Kawaii ^^ cute and funny, what's not to like about her? After ep.04, I am rather intrigued as concerns her background, the accident and whatnot. And why the fixation on stars? I wonder...
Well, Fuko is Fuko. What I like about her is she's always energetic and the fact that she always get lost in her thoughts....it's quite her charm. Oh and she seems to have a fascination with stars.
Her seiyu does an excellent job of bringing her to life, I think.
Fuko is very charming, has an abundance of cuteness, and after episode 4; an aura of mystery. Cyz mentioned that she gets lost in her thoughts, and I concur.
Her name, is it Fuko or Fuuko? I've seen both spellings...
Noooo... I missed the grand opening of Fuko-sama's new thread!!
Anyways, her energy and kawaii-ness has what has drawn me in. The way she acts around Tomoya is hilarious, and with this new revelation in Episode 4... I wonder what new things will occur... I'm guessing some emo-ness will come from her next.
Her name, is it Fuko or Fuuko? I've seen both spellings...
Technically it is Fuuko (風子)... but apparently the official romaji from merchandising and the opening sequence of the anime is Fuko.

Well, the thing is double letter is another way to put stress on it, instead of the ~
"in practice", it should be Fūko (thus the "fuuko" seen somewhere).
But since the romaji "system" isn't exactly universal, you see "simplier" version of such, so Fuko (other example : Sousuke/Sôsuke -> Sosuke, Ooishi/Ôishi -> Oishi, etc etc)
Both are valid, though most use "fuko" because it is like this in the opening :heh:
as a little trivia, IF i'm not mistaken, her first name is written with the kanji of "wind" ( かぜ - Kaze/ ふう - Fuu), 風子
with a very literal translation, she can be called "child of the wind" or something of that sort ^^"

Fuko seems energetic and full of life. I couldnt help but laugh when she patted down Tomoya. I do agree with Cyz and Echoes in that Fuko gets lost in her own thoughts very easily, but its another one of those quirks that makes her so cute and funny. as for the stars, who knows, and hopefully we will find out the reason for the fascination in upcoming episodes...

What I'm wondering about is why is the classroom that Fuuko's whittling stars in always empty? Is everyone just afraid of her or something? Or do they normally hold class there, and just ignore her?
i love Fuko. i think its funny how she goes through the whole basketball thing in eps 2 and 3 before doing a high five for Tomoya. her character is so adorable.
Fuko is very much like Ayu from Kanon, no? Both are kawaii, energetic, basically moe filled characters. Can I plz has Fuko 4 mah imouto? Kthxbai.

If you're talking about the floating bubble stars, those are product of Fuu-chan's extremely wild imagination :heh:
But if you're talking about the star she's carving... I'll let your extremely wild imagination decide it :heh:
Geh... that's too much of a hint :heh:

That's the old school building, also the building where the theatre club was at, Fuuko use the classroom next door to carve her starfish(...)

I'm guessing that the yellow hair is actually dyed, given Sunohara's hair color in the future, and the color of his sister's hair.
Also, there IS "silver" hair: It's called Platium Blonde (although I doubt it'll be natural for the Japanese to have it.)
Yay!!! Fuko FTW!!!They made her out to be an extremely like-able and moe moe character. Her past seems to be a mystery. The little plot clues they gave at the end of ep4 seem to point that she was in some sort of accident. Hm...it would be interesting if she did turn out to be a ghost. How would they explain her physical interaction with the main characters. Everyone knows ghost can't manipulate physical objects much less touch human beings.

...Did you watch Kanon?
Please, that's a big spoiler! And yes, Kanon is also one of Key's works, and just by deduction (I haven't played Clannad yet), I'm thoroughly convinced, based on Kanon, that Fu-chan is a ghost/spirit or something like it. This is so far really the most exciting plot of Clannad, so I'm looking forward to how this is going to turn out.
Fuko's facial expressions are very cute. One of my favorite characters in Clannad.
shes so cute and small and seems the anime is showing us everything
...Did you watch Kanon?
I did and I was hoping it wouldn't turn out that way. Episode 5 shot my hopes down. So much for that. -_-
As much as I like Fuko's character, I don't think KyoAni did a good job with her. Somehow I just don't feel any emotional attachment to Fuko, and her story is one of the most emotional in CLANNAD. I guess that the first arc is not going to be a tearjerker like Matoko's in Kanon.
She looks cute too... Even before I see the anime...
No wonder one of my friends fall in love with her .... ;)

Kind of sad how the Kotomi thread has more posts than this one, even though Kotomi has had about 2 minutes of screentime and we're on Fuko's arc...;_; poor unloved Fuko-chan...
Hahaha... it's because of the rule "No Campaigning"... though I am silently doing that with my avatar, sig and custom status...
I love Fuko. But I think that her arc should wrap up soon-ish if they wish to fit in the other girls' arcs... I'd be disappointed with the end, but heck, I wanna see more of the story! :p

The game IS the novel.
So she is the ghost of the school? Kinda feel sad that her sister cannot see her in Esp 6. :(
But really give in to her reaction and her actions too.
But wait, I felt like her sister is more like the spirit than Fuko

Her arc is boring.
You could at the very least supply your opinion with a why instead of so bluntly posting it here. I personally enjoyed her arc and thought it served as a good supporter for Tomoya x Nagisa relationship... though it just got a little repetitive at the end... but it provides a really good build up to the finale next week for Fuuko.

so far she is the only one who can bring out the bad side of tomoya. i will never forget how he stuck the drink straw up her nostril. that is just so wickedly funny! after all tomoya is decently civil with every character except her and sunohara and let's not go into details about the exasperating sunohara over here :heh:. the way tomoya got her falling for his tricks just makes her more endearing.
I have been watching Kanon recently and i have to say that Fuko's character seems to remind me a lot of Makoto in Kanon. the reason is in the spoiler...
When Makoto began to lose her abilities as a human and how was unable to do anything except be with the one she cared most for. Fuko is similar in the fact that everyone used to be able to see her but now she is being forgotten by everyone, especially those who go to see the real Fuko Ibuki in the hospital.

I greatly admire this girl. She has become one of the most inspirational fictional characters I've ever seen, right up there with Atticus Finch, Eikichi Onizuka, Tohru Honda, Simon, Kamina, and Shuzo Matsutani for me.
I know a lot of people bash her and all, and I'm not going to jump on the people who think this because it's their opinion after all and they have the right to it, but I'll defend her and say why I like her so much.
First of all, she's in a pretty tough situation. One many would consider horrible and even impossible to live with; a very sad, lonely existence. Aside from being in a coma, she is more or less invisible to people. The person she loves the most, her older sister, can't even see all the effort she puts into helping her out and the chances of her actually succeeding in her task are pretty slim. Fuko is also doomed to be alone. She is an introvert by nature but even if she were an extrovert, she would not be able to keep any of the friends she makes. Everyone, even the most loyal of friends and the people who would love her and cherish her for who she is will forget her. In essence, she doesn't even exist and because of that no one would really care what happens to her. And it's clear from her expression during the scene where Tomoya and Nagisa make her meet with Kouko that she's not so immature as to not realize her fate.
But in spite of this and the pain she suffers, she keeps fighting and giving people starfish even when she knows her chances of success are very slim by virtue of the fact that she'll be forgotten. And for me and perhaps for a lot of people that's why episode 9 is so moving.
When everyone shows up to her wedding, it is so satisfying that it is tear-jerking. It didn't make me cry, but it deeply resonated within me. Everything she went through turns out to be completely worth it. It's very much like how the best underdog stories work.
In spite of her immaturity, Fuko's someone who I would call a real hero, or um a heroine. I admire her even more so because I know I'm not as strong-willed and selfless as she is.

Fuko's arc was pleasantly surprising to me. She was one of the first characters that really piqued my interest, and her story turned out to be quite moving. At first, I thought her story was going to be a lot like Ayu from Kanon, but they really took it in a different direction. It kind of reminds me of a "Steal this Hook" situation, where you start with a basic concept, then build in many different directions with it.
The most important trait about Fuko is mentioned repeatedly in the show, that she is an extremely hard worker. Anyone who is as shy and introverted as Fuko knows just how hard it can be to approach someone you don't know. As such, walking up to someone you don't know and saying "Please! Take This!" is as hard as anything in the world. I'd like like to point out how perfectly the seiyuu does this one line. Every time Fuko asks someone to take one of the starfish she says "Kore douzo," which is essentially "please accept this," with just the right tone. You can hear in her voice that she's apprehensive about if they'll take it, and there is a certain awkwardness as well. It's almost as if there were an inner dialogue just before each person.
"Alright, here I go. Just have to ask him to take this."
"What if he says no, though?"
"What if he doesn't even see me?"
"But if I don't do this, no one will come to my sister's wedding."
"But if I say it wrong, he won't come either."
"I'll just get it over with."
That sort of motivation and internal dialogue seems to come out every time in what could have become very old and very forced very fast. For me, how hard Fuko worked made the end much stronger. She seemed happy with just Nagisa and Tomoya making it to the wedding. I mean, her goal was to make her sister's wedding better, and she had done just that. So, when EVERYONE showed up, it really showed how she went above and beyond the call of duty. So, even if people didn't remember her, she still achieved her goal.

I think she is cute and all (somewhat stupid but thats cute too). What i don't understand is how come she can feel pain? I guess i should just throw common sense away in this anime and just look at the pretty pictures.
I think she is cute and all (somewhat stupid but thats cute too). What i don't understand is how come she can feel pain? I guess i should just throw common sense away in this anime and just look at the pretty pictures.Do you mean emotional pain or physical pain? I take it as physical pain.
Its good to ignore reality when you watch anime, but they are not just pretty pictures.Fuko's 'spiritual form' could be a mental image, an avatar of herself. We are able to percieve her even though she's not supposed to be there because she directly influenced our minds to let us know and believe that she's there.
How did she cause such an influence? I believe that she has a strong mental attachment to a certain object that allows her to leave a psychic imprint on it. Yep and that object is the piece of wooden starfish. Those who get in contact with the wooden starfish would be able to percieve Fuko.
When you are able to percieve Fuko, your brain will then work in a way treating Fuko as just another normal human being. Seeing that her hands are in bandages because of cuts, your brain will 'know' that if a person catches a basketball with those hands, it will be painful.
A little far-fetched this time, not sure if it made good sense.

I find her struggle against an impossible situation to be really captivating. KyoAni has done it in such a way that I cannot help but to cheer her on.

Does anyone else get a little feeling that she is a bit of a homosexual? Might just be me, but she seems to despise the male main character greatly by the fact that they are always screaming at each other and insulting him a lot without any hint of sarcasm and exposes a somewhat strong attraction with Nagisa.

Normally it does bring up all sorts of ethical issues, but if a coma patient is spirtually up and walking around, then I would seriously hesitate to ever rule dead until her heart stops. Fuko breaks the usual ethical dilemma.
I'm sure she does like Tomoya and appreciates him as a friend, she's just bad at expressing herself. :p
Perhaps you are right. ^^ I just wished she would have at least said something like that in her own words, maybe even just to Nagisa if she's embarrassed about it, but instead what we see and hear is something opposite. It all comes down to Nagisa trying to convince him that Fuko likes and appreciates him, not very convincingly. :heh:

I don't see how Tomoyo Sakagami has more votes than Fuko seeing as you barely see her in the anime.

Of course they are pointless!! Nobody is capable of remembering her for more than a few seconds so a continuing storyline is completely impossible. Unless she gets back some more brain activity she's good for nothing except for comedy relief.
i love her random appearances because she tries her best to help everyone but it usually fails and she just walks off screen as if nothing happened. Plus her entrance is absolutely KAWAII~
Am I the only one that doesn't like her random appearances? Ok, it's not like I dislike the character, nor do I favor her that much, it's just that, can't they just let her rest? I mean, it's not like she plays a role in the series after everyone's forgotten about her so it just feels kind of weird to have her appear when she's not even supposed to be there. The random appearances do, well, feel pretty much too random to me.

Hmm... I guess you get both sides to this argument. After Air and slightly less in Kanon, people were complaining that the other heroines of the story get dumped after their arcs and are never heard of again. With Fuko, her story allows it so that you know she's at least still around and hasn't completely disappeared off the face of the Earth.

Agreed. :3
Random is random. There is no such thing as too random, as random has no limits. Therefore it earns the name random, in such it is usually basically pointless and off topic. :3 In a forum labled 'random' you would basically have everything from A-Z and more, because there is no limit to the discussion as basically anything is allowed to be discussed.

Unfortunately I'll have to disagree with almost everyone. Even the hit counter was more funny than Fuko's random appearances. I just don't think it's funny because every time Fuko appears and no one remembers her, no matter how funny her randomness is, I just feel sad inside. Until now I still think that Fuko's arc is the best so far, and seeing her as comic relief isn't going to impress me. Although her second random appearance made me smile in an indecisive way, her first appearance, I think, was just bad.
Of course this is all opinion. You can love Fuko all you please.
To me Fuko's random appearance tells me that she's just trying to repay everyone who tried to help her. She appears when people are in need, just that she can't get things done, its the thought that counts. She wants to help so much that she generates astral projections again.
Its not totally meaningless for her to randomly appear.
Exactly. Fuko wants to help those who helped her, so therefore it does have a meaning. xD

Well, I just started watching this series, and I just finished episode 9. It was AMAZING. I tried holding back the tears.... I failed. The sujective point of view of Tomoya and Nagisa was really cool, how when they remembered Fuko appeared. I really loved the symbolism of the little starfish. It was really stupid at first, but ended up being incredibly touching. I don't know how they did it, but it her character was VERY well-done.

I love her character; cute and funny in a silly yet non-annoying way. =p
As for the appearances - I was pretty confused by it at first too, though; however considering it's KyoAni, the inception of such prominent scenes would likely have been spawned from original source material.
Aren't the "random appearances" based off the Fuuko Master and Fuuko Ninja titles you can obtain during her respective route in the game? Although I recall her only showing up specifically in Tomoyo's route, but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt for the studio to tweak that a bit for the anime.

Her arc is boring.
Shun the non-believer! Shuuun!
Shun the non-believer! Shuuun!
Agreeing on that as well. xD I don't really see how she or her arc is boring anyways. D:
Fuko is not boring. None of Clannad's character is boring. Her arc is very touched in the end, when she was holding Nagisa and Tomoya's hands and telling them about her "very happy time".
I thought that I won't be able to see her again, but now anytime you who went to her sister's wedding or have a starfish-shaped stuff, you can summon her =))
I loved Fuko's latest appearance in episode 17. You never know what to expect. xD

I actually found Fuuko's arc to be more interesting than Kotomi's arc, personally. And more interesting than what we've seen of Kyou's so far.
I really loved Fuko's arc, but her random appearances destroy the mood left from ep 9 and this was the most intense and emotional so far. :(
i don't know if her appearances really destroy the feeling after episode 9. when the Fuko arc ended i was afraid I'd never see my favorite character again, but her appearances really are nice and to me it just keeps her clueless personality around in the series.

I doubt this is now Kyou's arc, as Tomoyo seems to be getting more attention, and the episode ended with her being "saved" by Tomoya. Me and the other tsunderekko fans will just have to wati a couple of episodes.

Yeah, I mildly disliked the fact that in Kanon and Air, once a character's arc had finished, she didn't really appear again until the end of the series. Fongo's random appearances and the fact that Mamiko Noto Kotomi spelled with three hiragana still has appearances makes me happy.
Oh, and as of roughly seven AM PST today, Fuko has been renamed Fongo.

Her conversations with Tomoya in the after story are just hilarious... "I possess extremely average earthling thinking " "If you have average thinking, the world would be destroyed in 3 days"
I dunno... she's still not my favorite, but she is really funny.
edit: and who can resist her fun in 18?
ep 18 tops her random appearances. she appears bearing food for tomoya to eat...while the food did look questionable, if Fuko-chan made it, i might try it

Seriously. When I heard that background scream on her "hitode choux a la creme" followed by her all in hitode la la land that had me on the floor.

I'm looking for a little help. This was the only place to post my gf wants to cosplay as Fuko for a con in Colorado called Anime Wasabi. We are having a difficult time finding a wig. If any seasoned cosplayers can help us track down this wig to purchase online it would eb greatly appreciated. This girl (http://www.cosplay.com/photo/1401986/)'s hair is a good example of what we are looking for...
when u finish that cosplay, i'd like to see a pic of it. Fuko is my favorite character

Yesh, you can see her hugging Ushio. You can only see her back, and her kawaii hair ribbon, but that is most certainly Fuko. She is missing from the ED however.
i agree that she is in the OP. and yes it was Ushio she is hugging.
She's definitely hugging Ushio in the opening, which means that she will definitely show up in random places again... unless, of course, it was just hypothetical. I, personally, hope for the former to be true.

I dont think she should show up randomly this season. Instead save it for where it'll have the most impact if you get what I mean.
Yes, this is Fuuko hugging Ushio in the opening.
Well, there will be some main scenes with Fuuko according to the game.
And the last one scene in the game is with Fuuko and Ushio too.
So it's a given that she'll show up then? Sweet. I need more "dozo!" in my life, if only a little bit.
~:Evayo:~
Btw, why topic is named "Fuko" instead of "Fuuko" (風子) ? It's more correct, isn't ?
Btw, why topic is named "Fuko" instead of "Fuuko" (風子) ? It's more correct, isn't ?
Wasn't it spelled "Fuko" in the Meg Mell OP? I would typically go by how it's spelled in the show itself, unless of course the game says otherwise.
~:Evayo:~
The Kanji is 風子. The first Kanji is read as Fuu, or Fū (which means wind). The second one reads as ko (child). So the romanization can be made either as Fuuko or Fūko, depending on the romanization system you are using. In either case it is a long u when pronouncing it.

That is correct. We had this discussion last year as well, and according to official romanisations, Fuko has been used in the OP as well as in other merchandise.
Well, thank goodness for that. Misunderstandings scare me.

A simple(?) question, but how old is Fuuko? I think I keep mixing up her age. I was thinking that she's probably 14 or so because she just entered her first year of high school. But then there's the time she's in her coma (um, how long was it?), so that should make her a little older. I remember Tomoya saying something like, "she's the same age as me".
Well...she'd be a 10th grader, so 14-15 years old. Though I don't remember when they mentioned the accident taking place. The talk of a ghost girl seemed new, so I imagine it was that year...so she's two years younger than Tomoya (and three younger than Nagisa).
I'm wondering when the next time we see her will be. (minus the party hat I imagine)

She is the same age as Tomoya. So she is 17 at the start of the series, 18/19 by episode 16 and 23/24 after the timeskip. But she still looks like an 8 year-old. :p

Fuko (and I think it's safe now that she's returned to the series) looks like she's being cared for by Yoshino and Kouko. Remember, she might be abour 23 years old by this point, but her mind is still that of a high-school student (and might even be less than that).
For a 23 year-old to be THAT CUTE.... whoaaaa~

It has been mentioned that Fuuko is the same age as Tomoya (as well as the Fuji twins and Youhei) quite a number of times throughout 2nd and 1st season if I am not wrong.
She joined high school at 15 and met a car accident on the first day. She slept through Tomoya's marriage, Nagisa's 2nd retention and her death + 5 years for Ushio's growing up, making her to be around 23-24.
But that is ridiculous for her to STILL looking like a freshman! Even when you are in coma you age, and it is AMEEZZZZIINGGGUUU that she is still so cute.
Still remembered S1 when she was repeatedly teased by Tomoya, having drinks squirted up her nose and being fooled by Ryou into thinking that SHE is Tomoya ("stop using my sister for pranks!" and "wow there are three!").

Fuuko as of season 2 is already awake and about, though as mentioned by others she's in her mid-twenties and STILL looks like how she was in Season 1... And has gotten it into her head to kidnap Ushio and make Tomoya's daughter her little sister. She's PERSISTENT about it too.
Wouldn't be Fuuko if she wasn't weird like that. No longer handing out or carving wooden starfish...but Ushio is as good as a starfish to Fuuko.

Fuuko After huh... well, if the arc gives you the option of letting Fuuko recall prior event in S1 Clannad, things can get very interesting on the dramatic side. I think it'll be left to the hands of the fanfic writers to decide how would that impact her as she lives with the Okazakis'.
