What does everyone think about the star trek online game being made? Personally I think most of the science fiction online games have done very well but I think Star Trek could have alot going for it in terms of quests...ie away teams and space battles...has a lot of potential, but I have a feeling it may fall flat
Star Trek online? Can you fill me in?
Shouldn't this thread be in the Games subforum??? If I remember the early reports, its Yet Another MMO but in the ST universe ... not sure what period though. I really didn't think it would ever see the light of day.

Anime has ruined my taste for gaming. Probably because I am old and have lost the fast twich.
<sigh> Can't even play that ole "Heart of the Sunrise" riff anymore on the ole Les Paul.

it's a mmo game in the star trek universe. I'm not sure what the link is for their info page, but I think you can google it.

I went ahead and found the link to the official site. It's still in the early stages, but what they do have looks visually appealing (definately past what my computer can handle at the moment)
Simple gist, it takes place roughly a quarter of a century after the events of Star Trek Nemesis, so that places it in the early 25th Century - most likely to allow some leeway for technological, political, and scientific development. I definately find the art fanciful, and the potential to go from cadet to graduate to commander of your own shuttlecraft to an officer onboard a capital ship thrilling. The developers say something about mixing space and ground battles together, and even some joint missions with multiple vessels. I have absolutely no idea how they're going to pull off such a complex array of multiplayer cooperation. But if they can get it down, I'm all for it.
Unfortunately, my last MMO, Final Fantasy XI, nearly ruined my college grades. I don't lie when I say MMO is addictive. If anything, it's best to stay away from it. If STO doesn't require all the camping, looting, and the bajillion hours to synth the ultimate gear or weapon, then I might give it a try. The inherent idea that only people who devote rediculous hours and sometimes sell their morality to be the best in a game deserve the best items is a major flaw in MMORPGs in my opinion. And I tried really really hard in FFXI, too, and I wasn't nearly half as good as some of the others. So I went, "F it."

It does seem very complex and sounds interesting. Truthfully Star Trek has alot that you can work as an MMO game, but many sci-fi mmo games just don't do as well as the fantasy. So far Star Wars has done the best, but even then they had some problems and even then they still have alot of fantasy mixed in that I think it actually helped the franchise. I'm interested to see how it will turn out. I'm not sure if I'm going to play it. I'm sure someone will put something on you tube though when it comes out :D

I don't think its possible for anyone to make a Star Trek MMO that would provide an expansive/varied enough game universe with compelling and worthwhile gameplay to ever satisfy me.
hehe, I dunno..I would play it, but with World of Warcraft, Star Wars Galaxies (I still play for some reason...I miss CU...very sadening...) and Guild Wars...I wouldn't have tome to play...let alone pay for it. I know some guild members on SWG are going over to Star Trek for a while when it comes out though. I might stop SWG for a bit to play it as well. I mean, SWG is not as good as it was so I really see no point in playing it. CU has not been for like 3 years and it's now crappy NGE so I'm going to try it. I feel it wont be the best but it opens a whole new door for Trekys :D

You know, I've always wondered how you'd track days, months and years in science fantasy. One day, month or year on Earth is obviously not going to be the same as one day, month or year on some planet that orbits Alpha Centauri, or any other planet in the Universe for that matter.
And let's not forget all the messy time compression that occurs each time the Captain says, "Warp speed."
The simple way science fiction does it is take a popular or massive organization (dominated largely by Humans, of course) and base their own relative sense of time as the galactic standard. Star Wars did it. Everybody had set their clocks on Republic time (according to Wookieepedia (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page), English is considered the Galactic Basic Standard). And everyone did it for Star Trek too. All hail Earth, for Humans >

lol, Well, on alot of Sci-Fi things English was the Galactic standerd. Now..we can't technically say for Star Trek, from my memory the never really said, we only know that most of them soke english, or they had those translator devices whcih allows them to hear what they are saying in english. Now, Star Wars, oh yea, common language was English human language. Then, either everyone, The Wookie, Zabraks, etc.., Most might not speak the common lang, but can understand it. You wont normally find someone who doesn't unless your back in KOTOR time and the guy is acualy a robot..(hint hint, except this robot new the Selkath lang..:D)..But getting off subject. I can't wait for this to come out

well the game is coming close to release. I'm going to get it and maybe add a review of what I think the game will be like. It's release date is in February and I'm excited, although I'll have to cancel my EQ account lol
Yes, I'm going to give this a go as well. While I'm a pure-blooded Star Wars fan I do like Star Trek as well, and seeing how this game will give me the chance to fly around in space -which so far only one other MMO has done- I'm anxious to see it.

Open Beta started yesterday I'll try it out today and talk about it alittle. Keep in mind it's still in beta so I should expect some bugs, but it should at least give a glimpse of what the game can become.
So far it's refreshing. I'll admit I'm not much of a fan of the ground combat (main reason I'm playing this game is for the space combat) and the ground controls feel a bit clunky. Phasers being phasers, it's not exactly fast either.
Space combat, on the other hand, I love. Still need to get my first cruiser, but even in my starter escort space battles are a blast. Trying broadside the enemy to keep them in the sight of both phaser banks while leaving enough leeway to quickly turn to face them and deliver a deadly payload of torpedoes once their shields go down.
For now, it looks like I have a game to keep me busy.

I know what you mean I thought it was pretty good. I'm surprised how stable it was for an open beta compared to other games like Final Fantasy. I thought it was cool with some of the referances in the game. Such as on NPC talking to another NPC about Wolf 359. The character creator I think is still unfinished. Overall for a beta I'm impressed. This game has alot of potential. It's clearly not finished of course but it seems to going toward the right direction.
Well beta has ended and I'm excited to get the game started. As for what beta was like, well it was pretty much like other beta I've played. It had issues with server crashes and such, but as the beta came to a close the game became more and more stable. Some people have tried to compare the game with EVE online, but I think that's a mistake. I feel they're two games and although they have space combat really attempt to garner the attention of a different demographic of players. Another game people will definitely make comparisons with is Star Wars the Old Republic, which is another game I'll be playing to see how it compares, but in reality I always felt that Star Trek had more of a Pseudoscience appeal to it, while Star Wars had more of a fantasy aspect to it that I feel would be unfair to compare either product. So far I've really enjoyed the game.
Is there some things I would like to change? Yes, I do feel some of the ship scaling was off, but I must say that it may not be a good idea to change the scaling, because now I realize once you get to larger ships scaling them up to size would actually make it harder do see and target so out of practicality I think they made a good choice in the scaling. One thing I think they should consider (and I get this idea from Smash Bros) is to maybe get trophies of different ships which you can use as a desktop wall paper. Also I felt that a few keys could be switched around. Ground combat also isn't too much different from other MMO's. I still think they could tweek it up a little.
Well, the game is out and I'm enjoying it tremendously. It probably won't keep me captivated for several years, but it will at least keep me busy until TOR hits. And with only one server, anyone can play with anyone,
See you online, captains.

Isn't this more like GW than an MMO? From what I hear, everything you do with other people is instanced.
It is instanced, but not like GW. This games works with a huge 'galactic world map' on which you see every player fly in their ships, with systems, asteroid fields and nebula being where the missions and their instances are. But these instances are open, meaning that you still have the 'player comes along and helps' scenario. I've certainly saved -and been saved- a fair share of times in this way. Joining a friend in the middle of a mission is as easy as flying to the system he is in and pressing 'resume mission'.
Stations, like the world map, are still fully open.
Still a bit buggy from what I've seen. Some quests won't give you credit for finishing them.
I'll probably pick this up in the future, but not in the first month. Let them work out a few of the bugs first, and get that first wave of people that will try it free for a month out first.
(Than its off to save the Federation...one system at a time)
Yeah, it is suffering from the usual MMO launch bugs, though it it's more the occasional bug you wander into. If a few bugs annoy you, waiting a month before picking it up is a good idea.
I don't have that patience though, and I can handle a few minor bugs. One point I wish they'll give some attention ASAP is the incredibly stupid AI and pathfinding of the ground battles. That's just pathetic.
I should be an utter fanboi for this MMO... but I just can't self-gen any interest for it. I blame the steady erosion of the franchise by the B&B twits for my attitude. :)

I'm enjoying the game so far : ) I upgraded my video card on my laptop to the geforce 8700m, but I can't find a heatsink and fan...it doesn't over heat or anything, but I would still like to get one Better safe than sorry : P
Recently bought a cruiser for a change of pace, and I've decided to be different and stuff my cruiser full of turrets.
That's right, turrets. :3
Works pretty well too. And with a few different type of turrets, it makes for a spectacular disco display as well.
An interesting game. I played for five days on a trial key, made it to Lt. Commander and got myself a Science Vessel. The instancing is interesting actually. I've run into places and find someone already doing a quest or doing one of the Random Deep Space Encounters. Its actually fun that you don't have to group with someone...the game auto groups you. And in the Deep Space Encounters you don't even need to be grouped..just the required number of enemy groups need to be destroyed. And they can range in difficulty by a lot in one of those. I was in one were I was killing -9 groups with some people still with their starting Light Cruiser to some groups at my level to some that were 6 over my level to running the hell away from the ones 30 above my level. It was mostly random, but usually meant there was someone in the area that was a higher level (like a Rear Admiral) that had been in the zone or was in the zone (they could have been in the zone and then changed instances...or just left).
Groups missions vary in type from rescue missions, investigations, simple repair jobs, to exploration of a planets surface. Not all missions are shoot 'em ups. I've had several where I didn't even need my phaser or even open fire on any enemy ships. Or in one case my job was to scan somethings that were guarded by enemy units that were a little above me....so I put all power into the engines and did high speed flybys in field of rocks. Didn't fire a shot myself...got fired at a lot.
I will say I like having one turret on my ship. It gives me a backup in all directions. With the twin (disruptor) guns forward, a torpedo launcher forward and a phaser bank aft, that little disruptor turret is handy..especially against mines or fighters. It also gives me just a tad more pressure on the enemy shields so I can keep them down while the torpedo is enroute.
Plus, like WoW you can get uncommon (green), rare (blue) (I think), and epic (purple) items for just about everything. Was mounting all uncommon quality weapons by the time I stopped...some got from drops, and some purchased via the main resource gathering method, scanning anomalies, and turning them in with some normal quality item to get an uncommon version (slighting improved)...at Memory Alpha.
Last place I stopped was at Deep Space Station K7 on the now hostile Klingon border.
Now with catgirls...well Caitians.

Star Trek Online got crushing reviews both on Metacritic and our local magazines, so it's a flop. Shame too, since I was interested for a while. Hopefully Star Wars: Old Republic fares better. Wouldn't count on it (looks clumsy).
Old Republic, you mean?
Well, that game is pretty much grabbing what we already know of MMO's and stuffing it with a good voice-acted story as a filling, then wrap a nice crispy Star Wars layer around it.
Ground breaking? Hardly. It tweaks what we already know. Will it work? Don't know, but since it's Star Wars and Bioware, I'll be playing either way.

The whole game wasn't bad...i enjoyed the space combats, but everything else wasn't implemented well..I'm waiting for the Old Republic now...possibly DCU online as well...You know what game I was hoping STO would be like was something similar to mass effect...

Now that this game has gone F2P, is anyone interested still?
Got into it and rolled a space dwarf. So far so good, felt like the good old days.
Would be interesting if we can travel to the JJ Abrams world using a wormhole.
