For those who don't know what the Mid-Autumn Festival is all about (it's also known as the Mooncake Festival or the Lantern Festival), here's the Wiki link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-Autumn_Festival

I'll skip the "Mickey" cakes but Mooncakes are another matter.... I wish my local area put more energy into all the seasonal festivals but they can only seem to muster enough for a few of them. I suppose the recent festival hosted by our local Uwajimaya corresponded to the Aki Matsuri but the area has a habit of messing around with the dates of Oban, Tanabata, and the new year dates for weekend convenience.

I think I remember looking in a Hong Kong magazine and I believe it was Haagen Daz that offered this moon cake look-alike only the whole thing is made with ice cream. I want to eat that. But the thing is I forget whether it's really Haagen Daz or not.

"Snowy mooncakes". I'm totally addicted to these now, compared to the more "greasy" traditional ones, these actually tastes quite good.

It's a medium-sized dense "cake" significant to China. The outer brown layer is the crust which is chewy (not sure what it's made of though). Inside is usually lotus seed paste which is very sweet and dead in the center of the paste is an orange egg yolk (solid) which is probably meant to symbolize the moon.

You know how if you eat too much sweet stuff at once you get bloated and you don't want to eat anymore? Usually, that happens if you eat one-fourth of one mooncake, so you can have an idea of how sweet it is. At least for me, I become bloated after 1/4th slice. :heh: Oh and you usually drink tea while eating it so that might balance the sweet taste by a lot making you eat more. I've heard of some people who eat 2 or 3 whole mooncakes. O_O

The whole thing is very fatty although there are many varieties out there so there are probably kinds that aren't fatty. More info here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mooncake).

Isn't there a Chinatown in CA? I'd actually be careful when buying mooncakes in Chinatowns...especially the one in Hawaii. They can be so careless just to make money. Remember to look for a "Best by" date somewhere on the box.

I know the Chinatown here, they sell mooncakes year-round. :uhoh: As in, they continue to sell the mooncakes that they neglected to sell in August all the way until next August when they have the new mooncakes in. So unsuspecting people who buy the old mooncakes are subject to..."non-fresh" material. :uhoh:

But since I haven't been to other Chinatowns, I can't judge for them. The Chinatown in Hawaii is just...dirty.

Oh really? Well if I ever buy one I'll be sure to look at the date and stuff.
I'm sure theres a Chinatown in San Fransisco but unfortunately I live like 7 hours away from there. :( Maybe I'll try one someday though :)

If you do a Google image search for "Haagen Dazs mooncakes", it'll have all the different versions of ice cream mooncakes they made. :)

Every non-Asian person I know that's tasted it (and isn't into Asian crap because of anime) thinks it tastes nasty as hell. I would be inclined to agree with them, except I'm Chinese and I like the ones with eggs mmk.

Anyone tried the ice cream mooncakes made by Papagallo? They taste pretty nice, especially Vanilla cookie.
