Rika. Hands down.

The blend of her demure, cute "child" persona and her "dark side" was something else, and absolutely the most awesome thing in the entire show.

I would also throw an honorable mention in there for Kasai simply for having an awesome character design and voice actor. He reminds me a hell of a lot of the Washimine Group yakuza Ginji from Black Lagoon.

I voted for everyone except Takano. I really love the characters in Higurashi so much, to the point that choosing 1-3 favorites is impossible.

This season was all about Takano for me. The story behind her motives and her final defeat is what made the biggest impact on me.

I loved so many of the characters but if I should be critic the ones that made the most impact on me as persons are Mion and Keiichi.
Mion shows herself being a strong leader and a kind friend, both she and Keiichi really show their charisma in this season, which I enjoyed very much. Hearing them talk was the most inspiring moments.

Others who got votes are Satoko and Shion, Rika and Akaska; all of them for the warm family relation that they had between them. Especially during the last arc when Rika was overjoyed to see Akasaka coming to help them, and also when Satoko announced that Shion was her "ne ne"

Also Takano gets a vote beacuse she is a well thought through character, with thinking motives behind her actions, she doesn't just go out for "the sake of being evil I will kill you all." which you have seen in many shounen animes. There was actually very much understanding and reasoning behind what she did, and why she did it. Selfish, yes. But that is one of the most human traits in people.

I voted for Rika. I don't think I need to explain why.
Then, despite the fact that she's the villain in Kai, I voted for Takano because I pretty much felt sorry for her at the end of the series. I know she would have been a very nice person if only her parents hadn't died (Perhaps she would have looked like a grown up Lambdadelta :heh:).
And my last vote goes to Gin-sama (Other), because her making fun of Takano was just epic win.

Definitely Shion. The elder of the Sonozaki twins has proven herself beyond a doubt the most loyal character in the series, even if she wasn't given much screen-time. Just look at episode 22-24.

Higurashi has such a wonderful cast of characters who were all very well developed. It's hard to not vote for all, but I narrowed it down to three.
Rika: After what she's been through, she's definitely a favorite of mine.
Keiichi: I liked Keiichi since season 1, but I absolutely adored watching his charismatic and gar speeches in Minagoroshi-hen. Guy totally owned.
Rena: And sure, she didn't do much in Kai, but she's still my favorite Higurashi character.

Keiichi. Keiichi was always a cool guy in my mind, but he didn't show his true colors in the first season. His persistence and high spirit helped Rika accomplish what she set out to do, and he always looked good doing it.

Rena. Well, what can I say. I got a softspot for Rena, she's just too adorable and nice.

Shion. Barely made it in because of her limited screentime, but I still like Shion, I loved her in the fist season, and she's still very likable.

Rika. Rika's Rika, she's our fate-breaking, never-aging, pain-enduring, nii-pah-ing, lovable protagonist.

Hanyuu. Wo-ho-ho. Hanyuu was irresistible, she's even cuter than Rena, and that's saying something. I simply loved how she could change completely and show us her dark side, though, that really made her a great character.

Takano. Takano was a great villain, though I despise her for her actions, I admit she had determination and an iron will.



The rest of the cast is great as well, but it would sort of defeat the purpose if I included everyone, unfortunately.

Kai mostly featured Rika and not much of anyone else, so these are pretty much my first season favorites, plus Akasaka who was insanely GAR in Matsuribayashi-hen.

Shion's been my favorite since her hilarious debut scene and my vote didn't show ;_; edit: nevermind, I see it now :heh:

Keiichi - Keiichi is the hero of Higurashi. He made a lot of mistakes near the start, but he is also the first to learn from them, and then helps the others when they make the same mistakes. When Rena becomes paranoid of her friends just like he did, he is the one that convinces her to believe in them. When Shion decides tha killing Satoko's uncle is the only solution just like he did, he is the one that manages to convince her that they need to find a non-violent solution. And ultimately, he and Rika are able to save Satoko frm her uncle, which allows Rika and Hanyuu to learn the truth about Takano. It's only a shame he doesn't feature so heavily in the last arc, something I hope changes in the third season.

Mion - Mion is without a doubt the most loyal to her friends out of all the characters. She is after all, the only one that never loses her faith in them even once, something even Rika has done. Constantly throughout the years, she has made herself into a kind of caretaker of everyone else, constantly looking after them as the leader of the club, and her loyalty is put to the test in the last episode where she is willing to take a bullet for everyone else.

Rika - Rika has had a hard time. She's been forced to watch her friends succumb to Hinamizawa Syndrome over and over again and die over and over again, and she has no idea why any of this is happening. She has become disillusioned with everything, and wants nothing more than for this cycle of death to stop and finally grow older with her friends. Rika's struggle is the central part of the story, and it is heart-breaking to watch. However, Keiichi is able to show her just how important faith in her friends is, and eventually, she is able to conquer fate by believing in everyone else just like they believe in her.

Akasaka - I've been a fan of Akasaka since he first appeared in season one, even if it was only for two episodes. Just like Keiichi, he is one without ties to the village, which also means he is in a perfect position to help Hinamizawa with its problems. It was only unfortunate that Rika's message never got through to him until the very last arc. Akasaka's dedication to protecting Rika (and the totally badass way he did it) makes him one of my favourites easily.

Thank god this isn't a single vote thread, but still will be pretty tough to not vote for everyone :).

But really after having so many episodes and getting really involved with this cast picking the favourites is a pretty interesting trip. But think I can narrow it down to three characters and still be satisfied with it all.

Rika - Don't think I could make a vote on this series without giving one to Rika-chan. She really stepped into things in this series as the protagonist role shifted onto her. Finding out that through everything she had been battling hard against the tragic deaths of herself and her friends was touching. Really developed, dealing with grief and overwhelming despair of never being able to break through. But thanks to her friends and especially Keiichi finally was able to stand up and fight to the victory.

Keiichi - You really have to give him major points in this season. Started in the first as a guy who lost faith in his friends and succumbed to the syndrome in a tragic story. But stands strong this time as a catalyst for breaking the tragic fate that surrounded the characters. Showing Rika that it is possible to change things and you can't accept what is going to happen as being absolute. Showing his ability to change people in the rescue Satoko mission, bringing together the village for that cause.

Rena - For the final pick will have to give respects to Rena. Still was able to show her intelligence and ability to pick up things that is so useful to the group. She has her great moe moments that you just have to love that can disguise that at times. Plus she can swing a mean cleaver and still not kill someone. Her 'magic' in episode 2 was just worthy of mention in itself. Really grew to like her character even more than I did in the first season. Just behind Rika and Keiichi in my mind.

Some honourable mentions to Akasaka who came to the rescue this time and kicked everyone in his way. Also Hanyuu for just being incredibly moe. She did a great job of growing from a person who didn't think she could do anything into one who really came to the rescue at the end.

Anyway, for some reason I ended up liking the characters with less screentime more, so I voted for Shion, Takano, Irie and Ooishi.

Mion - My favorite Higurashi character, and possibly character in any anime, through and through. To me she's the cutest (with Hanyuu and Satoko in tough competition) and funnest out of the cast, with her shy side, her ojisan side, her cosplay crazy side, her leader side - all mixed into one just plain awesome package. You can't find other characters like her. And I think Rayneing said it best, she's the go-to girl if you want a loyal friend - just look at how Rena and Shion both went to her (over, say, Keiichi or an adult) when they were worried about losing it.

Akasaka - Because he kicks butt, takes names, and well... he's just generally really awesome. (and totally a descendant of a Saiyan)

Hanyuu - Most moe moe blob ever. <3

Also voted for Keiichi, Satoko, and Ooishi for various reasons. I already loved her, but Satoko in the first two arcs was just... yeah. Kei-chan for all the reasons everybody already loves him - master of words, man among men, and all that jazz. And.. how can you NOT vote for Mister Delicious? :p He's been one of my faves since waaaay back.


I would have voted for Takano, if only because she was an outstanding villain, except... she kind of became rather... pathetic come the last three episodes and any respect I had for her was flushed down the toilet.

The other characters were all great, but yeah, gotta only pick a few or there'd be no point to the poll, yeah?

Keiichi - Loved him in Season 1, loved him even more in Season 2. I looved his GAR and COOL-ness during Tsumihoroboshi-hen and Minagoroshi-hen. xD "K!!!!" Sure he made mistakes during the first season, but he learned from them as the worlds went by. I looved how he cheered up Rika by saying that you have to make your own fate or something like that. Love him so much! GO KEIICHIIII! :3 I was sad that the last arc didn't have that much Keiichi, but oh welllz.

Rika - When I first watched season 1, I was rooting for Keiichi all the way, but along the way I also climbed aboard the "LOVE RIKA-CHAN". I blame you Higurashi Kai. http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/x/xd.gif Though anyways, man dying so many freakin' times and only once has she given up hope until Keiichi saved the day. She's gone through so much.

Hanyuu - Even though I only knew her for one season, she's climbed into my heart. xD I just love her "auaus" and her dark side that was unexpected. xD Like RIka she's gone through a lot too in witnessing the events and feeling sorry that she couldn't help until the last arc. Au~

I actually only care about keiichi at all when he goes batshit insane. He was effing awesome in Onikakushi-hen and Tatarigoroshi-hen. Every other arc he was just annoying as all hell. =/

Actually, all the characters just become that much more awesome when they go insane. The knife-wall-throat scene from Meakashi-hen is still the most metal thing I have seen in ages.

Forgot to vote for Rika as well. The balance between her 'child' and 'dark' self was great. Her more darker self showed the pain she had to suffer. The ending you couldnt help but feel relived for her.

Takano's an excellent villain, which is why she got (one of) my votes. There are plenty of characters that are a lot cuter than Takano's younger self in Higurashi, so that's definitely not one of the factors for me.

I liked the effect, especially during the end of Watanagashi-hen where Keiichi admits that he was in the storehouse to her, in a very oblique manner. Her conversation thread there, while in her "normal" voice, was highly amusing.

I especially like it when she flips from voice to voice all of the sudden, freaking you the hell out.

I don't really care for the "desu" though. Too much desu.

Keiichi - Of course, the hero of Higurashi with no doubt the most interesting of personalities among the characters, IMO.

Shion - Not much screen time, but her loyalty to Satoko was just honorable and lovely.

Akasaka - Honorable and kick-ass. What more can you wish for?

Irie - His involvement with the Hinamizawa project was definitely one of the more interesting aspects of the series. I can definitely say Irie found an official fan.:)

I've voted for our heroes + Takano. I like every single club member, so I thought it would be mean to choose just 2 or 3 (just look at poor Satoko votes. T_T) But the one I most like is still Mion, for various reasons.
And why I voted for Takano ...? Shion and Rena would have easily scored my vote in season 1, but only Rika and Takano deserve to be the characters of the second season in my book, because the rest sadly didn't get enough spotlight. Shion and Rena however, are still my favourite characters of the story.

Hanyuu is and will always be my favorite Higurashi character, at first it was Rika since she was the cute and innocent one... or so it seemed at least, but when I found out about her ability to remember past worlds I still favored her over the others and was excited to see her do stuff that was rather mysterious. >=3

But then Hanyuu came into the picture, at the beggining of the 2nd season I was a Rika/Hanyuu fan... but by the middle or beggining of minagoroshi-hen Hanyuu just stole my heart! >w< She's so adorable and I can actually relate to her character more than any other character in this anime, Rika is still my second favorite but Hanyuu is first. Also her "Nanodesu" song just flat out rocks! X3 And when her eyes changed color and her serious voice kicked in, it just made me love her even more... she's just an amazing character in my opinion. ^_^

I also adore Miyoko... and her adult form, Takano too. And Rika's mom was pretty awesome even though she had a super small part... and ummm... well the part with Satoko just touched my heart I was rooting for her all the way! Stupid uncle of hers is too mean... and Satoshi is cool too and ummm... well if I keep going I'm going to end up listing the whole cast. X3

My favorites are Hanyuu, Rika, and Takano... and Akasaka was just amazing especially in that one part... you should all know what I'm talking about. X3 His first name definitely suits him. ^^

Keiichi - Really awesome, the first time, I cheered for him even knowing at first he was a scared guy and never did anything but cry, and in 2nd season he didnt let me down xD awesome character, Go K.

Shion - Always surprising me the first time something seemed fishy about her and always beeing that lovely, then she goes insane, in season 2 the relation she has with satoko is awesome plus that scene with satoshi (Ah and dont forget she can handle weapons xD) for me she seems like a winner :P

Rika & Hanyuu - Very interesting character enduring all that pain just to see everyone alive and happy, we all love rika what could we say T.T, and hanyuu well, hanyuu is hanyuu its all i have to say

Akasaka & Kasai - Kickass, very cool scenes akasaka fighting and kasai handling weapons

umm yea ok, after shiftng thro all of higurashi season 1 TIPS, i come to the conclusion that i am utterly confused, those TIPS just raises alot more problems, although i found alot of them some what interesting (specially the names of the families) i cannot understand the Mion/Shion thing.... (prob due to severe lack of sleep i have atm can't say i am thinking striaght), so bottom line, i don't get it .....

Basically:
Let's call the usual twins we know with their appropriate name, while their "place" will be "heir" and "little sister".
Originally, Shion (the long haired we know all the time) was the true "heir" of the Sonozaki, as being the elder of the twins, the first born.
However, both Shion and Mion disapproved how the "little sister" slot ("shion") is in a unfair situation. So both twins just swap all the time so both can enjoy the "Mion" (so "heir") position.

Unfortunately, one day, Shion was "shion" (so the little sister) and was oddly invited to a amusement park or something. Mion (who was supposed to the shion, the true little sister), received the tatoo, the proof of the heir of the sonozaki.
Because of this, Mion and Shion were forced to play officially their opposite original positions. Mion became "Mion" while she was supposed to be "Shion".

This is the reason why Mion was always guilty and feelign sorry for Shion, because not only she wasn't exactly well treated, but she kinda "stole" Shion's happiness. That is the reason that, when Shion became nuts, they "naturally" reverted to their true positions, and Shion literally became "Mion" (the heir).

2nd i dont think i will get too much involved in series with identical twins again.... (so so confusing)
3rd So the 2nd answer arc (Eye Opening) is just going into the details of how (Mion-Heir) did what she did in 2nd question arc (Cotton Drifting) instead of what i originally thought was an alternative world which switches the role of the twins, placing (Mion-little sister) as innocent and (Shion-Heir) as the murderer ps i think this is geting out of hand with the topic .....

Comparing these results to 07th Expansion's final Higurashi popularity contest (http://when-they-cry.net/Cgi/vote/ke5/ke5.htm) (here's (http://07th-expansion.net/ninnki.htm) a list of all of them) is rather interesting. In that poll Mion very narrowly came first over Rena and Keiichi was third with quite a margin, whereas in this one Mion is very far behind, though Rena has maintained her narrow second place. Rika fans got their revenge in the two Umineko popularity contests (1 (http://when-they-cry.net/Cgi/vote/umi1/umi1.htm), 2 (http://when-they-cry.net/Cgi/vote/umi2/votec.cgi)) though, where Bernkastel has gotten second place (and quite narrowly in the first one) despite having no part in the main story and appearing only in a hidden extra. Quite a lot of the comments are pretty blatant about voting her because of Rika.

i personally like most of the characters with rika and hanyuu being my two most favourite out of all of them. im surprised takano got alot more votes than i expected, i find it really hard to like takano, even thought shes one of the best villains out there, i hate that bitch more than ever when i watch the show.

These popularity contests are organized by 07th Expansion and are thus targeted towards people who follow the visual novels rather than the anime. The one I linked was conducted after Matsuribayashi-hen and Rei (as well as Matsuri) were released, so the participants would have been familiar with the events taking place in Kai.

Lessee... I voted for Keiichi, the Shmions, Akasaka, Mr. Delicious, Irie and Tomitake.

Keiichi is probably the most important character in the series, well, except for Rika's and Hanyuu's plot hax, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have liked this series as much as I do now if he wasn't there. He's hilarious and pathetic at the same time, uh, when he's not being insane or serious.

The Shmions are just lovely, I've always had a thing for psycho twins and green hair. (Though Mion (or is it Shion?) isn't really insane in any way) Personalities are also really cute. Mion's a badass tomboy, but deep down she's still a girl, and Shion may not be in her right mind, but she does it all for love~

And Akasaka, Mr. Delicious, Irie and Tomitake... :innocent: You can't deny that they're all hilarious in their own ways.

Keiichi - Keiichi is the GAR awesome charismatic speech-giving hero. I've always lied Keiichi. He learns from his mistakes between worlds, and his true colors are shown in Kai when he cares so much for his friends that he'd rather they live and leave him dying on the ground than stay and get killed.

Mion - Mion has always trusted her friends. She is loyal and caring, and always tries her best for her friends. She's an absolute role-model. <3

Rika - Rika, Rika, Rika.. She struggles so hard, ni-pah's, and is in general a very well thought-out character. She fights almost endlessly just to live happily with her friends.

Hanyuu - She is so cute, and she really grows when she decides to become a part of everything.

Shion - Shion has really changed a lot. She has become trusting of her friends, and even looked after Satoko. She's had a lot of development.

Rena - I've always liked Rena. She is a very complex character, and while she doesn't do too much in Kai, I've always enjoyed her intelligence, intuition, love for her friends, and let's not forget, her psychotic side.

Satoko - Satoko has really matured. I could see this when she called Keiichi her "ni ni" in S1 and called Shion her "ne ne" in Kai. She finally breaks free of her uncle's abuses, which was a big step for her character.

Overall, Higurashi has many amazing, fleshed out characters. I love so many of them. <3

K1 is just generally awesome, because of him Rika was able to push on foward & learn that fate can be changed.

Akasaka is... awesome too, it took him a couple arcs to save Rika but when he did, he UBER-PWND the Yamainu. Especially Okonogi.

I'm a massive Satoko fan, mainly because from what I've seen many people don't give her a break. Yeah she cried a lot, but come on, she was just a child then, a child that suffered massively at the hands of her family and the village and didn't know any better, what else was she supposed to do? Children aren't really known for their ability to handle tough situations well.
The scene where she gets tortured by Shion was really a stand out moment for me as to how awesome Satoko became. The fact that she had the balls to stand up for herself and not cry in that situation was pretty amazing and mature of her, hell I know when I was her age I would've cried if I just scraped my knee : P That as well as the fact she doesn't act ridiculously cute (the ni'pah desu's of Rika became overly forced and fake sounding to me after a while), her cheeriness and amazing Trap Master abilities make her my favourite!
I also voted for Mion and Oishi, cause they're great too :3

I've always had a big thing for Rena. I think its because of her sweet side, but also her hidden side. She just in a way such a complex character and I love that. Not to forget Adorable mode! Hauu! I love Renas Adorable modes! ^^
