View Full Version : Clannad - Voice Actor Appreciation & Discussion
Pellissier
2007-09-27, 05:25
The purpose of this thread is to discuss, critique and idolize the Voice Actor cast of Clannad. Please remember that the discussion should center on their performances as professional voice actors and not on the show content (which can be discussed in the various Episode threads). Please remember this simple rule when critiquing a VA's performance or reading another forum member's critique:
- Don't take it personally.
In other words, you’re free to disagree with another person’s opinion, but don’t flame them if they offer a well written and well thought out analysis that differs from your own opinion. Keep it civil.
- Voice Actors are humans.
Yes, it’s true. They’re human. Therefore, don’t just indiscriminately rip them and their work apart as if they’re inorganic objects. You don’t have to praise them non-stop, but be thoughtful in your criticism.
This thread might duplicate some discussion in the Episode threads, but it can also serve to demystify various VA roles, disseminate VA information (VA Bios, VA photos, etc) and provide cast information of various types as well as discussion about performances.

From what little I know of this game is that, it's definitely non-H. So definitely it's possible to hire professional voice actors to feature in the original game itself, which carry over into the anime.
180 degrees from, for example, School Days' voice actors.
Big names galore. I hope the two leads have gotten enough practice interacting from Nanoha StrikerS though, especially Nakamura, since he seems to be using his Vice voice from that show.

Then again, the original PC version (which I have) is voiceless.
So were the "Standard Versions" of Kanon and AIR. Even if those two do have very little H-contents, KEY was still able to get top-tiered seiyuu for the "All Ages Version".
Kanon: Horie Yui, Tamura Yukari, Kawasumi Ayako, Seki Tomokazu, Kawakami Tomoko
AIR: Kawakami Tomoko, Tamura Yukari, Hisakawa Aya, Inoue Kikuko
Tamura Yukari (Nanoha) has the distinction of being the only actress to feature in all three of KEY's season-themed titles. (Kawasumi Mai - Kanon, Michiru - AIR, Sunohara Mei - CLANNAD)

Those are all the characters listed on ANN. Besides, even if I wanted to add infos to that post, I couldn't since it's very close to the maximum text limit (50000 characters per post).

Oh something I just noticed. I am SO looking forward to Nagisa's dad's appearance.
This is one heck of a belated breath of fresh air after watching Bleach, SRW:OG-DW, and more recently RxJ. If he has done any other roles that do not belong to the above typecasts, please excuse my lack of exposure.
I'm imagining the fun already...

Andrew?
Well, Okiayu being Okiayu, his voice works almost always has that kind of tone behind his voice, ranging from jerks to stoicism to sarcasm.
I'm more looking forward to Sakaguchi (( he's the most awesome thing in Clannad several hours into the game )), and seeing if Nakamura can surprise me. He was quite good as Abe and Dinosaur and so-so for Nanao and Vice, but I can't seem to catch much chemistry behind his interactions with other VAs in corresponding works.

That's a pretty good line up of VA's for Clannad. Of course, I'll be looking forward to how the two main character's VA will do and interact with each other for Clannad as they have recently done VA work for a show that I just recently finish watching.:heh:
btw, does the game have the same VA as anime? i know kyou's and ryou's VA are the same VA as in the game

as far as i could check wikipedia (which is a hell to NOT get spoiled in the characters section), every character kept their seiyuu, except Tomoya, who has different for each media (game, movie and anime)
Game : Itou Kentaro
Movie: Nojima Kenji
one thing to note: Nakahara Mai's performance in the anime is VERY different from the game.
As far as i could hear samples from the PS2 game, she sounds much less shy and hesitant than in the anime (she sounds more like Rena)
Looks like the change still match Nagisa's personality

Hmm... I dunno. As far I could recall in the beginning parts of the game (( never went over 2 hours of gameplay )), Nakahara's Nagisa in the game, especially her beginning lines had a very soft almost ethereal feel to how she protrayed Nagisa kinda like a super airhead that isn't one at all (( paradox, I know )) as opposed to the more generic anime Nagisa which felt more natural of Nagisa's character.
As for Tomoya, I still prefer Kenji from what I hear in the Drama CDs, but I'll wait until Nakamura gets into the more emotional scenes and and steps deeper into the chemistry bases where how they speak to one another itself is a vital part of expression between characters to give a proper evaluation.
Dunno, but as soon the name "Tongatsu" falls, i was reminded of "Nagasare Airantou". Where there a Pig has the same name. By any change there are some connections between the Seijus?

I am quite upset that when Noto was around for Otakon (got her autograph TWICE), I did not know the good that is Clannad (well I knew it existed and what it is, but I didn't like it as much as now) and of course Kotomi... sighz :(

Yeah, Fuuko's voice has some kind of vibration in her wavelength that make it Moe...
Doing a little research a bit after CLANNAD started, I learned that the voice actor for Furukawa Nagisa is the same one that voiced Yuzuha from the anime that got me back into anime back in 2006, Utawarerumono. In the latter series, she played a very timid character, but she lacked a lot of screentime and was often in a very dead and drone voice. But it was a very unique voice with a hint of squeek (yeah, I have a strange choice of adjectives) and I remembered it.
It surprised me to hear the voice Nakahara Mai again in CLANNAD, and she's been given a far greater role. But watching episode 6 tonight gave me a new respect for her. She voiced sadness so well that it was phenomenal - a mix of humor, empathy, and sadness. I would never have imagined her to be so capable and I look forward to witnessing her talent throughout the rest of the series.

Nakahara Mai has done more prominent roles than Yuzuha in the last few years. You just need to look at the list in the first post by Pellissier to know what I mean. She's done Rena in Higurashi, Mai in Mai Hime, another girl called Nagisa in Strawberry Panic, Teana in Nanoha StrikerS.
Worthy of mentions are some of the well-seasoned "veterans" in the cast.
Ranging from Okiayu Ryuutarou (Akio), Inoue Kikuko (Sanae) and Midorikawa Hikaru (Yuusuke). The Slam Dunk Shohoku duo Okiayu and Midorikawa are reunited once again after both having illustrious seiyuu careers.

What he said!
Seriously, she's added a fair bit into her unique repertoire in recent years, as her shown abilities in many anime increased exponentially. Her laughter in Higurashi ep4 especially made me sit up and take notice. Yuzuha was pretty shafted in Uta'mono IMO though, so she didn't get to show much. And if she's on your seiyuu radar now, take a look at this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFeB9XyVoNY).
(Thanks, houkoholic)

Tia in StS was pretty much all-in-a-day's-routine-work for her already I think, as she's got her skills acting as a fighting character maxed out from the Mai franchise(no pun intended). Pretty routine for those 3 veterans too, the only one who's got to stretch it a bit IMO is Okiayu, who's not playing a spiteful role for once. And I'm loving every minute of it. (Daiuchuu Ginga FTW)
To add some new input though, Nakamura Yuuichi as Tomoya is. Not. Working. Totally eclipsed by Nakahara and Sakaguchi and Okiayu and...(I bet Kyoani's casting choice here was definitely NOT meant to help this here budding seiyuu.)

You've probably got used to seeing Okiayu playing gloomy kick-ass characters like Tezuka in Prince of Tennis, Byakuya in Bleach and Scar in Fullmetal Alchemist.
Okiayu can indeed play cheerful characters with ease as well, like Andy in Gundam SEED, Dark in DN Angel, and who can forget his maniacal laughter as the psycho Jinnai in El-Hazard? And who says Akio isn't spiteful? They're all spiteful, in a friendly way, of course. :D

Cut the newbie some slack, it's only six episodes. I remember a similar criticism for Satou Akemi playing Shiori early on in Kanon, but eventually, she got more and more comfortable with her role as the show progresses.
Besides the role of Yuuichi, it was not Kyo-Ani who decided the casting, it was KEY, so Kyo-Ani was stuck with what they've got when they've more or less pledged to keep the original cast from the PS2 version.

I don't remember Andy being cheerful...that said 9/10s of SEED has been forgotten...:heh:
And I guess that's why Akio could very well be a typecast? Doesn't stop the talent from shining through though.
Yeah, I'm probably being a little unfair to Nakamura, since his character isn't even in the spotlight yet. Guess it's time for some benefit of the doubt, they single-handedly brought Ono Daisuke into the spotlight after all.
Time for the sound director to prove himself. (Again?)^^

I remember Nakahara Mai who voiced the energetic & funny Midori from Midori Days & some other anime, too. But her voice as Nagisa is so special & different unlike in any other series, (what a talent!). Her real life voice is even more different. There's a Clannad internet radio show hosted by "Nagisa" & "Sanae", it's streaming live every Friday on onsen.ag. Her voice in that show has a very high accent & overall, it sounds so moe!!! :)
Besides Nagisa's CV, the other two voice that I finds pretty funny & unique are that of Ryou & Fuuko. :D

I ahve to say i love the unique voice of Fuko Ibuki :D.
I like the seiyuu for Tomoya - not least because, as Graham Acre, he voices the coolest character in Gundam 00!
Tomoyo's seiyuu sounds great, too.
Well... after not hearing Fuko's voice for such a long time, it was so good to hear Nonaka Ai's familiar voice again in Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (yes, I know it's older than CLANNAD... but I have put it off until now).

I have to say i love the unique voice of Fuko Ibuki :D.Yes, that's the great Inoue Kikuko (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=542), the 40-year-old voice of Belldandy, who continues to claim she is 17.

And as Boggart says, Fuuko is played by Nonaka Ai (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=13321), the self-described "voice therapist," who was Iriya in Iriya no Sora, and Mikan-chan in Manabi Straight, and is Kafuka in Zetsubou Sensei.

I like the seiyuu for Tomoya - not least because, as Graham Acre, he voices the coolest character in Gundam 00! Tomoyo's seiyuu sounds great, too.Tomoyo's seiyuu is the woman I think may be the top seiyuu of all, Kuwashima Houko (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=281). She was Clare in Claymore and continues her amazing performance as Shuurei in Saiunkoku Monogatari.
http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/1135/kuwashimahoukojpguo0.jpg
Tomoya is played by Nakamura Yuuichi (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=15878), who has been around a while, but is only now beginning to get leading roles like this, like Abe in Ookiku Furikabutte, like Graham Acre, and like Ikuto in Shugo Chara. Personally, I find him uneven, but very good when he's good.

I'm really surprised that Kuwashima Houko also did Natarle, Stellar, and Flay.

I personally like Houko Kuwashima as Tomoyo, her voice sounds like one of a strong-willed girl, but she can also does a more sympathetic, softer voices at times.
Ryou Hirohashi captures the magic of Tsundere quite well for Kyou as well.

I agree completely on the excellence of Kuwashima Houko. There is some Shurei in there, combining strong will, power, and an almost fey gentleness. At first I thought her approach didn't go with the voices around her, but it's very strong.
And this is the most I've liked Hirohashi Ryou. The tsundere has a nice balance of dere. I also like her as Asuka in KimiKiss.
Sorry, I should have been clearer. I meant Mai in this show, Sunohara's imouto. ~
Sunohara's sister is Mei. That was what qtipbrit92 was trying to tell you.
Cheers.
I know before the series started, I was not exactly happy that Tomokazu Sugita was not the voice for Tomoya. Yet, now that I'm thinking about it, Yuichi Nakamura just has taken this role and run away with it. He voice just perfectly fits for the role, and he can do stuff with his voice that Sugita can't. It's a much better sarcastic type of voice.
Thinking of Kanon, Yuuichi kind of is a cute cuddly teddy bear personality wise. However, Tomoya is definately not. That's why I'm thinking this was a good choice.

Wow the voice acting in this anime is top notch, especially in some of the more embarrassing/funny scenes.

I really like how ryotaro okiayu (was it?) who play the voice of akio furukawa
and also...too bad that yuusuke doesn't get many chance to appear...eventhough hikaru midorikawa is also great too when play the voice of yoshino ^^

A little funny that....a little trivia..
Sagara Misae's seiyuu is Yukino Satsuki who voiced Kaname Chidori in FMP
And in FMP Sagara Sousuke is a character..
I like Mai Nakahara , Nakamura Yuuichi (I think it's his first starring role) and Sakaguchi Daisuke who also voiced Shikimori Kazuki in Maburaho....
Mai's talent is uber flowing....

Rena's calm mode = Nagisa + omochikaeri!
She would go all-cleaver on tomoya if he cheats on her (Tomoyo on after 1? lol?)
Yes, I rofl'd and hugged my screen at the same time when Nagisa almost started crying. Why must she be so freakin' adorable all the time?
What I love most, however, is when Nagisa seemed to take some authority over Tomoya later in season 1, making sure he stayed out of his delinquency. "Okazaki-san!" She sounded just like a mother after the child comes home after hours. :heh:

Well you don;t want Mai Nakahara to do a "Omochi-kaeri!" to a Dango. Or a "USODA!" if she misunderstood Tomoyo and Tomoya's actions.

I'd want Fuuko back just so I could hear her voice actress again. She's my absolute favorite! But I think we all have had enough of her for a while...

Something odd, if not funny, here.
Tomoyo's seiyū is Hōko Kuwashima 桑島 法子.
But her previous roles include...
Gundam SEED - Flay Allster, Natarle Badgiruel, Via Hibiki
Gundam SEED DESTINY - Stella Loussier, young Rey Za Burrel
RahXephon - Quon Kisaragi
:heh: As somebody said, he's getting "Protect Tomoyo" vibes here.
Guess that's not necessary since
She's pretty violent!
I hope the two leads have gotten enough practice interacting from Nanoha StrikerS though, especially Nakamura, since he seems to be using his Vice voice from that show.
Well, there's more from Nanoha to come.
Kappei Hiiragi (柊 勝平 Hiiragi Kappei?)
Voiced by: Ryōko Shiraishi
Also in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (Miyuki Takamachi)
Oh, for those who might be interested, the seiyuu for Yuusuke Yoshino, Hikaru Midorikawa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hikaru_Midorikawa), features in the recently-released PS2 game Fate/Unlimited Codes, as the voice of Zero Lancer!
*looks forward to crossover pics of Yoshino armed with the Gáe Buidhe and Gáe Dearg...*

Episode 17 is all in a day's work for Koorogi Satomi in her role as Ushio, if anyone remembers Chi(the cat).
Also, she's 43 and doing kid roles. Wow. I wonder what she actually sounds like.
Just rewatched ep18, and I can't help but feel all fuzzy from her gasp of childlike wonder after seeing that flower patch.
