View Full Version : A beautiful love story with a fitting ending

no old art animation please :)
Ai Yori Aoshi would be one of my favourite romance focused stories of all time. Lamune is right up there, too. Both are definitely what I would consider beautiful stories, as opposed to say, Lovely Complex, which while an excellent romance, focuses too much on the comedy side to be 'beautiful' . . . but of course, that depends how you define things.
Maybe give some examples of stuff you've seen for comparison?

ai yori aoshi- DEFINIETALLY
this is the BEST romance anime i have ever watched! I'm still crying after about 2 months have passed since i watched it...it was so beautiful...
theres also a 2nd season but i forget what it is called
Ai Yori Aoshi had potential, but it soon degraded to typical harem anime. The ending is not exactly satisfying either :)
Lamune (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=3414) - the most heart-warming thing you will ever see. Slow paced story about two childhood friends in a seaside rural town, slowly moving from simply friends to something more.
Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=3573) - romance/drama in a hospital setting.
Gift ~Eternal Rainbow~ (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4585) - romance/drama with a wee bit of fantasy.
Canvas 2 (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=3215) - romance/drama. One of my favorites.
If you don't mind something more dramatic:
Iriya no Sora, UFO no Natsu (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=2169) - romance/drama/SciFi
Air the Movie (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=1667) - romance/drama
Ai Yori Aoshi had potential, but it soon degraded to typical harem anime. The ending is not exactly satisfying either :)
While I usually agree with your assessments and suggestions... I have to respectfully disagree on this count.
It wasn't typical harem stuff. He always remained loyal to Aoi. It was much like Lamune in that regard... except the other girls didn't know about them, so they were after him. Yet Aoi never went psycho about it =p It was a very touching series, and Kaoru remains my favourite harem lead ever. I usually hate lead males in a lot of anime, actually. He's one of the few I've ever liked.
Your other suggestions, though, are all good. Though I think Gift is just "Da Capo 3/Alternative" =p
Hantsuki is definitely right up there. Iriya is a recent favourite, too. Very touching series.
Ai Yori Aoshi had potential, but it soon degraded to typical harem anime. The ending is not exactly satisfying either :)
I would disagree that Ai Yori Aoshi was a "typical" harem anime. Despite all the typical harem humor, the core romance between Kaoru and Aoi remained and made this series much more of a romance than almost any other "harem anime" I have ever seen.
I also found the first season ending entirly satisfying. I admit the second season was not quite as good (although I still found the Tina arc especially touching), but the season two ending was not nearly as good as season one.
If anyone did like the anime of Ai Yori Aoshi, I would stronly suggest reading the manga. The english version of the 17th and final volume of that series is due out next month, and the manga brings the whole story or Kaoru and Aoi to an actual climax.
Lamune (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=3414) - the most heart-warming thing you will ever see.
Huh, I have never seen this, but you make it sound very interesting. I may have to check this out, too!
Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=3573) - romance/drama in a hospital setting.
I second that. A wonderfuly touching romance.
Gift ~Eternal Rainbow~ (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4585) - romance/drama with a wee bit of fantasy.
I enjoyed this one two, although not as much as Ai Yori Aoshi or Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora
I might also recomend REC. It's a "real life" romance about a 20-something office worker thrown together by chance with a young female seiyu.
While I usually agree with your assessments and suggestions... I have to respectfully disagree on this count.

I am going to respectfully disagree with that as well :)
It started of nicely, before they had to create the artificial harem environment by having them all live in that house. The huge amounts of fanservice does not exactly help either considering the 'serious' tone the story had during the first two or so episodes. It is 100% 'typical harem stuff' past the initial episodes. Him being 'faithful' is no indicator of it being otherwise - in 95% of all harem shows the lead is always 'faithful' (doesn't realistically consider other girls) towards the 'default' girl.
As soon as we have 5 girls living under one roof and after the same guy (+fanservice to boot) it is as harem with stereotypical characters right there :)
Kaoru ... dense and slow. Not a strong male lead. Aoi is a very bland character as well.
While i consider Ai Yori a decent show, i don't see anything stellar about it.
The best male lead in my books is Haruhiko from Gift. Yuuichi from Kanon is not half bad either, even though some actions earned him a bit of a minus points in my book.
Gift and Da Capo are not that similar, besides the basic plot outline. Da Capo is a full blown harem, Gift is a love triangle. First season of Da Capo is riddled with filler episodes and rather poorly paced. Gift gets straight to the point and is good at it, plus it features on of the best male leads you can get to see in such shows.

If you want a "fitting" ending, then I would recommend against Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora. It's fitting in a way that it's logical, but I don't think that it's what you have in mind, especially the "beautiful love story" part.
For this thread I would recommend REC, Love Hina (Again), Nodame Cantabile, NHK ni Youkoso!, Onegai Teacher, Onegai Twins, and Gravitation.
School Days - Love Triangle with a fitting (tragic) ending...
Victorian Romance Emma - both seasons, you'll have to see the 2nd season for the ending
Saiunkoku Monogatari - the second season is still airing but the 1st one is a good ending by itself
Full Moon wo Sagashite - even though this isn't completely a love story, the ending is beautiful

School Days - Love Triangle with a fitting (tragic) ending...
If only that ending was actually aired on tv....
suzuka is one top of my head, cant think of any thing else, ill edit wen i do
Sola I thought this was a really well done romance with fantasy elements.
A lot of people like Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien but I personally recommend staying AWAY from this one. I have never hated the main character of a show before this one...(just a warning)

Currently watching Sola and its soooo good.
While Honey and Clover is not what you'd call a conventional love story (or rather, love stories?), it's realistic and heartfelt. The ending, while not entirely perfect, is very touching.
And Fantastic Children, if you've heard of it. It has lots of fantasy/adventure elements, but is at its core a beautiful love story of two - or maybe, three - people who would sacrifice everything for the one they love :)
Crap, I watch a lot of shoujou, but can't really think of any thing else now o_O may come back with more suggestions :D
Arkuatic
2007-09-24, 23:45
The ending of Sola was not fulfilling...reminds me of how FMA flowed...good then the ending ugh. But loved the characters. I'm not much of a harem type person, really prefer deep loving anime.
Arkuatic
2007-09-25, 13:21
aww i hope those aren't the only romance animes with good endings. Any other suggestions :)
Yeah, the ending of Sola doesn't exactly give you what you want, but it does "fit" imo.
Hmm, I'm more of a harem type person, so I don't know what else to suggest...
what about Chobits? Still one of my favorites.
Iriya no Sora UFO no Natsu is also a high ranking one on my list.
Natsuiro no Sunadokei This one is only two episodes long, but really well done. I actually like the ending of this one. (this one is a harem, but it's kinda hard to tell....the other shows aren't)
annnnnd I think thats all.
Arkuatic
2007-09-25, 22:02
not enough romance when its harem :(, heart warming romance of course like lamune
Well Natsuiro no Sunadokei *is* technically a harem, but you don't really notice it, because the main character only loves one girl. It's all about him trying to save the one girl he loves.
And the other two I said previously aren't Harem. Chobits is really good for romance, give it a try. (Comedy as well)
I havn't seen Lamune though, so I can't compare.

seen kanon 2006, chobits however eh i prefer human to human or something like sola.
I'm really surprised that no one here recommended Bokura Ga Ita (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6655), that one made my cry (from joy and sadness) quite a few times ;)
Here are some more that I recommend:
Air TV (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=2480) - probably not for everyone, but the love IS there, and it was quite sweet
Kare Kano (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=392) - one of the classics (but I must admit the ending was a bit disappointing, but there's always the manga :))
Midori no Hibi (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=3592) - a really funny one, but the romance is really good
NANA (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6115) - now that's what I call real human emotions, the love stories in this anime are so realistic that it hurts
Paradise Kiss (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=5081) - from the creator of Nana, so yes, it is good
Saikano (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=914) - another classic, with a beautiful ending
Honey and Clover (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=4975) - really realistic, probably not everyone will love it, but human relationships, are really good in this one

You know Vibeke, our definition of a beautiful and fitting ending is vastly different, because I wouldn't consider the endings of Bokura ga Ita, Air, and SaiKano to be really beautiful. I don't question that the anime is beautiful overall, but I have the feeling the ending isn't quite like as what the poster wants.

Some of these are hard to remember so forgive me if they're not up to your expectations!
Aishiteruze Baby - there is some romance in this but the main plot is about the guy taking care of a little girl.
Full Moon wo Sagashite - the plot shifts around a little bit although its main focus is singing. Beneath all that there is a pretty good romance though.
Karin - Yes some will say there is a slightly annoying "third wheel" but overall this anime deals with the building romance between two characters.
Nanaka 6/17 - There is romance in this but I can't remember if there was more than one girl that liked the guy...
Narue no Sekai - I definately agree with the last person who said this. It is probably one of my more favored romances because it doesn't have any of the love-triangle / harem stuff that I've just gotten sick of. It deals mainly with the relationship of the two, the onlly issue is that it never gets that serious. For me, this was fine, but maybe you want something with more drama.
Hopefully one of these will work for you.

Please PLEASE, for the love of God check out Noein. If you like Narue no Sekai or Iriya no Sora, you would love it. Like Narue or Iriya, it's basically really more or less a love story set on a sci-fi background, though a tad darker in some parts. Beautiful? Hell yeah. Fitting ending? You took the words right out of my mouth.
I was also gonna rec Saikano, but on second thought the ending might not appeal to you. I thought it was fitting end though.

currently watching kare kano atm, i dont rate b4 i finish heh. Mainly i like soft romances between teens without alot or any harem.
kare kano does not fit at all with the title of this thread. its ending is extremely disappointing (a lot is left hanging). i think at the end of the last episode something like "we'll be back" is written, but it's been like 10 years now and there haven't been any new episodes.
i've heard that the TV series caught up to the manga so they had no story left to make episodes from. the manga series continued but the TV series didn't.
i also heard that the show had budget problems and some key creators left like halfway through the series. you'll see a noticeable difference in style towards the end of the show.
all those problems made the last fourth to half of the show a big let down.
that being said... kareshi kanojo no jijou is one of the greatest romance anime out there and deserves to be watched just for the first half of the show. the last part of the show is even fine to watch as long as you have the expectation that it'll be nothing compared to the beginning.
i'm currently reading the manga so hopefully that'll take me further than the TV series did and play out so much of the story that ended with no resolution.

I really think I understand you. I'm also quite keen on romance stories, and the same happened to me some time ago: I couldn't seem to find a good romance anime that I hadn't watched.
It's true that you have lots and lots of harem animes out there, but I am of the opinion that they aren't USUALLY (and I emphazise this to avoid fanboys flames) good romance stories, because the very concept of harem represents a frivolous treatment of love.
I would recommend you to switch to manga. There you can find much more romance stories. But before that I'll give two recommendations more:
- Try "Han bun no tsuki noburu sora". It's original, sweet and have a nice ending.
- Give a chance to old animes. You can find much better romance animes in the 80s and 90s than nowadays. And specially, you should try "Maison Ikkoku" and "Kimagure Orange Road", in my opion two of the best romance stories in anime.

checking eureka out, and im not a real fan of reading mangas.
ive watched tons and tons of anime and my fav ones with a great story and with great endings are ones that are popular with others to :D
so i recommend you give them a try:
Onegai Twins, Hajime No Ippo (not excatly a love story, but the character has love for what he does and that is boxing. Best anime amoung all animes that exist... why do people not watch it or why does it take so much effort to get them to? Because its about boxing. I can already picture you in your home thinking im not gonna watch this or i dont like sound of it. Trust me... try it) , Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora, Zero no Tsukaima.

saw Lamune and i have to say....I LOVE IT. Are there any similar anime to these?
The closest show I can think of is the original To Heart, though the romance is much more understated. But the atmosphere and general themes are very similar.
For a much more bittersweet take on the same theme I recommend Byousoku 5cm.
As for recent shows? School Days is the most distinctive one out there. The romance is a truly beautiful train wreck and the ending is more than fitting.
Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora, Zero no Tsukaima and onegai twins, seen em. And i prefer love for another rather than for a sport, suzuka is an exception since its entangled with love.
there is a romance in that to :). the problem is that the main character is shy and the person he loves is shy. so its sorta a weird situation that you dont see in other animes :D

hmmm no one mentioned seto no hanayome yet?
if not.....IT IS THE BEST ANIME EVER!!!!!!!!! thats why its rated first for the summer...
it has parts of romance in it, but mostly comedy.
SnH is a very entertaining piece of work, no doubt :) One i highly enjoyed. But, it doesn't have enough romance to recommend to someone asking for a beautiful love story. Past episode 2 that show is 98% comedy, 2% romance. I doubt it can truly be passed as Romance/Comedy ... more like pure comedy with a bit of romance every now and then. A very enjoyable watch, but for someone asking for a romance show ... he would be left fairly disappointed in the romance department.

try this one
Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=1431)- interesting story about life and the earth wrapped around the relationship of two people, a bit ecchi but only in the first few eps.
Erementar Gerad (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=2183)
The relationship between the couple is obvious and absolute as they go on an adventure while discovering their care for each other.
Karin (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=3214)- it's pretty good, very solid relationship that develops.
Shingetsutan Tsukihime (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=1015)- good anime very touching, also play the game which has been fully translated.
Utawarerumono (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=3427)- A bit more action then romance, but the relationship between the couple is sweet and touching, the ending was extremely good too.
Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=2478)- This one had me confused as to whether the relationship was romantic or familial, but there was definitely chemistry between the two!

Love Story series are ones which show the couple as boyfriend/girlfriend and dating and in a relationship.
Good romance series have the couple dating and in a relationship. It's best to show the couple as boyfriend and girlfriend and dating and in a relationship. It's best to have lots of kissing scenes, some sex scenes, engagements, marriages, living together, break ups and an emotional, on and off, committed relationship. There's also divorce in some series, too.

Series which have lots of kissing and sex are really great and fun. It's best to show the couples dating and going on dates as a couple and being in a relationship.
It's much better to show the couple as boyfriend and girlfriend and dating for a long time than to have to wait for something to happen. It's so much better seeing a couple already in a relationship and going through obstacles as a couple in a serious relationship. Kissing scenes and sex scenes are fun, too.
Usagi and Mamoru from Sailor Moon are boyfriend and girlfriend and in a serious relationship, they are dating for years, they get engaged, they get married, they become husband and wife, they have a child, they become king and queen of the earth. They were also reincarnated lovers from a past life. It doesn't get any better than that.
Miaka and Tamahome / Taka 's relationship is much more serious in the manga. The manga is much longer and it shows Miaka and Tamahome being a serious couple, being engaged, getting married twice, getting engaged twice, two marriage proposals and it shows the couple being in a committed relationship and being husband and wife with a child. The manga has a second half of the series which the anime does not have. Their relationship as boyfriend/girlfriend and a serious couple in the manga is much deeper and much more mature.
Rei is Kira's boyfriend in Mars and in the 15 volumes they have a very serious, mature and committed relationship as boyfriend/girlfriend. They move in together, they have sex, they get engaged, there is lots of kissing and their relationship is mature.
Great love stories have the couple dating and in a relationship and boyfriend and girlfriend during the series. They show break ups, lots of kissing, sex, living together, engagements, marriage proposals, weddings, marriages and the relationship as a couple dating and in a relationship.

Ai Yori Aoshi had potential, but it soon degraded to typical harem anime. The ending is not exactly satisfying either :)
That's not quite accurate. In most episodes we always recapitulate to the main theme, which is developing and strengthening the relationship between Kaoru and Aoi. So one can criticize the show for employing a setting typical of harem anime, but the progression of the romantic development is far from the typical harem anime. We begin with Kaoru and Aoi. We grow with Kaoru and Aoi. We end with Kaoru and Aoi, even if we don't follow the manga to its conclusion and end with Enishi. After the inclusion of Tina, Taeko, and Miyuki into the mix, there was not a moment of confusion and indecision concerning Kaoru's affection for Aoi, even amidst tempting situations. Ai Yori Aoshi separates itself from the pack in a very clear and distinct way. And the moments Kaoru and Aoi share together as a couple is matched or outdone by no other couple I've seen yet in any other serious romance anime, much less the competing harem ones.
