OMG
THIRD SEASON ANNOUNCED!!!
http://blog.animate.tv/higurashi/
Damn this computer and inablity to display japanese.
I wonder if they're going to do THAT arc Or maybe a crossover with Umineko
For those that have watched the episode as it aired, what this event (http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/6851/jotaroqt1.jpg) included in the anime? I don't want anything else spoiled, but my curiosity is killing me.

Running the article through Google translator indicates that information regarding the content of the show has yet to be released. I too found this to be quite surprising. They could animate some of the side stories, such as Yoigoshi-hen or Onisarashi-hen but wouldn't they feel rather disjointed if they were aired back to back?
OMG
THIRD SEASON ANNOUNCED!!!
http://blog.animate.tv/higurashi/
That really surprised me. If that is a fact and not a joke, then I'm a bit surprised. Maybe it was requested by the author to include the true end to the story?
I guess it would be Saikoroshi-hen, Hirukowashi-hen, Utsutsukowashi-hen, and Miotsukushi-hen
I'm kind of hoping they don't do a 3rd season, as it would kind of break the flow.

hmmm
I wonder if it will be some extra stuff from the manga like utsutsukowashi, yoigoshi, onisarashi...
If it is something like this, now that everyone knows the mysteries and culprits, these stories will lose a part of their impact
The same goes for the PS2 arcs
I can only imagine saikoroshi-hen (there's not much stuff here to fill many episodes, at most, 3 or 4 eps)
Other than that, all they can do is make a comedy anime using stuff from drama-cd's, manga's one-shots, higurashi daybreak or comedic stuff that was in the original novels and did not make into the anime

Wow, a third season? I think nobody saw that coming...
Anyways I would like it they animated the arcs from Higurashi Rei or the new arcs from the PS2 game. I don't know japanese so anything is profit! =)
Hell yeah.
This was one hell of a surprise.

Brilliant news about the third season, though don't you think most of this posts about it belong in a third season thread?

yes yes here too!! :) i'm really really happy it's not over yet, because i love this anime very very much. ... but i wonder, what the story will be like.
edit: argh, i mean the story, not the anime -__-;! i love the story itself, not the anime lol.
I'm hoping for a reworked, 12 epsiodes of Tatarigoroshi-hen :heh:
From the way it is going, they might be doing another Yakusamashi-hen-ish arc to include all the stuff that they have been taken out...
Somehow I highly doubt it (and may get flammed for?), if they don't have enough to work with they'll make up new arcs? I don't know; just a thought.
I didn't expect this to happen.
But why not?^^
How about hirukowashi-hen. :D

I would like to see some of the ps2/ manga arcs animated. It'd be great so see Natsumi animated~ I wouldn't really want it to be another 24-26 episode serires again, though. xD; Possibly 13? :3

Considering 26 wasn't long enough for the first six arcs, I don't think 13 episodes is such a good idea.

I think Christmas came early for me this year. Its a fantastic surprise for me. I do wonder about where they're gonna get material, though.
Is it just me, or is my cynicism just acting up again, that I'm thinking they'll just franchise it and in five years we'll have another cash cow like Evangelion?

By the way, when I was in Japan I never really thought Hirgurashi was that popular.
I knew it had a big fan following, but big enough for a live action movie and ANOTHER season? o.o

I sort of have mixed feelings about this third season. I mean, as much as I like Higurashi and everything, I don't see what more can they show us after Matsuribayashi-hen. Wouldn't doing the manga arcs be somewhat anti-climatic? We know how it ends already, then we go back and see more reruns of Rika's life and what would've happened if the village was killed? I don't really like that idea.
If it is going to be short, like a 12 episode season or something like that, and we see more from the pieces (like Hanyuu's past), and Saikoroshi-hen, then I'd definitely be interested.

Oh WOW this just made my day.
Here's to hoping Natsumi'll be in it - and maybe the so called "true end" arc from the PS2. *__*

2007-12-17, 21:33
Hmm. Interesting, but there's is the question of which arcs they'll do. "Dice Killing" is pretty much a given I'm sure, seeing how it basically follows Matsuribayashi-hen.

WHAT A TWIST!
QFT. :D
It does kinda seem like overkill now. Maybe just a 13 episode series of the real ending or possibly the arc(s) with Natsumi?
I'd have much more wanted a Umineko anime... NEEDS MOAR HANYUU.
Hmm... well it would have sense if they are maknig Miotsukushi and Saikoroshi, however as much as I would see Natsumi chan animated I don't see how they will manage not to break continuity
SirusRiddler
2007-12-17, 21:43
Well I think they found a great seiyuu for Natsumi already (see: Higurashi Daybreak). I think Season 3 should just comprise of Onisarashi-hen, Saikoroshi-hen, and Miotsukushi-hen but not in that particular order.
Yeah indeed, hence why I am looking forward to seeing her animated since they already got Kaori Mizuhashi (of kiminozo: Suzumiya Akane, and the trap in Nanoha: yuuno scrya fame) to do the voice :D
Next week is ep25.
Is 25 like an epilogue of sorts, or is it a continuation of the story, or what?
Christen
2007-12-17, 22:32
Saikoroshi-hen would be nice ender for the 3rd season. I'm actually looking forward to the manga adaptations.
Or actually, they should do a remake of some sort in the future, this time with more complete details.
ep25 ihas been confirmed that it will be about the live action movie.
As for the 3rd season, it's good if they do the arcs from Rei or the manga side arcs, but I think there's one of the "true" ending that it would be awesome if they did it.
That being...Tebbayashi-hen :heh:

I'm looking forward to Season 3... Though I'm wondering what they'll animate. Saikoroshi-hen probably... then what? Though, like others also mentioned, there'd be a lack of continuity, I'd love to see Natsumi animated. Onisarashi-hen's one of my favourite arcs. And, of course, that would mean we'd see the return of the excessive "ketchup" we've missed oh-so-greatly throughout Kai. Besides, letting that voice actor for Natsumi which was hired for Daybreak Kai go? I think they should use her to their advantage! Huahahaha...

I'll give you 2 hints about it, and you can probably figure out what happens:
Hint 1:
Tebbayashi-hen was a fan made story that based on one interesting "theory" that came around near Tatarigoroshi-hen's time. A person posted on 2ch about how when he was playing Tatarigoroshi-hen, but he felt something was weird. When Keiichi was killing Teppei, Teppei barely put up a fight. Why would something who's way bigger, used to fighting, would be so easily killed by a teenager who is less built and study-orienated?
Of course, Keiichi having the bat is an issue, but it should not have been an absolute factor. It's not like Keiichi had a gun or a katana. If you think about the power of an adult vs. a teenager, Teppei should've had the upper hand. But why is it that Teppei didn't even resist (he did run away for a bit, but that's about it)?
"Should've been able to...no wait, now I remember...
It's not that he could not resist...it's because he didn't...
Even when the bat broke his arm or his forehead, he still kept saying that! That!
Without showing any fear, and with a slight smile on his face...believing that his next words would reach my heart...
That's what he was trying to do...
It's alright,
'Believe me...'" (rewatch episode 25 of season 1 if you don't know what this is about.)
Hint 2:
Teppei + Matsuibayashi = Tebbyashi :heh:

This just made my year.
I was drinking a glass of orange juice while browsing through the Higurashi thread, and almost spilled it all over myself when I saw this thread.
If someone tells me right now that he/she saw it coming, I'll call him or her a liar.
I hope it's going to be Saikoroshi-hen, since it basically follows Matsuribayashi :).
I figured there would be an OVA but not a third season because that would confuse people since Matsuribayashi finished the story.
But confusing people is Higurashi's specialty...

Is it possible that it may go the DBZ GT (eww) route and go on its own story that is not covered in one of the visual novels or manga?
What I would like to see is some sort of conclusion for the Nekogoroshi-hen special. Seeing no conclusion for the mystery surrounding the mine quarry just kinda...annoys me.:uhoh:
Though, at the same time, it's nice to still have something on Higurashi to think on after season 2 ended.:heh:

I guess you're right. When I first watched the special, it was a few weeks before I decided to delve into Higurashi Kai and wasn't long after watching the first season. I figured there was some connection between that and the business with the town massacre, but I didn't fully catch it. Ah well.
Still though, I can't help but feel that it could be fleshed out a little more, but oh well. *Shrugs.*
True Spyro, they could have "fleshed out" a bit more. Anyway the connection with the organization "Yaminau" to the village massacre was for an experiment. As it was stated when the "Queen Carrier" dies, the rest of the village will be affected (don't want to spoil it for the people who haven't seen the ending of season two). With that they were possibly going to use the Himazawa sydrome to their use.
Anyway if season three doesn't get cancelled. I hope they do the recent PS2 arcs and maybe do a comical relief episode with the extra arcs. I found the arc with Rena falling in love with Keichii hilarious.

First, please avoid usng "i heard" without bringing at least proof to your statement.
Furthermore, it wouldn't make sense to announce it as "third season of higurashi no naku koro ni" on the website itself.
As for Umineko, there isn't enough material to do an anime (granted, there is a manga, but they can delay it without much problem unlike an anime series), and your premise is kinda wrong: it doesn't have anything to do with kids and all.
It's supposed to have a similar premise to higurashi except they are a group of kids stranded on an island with mysteries.
and I'm guessing they have a "mystery machine" and a talking dog with them too and at the end of the day those meddling kids ruin the villains chances of scaring people off the island. XD
Anyways in regards to Higurashi if they wanted to do the PS2 arcs they should have done that for season 2 and then did Minagoroshi-hen and Matsuribayashi-hen for season 3. Oh well I know I'll enjoy season 3 and all but it just seems like there's really no point to there being an extra season now that everything is all tied up.

Minagoroshi-hen is included in Matsuri as well; they couldn't have skipped it and gone directly to Miotsukushi-hen. Besides, after what happens in Miotsukushi-hen it would be pretty hard for them to justify Rika being able to travel to other worlds.

Sterling01
2007-12-20, 09:24
It all depends on what arcs will be animated
Dice Killing Chapter- No Keiichi, Rena, or Mion (I think) but Satoshi is alive and well
Canal Drying Chapter- No Hanyuu for the most part
Demon Exposing Chapter- only has Akasaka and Oishi
Overnight Chapter only has "Mion"
Reality Breaking Chapter only has Shion
Whirligig Chapter has them all
Exorcism Chapter has them all
Warehouse Clearance Chapter has them all
Shyness Exposing Chapter has them all

Also Takano does escape the clinic in Matsuribayashi-hen
Is there solid proof to that?
Yes. Play the original game and you'll know.
Saikoroshi-hen has Rena. Keiichi and Mion shows up in the "real" world, so pretty much the whole cast is there.

That's because the "switch" between the twins never happened in saikoroshi-hen. And since you know what happened to "shion", you get the picture.
Sterling01
2007-12-20, 13:35
Since I have yet to play Saikoroshi-hen
Since the switch never happened is "Shion" still love-love with Satoshi? Also does "Shion" have the "Mion" character sheet"
theacefrehley
2007-12-20, 14:03
"Mion" is just normal with Satoshi
"Shion" never shows up in Saikoroshi-hen (both real world and "ideal" world)
And "Mion" in Saikoroshi-hen behaves just like the usual Mion (even though Rika noticed a bit of difference regarding "Mion"'s feel), what is to be expected.
Since Mion (whoever is in this role) is raised freely like a tomboy and Shion (whoever is in this role) receives a more "polished" education at that board school.

Well I only meant in regards to arcs like Taraimawashi-hen and Tsukiotoshi-hen. I'm just saying they should have covered those arcs first before going into Minagoroshi-hen, Matsuribayashi-hen, and Miotsukushi-hen.

Was quite the surprise to hear about a third season being on the way. Thought that things would be over with the second season. Great news though since you can't get enough of this group and series.
Just hope that regardless of whichever arcs they decide to animate that things finish off on a bright note. With everyone leaving the second season alive and fate busted up would be too bad for it to go the other way again.

Yay! 3rd season of Higu!!!
Anyway I'm pretty sure they are going to adopt Saikoroshi-hen in this one not sure about the other ones.
Remember the end of ep 24 when Rika suddenly shows up. She stopped Takano from losing her parents leading to series of chain of reactions leading to the perfect world.
This is just a random guess from some one who wish he could play the novel.:heh:
I don't know if this was covered better in the game, but I'd like to see an arc about Hanyuu's origins, since I didn't see much about it in the TIPS or anything like that. She's essentially the most mysterious character of the entire series.
Plus, she needed so much more screentime than she was given.
I'm thinking the third season will be called Rei since it was When They Cry 2.5

The two TIPS from the end of Matsuribayashi-hen (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?p=702626#post702626) explain Hanyuu's past. Also, Katautsuchi-hen touches on it as well.

When I heard the truth about Mion and Shion I was disappointed that it had been left out. I hope they'll find some way of having that in the 3rd season (doubt it'll happen though). I'd also like to see the demon tatoo on her back.

When I heard news about Season 2 last year, I was really, really excited for it. Now that I've seen everything, I'm not really *that* excited for another season.
Although I won't be a liar and say that I won't watch it.

It only gives us a vague idea of what happened. I was hoping for something with more detail, like they gave for the TIPS with the other characters.
Or maybe she gets a spinoff series... That'd be uproarious... (The Melancholy of Hanyuu Furude somehow comes to mind...)

I'd like to see a bad end "BUT.. THE FUTURE REFUSED TO CHANGE" and the cycle of rebirth is halted.

I am actually meh about this one. 20+ more episodes of the kids getting killed. And it seems they can't change fate. I will watch it but..ugh.
O well, gives me something to watch next year..along with many of the other continuations and remakes...

My opinion on the 3rd season is: look forward to it. The episodes that are left are quite meaningful. You won't be disappointed.
But will it finally be over? Or will they find something else to make a fourth. My main thought is...will it ever end? Before I wanted it to end with Rika finally getting her peace. Now I just want it to end, either with Rika forever being cursed, or whatnot.

I can't help but lawl.
I hope the third season is more closely related to the themes presented in season 1 rather than season 2. Season 1 had a lot more excitement, less climax. Season 2 had a lot of boring scenes but the climax was exciting. I liked the settings in season 1 though, onikakushi-hen was the best arc I could have hoped for and I hope season 3 follows in these footsteps.

Unless it's Miotsukushi-hen, I really don't want it. =/ As much as I love Higurashi, it needs to end...
I have to agree. At this point, it seems as though they're just trying to milk the series.
Will I watch it? Of course. :D

Season 3 can be entitled "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni? Nano desu!" (yes, the red "na"'s are included) and it will feature club activity batsu game mishaps (mostly by Keiichi being the loser and taking the punishment), some totally crazy and laugh-out-loud-inducing scenes, with some attempt at rom-com.
Now if that reminded you of that infamous FMP season, raise your hand. :D
That would definitely send the Higurashi saga down the drain.

If they did that + Saikoroshi-hen it'd be less harmful than trying to adapt the PS2 arcs or create more "serious" arcs, now that all the mysteries are solved.

On that note, I think a retelling of Onikakushi-hen through the eyes of Rena and Mion would be something I'd look forward to.

There's still the Dice Killing Chapter (Saikoroshi-hen) which is the epilouge of the Festival Accompanying Chapter (Matsuribayashi-hen) and the Canal Drying Chapter (Miotsukushi-hen) which is the "true end" of Higurashi that have yet to be animated along with other PS2 and manga chapters
I think this whole thing leaves hope for one of the most often unanswered questions in an anime:

I think what Hareoic meant was, not Mion/Rena going crazy like Keiichi did, but Keiichi's first "going crazy" from there eyes.
Personally I think that leaving that arc as it is would be more entertaining, I mean we KNOW what really went down so there's no need to animate all of it.
Hey maybe the third season will be a crazy shonen-type series based off of Daybreak--!? ... Or not. :D

As I said, it's from one of the TIPS which means that it's available in this thread (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?p=766752#post766752).
Breaking news: Higurashi season three chronicles Madoka's storied rise from college girl pub worker to traffic cop and wife of the intelligence supervisor! (I wish...)
I'm really looking forward to Saikoroshi being animated! (There haven't been any plans for a manga adaptation of that have there?)
Most of all I hope Onisarashi makes it in there, though I don't think it's that likely as it involves new characters and to do it justice (with all the wordiness) would take a good ten episodes.
Utsutsukowashi also doesn't seem that likely as, though Shion and Delicious are involved, the overall plot doesn't relate much to the rest of Higurashi.
Yoigoshi seems the strongest bet for the manga-exclusive arcs, which will definitely be epic.

Really? After seeing their excellent novel to series adaptations like Seirei no Moribito, I think I.G. Productions would do a potentially good work with Umineko. Strangely this comparaison seem to fit pretty well and still beeing soo funny.
Depressingly, that really was the best comparison I could come up with. Having attempted to explain the appeal of this show, and my mildly obsessive attempts at gathering up all the background info, to my friends I realized that there is no normal metaphor for it. I mean, they do not even explain why the hell everything keeps resetting until the second season. So, the first draw of the anime seems to be just the sheer mindbending wierdness of watching the children kill each other. Graphically. While reacting to a being that apparently is not there. With enough random moe to kill a bull at 20 paces.
Slightly back on topic, and not to enrage fellow readers, but it occurs to me that they have not really established Frederica as existing in the anime timeline, so do you thinks there is a chance they might resolve this in a different manner? Since a number of people assumed it was adult Rika and child Miyo meeting at the end of Kai, should we fear a great tangent occuring?

How do the Playstation arcs deal with the original ending? Do they just replace it with a new one or do they assume it took place but continue further on? I wonder how they'll deal with this revision in the third season...

I'm not sure what you're asking ...
In the PS2 version of the game, Matsuribayashi-hen is completely replaced with Miotsukushi-hen.
However, Saikoroshi-hen, the arc we think will begin the third season, is not a PS2 arc. It's a PC arc, and it's the chapter after Matsuribayashi-hen. You can't have Saikaroshi-hen without Matsuribayashi-hen, I believe, because of Hanyuu's role in it.
The show was Shijou Saikyou no Deshi Kenichi (History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi).

To be honest, I prefer the cute and funny side to Higurashi than the scary side. Hopefully, this season will have the arc where Rena swallows that magical thing that makes everyone fall in love with her. Seeing the girls try to (or managing to) kiss her will be something to see. I doubt she would mind if it was Keiichi, though.

Hopefully the third season will do Saikoroshi-hen... but I'm not sure what else they can really do.
Miotsukushi-hen is mutually exclusive with Matsuribayashi-hen... basically for it to happen, Matsuribayashi would either have to be struck from the timeline or for some reason Rika and Keiichi wouldn't remember any of its events. Or perhaps they could adapt it...
Miotsukushi, despite its somewhat more somber ending, is a lot better of an ending for Higurashi than Matsuribayashi, since it actually deals with all the various problems rather than everyone miraculously coming together... hopefully the 3rd season will be able to pull it off, even though right now I don't see how.

Pulling off Miotsukushi-hen is easy. All you need it to start off with a scene with Bernkastel talking about 'WHAT IF THINGS HAPPENED DIFFERENTLY' and there you go. Matsuribayashi-hen still happens, Miotsukushi-hen just becomes another possibility Bernkastel dreams up, and everything is fine.
I prefer Miotsukushi-hen to Matsuribayashi-hen but with the end of the second season , doing Miotsukushi might be too mush problem.

They could have Saikoroshi-hen lead into Miotsukushi-hen
SiRence~
2008-02-16, 02:42
yeah I think so too
because Takano escaped from the hospital in matsuribayashi-hen and still has the chance to kill rika, which will be after saikoroshi-hen I think.
Maybe, but I' m not looking forward to the ending
since Hanyuu gets shot!
They could have Saikoroshi-hen lead into Miotsukushi-hen
That would be impossible, as Saikoroshi-hen contuines on from the ending of Matsuribayashi-hen. Time line wise it would not work.
The other way around also wouldn't work, as we know what happens to Hanyuu at the end of Miotsukushi-hen.
Besides, doing Miotsukushi-hen would mean that they are going to have to repeat alot of the same material that was shown already in Matsuribayashi-hen. I rather they work on the material that they left out from the question arcs, and maybe just do a "fumoffu"-ish season. They can also work on drama-cd material...

Let's just hope they don't give Keiichi lines like the ones they gave to Battler in Episode 2
Battler: "It looks tasty. Please, take a slice of your damn cow tits and make a sandwich for me."
Beatrice: "Ba-........., Battler?!?! You,.... bastard,... you, ... you should have surrendered to me all the way until your soul became my furniture!!"
Battler: " That's what I planned. ...But while listening to your damn tasteless recipes, I got hungry. And I ended wanting to eat a whole roast of Witch!! And, Maria. You're like ten years too early to be saying lines like "eat me". However, ten years from now, be sure to say it to me, it's a promise.
Maria: "......Uh. I promise."
or
Beatrice: "Hu, huhahahahahahahahaha, you're in high spirits, I like it! That's how you have to be!! The Ushromiya Battler I like has to be like that!! Try to deny me, and I will crushingly defeat you thoroughly! I'll make you surrender as many time as it's needed, you licked my shoes once so I'll teach the flavor of the defeat as many times as it takes!!"
Battler: "Very well, Ushiromiya Battler will teach you that I'm a man who stands up even if sucking up mud!! There's no invincible trial in a fight for me. I've lost many times. But, you know, I'll certainly stand up even if sucking up mud. And then, I'll certainly settle things up!! In a man's fight, as long as you do not admit the defeat, no matter how much you are knocked out, you are not defeated!! Just because I was beaten, don't you think I'm defeated. I'll make you have have fun, Beatriceeeeeeeeee!!"

Mmmm, lets hope they decide to put saikoroshi in the 3rd season, I want to see how rika reacts to the perfect world hanyuu creates, also sukekomashi and hirukowashi would be really awesome and funny, I want onisarashi but could it be possible since almost all tragedy already ended? And I dont think miotsukushi is possible but I aprove the idea, and also want to see the "not so good ending" xOx
This scene (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1220980) is the only reason I want to see Miotsukushi-hen animated.
"Keiichi-kun and Mi-chan's baby. Hauuuuuuuuuuu. I want to take it home."
also whats up with that video? xD, あばばばばばばばばばば lol very funny
Actually, here's a thought: it's Higurashi no Naku Koro ni's third season. It's NOT, however, given the Kai suffix. Thus, it could actually detail events that happened BEFORE Kai (Onisarashi-hen, for example)
I'll make you have have fun, Beatriceeeeeeeeee!!"
aw c'mon I like Battler. He's a complete badass. Full of GAR and win just like k1
As for season 3 I'd like to see them do the PS2 arcs and do Saikoroshi-hen as a short OVA.
Oh my god, I can't wait for season 3.
WHERE THE HELL HAVE I BEEN??~
This is seriously awesome news, I check oyashirosama for the first time in ages only to find out there is not only a movie announced, but also a third season! Unbelievable! And I was just going to be so sad as I'm finishing up the second season right now.
Absoloutly awesome!
I really wonder what will be in it, lost arcs? New material? Crossover with new novels seems unlikely. I'd love to see the untold stories.
Awesomeness YES!!

Hellyeah, I'm feeling the same!
HIGURASHI, GO!
This has me wondering: I'm on episode 20 now, should I wait until release and watch season 3 before finishing the rest of Kai? It may just answer too many things even though I feel I can clearly see where this is going. So, as above.. Do you think waiting and watching season 3 first would be worth it?
Cause I'm burning for higurashi fix, but if the ending would be better having seen s3, then I'd love to watch it in that order.

Season 3 is probably going to take place AFTER Season 2... so uh, I don't really think so.

Well if you want to wait for season 3 to air and then watch the final episodes of season two go ahead. I think it would be better to finish season 2 and then wait for season 3.

There is no need to "hope" about it: it has been officially announced it will be broadcasted this year 2008, until they officially announce a postponed date (which is quite rare in anime industry).

Maybe....and I think I know what they will airing in the 3rd season.
I think other people would know too if they had read the Higurashi Manga.

What are you thinking; that they'll be adapting Onisarashi-hen and/or Yoigoshi-hen? I think that both of these seem possible once they're done with Saikoroshi-hen, though doing so would have the disadvantage that they'd feel rather disjointed (though admittedly not as disjointed as the pieces at the start of Matsuribayashi-hen) and the fact that the main cast of the series is mostly absent.

Yes I was thinking of both of those along with Utsutsukowashi-hen ( even though that might not be in the third season) and yeah it would be kinda disjointed. Even though we're not sure whats going in the 3rd season, I just wonder what the name of it will be. Like will it be Higurashi no naku koro ni Rei,or Matsuri, etc.
It would be logic to use higurashi no naku koro niRei if they adapt saikoroshi-hen, or higurashi no naku koro ni Matsuri If they adapt miyotsukushi-hen.

There's no reason they can't adapt both. Saikoroshi-hen is fairly short.

That's true it was long and Saikoroshi-hen was short.
Guess we'll have to wait until the name is given completely.
The name will probably tell a lot, but even then it'll probably only be named after one arc since they usually adapt several arcs into a season, if it's going to be a full 24/6.
From what people have written here ( since I haven't played the games) there is an arch happening right after the finale to S2, and then another one. If you include a filler arch (if they added one to 2 then why not 3?) and then maybe that origin story, that's 4 arcs, that's a whole season right there.
With arcs getting longer (I don't know if it's just Festival Accompanying in particular that is so long) even 2-3 arcs adequately spaced out could fill a season.

Neither of the first two seasons exactly ended on a sour note, so I'd say that a happy ending's pretty much assured.

Nah, it was still good, even then. The curveball it set up for you at the end was quite clearly a means of opening up the possibility for season two. If catastrophe struck, funding ended, or something along those lines, they could've edited the last bit out, and still ended up with a finished product.

In the visual novel you are presented with the casualties list of the great Hinamizawa disaster right after you get the ending of that chapter. Also, as far as I'm aware, there weren't any plans to make a second season when the first season ended. (Does anyone know for sure?) At the very least nobody expected one and no official announcements were made about it for a while.

Yes, there weren't any plans to make a second season. That's why DEEN included that scene during the first season end credits.

I can wait that long if its for this anime, worth my time anyway, if the arc they pick is longer then better, but if shotter then the story HAS to be interesting.
In other words, best is not to kill the anime with this season since most anime make you want to feel just sad of season 2 or 3

Not only the news section at oyashirosama.com, but also the official blog (http://blog.animate.tv/higurashi/) of the franchise both fail to mention anything concerning the third season being an OVA. This seems like it's simply a rumor.
It's listed in the June issue of Megami, in Frontier Works section.

In that case I guess the fact we won't be getting a full season puts to rest all the speculation as to what will be animated other than Saikoroshi-hen. Even so, I would be quite satisfied with just an OVA of Saikoroshi-hen. Since the anime ended with Matsuribayashi-hen and got a "now everything's fine, the cycle's broken" feeling (at least to me) it would fit the storyline. Or else the viewer would be like "wtf, why does she reincarnate?".
Nonetheless the more the better, eh? ;)

They should at least give us the SOUL BROTHERS to make up for the lack of K1 in Saikoroshi-hen. Or it would of been great if they animated the Higurashi no Naku Koro You ni series, which IMO is the superior "Saikoroshi-hen"

Not happening. They'd need a considerable number of episodes to animate Miotsukushi-hen, enough for at least a 13 episode season. If they were planning on producing that many episodes, why would they not show them on TV?
