View Full Version : Duets Karaoke Competition III
After many days procr-- I mean, planning, I decided to warn the masses that the next karaoke competition will be held soon. How soon, you ask? Very soon. Like this month (depending on your time zone, "this month" might be a different month altogether). As I had people asking about it, I decided to post the basic stuff so they'll know what they have to work with. I'm still working on where the entries has to be sent, format, etc, but guess what--- the rules are out! Hum... I'm not making sense right now.
As the dates will change, please check this thread often for updates!
I was lazy so I copied the rules from the last one. Minor changes here and there though. And please, please read the rules, and if you don't understand or need clarification, you can either post it here or ask me. I won't bite (not yet, anyway).
Rules
Important info will be bolded for no reason whatsoever.
1. This is a duet karaoke, so that means that two different people has to sing (if more than 2, please contact me and we'll see).
2. Vocal track must be recorded in one take!! This is one of the most important rules ever! If I wanted a perfect record, I can just listen to the original track. So please, record the vocal track in one take!!
3. Do not use any effects (double voice, change of pitch/tempo, background sound effect, pitch tweaker, echo, etc). If you are not sure what is allowed and what is not, ask me. If it sounds remotely like an effect was used, don't be surprised when I come knocking your inbox demanding what's up with this and so on.
4. You may enter with as many as 3 entries. You don't have to submit 3 if you can't/don't have a partner/don't feel like it.
5. mp3 format is preferred but not required. Just don't send me some obscure format that no one uses except you (we all know that re-encoding something multiple times degrades the quality, right?). That and my computer's on the verge of dying.
6. Any song from an anime/game can be used, even if the original was not a duet. Character songs are allowed as well. About drama: if there is an equivalent show that is in anime form, you may use that song. For example, Nodame Cantabile has both drama and anime (and manga, but I have yet to see a manga that has a theme song). PS: I check songs to see where they come from.
7. Karaoke tracks are preferred but if you can't find one, you may sing over it but yours and your partner's voice *must be* louder than the original singer's. If you have difficulty finding a karaoke track and you know for sure it exists, ask me and we'll see.
8. Tracks should be tagged with the title of the song and the name of the participants. I noticed that people don't like to tag stuff. Why won't you tag them! Why!! It just makes me angry when I have to look your name up (and specially when there is no name whatsoever, I don't have your voices memorized!). The format for the tagging is (nickname1)(nickname2) - Song title (from what anime/game is it. Break this and I shall send forth my zombie army upon you!
9. Anybody can participate (forums, IRC, family, random people from random places) as long as they follow the rules.
10. Songs do not have to be in japanese - it can be in english, latin, russian, etc as long as the song is from an anime/game. Opening/ending songs that has been officially translated are also accepted (for example, the english version of the opening for Inuyasha).
11. The entries will be broadcasted on the net (shoutcast) and also distributed as a torrent. By entering, you are basically giving me the file to do whatever I want with it (ooooh, I can mass-produce a CD, then sell it when you become famous!).
The entries will be judged by our usual panelists (unless they're not available) as well as the winner of the last competition (if they want to). Of course, the general population will also get a chance to nominate their best choice. I'm thinking of adding more categories, but prizes will still go to the top first one because I'm low on funds (like always). What? Prizes! Yes, prizes! But people are doing it for the glory of it, I believe. At least, that's what I'm hoping.
Oh, yea, the winners will get the chance to be a guest judge for the next competition if they wish to. Here's something to aspire for!
Deadline will be at the end of October, most likely. I'm still working out the scheduling with some other people, so just know that it'll be soon. With this, happy singing~
PS: If, for some unknown reason, you want to talk to me, I'm on IRC (kcl822/Kestra@synirc.net). PM works as well.
EDIT: Deadline for entries is October 31st, 2007 at 11:59p.m. EST!!
EDIT2: To upload an entry, go to http://karacom.animesuki.info
Broadcast will be on November 3rd.

Noooo, October makes it hard. I can't really afford to go home to record until November! *starts begging family and friends for money*
Oh, is there going to be noncomp entries this time around, too?
Ooh... duets season~
*starts looking for partners including a certain blob* :heh:
Yay it's finally here :)
*runs off to find a partner*

yay! ....hrm... i've never done a duet before...
Hmm, let's see... I haven't recorded in ages and my partners have run off to who-knows-where. Wonder if they still want to duet with me. :heh:
*goes off poking the previously-agreed-upon-partners*
Random post - today's schadowfox's birthday (the guy who provides the shoutcast server, torrent, website, and a bunch of other things). Happy birthday, schadowfox! Now you're old!! Ha!!! :p
I would sing you the birthday song but I'll probably hurt your ears, so I won't.
Congrats though~
One request...
May we have a listing of every single song performed in the history of this competition, both solos and duets? I don't want to do something that has been done before, and I'm sure others feel the same. I'd compile the list myself except that I don't have every competition on this computer right now.
That should be a rule, really... no songs done in the past :)
Thanks!
That should be a rule, really... no songs done in the past :)
:twitch: You know how hard that would make this competition? That's like saying, "no anime where a similar plot or theme has been done before". :uhoh:
(although that might cut down on the number of anime to a manageable viewing amount. :heh: )
It'll be manageable as long as it's not on the animesuki front page.

This will be interesting. I don't think I've heard more than five entries from the previous duet competitions.
Does anyone want to try doing a duet with me? PM me if you're interested.

oh i would do a duet with a friend..
You know how hard that would make this competition? That's like saying, "no anime where a similar plot or theme has been done before".
Not really. There are thousands and thousands of untapped songs. Each successive contest would simply force people to be a little more creative.
Besides, every season, about 20-25 new shows and 80-100 bishoujo games/video games are produced. The contest could survive on that alone.
Guess it's time to start sending PMs... I'm pretty sure I have a bunch of songs that have no chance to be repeated... >_>;

I second this idea, or at least post a list of very, very often-done songs that get two or more entries per contest, such as LIFE from Bleach and that Moon on the Water song from BECK.

Li Jianling, you're not going to believe this. I had a dream about you. Don't get the wrong idea, I've had dreams about countless random people. You were a short Asian girl, it had something to do with going to Karaoke or something. Bah, I don't remember the details. Probably looks nothing like how you really look.

What song? How about Hito to shite Jiku ga Burete iru from Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei? The lyrics can be re-highlighted to give singers equal parts.
To anyone else: anyone up for Zessei Bijin from the same anime? Or Suki? Kirai!? Suki!!! from Zero no Tsukaima ~Futatsuki no Kishi~? I'm most interested in singing songs from anime that aired within the last two years.

Traveling through most of this month, so I don't think I will make this competition (sorry Cz ;^_^), but hopefully it airs when I'm near a computer at the beginning of November. Looking forward to hearing the entries!
Aww that sucks now we can't have the same entries anymore lol. We were 2 for 2.
And here i thought kcl went of and died without telling anyone!
Actually, I'm an undead so that doesn't count. :p

And unfortunately, the single doesn't have an instrumental version of it at all. Nice song though.

Easy :)
One person records their bit, sends it to their partner, and you record your bit :)

I have a question that's probably already been answered somewhere... The three entry thing... Does that mean I could theoretically enter three songs with the same partner? Or is that only for working with different partners?
...not that I intend to enter three songs, but...

I thought it was supposed to be done in "one single take", meaning that both singers would have to record at the same time? I'm a bit confused. ;_;

Nope. Each person needs to record there's in one take, and then you can combine them.

Each entry has to be with a different partner. 3 songs by the same people is kind of boring, don't you think? ;)

Very easy right?
One sings and mixes, sends it to the other, then that one sings and mixes? And with mixing I mean add your voice to instrumental etc.
Anyway, :) I like duets.

Do we have a deadline yet?
*begs for it to be after October 21st*
Um, on a slightly different note.. I think it'd be kinda neat if someone held a karaoke voice chat/conference thing on yahoo or something. It'd be fun to hear people practice before they actually submitted. That way we could give tips and what not. Just an idea! (Dunno if this necessarily goes in this thread or not, but I thought this'd be the best place). ^_^
hey guys TvT i would like to join this comp and am looking for partner.
i've never participated in the karaoke comp before, if it helps, here's a sample i recorded just now.

Except I don't know too many duet songs >_<
Found my three partners! Sadly, my old duet partner, Shinji, is not one of them. :(
Anyway, three people, three completely different singing styles. BPM of the three songs: 48.3 (3/8 time), 140, 180. This ought to be interesting...
It'd be fun to hear people practice before they actually submitted. That way we could give tips and what not.
Some people prefer to have their entires hidden until the very end. That way, there's more surprise, suspense, and drama in the IRC channel during the live presentation. Mwah ha ha.

It NEVER fails...
Change of seasons and my kids bring home the plague.
We make no promises on this comp's entry lol
The cubs will not be entering either as they have the plague still.
I can sing through mine to a degree, but they can't.
I have 1 confirmed partner, so I will do that one and call it a day.
Oi
One song down, two to go...
I have one question for kcl822. Is EQ allowed? My partner most likely recorded in a carpeted room, while I recorded in a drywall room with no upholstery. This means that my partner's voice sounds more "lo-fi" due to the absorbed sound, while my voice has a dry feel to it and has a slight reverb due to my voice bouncing off the drywall. Both of our voices clash and I don't like the result at all. EQ would alter the volume of specific frequencies and nothing else.
There is only so much that straight volume controls can do (which I assume is allowed). I can PM you a sample of what it currently sounds like. At the very worst, I'll try to record somewhere else.

As for EQ, still no. If it clashes, then it clashes... I guess you want it to sound perfect, which I understand, but hey, that's not the whole point, is it?
As a consolation, I'll probably plan on gathering a bunch of really well-done tracks and releasing it as a special or something (in where anything and everything is allowed as long as is an anime/game song), so maybe you can do that then. And before anyone asks when I'm doing that, don't because I do them when I feel like it (if you really want to make sure your song will be included in this future project, email it to me and forget about it until I release it).
I think that's all I wanted to say for now.
oooh, this sounds interesting, I must keep checking this out. (sorry, but I have absolutely no time to participate, nor the voice)
Ooooh~ I definately need to participate ^-^
Would anyone like to sing some song from Digimon with me..?
A small reminder that the deadline is on October 31st. For those who finished recording, go to http://karacom.animesuki.info and upload it there.
If you have problems with the site, pm me or schadowfox for help.
And now, back to our regular scheduled programming.
Argh, it's duets this time around... orz. Any chance of making the regular solo karaoke competition a semi-annual event? ^^;

How should the entries be uploaded, since it's a duet? Does only one person upload it for the two people and e-mail you privately about who the partner is? I don't see an input field for partners' names on the entry form.

both contestants have to upload the "exact" same entry (i.e. mp3 file)
they will get linked automagically :-)

Will the automagic work for a group of 3+ people?
Speaking of which, I need to make sure some of my singing buddies get off their butts to actually learn the songs and record! So little time left~

good question, kcl822 didn't mention about 3 people participating, will have hotfix that then :-)
For those who are thinking of doing as a group (more than 2 people), please let me know beforehand. I guess allowing it won't harm anyone...

But you still have time and non competing entries don't have to be taken seriously, ne? I know that my non competing entries are a complete disaster. You can ask Chibi Nasu for references. :heh:
For a moment I feared I was not going to be able to complete my competing entries. Only one had been polished since some time ago and I postponed the other one (my third partner seems to have vanished from the face of the earth) to record it by end of this week. Then, Thursday I woke up without any voice. Nothing would come out! Even my tots seemed amused whenever I tried to tell them something. :upset: But part of my voice has returned so I can complete the song for my second partner, who needs me since I'm her only partner. :uhoh: Hope to do that today and if a 3rd partner appears, that it will be between today and tomorrow... :eyespin:

Do we have to send by email, or can we just link them to you through PM?
Has the Duets Karacomp been settled so that we can upload more than one entry? One of my duet partners tells me that after uploading one song, she was unable to upload a second entry she has with another partner because only one entry is allowed per person. I haven't experienced this yet because my other song is still not ready. Still, I'm wondering about this...

Yeah, but I don't have time ;_; I have two major exames Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday I have a presentation, also I have to finish an essay before Monday. So I have to prepare. Plus there's the fact that I'm suffering from flu and thus don't feel too well. And I keep missing people I should talk to... ;_;
So there are problems with the site... I'll have to bother schadowfox some more.
Meanwhile, for the non-competing ones, those should be emailed to me to kcl822@gmail.com. Don't forget to label them!
Yay, all three songs done! >_>
I had to rent a hotel room for the final two songs. (and all cheap private hostel rooms were booked for the week, argh!) Apparently the rest of my family got sick and could never leave the apartment. -_-;
Well, at least it solved the drywall echo problem I was having. I didn't want to let my partners down.

Wow, that is certainly extreme dedication (or maybe just huge aversion for singing in front of family :heh: ).
I decided to ignore the fact that my housemate's always at home and sang the other night, and probably this weekend as well. :uhoh: I won't have many entries though as I don't have enough partners and nice songs to sing.

The last time kcl did that, she had to judge and broadcast live 80 entries. (that took 7, 8 hours IIRC.) I don't think she wants to do that again. :p

How about just advertising the contest on the front page for two weeks, then? If I recall correctly, duet competitions have less entries anyways due to the challenge of coordinating people.
Actually, I have no power to add anything to the front page. And honestly, if I had more than 70 entries or so, I'll probably have to be more stringent in the stuff I air or the songs that I accept. Yes, having a lot of participants is great, but a small one is nice too. You get to know them more. Great, now I sound like those sappy commercials or something.
And with that, reminders to people that deadline is in halloween. I've been checking the entries that are coming in, and so far, they sound nice. I think one of the almost killed me because of its cuteness. To the cute song people: bring it on! Mwhahahahahaha!

it should link as long as the file is the same title and source are not taken into account for linking

linking happens only once in a while,
so if you upload your entry it might take some time (2-6 hours)
until it gets linked :)

Wait... both partners have to upload the same file? Is that not a complete waste of bandwidth and time? It should be good enough if one person uploads the entry.
I plan on uploading 45mb wav files to the site, since they'll be compressed by kcl822 anyway. Asking my partners to do the same is just... dumb.
Edit: Having a dash (-) in the song name truncates it. Please fix~

Yes both partner have to upload the same file!
It's a waste of BW and Time if you upload a raw-wav file
Dashes aren't getting truncated at all
Your file looks like
GipFace # Partner and GipFace - Artist ~title with-a~ [Album].wav
so that works
Wait, everything gets compressed? I never knew. I've been uploading 320kbp files because my computer threatens to freak out if I tried to work with a raw .wav file.
It's just GipFace who istn uploading an mp3 -.-
as far as I know kcl re-encodes them for the streaming later on,
but maybe she'll tell us that herself.
It's a waste of BW and Time if you upload a raw-wav file
I would upload .flacs, but the last time I did that, kcl822 said she didn't know how to decode them. Give me a break :eyebrow:
as far as I know kcl re-encodes them for the streaming later on,
Every entry gets re-encoded to 128kbps stereo MP3 in the final package, so transcoding from a 320kbps submission causes quality loss. This is compounded by the fact that many people use a lossy source to begin with. kcl822 re-encodes mainly because she needs to normalize the volume of all entries before they get streamed. The only time that didn't happen was in the second duet competition (2006), in which all the entries were accidentally re-encoded to mono. I'm sure that was just an honest mistake.
(truncated dash problem)
http://nnl1.com/etc/x004.jpg
I've uploaded the file twice now and it still cuts off the name (the stuff after it is the source). As long as kcl822 can read the filename and rename accordingly, then I guess it'll be all right.

flac would be great ^_^; maybe we can get kcl to work with flac next time :-)
it's not a bug its scripted, it truncates everything after 20 chars :)
just found that out myself, looks like I forgot about it :upset:

Hmmm gipface, does that mean you're going to want it lossless? I sent it to you as mp3, but I'll give you the .wav if u need it.

I suspect there are a lot more entries than listed because one of the partners did not upload. Also, the contest site was based off GMT and not EST so it shut down five hours too early. I tried uploading at 11:30 PM and it didn't work. -_-;

You must download an IRC client. The most famous one for Windows is mIRC and you can get that at mirc.com. The server is irc.synirc.net, and the channel is #animesuki. Simply join the channel at 1PM (or 11AM if you want to hear non-competing entries) and start talking!
The broadcast itself is probably an MP3 stream, unless we're OGGing this year. Just pick your favorite media player that can stream MP3 audio: Winamp, Foobar, WMP, or whatever you prefer best.

Looking forward to the Duet competition after a hour from now.
And thanks for organizing this and the people who are participating in it.
Those anonymous guys... xX_Xx (my ears are gone)
Well actually, some of the songs were very well sang, others not really. Some people got a good voice, but lack the experience to actually sing. Applying effects won't help either. But there were some that I particularly think they were very good.

My (somewhat meaningless) opinion:
Phaedrine & Mien & Adonic Meki - Super Shooter (Gantz)
... DIEEEEEEE (he actually said that, didn't he?). ok that was awful. I'm sorry ^^
Fukairi & Hina - TARGET ~Akai Shougeki~ (Digimon ZERO-Two)
not bad, but I guess it suffers from the music, imho.
Amberle & Ethrus - Lunar (Lunar)
They're very young, they got a long way to go.
Jiah & GipFace - Waltz (School Days)
This one was very well sang. Loved it.
Shiemi & Chibi Nasu - VEGA (Princess Princess D Drama)
It's quite an hard one. Some meaningless failures, but I guess it was very good.
keiko8 & HirokiBaby - Bon Bon (Lovely Complex)
This was damn good. Both went very good, how unexpected. Congratulations to the singers.
MisaMisa & Mnemosyne - Yume no Naka e (Chobits)
Sorry, the singers don't have enough voice.
Hina & Shurin - Go (Naruto)
You chose quite a very hard one (even the real singers can't sing it well). Courageous ones, huh?
(edited)
Li Jianliang & GipFace - Bakuhatsu da mon~n~ (Sakurando Kiss)
It's very well sang, but it stuffers greatly from the music. What a waste, such good voice...
"one of them was a guy" - *feels chocked*...
Shiemi & Cz - Moment (Gundam Seed)
Shiemi was alright, Cz wasn't very well that day I guess
Adonic Meki & mien - Ichigo Tsumi Monogatari (Strawberry Panic)
...
Chibi Nasu & Jub Jub - Ichirin no Hana (BLEACH)
Good job for both.
Shiemi & Cheyanne - Canta Per Me (Noir)
I thought they buried their grave considering this music is fricking hard. But it was still good.
stakato & LeLiAye - Tobira no Mukou e (Full Metal Alchemist)
There was a part at the end of the chorus which sounded strange, but the rest was very very well.
Chibi Nasu & Cz - Yureta Kandagawa (HunterxHunter)
Awesome... I'm just speachless towards to how Chibi Nasu sang.
Biiru & Hina - Hare Hare Yukai (Haruhi no Yuutsu)
Very good, it made me hear it carefully. It was a very good job indeed.
Mnemosyne & Li Jianliang - Zessei Bijin (Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei)
Impressive, that's my only word
Fome & GipFace - Metal of Okkusenman (Megaman 2)
Not good at all.
Naoko & Shurin - Best Friend (Fushigi Yuugi)
Couldn't extract their pottential, so can't comment on this one.

Not good at all.
Unless Fome really stunk up the place (and he certainly didn't), I don't see how it's possible to go from "very well" to "not good at all." I actually thought I did a better job with MoO than Waltz. You do realize that Fome is a two-time winner of this contest, right?

Thanks, Gip!
Gipface, I just put your voice towards the left arbitrarily, and put mine to the right. It could have just as easily been the other way around. Did it appear that mine was centered more? I know I definitely separated them by the same degree.
Fome & GipFace - Metal of Okkusenman (Megaman 2)
Not good at all
Caldron, can you tell me what you disliked? It will help me improve for next time.
Well, the real issue was that it was the only entry that had the voices off center, so it was probably jarring to those listening with headphones. I really should have spoken up about it, so I'll take equal responsibility if it made some heads turn:
[14:22] <diabolistic> it seems like it's the recording equipment that's really holding them back
Damnit, I won't do that next time. I guess it doesn't really help.

It was my first time with this recording setup; I borrowed a mic from the studio since we're not recording anything until December, and I'm not trained in using it or anything, so I learned a few things.
This was also the very first time Ethrus & Amberle have sung in public (so to speak); by no means would they have done spectacularly :) no one expected it, but I learned stuff from having them record as well; like have each do their own track and mix together instead of standing side by side where they make one another giggle :)
That aside, the entries get better every competition, and this was no exception; you guys did phenomenal!!
Caldron, can you tell me what you disliked? It will help me improve for next time.
Sure, I will always be as honest as possible.
I'll assume you're the one who sang a little lower in the volume, since Gipface also sang Waltz (I could somewhat recognize his voice).
My evaluation:
1. Gipface's voice trembled a bit, and was a bit off tune too. Can't say he sang very well.
2. Also, as I mentioned, the sound of your voice was a bit low in volume, which reflects in the negative points, and leaves me with less evaluation time of you.
3. The work suffered a lot from the sudden falsettos too, you shouldn't have chosen a music in which the tone abruptly highers, it requires quite a strong voice to do so without failure, or some quite good sound effects.
4. Sometimes, the fact that the music is fast (usually >140 bps) usually makes its singing very hard. But this was, in fact, a positive point for you, since you actually managed to work hard to surpass this difficulty, while making others appear.
Less important points:
5. I'm a recent AS member, so I haven't heard about other competitions, but this time, there were a lot of girls singing, so it's only natural the guys were a bit in a disadvantage here.
6. When I said not good at all, I am not saying it's bad. I'm only saying it's right in the lower edge of the average (this time because of point 5), or I would say it was bad, awful or horrible, and it wasn't.
I apologize if you disagree with these points, but that's how I hear it...

Thanks for the comments. Well, I can explain the volume issue at least. For the parts we sang together, I knew that since I was singing harmony, it would be odd for us to be the same volume. However, I didn't know if Kcl would allow me to just lower the volume for those parts, while keeping other parts loud, since it would be technically modifying sections of the sound file. So I opted for a compromise, making it louder than a proper harmony, but softer than the solo parts should have been. Results probably weren't so great, lol.
Will be glad to hear you next time and how much you improved. I'm sure you will make a better choice next time, and your technical problems won't happen again, so I can only expect good things from you from now on :)
I didn't know if Kcl would allow me to just lower the volume for those parts, while keeping other parts loud, since it would be technically modifying sections of the sound file.
If that's banned, then my other two entries are instantly disqualified. I dynamically changed volume levels every time I switched from main to harmony and I didn't try to hide it (Sakuranbo Kiss made that obvious). "Volume" isn't an effect.
Just so that you can actually critique this without going off memory, I've put up the song with only my vocals at http://nnl1.com/etc/stuffage.ogg (64kbps). Okay, my change in pitch from E4 to D5 is off. Going from E4 to D5 is extremely tough to pull off because I am unskilled at going from chest to head voice that quickly. Also keep in mind that we had to do these in one take. I could not record half then half again. By the time I did this take my throat was burning up. I can't hear much trembling myself, sorry.
This Logitech microphone, while not creating much static, is omnidirectional (which is bad because it creates reverb) and makes my voice sound waaaay too metallic. I think I'll get one of those Sennheisers for Christmas ~_~
Anyway, that's all I really have to say regarding this matter. I'd rather gush about the fantastic performances of everyone else than dwell on our entry.
Since no one has mentioned it yet... Cheyanne's children simply melted my heart. So cute~~~~~~~~

Chey's kids were the highlight of my day, seriously. So darn cute! I couldn't stop smiling the whole time I was listening to it!
As for other entries, I thought GipFace & Jiah were impressive on Waltz (Jiah has a really pretty voice!), and stakato & LeLiAye's Tobira no Mukou e was amazingly well done, as well. Also enjoyed Biiru & Hina's Hare Hare Yukai and Mnemosyne & Li Jianliang's Zessei Bijin, and Fome & GipFace's Metal of Okkusenman was fun to listen to, as well.
But overall, I enjoyed listening to every single entry, and was highly impressed by everyone!
I remember that there was a time when you could hear entries off the site. Is that still available? Or should I just wait for the torrent?

Not much useful to add, i can only repeat what i said earlier about how great it was. I'm glad i noticed this thread in time. It's a bit of a pity that there was only 25 people or so listening. This event really deserved a lot more attention than it got for the hard work people put in to this.
Kudos to everyone who participated. And Looking forward to the next event.
Still working on the torrent and the voting details, etc. What can I say, I'm a busy person(?). Hopefully I'll have it ready by tonight or tomorrow, the latest. At least I have an extra hour to devote or something? Heh.
Great... now I have songs playing non-stop in my head. Oh, yea. If you are curious as what the previous competitions sounded like, the torrents are available at http://tracker.animesuki.info
And now, back to work for me. :)
PS: Thanks to GipFace and Fome, I now have that song stuck in my head and can't get rid of it! Whyyyy!! I'm gonna be extremely harsh on the judging for that one. Mwhahahahahaha!
Eee, I'm so sorry I couldn't make it to that chat! I kept reminding myself but when it came down to the night it just totally slipped my mind D:

there was a "campaign" of sorts, once.... and there ended up being almost 100 people who participated and the broadcast was 7.5 hours.... ^^;;
That 7.5 long broadcast was tiring. The in-channel comments died down as the broadcast dragged on, not to mention more work for everyone to vote and the judges to judge. Unless Caldron's intention is to have more people listen, not sing. :p

Yay~! *listens to Shiemi and Shinndou's non-comp entries again*
Well personally I'd rather the competition get more publicized, but find some other way to deal with a large number of contestants. Like grouping them into stages and having people vote amongst those, and then only the contestants who make it to the final round get aired on a shoutcast, so you have a relatively short broadcast but many listeners. Oh wait, but that requires you to sing different songs for 2 stages, not good... well, alternatively you can only air the best as picked by the judges and then have further voting among those? (And the rest can be distributed by torent?)
Having more listeners eventually will mean that more people will also feel like participating.
I have to say I was totally bowled over at how well everyone can pronounce Japanese though. I would have honestly thought none of the serious singers were not Japanese...

I don't like this idea at all. The great part about this contest is that every entry is accepted and played. I mean, how else are we going to get our super-manly testosterone fix? It's a casual event and not giving everyone a piece of the limelight would ruin it.
Having said that, I have two ideas...
1. Split the contest over two days - The weekend is two days long, so why not?
2. Three-minute entry cap - This was imposed in the first round of AnimeNorth's J-Star and it worked out quite well. It would mean that in the worst case, 150 entries would have to be played for the event to last 7.5 hours, and that's if everything was exactly 3:00.
kcl822, if you don't have time to host the Winter solo competition, I'm sure you could find someone who would be eagerly willing to fill in. Heck, I'll do it as a last resort... as long as it's not too much trouble. The Winter one always gets the most entries, so it would be a real shame if it were canceled.
Oh, and thanks for putting up the non-comp entries!

Darn, I missed KaraComp this time around... I wouldn't have been able to sing (Sore throat), but I would have loved listening to the stream. Guess I'll just have to satisfy my karaoke hunger with the non-competitive entries...

I think the duration of the competition was fine. But only 25 people or so on the stream listening was saddening.
And even if more people want to participate than doing the broadcast over multiple days sound as a good option. Though for the extra work for the judges and people who host it... i have no idea how to solve that... Perhaps more people who do the stream. But in the end there will be a need of more time and manpower to get it going.
As for a simple way to get more listeners. I think a simple forum announcement after the closing of the submitions would of helped a lot to make people aware of it.

Unless Caldron's intention is to have more people listen, not sing. :pYes, I want more people to listen, because it deserves such meaning. I've heard so many "oh darn, I've missed it". And 100 people is far much better than 20 right? Also, a broadcast isn't actually what I was having in mind, but rather spreading it out through the internet, or even AS, since there's actually not many people who actually read this sticky...
Of course I thought about those things before. And like GipFace said, the beauty of this is that anyone can have their time in the spotlight (great, now you made me remember that cute song with the guys singing, which was good in terms of singing, btw). In fact, I had people asking me to either announce it everywhere and cut back on the entries that gets broadcasted (meaning to do it in elimination stages) for years, but hey, I'm stubborn.
If this gets bigger, there are other logistics to consider, like which ones are getting broadcasted, where to get the server (and remember, bandwidth is not free), voting, and prizes (international shipping is not cheap, if you were wondering). Of course, there are also time constraints. First of all, time zones of the people listening has to be taken into consideration. Also, how long will the contest run, how long for voting, etc. This is one of the reasons we can run this competition semi-frequently. If that was not the case, it would be have to be run every other year or so!
And of course, the schedule of the people running this needs to be considered as well. But any new ideas are welcome - like they say, 2 heads are better than 1!
Btw, the listeners were around 32. :p
PS: I'm working on uploading the file somewhere, so hopefully it'll be out by the end of the day today.
I got back to my homeland last night. I missed everything! :p Glad I was now able to listen to the non competing entries. (Thanks for putting them for download so fast, kcl!) They were so nice! Well, except the ones featuring me, perhaps. :heh:

My suggestions would be:
- About timezones, you can always broadcast it twice (at the time and, 12hours later, someone else could broadcast) :)
- If we all do something, this contest will actually be spreaded out. Even if it's only 100 people hearing it, it will grow a lot faster. Because those 100 are likely to hear next time and tell more people.
- It would be good if each contest had the next contest date already set, so people wouldn't forget so easily.

A few things:
* Personally, I enjoy having only a single, scheduled air time, since this is much more likely to draw a larger crowd than diluting the audience across multiple broadcasts. Also, I pity the unlucky time zone that does not get the benefit of our current MC.
* I don't think that drawing a larger audience is an activity that can be separated from increasing participation, since it seems that the vast majority of the audience is made up of participants (or past participants). Just like people are unlikely to wander into karaoke bars for the sole purpose of listening to other people karaoke, I'd think that most people wander into the contest because they want to participate. Of course, increasing participation has all of the drawbacks that have been mentioned previously.
* We might consider posting a link to the broadcast/transcript torrent on a more visible area (i.e., front page) with a blurb about listening and voting, so those that don't care to (or can't) make the live broadcast could still listen and vote if they were interested. This wouldn't increase the strain on the organizers much, I think.
* Even without changing the mechanics of the competition/broadcast itself, we could make it easier for kcl to run these contests more frequently if we provided her with some tools to make running the event easier. Seems there's always a bit of delay in setting up for the broadcast, for voting afterwards, and for sharing the non-compete and competing entries. Schadow has posted asking if anyone was interested in helping out in the past (I think, unless I just imagined it). I'm sure providing some help in that regard would help with ensuring regular/more frequent contests, if that's what we wanted to see.
After all that wait (wait, it's only been like 3 days or so), here's the whole broadcast. Still working in torrenting it, so until then, here are the places where you can download it from.

There will be 2 set of winners this time -- the popular vote and the judge's vote (I need to come up with a cooler name one of these days). This time, the judge's panel are 4 people including myself. Should be interesting.
Instructions on voting
-Give each entry a numeric score between 1 (worst) to 10 (best). Decimal points are welcomed but don't go crazy with a number like 4.66666666666666666.
-Email the scores to kcl822@gmail.com. Subject line should have the word "karaoke" so I don't delete it by accident.
-If you are one of the participants, you cannot vote for your own entries for obvious reasons.
-Add your nickname to the email so I know who you are. If you are one of those who have a lot of nicknames, please add them all. Don't make me cross-reference them.
-If you want to add comments, please do so. I will gather them all at the end of the week and post them. They will be anonymous so you don't have to worry about retribution.
-The deadline for voting is November 13th at 11:59p.m. EST. The scores will be posted the following day.
Reminder: mine does not count.

I thought I posted a comment after the competition was over but while skimming back through the pages of the thread I didn't notice any. Shame on me!
It was really fun listening to all the entries, and I honestly thought they were all rather good overall. I'm not a regular of this contest (this is like my second time taking notice of this, after the previous karacom) but it was fun getting to know all the other people who partecipated, both among the competing and non-competing ones. Btw GipFace, I freaking want to steal your voice. The "SUKI SUKI SUKI" bit is now hopelessly stuck in my head and I end up singing unconsciously while I'm on the bus to university. Damn you, haha.
Oh, and thanks for uploading both entries, I totally missed the non-competing ones. I'm really looking forward to the next comp (is it going to be solo, or duets again?). :)
FYI, the next one's is the singles.
When it will be run? Who knows. I really should create a mailing list one of these days...

One would think that the reason kcl822 put up so many download links on different sites is so that people could find one they can download from. :heh: Thanks anyway.

Maybe you should. How about starting a Yahoo! groups or some kind of group people can join to get announcements about the karacomp? Although that would be yet another group/site people have to join/subscribe to... :heh:

I didn't attend the live session but I will give my thoughts after listening to it. As always, I'll be lying if I say they're all wonderful and perfect, so please don't be offended since these are just biased opinions, nothing more.
First of all I'd like to say that I enjoyed this very much and this year produced some amazing karaoke. Thanks for providing the entertainment!
Phaedrine & Mien & Adonic Meki - Super Shooter (Gantz)
-It's not really good but I couldn't get into the song so song choice isn't really that great IMO. 3/10
Fukairi & Hina - TARGET ~Akai Shougeki~ (Digimon ZERO-Two)
-I didn't really hear the vocals very clearly but overall it's very well sung. The music was catchy and that helped somewhat. I enjoyed it. 7/10
Amberle & Ethrus - Lunar (Lunar Silver Story)
-It started out cute and catchy but in some moments had trouble with the harmony. Some of the high notes are a bit off-sync, but pretty good. 5/10
Jiah & GipFace - Waltz (School Days)
-Incredible harmony, what can I say? This is amazing. Some of the solo I didn't like but I really enjoyed it. 9/10
Shiemi & Chibi Nasu - VEGA (Princess Princess D Drama)
-Wow what a hard song to sing and they almost sang it very well too. Very good vocals but the song was still a bit too hard, sorry. 8/10
keiko8 & HirokiBaby - Bon Bon (Lovely Complex)
-This has one of my favorite male vocals (I love most of the female vocals). Very nice job in this one, but the different in octaves was kinda weird. 8/10
MisaMisa & Mnemosyne - Yume no Naka e (Kare Kano)
-I didn't really like this one because sometimes it is weirdly harmonic while sometimes it is significantly off-sync. It's still a kinda nice song. 6/10
Hina & Shurin - Go (Naruto)
-Wow...what...wow. I knew when the music started up that this was going to be excellent or blatant failure, and it was excellent. The rap was perfect and the singing was close to excellent. 10/10
Li Jianliang & GipFace - Bakuhatsu da mon~n~ (Sakurando Kiss)
-Well this song was kinda cute...kinda. This might be mean to say but it was very entertaining.... The vocals was just a bit too drowned out by the music, but other than that, it was good. 8/10
Shiemi & Cz - Moment (Gundam Seed)
-I really like Shiemi's vocals. The vocals just didn't mix because one was really high and one was really. Some of the harmony was good though. 6/10
Adonic Meki & mien - Ichigo Tsumi Monogatari (Strawberry Panic)
-Well I'm not going to rate on the precision of this song but overall (and this might be mean also), it was very entertaining. Actually the vocals wasn't bad, seriously, just not really for this song. :) 6/10
Chibi Nasu & Jub Jub - Ichirin no Hana (Bleach)
-I didn't really think that the vocals were strong enough for this song, because some of it was really too soft. That aside, it's pretty good. 7/10
Shiemi & Cheyanne - Canta Per Me (Noir)
-Wow this was really amazing. I have nothing else to say, but that this is amazing. 9/10
stakato & LeLiAye - Tobira no Mukou e (Full Metal Alchemist)
-This is the same with Ichirin no Hana; I think some of it should be stronger. Overall nice harmony and it was quite enjoyable. 8/10
Chibi Nasu & Cz - Yureta Kandagawa (Hunter x Hunter)
-Interesting melody from the song itself, and the singing was very good. Chibi's vocals here was definitely top-notched, and Cz amazingly complemented pretty well. I still think that it's quite low like his other duet. 9/10
Biiru & Hina - Hare Hare Yukai (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)
-It started out with an accurate representation of the original vocal but kinda soft. However, it was followed by the best karaoke I've heard in my life. Amazing. Perfect. Speechless. It's incredibly accurate with the original version. 10/10
Mnemosyne & Li Jianliang - Zessei Bijin (Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei)
-I think it's pretty good. It's not my type of song, so I didn't really like the melody much. However, it has nice vocals. 8/10
Fome & GipFace - Okkusenman (Megaman 2)
-Well this is some impressive singing. The song itself isn't that great, but I enjoyed the effort and harmony. 8/10
Naoko & Shurin - Best Friend (Fushigi Yuugi)
-The music was kinda overpowering the vocals, which were average in my opinion. It started off kinda slow in the beginning then picked up in the end. 8/10
kcl822 & Meiyo - Glamorous Sky (NANA)
-Is this one of the entries? Anyways, it's pretty good, even though the music should be a bit louder. Very nice. 8/10
So who's the winner to me? GO!!! and Hare Hare Yukai are obvious candidates for me, but I can't really decide. I congratulate Hina for being so talented though, because both songs were sang very nicely.

Amberle & Ethrus - Lunar (Lunar Silver Story)
-It started out cute and catchy but in some moments had trouble with the harmony. Some of the high notes are a bit off-sync, but pretty good. 5/10
Shiemi & Cheyanne - Canta Per Me (Noir)
-Wow this was really amazing. I have nothing else to say, but that this is amazing. 9/10
So who's the winner to me? GO!!! and Hare Hare Yukai are obvious candidates for me, but I can't really decide. I congratulate Hina for being so talented though, because both songs were sang very nicely.
I cant belive I missed it Y___Y
I was with no internet for over a month and a half and I missed it...
Y__Y
well I hope to be here for the next one
and congratulations to everybody!
Got my votes in before deadline! Is there an award for worst entry this time around? (I'd sure like to get a prize some day. :heh: )
Just wanted to remind people that the deadlines for voting is today at midnight! Don't miss the chance to vote for your favorite entry! Maybe is because people are busy these days but the participation in voting and commenting was a bit... how shall we say this... Horrible. Another reminder: you must email me the votes. What other reminders are there...

Posting the original instructions again might be a good reminder, lol. :heh:

Wah I finally handed in my comments and grades :)
Message to everyone: I tried to be as objective and honest as possible, advising on which things you can improve. Maybe I seem a bit harsh on some parts, but that was not my intention! My intention is only good and trying to help everyone. ^^
Voting season ended! The carriage turned into a pumpkin! And all those other cliches about midnight. Stay tuned for the scores! Probably by wednesday evening. Who will win! Stay tuned!
* Looks at the responses in the thread and wonders exactly how many people voted * :heh:
Here's something to tidy you guys over until I post the scores. Comments for all!
My comments are the first ones, so if you want to argue, please do so (I'll get the torch ready). The rest are sent by various people. :)
Phaedrine & Mien & Adonic Meki - Super Shooter (Gantz)-Nice group entry! Some parts needs to be a bit clearer (no mumbling!). The timing in some parts are somewhat off. No major pitch issues. Now I want to do a group song too...
-The lack of drum/bass due to vocal removal really hurts this.
-I didn't particularly like the choice of song for a karaoke competition. A lot of places sounded pitchy, and I felt it seemed a little bit unenergetic at parts. Pronunciation was a bit off, too. But it was entertaining to listening to, and I thought the voices went together well.
-I love the grunting XD
-Maybe more rehearsal might work towards improvement? ^^;;
-It sounds kinda weird since you had a homemade instrumental. Your rapping and pronunciation is really good but you lack energy.
Hina & Fukairi - Target ~ Akai Shougeki (Digimon Zero-Two)-The beginning is a bit shaky. I really like the chorus where both voices blend it very nicely. A bit flat in some areas.
-Merely average, I'm afraid.
-Good energy throughout, and very fun to listen to. A little bit flat in places, though.
-Nice, but needs a bit of work.
Amberle & Ethrus - Lunar (Lunar Silver Story)-What can I say... Just too cute! They'll be good singers when they get older, that's for sure! :)
-I don't want them to win because that would be a slap in the face to everyone else. That being said, it's unbelievably cute. But everyone knows that.
-So cute! Keep them singing, Chey, they've got a lot of potential!
-OMG!! KAWAII!! XDD
-So cute! I was very flexible in rating this entry since they are such small children. Amazing job by the mother that helped them into getting this done! Hope to hear them more in the future and see how they gradually improve!
-So cute!
-This is really cute! You are quite good singers for your age. Super cute~!
Jiah & GipFace - Waltz (School Days)-A very beautiful song in which both voices match the mood perfectly. The chorus needs some work though as the voices just don't blend as well as it should. PS: your falsetto needs to go a bit higher than that. :p
-Really liked this one! Jiah's got the perfect voice for this song, and GipFace complimented her nicely. I would have liked maybe breaking up the parts a little differently, instead of waiting until after the chorus for the other to solo--just for a little bit of variation. Loved how the melody/harmony was switched between choruses, though. But really nicely done, you two!
-I loved this entry. The harmony is great. GipFace does great falsettos, as usual.
-There’s some really good voice control. The harmonies sounded a little bit overpowering but they were done well. The energy and pronunciation were good.
Shiemi & Chibi Nasu - VEGA (Princess Princess D Drama)-The harmony is just beautifully done (except at one part in the chorus where is just off). Very happy-sounding song, that's for sure.
-Nice and bouncy and all those happy things.
-I loved it! I was rocking out the entire time... *Goes back to listen to it again*
-The harmonies were good. There was a little lacking in energy and sometimes it sounded like the song was a little bit too fast.
keiko8 & HirokiBaby - Bon Bon (Lovely Complex)-I can honestly say that this is one of my favorite entries. The male voice sounds like he's having a hard time reaching the low notes. Very beautiful though.
-I'm positive the male singer could have done this one octave higher.
-Good song choice for your voices. Your voices compliment each other very well, too. There were a few pitchy sections, but overall very nicely done. Shame the difference in recording qualities was so different, but you can't help that.
-Very nice in general. May have required a bit more practice. The changes in voices from low to high and high to low don't help the song. Maybe a different choice of song that wouldn't require so many low/high changes might be better for a next time so as to keep a regular vocal pattern.
-The girl in this song has really… nasal voice. In the chorus guys voice is overpowering and you lack in energy.
MisaMisa & Mnemosyne - Yume no Naka e (Kare kano)-It sounds like both voices are going to different places instead of going together. Some notes are off as well. Otherwise, it sounds happy.
-Some notes are off...
-The lower voice was a little bit scratchy, and that was a bit distracting. There was a couple of small lyrical blunders, too. I would have liked the higher voice to have been mixed in a bit louder--the lower voice dominated the song, and there should have been a little more balance. It was fun to listen to, though.
-In some parts the harmonies sound a bit weird and off tune. I couldn't really listen to the lyrics in some parts because they sounded more like mumbles. Other than that, pretty nice.
-The harmonies were quite good. The singing in the highest parts was kinda awkward and there was lacking in energy.
Hina & Shurin - Go (Naruto)-Some singing parts are somewhat off in terms of pitch... The rest is very well done despite it being a song sung by guys.
-We are fighting dreamers! Just go my right here right now!
-Great energy, but you could have mixed your vocals a little bit louder--I felt the music (and built-in background vocals) drowned you out a bit. The little touches you two threw in there were great, as well.
-Awesome energy! I'm jealous... ^^
-Sometimes, the voices included in the karaoke track overpower the singers' voices. Voices shaky in some parts, but not really insecure. Sometimes, synchronization is lost in the parts that have the singers with the background vocals. Overall though, very good! And nice rapping!
Li Jianliang & GipFace - Sakuranbo Kiss ~bakuhatsu da mo-n~ (Colorful Kiss)-Aside from the fact that Gipface's voice just makes me somewhat... unwell... I can't deny the fact that is well done. Some harmony parts just clash. And the mumbling... Maybe his voice was just too much? :p
-GipFace deserves special praise on this one. I really hope you were home alone when you recorded this, though I'd love to know how others would have reacted. The most glaring thing for me was that the timing was a bit off in the chorus. However, this was tremendously fun to listen. And GipFace's "suki suki suki!" is going to be stuck in my head all day now.
-I love the "Tsuki Tsuki... HAI HAI!!" XD (I probably just spelled Tsuki wrong.. sorry ^^;)
-Quite nice! And very funny! I laughed hard with GipFace's suki/kissy/voice effects interventions. What got to me though was the not so good synchronization of the voices. Try better sync next time! :)
-Lol, cute, and Gipface... *shudders*
-This is really cute. Too cute. It’s awesome how GipFace is able to do this kind of songs too. It’s kinda scary. And Li has a super cute voice. I can hear some messing in lyrics and it sounds like Li has little problems on controlling her voice. The talking parts are really good.
Shiemi & Cz - Moment (Gundam Seed)-Ah, the disappearing chorus syndrome. Come on, Cz, you can do it!
-Shiemi and Cz can do better than this. Worse than Hellychan/Fome's rendition. Sorry. :(
-I would have loved to hear Cz a bit louder in the chorus! What I can make out sounds like good harmony, so I would have liked to hear it a bit more.
-This is a little boring. There’s lacking in energy. The harmonies are too quiet, but they are good.
Adonic Meki & mien - Ichigo Tsumi Monogatari (Strawberry Panic)-A very... manly way of singing, that's for sure. Honestly, I have no major complains in terms of singing. Just minor ones, like off-pitch in some parts. But you know, I prefer this version over the original. :p
-I'm growing chest hair?
-When the voices started, I was a bit taken aback, but once I got over the initial shock, I quite enjoyed this. I wouldn't say it's the best display of singing ever, but there was a lot of energy and character in your voices, and I can't help but smile every time I listen to your record. There's something almost cartoony about your voices, but I like it. Work on your pronunciation a little, though.
-I almost fell out of my chair I was laughing so hard! XD
-It's almost scary that it doesn't really sound bad. o.O;;
-Okay. This is really something. This is just scary. And amusing at the same time. The song choice was just perfect.
chibi nasu & Jub Jub - Ichirin no hana (Bleach)-The timing seems off, like the singer is trying to catch up with the music. And then, the opposite happens. I like this version too though.
-Wai wai~
-A bit shaky in some parts. The song doesn't really fit the singers'. >o (With that comment, I already revealed my identity to one of the singers. :p) But it was really funny to listen to. The whispers and fake screams made me laugh.
-The shouting is a little powerless. You could’ve added some harmony to the chorus. Congrats for hitting all the notes though ^-^
Shiemi & Cheyanne - Canta Per Me (Noir)-For me, this version was a bit too harsh for my ears. The harmonies just don't blend together at all at the beginning. I think the chorus really needs a lot of work. But I do want to steal your voices... Can I have them?
-Very difficult to pull off. Good job!
-Tall order! Great attempt, and it was beautiful to listen to. The notes hit were impressive, but at times felt a little bit strained (the vibrato was a bit uncontrolled).
-Very nice!
-Cheyanne’s voice was little overpowering sometimes. Otherwise this was really good.
stakato & LeLiAye - Tobira no Mukou e (Full Metal Alchemist)-The harmony seems to take over the chorus. The other parts were really good to listen to.
-The octave change is jarring, but this was very well done.
-Great voices, and you two sound great together. The harmonies were very good, and while there were pitchy moments, they were scarce.
-I loved this song. Some parts were a little so-so, but imo this entry was excellent and had excellent harmonies. Great voices!
-Are you both girls? I’m really confused. There’s some good blending and harmonies.
Chibi_Nasu & Cz - Yureta Kandagawa (Hunter x Hunter)-Old-style! I really like how the voices compliment each other.
-Now this is what Cz can do. Chibi nasu was great, too!
-Chibi Nasu's voice in this song is superb. Extremely beautiful. First time I give a song with Cz in it a 10 because he really made an effort and his voice complemented well Chibi Nasu's.
-Good song choice~ This song really compliments your voices.
Biiru & Hina - Hare Hare Yukai (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)-A happy song. Another good example of a successful duet.
-Yes!
-Great energy again, and for the most part on pitch.
-...wow... O.O You two were right on! There were a few slip-ups but, still, ...wow...
-Very genki song and voices. Nice harmonies. This song is very easy to do. Maybe the singers can try something more challenging next time.
-Yay haruhi! somewhat cute
Mnemosyne & Li Jianliang - Zessei Bijin (Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei)-The high notes needs some work. Very bouncy song, and the voices reflect that. :)
-I tapped my foot while listening to this.
-Great song choice for your voices, and you two sound very together. Well-sung, too.
-Nicely done!
-Voices shaky. The music overpowers the voices though. Other than that, it's nice.
This is a really funny song and it suits to your voices well. Well done!
Fome & GipFace - Okkusenman (Megaman 2)-Thanks to you two I am now addicted to this song. Bah! Of course, the only complaint is the obvious off-synch part in the chorus. Otherwise, I would say it was the perfect song ever (or something like that).
-A lot of fun to listen. The harmonies were well-done, and I'm quite impressed by Fome's range and falsetto. Wish he was mixed a little bit louder, though.
-Fome has a great voice, but in this song his voice doesn't really shine because it sounds like he is drowning with those high notes. Maybe the singers can try a lower song next time and hopefully, it will be great since both have great voices!
-I really really like your version of this song. And I like that you sound just like some Japanese visual kei singers. This was a really good song choice. Congrats for hitting all the high notes! The harmonies are done well too.
Naoko & Shurin - Best Friend (Fushigi Yuugi)-Very quiet song. Some parts sounds just too flat. Otherwise, is a nice version.
-Just needs a little more oomph.
-Not sure this was the best song choice for your voices, though I did think you carried the chorus was. I'm not familiar with the song, but parts of the vocals here seemed too sharp, and other times too flat... can't say for sure though.
-Nice song, but off tune in some parts.
-This song choice wasn’t the best. The song is really boring and you lacked in energy.

Congrats to the winners!!!! Well deserved win for Biiru and Hina.
I'm a little confused though by:
2. Mnemosyne & Li Jianliang
4. Mnemosyne & Atashi
I thought Li Jianliang was Atashi? Or am I just losing my mind, because that's quite possible too.
Gratz all, I thought the Haruhi song was the best too. Damn, it sounded so much like the original.
:twitch: Whoa... what? #3 in popular vote? Wow.
Most of the credit goes to chibi nasu of course - thanks for choosing that song and singing with me. :D Thanks to kcl822 for her comments.
Moment did not feel as right as Yureta Kandagawa did for me. :heh: The latter just felt... perfect. Also, the harmony in the former was supposed to be louder - maybe my ears weren't working that day. My fault for mixing it too low. :uhoh:Congrats to the Hare Hare Yukai pair - I thought you sounded great.
Re: Waltz
PS: your falsetto needs to go a bit higher than that.
GipFace does great falsettos, as usual.
You've got to be kidding. I did not falsetto once in the song because I knew there would be no chance of contention if I weaseled into it (The entries with falsetto fared poorly: Ever Stay Snow got 6.63 [37th place out of 78 entries], and Feel Coming Spring Piano got third-last!). That C5 was not falsetto, and I am disappointed that people cannot discern the difference. *cries*
Random trivia: Highest note I can hit with falsetto is E6. No, you'll never hear me sing it because not even Canta Per Me goes that high. ~_~
Second place is a very close one
So I guess we lost by half a point or something, right? :)
Re: Sakuranbo Kiss
The most glaring thing for me was that the timing was a bit off in the chorus.
What got to me though was the not so good synchronization of the voices. Try better sync next time!
Yeah, I was late transitioning from the harmony to the creepy voice at the very end. After doing the rest of the song without any sync errors, I didn't feel like doing a retake.
Well, don't let my comments put a damper into things, because they really shouldn't. I just have high personal expectations every time I enter. Three cheers to Hina and Beer for winning it all! ^_^
(I gave them a 9... my lone 10 pick didn't make the top five...)
From the bottom of my heart, I'd like to thank everyone who was involved in the contest. I'd also like to thank my partners, Jiah, Li Jianliang, and Fome, for being exceptional people to work with. They were very nice and were open to my crazy suggestions (I picked all the songs we did). I had a lot of fun doing every entry, and have no reservations about recommending them to anyone for next time!
Hmm... Shiemi really needs to win one day. She is the best singer that still hasn't won one yet. I'm rooting for you, Shiemi!
One last thing: I noticed you included ALL my comments. You detectives now have a one in three chance of guessing which comments are from me. However, there are an uneven number of comments per person. Did you filter out any of the nasty stuff? I think the comments should be uncensored.
Oh well. See you all next season... hopefully this winter! (come on kcl, you know you waaaant to)

Hey Gip, thanks for sticking with me in spite of some technical issues on my side. And I agree, I've always felt that Shiemi should have won at some point. It's almost as if she's given up a little bit on winning first place (just my conjecture). I voted her one of the highest scores in her first ever entry.

Yay. congrats to the winners! :D You really deserved it :)
*misses her comments but kcl prolly had a good reason for it*?
Congrats to Biiru and Hina and the people that made it to second and third! Cz! You really made it to the first three this time! :)
Fome and GipFace - Thanks for your comments. Just noticed them so editing this post. (Didn't notice them before because I am browsing this quickly from work! I am supposed to be scanning my students' works! :heh:) Just wanted to say thank you for the encouragement (yes, I haven't been putting much of an effort due to depression that comes from personal problems so Fome is quite spot on), but also remind you that I did win once by popular vote for the song 'Loop' in 2005. ;) Anyway, thanks you two. *hugs*
What..what.. WHAT??!!!
We.. won..?
I can't believe this O__O
xDD

Thank kcl :)
Btw, if someone has troubles reading the comments xD get this (http://download.yousendit.com/D6B26C2D5761B784). It contains a word document with comments/grades/almost everything.
Ho ho ho, that grade sheet is awesome. You make a great judge~
Isn't timing and tempo the same thing? Anyway, I'd put down a fifth category "tilt" which would be simply judge bias, since it's very possible to get 2.5 for all categories while sounding like a complete robot (Miku Hatsune *ducks*). What's that word... emotion? Yeah.
Cool rubric. I say toss tempo too. I think within "tilt," you can encompass things like emotion, originality, and endurance when applicable.

wow, really? 2nd/3rd? neat-o! thanks to Li Jianliang for being my partner... she was awesomely awesome...! yay!
and congratulations to Hina and Biiru!
eh heh.... the lyrical mistakes and timing problems were my fault... I only gave poor Misa like... 3 hours to record the song... (SORRY, MISAMISA!!!!) and the weird harmonies were my fault too... i kind of started making them up as I went... ^^;;
okay, that's it!
oh! also! thanks to everybody who commented!

I think there may have been a few people who didn't comment on all the entries, hence why some entries have more comments than others. And because we don't comment on our own entries. I don't think any comments were censored out.
Congratulations to the Winners! (Biiru & Hina) and also Gratz to those that made it to 2nd and
3rd place!!! ^_^
In fact, everyone did a great job *thumbs up*!!
Hope to see you all back in the next competition =)
Oh, one more thing (this is for Meiyo): *giggles* it's normal for people to get confused and start thinking "oh maybe a third person/third voice is involved in this entry" hehehe xD but it's ok, you were not the only one who thought of it, in fact, my other sister when she first listened to it, she was like, dang you! how could you put so many people singing just one song? haha xP
well the thing is that, stakato (my youngest sister) and I wanted to try out singing in different pitch ranges and hence, create new harmony rather than stick with the original one ^^
but in turn we never thought we created a sound of many voices =P
haha anywayz, thanks everyone for the comments!!
