I think you might find Yawara! (http://www.animesuki.com/series.php/183.html) worth a try. Like Capt. Tsubasa it is an older title. The main character is a girl (Yawara of the title), and the sport is judo. The series ran 124 episodes (I have only seen the first 39) - there was plenty of time in the series to develop the characters.

The judo in Yawara! is interesting - carefully explained and well-animated. Like all sports anime, there is a certain path for Yawara to take. But Yawara is unhappy about devoting her life to sports and part of the story is her search for a balanced life. There are also several romantic plotlines.

I found this series very enjoyable. It combines sports with romance and comedy. The main character is likable. The production values are very good for a late 80s anime. The show was a huge success in Japan; it was more popular than Ranma 1/2.

It's important to note that the Yawara Atlanta Olympics Special caps the entire storyline and so if watched out of sequence will spoil part of the story. It was fansubbed on tape and copies of digital captures may still be floating around - and I expect it will eventually be resubbed.

Prince of Tennis. it has the same aspects as Captain Tsubasa in that you get a pretty large cast that have their own personalities. plus its really really really good.

what are you waiting for? watch it :P

I remember a volley ball story , but I can only remember the french title : Jeanne & Serge.
It's pretty old though.

What about soccer- related animes?

I would suggest Wild Striker (http://animesuki.com/series.php/55.html).

The english name is "Attacker you!".

I agree, I think it's the best sport anime out there right now...

Whaaat? You're forgetting Hajime no Ippo, miles ahead of Prince of Tennis, in my opinion. Except it's about boxing and not any where close to football. Plus it just got licensed recently by Geneon.

Dont forget Whistle!. It's a good soccer anime better than Wild Striker in my opinion. The animation is also a bit better than Tsubasa or Wild Striker. Tsubasa was too kiddy for me.

You can try Slam Dunk. It's about basketball, so it may not be exactly what you're looking for, but it's one of the best in my opinion--right up there with Hajime no Ippo. Plus, the main character is damn funny in an Onizuka kind of way.
