Rewatch: 6
Overall rating: 4/10
This series really isn't for me, nor should it be for those outside of japan, as we really cannot relate to such things, it's the same as being a person who laughs at jokes they don't catch.

Final ratings aside,I don't agree with this. AT ALL!
Well let's take a look.
Script: 0 What? there was a script?
No. This is a "Watch the anime girls walk around and talk about how to eat food" show, Not much of a plot but:
Characters: 7 for some reason, konata always seemed annoying. Well, they weren't all so bad
eh, ot to me but, not every last person on Earth has to Idolize Kona-chan. ;)
Animation: 5 pretty basic, and boring
You'd better be joking, that OP didn't look too boring to me. :/
Rewatch: 6
Should Re-watching seriously be rated?:heh:
This series really isn't for me, nor should it be for those outside of japan, as we really cannot relate to such things, it's the same as being a person who laughs at jokes they don't catch.
umm,, WTF?! Is this supposed to mean that I, an angry German boy from Wisconsin, shouldn't watch Lucky Star, JUST because it was meant intentionally for the Japanese people?! Well then, I probably wouldn't BE here, if I couldn't watch shows from another planet, I mean country, AND I'd be stuck watching flying $(-)!& balls on Nickeloadeon/ D!$n3y/ Cartoon Nothing!
erm, overall is good for me, i love it although got few episdoe quite bore...but overal are funny and good to watch. It's all about the normal life, watching this anime let me remind of my secondary school life :D.
first off, let me say that im not really otaku, but i'll also say that this is, without a doubt, my favorite anime (if not animated show overall)
Konata is definately my favorite (as my avatar/title will probably show), but at the same time, there were some frequent obscure anime references by Konata that i didnt get; this wasnt any bit of a problem, as i enjoyed watching the other characters not get them either (i got the Haruhi references though, as i started watching it shortly before i started watching Lucky Star)
voice acting: 9/10, only because this is the first subtitled anime i've watched, so i really have nothing to compare it to in that sense
from what i saw, the voices seemed to fit teh characters perfectly (i thought it was especially funny that Konata has the same voice actress as Haruhi, given her cosplaying and all, so i hope that the dubbed version does the same with the english VA)
story: 10/10 very random, but this isnt supposed to be some deep intricate epic storyline either, so it suits the show very well (this is a slice of life anime, and you have to admit--life can be pretty random at times)
emotional involvement: 9/10
a bit hard to put into words here, except to say that all of the characters are very likeable (especially Konata)
overall (at least to ep 10 which is where im currently at): 10/10
nice to see something normal out there, as in with no fighting robots/powers/demons/samurais/etc; funny, understandable and relatable characters (a slight surprise with this being from a foreign culture), random, but still making sense; a perfect slice of life anime

It's a decent series didn't really make me laugh much did chuckle a few times each episode but not many laugh out loud moments.
I gave it one of my rare 10 !
I think I never laughed that much and that hard while watching anything in my life..the show is just so full of surprises, and I didn't even understand ALL the jokes and references... I almost choked to death while laughing to hard when watching Konata's father talking about his lolicon. Of the most pleasant anime I've watched :D

For the Lucky CHANNEL segment,,,,, 5/10 to 6/10.
Cute at first, but seriously annoying by episode 06. :/
1st off let me say this... LUCKY STAR IS NOT FOR US.
Seriously, this was made for the Japanese, with more and more references to their life as it went on.
Newsbreaker: ALL anime is made for the japanese... if you're going to watch it, you should assume you might have to actually learn something about japanese culture and pop. Anime is not from another planet though it might seem so to an extremely provincial viewpoint. All anime in Japan is made using japanese sensibilities, morals, culture, and referencing.
Even with that, your assertion is not supported. Lucky*Star uses a comedy format entirely approachable by Western eyeballs -- if you've ever seen Marx Brothers, Seinfeld, Animaniacs, comedy duo routines, ..... Even if you don't recognize a specific parody, it was pretty obvious when they were parodying something. Also, the parody and referencing jokes are not the core of Lucky*Star -- in fact they were anime-only. Most of the story is just about a pack of modern high school girls in Japan.
Script: 0 What? there was a script?
yes, quite an extensive set of sketches in a format familiar to anyone who has ever read Peanuts.... O.o
Animation: 5 pretty basic, and boring
Missed all those KyoAni stellar moments of animation and art?
The art and animation was designed based on the manga (which is a 4-koma in the style of Peanuts and most daily comics) -- each episode had some of the usual amazing KyoAni moments added (3-d, fastframe animation, etc)
This series really isn't for me, nor should it be for those outside of japan, as we really cannot relate to such things, it's the same as being a person who laughs at jokes they don't catch."This series really isn't for me..." is where you should have stopped. The rest of the sentence is pretty insulting to the many viewers who had no problem "relating" or "catching the jokes".
Lucky*Star anime adaptation is not perfect by any means but it was certainly not an opaque alien transmission of indecipherable nature.
I dont know how u can give a good score to this anime really i give it 1 of 10 its not THAT bad in some aspects but i got sick of lucky star (or lucky shit in 4chan)
Animation Quality: ok here it gots a "good" score i will give it a 6
Voice Actors: the voice actors where the only good thing here its a 7
Script: sucks no history no trama no nothing it was like watching azumanga daioh with more loli design worse jokes and parodys
I never laughted too much with lucky star in the begining it was good but well with the time it got worse... and worse... lucky channel was just unfunny was just too boring... most of the jokes where obvious and tedious and the "random" parts where just stupid... i love random programs... i love comedys... but lucky star was unfunny and a boring predictable random... i give it a 1 for this and a -3 penalise for all the bad things
Editing: not to much to say 5
Emotional Involvement: -10 ... nothing to say
the last chapters of lucky star i have to Pause it go and see or play something more cause i get to bored or sick of it in fact i only watched until chapter 22...
and its more after watching luckystar i got sick of haruhi everytime i see haruhi i think about lucky star and i get sick =S
There are 1000 better comedy random funny loli parody than lucky star
I think we gather you didn't enjoy it. Perfectly fine, it isn't for everyone. But the last line caught my attention :)
Okay... name them? (or at least a top ten?). That would give us an idea of what you consider more entertaining. We might have some recommendations :)

1000 is a way to say that there are a lot of better animes... well lets see
Parody Comedy & Random
the 6 that comes to my mind now are
Azumanga daioh
Pani Poni Dash
Excel Saga
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
Doujin Work
Hayate No Gotoku
well there are a few of this kind that arent anime like family guy or simpsons but all the world knows them x.X
Then for LOLI animes there are tons of them
Kodomo no jikan is a example of loli anime
i just wake up and got to do work later when im more awake im going to post more
PD: And im not trying to be agressive with the people who liked lucky star only with the anime itself i think that is boring unfunny and more =p
Agreed and I wasn't really challenging you... was just curious as to what you thought was good. Looking at your list gives me a clue that you actually even like this sort of thing... though I'm fascinated that AzuDa and PPD are on your list yet you're so harsh about the humor and characterization in this series. For me, the main aggravations were the injected references (anime-only), the Animate Tenchou (anime-only) and the Lucky*Channel (anime-only)... <shrug> I had to dig a bit to find the adaptation of the manga I enjoy.
I'm not clear on what your loli reference is about. This series is about high school seniors, not 11 year olds. The characters have figures (except for Konata, mom, and cousin) and dress normally. I've no idea why KnJ even enters this discussion O.o

well lets see its cause the LOLI drawing a loli its not only a 12 years old.. loli is a kind of drawing where the characters looks younger than her age and too have a not grown up body... the kind of drawing is a "loli" drawing for example in azumanga daioh u can see that some characters have large breast or in PPD the same in LS u see all the characters and the basic shape is the same and even if someone have large breast it still looks a bit "small"
Usually most of the lolis are underage (-18) years old and have body like 12 years old and as u can see konata kagami and Tsukasa for example have that kind of body i dont think that the twins have larger breast than A cup
And well the other thing u asked is why i hate so much Lucky Star if i like PPD and Azumanga well its easy
Azumanga was random and most important FUNNY
Kimura allways with his random shouts screams and responses
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftAMtTH6mKQ
Osaka the slow girl allways giving something to laught about
Chiyro allways geting scared by the others
in PPD is pure of randomness and there are a TON of parodys... the characters are original and maybe i dont laught too much but it has a lot of good parts
In Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei its also sometimes school live and the personalitys are well defined and critices a lot of things in a better way than lucky star
the worst part of lucky star is that they show it as boring as it is to watch IRL of someone else... i cant laught about slow and predectible things... i cant watch it like any other anime cause it dont get my atention
i liked lucky star not the first 2 chapters exept 1 or 2 comments and after chapter 3 i started to like it a bit until chapter 10 then it started to get boring and more boring and with the time i just hated it cause only speak about haruhi haruhi and predictable things
I said it and i say again lucky star was an anime for 13 chapters if that would be the case then it will been more active anime (if they compress all in 13 chapters they may omite some boring parts and more characters faster)
my english is bad but i think that i expressed myself enought to u understand

To be honest seeing the list you posted as good. Made me think you have a broad sense of humor. You bashing the LS humor as slow? To be honest Azumanga Daioh wasn't all that fast either. Ok so you liked PPD parody's, but LS's is bad? While I do think SZS is good, but come on personalities is what makes LS so good...
Get off the Haruhi thing stop making it sound like that was the only thing you saw that was only a small portion of the show. The voice switching and the cosplay café was just hilarious tbh.
Compressing it to 13 eps? That's kinda too much of a good thing. Some people(me) liked the pace. It isn't all about the comedy. It's also about the overall feel and ambiance. You can't rush that.
Haven't tried Excel Saga, but Doujin Work was just bad...
The animation a 6? Of the 6 series you posted LS has a superior animation did you give all of those 3's and 4's?

Well, yeah, maybe he just saw something different in L*S that caused him to irk at it... who knows? :uhoh:
I was surprised that a lot of people from America actually liked this show. There's just way too many elements that can only be understood by native Japanese. But moe and energy seems to be enough to buy a lot of audience here. Which is perfectly fine... those are elements Kyoani excels at and is certainly worth viewing by itself.
The rest of the shows Kabi listed actually has a lot more global appeal, even Zetsubou Sensei.
But from Argentina? Yeah, I would bet that he didn't like LS. Plus, the reason he listed is logical. He doesn't like the art style, which is the only thing for foreigners to get from this show. Only thing left is the little bit of global humor.

You have a really unusual definition of loli --- just expect people to look at you very strangely when you explain it :) And,um.... only Konata comes close to an A cup and a hipless figure... the twins and the others have pretty clearly defined figures. The comic style of the manga and the anime does accentuate the heads (since it is after all a "talking head" style comic - mostly verbal and facial expression).
Makes me wonder what you think of a number of other comic and cartoon styles O.o
The rest of your post other people are addressing, so I think I'm done :)

@Rembr: ??? You're joining a small persistent group of people that assert Lucky*Star can "only be understood by native Japanese". <sigh> There is not a thing in the series that can't be understood by anyone on the planet who takes a moment to look things up or study a bit about Japan. Its just pop culture, some proverbs, local dishes, a bit of religion and ritual, local customs.
I really don't understand anime fans that don't do a bit of study --- but even then its no more "alien" than Monty Python (full of local political jokes of the 70s, pop culture, references).

I had no problems understanding the majority of references in LS, and I don't live in Japan. I am, however, quite an otaku so very little escaped me. I found the series immensely enjoyable on all fronts. I loved the art, the character design, the personalities, the interactions, the setting, the music. Everything.
Except Lucky Channel. It was the only part of the show I just... didn't enjoy. It would have been better to have each episode run a couple minutes longer and just do without it entirely. But I just didn't like Akira, at all whatsoever.
One of the things that really won me over early in the series was the ED karaoke. Really going back years before the digisubbing scene, so most 'modern' anime fans wouldn't get it. But I loved it.
I can see how a series like this may fail in the US market, though. Because there are a lot of people who just... aren't otaku enough to get it. It would fall flat, I think. Sales would probably be quite low, but that's not the fault of the series. It's just the kind of show it is.

I think the definition part of it is pretty accurate... but the only character that is loli is Konata... anyone else have a figure of some sort, so they are not under-developed at all... and since they are in high school, they are also definitely not underaged.
As Maxwell says, the definition may be accurate... or at least that's one of the definitions of "loli". But the usage (labeling the whole series as loli) is odd since the only "loli"-figured people on the show were Kona, her mom, and her younger cousin.... and none of the senior class or adult characters were "under-age". The junior and entering class characters (including the younger cousin) at 14/15, are only 'under-age' under certain conditions in some jurisdictions.
@Rembr: I used Monty Python as a reference since it is a British comedy that was wildly successful in the US despite being replete with "content only the British could understand". Lucky*Star is pretty much on the same sort of bracket.

Lucky*Star is pretty much on the same sort of bracket.Hm? Monty Python (mostly the Holy Grail) had contents that were entertaining beyond its British only content. LS is similar, and I conceded that 'way too many' was a bit overboard of a statement.
Still, if you had to do research to understand certain content in LS, that doesn't really strike me as something that an average anime fan over here would understand...
Some anime doesn't really take research to understand and enjoy. In LS's case, if moe and otakudom isn't your cup of tea, then it is gonna take some... research... to appreciate.
Monty Python's television series (which was hugely popular in the US amongst the same age groups that enjoy anime now) .... often made no sense at all unless you knew something about British Politics and Society, but then it had enough raw comedy and slapstick absurdity that even "the peasants" could laugh at some of it. That's why I compare L*S to it on occasion: I'd guess about half or more of Lucky*Star was approachable without knowing a thing about Japan though it required some familiarity with American styles of comedy (Seinfeld, Marx Brothers, comedy duos (e.g. Burns&Allen), Peanuts, etc).
Sadly, a lot of time was spent early this year explaining American comedy to americans by some of the posters in this forum.
I'll plead a bit of aggravation because we periodically get someone asserting via post that L*S will never get licensed because its "unapproachable" ... all the while Pani Poni Dash (a much more heavily layered mess of in-jokes, japanese references, wild comedy, and absurdism) is happily being sold at fine outlets and websites in the US.

Don't forget What thy call "The MElancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" Yeah, that place is insane!
Not to my taste. The loli design of the characters really bothered me and the humor was completely off killing my enjoyment. The characters were unimaginative... especially Miyuki and Tsukasa. I guess this is what forced moe is all about. Tsukasa was the best of the group.
I wasn't able to watch the whole thing but i guess it's normal since you should watch till the end only the shows you like. No point in watching a show made of boring jokes. There are much better parodies show out there.

Best anime I have seen so far. I just love the humor in it. The first three episodes could be bether, and the animation too, but I vote 10 cause I just love this anime xD

We just said it seems funny that judging by your usual taste that you didn't find Lucky Star funny, and that is okay. So, we leave it at that.
Unless you haven't realize it, your opinion is solely your's and we respect that... but to call our liking "incoherent" just due to your own personal taste... I find it stretching it a bit too far. :p
Edit: While you are here, this is a Lucky Star section. The series is far from over, so any people who DIDN'T like it would have long left unless they just started to watch it. So, you'll bound to encounter a thick density of people who actually enjoyed this series. Having that said, the people posting here aren't all die-hard Lucky Star fans, we just enjoyed the show for what it is. That's that.
It looks like the coherency thing may be over-rated... :)
On a separate note, I am beginning to wonder if we ought to start issuing glossaries and dictionaries. Since we're basically discussing a "large head cartoon character design", I suppose Peanuts and many comics are too "?loli?" for some.
The design is faithful to the manga design and it's been pointed out that only three characters (Kona, her mom, and Yutaka) are actualy "loli" as commonly defined.
There are much better parodies show out there.
If you viewed it as simply a parody show and nothing more, I completely understand why you didn't like L*S. Despite the number of references (excluding the large amount of non-anime references; many of those were pointed out by AVPlaya), I'd like to think it was more than that... but to each his or her own.
I put it perfect ten =)

Speaking of loli, i don't really think Lucky Star should be labelled simply because of its character designs. It's one of the cleanest late night anime you can find out there, virtually no what so-called fanservice and panty shots. It's pure fun and full of cultural references.

Well, okay... I guess then we can't see why didn't you like it with your choices of anime either... which we already established. :heh:
Anyway, I am not going to reply to the next one (if there is one). We went a bit off-topic. :heh:
This series really isn't for me, nor should it be for those outside of japan, as we really cannot relate to such things, it's the same as being a person who laughs at jokes they don't catch.
there are so many things in Lucky Star that the characters do/say that cross language/cultural barriers that most of us also do in our day to day lives, and can relate to very easily, (Miyuki's fear of the dentist, Konata not liking sports because it screws up her tv schedule, Tsukasa's absent-mindedness, Konata's study habits, etc) so if failed to get a single joke in L*S, you probably never leave your house

They were more of slice-of-life moments.
Some of the parts I laughed at were Tsukasa's one-shotter lines like 'shigo ga ooitte iwareruyo, demo sonnano kankei nei!' and other archaic/off-radar sayings. They weren't confined to just Tsukasa, but she tended to fire them off most often. That's why it seems she doesn't tend to be very popular over here, at least compared to Konata and Kagami who has a more global appeal, yet Tsukasa is pretty high in the otaku charts in Japan.
It's kind of awkward because none of my friends laugh and I'm rolling on the floor or worse the first time.

If one condemned Lucky Star for having pedophiliac characters, he/she would have a big problem with watching nowadays anime (as much as Lucky Star did it to a stronger extent). I really don't like this crappy tendency, not did I, however, mind lucky star in the least because it didn't come off a lolita-oriented one for some reason.
I'm pretty sure this series would be a lot less interesting if it weren't for this design, and that's the main reason why I'm totally indifferent to the original manga universe, or some products.
My rate is a 7/10 (if I didn't hate any lucky channel or Shiraishi sequence, it's an 8).

It's genre interests. If you aren't interested in these kind of things, it won't appeal to you. If I didn't like the genre that you liked, the anime that you like wouldn't appeal to me.
We just need to compare this to something you like. For instance, if I said that it doesn't make sense that you like the certain anime you liked, you'd be offended. It made sense to you, but here's some random person saying that you don't make sense and that this anime isn't good, because that person doesn't see anything good in the anime. Some of us find this anime appealing, and some of us don't, but someone calling one side illogical because they don't conform to that person's interests is, in my opinion, incoherent.
So go ahead and list an anime that you like. For demonstration purposes, I'll show you what you're saying.
Edit: As for the anime that you thought were better than Lucky Star, as I said before, it was a matter of opinion.
For example, Hayate no Gotoku is boring due to all the forced comedy in it. It strains to make people laugh, yet I only chuckle at one thing per episode, if at all. The characters are so predictable, especially from J.C.Staff. The tsundere, the overly complacent agreeable character, the smart background character, among other things. There's nothing actually going on in that anime but a random collection of ideas that don't string together. If you like it, you don't make any sense and are completely illogical.
Of course, this may or may not be my opinion about the anime, but I want you to understand that that's what you're saying. Some people may like the randomness of Hayate no Gotoku, but some might not. Some might like the characters [I do, but that's beside the point], and some might not. But calling someone illogical because they don't agree with you is illogical in itself because preference is so subjective.
Edit: I can't believe I typed this much [it's a lot for me!] about this.
My before and after feelings of the series: Unique animation style may put some off, but has it's own merit. Plot and script will draw comparisons to Azumanga Daioh, but Lucky Star, ends up with it's own sort of feel. Female, hardcore Otaku seems to be the basis of the Anime, but ends up starring two characters.
Lucky Star ended up being a very enjoyable series. The themes and characters are unique but ordinary at the same time. Lucky Star is generally going to be what you expect it to be, but your reaction to it may be different than what you expect.
The Animation - The animation irked me at first, but after watching an episode and getting used to the colors and style, I think the animation is one of Lucky Stars' strongest points.
When I first looked at some pictures of LS, like other users have pointed out, I thought the characters looked too loli for High School age. Even while rewatching LS, the thought goes through my mind that these characters could pass as elementary girls in just about any other anime. I think a lot of people, like me, learned about LS while they were looking for a new anime to watch after Haruhi. The different style of animation (In addition to the character descriptions) put me off from watching an episode for some time. The characters look much more their age outside of scenes where they are sitting down or are talking heads. The style is not the norm, but it's different and unique, like the series itself. And I think the style fits the series perfectly. After completing the series, I wouldn't have LS animated any other way, besides it makes Anime Tenchou seem even stranger than he already is.
Overall Story/Characters - The plot didn't scream to me that I had to watch the series or even an episode right away, I'm a bit of an Otaku myself, and the character description of Konata, made me feel like I'd be watching myself(I wasn't wrong about that either) But it was a lot more enjoyable than I had expected, Kagami was a surprise for me, I thought she was just going to be part of the background and the punch line for Konata's jokes. However, If you flip through some of the episodes, it's hard to find two scenes that don't feature Kagami, Konata or both. When I was reading the character descriptions before watching the show, Konata seemed to be the "Mascot" character, and that the anime would revolve around her. The overall story, was around what I expected it to be, but my reactions were different. Most scenes gave me a small chuckle and had me thinking how close to home these characters were, the series was a lot more "charming" than I thought it would be.
To be honest, I laughed harder when I was watching AzuDa, but AzuDa lacked emotionally. I thought LS would be very alike to AzuDa, but somehow it was able to put something together for me in the emotional department. For me, I think it was how they had developed Kagami's sense of character, in AzuDa, I had the feeling that the characters were all stereotyped, and that you could always expect a certain character to act a certain way. Kagami, would get distraught over gaining weight, she'd be aloof when she got the love letter, and she'd get angry when her sisters blamed her for not getting groceries. LS did a good job of showing her emotions and bringing the viewer along for the ride and getting the viewr to emphathize with the characters, at least I thought so when I was watching.
For the series, I liked the episodes where they focused on one theme and didn't jump around too much. Episodes, focused only at the beach, only at comiket, only at the school trip, were more memorable episodes. When the show jumped around from place to place, you lose a sense of what that episode was about.(Though, the episodes that jump around are the best to rewatch I find.)
What the show meant to you. - To me, the show was about having fun and laughing things off, but, Kagami has put a bit of scare into me on my own study habits and future.(I should be studying right now :eyebrow:)
What could the creators/animators/writers could have done better. - I would have enjoyed the series much more if they had started putting in those 5 minute serious scenes in each episode earlier on. 5 minutes isn't too bad, you still have plenty of time for joke sequences. If I had known about Konata's Parents' pasts earlier, I would have felt I was more into the show for the rest of the episodes. It wasn't until watching some of these heartfelt scenes at the end, that I really wanted to watch the next episode of LS.
Lucky Channel/Karaoke- I only became a fan of lucky channel and the karaoke after episode 14. With Akira showing her bad side the entire episode of lucky channel, that really got me laughing. The Hare Hare Yukai performance with Shiraishi got me laughing even harder. All in all, I think Lucky Star would have been better off with more skits than the Lucky Channel segment. The Karaoke part is nice, I watched through the credits for each episode at least once, which more than I could say if it was just the same ending everytime.
Animation Quality: 10(Colorful, consistent, pretty.)
Voice Actors: 10 (I haven't heard better.)
Script: 9 (Good script, fits the characters well, plays well with their personalities)
Editing: 9 (I didn't see anything offensive or uninteresting.)
Emotional Involvement: 8 (It's a comedy, but they've shown they can put in some of this too, I'd like to see more.)
Overall: 9

L*S (for me) is more of a show that's nothing that is about everything. Ok as other posters have said.. some people will be turned off by the character design, (I guess its more of an acquired taste) but still it features things from our daily lives, that in a way gives the non-otaku a chance to relate to the jokes.
7/10
Interesting references.
Wacky intro, interesting.
[Yup that pretty much sums up my toughs]
This show was definately not a work of genius, in my opinion. I'd rather see Haruhi that Lucky Star, even though I've heard that they were so similar. However, this show was perfect as a light show. It was the kind of show to me to watch when I had a spare moment and needed something to do. It was light hearted enough to watch on that kind of a basis.
I loved a few of the references...
Akira: "You're not a crow."
Daisuke: "And you're not a dog."
And Tsukasa definately won my heart after a few episodes and easily became my favorite charecter. So cute and delicate!
Overally, not really as bad of a series as I thought it was going to be after seeing the first episode a few months ago and not bothering to continue past there. But still, it's nothing I'd rewatch.
6/10
Track down whomever told you "Haruhi" was "so similar" to Lucky*Star and beat them even more senseless than they apparently were. The two series are not even the same genre...
It'd be like comparing Stargate to Monty Python's Flying Circus???

Animation Quality: 9/10 - The motions of the characters are fluid, and it just feels like the animation is clean from the get go. The art, the direction, and the way Kyoto Animation did this series reflects their work of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and its formula can be adjusted for any series that they work on. The art matches the emotions, the storylines, and the thoughts. Altogether, in spite of a need for a little more detail, it is another solid KyoAni effort.
Voice Actors: 10/10 - Amazing!
Script: 7/10 - The story plot, which is weak, is strengthened with the characters, who reflect different personalities and persuasions. It's a good balance
Editing: 8/10
Emotional Involvement: 10/10 - Absolutely loved it!!
Average: 8.8/10 --> 10/10

Would they make a S2?
There's no reason they couldn't once enough new manga material was generated... the manga is covering the girls last year in high school so the "new gang" would have to be the main focus of the second series. The Original Gang could make frequent appearances though as they enter college or the work force.
It just depends on the persistence of the buzz and interest in the comic and the related merchandise. I'm going to give it less than 50% though because of past observation of the anime industry. They just don't often tend to do things like that and when they do, it frequently falls flat.

i would much rather them not do a second season at all then change the focus Lucky Star to a different group of characters--that would be nothing more than a spinoff
Lucky Star is what it is because of the main characters--these are the main characters we got used to, and got to know the most--it is about them, not about the high school they go to
if there is a season two (which i do hope there is), there is absolutely no reason at all not to simply follow the main characters to college

I think it'll be strange to see them in college though. What makes Lucky Star so interesting is that other than seeing them deal with regular life obstacles, it is also that they had so much time to spend drifting around. :heh:
That and seeing as college is basically the entrance to the adult world... I don't want to see them being adult-fied. It is their innocent that also keep the series interesting. Their discussions about things they don't know and certain things like that. :p
A college setting following the 'original four' only makes sense if:
1) the manga 4-koma stories head that way or
2) the anime becomes an "anime-only" setting (which sometimes doesn't pan out well).
JustInn14

... "Original Four"... Isn't this series a bit too new to decide which characters are classic? :heh:
??? It isn't a question of which characters are "classic" ... for a great deal of the first pack of 4-koma (and the anime) there are 4 primary characters: Kona, Kagami, Tsubasa, and Miyuki. The 'original four' to appear in the manga/anime ... all the other characters appear on stage later (though several of them assume positions at least as central depending on what muse leads the mangaka onward).
What is happening in the manga is that the focus has been shifting from the those four to the newer characters but it basically gives the mangaka more characters to juggle.

I haven't seen all of it yet, I've just finished episode 17. The intro is funny, kinda wierd, the series itself is pretty awesome, cool references.
It's a very Seinfieldian show, but it's a lot more funny than Seinfield... imho. :P
It's a very background show, imho. It's not something I can stare at and watch continually, unless I'm seeing the episodes for the first time. It's more something I can leave on in the background while I'm doing something else, look up, smirk a bit or roll of the floor because of a Konata comment, and get back to whatever I'm doing.
That said, it is a brilliant piece of work.
8/10
Almost fell asleep during the first episode. After the first few, I couldn't get enough. I found it amazing how much I could relate to Konata Izumi.

I gave this series a 10. Sure there are a lot of things which aren't as great about it, but it just is my kind of anime. I love the randomness, but at the same time the normal...ness(?) of it. The jokes just do it for me and so do the animations. The characters are just so recognizable (for me that is). I just love to watch this anime laid back and enjoying the jokes and punch lines.
I gave it 7/10, good. It was good while it lasted and I enjoyed Akira's scenes the most.

So, can we please sit down and focus on the thread's topic? This place is meant to review and eviscerate Lucky Star, if you wish you might do speculations on how you wish a season 2 would be, but for Heaven's sake, please don't state the presence of a Season 2 as a certain fact.
In absence of factual elements stating it, said rumour is just going to spread misinformation at the moment. If there will be a Season 2, we'll certainly learn about it, for the time being please let's be cautious about what we say. It's just common sense, guys (other than being off topic as I was stating above). I deleted a bunch of unnecessary posts, and here's a quote of three of them which perfectly sum up the status quo as of today, january 26th.
Would they make a S2?

Hi All!
Well, hope I don't get spanked for posting this here, but to me it kind of fits into the Lucky Star postmortem soberness among some here. But perk up! Soon we might be treated to a new fresh crop of resurrected anime that doesn't have to heed a 'season 2'!
Here in Boulder my relative once ago gave me a corporate peek into what could also spin-off a future in "hijacked" discontinued/orphaned anime by using what I'll loosely call 'extrapolated positioning'. It's not 'morphing' though the technique's related, where you scan into a computer all the poses and positions and gestures of an animated character even off video then use a mouse or drawing pencil to guide the character through its paces and the computer extrapolates the right pose for the desired effect and drawing style.
What I saw were just mono-colored outline-like characters but their interactions were kind of cool (though I didn't really appreciate just how much at the time.) Like say you want your character to walk across a room, and the extrapolation follows your mouse with its own customized character stride. The characters eyes can always track another and you can make their limbs contact at certain speeds and they 'gesture' and react in kind and super-synchs with any language . Right now it's way way too slow to create on PCs, but that'll pass and my relative says there'd be no reason why you can't easily create anime-grade images (hinted that'd be a cinch if your goal's high-quality Disney-grade work). Using the example of fan-dubbed anime to build on, the day may come in which there are internet Lucky Star anime 'clones' virtually indistinguishable from the real thing created by non-profit hard-core anime pirate 'houses' of hyper-fan artists who'll have their own critical fandom base much the same Kyoto Animations does. (like Star Trek fans had fan industry things going along these lines in old pre-web days).
I really look forward to that happening even if artists studios wouldn't naturally! Diversity in art and expression's always a good thing! What's really far out is my relative hinted that what they're doing for images, someone somewhere else might well be doing for speech. These are going to be very interesting coming years!!

I gave this series a 10. I love slice of life anime and this is my type of show. I do hope for a season 2 because there are ISSUES that I want to see solved...... *cough* Kagami *cough*. Uh, I love how I was able to relate to the characters that always helps and this series was very fun to watch. I really want a second season or some OVAS at least though.
Well - it's my second favourite anime - so I think it's very good. It's pitful for me, when some ppl think Minami-ke is better than LS (gosh - it is similar, but much worse)...
Animation Quality: 7/10
Characters: 9++/10 (Akira...)
Voice Actors: 9++/10 (Akira once again)
Script: 9/10

Emotional Involvement: 9/10
Overall: 9+/10 (more to 10 than 9)
And also i make my choise on almost all polls on anime reactor for LS (else Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo, but we are not talking about TwKS) as the best TV series year 2007...

ahh, it's been a few months since i've seen this anime, but recently i've been thinking about some of the live action episode endings. that guy singing hit anime songs was hilarious; i think he was the voice actor of the guy in lucky channel, and the girl was the voice actor of the girl in lucky channel, maybe? ahh, funny stuff.
You would be correct. Both are the voice actors for the two characters portrayed in Lucky*Channel.
I recently finished Lucky Star and I enjoyed it. I was a fan of Azumanga and heard this was similar so I decided to check it out. One of my friends didn't like it because it got hyped too much so I kept my expectations reasonably low.
Tbh, a lot of the pleasure I got out of this show was the interaction between Konata and Kagami. Then again I'm partial to tsundere. Besides that there were a lot of amusing moments and some truly brilliant ones (Initial D parody). The show gave me a relaxed feeling reminiscent of Azumanga.
One of my complaints is that I think it leans a little heavily on anime/Jp "insider" jokes. Even though I consider myself decently aware of anime and JP culture, I found myself looking up a lot of stuff. It gave me a new appreciation for those scenes the second time around, but I was staring blankly a decent amount the first time around.
Additionally, I wish they developed some of the other characters a bit more. I know it's based off of the 4-koma, but I would've liked to seen more substantial scenes with Misao, Miyuki, etc. Lastly, Lucky Channel got old rather quickly...although Shiraishi saved it imo.
Personal enjoyment: 9/10
Overall rating: 8/10
That's the unfortunate part... there really *is* a lot of material for all the characters... (five volumes of 4-koma collections) but the Lucky Channel segment, while initially funny, became mostly a time budget boat anchor that reduced airtime for many characters.
The anime/jp insider jokes are almost completely anime-only. While they were often funny, I think it will lead to disappointment for people who go on to read the manga expecting those "jokes".
Azumanga Lite And Updated wouldn't be a bad description and yes, the interactions between Kagami and Konata are supreme -- but then *all* the characters have delicious moments in the manga 4-koma that weren't animated.
I've only started to read the 4-koma after watching the series much like I did with Azu and I haven't gotten far yet. I've found that it's usually best to watch the anime then read the manga/light novel since reading the original material first usually ruins my enjoyment of the series. It happened to me with Love Hina and I couldn't watch Negima either.

Animation Quality: 8.
Meh, no faults. But nothing spectacular in HD either. Obviously, just 4 girls talking isn't going to require some hard animation work.
Voice Actors: 10
Quite a few seiyuu's have real talent. Aya, how did you even get that Konata voice? It's so different from anything else you've ever voiced. Misao's voice was laughter the moment I heard it. I can keep this going for every other character.
Script: 8.5 rounded up to 9
Random conversations made by ordinary high school girls. Jokes are varying in funniness but some just could make you die with laughter. However, it is not easy making some pretty nice script from nothing but the fact that 4 high school girls are talking to each other.
Editing: 6
I guess. Is this even applicable? Does an anime with just girls talking to each other require extensive editing? I guess this could get a 6 for a lack of editing.
Emotional Involvement: 9
I got hooked. Period. I have actually learnt a lot about Japanese culture and people through this anime. It is rare to see anime characters that come close to actually exsisting. Although I feel somethings are missing... (more Konami moments, more Hiyori's yuri vision, etc.), I feel satisfied by the end. Most good moments sent me to the floor in laughter, I didn't expect the tear jerker that came with Kanata's appearance.
Overall score: 10, I am biased and this is not an average. This was just the score I had to give to one of my favourite anime of all time.
I don't think there would be a second season soon. (With KyoAni occupied with more Haruhi and more Clannad) I still keep my hopes high and pray for another. It obviously couldn't be a direct continuation of the girl's lives in college. However, there's plenty of time for future episodes to fill in all three of the girl's years. I'll keep myself occupied with KyoAni's current awsome works.

Animation Quality: 8
Simply put, the animation does not have to be great or whatnot, it just has to fit what the show is trying to portray. Overall, the animation style isn't overly detailed, but I believe that is the way it should be. It just feels...fitting, especially with all of the colors involved.:heh:
Voice Actors: 10
Spot on. The voice actors made their respective characters feel alive. What more can I ask for?
Script: 8
Not perfect, but it was a fun ride. When I looked at comments on the first few episodes, I was surprised, but I will agree it got better around episodes 5 & 6.
Editing: 9
Was fine, as far as I can tell. However, like with Higurashi and Claymore, there is not much I can say about it.
Emotional Involvement: 10
When sheer hilarity fits with other everyday emotions, you know something is being done right. I especially want to point to the episode (episode 20 or 21, I think) where we were greeted by Kanata's spiritual presence. That entire scene was touching, but funny at the same time. I love a series that can do something like that.
Overall, I enjoyed the ride with Konata, Kagami, Tsukasa, and Miyuki. From the little bits of it I saw in AMV Hell IV, I had a feeling I would enjoy it. I did, immensely. I now await the US DVD release. Lucky Star will be the first series I will follow through DVD release. Sure, I've bought anime DVDs in the past (Escaflowne, Lodoss, and Outlaw Star), but this will be the first time I will follow the series as it is released.:)
Overall, 9 out of 10.
PS.
-Once again, I can relate to Kuroi-sensei. Apparently, I was auto-logged out and I hit submit. Boy, glad my message was still here or I'd be in bed with tears.:heh:
Gets a solid 8/10 from me.
Animation Quality - 7/10
As expected from Kyoto Animation, consistency is absolute and whilst the show has simplistic artwork it still looks great. There are a few scenes which are downright beautiful though, but Lucky Star as a source material does not give much potential to mind-blowing art, at least in comparison to Kanon/Air/Clannad.
Voice Actors - 10/10
I don't think I need to elaborate on this one. I hope the VAs had a blast with this one.
Script - 8/10
Some episodes were perfectly written, others not so much. However, I was thoroughly entertained by most of them which is rare, since I often avoid episodic shows.
Emotional Involvement - 8/10
This is tough, although I didn't shed tears or became empathetic etc, I still loved nearly all of the characters. The soft moments with Konata's family and the Konata-Kagami friendship were great, and I wish those two would express their love for each other (as friends of course) properly!
I totally did not mind the Kyoto Animation-produced anime placement and jokes! As someone who enjoys all of Kyoani's work, this is natural I suppose. Overall, I love Lucky Star and nearly all of its characters.

General impression of the series:
At first I thought this anime would be a whole lota fan service I wouldn't get and in general an average anime which I wouldn't see to the end.
I couldn't have been more wrong , every episode I was impressed with the sheer randomness of the script , in fact the dialogue was so pointless ( eg. talking about food for the first 5 min of the 1st ep or somet) , but it managed to keep me entertained for the full 20 min episode every time. The show also hit the nail on the head when it tackled the series aspects such as how life with your siblings can be rough or talking about a dead relative - not too much of this thank the lord but the tiny amount made for a nice break from the random humour.
Thoughts about the animation quality.
Excellent backgrounds and item animation , however poor character animations - thought they were too childish IMO but not too bad.
What could the creators/animators/writers could have done better :
Hmm , well the character design could have been a little less simple. Something I would definitely improve was the ending which was too short ( they should have gone for a 30 min last eppy like with FMP TSR ) and I feel it left a hole where there should have been a far more heartwarming and satisfying ending.
Animation Quality: 8 - didn't like the character design too much
Voice Actors: 9 - fitted the characters well , even with the dub the voices weren't bad.
Script: 1 - twas random lol but I loved it ( thus the 1 for script content :D)
Emotional Involvement: 8 - I wanted each character to have a happy ending :) and smiled at certain bits which were similar to what I have experianced in RL.
Overall= 8 - I would give it 10 but I have seen more in depth story lines which lucky Star certainly lacked. The anime was almost like FMP fumoffu with every episode being unrelated.

Here's what I think ~ !
Animation Quality: 9/10 - I think this show, despite not having a lot of movement in it, exceeded expetations for this style of show as far as the quality and fluid look of the animation. It could have easily gotten away with lower-quality animation, but KyoAni went above and beyond with this one. The color scheme of the entire show is bright, fun, and cute, which fits the show's feel and style perfectly. I have nothing bad to say about the animation except that sometimes the conversation scenes streched out with looped mouth-flap animation and could look boring and lost my interest occasionally.
Characters: 7/10 - Most of the main characteres in this show are undeniably steryotypes and do limit the show somewhat with the sort of predictable reactions (this is one reason that Kagamin wasn't my favorite) and stylized voices and such. But Lucky Star isn't trying to hide this, so the cliche-ness of it works out well in the end. It's not irritating like so many other cookie-cutter moe or tsundere character-centric anime. And Konata is such a unique and fun person to watch that she shines out above all of the rest ~ ! She brings up the score a lot.
Voice Actors: 10/10 - I thought the voice actors and actresses each defined their character perfectly, which has made it even harder to transfer to the English dub because of how much the Japanese version has stuck with me. Konata and Kagami's voices definetly stand out in my mind as the best, allthough Shiraishi, Akira, and of course Misao are also very memorable.
Script: 9/10 - I loved the humor of this show. It was laid-back, clever, subtle, and at times, did a good job of appealing to hard-core fans and otaku and made Lucky Star more enduring to me. They did tend to repeat the same types of jokes sometimes, but it was not overdone and only served as a motif that you could enjoy more than one time.
Emotional Involvement: 5/10 - This is one aspect of the show that was pretty much ignored with a few exceptions - the Izumi family scenes, showing Kanata and her husband's relationship and her watching over them, the concert scene where Kagami gives Konata her seat because she can't see well (although, I think that was a reference to something else anyway...), and when Kagami gets the "love" note in her bag. Those few times were done very very well, but there were so few that I think it's an exaggeration to call this a prominant (or even existant) element of Lucky Star.
Overall: 8/10 (I added up all of the scores from above and divided by number of categories, so this isn't a seperate review but a summary of what I said up there).
I hope you enjoyed Phishn37's review of Lucky Star! This is my favorite anime, so I did love it a lot!

I'm not going to continuously ramble about the show, but I do think that it has brought a lot of fond memories to a lot of people. I mean, imagine a good AnimeCon without the Lucky Star Dance? Or the Haruhi Dance, for The Melancholy wouldn't have been created if Lucky Star wasn't there to introduce Haruhi.

Well, since this is NOT an anime-only poll, I rated both the manga and the anime together.
9/10, simply because I don't believe in giving perfect scores, and I had been dying to understand the drama CD, which, apart from Konata (and possibly Miyuki), has a cast so stellar, I can hardly wish for a better cast.
At first, thanks Kyoto again for this amazing work again. I like Lucky Star and can't wait for the OVA. And this is one of my favourite anime ever. So :
Animation Quality: 10/10. Not a lot of movements but a lot of amazing-quilty animation. This is Kyoto.
Characters: 9. Maybe, some of them are stereotypes, but, just try to find some characters like Konata, aha. They are only stereotypes in a common sight, but if you will dig a bit harder, then... Say, isn't Konata reminds yourself a bit ? And some characters are also my favourites like Kagami and Konata.
Voice Actors: 10. Yes, it's a perfect 10. Amazing work.
Script: 10. Amazing, original scenario is coming from 4koma. And this stories are funny enough to enjoy them fully.
Emotional Involvement: 8. Well, this isn't the same level as in Kanon, but the moment, for example, with Izumi family was sad.
And my overall rating (i will not count it like average from script, adaption ratings and so on) will be 9. Real perfect 10 for me, for example, is Kanon and Clanad, if you're interested. I like Lucky Star very much and I'm really waiting for OVA.
Kyoto, thanks again for this amazing work. Keep going.
lol i absolutely loved Lucky Star. Konoha's dad reminds me of me lol. but anyway i think everything was good. Random is good :D (friend disagrees) :p

Way too many of you are biased. there is NO way this show deserves a 9 or 10.
I also would not be calling this 'slice of life' which most of you seem to be doing. people are abusing that term lately just like the word tsundere. I bet Minoru has something to say about this as well!
Why should anyone use your rating standards instead of their own?
Also, what's a correct slice of life archetype and how does this show not fit into it?
Thanks.

I'd rate this series 8/10. It's not as good as Azumanga Daioh, and I'm not even quite sure what it is I actually like about it, but it's still a fairly entertaining series. Though, this and FMP? Fumoffu are also the only KyoAni-shows I've seen that I'd rate lower than 9. (And I believe I've seen them all, except Kanon 2006, which I'm planning on watching as soon as I can find time to get the DVDs.)
Well..... its kind of a "the sometimes comedic daily events in the lives of...". Many people lately shorthand that to "slice of life".
Because of the 4-koma heritage of Lucky*Star, it has a "setup gag, execute, aftermath" skit quality to it. I keep comparing it to the American strip Peanuts because both contain many statements on the "human condition". The anime series injected a lot of extra pop references that muddied those waters though.
So one could say its in the overlapping circles of "slice of life" and just pure "comedy sketch" arenas -- lets face it, genre tagging is over-rated. :)

No one is asking you to use my rating system but people are required to use common sense while posting.
when you say something like, "I was bored and wanted to skip the first five minutes" and in the next line, "Konata is my perfect girl this show gets a 10!" it does indeed give society the right to question your intellect.
I am not saying this is a bad show, I liked it very much. but the majority of the casual viewers will not understand a single thing thats being discussed making this a very niche anime.
and since I know you are curious, the answer is No. just because a pretty girl is in a video game does not make it a visual novel.

If you're rating a show you like, of course you are going to be biased. You can't give a show a good rating without being biased ~ ! And some people find things they love about certain shows that no one else sees, so if one person hates a show, someone else might see something totally different in it that makes them like it a whole lot.

I don't know how the bold part applies for me. I don't go berserk in my spending on anime-related stuff, I don't play ero games, but I can understand Konata's feelings on these two. Visual novels? Yeah, the day I start on them is the day I get a DS and understand Japanese.

I think potatochobit is just annoyed how people gave scores that seem unjustified compared to the rest of their posts and thoughts - it's very true that your reviews become invalid when you hand out 10's simply because you feel exhilarated at the moment. I'll grant that he's being too stingy about it, and there's little anyone could do (that saves them from looking pretentious) to influence the noise vs. content ratio in any given online discussion.
That and this is a poll on a public internet forum with little supervision. If you regard any of the reviews here (or the poll results) seriously, you're crazy.

I agree on the latter and personally the former, but not that people shouldn't have a right to vote 9 or 10 if they want to. Slice of Life is an abused term though I think. There's nothing about Lucky Star that I can really say is at all like life. It's more like an Otaku's fantasy of what life could be like (flat chested girls like Konata sharing their interests, Yuri tension between girls, ultra smart but also hopelessly clutzy girls like Miyuki....and the list goes on) and the funny thing is that if characters like Konata existed in real life then there would be no need for Lucky Star to even exist.
To me Slice of Life is like a vignette of somebody's everyday activities that should hopefully have the effect of allowing us to greater examine our own existence in some way by the end. The movie Ghost World (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_World_(film)) is a pretty good example I think.
Also it doesn't take much for people to grant shows a ten these days. Basically as long as a series hits at least one point with somebody's particular fetish then it's getting a ten......no questions. That's something I desperately try to avoid when I do my reviews. Before I even think about the score I have to look over everything and how it all came together. I have a full length review from my early days of blogging before I refined my style that I only ever posted a link to before, but here it is in full:
The Bad:
Overkill Haruhi References:
I felt like screaming, “Look I don’t care that much about Haruhi, stop thinking I do”, at the screen sometimes. This could have been toned down a lot to give more time to Lucky Star.
Some Animation Glitches:
Many minor ones I noticed where lip syncing was off more than normal, the line between objects transitioned awkardly, one of Konata that looked like a photoshop, and one that was actually hilarious where Konata looked like she had a Monoeye like a Zeon Mobile Suit. It just wasn’t at an acceptable level for an animation production of high expectations.
Uninspired Music:
Look I love my Casio too, but I don’t like to play it everyday. A little more variety in BGM would have done a lot for the scenes. And as much as Sailor Fuku was fun the first couple times, but it got annoying after just a few listens. That was THE big vocal song for the series, and not liking it was not a good thing. The Karaoke could also be inconsistant as well, it was supposed to be the characters singing, but sometimes you get the sense that the voice actors were being given priority for certain “Special” songs, and it just killed the goofiness of it to suddenly hear Aya Hirano’s voice instead of Konata giving what sounded more like a Studio produced version of Sorega Ai Deshou, than a goofy little Otaku’s Karaoke house rendition. The Minoru stuff was just weird and I didn’t care to much for it, but he sure as hell was funny and had a great personality. I wouldn’t mind having a drink with the guy.
Lucky Channel:
Man, the joke ran it’s course around the 5th episode and the guests weren’t all that interesting or surprising (I prefer The Daily Show), save for Goto Yuko and her badass bike. I wish that this could have been scrapped during production meetings and that we just could have spent more time with the actual Lucky Star characters. That’s the biggest complaint of all I have. It’s like if I went into a Movie theatre to see something, and suddenly the management decides that the movie trailers that were airing before the movie were going to be counted towards the time you paid for to see the movie, and the Feature Presentation would have to be reedited to compensate for them. It wasn’t cool is what I’m saying
Now The Good:
The Characters:
Who couldn’t honestly say they weren’t amused by the quirky Konata Izumi, her obsession over video games and Japanese Animation, she feels a little close to home, and she’s cute to boot. What about Kagami and her tendency to “fix” the conversation before things got out of hand, her battles of wits with Konata, her Ide Sweatdrop, her love for her sister and all those other things. What about Tsukasa and her overkilled cutesiness (to the point where I think she was a parody of Moe it’s self), and Miyuki and her speeches (index finger up), her tendency to bump into objects, her…..pinkness. And of course there was Yutaka, Minami and them as well who brought up the flat chest brigade and Patty and her misconceptions about what Japanese culture was like. All these characters were extremely simple, but that was what allowed them to be played off one another to tell the 4Koma style jokes. That’s the essence of Lucky Star and it was pulled off very well. Had we seen more of the characters and jokes based on them, and less of some other things this series could have probably scratched the 8/10 barrier for me.
The References To Japanese Pop Culture:
I liked this style of setting. Learning about a culture and/or reinforcing your knowledge about it is NEVER a bad thing. I learned a bit about how the Japanese family and group of friends functions during such important times as dinner, after dinner TV viewing, public outings and more. I also think the show parodied the rather absurd idea that if you are a cute little girl, everywhere you go outside, somebody is going to try to hop out and take a picture of you, or get a good look up or down your Sailor Fuku.
The Frequent Bizareness Of It All:
Lucky Star could be just plain strange sometimes and that’s always a good thing. It wasn’t SD Gundam level strange, but it was enough that it could give me something to talk about to others or make a not of while watching.
And That’s the reason behind my rating. Would I watch it again, probably not, but I’m at least satisfied I gave it a chance. Now what is the final rating people might ask if they made it this far, well here it is at last.
Final Series Rating: Six And A Half Out Of Ten
Are you looking for something more like that from people? From my perspective looking back at it it seems pretty awful. I could have done a lot better.

Also, what's a correct slice of life archetype and how does this show not fit into it?
No one knows how to define slice of life because it's too new a genre, but this is how I see it:
The point of this genre is not that it depicts real life (that would include a crapload of unrelated series). Some genres put the focus on characters, others on plot progression, but slice of life shows put the focus on the setting. Thus, you can have series with sci fi elements (Planetes, ARIA) or supernatural (Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto) that do represent the epytome of slice of life quite well. ARIA, for example, was the perfect example every SoL series had to aspire to until Hal Film Maker's adaptation of Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto hit the air this month, taking that spot... and none of those shows realistically depict day-to-day life (ARIA has sci fi and supernatural elements, Mahou Tsukai is partly supernatural).
Because of the 4-koma heritage of Lucky*Star, it has a "setup gag, execute, aftermath" skit quality to it.
Now, Lucky Star, as Vexx puts it, was nothing more than a random collection of gags without too much cohesion to them. However, the 4-koma heritage is not determinant to the outcome, as Azumanga Daioh already proved it--that series managed to turn random 4-koma gags into a cohesive progression that, ultimately, had an important focus on the setting (though it was more focused on the characters, of course). Kyoani, though, did not achieve that... perhaps they didn't want to, or perhaps the source material was too constrictive, who knows. But that's my reason not to consider LS a SoL series. Not once I saw a scene that made me feel at inner peace, relaxing and enjoying the stillness of the setting.
If you want to see what really is a slice of life show taken to the extreme, watch this season's Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto ~ Natsu no Sora. Of course, since it's the extreme depiction of a genre, it will turn a lot of people off--but at least it will help you get an idea of what I consider slice of life to be.
Other good series:
- ARIA is another strong SoL title, though not as extreme as MTnTnK.
- Azumanga Daioh is a classic series, and everyone should watch it, at least for the comedy side.
- Ichigo Mashimaro, besides being one of the best directed comedies ever known to man with possibly the best ensemble seiyuu cast ever to grace an anime production, is also a great example of slice of life mixed with character-interaction based comedy.
- I haven't watched Planetes, but I hear from good sources that its slice of life side is quite strong. And it's sci fi.
- Other drama-based series like Haibane Renmei and Honey & Clover have pretty noticeable slice of life elements, though it's not their focus.
It's an anime show about girls. Why should all posters have a complete thesis with sound argument in stunning eloquence prepared for every single posts for such a topic?
I believe that's the point of analyzing art, right? After all, the Sistine Chapel is just a church.
I believe that's the point of analyzing art, right? After all, the Sistine Chapel is just a church. Why should all posters have a complete thesis...
If someone wants to write theses on things like Lucky Star or Spongebob Squarepants, I can't say I give a dam. They probably should stick to writing theses on anime instead of the Sistine Chapel, for everyone's sake. But if they feel as though everyone else should do the same, I'm gonna raise eyebrows.

Oops, for a second there I thought we were on a forum for anime fans.
We're not judging how this series appeals to casual viewers. We're judging it on how it appealed to us. When I judge a series, I do have a rather simplistic view on it. Did it entertain me or not? This one did, immensely so. It was funny, cute, made me happy when I felt down, and had what I found to be very memorable characters. Those are all things that I personally look for in a series, so I will give it a 9/10 if I damn well please. This doesn't mean that my opinion counts any less than yours, or that I am on any lower plane of enlightenment than you are. :P
It means I liked Lucky Star more than you did, and no, that doesn't give "society" a right to question my intellect.

Animation Quality: 7
I guess you could call it, good when it wants to be.
Voice Actors: 9
This goes for both English and Japanese versions. EXCELLENT voice acting.
Script: 6
The first five episodes or so are extremely boring, but it gets better as the show goes on. It just takes too long to get going, and most of the minor characters of the show don't get introduced until past half way through the show leaving little room for them. :/
Editing: 7
Basically an animated comic strip. Not that that's a bad thing...
Emotional Involvement: 9
If you think about it, this show wouldn't be worth watching without Konata, but Konata is such a detailed and lovable character that it makes it MORE than worth watching.
Overall: 7
I actually really liked this anime!
I think a lot of people go into this expecting plot and story progression, and they are somewhat dissatisfied with what they find when there is none. Overall it's just a cutesy, funny, casual anime with a lot of references to geek culture. Speaking of which, I don't think I've ever seen so many references to other anime in one series! Even Initial D!
That said, in a lot of ways, Konata sort of makes this anime. But I liked all of the main characters by the end of the series. I'm even thinking about buying a little statuette of Tsukasa, she's awesome!
I thought the voice acting was excellent, and I just really enjoyed the over-emphasized quirkiness of the characters. I also like the chibi-style for the drawing, it just works for this type of anime.
Good stuff: 9/10 for me (I use that rating quite a bit, oh well, my post). It really is a character anime, one of those where you watch it because you love em so much. And who doesn't love that OP, eh?
People might take a look at Pani Poni Dash as well if they liked the somewhat plotless hilarity, inside jokes, cultural references and over-the-top zaniness.

Just finished watching this series last week, and I gave it a 9 out of 10 rating.
It got the -1 deduction for too much self-promotional references to Haruhi. Other than that, I think this series is great to watch, and on par with School Rumble.
Characters are very interesting and likable, especially Konata and Kagami.
I'm not a very good anime critic, I'm blown away by Lucky Star (like a lot of anime) so I gave it a 10.

As hard as I try, I just get turned off by the character design and general graphic aspect. Just too cute and chibi for my taste. The rest seems quite solid tho, tempted to give it another try...
Decided to watch some of volume 5 R1 DVD release tonight while taking a snack break.
I had forgotten just how mind-blowingly cute Misabi and Patty Martin were when they talked.
And how much Kagami reminds me of my significant other (which I love her for :) ).
I loved it
I just didn't like how it ended though
It was a bit bitter...
But every end has some bitterness in it...
And I hated that guy singing at the end, instead of Konata's crew singing...
He is the voice actor for Akira's sidekick in Lucky*Channel. I wasn't really fond of the amount of time budget Lucky*Channel took from the series. I didn't dislike L*C or the live-action tomfoolery - just that they didn't seem to know when they had beaten the "funny" to death. It would have been funnier with the entire voice acting cast hamming it up.

And the OVA just made my hunger for the 2nd series greater and greater. Too bad the chance for such a happening is...well, close to 0%, I think (concerning the original material).
Yeah, it was utter nonsense, has nothing to do with anime, well, its a sing of a character but broke all the cuteness :T_T:I beg to differ. It wasn't that bad. Of course, it got repetitive after some time, but so did the karaoke (for me, at least). Still, it was a success...I mean, in the most of situations, I watch the ending just once. And never again. This way, out of curiosity, I always looked at what Shiraishi had in plans each time...same for the songs, not like in other anime where I just skip the ending to the next episode.

This anime was definitely a win for me, 10/10 personally.
There were only two problems I had with the entire series, they could have gotten away with making it longer and Patty's voice was really annoying. In BOTH versions.
What really hooked me on the series was how cute it looked, all the humor, and the awesome references to anime and Japanese culture that I did or didn't know about. When Konata or another character mentioned or referenced an anime that I remember it either made me feel like a knew a lot... or that I have no life...
I've watch it so many times now (the last DVD's been out for only a day in English, this will tell you how sad I am) that I can listen to either audio and not look at the screen and remember precisely what is happening.

At first I really didn't like it that much because all they did was talk about food in the first episode, but eventually it got interesting and funny. I think they were just trying to introduce you to they're personalities in the first episode. Then all these other characters came and I loved it even more! (Konata is my favorite...I know loads of people say she they resemble her but I want to become more "Like" her...shes the top of the otaku scale baby!)
I also love Akira. Shes so fiesty! (And bratty...but thats why I love her XD)
Anyways, Lucky Star is amazing, has amazing art, characters, and dialogue and should be watched!

People might take a look at Pani Poni Dash as well if they liked the somewhat plotless hilarity, inside jokes, cultural references and over-the-top zaniness.
Hehe I love Pani Poni Dash ^_^
I've only watched the first 12 episodes, but I love it
Very VERY crazy, crazier than Azumanga Daioh...which is saying something :heh:

I'd say, it was a rather nice introduction, as NerdyOtaku mentioned. :p
Apart from that, it comes from the original 4-koma. They just animated it. :)
You are not alone. I liked the first ep, just because it was so...bizarre. Then I was hooked for the rest of it.Splendid. Now I can rest assured, that I'm not the only one thinking that way! :o
Didn't even know you watched Lucky Star, interesting.

Add a fair number of us. The first episode food conversation was straight from the 4-koma and intended as a take on the inane babble of daily life with a punch line that required an extended attention span.
Anyone familiar with the old vaudeville classics like a typical George Burns joke/story would definitely appreciate it. It was simply too different a form of humor for many forum posters... he would tell a story that lasted 4 or 5 minutes before the punch line, at some point the stretching itself became funny as it quietly built up to the finish.
Most people just do not know how to appreciate and there's nothing we can do about it since their brains are wired this way.

Am I the only one who thinks this series is total garbage?
4/10.
well, no -- there were 10 people who voted your score or less in the tally :)
But yeah, you're in the minority -- it might be more interesting to read if you could explain *why* you didn't enjoy it.

I know a guy who hates it for being overly cute (chibi overdose). No wonder when he's only watching Death Note, Monster and stuff like that. Maybe this is a similar case? :)

That would be my initial guess.... people who only watch violent action shounen or very grim stuff often get disoriented by "slice of life", comedy, romance, or other forms of anime :) Browsing his other posts though, he seems to like or at least knows a variety of genre including AzuDa. I've seen a fair number of people who like AzuDa but just didn't find anything to like about L*S, so it is more complex than "don't like slice'o'life" -- which is why I like to read what they think even if I disagree.
But yeah... posting something is fabulous or sucks without any supporting info - they have basically wasted their own time in posting and possibly just cratered their credibility :) ....
Speaking of people who don't like chibi art styles, I am usually one of these people. This show isn't the case for me, I loved it a lot. It really opened my eyes to not judging a show just by it's visual choices.
The first episodes I was a bit worried about the way it was going, it seemed that the jokes were limited, but it moved on at quite a great pace after the director switch. It wasn't necessarily that the show started out horribly, it just didn't have enough content and the jokes kept repeating all the time. It wasn't a good formula, even though comedy formula is to often times repeat jokes, because there wasn't enough spacing between segments and it wasn't always random enough to warrant a return of that joke. For example, often times shows like southpark will repeat a joke but take it a step further. This show would repeat too soon, and wouldn't take it any further. That is, until later in the series.
The art style is great, especially for this type of show. Looking at the thick lines used on eyelashes really reminded me of school-esque doodle drawings, where the thick line is just a flat headed marker stroke across the page. It was symplistic, which gave a very school esque vibe, but was also well animated. Things were all in all smooth, and were pretty stylized when heavy movement was taking place.
I am not a major otaku, but I still liked the jokes and how Kagami always gave the Konata otaku joke a twist back into the real world, stating how it is kind of stupid and unrealistic and really shows how motivation can be directed at the wrong place. The only problem I had really with the jokes was when they were edited or bleeped out, which got annoying especially at the gundam reference. I didn't know you could get into legal trouble for just mentioning a show, but I guess it could happen. Other than that, there was little to hate about the show. It had it's slower moments, but also kept a nice pace and kept you entertained with what the characters are doing.
I've heard a lot of bad rep when it comes to the Lucky Channel segment, but I found it alright the first episode, and then the other few episodes it just felt too much of the same. The idea wasn't poor, but I felt like they should have done what happened to lucky channel later in the show earlier, to keep things fresh and creative. There were moments that were genuinely funny, and other moments where it felt like the last 2 pages of a manga where it give a somewhat witty background about a character but doesn't really keep you that interested. The problem was also that when it did those boring character descriptions, it would take about 5 to 7 minutes of a episode, which is far too much wasted time.
This may be out of place here, but the English dub of the show wasn't too bad either. Did a good job keeping characters similar. The only voice in the English version I didn't like was the person who played Patricia, only because her voice didn't sound foreign but instead sounded poorly mic'd. The Japanese dub was great aswell, but I just thought it was worth noting that the English dub team did well enough that I felt like it was localized but also true to the original.
It isn't the best show in the world, but it was better than I expected going into it. I was recommended it by my Japanese teacher (of all people) and she said that at times it can be kinda of girly and cute but at the same time really tackles the otaku or anime fan audience. I didn't really get what she meant by that fully, but after a long while of hesitation, I watched the show and after that I really understood what she meant before. It is a series worth trying atleast the first 5 episodes or so, and then deciding completely how you feel about it. It's definitely a show that is better in one sitting, segment at a time. Like 4 episodes, stop, 4 episodes, stop.
I think the total rating would be 8 out of 10, just because there were those few annoying tendencies in the writing and the progression, however in no way is this meant to be a "poor" mark. I tend to rate things literally and something getting a 10/10 would be nearly impossible for me.
Looking that the rating, I feel like there may have been way too many 10s for this show, but to each their own I suppose. I just don't think it can be called perfect when it has quite a few flaws in progression.

At first when I watched the series, I barely got ANY of the jokes, aside from the few more obvious ones. I really only watched it because it was calm and relaxing, and was just interesting to watch. Between then and now, I have watched a good 20+ anime series, and just recently, I decided on a whim to re-watch Lucky Star. And to my surprise, the humor made sense. From watching the anime series that I did, I learned a very great deal more about Japanese culture, and common anime scenarios (Eg boy and girl getting locked in gym storage room together), and due to that fact, I understood about 50-80% more of the humor. (I still didn't get some of the hardcore stuff)
Animation Quality: 8/10 don't have much to say here...
Script: 9/10 Didn't really have much of a script, but it didn't need one either
Voice Acting: 10/10 It was really good, really no downsides to it...
Editing: No idea, I've seen people post different things here, no idea what it is >.>
Emotional Involvement: 7/10 Maybe I'm just used to watching series with depressing storylines, but I really didn't get emotionally involved in this... other than the humor which pretty much made up for it I suppose.
Characters: 10/10 wide variety that you can relate to, from lazy and laid back to energetic and crazy
Overall: 9/10. Liked it a lot, always made my day to watch an episode and calm my senses. :]

For me, characters play a huge role in how I rate an anime. I just found the characters in Lucky Star very intolerable. Everyone says how Konata is a great character, but I just found her annoying. Just the way she acted and the things she said kind of aggravated me. And unfortunately she is the subject of worship by man LS-tards (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqGbE9yLLA4 darkpanda008's comment). She is probably the main reason for my general disgust of this series (albeit the other character were a major annoyance as well).
It's weird, I am usually all for the kind of random and episodic anime, (like Nyoron Churuya-san and Azumanga Daioh) but Lucky Star didn't really appeal to me. Now for the people that are going to say "I bet you didn't watch past episode 4", I've watched the whole series, so I gave it a fair chance to redeem itself.
Sorry if I've peeved you off, but that's what I think. Let the flames begin.

You just have a different opinion which you explained and which we shall respect. I'm sorry to hear you didn't find it enjoyable, though. Even more am I surprised that you named such anime series as AD or Nyoron, saying you liked them and still do not like LS. Well, I guess even such people do exist. :p

What, specifically, do you dislike about the characters or find annoying? Many people like Konata because she is either a lot like yourself, an extreme opposite which makes it funny, or a mix in between (which was the case for me.)

Well, I can see how you would hate Konata. She definitely does take advantage of her friends to some degree and she teases Kagami. Sometimes it can get on your nerves, but Konata does have plenty of moments where she is picked on or the tides are turned on her. I usually find those moments more funny since she's the boke in this situation.
But, I do kind of agree that you will see a few characters in Lucky Star you really don't like. I can't stand Minami and Yutaka.

Well if Konata wasn't over the top with it, it wouldn't be funny, it would just be a slacker. The fact that she ALWAYS asks for homework and tries to legitimize it is part of the hilarity of the character.
Also, you don't have to agree with a personality of a character all the time. The fact she is different really represents real life more than if they were all morally goody-two-shoes. Ex. Light Yagami is a horrible person in morality, however that doesn't mean in any means he is a bad character. I feel Konata's the same, in a less extreme matter of course. I feel her Otaku-ism is childish, consumerist, and downright wrong at times, however that doesn't mean she isn't a funny character. In fact, it is that and Kagami's, the character who is supposed to pinch you and bring you back to reality, response that makes the show funny.
I really dislike people judging characters by their moral traits or decisions: That is what makes them unique characters. If they all were morally similar, it would be as though they are the same character.
Again, I don't think this show is "perfect," but I feel it definitely does a good job being funny without trying to push jokes around. The real joke in the series is how characters interact with one another, and that can only work if the characters are extremes of something. Miyuki is incredibly clumsy, Kagami is incredibly organized and rarely makes real mistakes, and Tsukasa is a bit of a mix between both Konata and Kagami.
I loved the show, and spent a very, very good time watching it.
I like well-done slice'o'life (okay, I tend to like about anything that is "well done"), and I had a great chemistery with the "special trip" it takes to enjoy Lucky Star.
I'm among the people who had a ball watching the girls talking about "how do you eat this ?" for a third of the first episode. I know many were driven off by this, but for me, I laughed and had a blast.
The whole otaku/geek constant shout out were also extremely funny. Konata is definitely someone I can relate with when it comes to gaming and the non-consumerist part of manga/anime fan.
It was perhaps a bit heavy-handed on Haruhi after a while, to the point it started to become a bit like thin-veiled publicity, but there was enough jokes about it to keep it fun and good-natured.
The characters were mostly pleasant : Konata is fun and, as said above, someone I can really relate with. Most of the rest of the cast is at least sympathetic (only Yui was a real bore, in fact).
Kuroi was the kind of teacher that only exists in a dreams (a good-looking teacher with a heart of gold and who spend her free time playing games ? Come on, if that's not the ultimate combo, I don't know what it can be...). And Kagami... well, she's redefining the notion of "cute".
All in all, a VERY good serie. I give it a deserved 8, and unlike most people who reason only in "10" or "0", I consider a 8 a very high rating.
I really dislike people judging characters by their moral traits or decisions: That is what makes them unique characters. If they all were morally similar, it would be as though they are the same character.
That's quite contradictory (and doesn't make lots of sense).
If all characters aren't similar, then it stands to reason than they won't be liked the same. Precisely because they do vary. Also, NOT judging a character on his morality is absurd. You find someone is "sweet" or "a jerk", because of this. Of course you can be entertained by a jerk character (Haruhi, Haruhi, do you hear me ? She was, BTW, the main problem - even though she's the wole point - of the serie for me, precisely for this reason), but that doesn't mean you have to actually like her :p

No, actually I appreciate the explanation. My peeve comes with people who can't explain their opinions or who simply make assertions as if they were self-evident facts. :)

I just wanted to say that I agree with this statement, and consider it one of the more difficult things to stick to in general as a fan. There was someone here who absolutely hated Konata's dad Soujirou because she didn't agree with his morality, and her dislike generated many posts likening him to a sexual predator or a rapist. I on the other hand, also disagree with his morality, but I found him funny and just enjoyed his small presence in the series.
I think that outlook will lead to a happier viewing experience of any show. (Gotta admit though, Yagami Light sure did challenge me.)

My enjoyment of the show went down considerably when they started introducing all the new characters. I always though Yukata and Minami were a bore, great characters for the others to work off of, but they should have spent less time in the spot light. Patricia and Hyori had their moments and I wish time was taken away from the other girls and placed on them. I'm not saying I disliked the show, but I started skipping over parts.
I rarely dislike a character based on morality or worldview, I may hate them, but I don't dislike seeing them in the anime. The only times I dislike a character are when they are utterly annoying, Mokoto in Minami-Ke as do Mikoto in Mai-Hime. I can't think of any character reaching their peak of annoying in Lucky Star.

That was the main issue I had with them. Yutaka and Minami were just so very one-dimensional and a good amount of time was focused on them. The first years didn't have a great amount of charm than the 3rd years did because they didn't have too much to work with. Many of there conversations consisted on...
Yutaka is cute and innocent, Minami is embarrassed about herself for some...reason, Hiyori is unlucky and perverted, and Patricia is an otaku from America.
They didn't have too many moments where they had simple conversations. Nothing really just sort of "pops" with them. The pros about Hiyori and Patty though is that who they are doesn't define them. Just because your an otaku doesn't mean we know your personality.

This anime was almost there, but it can't edge Kanon 2006 from my number 1 favourite anime.

sorry to bring this back up, as for the sake of the newer generation Lucky Star fans (WTH am i m talking about!? :heh:)
well after rewatching several eps, there is someting still bugging me
is Konata going to be okay when she grew older? well, because of what her dad just said,
Soujiro : "promise that you don't die before me Konata-chan"
makes me feel worried about her health condition :(, did she also inherted her mom's illness or something that was passed down the Izumi family tree, that is causing their body growth problems?
& the same thing also happens to Yukata-chan?
or i'm just seeing too much Clannad vibes right now X_X
i hope her father's genes managed to stop that from happening if it does exist...

I think you're probably pouring too much into it. Though, then again, I had never paid that much attention to the series (as far as genes are concerned). It's an interesting observation though. I can just see them making a Lucky Star sequel with some sort of insanely 'depressing' undertones. That would be... kind of freaky.

I think you've totally gone off in a wrong direction there.... :) Her dad had to go through the pain of his wife dying. It was a "selfish" wish that he not have to endure the loss of another close loved one (let him go first he hopes).
Also, the loss of an offspring is more pain than many can possibly imagine.
