Source from: ANN (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2007-11-23/vampire-knight-shojo-manga-to-be-animated-for-tv) & Moonphase (http://www.moonphase.cc/).

Fans of the Vampire Knight (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=6873) manga (myself included) have been wanting this for some good time now. For anyone who's new to the series, plot taken from Wikipedia:

Vampire Knight primarily takes place in Cross Academy, a prestigious private school with an unusual class structure. The student body is divided into two classes: the Day Class, which is made up of ordinary students, and the Night Class, an elite group of 'beautiful people.' Unbeknownst to the majority of students, and even most of the staff, the Night Class is made up entirely of vampires. The heroine, Yuki Cross, is one of the few humans who knows the school's secret. She serves as a Guardian, dedicated to maintaining the peaceful coexistence of the Day and Night Classes with her childhood friend Zero, who lost his parents to vampires at an early age.

At the moment we have no news on air dates, or voice actors, though knowing it's going to happen is good enough for me.

I hope they do considering FukuJun and Junichi Suwabe are also in it.

This was also on my "manga I wanted animated" list so I was really happy when it was annoc. Kaname-sama on screen O_O.

Yeah, they're perfect for each role, so it would be kinda silly to just go with a complete new VA cast.

I can't wait to find out who'll be doing the music for this one (i'm sure that was expected). I need to know.

I'm looking forward to this anime as well. The story is one that should adapt well to an anime format. My biggest worry is the ending though since the manga is still ongoing. (Of course, that's a common concern for any ongoing manga that's adapted to an anime. :heh:)

Great news, though I only started reading this series some month back, should get back to it. I find the art style very appealing. Hopefully the anime comes out well.

To be honest the manga was pretty medicore. I may be male, but I like shoujo I guess. The relations and things that happen in this series lack logic. The only real plus about this series is the bishilicious art, but when a series gets animated that will take a downfall I guess.

While a guy can watch shoujo/josei, because they like the romance and the character relation. I wouldn't recommend this to any guy since the romance and the character relations are just big wtf. >_> I wouldn't recommend this to girls either, but hey girls seem to be going crazy about this series though I don't know why?

Vampire Knight is an angst fest. I mean, c'mon, you can just feel the emo-tasticness flowing through the series. Helps that it's pretty low on comedy, and the characters come across as being either emotional, distraught, cold or whatever.

I do like the atmosphere of the series that carries the characters among other things though. There's something about the setting, the mangaka's style, the dialogue, and the way the characters bring themselves (( Kaname and Zero are the best examples, both in a good and bad way. )) that...how should I put it... makes the reading experience cold, surreal and in a way, beautiful.

The anime will either be strangely immersing despite writing flaws/etc, or it'll suck. It all depends, I suppose.

Personally, i'm not all that certain that an anime adaptation can capture the beauty of the manga, the exact beauty that you have just explained. Either way i do look forward to seeing how they plan to tell this story.

After being forced by my older sister I read the first chapter some time ago and thought that it was boring and ridiulous, the art is not bad but...
Well, I might reconsider reading the series since FukuJun and Suwabe Junichi were in the cast of the drama CD which means that I'm going to watch the anime anyway...

The only thing i am concerned with is the material for the anime.Do they have enough material to do the anime?Recent chapters is very interesting but i dont think the anime will cover that since the ending will be like left hanging.Personally i dont mind such ending as long as they stick with the manga.

I dont know if this sound random, but i hope those people will animate Kaname properly since to me he already has that feminine look in the manga.I wish it wouldn't get worse in the anime adaptation

I wouldn't be surprised if they follow the manga towards the end of the TV series, then finish it of with a anime original ending. It's been done a number of times in the past, and seems like it'll happen again here.

At last, I understand why I like it.I am not a big fan but the atmosphere is indeed special.Kaname is intresting, and he contribute a lot to the mysterious atmopshere. It's an angst-fest but watching the cold Kaname elegantly killing his enemies makes it worthwhile.

I was excited when I heard about this, I want to see how they plan to make this angst fest manga into an even angst fest anime with the addition of dramatic or emotional music to further draw us into the scenes. I hope they don't censor the occasional scenes of blood found in the series, it needs to be like how it is in the manga just because any censoring kind of takes away a lot of the uhh... drama behind being a vampire and how they drink blood, get bitten and what not. If that made any sense.

Spring 2008 is looking pretty good.

I can imagine now as more people go insane as they watch this ridiculous triangle relationship of the wavering Yuki, the two faced Kaname and the master of emo and angst, Zero. Don't get me wrong here, I like VK... I have this sort of love hate relationship on it. I like it but it irritates me to no end at the same time. I love the school uniforms though, I expect even more Vampire Knight cosplayers once this comes out.

Yeah; the characters in VK are quite twisted in a way. Yuki is you're typical shoujo char who loves to butt in on other peoples business(she greatly reminds me of the main female char on B.O.D.Y.); Zero gets it all good on Yuki wonder why he's still so whiny and emo about it. Kaname, hes the mysterious type who you don't know wtf is he thinking about (though hes pretty cool and I guess the eye candy of the manga for the girls).

Don't get me wrong too. I love VK too. lol.

Spring 08? That's pretty awesome. xDD. My friend forced my to read VK yesterday and I'm all done today. I think the plot is somewhat confusing and some of the characters are hard to distinguish from others. I think the art style is pretty neat though. (But their necks are way too long sometimes)

Mmm... this is my first Shoujo anime despite me being a girl. haha. The love triangle is driving me insane. I can't decide who Yuuki's gonna be with... yeah. There's gonna be a lot of blood in the anime. I hope they don't mess the art up.

Woah, the character designs there look excellent. I'm so happy this didn't turn out to be like Special A *cries over Special A's treatment*. Kaname looks like... Kaname the most. Zero's alright, only Yuuki looks a bit more off. But her anime self still manages to retain some sort of her cuteness. She looks really thin though (okay I know she is thin but I don't notice that as much in the manga). And her thinness makes her neck look really long. Heh, just nitpicking.

The manga is amazing and chillingly dark- I love it <3

i'm wondering how much of the manga story the anime will cover because there are only 37 chapters to work off of. Considering how slowly the VK plot is moving, that's not very much material.

maybe they will conclude the anime in an original way?

i'll be so pissed if it's less than 26 eps because i see no way of stuffing such a good story in less than 26 eps.

what i think of the seiyuu for the anime:

Zero's voice is played by Light from death note which is kind of too dark for this character I think. I thought Kyo's voice from fruit basket would suit better because Kyo reminds me of Zero.

Yuki's voice i think it's pretty good using Toru's voice both are pretty outspoken and dopey, clumsy kind of girl.

Takuma Ichijou should be done by Souichiro Hoshi because he's usually so cheering and so.

Souichiro Hoshi shouldn't be doing Senri Shiki

2008-03-03, 13:26
Yeah Seiyuu can do different ranges. Mamoru Miyano does pretty boy sounding and dark/quiet much like I think Zero is like. As for Tomokazu Seki he usually does voices for spaz type characters aka Kyou. Zero does not have the same personality as Kyou at all >.>

I thought Mamoru was a great match for Zero ^-^

Having now read the first two volumes of Vampire Knight (Zero > Kaname!!) I think Mamoru's "darker" voice would suit Zero more than his "lighter" one.

I agree. Something mildly close to his Light in Death Note, but not quite so overindulged.

gah. Waiting for the fourth volume to be released in four weeks. :(

Can't wait to see Yui Horie's Yuki. Even though she's one of my personal favourites, she may make Yuki seem overly cute (Even though she really is in the manga.), but Tohru in Fruits Basket worked out fine, and if she sticks to something like her Kotori (Look down) tone, I think it'll work out fine.

A trailer is now up on the website (http://www.vampire-knight.jp/special.html).

Unfortunately, it's nothing much - a bunch of pictures put together, a few of them being new screenshots. The OP (which now has a name - Futatsu no Kodou to Akai Tsumi, by ON/OFF) is also playing, though I can't say I'm very fond of it.
A trailer with actual animation would give us such a better idea... I can't even tell if I like the characters' looks with these few pictures (Kaname did look perfectly fine... Yuuki not so much).

Deen are like J.C Staff when it comes to animation, churn out a lot of average to good crap and than surprise you with something great every now and than (Simoun for DEEN, Shigofumi for J.C Staff). I don't think either company as far as tv series go has produced anything better in the last 4-5 years than R.O.D TV which they both worked on.

I've read all the volumes released in English, so I'm definitely interested. However, I'm kind of cautious of watching the anime because studio Deen is handling it. When I think of Deen I always think back to the first season of Higurashi. The animation was :dots: and they took out a lot of subtle-but nonetheless-important scenes. Also looking at the trailer I can't help but think that it makes it look like some kind of dating game or whatever those are called. :heh: It's probably because of the animation. Right now my standards for the anime is low but if studio Deen proves me wrong then alright.

Hmm, seems like some of the names were spelled differently (or downright wrong) in the promo vid. The most glaring (to me anyways) was Kaname's last name. They had it as Clan and not Kuran. Personally, I prefer Kuran. Clan...is just bad.

Guido

I have already watched the teaser trailer in which the TV-sized version of the opening song plays along.

During the last three months, I have seen and heard this title receiving much hype due to the popularity of the manga.

It is because of how much Vampire Knight has been restlessly discussed on the forums, that I have decided to pick up this title for the spring season.

Definitely shoujo quality judging at the focus invested upon the details to the eclecticism and depth of the eyes.

I have a general understanding of what the plot is about, as well that they'll be using the entire voice cast from the Drama CD's in the anime.

About which group should be best for the opening song, I do not deny that ALI Project would have made wonders with the performance for the music themes.

Though I like the singer, the morbid and gothic dramatization of the opening song would be nicely complemented if Yousei Teikoku (Noble Roar, Innocent Venus OP theme; Shijun no Zankoku, Venus Versus Virus ED theme) performs the ending song for Vampire Knight.

I actually really liked how the day class uniforms looked. There are so many pretty elements in the manga that I feel you don't realize how gorgeous the uniforms are until you see them colored here :heh:. There were also a few new shots of Zero, which were somewhat of an improvement imo. And of course, Yui Horie just sounds perfect.

Strangely, I must admit that the OP has quickly grown on me. Even though I found it horribly plain when I first heard it..? :eyespin:

I actually really liked how the day class uniforms looked. There are so many pretty elements in the manga that I feel you don't realize how gorgeous the uniforms are until you see them colored here :heh:. There were also a few new shots of Zero, which were somewhat of an improvement imo. And of course, Yui Horie just sounds perfect.
I'm actually rather amazed with how well the animation is looking, just from that 30 second trailer. Damn sexy, the way it should be looking.

& yes, Yui Horie is sounding like the perfect choice for Yuki. Just what i like to hear.

The Japanese Wiki seems to mention this person (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=10407) as the composer.

Sadly, I've only seen Miyori no Mori out of all his works... and I can't say I remember how good the music was in these ~90 minutes, so I can hardly know what to expect.

Actually gonna try to post a coherent review of epi one and not just sound like an idiot fangirl :heh:

FukuJun using his Watanuki voice surprised me but I really liked it for Aido. Since I didnt watched La Corda I wasnt sure about Kaname's voice but it fits, its nice and smooth (and omg is he HOT! ~ahem~) Yep Zero (ok watching 2 shows with a character named Zero in it :heh:) sounds like Raito, figured but not complaining! I actually like that voice over his Tamaki one. I havent read the first few chaps of VK in a while but I was surprised at the shoujo comedic aspect of it, I dont remember that but again its been a while. Neuro/Luck Gandor's seiyuu as the Headmaster was perfect, I love how he sounds. All in all good epi. I will say I REALLY liked the background music even though Im still on the fence about the OP.

Seen episode 1...again its NOT HD ...*hides in her special made hole

Zero's voice is ...PERFECT, I like this voice over Tamaki's or Raito's voice for some reason. I didn't like Kadame's voice, sounded a little too soft. Yui Horie is as great as expected <3

Animation...was okay. Some shots are drawn really nice, looks exectly like the manga. Some shots looked...not so good. My favourite scene is the part were Yuki pulls her....weapon out. Thats the only thing I liked.

Not too fond of the opening, the ending gave a good dark feel. The background music was nice, suitable for the anime. Alot of classical like music ;P

Episode 01 screencaps and summary (http://www.designchronicle.com/memento/archives/vampire_knight_ep01.html)

I'm impressed. I didn't expect the series to be a combination of genuine tension and comedic scenes. The character design are surprisingly attractive despite what the trailer implies. What impresses me the most, however, is the OP theme, which suits the series really well.

I've been watching the first eps of pretty much all the new series, but haven't been doing much background reading on them - I came into this series knowing pretty much nothing.

My impressions? Well, I enjoyed the first ep a lot - will definitely watch the 2nd. Hmm, Yuki's very cute.

Still, I kinda wonder about the long-term potential of the series - I may be wrong, but I feel like I can see through most of the characters.

-This was a lighthearted first episode but it should get much darker very soon
-LOVE the character designs- just as good as the manga.
-Whose hand could Yuki be kissing in the OP? Mystery!
-Already see the conflict between Kaname and Zero
-Overall, amazing and I can't wait for more!

Hm ... the first episode left a much better impression than i expected it to. My only real complaint would be the comedy antics, which feel stupidly out of place. There is nothing that annoys me like uncalled for comedy during "dark" themed shows. I can only hope it will go away once things get more serious (and from the looks of it they will), instead of being a constant thorn in my enjoyment.

The animation is generally pretty decent, although there were some questionable shots a few times. The Seiyuu are doing a good job with the main characters i think; definitely underlines their personalities. The Music was rather forgettable though ...i already can't remember any BGM or anything :heh:

The story seems to be promising and potentially quite dark - count me in for the ride. If we ignore the rampant comedy act, this is one of the more enjoyable shows this season for me.

ep 1
Whaaaa, so many pretty guys :uhoh: :D

I really liked the ep actually. It was a nice start with a somewhat different premise. It's not everyday you see vampire and humans so close to each other, this is bound to cause problems as already seen when some vampires are failing to hold their urges. Seems like there is some great conspiracy plotting somewhere deep in the vampire lair.

I really like the style, mood and designs of the series. The random comedy/chibi scenes remind me so much of zombie loan, I just can't hate it ^^

Things are just starting off and I'm sure there are a few more surprises to come. Besides the already hint that zero (lol now why is there another zero XD) is a vampire whatever the breed. This must have something to do with his hate.

Looks very promising indeed so hope the quality keeps upThat adaptation was the work of Nishida Asako. She also did the character designs for Fate/Stay Night and Touka Gettan, and actually did completely original designs for Simoun. I have some confidence that she made the designs repeatable, since she was animation director of those other three shows, and knows what can happen to designs in the heat of production.

Another series I originally planned never to watch, but ended up watching because people hype it up to be so good, like that Special A.

OP - Oh, nice job!
ED - Woah... creepy!

Wah-geh-hyaa, wayyy too bishonen to look at, all of them... *looks to the side*

What's Kaname's last name? Clown?

Wow, great episode. The humor falls flat pretty much constantly, but I got absorbed into the mood pretty quickly. Also, pretty creepy when it needs too. Soundtrach helps here too...
Characters are interesting too. Zero seems to be a vampire or something similar, and the ED makes me worry about Yuki's future.
Voices were pretty good too, with some pretty familiar sounding ones...
Animation was fine too. Sasuga, shojo manga.

Interesting first episode, so I'll follow this and see where it leads, though I won't expect successful comedy.

Vampires kawai, kawai~~ Kukuku...
For now, I'd gladly root for Zero (what a name...) to exterminate the vampires. They haven't exactly done anything likable either.

Preview: Memory of blood; what, no actual preview?...

Hope this won't induce nightmares...

The animation quality is stellar! It resembles so closely to the manga that makes me squee in delight. I hope this quality in character and background details keep for the rest of the series. (And I hope the series is long. I don't like very long anime series but for once, I actually want this series to be long. XD) One major thing about the anime that I totally love is the animation of the eye colour - changing to blood red in their blood-thirst mode. That's something you can't get from a static black & white manga.

All the seiyuu fit perfectly to each character. When VK was announced to be animated, I was afraid of what type of voices Kaname and Zero will be given - especially when I found out that Kaname's voice will be played by the same seiyuu as Yunoki in La Corda since I didn't like his voice there but now I see that he made slight changes that fit perfectly for Kaname. WHOO!...they are PERFECT! I pretty much imagined Kaname to have that smooth, soft, silky tone with an undertone of darkness. Very nice. And Zero's voice is beyond excellent.

The comedy was well-placed. Unlike some anime where the serious tones are abruptly interrupted by comedy, VK did the transitions between seriousness and comedy quite smoothly. I love the principal's expression when he got his desk fixed by Yuuki.

The music...I'll be the first in line to get it when the OST is out. :heh: I love the OP. I think it fits quite well. And the ED theme is quite good too, providing a darker feel to the closure of each episode.

Overall, the first episode meets my expectations and had me melting with all the hot bishies (and a half-naked Zero ). *fans self*

It's Kaname Clan.

It starts off slightly light-hearted but gets darker as the story progresses - you can already sense the underlying tone in this first episode.

I don't know how Clan/Kuran is actually written in Japanese or how that's interpreted into English but based just on listening to what they say, I think Kuran is a Japanese mis-pronunciation of Clan; since Japanese people can't say "Cl" without adding a vowel sound in between the two letters. Sort of like how Yuuki Cross is pronounced (and sometimes spelled as it is pronounced) as Kurossu (or something like that).

I'm just going to go with Clan for the anime, since that's the official spelling apparently.

While I agree that "Clan" is probably the closest pronunciation for 「クラン」, the problem comes when we have to say something like "Kaname comes from 'Clan' clan" X(

Although I suppose one can say "Kaname comes from 'Clan' family". Let's just hope that if there's group feud in the story, it'd be between different families of vampires instead of different clans of vampires.

Yes, but (having seen Fruits Basket and Marimite) it seems that they fixed the "nose problem" in this adaptation, though it wasn't that big of a deal.

Well, the replacement for KimiKiss and True Tears has arrived for me. Although this time around, I'm pretty ambivalent between the two LIs, as they can be both considered osana-najimi lol. So I don't really care if they don't end this conclusively (which they most probably won't); it's going to be one or the other. XD

Very good start. Hocchan was just marvelous, ranging from her strict to her embarassed side as usual. I usual am not that interested in vampire romances, but geez, even I want to bite Yuuki's neck lol.

And I find it quite interesting that Zero is a vampire (hello blood tablets and urge to bite Yuuki's neck?), yet he hates them with a passion. Probably got turned into a vampire unwillingly with the attack. Embrace the dark side like your namesake, Zero...

Also, I really, REALLY dig those uniforms. God, so stylish for both men and women... and zettai ryouiki (especially black) is always a plus in my book lol.

All in all, this series is up there in my enjoyment level. Still have to see Special A before making a decision, but this is definitely one of the best this season.

All around, a great introduction into the series. It covered a lot of ground: introduced major characters, alluded to mysterious back stories, and set up relationship conflicts between the major characters and also between the major characters and some minor characters all with pretty eye candy and chibi comic relief. The OP sequence seems standard. But the ED sequence and song creeps me out. It manages to be simple and yet chill-inducing, all the more so because it is a simple sequence. Thumbs up for a satisfying first episode.

Zeroooo. <3 Zero's expressions are really great. Yuuki is so cute too!

.......*pushes Kaname away from Yuuki*:p Though I admit, he's much better-looking than the manga Kaname. But NO! I refuse to become a Kaname fangirl!

Oh about his name....normally, I'd argue that is HAS to be Kuran since it is in kanji and not katakana, yet Matsuri (the manga-ka) is odd about their names. Zero's name kanji is 零, yet it's still pronounced ゼロ. So who the heck knows but Matsuri. :heh:

The ending....is creeeepy.:uhoh:

I do believe that people prejudge gonzo too much though. The can so some pretty good hits once in a while (and hopefully SA is one of them).
You need to keep in mind that the good Gonzo shows are usually the ones with solid background material --- Special A being one of them. I really don't see how they can miss up after the pretty well done first episode.

Anyway, as i said i have high hopes for the Vampire Knight adaptation, just that i can see the animation dropping sometime soon.

Drama, supernatural, romance

ANN lists it as "drama, romance, supernatural"......

The manga is published by Hakusensha ... most of their titles seem to be shounen or something close by (includes Ai Yori Aoshi for example).

I'm always curious why the japanese label genre matters since has more to do with who published it than the actual content matter.

The Japanese genre labels (shounen, shoujo, josei, seinen) indicate the target audience rather than the story's true genre. Having said that, Vampire Knight runs in the monthly magazine Lala which is squarely aimed at the shoujo marketing demographic not the shounen one.

Seen as they haven't listed "comedy" as a genre, maybe people will get their wishes for this to be more a more serious theme. (Or that they missed it off).

This show revives my dormant fangirl tendencies haha

"Having to deal with them screaming "kya kya kya" everyday" LMAO Zero's attitude reminds me of Kyo from fruit basket, Kaname is more like Yuki.

Anyway, I think this show is definitely extraordinary and I totally love the plot. The art is beautiful, everything is beautiful. The heroine isn't one of those dormat heroines too. That's a biiiig plus. I can't find anything wrong with this at all from start to finish. I'm so going to love this show.

Yes, the Headmaster is well done, and the hints are really nice. :D I basically don't have any criticism to the first episode at all. I think it was all really well laid out and conducted; I didn't find the comedic inserts too overbearing. It was funny and balanced out with the underlying dark tone. Having said that, I hope they don't plan to maintain that level of comedy for the rest of the series because that certainly would not work.

ED, yeah. Although it is creepy, it is really good and fits perfectly as an ending to this series.

Also, Zero's character seems to come across even better in the anime (at least for the first episode), in my opinion.

I would label it as more of a non-concrete love triangle...well, that's how the manga came off to me, anyway.

From the looks of the OP (you know- the part where Yuki is kissing a mysterious hand), she just might choose between Zero and Kaname in the end. Hurray for an original ending!

Even so, i'm not a huge fan of how the humor in the anime completely destroys the dark atmosphere set in a few scenes --- the night classroom scene for example. It was never like that in the manga.

That's probably my only disappointment with the anime adaptation, though it's nothing at all major.

Success. To me, it had the exact same feel as the manga. I don't like that studio for animation and for pacing, but it's impossible for those things to be ruined in the case of Vampire Knight, and they put the budget in... so, cool. I knew it was a good decision to stop reading the manga and wait for the anime. :)

I checked this show out of curiosity, therefore, my expectations were not on the high side of the scale. Not to mention that, with the exception of Hellsing OAV, I was often disappointed by the japanese's take on vampire mythos.

Without spoiling anything, let us just say that nothing is ever obvious.

This anime is a drama, so don't expect major actions like Blade or anything like that. Also, the anime is a drama, romance, and supernatural - notice the absence of the comedy genre in the listing.

I don't quite understand about the studio bashing business. I just go with the anime; if it's good then I'll watch, if not then I won't. Simple as that. There's no need to bash the studio. True, if you don't get the anime style/performance you want for a particular anime then you will certainly be disappointed but, hey, that's how it is sometimes. Fortunate for my expectations, the VK anime has (for a first episode) met my expectation. If they stick to the manga, they'll do just fine. :)

Its always great when you expectation are met with a new series. They animated Zero (who is my favorite character) exactly the way i had hoped his silver eye and tragic eyes compliment his blunt and troubled personality quite well, even his voice is as i had imagined it.

I also loved many of the little symbolisms they have through out the OP the ED and the series it self. The most prominent would be the uniforms of Cross academy. The day class sport black uniforms while the night class are cast with a pure white, i dont think i need elaborate further. Also, the ending with Yuki sitting in the corner with a glass of blood on the stand but surrounded by blue roses is another visual eye catching scene.

Yuki, is as i had hoped she would be too. Her bubbling happy yet confused and some what dimwitted personality is showcased and portrayed appropriately in my opinion. The way she goes about her duties as prefect and even her habits in class are follow the manga quite well. Plus they couldn't have done the headmaster any better he is just a riot and says some hilarious things, even though when i looks at him i am somewhat reminded of Abel Nightroad maybe its the glasses.

The personalties of the noble vampires are stand quite well too, especially Kaname and Ichijou. The blood eye color they display at night is frightenly beautiful . There is something alluring about a creature that is beautiful on the outside but is a beast on the inside. I actually like the adaptation they have taken from Vampire folklore about there being purebloods vampires.

The animation is gorgeous with a very dark and Gothic feel to it. Even the clothes scream Gothic. So far it looks like they are following the manga quite closely but that doesnt mean we wont see original material later on. Very solid start i will be watching with great interest.

I see the complaints have started already, well ill just say this any misconception you have about this being a simple love triangle, comedy series should be thrown out right now. There is plenty of good material to work with and there will be some major surprises to people. The humor side goes away fairly quickly and gets down to some serious yet tragic stuff. This is not another Rosario or Karin, to me this is a true vampire series if your not convinced by episode 5 then maybe its not for you but i highly doubt most people will be disappointed.

Very excited!
I have to say that the first episode covered the first chapters very nicely, and I like that they're already covering Zero. Looking at it animation-wise, it was O.K. being that they missed key elements at a distance making them look like clay figures. The seiyus were PERFECT, and I thought that every voice suited each character (mostly Kain...and Yuki). The OP and ED were well suited with the "dark" theme, which freaked me out at the ED.
Also, Chairman Cross=win! The daddy bit was so funny!! ^_^

This has everything for you, huh?
Double osana najimi power, no lolis, no yuri, but lots of non-humans (who aren't dolls).
Actually, my anti-non-human stance extends to EVERY non-human, vampires included as well (Arcueid for example, fails to interest me in that regard). It just so happens I call my absolute moe property 'absolute' for a reason, and I'd still find Yuuki interesting even in the case she does get bit by a vampire. ;)

:twitch:
Ehhh.
If there's one thing this series did well, is that it showed how delicious Yuuki's neck is. At ~18:00 and especially at ~21:00... even non-vampire males would want to sink their fangs on that lovely piece of flesh. :p

Special A is Gonzo.
Done.
I never ever let the studio (or any external factors at that) affect my view of a show. I simply just judge a show by its own merits, like it should be.

Yay, finally watched Episode 1. I've been eagerly waiting for this anime ever since it was announced. :)

First of all, I thought the OP was average/unspectacular which was disappointing. I was actually hoping for something more (i.e. more exciting/spoiler-ish content) but the song seems to fit this series very well. And yes, the ED song is pretty creepy. At first I thought that the mirror Yuuki is holding was some sort of ugly light saber... err, yeah lol. :uhoh: :heh:

And I agree with those of you that said that the voices fit very well with the characters. Fukuyama Jun seems to be everywhere this season and almost in everything I'm watching, not that that's a bad thing. ;)

Anyways, the episode itself was great. It followed the manga pretty closely and the pacing was fine. Hopefully it will continue this way in future episodes. Quality-wise, the episode looked great at some parts and err, not so great at others. But overall, it's what was expected for the first episode of a series. However, I'll be bracing myself for a huge quality drop in future episodes..

So unless they mess it up or if something goes horribly wrong, I will be faithfully following this series (along with Special A) 'til the very end. :D

Is it abnormal to get multiple shojo series in the same season? With none (that I was aware of) last season, and at least three airing simultaneously this season, the contrast is striking. Maybe it's simply coincidence?

Anyhow, animation is decent, characters seem interesting and the VAs are solid. It remains to be seen if they'll manage create something original with the somewhat stale vampire theme. For now, I'll probably drop Itazura na Kiss and follow this instead.

WOW. I wasn't expecting much with this show, but... damn. I have completely and utterly fallen in love with it after episode 1. I don't think there is a single thing I didn't like about it. VK has now surpassed Kure-nai to become my 3rd favorite of this season (right behind Macross Frontier and Code Geass R2). As for the "creepy" ED, it is the best I have heard in a LONG time and easily trumps any other from this season (then again, I'm sort of into dark themes like that). Releases for this series will be heavily anticipated by me in the future.

One thing that has been bothering me - it was only a little bit, but Aido did bite Yuuki. Isn't that supposed to have some consequences ? (Though hard to tell for me without knowing how exactly the vampire lore works in VK). Or perhaps the lack of any consequences is a hint in itself ? If i assume the second, it gives some room for speculation tied together with another element - her memory loss. Obviously she didn't lose her memories prior to 10 years just like that - there has got to be something behind it.

At the moment i can think of two possibilities - first would be that she is some sort of a "doll" (this would tie nicely with the ED). Some sort of a "clone" (perhaps of the real Yuuki who would be dead?) or artificial human, created 10 years ago for some purpose, but somehow ended up being saved by Kaname. That would explain her memory lapse and maybe why she is not affected by the bite - she wouldn't be a "real" human.

The other far fetched theory i have is that she actually could be a vampire herself ... who somehow got sealed 10 years ago and lost all her memories of before, thus forgetting her vampire self. This would explain why she is not affected by the bite and would explain why the headmaster was willing to take her in - both her and Zero are special cases. The problem i have with this is that i don't think a simple memory loss would make things like bloodlust go away.

Oh well, don't mind me - just rambling here ... its just that i get the feeling there will be much more going on than a simple pseudo love triangle :p

Wow. Impressive. :D

But to throw something in, if a bite from a vampire does turn her into a vampire then why is Yuuki being so nonchalant about it? (More importantly, Zero didn't seem to care; in the case that a bite turns one, I would suspect he would be more disturbed). She even said, "...if it really was like in the legends, I would probably become a vampire."

Hm, good point. Thats why i said its hard for me to speculate without knowing how the vampire lore works here. But, here is a thought - being a vampire himself, it might not be impossible for Zero to have some insight regarding Yuuki's true self (assuming that is indeed the case and i am not just being delusional). If she is indeed something "abnormal"(which i find very likely) chances are high the headmaster would know and had informed Zero about some of the circumstances to avoid conflict/help cover the truth.

Now, about Zero - his family was slaughtered by vampires, and he was turned in to one obviously against his will. Only way i know how to achieve that is to get bitten by a vampire ... well there are always necromantic and other dark rituals, but i think we can safely rule those out and fiction generally doesn't use them anyway.

And consider this - if she indeed is a vampire (or a "doll"), that means the headmaster has been hiding the truth from her for various reasons (perhaps he wants her to live a normal life ? Perhaps her vampire self was so dangerous it had to be sealed? To protect herself from her past?). Now, given the environment she lives in, he must have considered the possibility of such accruing. We can also assume that all she knows about vampires as the "truth" has been told by the headmaster. If he indeed wants to conceal her true identity (be it a vampire or a "doll"), him telling her lies (to put it bluntly) to provide explanation for such situations is not unimaginable.

... or i might be completely in the left field, providing good material for the manga readers to laugh at. Who knows :p

I just went away to read chapter one of the manga to see how it compares. I liked it a lot but its impossible not to be drawn to the striking colours and designs in the anime....as what is obviously going to be a "good" adaptation the narrative flow of the anime seems to me to be a little better.

I'm torn because I'm so tempted to read on to find out what happens.....but at the same time I want to savour this anime. heh maybe I'm overplaying it a bit here, its definitely old-hat and generic but I thought well put together and such good fun. Am I the only person who feels that this anime is also really quite erotic? I mean, forget Kanokon or To Love Ru, lack of fanservice is much sexier.

After watching the first ep I decided to read the whole manga (up to chapter 38). The manga moves pretty fast, leading me to suspect it could end in a few more chapters - would make for a good 26-ep TV series. If it doesn't, I guess we'll get an anime original ending (though that could happen anyway).

There is a "bad patch" about half-way through where I was bothered by the angst level and story direction which almost made me stop reading, but I'm glad I continued.

Anyway, Zero's situation will be explained pretty quickly. We'll have to wait quite a bit longer for the opening scene to be properly explained. Here's a general little note which is already seen in the first ep though not fully explained - in this series, there are multiple grades of vampire at a biological level.

I'm torn because I'm so tempted to read on to find out what happens.....but at the same time I want to savour this anime.

Exactly how i'm feeling now, in fact it took me a lot of self-control to tear myself away starting from chapter 22 so I could fully enjoy the anime. In fact I'm still kicking myself for even starting it.

Am I the only person who feels that this anime is also really quite erotic? I mean, forget Kanokon or To Love Ru, lack of fanservice is much sexier.
well vampires especially in shoujo manga have always had a bit of the erotic feel, in the sense that even the bite is considered as a vampire kiss. Look forward to how they actually animate those scenes :D

With the amount of shoujo animes this season I was expecting at least one to get its subforum, hopefully VK has a chance

but it's impossible for those things to be ruined in the case of Vampire Knight
So basically you're saying the source material is that good, that nothing can mess it up? What?

This show need to find a middle ground, I dont like how the atmosphere makes sudden 180's
Exactly. It was done how it should be done in the manga --- it's like they're ignoring that fact in the adaptation.

I see what your saying and how some people might be confused. The folklore or myth they are using here indicates a bite must occur for a human to become a vampire both fangs piercing the skin (there are actually more precise rules about how a person is turned but they they are manga spoilers). If you look more closely Aido didnt actually bite Yuki he basically scratched her with his fang, they are just playing on a thin line the camera kind of moves for a second making it look like a bite.

Even though he was intoxicated by the smell of her blood he knows very well what biting a human on Campus grounds would lead too and the punishment he would receive from Kaname and Zero alike he was just playing around with Yuki but a very bad joke indeed as we saw what happen afterward.

Heh, well yeah, I guess that didn't come out quite right. Vampires are generally considered erotic, but I guess the point that I was failing to make was that VK is....doing a good job of it. A lot of vampire narratives are just tits and gore (or in R +V's case, knickers and stuff) whereas I think that the whole design of VK, with the contrast between the blacks, whites and heavy doses of red, along with a very sexy, potential dangerous romance narrative works a treat.

Nice episode. It wasn't great or anything like that but it was intriguing. At the ED I saw the girl having red eyes, I wonder if Kaname bit her and then erased/altered her memory when she was 5. Zero is definitely a vampire. I wonder if he is half vampire or full vampire or if there are stages to becoming a vampire and he is on stage 1.

Well I'll just watch some more. I hate anime like these that come from the manga, they are usually very limited in the ending. I hope they handle it well.

Oh wow. I never had any expectation for this show, even lower than Zettai Karen and it blew me away.

The visuals is probably Studio Deen's best (I was shocked when I saw the ending credits), the seiyuu work is amazing thanks to its allstar cast (Yori sounding like Shigofumi's Fumika, and Zero reminded me of Setsuna F Seiei but both awesome).

The plot is already thickening by end of episode 1, and the most important of all: The vampires actually seem really threatening compared to the action-anime vampires that seem more human and don't really have the power of allure mythical, romantic vampires are supposed to have.

As for the music, it's all very stereotypically gothic, but I really wouldn't have it any other way. The ED sounds genuinely creepy and the cathedral/Gregorian chants set a pretty dark mood. I love it. Not exactly what I desired after having a nightmare just now, but the show actually was still pretty creepy despite a real nightmare. heh

Zero is definitely a vampire. I wonder if he is half vampire or full vampire or if there are stages to becoming a vampire and he is on stage 1.

Let me refer you to my earlier comment on this:
Anyway, Zero's situation will be explained pretty quickly. We'll have to wait quite a bit longer for the opening scene to be properly explained. Here's a general little note which is already seen in the first ep though not fully explained - in this series, there are multiple grades of vampire at a biological level.

Once we get into Zero's background story-arc (a few eps most likely) then we'll get the outline explanation of how things work in this series. It would be easy to spoil things so I'm trying to avoid that - besides, it's not impossible that the anime will take a different tack, though there's no indication of that so far.

^^ moments like that don't happen often much in the manga. humor goes out the window soon. (unless they change it from the source material)

so i'm looking forward to see what they'll animate in the show. there's a lot story to choose from and a whole bunch of omgwtf moments.

Nice episode. It wasn't great or anything like that but it was intriguing. At the ED I saw the girl having red eyes, I wonder if Kaname bit her and then erased/altered her memory when she was 5.

According to Senestra, where bitten = turning - If Kaname had bitten her, then wouldn't she be a Vampire right now? But from episode one, one gets the sense that she isn't - otherwise, Zero wouldn't be so kind to her.

EDIT:

Hm, good point. Thats why i said its hard for me to speculate without knowing how the vampire lore works here. But, here is a thought - being a vampire himself, it might not be impossible for Zero to have some insight regarding Yuuki's true self (assuming that is indeed the case and i am not just being delusional). If she is indeed something "abnormal"(which i find very likely) chances are high the headmaster would know and had informed Zero about some of the circumstances to avoid conflict/help cover the truth.

...

If Zero has the faintest notion that Yuuki is a vampire (that is, IF she is truly a vampire as you speculate) then I wouldn't think he'd be so comfortable around her, least of all show such kindness to her (ie. use his tie to stop her bleeding). The hatred we know Zero harbours for Vampires is much too great for him to make any exceptions, even when it comes to Yuuki.

About the Headmaster hiding secrets, it's obvious he knows more about the current situation than he lets on. One interesting quote he said (more under his breath) in response to Zero's demand that someone else do the prefecture work was that the prefecture duties could only be carried out by Yuuki and Zero, then he continued by saying it was because they were the only ones he can trust. But from the way he said the first line, makes one wonder.

ROD had a nice, clean look (that clean look may be attributable to JC Staff). Simoun was pretty. The thing with Touka Gettan was how drastic its look was at times. Not as consistent, but when it was pretty, it was eyepopping for me. But Vampire Knight seems to be a return to form for the most part. The animation was nice and fluid too, for being a shoujo show.

Oh well, don't mind me - just rambling here ... its just that i get the feeling there will be much more going on than a simple pseudo love triangle :p

also only pure-bloods can turn a human to vampire... it is only mention that kaname is pureblood while others in the school are aristocrat and higher so most likely aido isn't a pureblood cuz it seems like kaname is more superior: here's the vampire pyramid: Pureblood>aristocrat> normal>exhuman vamp>failed ex human vamp http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/00/Vampire.jpg/180px-Vampire.jpg
