AnimeNewsNetwork is reporting about the coming Hollywood adaptation of Dragonball:

Twentieth Century Fox has officially announced that it signed director James Wong (Final Destination, X-Files television series, The One) and casted twenty-five-year-old Justin Chatwin (War of the Worlds, The Invisible, Lost television series) in the lead role of Goku for the movie adaptation of Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball action manga. According to the Variety newspaper, filming is set to begin this month, and the film is slated to open worldwide on August 15, 2008. James Marsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Spike, Smallville’s Brainiac) will play the antagonist Piccolo, and Stephen Chow, of Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer fame, is producing the project.

Wong will not only direct the film, but he also rewrote an earlier script that was submitted by Ben Ramsey (The Big Hit). According to The Hollywood Reporter newspaper, the story centers around the alien Goku as an adult as he protects Earth — the very planet he was sent to destroy. Chatwin is training under the stunt firm 87Eleven (The Matrix, The Bourne Supremacy, 300). Other roles are still being casted. Previous reports have indicated that shooting will take place near Montreal, Canada and in Mexico, and that Heroes actor James Kyson Lee is auditioning for the role of Yamcha.

Between 1984 and 1995, Toriyama created 519 installments of the original manga for the publisher Shueisha and its Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. The manga’s 42 compiled volumes have sold over 150 million copies in Japan and over 300 million copies worldwide. Both the manga and its anime adaptations (Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z) have enjoyed success in countries in Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. The 17 animated movies in the franchise have been seen a record 49 million times in Japanese theaters. Fox first acquired the live-action film rights to Dragon Ball in 2002.

I’m not sure what to think. The inclusion of Stephen Chow, who is famous for doing comedies, has me a bit worried. I would hope they do a fairly good adaption to the long running series. Unfortunately I will be very shocked if it turns out to be anything but terrible.

I can't imagine a DBZ movie without beams, flying, strange animals and umm...Nimbus?

There's just so much to do - I assume they'll just go up to the Vegeta arc in the first movie (heck, end it at Raditz even). Maybe they'll even make an original script (I wouldn't be against it).

I can't even decide if I'm against this or not. I heard about it awhile back but I dismissed it since that Neon Genesis movie flopped too. Who knows? Maybe this'll be more successful than Transformers.

I can see the characters not looking exactly like how they are meant to be in the manga or anime, but the scary thought of finding this movie to be as epic as how everyone first doubt Transformers...now thats scary

But I really don't see a point in covering Dragonball Z in movie form...theres too much in the story to cover and it may take up to 20 sequels to cover all the stories in DBZ...I'm just guessing but....WHY?! Why must Hollywood take some anime show that is really made out of fantasy and making it into the big screen using the current technology movie making methods?

I'm kind of skeptical about this movie...it sounds it might bomb real hard...and the elements that make DBZ unique really isn't meant to be seen in real life (fighting in fast speed, screaming, shouting, powering up...)

I don't expect anything from this at all. And maybe a lot of people have heard the term Dragon Ball, but not know what it is (I thought this was a kid/teen thing).

It could be made a bit realistic in Dragon Ball (without all the crazy powerups), but if they made a DBZ live movie, that's going to be horrible.

This will probably count among the worst movie adaptations of all time.

The very reason it was adapted from the comic into animation instead of live action is because it couldn't be done properly in live action.

If--and this is one of the largest "if"s in all history--it can turn out to be a good film that's true in spirit to the original... Then the rest of Hollywood should stop trying and just crown James Wong the King of Film.

Not sure why there bothering making a movie now with the series not being popular as it once was, I mean is the series even airing on TV anymore? This is a movie that should have been done 3-5 years ago when the series was at it's height of popularity.

Failure or not, I'm checking this out just for the sakes of watching it. I did used to be a major fan of Dragonball Z several years ago - and it might be a laugh to see what they come up with. Though I'm not desperate either, not too bothered about it I just hope Hollywood don't pick up some decent anime series and ruin them.

Well DB in all it's series has a good bit of comedic elements, so that shouldn't be your biggest worry...

Man I was hoping Tom Welling (Smallville) was gonna get the role...I really saw him as fitting Goku in looks and in stature (Doesn't hurt he plays Superman on TV)...So the gay son of Kevin Nealon in "WEEDS" is gonna be Goku? :twitch: He doesn't seem buff enuff at all..Kind of a dainty guy to be honest...I guess they are going the Topher Grace as Venom route like Spiderman in casting a skinny guy for a buff guy's role...Kinda sucks when they pick a lead you don't like, but he can grow on me I suppose (Hell I hated when they casted Toby Mcguire as spidey at first)...

Anyways it seems the low expectations is gonna help this movie, but however flawed it will be it won't be worse than the Street Fighter Movie that's for sure...With a big studio like Fox, perhaps some story elements may be screwed, but I expect really great visual fight scenes unlike some of you who have forgotten how advanced FX have become...

One thing that is encouraging is that they went out and got some Asian influences to write, direct, and appear in the film...So that's better than say, hiring a hack like Micheal Bay to do it or some other Hollywood generic specialist...I can't wait til this thing comes out so we can bash and//or like and/or love and//or love to hate the hell outta it^^...

I don't understand the motives of the producers. Who are they marketing to? Today's kids won't appreciate it because the show is too old. The dragonball generation, which I think in North America would be older teens, will have grown out of it and will probably only watch for lulz. Unless they significantly change the mood/tone of the show adults won't be interested...and I'm having a tough time imagining how they would do that and still keep the crazy powerup super-saiyan-ness...how in the world will they do the effects and not make it incredibly corny?? So I can only see this one as a gigantic bust. Whose bright idea was it to do this...

I'm hoping they do the "over 9000" line somewhere, though.

Unlike all of you who're being so negative, I think it'll be kick ass XD Just to see everyone go Super Saiyan, and Goku going Super Saiyan 3, will totally make my day. I am definitely going to the midnight premiere of that movie and cosplaying as a female Goku! And I know a LOT of people (especially the teens who grew up watching it) will go see it, because it was a show of their childhood that they loved and it'll bring back the good kind of nostalgia *nods* And honestly, I could care less if it sucked, just seeing Dragon Ball Z again is good enough for me. It's my all-time favorite old school anime of all time <3

Am I the only one who thinks Stephen Chow is perfect for this? Think about it, look back on Kung Fu Hustle and tell me that it doesn't capture the comedic aspects of DBZ.

I don't know, maybe it's because I'm a nonfan, but I don't understand how anyone can expect Hollywood to take this seriously. It's going to be bad, it's going to be hilarious. There's no way they could do it without making it a comedy. If they try to take it seriously, it'll just end up really bad.

As such, I wouldn't be surprised if, indeed, "IT'S OVER 9000!" will be shouted somewhere, if only just echoing in the credits.

On the plus side, it seems like they're going to be doing EARLY DBZ, not the later arcs which are REALLY outrageous. At least, that's how I read it. So, it seems like it'll be feasible to make a movie out of it, really. No three foot long mullet, or fusion dance. [-Weep.-]

Well, that's just my take on it, of course.

Chow funny comedian. Wong great director at action movies. I'm assuming great action scenes with ton's of pointless humor. It exactly like the anime. I see no problem there.

I can't agree with this because, transformers was directed by Michael Bay and 1/3 of the producers was Steven Spielberg. There known for making big incredible movies. It takes a while to name all there succesful movies. And when you hear there names you would automatically assume the movie will be good.

I do not know why, but I am excited by this movie if a little wary. Stephen Chow (of Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer fame...in America at least (his other Hong Kong films are all pretty good)) as producer will have a lot of control over the film, and the director James Wong has some great tv credits to his name (some of the best episodes of Milenium and X-Files were written by him (and he created the highly interesting if short lived series Space: Above and Beyond)). But, his directorial efforts have been a lackluster experience (I guess Final Destination can be considered good, but Black Christmas?) at best. So, I have some trepidition there. That being said, Jame Wong did re-write the story, so that could be a good thing.

Well I still think the technology is there to make a visually impressive movie at the very least (see Speed Racer), but they’re screwing the pooch by not including Oolong, Pular, or any of the animal characters….They’re also giving Goku a friend that was never in the anime//manga and prolly are gonna let him go to school…These people will never learn that keeping it simple and following the story that made it the most popular anime in American History is the way to go…So prepare for Yamcha and his dog Skip I guess :rolleyes:…

The Big Hit was witty, exciting, full of over the top humor and I left the theater with a smile on my face.

As far as I am concerned, Ben Ramsey as one of the writers is a big plus. I want the Dragonball movie to be packed full of over the top action and outrageous humor. Ben Ramsey has already proven he can deliver that. And of course he is only co-writing this, so perhaps you'll be happier with what James Wong brings to the screenplay.

and it definatley killed what was even left of Lou Diamond Phillips career at the time...Bookim Woodbine's career kinda flaked out after Big Hit aswell...But somehow the talentless Marky Mark survived, go figure >_>...Now I didn't say it isn't good BAD MOVIE watching...Me and my buddy would watch it just to talk about how terrible it was and laff at it, but there's no talking me out of this, I can plainly remember after I had watched that movie I honestly felt like it was the worst movie I had ever seen...You can forget $hit that happened in the movie, but you can never forget that feeling....

Ben Ramsey did not write the sreenplay. He wrote and adaptation that was more or less thrown out and re-written by James Wong, with, undoubtedly, additional help from Stephen Chow.

And for those that think Stephen Chow is not working on this film simply because he is the producer, you need to realize that the producer, at least 60-70% of the time, is the most influential part of the production of a film. He or she is the one who pulls everything together and makes sure the film is mostly presentable to an audience (often they fail :)). Only big name directors can effectively "bring their vision to the silver screen" or small indie directors who have limited budgets and limited help. So, the majority of the films made, in Hollywood or even across the seas in India, Hong Kong, or Japan, or extensively controlled by the producers. To think that Stephen Chow would not directly work with the film is silly.

i prayed for years that this wouldnt happen just goes to show how effective praying is. I wholehearted believe this is going to suck harder than a $2.00 prostitute. I love seeing something made into a movie but there others that just shouldnt be touched. I wasn't to worried about that (in fact I thought the hair and eyebrows were pretty nice facsimile), especially considering the fact that the main villian is supposedly Piccolo (the "last" villian in the manga/anime series), so having an older Goku isn't too bad. Rather I am worried about the fake background behind Yun-Fat Chow. Those rocks are simply too fake...like Spy Kids level fake.

I am mostly reserved for opinions and give things a chance and not jumping opinions but Dragonball shouldn't be made into a movie. Some Anime just ain't made to be a Live Action Movie, and is great as is as an Anime only instead IMO.

I knew this was going to be made into a movie for a while and wasn't thinking much of it, but after seeing the real tralier and Goku, I don't like it one bit.
I know I should give it a chance but so hard after seeing all that.

Oh well not that it matters, it has already been made and scenes are being reshot as I speak but man it's gonna bomb and give bad repoire for future Anime made into movies, tho comics are doing great as Batman/Iron Man and etc.
BubbleGum Crisis would be a so much a better Live-Action after seeing the suit they did for Iron Man. 4 Beautiful women with hardsuits fighting and with a great story and background (kinda following after Bladerunner), what more can you ask for? LOL..

It's Just the idea about the seven ball to grant a wish and an alien from nowhere pop up is the same.

The details, from the character (where's krillin and Master Roshi Turtle Shell?) to the background (what's with the sport car and clothing? This is not DB world but just Earth) are completely different. The movie itself may not be bad, but i think DB fans would feel like being mocked on.

I always thought Goku was asian, sort of like an asian monkey.

The cast doesn't look too awful. I mean, it's got some concrete actors.

Oh... wow. This will probably be quite fail, but can't be worse then Bloodrayne. I don't think anything can be as bad as that.

Saying that though watching that preview, it looks like they did spend some money on the special effects. Can't say much for Piccolo though.

Just look at it as something separate imo, don't go in expecting the anime and it might not be half bad. Besides it has CYF in it.

That is so true. Hopefully the actors put effort into the characters just to make it somewhat watchable. With Bloodrayne, that movie has some quality actors but they were given some of the crappiest dialog in film history.

I thought this was another ign prank when I heard about this i.e. Legend of Zelda movie. After watching the the trailer I'm just wondering what the point of calling it dragon ball z at all. Goku is a teenager in high school for gods sake! What happened to him being an alien from race who destroy planets raised in the wild buy a martial arts master till he was 8 (I think he was 8). In dragon ball z he gets married to Chichi has never gone to school and lives far away from the city with his son. YAY RUN ON SENTENCES! Also what happened to Roshi being a perverted old bald man living on a small island in the middle of no where with a turtle. There's more I can say but I think you get my point.

goku being white doesn't really matter because technically he's not any specific race on earth because he's not from earth. They really tacked on this average high school boy fulfills ancient prophecy and save the world... So uh any of you guys see the episode in dragon ball z where this happens?

If you saw the hot kissing scene in the trailer between Chi-Chi (asian chick) and Goku (white dude), it should be even more obvious that they are cashing in on dating trends. Its like they are saying that people who are into dragonball are probably white dudes with an asian fetish.

Mexican is a Nationality not a race. Race wise their Indian (native american) and White. Yeah white i.e. spaniards decent, hell my dad who is from Mexico, he's side of the family mostly have blond hair and blue eyes. If you live in the U.S. surf through the spanish channels you'll see a ton of natural blonds.

Oh and if you meant latino you'll still be wrong, latino is not a race either it's an ethnic group.

Anyways enough of me rambling.This will be a fun movie to watch with friends, I forsee lots of laughter involve when watching this movie. :D

Where is that place. Goku fights Piccolo in a tournament. What is with the power ranger backdrop? Piccolo even looks like a power ranger villain. If he has henchmen I might lose what non-existent hope I had for this movie.

EDIT: What's with the armor?! Where did he get this armor?! I'd rather have a high quality animated Dragonball Z movie from japan. Why live action in the first place? Is it really so much better then animation?

I finally watched this trailer today with a friend of mine and his comment to me was, Is this $hit airing on G4 or USA network?? LMMFAO :heh:...Well it looks like the budget for this movie is a little less than Steven Segal's last 5 movies, so right there your f**ked...After watching the fight between Neo and Mr. Smith in Matrix Revolutions, I thought for sure (if not great story-wise) the movie could atleast have some incredible CG fights...Unfortunately the budget doesn't even seem like:

"It's over 9000!!!!!!!"....

:p, Man I tried to be optimistic even after I found out the guy who wrote "The Big Hit" (Worst Movie Ever!) adapted this script, and with Jet Li and James Masters I thought maybe just maybe it'll surprise some people, but that trailer is something anyone with decent video-editing software can put together...Dudes were doing spin-jumps like that all the way back in Codename: American Eagle :p...God, where's Van Damme when you need him?

I'm so waiting for somebody to capture that stance-pic of Noku^^ and put a great big Kamehameha of FAIL in his hands...That would be nice...Deep down I'm hurting though, because this franchise will always be apart of my nostalgic heart...Oh well, dual-pistols Bulma for teh win...

Just wondering, what anime franchise do you people think can give anime to live-action films credit and actual substance like the Batman Begins film did to the "comic to movie" trend?

Its pretty obvious Dragonball the movie will set the "anime to live-action movie" direction waaay back. Theres a growing number of animes set to be turned into films, but Im glad some of my favourite animes haven't turned into films yet...if this is the caliber of the film.

Personally I don't care much for anime to live action adaptations really. You have more flexibility with animation. Again I'd rather see a high budget animated film of an anime I like. I just couldn't resist this topic because the concept of making an americanized dragonball live action movie is bound to give me some laughs.

To me, thats 2 positive things about the movie (VS loads of a load of crap). Stephen Chow and Ayumi Hamasaki. I'm no big fan of her's, but her songs are usually quite nice and she IS the jpop queen of japan.

you would think that hollywood must of realized that casting an american to play a japanese role would be...well not acceptable and people are not stupid enough to sip their kool-aid. Well, i guess we didn't learn our lesson when we casted van damme for guile, huh? I saw that trailer and that was like the worst piece of film, I've seen in a long time. Not since Batman and Robin, have i seen a genuine trainwreck of a motion picture franchise that will ooze dooky...I'm not that big of a fan of dbz, but even I know that this movie will be trash. Take a offense to it if you want, but you know it too. Personally, I recommend you spend that 10 dollars on gas or a couple rentals at blockbuster...it'll save you two hours of your life spent better than wasting it watch this abomination. Have a nice day...

That's one of the things that irks me about big Hollywood adaptations of novels/comics...they always leave some things out no matter how major or seemingly insginificant, and usually fill the void with something unrelated with no explanation. None the less I've stated in other forums that I'd probably see this movie, but more likely I'll order it as on demand PPV, since I doub't I'll pay $8.00 to see it at a theater, much less $6.00 to rent it at Blockbuster.

For a real life inactment the poster above is pretty damn good, but the story and other elements are iffy.

It is not like most of us hate it for how it is as much as for what it is (DB should really never be Live Action) as it brings some shame to the name.

Have you seen Matrix Revolutions? Have you seen Jumper? The technology for INCREDIBLE, HIGH-OCTANE, DBZ-LEVEL FIGHTING exists, but the trailer just shows SCi-Fi channel level special effects...I have no doubt a truly great DB movie could be made (If say the Producers of like a Dark Night or IRONMAN were behind it--Hell the guy that produced The Spirit, or 300 aswell) You could make a visually dope movie with a decent enuff story, but I don't see (based on the trailer) the money behind it to make it that great...
