As mentioned in this post (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=1280354&postcount=2058), Utawarerumono will be getting a 3 episodes OVA adaptation.

Moved the message to a new thread.
I'm very much looking forward to this. I assume that they're going to use these episodes to explore more of the fun/comedic side of the Utawarerumono world that got cut from the anime due to time constraints.
I guess the timing isn't too surprising with the Blu-Ray set of the series being released in Japan at the end of January. And Tears to Tiara arriving on PS3 and in anime form in the not-too-distant future.
Anyway, good stuff. :)

Wouldn't a three eps OVA have even more time constraints than a 26 eps series?

Wouldn't a three eps OVA have even more time constraints than a 26 eps series?Oh sure -- but what I meant was that I suspect these will be "omake episodes". They're going to fill in gaps left from the original anime as opposed to creating a new story. So in that sense, it's more like making the original series "26 episodes + 3".

Sweet. I was really hoping they would have an OVA series. This makes me very happy indeed. :D
Any idea on the release date? I can't find any info on it in those posted links.

Any idea on the release date? I can't find any info on it in those posted links.I'd say that it's probably a ways off yet. From the sounds of the announcement, production's already underway for the first episode, but hasn't started for the second yet (they haven't decide what it'll be about yet?). So I'd guess the first episode would be at least 6 months off at this point? Obviously that's pure speculation -- who knows...

Well, I can wait. The longer it takes, mostly likely the better quality it would be. Besides, they have to write the story anyway, since the anime and the game ended in the same place, and so no more of the story exists. Either way, I am greatly looking forward to it.

Sorry if this has been mentioned in the licensed thread, but will anime suki consider the OVAs licensed?Well, unless there's a comment from ADV Films or they're listed in the credits, I don't see why they necessarily would. There's no guarantee that ADV will license it, though it's certainly probable. (If nothing else, Imagica and all probably want the English dub/sub for the inevitable Blu-Ray release, as they're doing with the series.)
wait since when was this announced? O_O

It was announced a little over a week ago at an Aquaplus event in Japan. So it hasn't been long.
Wonder if they will finally end the enitre Dori/Gura argument by animating that one scene from the game.

Nope. For those that didn't play the game, Dorii and Gura will forever remain ANDROGENOUS! Bwa ha ha ha ha ha ha haaaaaaaaa.
i hope this ova is a side story of Karura's and Touka's adventure. XD

o.O ecchi scene ??
No, I mean the scene in which they clearly state they are boys and even offer to undress to prove it.
Then again, there will always be madmen who will claim they were 'just kidding'
Yes, I've actually seen people claim that.
Wait, are the OVA's the DVD Specials?
Or are they different?

Now would be a good enough chance then any for it to happen. I defiantly have my fingers crossed that it will.

New material, not the DVD specials --- though you could have found that out just from reading the first few posts of this thread.

According to the Japanese Wikepidia article (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%81%86%E3%81%9F%E3%82%8F%E3%82%8C%E3%82%8B%E3%8 2%82%E3%81%AE#OVA) on Utawareru Mono, the OVA series will cover the missing subplot regarding Urutori (ウルトリィ) and the baby Fumirwil (フミルィル) from the game.
That said,
MORE UTAWARERU MONO! HURRAY!
I can't wait to see more of my darling Kamyu.
Damn! Good news! I really hoped this to happen. ^^ Thought I would want to see continuing story for the ending, but that's not gonna happen I think. Well, atleast the game's translation patch for PC is complete soon for us non-japanese read able people too. <3
im hoping that one of the ova will conclude more of the end and have hakuoro return.

YAY! I'm very happy now. :D
They need to create OVA, that contain all the hentai stuff that was left out of the anime series :P
Hakuoro has responsibilities as the last remaining human!!!!
--
I wonder though if humanity was wiped out as a whole in that world. If there could be one pocket of humans, then there could be others... unfortunately that story direction is likely to lead to Hakuoro and lot trying to survive against Evil humans.
i just wanna see more touka and karura. XD

Eh, up till where I am now (having just finished resquing Karura's brother, and being 'visited' by kamyu) the hentai in the game was pretty lame in my opinion. It just looked like it was thrown in there for sales, barring Karura's scene, which actually looked somewhat in place with the story.
I myself am hoping for a bit more Touka and Dori&Gura love. It seems to be a curse I have that the characters that are my favourites get the least amount of screentime. T_T
well the DVD specials did at least include the story about Touka's doll (and also gave her the casual outfit that you see in the game's fishing scene)
I doubt there's going to be much more with Dorii and Guraa, considering they didn't really play much of a role in the game (really, you already get a lot more of them in the anime simply because you can see everyone present in each scene, instead of just the characters involved in the main dialogue). And the scenes they were involved in (and doing more than just "Reporting in!"), and not already in the anime, are unlikely to be animated.
Yeah, you're right. Most likely the main focuss will be the baby debacle. I only recently started hunting down the DVD specials. Special 4 is troublesome to find, though. Annoying, concidering that one is the finish to the doll scene.
Do the American releases have these specials as well?
I've got specials 1, 2, and 4, although 2 is only a raw... 3 I only have like 8% and never been able to find a seed... so I didn't get the start of the doll scene
And yeah, the story about the baby seems to be the largest piece of game story left out of the anime, so that would be pretty likely.
i have all the dvds and yes it does have all the specials as extras.
Spectacular_Insanity
2008-02-17, 19:37
I didn't realize there was a fourth special. I have specials 1-3 downloaded on my computer. The doll scene was hilarious. DO NOT make Touka mad, or you will regret it.... well, if you live, that is. :heh:
Pain to find indeed, only an italian sub for 4 so far. It's the conclusion to the doll scene.
At any rate, if the American releases have the extras, I should buy them, although that would mean killing my wallet and go for an import...
And yeah, the story about the baby seems to be the largest piece of game story left out of the anime, so that would be pretty likely.
Well, its not as if they can't make up new material if they want to.
Soljashy

It's quite possible that the sub-story with the baby is covered in only one of the episodes. If that is the case, I wonder what they would do in the remaining two. There is that extra arc in the PS2 game (which pretty much involves an encounter between Kurou and the former princess of Kenashikourupe) but I somehow doubt they would take new material from the remake of the game.
Part of me is hoping to see more of poor Mutsumi's extremely neglected scenes in the flashback, but as long as there is Kamyu in the OVA I can rest in peace.
I expect nearly every one from the main cast (big cast, too) will be in the OVAs.
So there are 3 OVAs coming?
Supposedly three are coming out eventually...no set date from what I've read...though I haven't heard anything more than speculation about their content, canon or original. I had vague hopes for a sequel even since the ending was...so open ended. Though I'd rather nothing if it isn't as good as the original...

You'd really want a poorly done extension? :p I tend to get annoyed when it doesn't live up to my expectations because it feels like a blatant money grab...rather than something that has...vision, something that is entertaining. If they are going to extend it, they should do it right and take whatever time they need. Also, one can only ever safely speak for oneself.

Ahem... Your words were:
Though I'd rather nothing if it isn't as good as the original...
Because the original series was so exceptionally good in my opinion, I simply doubt whether with the OVA they could realistically reach the same standard (of course I would love it if they somehow did). Even if it doesn't completely live up to the original series, I still think it's better than nothing, though. I never said I wanted something that's poorly done, however. Of course I agree that they should take all the time they need and do it properly. ;)
Also, one can only ever safely speak for oneself.
Indeed one can. But I think you know what I meant.

After watching the series, I was just amazed. At first, I thought the time period was like more primitive settings without technology, but it made me think when there was a scene of Hakuoro's past being experimented by the scientists. Throughout the series, it was very good with following up on the truth about Hakuoro and his true identity. Overall, I thought it was very original and great. I gotta remember to check out the OVA series some time. :heh:

i am realy looking forward to the three ova's and it sucks having to wait for them,
personally i would rather they focused on things such as the baby instead of trying to extend the story. it is fine having hakuro sealed away and we have seen what has happened to all the characters in light of that event so the ending should be left untouched!

Yeah... Interesting surprise huh? Not complaining.
Good to see the OVAs still have existence. Haven't heard them mentioned in a while.
Likewise, I've been awaiting these ovas patiently. They can take all the time they want, as long as they are done well. Sometimes I still dream of a continuation of the series, but I know it would just detract from the ending.
Regardless happy to see they are still underway!

I'm glad to finally hear more about the OVA, however I am somewhat disturbed by the news of it "returning to its eroge roots" – especially as I am one that believes the story is so much better without its ecchi aspects. Please don't stuff this one up, Leaf/Aquaplus! :uhoh:
EDIT: I had a look at the source, and it doesn't sound half as bad as I had imagined when I first heard "ero". The only thing mentioned on that note is (quite literally) that because the OVA is aimed at adults, they won't be avoiding nudity (I presume) using things like steam or manipulation of the angle. Here are some other things mentioned:
- Kamyu's height has been increased. (Yay for Kamyu!)
- The first episode starts out with the Fumirwil arc (the baby Uruto adopts) but has been revised to include more scenes for Karura.

Thanks for posting the preview! I love what I'm seeing so far. I could do with a little less Karura, but I guess she has a lot of fans – as long as they don't neglect the other characters (especially Kamyu) I won't complain. What we've seen of Karura and Urutori's fight so far looks every bit as cool as I had been hoping.
:hyper-^v^:
I'm even more excited now...!
Heh. I want more Touka myself. This PV had enough for me (that look of her in the bath was cute).
Character designs look just fine. Though Kurou doesn't have that cool sharp look anymore, but Benawi still has his clear bishounen eyes.
Urotorii looks abit different (thank god they didn't include the lips she has in the game though), bu still nice....but the consistency is what I'm worried about (cause her faces looked abit too different when she was holding the baby).
So looks like I'm excited too.
Karura offering Aruru a drink = SOLD
The fanservice is a nice bonus too :heh:

I hope that after these OVAs are produced Eruru finally gets a decent figure produced. I've not seen a good one for her yet.
Though I did purchase 1 rather poor Horo, another poor but not as poor Horo, and one really good one. Perhaps if Eruru had some selection I'd feel I needed the whole set regardless of quality, like I do with Horo.

Thought it was too obvious to be true. Well, technically, they literally aren't. Uruto said that she doesn't have milk and is only doing that with the baby because it seems to soothe him. :D
Anyway, I also noticed the absence of Eruruw. Though I do think it's odd that they'd omit footage of such an important character, I don't believe it's anything to be worried about. It's a very reserved preview, and even the protagonist Hakuoro himself only got about one shot.

Whoa whoa whoa, what is this that I wake up from my nap to find? What a nice surprise to wake up and find a new OVA for one of my favorite series. Was honestly a bit disappointed though, was hoping for something after where the TV series ended not mainly focusing on Karura and fan service. However, it was awesome to see Aruruu's unrivaled cuteness again and the music seemed to fit just right, it said this is Utawarerumono but an OVA! Well 2 more OVAs to look forward too, hoping for some good stuff to come in the future!
No disappointments here. Lots of Karura with some Aruru cuteness and Touka being Touka made the OVA enjoyable for me. And surprisingly, they made Oboro look like a badass instead of the idiot that he was in the original series.
Now I wish they had made more Utaware instead of TTT, since I find Hakuoro's group far more entertaining than Arawn's.

She doesn't act like a drunken buffoon every episode, in fact she hasn't been like that for a few episodes now. Also i don't see how a character acting drunk for about 30 seconds during an episode has anything to do with the overall show being bad.

The entire audio track, including the OP/ED, the voice tracks and especially the BGM made the episode for me. Kudos to the producers for being able to secure the anime soundtrack for this, I expected only the game music to be used. We have a Musouka clone for the OP, but it's still worth a listen.

The OVA wasn't bad... I guess. The main thing that brought the story down was a lack of a convincing reason for her hysteria... OK, so she really wants to keep the baby... Why...? I expected them to explain some past in the OVA, but it never did...
The new art style was cute and nice though... It feels really different from the TV series, but it was similar to ToHeart2 OVA's, so it didn't take long to get used to.
The most memorable thing was the fanservice part at the beginning... As expected of OVAs, fearsome...

B.) Is it? The ANN entry lists that Oriental Light and Magic is one of the producers, and they worked on the original Utaware.Well, technically, Tears to Tiara is produced by White Fox, which is a new studio that was formed by the OLM team that did work on Utawarerumono. So, it's a different studio by name, but not a totally different studio in terms of personnel or anything. And yeah, the studio for this OVA is Chaos Project, who did the TH2 OVAs, as s_b mentioned.
Soljashy
2009-06-25, 01:26
Chaos Project also did the opening for the PS2 version of the game, I believe, the animation of which I liked a lot, so I knew what to expect and I wasn't disappointed.
Overall, I think the OVA was OK. The character artwork is very pretty, the backgrounds are beautiful and the characters are true to themselves. The story is true to that of the original game, with some alterations of course, but that is to be expected of an adaption (we'd all rather have new material, anyway). I enjoyed watching my poor Kamyu fail at taking care of the baby.
Now for my criticisms. First of all, too much Karura. I understand that they basically made her the protagonist for this episode, and I guess I can overlook this as long as they don't keep it up, but I would have liked to see more of the other characters. Especially characters like Oboro, Benawi and Hakuoro (and even Eruruw) got very little screentime. Yes, we all have our favourites, but when I watch Utawareru Mono, I want to see the whole family.
Other concerns of mine have to do with the pacing and lack of dialogue. As someone who played the game, I know there is a lot of source material for this story. They had over twenty minutes to do a single story arc, and yet they spend so much time on Karura sitting drinking sake and gazing at the scenery. Even in the part where Uruto had to give the baby back, they only played Eruruw's song and there was no dialogue. Maybe my judgment was clouded by the expectations I've built up over the past year – if I had orchestrated this OVA, I would have mixed in elements from other skipped arcs, or at least include Karura's parable about that farm animal.
Also, I was annoyed by the blatant fanservice, which was fortunately limited to one scene.
Nevertheless, this episode, though perhaps weak compared to the best moments of the series itself, has many highlights, and it comes with a lovely opening sequence with the kind of music we've come to expect of Suara. Of course, they get bonus points for including Mutsumi in the opener. It was weird hearing so many of the game BGM tracks used in the OVA, but they fit so well that it wasn't at all distracting.
I'm looking forward to the other two episodes. Here's hoping they include Kamyu's dark side in future volumes, and hopefully reveal some of Mutsumi's past (which hardly got any exposure whatsoever in the series itself). Yes, these black-winged beauties are my brides.
The fanservice was pretty overwhelming in the beginning, I have to admit. I'll also echo, I would have rather seen more about each character, but with such a short format, I can understand how that would be a nearly impossible task. That being said, I was overall pretty pleased.
The music was very fitting to the series and I noticed the BGMs were right out of the game, so they were really fitting. I was pretty impressed with the opening sequence. The animation took a bit of getting use to, however it really grew on me quickly and I find I rather like it--Touka's sword scenes in the opening seem very natural and graceful.
There wasn't alot of humor in it, however what little they attempted was pretty well good, even if it wasn't anything new. Aruru was incredibly cute and stole most of the scenes she was in, especially the late night storehouse scene. It was probably my favorite from the ova.
Of course, this leaves me dying for more material. They can take as long as they want, as long as its good. I'd have much rather seen more of this rather than Tears to Tiara, which I've found decidely medicore at best.

Lol@people expecting more than fanservice. The story has been told already, you really can't add to that.
What I liked the most was that they used the game music. Also Aruruu moe~
Animation was a little weird, it felt off when Hakuoro want to see Karura and went Touka and Eruruu called Kamyu. Still, better than the series, no primitive CG soldiers ftw.

Actually, there were a lot of little story arcs like these that were left out from the original game. Yes, I do feel that they could have concentrated more on that and cut out some of the fanservice. But there's a good chance they'll cover more of that in future volumes. I'll remain hopeful.

They did quite some adjustments on the characters' proportions. Hakuoro looks a bit more like he did in the game, and Kamyu seems to have been shortened to be closer to Aruruw's length, which makes sense since they're only a year or two apart in age (at least according to Hakuoro's speculations). I found it a pleasant change. I kind of missed the CG soldiers, though. ;)

Good first episode of the OVA. Everyone complains about it being all fanservice, but it's not. The first episode is almost straight out of the game. The nudity was unexpected, but not unwelcome. XD
But seriously, if you couldn't figure out why Urutorii was upset, you're a moron. Anyone with half a brain cell would have been able to tell she was getting way too attached to a child that wasn't hers. Karura's role was, quite obviously, meant to steer Uruto away from getting too attached, but obviously it didn't work.
Best part of the OVA, however, is the original music from the game. In my opinion, anyway. That by far I enjoyed the most. The new opening and ending are quite lovely, as well.

I seriously hate stuff like this, i loved original Utwarerumono but this...
I can't even understand why people try to defend the whole 'kidnapping' thing
So she's a nany for a bit then without even hearing about they're coming to get the kid she runs off yelling 'uuh im this kids momiii!' .. I can MAYBE buy that alittle bit but everyone and their mothers show up and angel girl goes Super Saiyin tries killing everyone and then when she stops everyone goes 'Tihi you're so silly welcome home :)'
That's very unreasonable and.. c r a p.

That bothered me too. Unlike the game, the OVA implies that Uruto is unaware of the parents coming to collect their child, which makes her running away with the baby seem rather silly.

To be fair, she wasn't trying to kill any of them. The On Riyaaku spell she cast on them is a sealing spell (which should be familiar to someone who is a fan of the series itself). I do think that this scene was handled better in the game, though.
Overall, a lot of scenes that made Uruto's desperation seem more natural were left out in this OVA. One scene in particular had her promising Karura that she would give back the baby when the time comes, but when Karura calls her bluff, asking Uruto to let her take care of Fumi from now on, Uruto is unable to comply. This and other scenes form a steady build-up that ultimately makes her running away with the baby a lot more believable. This is the main reason I'm so annoyed with them wasting screen time on Karura drinking sake.

Well whatever happend in the game sounds better tho that doesn't help the OVA.
I really loved Utaware... everything from the characters how they went together the fighting their cuteness and the bonds etc... This was just a disgrace :(
'boobs boobs boobs' 'crazy angel girl kidnaps a baby and attacks EVERYONE and then everyone forgives her and gives the baby to the family'
No plot and basicly nothing thoughtout through the whole episode...
Anyone who says this is good is the same people who think the naruto fillers are awesome and that they're better than the real thing..
I got so happy when i saw Utaware OVA this morning too :( I even SMILED! :(
It's a 30min show. They can't have everything in. =] I very much liked how they kept the crisis/conflict part of the show concise, and created a tranquil feel overall.
There's a bonus disc that comes with the DVD; a 13min picture drama that portrays part of that build-up.
Urutorii is caring for the child at night. Hakuoro comes in and tells her to take a rest and have Eruruu take care of the kid once a while. Urutorii mistakes this as a hint that he wants the baby out of the way so they can do "it". A humorous scene ensues, and afterward, they sit down and chat for a while.
Urutorii reminisces old times, and tells Hakuoro the story of when she first met Karura as a child. She started off by asking Karura to be her friend, but it turned into an argument after a while. The show ends with scenes of them fighting, accompanied by the ending theme song of the OVA. The last CG however, was of the two of them, who seemed to have made up already, and having fun together.

I need to get my hands on that picture drama. :upset:
Well it was nostalgic. Utawarerumono was one of the first shows I watched when I really started to get into anime (in 2006).
Yeah not enough focus on the other characters. But since I feel the series' main problem is that it hardly gives itself enough character development. this wasn't too bad.
Why did Oboro wear his night outift.....in the morning?
It was weird hearing so many of the game BGM tracks used in the OVA, but they fit so well that it wasn't at all distracting.
Noticed this aswell. The battle theme fit surprisingly well.
Woot. Found the Chinese subs for the bonus disc. I'll get to it after finishing the sub for T3 this week.

And of all its scenes, you just had to watch the onsen scene. One scene with exposed nipples does not a Queen's Blade make.

The song is called Unmei -SADAME- (運命-SADAME-) and is sung by Ryouka Yuzuki (the voice actress of Eruruw). It's included on the Utawareru Mono PS2 OST (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-8l-77-t-49-en-15-utawarerumono-70-1mc4.html) which I bought for this very reason.
Also, it was kind of funny how everyone was humming this throughout the OVA.
saw eps 1, i must say this is not for those who have not seen the series (like me), no intro to the world settings or story
most of the time, the story moves very slow
the good part is the OP and ED, both sound like retro music and very catchy

Finally I got around to seeing this, and in very good quality to boot. I was able to appreciate the art and animation more as I got to see it very clearly. It took a little getting used to seeing the slight changes in the art but I personally think it looks a little better than the original show. The little things left out from the game didn’t make it any less enjoyable; although I was highly anticipating this I knew it wasn’t going to be absolutely perfect. But overall I found it very enjoyable, I loved how they kept the original music and even the onsen scene was good. I was shocked at how far they went considering how tame the original anime was. My only real complaint was that there wasn’t enough Touka, but I look forward to seeing more of her in the later volumes so I’ll wait patently. And this bonus disk sounds like it’ll be worth checking out hopefully I’ll get around to seeing that too.
Well, they could have wrapped up the whole Urutori baby story within 15 min. The ep felt really slow due to that. At least it was still enjoyable to some degree. I absolutely love the OP/ED songs. I never been so addicted to anime music since.. the original Utawarerumono OP.

Any idea when the next episode hits as of yet? Loved the first episode but wished it was much longer 40 mins felt short for a return. Otherwise cute art style, fantastic fan serves, and breathtaking opening.

Also, it says spring 2010 for episode three. Anyone here know when it's spring in Japan? :D
It says 12/23 for chapter 2 AND 3. Not sure if it's a typo. It's been up for a while and they haven't changed it, though on the radio they only mentioned chapter 2.

I'm pretty sure that's a mistake of some kind. The third volume has got its own table on that page giving prices and codes for the DVD, Blu-ray, etc.
