1) Hayate Ayasaki (Hayate no Gotoku)
2) Master Asia (G Gundam)
3) Lord Genome (TTGL)
4) Simon (TTGL)

_________________________________________
[Mod Edit]: just to ensure the competition will stay healthy and enjoyable for everyone, here is the list of rules for this peculiar Thread:
General Rules:
Absolutely no campaign posts allowed.
This includes posts containing ANY campaign verbiage whether in whole or in part. Contributing to the debate is encouraged, provided you do NOT add "VOTE ABCD!!!" (or similar to the post itself). Simply rebutting another's post or opinion with "XYZ sucks" is totally unacceptable.
To be clear:
Please do not create a post with the sole purpose to campaign for a character!
Do not add “VOTE FOR XYZ CHARACTER!!” anywhere in your post even if the intent isn't to purely campaign.
We want intelligent, decent and fun discussions about the weekly Rounds and the subsequent winners & losers.
No Image campaigning.
Do not create a post with an image or collage representation of a campaign poster. In other words: a PhotoShopped image of the character you want people to vote for with “vote for” text added to it.
Posting Etiquette:
Please do not cross post information about this tournament in other AnimeSuki threads.
Keep all Anime Saimoe Tournament posts, campaigns, character information, voting links, etc., within this thread only or in your signature (signature size limits still apply).
No "meta-posting".
Meaning: posting about another poster, the thread or about another post itself, is forbidden and will be deleted on-the-spot, regardless of intention. If you want to comment about another poster that’s off-topic and/or personal, send them a PM.
Any flame-baiting will be deleted and those people banned.
Please keep the thread positive, fun and clean. If your choice doesn’t win the Round and you can’t discuss the fact without complaining, swearing and baiting people into arguments, then don’t post.
Do not create image only posts.
You can, however, include an image with your discussion. If you want to visually support the character you’re voting for then please do so in the context of your original discussion and use only one or two images. We would encourage the use of “thumbnails” if possible (and please, no large images). PM the mods if you need help with posting thumbnail images.
I will nominate Clare if nobody else does.
Come on, she is GAR.:D
Already nominated Simon, Kamina, Nagasumi, Kaiji and Kittan. ^_^

I nominated:
Michishio Nagasumi (Seto no Hanayome) - 5
Itou Makoto (School Days) - 4 *OH NO I DIDN'T*
Yagami Kazuma (Kaze no Stigma) - 3
Ayasaki Hayate (Hayate the Combat Butler) - 2
Maebara Keiichi (Higurashi Kai) - 1
Not that much manliness on my list, but I included some possibly neglected characters. I'll be voting Kittan & co when the thing really starts.

5. Kittan (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann)
4. Claire Stanfield (Baccano)
3. Simon (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann)
2. Kamina (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann)
1. Medicine Seller (Mononoke)
Although unfortunately I actually wanted to vote in the opposite order. I didn't read carefully and I thought #1 had the most points.
I also forgot about November 11th (Darker than Black) I probably would have voted for him in place of Kittan just to mix up the series a bit.
Hei of course! .. he is so cool!
Being the kamina fan-girl I am, I will not rest until he won. :D
My list
5Kamina TTGL
4Lelouche Code Geass
3Simon TTGL
2Zaraki Kenpachi Bleach
1Clare Claymore
This tournament is a waste of time, since it's obvious from the start who is going to win. Unfortunately there is a shortage of manly characters in the anime world recently, so the choices are rather limited.

I nominated:
Capt. Ikamasa (Umisho)
Itoshiki (Zetsubou Sensei)
Minoru Shirashi (Lucky Star)
Kamina (TTGL)
And I seem to have forgotten my other choice.

Nanoha was in saiGAR last year, so I don't see why not ;)
Nanoha was in saiGAR last year, so I don't see why not ;)
Touche...
Seriously though, a tournament for manliness must be kept between men. Otherwise, characters like Revy(Black Lagoon) and Theresa(Claymore) would have to be included as well, since they are even more badass than Clare.
Nanoha, though...there are no words:heh:
I voted:
5 points: Yagami Kazuma (Kaze no Stigma)
The obvious choice.
4 points: Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass)
Mind-control, giant killer mecha, and pizza. What else can you ask for?
3 points: Shibuya Kazuya (Ghost Hunt)
Takes the spot for being able to blow stuff up with his mind.
2 points: Wei Zhijun (Darker than Black)
He blows people up with his blood, enough said.
1 point: Ali Al-Sarshes (Gundam 00)
Eh, why not? Not many mercs in anime.

Well, Nanoha pulled off an L-Block. We should probably nominate a handful of girls for this contest, just for the heck of it.

5. Kamina (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan)
4. Simon (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan)
3. Kittan (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan)
2. Ayasaki Hayate (Hayate no Gotoku)
1. It's a girl. That's all I'll tell you.
I won't reveal it on this board unless somebody mentions that same girl. If you're dying to know, PM me. Otherwise, take guesses, and I'll reveal whether it's wrong or right.
EDIT 2: To avoid the obvious guesses, she's not featured on my sig.

Shungo Ninomiya of Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya-kun (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Goshuushou-samaNinomiya-kun) is eligible, isn't he? The guy roundhouse kicks polar bears as part of his training. He also gets out of ropes by dislocating his shoulder and jumps out of a 4th story window.
And Hei/Lee Shenshun of Darker than Black, if I can figure out which name to use.

Rules directly taken from Saimoe Thread were added at the first post for your convenience.
Please be sure to read them and stick to them. If you have actually a problem with a fellow member with some argument etc, please use PM instead, or use the report http://forums.animesuki.com/images/as.style/default/buttons/report.gif feature, instead of rolling the fruitless debate out.
That said, I obviously don't expect any big brawl similar to the moe counterpart. However, rules will be enforced, so just stay clean, with good sportmanship and everyone will enjoy this competition ^^

My five nominations:

In Nanoha's case she is very Gar and obviously moe at the same. She is one the few MoeGar characters out there. Just look at my sig and Avatar. Name another magical girl that kick as much ass as Nanoha and name another Shounan hero that has less Emo moments the Nanoha.
As for the other female characters.
Clare
Teresa
Miria

form Claymore are all very Gar in there own rights.
PS. I define Gar as just Plain AWESOMESS that all must bow down to.

My thanks Daisuke, I've been quite over-burden as of late.
PS. I define Gar as just Plain AWESOMESS that all must bow down to.
Gar isn't really just "awesome", though. It's "manly/badarse", with badarse en-circling the awesome part. If we drop the whole manly moniker, Gar just becomes a synonym for "1337", "epic", "cool", "legendary", "win" etc., a mere sign of approval.
We don't need more of those when we have so many as is. :)
...
I'm still undecided as to who I want to vote for. As of right now, I'm looking into not well known characters to get them into the tournament and get some recognition - last year, I voted in Sleepy "John" Estes from Mad Bull 34 which got SOME attention, but not too much.
It'll take a while for me to dig up manly men who were merely forgotten.
At the same time, I'm neutral toward SaiGar's silent permission of females. While it does set us apart from SaiMoe in being less sexist, and while it is true women can be manly in the same way men can be womanly, there is potential for lame entries like "Konata". >_>
Also, at first I had no idea how powerful anime like Hayate and Lucky Star are as far as allowing entries from other shows. I mean, from Hayate:
1. The Cabbage
2. Nabeshin
3. Koichiro "Coach" Ohta

I understand where you're coming from, but...no! Shinji is the anti-GAR. Simon is a GAR-god. You can't even begin to compare them.
And I'm nominating Balalaika. That woman put chills down my spine during the twincest arc.

Two Shinji's come to mind: Fate Stay Night and Eva. Since you're talking about giant robots, I'll assume you meant Eva. Not that it means anything to me either way.
I must pray for forgiveness now, for I hath forgotten someone very important: Takahata Takamichi, of Negima!?. Even ignoring the manga, Takamichi got a huge boost for the remake. Chilling in the background with Eva, enjoying ramen and tea, saving the day from time to time...

Negima!? Negi Springfield
Goshūshō-sama Ninomiya-kun Ninomiya Shungo
Kaze no Stigma Yagami Kazuma
Darker than BLACK Hei
Darker than Black November 11

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai Ryugu Rena
Hayate the Combat Butler Ayasaki Hayate
Bleach Zaraki Kenpachi
Negima!? Takahata Takamichi
Clannad Okazaki Tomoya
Lucky Star Shiraishi Minoru
Code Geass - Lelouch of the Rebellion Lelouch Lamperouge
The 5 limit is mildly annoying, but whatever.
Agreed!
According to the official definition GAR is the epitome of what it means to be manly and badass. Otherwise we would just be voting for our favorite character. "AWESOME" is just not enough!
At the same time, I'm neutral toward SaiGar's silent permission of females. While it does set us apart from SaiMoe in being less sexist, and while it is true women can be manly in the same way men can be womanly, there is potential for lame entries like "Konata". >_>
Although I agree that women can be manly and badass, there are none that deserve that title from the ones that I've seen. Revy(Black Lagoon) comes close, but still not enough for a top 5 spot. Also, there is potential for lame entries even if we restrict the tournament to men only. I've seen some examples of that already - Itou Makoto (School Days) - who is as un-GAR as anyone can be.
In Nanoha's case she is very Gar and obviously moe at the same. She is one the few MoeGar characters out there. Just look at my sig and Avatar. Name another magical girl that kick as much ass as Nanoha and name another Shounan hero that has less Emo moments the Nanoha.
To me that is impossible - being cute and badass at the same time - they are like mutually exclusive. A badass character has to be intimidating and I cannot possibly be intimidated by a cute face. I don't know, maybe you've seen something that I missed and have some compelling reason to see Nanoha as a manly character. To me people who nominate her are either joking or have not seen many shows with truly manly characters. Also I can give you many examples of shounen heroes who have less emo moments than her (meaning they have none or close to none).
In the end, I have decided to participate, even though I still think the outcome is obvious:
5) Kamina (TTGL) - duh!
4) Kurogane (Tsubasa OVA) - few have attained his level of manliness
3) Zoro (One Piece Movie 8) - same as above
2) Viral (TTGL) - almost as good as #5, but not as many great moments
1) Wei (Darker than Black) - fought a battle that he knew he would lose - that's pretty manly for me

I thought so to until I saw for my very own eyes a Rie Kugimiya character. Trust me it's possible. However, I agree about the Nanoha thing being kind of iffy. I don't equate Nanoha with hot blooded at all, but somebody like Shana I do.

I can't decide if Seto or Gurren Laggen had more GAR. Seto is so moe and so gar at the same time, its epic. By far surpasses Nanoha as the show with the most moe and gar. I still have one computer to vote with yet. My vote will be
NaGARsumi
Kamina
San Seto
Luna/Lunar/Runa's Papa
Maki
Luna
I think Kamina, and NaGARsumi could be front runners for this tournament
5 - Medicine Seller [Mononoke]
4 - Lockon Stratos [Gundam 00]
3 - November 11 [Darker Than Black]
2 - Dutch [Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage]
1 - Rock [Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage]
I'm going to shed a few tears if the MS doesn't get in...

you mean "Albirio Imma" instead? because Camo is in the anime ?! incarnation as well ^^"
Whichever, I was just copypasting a likely name. Colonel Sanders. He really knows how to push Eva's buttons (plus he has a pet dragon). But I won't nominate him, and a manga-only character wouldn't do that well anyway.

Ohta "Coach" Koichiro - Hayate no Gotoku (Gunbuster)

Konata's dad (soujiro izumi)
Shiraishi Minoru lol

Last week of December.
I feel a bit outcast since none of my 5 picks seems to be talked about around here.
Hence forth, I shall take cover under my blanket while secretly cheering for Shiraishi.

Don't be.
I went out of my way to nominate not well known characters so they'll get some promotion in the actual tournament. Just because they're not known now doesn't mean they won't be later.
SaiGAAAR x3 yeah.
I feel like looking forward to this.
my nominations:

- Kratos (Tales of Symphonia)

I just finished watching the first six of Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya-kun, so I've got to ask...how is Shuungo gar?
He's got some fighting skills but is frequently unable to use them. He's not unintelligent by any means, but his relationship with girls portrays him as a dullard. And most of all, he hasn't done anything truly amazing yet. Basically...he's pretty mediocre. =_=

Agreed. As far as the comedy/romance anime male leads are concerned, I think Nagasumi is the only one deserving to be in SaiGar.

This looks to be an interesting tournament. Should be fun to see how this one turns out with a lot of good characters going to be in it. Pretty tough to narrow things down to 5 but managed somehow.
5: Yagami Kazuma Kaze no Stigma
- But seriously he has to be a major player here. Will do pretty much what he wants when he feels like it. Had a lot of tough things that happened to him when he couldn't do much in the past and turns up to start the series at unstoppable level. Strongest character in the series by far. Plus it's just fun watching him push Ayano's buttons.
4: Maebara Keiichi Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai
- Should be a solid pick for the tournament as well. Second season has shown him to be a major catylist for change. Can make things happen and can create support from plenty of people. Thus is able to rally others for a cause. Lot of good moments from two seasons to reflect on.
3: Michishio Nagasumi Seto no Hanayome
- Gotta help out NaGARsumi in this one. Developed well as a character through the series. Started off a bit weak and just trying to stay alive. But at the end showed what he was made of and actually did manage to survive the whole thing which is an accomplishment in itself.
2: Shiraishi Minoru Lucky Star
- Saimoe got me to check out this series when I wasn't sure at first. But Shiraishi did a good job getting me behind him and liking his parts of the show. Plus finally went and saw that part in episode 21 and damn that was pretty incredible stuff :).
1: Hiiragi Renji Night Wizard The Animation
- While not a series a ton of people are following he gets my vote on this one. Probably one of the few protangonists in an anime who's greatest aspiration is going to school :D. But all these troublesome enemies keep causing troubles causing him to miss out on class. But anyways a good guy who can be counted on to fight and fight well when the time calls for it. Protecting his friends fighting to the last and simply displaying enough qualities to get into the tournament.

I don't know.
Focus on anime-related tournaments wasn't as strong last year as this year, and SaiGar Guy had some trouble getting the first tournament on the ground. Our topic about it in AnimeSuki got locked last year, possibly because the tourney rules/objectives and dates weren't clearly defined.
This year, everything's outlined well and the tournament's success last year has warmed most people to the idea. This is also the first time we'll have having an AS topic about it, plus numerous ones in other forums; I wouldn't be surprised if we had a lot of promotion and discussion for it here and abroad.
It won't be on SaiMoe's scale, though, because "Gar" isn't as well known, but it will be notable to say the least. We were the biggest of the derivative tournaments until this year.

I decided the easiest way to do this was to go down my top anime list and pick one character from each series that was eligible. Thus, it came out as such:
5. Nagasumi (Seto no Hanayome)
4. Chiaki (Nodame Cantabile; most manly orchestra conductor ever)
3. Minoru (Lucky Star)
2. Otani (Lovely Complex; bonus points for being short yet still being manly)

We can tell this by the fact that the most nominated character outside of Simon and Kamina seems to be Shiraishi Minoru who on a scale of 1-10 in terms of Garness I would rate about a 1.3, with Simon from Gurren Lagann being about a 9.8.
Then again since it's still pretty slim pickings this year.....what the hell. I just don't see most of the characters people are nominating going anywhere so Lucky Star and some other fans are going to be really disappointed. More Gar characters next year please Japan. I think there's enough moe girls left over from this year to last us at least a decade.

Is there a limit of players who can participate?
There are 144 slots open, to go to the highest scorers of all nominated. Aside from the air date restriction, there are no limitations.
After my finals, I'll write up a list of all eligible males from the series composite listed on http://www.manlybadass.com.

That's actually somewhat of a good thing - it means that people haven't been exposed to too many Gar characters this season, and entering a not-well-known candidate into the tournament will get people to investigate "how Gar" he really is.
Of course, it could just blow up in our faces with people voting for who they know :heh:...but since SaiGar seems to overlap with rather tepid anime seasons (this upcoming winter doesn't look very appealing) it's a fine time for people to brush up on what they've missed.
Remember, the tournament isn't limited to fansubs, just anime that aired in the time bracket - characters like Dio Brando and Kenshiro can be nominated again because they were in movies that aired but have yet to be fansubbed. At the same time, cameos allow characters from other shows to enter as candidates from a particular show. Id est, Coach from Gunbuster can enter SaiGar 2008 as a candidate from Hayate no Gotoku.
Even then, I'd say that the low number of Gar characters is simply because people haven't dug deep enough...I've seen less than a tenth of the total series that were fansubbed in the time bracket, but from hearsay there appear to be a number of not well known competitors.
I only worry about over-representation from a few key series, like Seto and Gurren-Lagann.
Just to clarify, 2 cour shows that started fall 06 and finished winter 07 don't count as eligible for this?
The rules seem to imply that anything with at least one episode in the 1st December 2006 and 30th November 2007 is eligible, but I don't see SRWOG: Divine Wars on the list (or uh, Kanon 06, not that that should have any business in this). I have an objection, although too late.
Fall anime gets screwed by this rule. They are incomplete at the time of the nomination. GAR tends to appear later in the series. Some characters are completely off the charts until they do something really manly, like Akasaka we are discussing right now. Sakai Yuji comes to mind, since he will be GAR, but he isn't now, I doubt he'll get nominated.
I remember that Kazuki (Hotblooded kind of GAR) from Busou Renkin didn't enter. His best moments were of course on the second half of the series. Or Hiwatari "Blaze of Glory" gets excluded, as he appeared on the second half. Just some examples.
Most of this series I'm using as example ran during the selection period. But it's still excluded due to the premier date criteria. As a side comment, I think we're not overflowing with manly men in anime to afford to exclude this many.
We should have the selection period to cover the seasons completely. Fall 2006 to Summer 2007 would have been more appropriate I think.

Yuuji has already been nominated; in the case of anime that adaptions that extend beyond the anime's pace, they'll get included and will likely drag their feet for a while until their scenes of awesome kick in.
On the subject of Gar, and I think we'll have a lot more time to debate the mechanics of it during the tournament, I don't think a single act makes a character Gar. It's as much a lifestyle and personal philosophy as is a single action. Our original example, Archer, did "Gar" stuff all the time, whether it was slicing and melting Berserker or chanting Unlimited Blade Works. Simmilarly, Guts and Akagi were the same - even during "down-time" periods, like Akagi eating/drinking or Guts just lounging around, those guys still emitted a charismatic aura of manliness, like their mental states never changed from one of battle to relaxation.
I personally define Gar as the act of over-coming weakness - there are three types in this regard. The first, characters who start off with a flaw but rid themselves of it later in a show. This is the most common type of Gar (Yuuji, Shirou, Simon), and a few shounen protagonists grow up to be men of this calibur. Type II Gar would be a character with no weakness whatsoever, like Akagi and Master Asia. The final type would be characters who struggle with a weakness/flaw for their entire featured time, but in spite of this manage to do make impressive showings, and the struggle against the weakness itself is admirable. Kaiji is a recent example of this.
Given these trends, it would be apparent that just because a character doesn't show overt manliness at first doesn't mean he can't later - the majority of characters are Type I Gar anyway. So, for SaiGar, nominating characters with potential to see how they end up would be prudent; at worst, they don't do well in their rounds and people vote for then in the next tournament, if they are lucky enough to get involved.
Most of this series I'm using as example ran during the selection period. But it's still excluded due to the premier date criteria. As a side comment, I think we're not overflowing with manly men in anime to afford to exclude this many.
By your own argument, we don't know who is manly yet for currently run seasons, it wouldn't be fair to claim the characters in Ghost Hound (example) couldn't turn out to be Gar later in the series run, when the tournament is underway. At that, regarding your examples from before, I'd attribute that to people not taking the tournament seriously enough to nominate characters they thought could have gone quite far.
My general rule of thumb is, "Nominate characters you like, vote on Gar". The nomination process is the biggest hurdle, since every year there are a number of folks who don't believe in the tournament's legitimacy and don't participate at first, then complain later when their expectations go wrong. Same goes for nominating not-well-known characters.
My own list of characters consisted of several obscure ones - I intend to promote them during SaiGar because they're not well known, so people recognize their awesome and get into the series. This is how Akagi became a house-hold name at Yotsuba, and how "Harlock" evolved from a treasured memory in the experiences of several old anime fans to a well known archetype (though, "Garlock" helped him become even more known).
We should have the selection period to cover the seasons completely. Fall 2006 to Summer 2007 would have been more appropriate I think.
SaiGar 2007's end point was (- ∞) - November 2007, allowing for a great deal of nomination. In that period, we ended up with folks like Shinji, QUALITY Cabbage and such, who got in by virtue of recent popularity and a belief that the tournament would fail.
To correct for this, all I can advise is people promote the tournament and have them vote for obscure characters - 144 slots is a lot of shoes to fill, but we still have the numbers of men right now. We just need to give them time to grow - lend them a nod of approval and hope for the best.

I keep getting "duplicates found" error when I try to submit my one nominee, the Medicine Seller from Mononoke. All my other rows are blank. Is that a problem?
Edit: I looked for cookies to see if that's the problem, but the site doesn't seem to use those. I closed my browser (Firefox) which deletes everything that might have been saved. That didn't help either. I tried entering three candidates (adding Chiaki from Nodame Cantabile and Ryukki from Saiunkoku Monogatari); that also didn't make a difference. I'm still told I have duplicate entries. As an experienced PHP coder, it feels like the script to which I'm posting doesn't ignore blanks and treats them as dups.

Much like "moe," Gar was intended to describe the feelings a character elicited in the viewer. Like many 4chan (unforced) memes, Gar originated in a typo. After Archer's battle with Berserker, a number of Archer threads appeared on /a/. In one, Anonymous apparently intended to type, "I am gay for Archer," but instead typed, "I am gar for Archer." I believe I was actually on /a/ at the time, although I wasn't in the thread. I did see the almost immediate aftermath, however. Gar described a character who was so cool and masculine, he could inspire romantic and/or erotic feelings in the male viewer. The definition remained relatively constant until Kamina appeared. Gar was then expanded to include hot, masculine characters.
In much the same way moe isn't exactly a synonym for cute or kawaii (although it usually incorporates those traits), Gar isn't exactly a synonym for cool or hot blooded or even masculine/manly. It's entirely subjective in that what counts is your response to the character.

Posting a late response, I pretty much agree with Maids!x3 on the view on GAR. Although, I agree on the types of GAR, much like moe can be categorized.
Going by the manly definition Lelouch/Light (example) aren't GAR at all. They're pretty boys anyway. But the way I see it, they can be awesome for moments, so I'm GAR for them in a way.
Why do I think a single act can make you GAR? Because it triggers the "Awesome!" response on me. Akasaka's scene was awesome, so yeah, he's GAR to me.
Although my issue was more with the period. The way it is made, no character can enter twice. And Fall anime characters get affected since they don't enter the tournament at full potential. The eligible period criteria should be more like Saimoe. We don't have many spare GAR men anyway :p

Trying to compound a significant number of often complex traits in a character down to a singular explanation, and especially one that is just a slang term like Gar and Moe, is difficult in and of itself. Personally I never liked the idea of using one simple term with a modifier to describe many different ideas. It reminds me too much of Newspeak. Just switch out Doubleplus Good, Goodsex, Goodthink, Doublethink etc. for Tsundere Moe, Megane Moe, Moeblob, Gruff Gar etc. and it's essentially the same idea. Many of these characters that have these labels attached to them are more than just these made up words.
Though as long as it's just for the sake of fun and isn't taken too seriously then I don't mind participating in something like Saigar just once a year.
Though the way Saimoe 2007 seems to be dragging on and on and on into what I'm sure is going to end in a year round phenomenon in time for the 2008 affair is kind of worrisome.

Oh god, I'm loving this lineup, cept for a few hard decisions.
Group A's Biggies include 4chan's favorite Itou Kaji, Fist of the North Star's epic Kenshiro, I-want-to-win-but-probably-won't Yoko from TTGL, and... Boota. Definitely voting for Boota. :D
From Group B I can only recognize potential winners as Makoto from School Days (for shits), L from Death Note, Clare in Claymore, and Shirashi Minoru, November 11, & Lockon Stratos in the same first tier. That one will be a hard decision for all of us, won't it? Nanoha, we love you, but I'm not quite sure about this bracket.
As for Group C I recognize Keiichi/K1, Yuuichi from Kanon, Huang, and Masa-san in the left. On the right there's Allelujah (I'm guessing Hallelujah's here too) Haptism, Nagarsumi, and Akio Furukawa. Sacrifices must be made.
In Group D it'll be a bash between the Haruhi fans for Kyon, Hei, and maybe even Saito on the left. As for the right, I have no clue.
Group E has Kittan, Light, Lunar's dad (VOTE.), and 4chan will rush in for Giovanni. It's the English *chans vs. everyone else in this one, maybe.
I'm voting for Hayate, San-chan, Ninomiya, and maybe even the Dango themselves if they get past the first tier in Group F. Simon's probably getting through for sure.
Group G almost turned into Saimoe with Rika, Potemayo, and Konata. Age might nudge past the people who thought this was Saimoe, but then again I don't know many of the characters in this group.
Group H is a witch. Rena (for her murder mode), Kira, and Sunohara's name which might be a typo. Tch, the series just get less well known with each group.

That is to be expected though. Last year characters from any anime ever made ever could participate, which meant that there were plenty of serious contenders. This year only characters from anime released in 2007 were allowed. It's natural that there'll be a lot fewer characters available that could be considered gar. The contest should have had fewer starting characters to compensate for that change.
PS: One shouldn't forget that there were a number of joke entries last year as well though. Also quite a few people picked characters and will be voting in order to troll those that take Saigar seriously, so it's best not to attach much importance to this contest.

I too think that Rika deserves to be in there. Here's an example why:
Rika: If you want to kill me do it without putting me to sleep.
Villain: What is this about? You don't want a painless death? It's painful, you know... To be gutted alive.
Rika: It is so I don't forget. I will carve the fact that you will tear open my stomach unto my soul. So that when we meet again, I will remember that you are my adversary! Not only does she refuse to be anesthetized before she's disemboweled, she also proceeds to stare down the character who ripped her guts out until the moment she dies. I think that's pretty GAR.

Waay to many joke entries in this tournament, and a strange pick for females. I am shocked Balalaika and Revy of BL didn't make it in (heck, where's Rock and Dutch?) yet astounded that Nanoha, Konata, and Rika got in.
While the initial brackets do smell a bit, with the first round of slaughter the tournament should shape up so long as we don't get huge votes for the jokes.
And remember! Just because one doesn't know a character doesn't mean one shouldn't vote for someone, or abstain from voting at that. Topics like these exist so we can explain shows and debate why/why not certain people are Gar or not. Heck, I'm pretty eager for someone to explain why "Medicine Man" is a sell. Any Mononoke fans in the house?
Suffice to say, I won't be participating in this tournament as strongly as last year, but I'll still be very interested in what happens. :)
The Medicine Seller is just flawlessly badass, haha. He's the main character of the series, but because it's an anthology show, the focus is primarily on other characters... which means his main duty is to sit around and be awesome, make deadpan remarks, and occasionally deal out heavy-duty pwnage. Bonus points for having a decidedly sadistic streak.

Second Barrage finished it's run on 18 December 2006, which sadly places it just outside the qualifying period. For what it's worth, I'm fairly sure most of the BL characters would have made it if not for that - Revy certainly was in last year's "all-time" competition

Agreed, and remember some joke nominations may help take out others - anyone else think Nanoha would have a far easier match against some relatively unknown, low-ranking GAR character than she will against BRUCE IRONSTAUNCH? ;)

Don't diss the female characters. When you consider Shinji, Raki and Leeon is in. I think Teresa, Clare, Galatea, Nanoha, Balsa and San is more certainly more Gar then are and probably more Gar then 90% of the entries. Which quite sad when you consider it.

If any of the joke entries make it past their first round, I will be worried :uhoh:.
A statistic released on Yotsuba in the quite hours of the morning a while back claimed that there were 6000 entries for this year's SaiGar. For comparison, last year's final with Guts v. Master Asia only netted a bit more than 800.
Suffice to say, it remains to be seen how far the jokes go - if there's a number of folks who take the tournament seriously, as here, we shouldn't run into trouble. Last year there was a horrible bracket were "QUALITY Cabbage" (who I voted for, by the way) ended up the best candidate of the lot. I voted hoping he would sabotage Nanoha, but Guts beat the both of them quite soundly.
...
Anyway, according to the template, the first match starts 05 January 2007. If we're going by the same time as last year, the match will begin sometime around 1:00 PST for most people and will end at 12:00 PST, with an hour break before the next round of voting. In the first round, people will vote for BOTH brackets - as in, on the left hand side we'll be voting on Dio, Yoko, and Kenshiro, and on the right Charles di Britannia, Kazuki and Motsu.
Once we get through the first round of voting, which will take about a month, we'll have a two day break then go into the next round, then the block finals. Quarter final rankings are then generated at the start of March.

GAR is a 4chan meme; why on earth would you try to call it "sacred"?
If you'd read the manga, you might have a better idea why people nominated him... ;)

Not to mention being impaled in the chest by a large shard of stone, only to pull it out and grip it with one hand while suckerpunching his opponent with the other, to protect his students. I do believe he qualifies.
Not sure about his opponents. Giovanni has meme power for boxing with (and getting K.O.ed by?) a Chansey (but that's there, not here... right?), and never heard of Aurion Kratos.

Voted for Kenshiro and Emperor of Britannia as I said. Kenshiro because he's a huge buff martial artist who screams his way through most fights, can punch a person in half, and has his shirt explode off every episode, and Emperor of Britannia for being ridiculously tall and commanding, as well as having a booming voice.

I was rather disappointed that Kenshiro lost. I think he should be viewed as being more gar than Dio, since the latter always fought in a cowardly manner, trying to avoid endangering himself and used any dirty trick he could in his attempts to win.

Frankly, I shed no tears for Kenshiro - he went down in an exceptionally close match. That's all true Gar characters can hope for. I only wish someone saved the graph from earlier - the power's going out all across California from the torrential storms that keep hitting us, so I missed voting AND the results. Nothing appeared in the archive so I guess I missed out unless someone here will bring me up to speed.
Yoko getting more than two hundred votes is scary. Her making the three way match between Ken and Dio so close is likewise un-nerving; portents for a foul future if I do say so myself!
...
In any matter, like many, Hosaka and Kaiji get my votes. One doesn't need super-powers to be Gar - the Emperor of Britannia got his votes on the basis of his charismatic speech alone, Kaiji and Hosaka have their wits, brains, and dedication. Though those qualities don't always apply, heh.

I'm only going to start worrying if Minoru Shiraishi gets farther than a round or two. I don't see why some people are so dead set on seeing him win. Pretty much the only thing the guy did was tear down a set, which I'd hardly call manly. It was more like the guy had no self control. Characters like the Dango and Tomoya will hopefully go soon forbidding a 2ch intervention, as the dango is a puffball, and Tomoya is just your typical Keyani lead. Sarcasm/=Gar.
As for Yoko, I give support to her getting a respectable close third. She really earns it with her actions in the teaching episode, and her willingness to put herself in danger throughout the series (especially during that episode) for the sake of the innocent is the pinnacle of Gar Heroism to me. Though Kenshiro did the same thing constantly, and a much louder and more epic character who's legacy continues in OVA's today, so he got my nod. As for Emperor of Brittania, I really just gave it to him because he was the only real competition in that bracket, though I agree he shouldn't make it too far.

Well, I'm all but convinced to vote for Hosaka. A man who changes his image so he can become the perfect beau for the woman he loves? One doesn't get more manly than that; he's dedicated enough to undertake the pain but devoted enough to endure it. Those are qualities that are extremely admirable!

You've got to put a Japanese person's work into perspective; most of them allow themselves to be trampled on by co-workers and higher ups. Sebastian losing his cool just goes to show he's not like those other folks.
And "one-shot" characters who are famous for a single incident never have much staying power; second round tops for folks like that, especially when we can just list accomplishments of other characters off like shells from a machine gun in comparison.

My only complaint with Charlie is...he hasn't done anything. A single stump speech and that's it. If we're going by accomplishments, Coach (the OTHER Wakamoto character) should go much farther, but the Gurren-Lagann trolls seem to want to vote for the bacteria. D:
And my fear of Yoko isn't because she doesn't have a lot of manly traits, it's because the GL lobby is dangerous enough to back even minor characters like Beamspam or Ron; in matches where there's low salience, if the GL lobby remains powerful we could risk turning SaiGar into "SaiGL" which I don't think anyone wants. Assuredly, at least one GL character will make it to the quarter finals, but I doubt people want any more than one.

Um, who exactly is Hosaka? I can't really imagine a character from Minami-Ke being Gar compared to the butch warriors from Claymore. I'm starting to agree with Malintex here that the tournament may be headed for the popularity vote rather than Gar character vote. I don't think people are understanding the purpose of the tournament. I wish they would require you to leave a message why you think a character is Gar for a qualifier like Saimoe does for it's Moe votes. That way the tournament could have more of a degree of seriousness to it.
I really don't want this to turn into Saimoe Alternative here.:(

He's GAR because of his poetic way of existance. He's really madly in love, etc. I just watched Minami-ke Ep 8 for him, and was positively impressed. You don't need POWER and SWORDS to be GAR. Of course, he won't get past Dio anyway...
As for the Claymores, they are badass because they have all those powers anyway... And I really doubt people like Ichigo or Naruto should advance past round 1...
As for Kaiji, glad he got in. Personally I voted for Boota, but am more than satisfied with Kaiji. It's really time to weed out these joke characters ASAP though.
Dude, seriously :X
Boota at ep 1 != Boota Mole Pig/Shota.
Edit:
Was looking for this:
Hosaka is manly, which is the first prerequisite for being GAR. Theresa is too, but by default, she has to do this in spite of her gender. I'll spare you the details of the show you haven't seen and just say that his "gag" is just to be absurdly manly in a comedic and exaggerated way. No, he's not badass, and he isn't killing people, but that's not what GAR is about. Hosaka isn't a troll vote. Maybe he's a little more popular than he should be, but not a troll vote.
He's climbed a mountain in search of his love. He may look stupid and act in weird manners, but he's quixotic that way, hence QUIXOTIC GAR.
He doesn't have superpowers, but even a punk can't hit him with a punch, he strives for perfection for the woman he adores and is quite sincere.
Also, he climbed a mountain half-naked in winter wearing clogs and carrying ramen.
He may not be a killing machine, but he oozes manliness and GAR. QUIXOTIC GAR!
oh yeah, I also agree that women can be GAR, but powerlevels normally make GAR diluted. And Teresa is filled with powerlevels. I can't sense any "romance" in her the same way I can feel from Hosaka.
Men's romance, mind you, not romantic feelings.

This shows how personal Gar is.
You voted Boota cause you think he/it's Gar, I think it's one of the joke characters.
I decided from the start not to vote for critters or girls, even though the Claymore girls are more Gar than many male characters in this competition and that's a pity. I really hope the coming year will give us more anime with good, strong male leads.
I don't want it turn into a Saimoe Alternative either, I really hope in the end a Gar male character will win and not a girl with manly treats. If however the final will be a choice between Dango and a Claymore girl, than ofcourse I'll vote the latter :p

Could Makoto be the king of joke characters? That's some tough competition with characters like Dango (who could have foreseen that thing entering?), but Makoto definitely has the meme power. I'm stuck with pushing for L, then. I wonder how much Graha/m/ Acre will gather...

#1. It always was a popularity contest. forgot the hiss fest when Dio lost to Archer, Raoh lost to Gai or when Kenshiro lost to Akagi?
#2. It will soon degenerate into /a/ vs /m/, because while mecha anime chars are genuinely GAR, they may not impress the more conservative folks of /a/ who will be more impressed by a down to earth GAR like Guts', Kenshiro's or Raoh's. I remember going into a huge debate over some mecha fan in IRC to tell why Raoh is GAR, but he always resorted to the "but he doesn't fling galaxies or blow up space fleet" argument. Hence /m/'s GAR =/= /a/'s GAR.
#3. Hosaka doesn't need guns, swords, mechs, plothax to be GAR. If you can't grasp in which way he is GAR, it's your loss.
#4. As for your sarcastic =/ GAR, I remember it didn't stop Guts from being elected king of GAR. Call it a GAR trait, just like how some people needs their character to be a tsundere to be considered moé.

Due the power shortages I don't have the topic at hand, but there was an early morning discussion of Gar one or two days ago and a lot of light was shed on the definition.
At base, Gar constitutes two primary ideas; that of "manliness" and "charisma". One can see this in the original phrase; "Gay for Archer". Something people valued (manliness) in Archer was so concentrated, it literally caused a change in those people (charisma). Similar to to moe in some respects.
The "manliness" is the point of contention; what constitutes manliness? As one Anonymous said, some people consider overwhelming power and a god-complex as components of manly. For others, it's a loud voice and hot-blood. Sticking to ideals for certain people, casting them aside for others. For some, as in the Makoto example, we have...pimp skills.
Point is, while SaiGar is a popularity contest at its core, we have to consider that it's not just voting for who one likes, it's for who is closer to one's ideal of manliness. The "popularity" issue comes into play now - how many people agree with what one thinks?
...
Personally, I think hot-blood can only go so far. My idea of Gar revolves around ideals more than just personality and action, but personality is a big part of it. When watching GaoGaiGar, I didn't think Shishioh Guy was all that awesome, but I was really enchanted by Soldat J's resolve and his abilities.
...
As for Boota, him getting 350 votes is less scary than Yoko's two hundred something, but I don't consider him a joke character. The only jokes in this tournament are the "moe moe" girls and the in-animate objects, the former of which are more insulting if anything.

How are they more insulting when they are more Gar then half the male contestants in SaiGar?
What really is insulting is that there is such a dearth of Gar Males in anime these days.
Your ire should be directed instead of at the girls but at Gainax for giving birth to Shinji IKari. ZThe decline fo the Gar could be directly trace back to the raise of Shinji Ikari and cemented by Keitaro of Love Hina.

Really, if we're gonna start an Evangelion discussion now, I'd say it's more like if it wasn't for Shinji being so emo, we wouldn't really have a SaiGar right now, cause all male anime leads would be troubled boys who always manage to sort out their problems right on time for an "epic" end to the anime in which they wipe out all their enemies/win the girl/etc. :p
If you saw Gurren Lagann, I'm sure you noticed how well the Kamina/Simon duo worked together, so in my opinion what you said doesn't make much sense.

On the next battle I hope that Graham wins, since I know that there is no way in hell that L and this Matoko (even though I never watched School Day, I get the general idea of his character) is more gar then Graham Acre.
I'm gonna go for L and Alucard
@ Terrestrial Dream: very nice sig, Kratos rocks!

How are they more insulting when they are more Gar then half the male contestants in SaiGar?
After today's results, I sadly have to concede your point.
Frankly, I was totally surprised that the emo self-harm guy managed to win so decisively over Balsa (who I expected to get an easy win), and on the other hand we have Jojo fanboyism showing with an extremely weak character beating out Kusanagi Kenji and "The Skull Man". Now, I can understand "The Skull Man" not being Gar, but Kenji?
People, Kotetushin Jeeg is basically Gurren-Lagann minus FLCL plus Archer. It is an amazing show (like Baccano!, though I only know this by reputation) that got no attention last year in some sectors because GL was just so huge with people. :heh:
What really is insulting is that there is such a dearth of Gar Males in anime these days.
It's all subjective, really. But I have to agree since the 1980's over-mass characters there has been a real decrease in men with spines. I absolutely loath all the whiny Gundam bishies, and the indecisive, dense harem leads.
Things bode poorly; I hope Ninomiya Shungo doesn't win his round. :uhoh:
..
On the next round, I am voting for Graham Acre and Clare. Despite Alucard being a man, he's not Gar at all, he's a Mary Sue, and this tournament needs less over-powered stereotypes like that. So, to make up for not voting Claymore before, I guess I'll give Clare the benefit of the vote.
On the left, I don't cosider L very manly; he's a genius, but he doesn't strike me as the leader of men type. Itou Makoto is an infamous horror, leaving me no choice but to vote for the Gundam fellow.
I don't really support or look fondly on "I'm not going to vote this round." mentality, so I'll cast votes even for unknowns whenever possible.

For the left side, I'm choosing Graham Acre. Despite not watching Gundam 00, I know for a fact that Makoto and L aren't gar (though I like L as a character). A Gundam character is almost always gar in some sense so he gets my vote. For the right side I couldn't choose. Alucard being h4XX and his not even having to fight his opponents seriously =/= gar. I've never seen Claymore or El Cazador de la Bruja. I numbered them and put the choices in a number randomizer. Clare is getting my vote here looks like.

As a Gundam 00 fan, Graham Acre definitely deserves to win this one, because he's damn awesome. I randomized the other half to get Clare.
Sigh. I can only hope Lockon squeaks by tomorrow, because a Graham vs Lockon group finale would be awesome (and reflect recent things in the show as well >_>)
They both really deserve it, too. Nov11 is pretty badass, but... Lockon is LOCKON. Sniper McAwesome.

Yes, but he also can't pronounce his own name properly. Nobody has ever tried to call me Gray Ham unless they are trying to poke fun at me.

It's not Graham's fault the Elevens can't pronounce his name :(

Hey, don't ignore the fact that L was able to "fight" with Light on equal grounds, despite not having any supernatural help like Light (or Near later in the series).
I find that sort of equivalent on how Graham is able to fight Gundams despite only having a modified Flag.
Tomorrow I'll have a hard time choosing between 11/11 and Lo(li)ckon Stratos...
