This is the thread where we get to talk about this silly character known as Sunohara Youhei. I really haven't formed much of a sympathy for any of the main character of Clannad as of episode 7 but Sunohara along with that genius who is always in the library tingles my fancy. If he isn't getting a beat down by the soccer team (or was it rugby?) then he is getting his hiney kicked by Tomoyo. He is a busy-bee, that one. His character is great to watch because of the constant comedy he so effortlessly inspires. So let's get this thread started, shall we? :)Only couple of things to keep in mind when posting in this thread and they are:

Afraid I have to disagree with Monir here.:eek:
To me watching Youhei on screen is is like watching a Will Ferrell movie, which is something I would normally only do under duress. I get the same vibes from both in a person desperately trying to come across as offbeat and funny, but ultimately just ending up loud and annoying. I really hope this character is going somewhere in the anime. I'm used to visual novel leads having a friend who is a "dude", but I just can't bring myself to not want to strangle this character as he continues to repeat the same patterns over and over, which if it didn't work for me the first time, it's not going to make me laugh the next 4-5 times. In all honesty, I think the entirety of Clannad would be better off without him in it, because a) less time would have been focused on his rather banal and loutish antics and more on things that actually matter, such as Tomoya and Nagisa's relationship, and b) I really just plain find the character cringeworthy, but not in a good "Oh that silly boy" way, but more like in the way the Ingsoc views Emmanuel Goldstein during the Ten Minutes Hate.

Really starting to like Sunohara lately, liked his serious side he showed at the end of episode 7, alot different than his goofy side and getting beat up heh.

Sunohara is always serious. He's just stupid enough to make it look it is not serious at all, which is how brillant our Sunohara-sama is!
i have to agree with those who said Sunohara is funny. it really hard for me to control my laughter when i'm watching the series in class. i wonder when Sunohara will finally admit defeat from Tomoyo. you only get your ass kicked so many times before you realize that his methods are failing.

All the Tomoyo kicks have been done, apart from the 64 hit one, but I don't think it'll happen anymore, as it's supposed to be there on the founder's day.
Sunohara is always serious. He's just stupid enough to make it look it is not serious at all, which is how brillant our Sunohara-sama is!

I agree to the point that you make about how his chracter hasn't influenced the series in any way thus far, and his shinanigans are pretty repetitive... and yet I find him funny. You know how we sometime say that, "I'm not laughing at you, but with you"...? Well, in this case I'm laughing at him rather than "with him." And that's pretty good for a character who is so seemingly uninvolved to the story telling thus far. Yeap, he cracks me up. :heh:

Yeah, I have to admit, Clannad as a whole has been very enjoyable so far and the first Key/KyoAni show I've fallen in love with, but Sunohara is definitely my favorite character so far. I can't help giggling at him - Episode 4 is definitely my favorite so far with the mosaic face and the RP parody!

Well the Tomoyo fans are all for the TxT relationship so giving her to a side character will be a bit...the other fans might not have a problem but be aware that the Tomoyo fanbase is basically larger than the Nagisa and Kyou's fanbase accumulated somehow...And the Fuuko fanbase is probably going to take a neutral side on this as well...

I'm a huge Tomoyo fan and she is defiantly my favorite, but i would hate to see them end with a TxT ending, unless they manage to work in the Tomoyo after story(which i dont really see happening). I'd much prefer and enjoy a Sunohara&Tomoyo ending.
Happened with shuffle where the ending seemed really choppy when the writers mashed it together to please the larger Asa fanbase. If the game ends with X&Y keep X&Y i say!

A SLIGHT problem with that: If the anime follows the game, there are several "resets," meaning there could be a arc of TxT.

Does it really matter? It really looks like Nagisa and Tomoya are the OTP for the anime so even if an arc of TxT occurs, Tomoyo's still gonna be left out in the cold afterwards.
And Sunohara isn't such a bad guy, you know. Even if you think he's stupid, he's honest stupid.

Sunohara is getting cooler and cooler in the anime--he looks so mature compared to the one in game! Somehow seeing his cool moments makes me want to think Sunohara is the main character...

I agree with the top three posters.
I prefer the more mature, serious Sunohara though. It makes him seem like more of a character instead of just comedy relief. I'm glad I can dispose of my thought that he was just that, since I've never really enjoyed characters like that.
I juss hope Sunohara will keep becoming cooler, not just reseting himself completely after Fuko's arc.

his dialogue with tomoya about the cyborg and hologram made me burst out laughing. and the question from tomoya to him about the pain level between tomoyo and kyou adds the tears of and onto the laughter.
but yes, i was pleasantly surprised by how sunohara tries his very best about fuko.

Serious Sunohara is badass.
In this way, he's similar to Akio-san (Nagisa's dad). Always trying to act cool, always trying to be funny, but knows when to get serious when the need arises. Absolutely badass.

His family name "春原(Sunohara)" means "Springfield".
i.e.:
Meta-world/幻想世界(Gensou-sekai) is encroaching by "the Winter", and it is only spring that can save "the Girl(幻影世界の少女)"=Nagisa/Ushio and "the Junk(ガラクタ)"=Tomoya.
Same reason, "風子(Fuuko / a girl of wind)" may be a symbol of rescuer, too.

i have been playing the game for the last few days and i notice that sunohara's been toned down for the anime
in the game he is much more of a jerk and his friendship with tomoya is much more snarky then in the anime (tomoya almost always acts like he wishes that sunohara was'nt there)

Tomoya may seem like he dislikes Sunohara a lot of the time, but if you play the Sunohara route you'll see how they really feel about each other.
Sunohara has bad taste in music though...
His favourite song is Bomb A Head, the Tenjou Tenge OP. I hate that song :heh:

Gotta agree with you here; I think anybody who has played Sunohara's route in the visual novel can honestly say that there's much more awesomeness to him than meets the eye, and that's saying a lot because he's already a fantastic character.

I might just do that. Although dubs completlely ruin an anime.
It will be Japanese voiced though. And it's not animation, it's just a visual novel. And there are good dubs out there... but let's not further derail the thread.

Oh my...I just saw this last night and almost died laughing. Now I want to play the PS2 version to hear it voiced - it just doesn't seem right without hearing the ひいいいいいーー!

the HIIIIII was.. well insanely hillarious when i play the game (with voice patch of course)
and yea he has a bad taste in music, man too bad they didn't animate the part where tomoya dub sunohara's fav song with his own rap ;D that was funny

Everytime you start a new game, Tomoya replaces Sunohara's song with a different set of rap lyrics. I think there are up to 7 versions of the "Okazaki Rap".

Yes there is some. Including one where Sunohara is a chick and he's pretty hot. Though in that same Doujin Tomoyo is a guy

Wondering about something really trivial...
Why does Sunohara never have tea? Considering how often Okazaki requests it... :p
I lived in dormitories last year and never drank more tea in my life. All of my friends and I bought electric water boilers (which were really cheap) and had loads of tealeaves: black tea, Oolong tea, Pu'er tea, maccha, genmaicha, sencha, etc.
My memories of dorm life: tea and kimchi :heh:

I really dislike how Sunohara is shunned aside and such in everything. Yeah, he's funny but I think he purposefully provides himself as the butt end of jokes. In Clannad it seems that only one male matters; Tomoya. It's as if Sunohara is totally incapable of attracting any females, whilst every single girl likes cool guy Tomoya. It's annoying really, in harem anime only the main protagonist matters while his friend serves only a comedic purpose. If you saw his interaction with his sister I think you can say that he truly is lonely.

If it makes you feel any better, Sunohara was a lot better in Fuko's arc when he was struggling to remember.

Actually not to spoil anything but his arc in the game was really quite moving it would be a shame if they did not try to do it.

I think that his arc in the game is one of the better ones definately. It was one of the most touching arcs and a lot of fun to play. I really explored him well (I wanted to hurt him so much during parts of that arc xD But that just shows how good of a job they did with it)
sunohara is soo gullible, tomoyo can get him to do anything, that makes me laugh so much

What really takes the cake are his overly-exaggerated expressions which are quick to turn from happy to sour, and then add the fact in that his VA did a fantastic job in portraying that aspect.

depends on how they go about using characters in the second season. If they do use 2ndary characters his would be included. If not then well that would suck ass XD
Sunohara is, hands down, the best character in all of Clannad. Great voice work and great animation work really brings his character alive.

Ah, he's a lot funnier in the visual novel. Tsukkomi seems to work better there. He's still funny as hell though.

It looks like we'll finally get into character development with Sunohara, seeing as Ep. 4 will tell the background behind him and the soccer club.
We're seeing a different side of him this season. Definately cool :D
After ep 3.......ya Sunohara def got some respect lost from me.
he's such a d-bag to his sister.
