View Full Version : Ookami to Koushinryou (Spice and Wolf) Manga Discussion
Opening this thread to discuss the manga for Spice and Wolf (Ookami to Koushinryou).
Its a story of a traveling merchant in a parallel world of early medieval times who meets a young harvest goddess who feels displaced by "modern agriculture" methods encroaching on her village. She wants to return to her birth place in the far north.
Its a story of commerce, religious transition, feudal times, and mostly about the relationship between two very different beings.
The manga is derived from a series of light novels and is being adapted to anime at the time of this posting.
Currently it is only available in Japanese in the magazine Dengeki Maoh (http://comipedia.com/magazine/dengeki-maoh) and started on September 27, 2007. Rumor has it :) that scanlations are being produced (ClockworkGiantPandas.com). Once manga volumes are published, I'll update this post with relevant information.
Please do not spoil the manga discussion based on light novel information or anime discussion.
It *is* okay (with me at least) if an adapted scene or moment is compared to its source material but not by spoiling future events. Tricky, yeah. :)
I'll edit this as I collect a few images and data bits: lifting liberally from Neosam's introduction to the anime thread for now. All credits to Neosam. Hope you don't mind :)

Based on a light novel shounen series that is published under the label Dengeki Bunko (http://comipedia.com/light-novel-label/dengeki-bunko). For now there are 6 volumes released of the light novel.

Shounen light novel.
少年向け小説(ライトノベル)
Author: Isuna Hasekura
Illustrator: Juu Ayakura
Genre: Shounen (light novel), Seinen (manga), Fantasy
There's a translation, up to 3 chapters I think
Aye, I know... just want to make sure its okay to link to the scanlation effort. (4 chapters and an adult doujinshi)
Aye, I know... just want to make sure its okay to link to the scanlation effort. (4 chapters and an adult doujinshi)
Does it agains the TOS?
That doujinshi was hilarious, "Tail Feel Good!".
That doujinshi was hilarious, "Tail Feel Good!".
*Is tempted*
The doujinshi was both funny yet a bit disappointing. The author (not the translator) really wasn't interested in building up the tension before getting to the clinical stuff :) The dialog is also pretty lame (again, not blaming the translator - I wouldn't have been able to resist temptation to rewrite the dialog). Note: the doujinshi is "x-rated" but with the usual black bars to keep the Japanese Image Police from swooping down on them.
Back to the manga (doujinshi aside), AS is pretty strict on what gets linked so I just want to review the rules before linking to any scanlation sites, and yes, Claes its a good idea to review them since you've just joined :)
AS = animesuki
duh
Anyway, for the manga, since it's a slice of life (I don't feel it like a seinen, maybe a little), and since I only read it for 3 chapters, I can't give any rating/review rite now
It is being published in a seinen magazine (though the light novel source is under a shonen tag).... I can't see it being utterly fascinating to young boys unless they're budding economics or feudal studies fanatics :) yet there we are.... but I really couldn't give a flip how it is labeled.
The rules seem to say unlicensed *scanlations* are okay (unlicensed raws= not okay, licensed scanlations=not okay), but I'll wait til one of the mods responds to my self-report before I step into it (I've made tactical errors in the past here :) ).
We don't really keep track of manga licenses, we're primarilly an anime site after all. You will have to check other sites to confirm if it is licensed or not, I'm not aware of an English release and ANN (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=8538) doesn't mention that it has been licensed either.
thanks, I've been googling/browsing and came to the same result.... if someone has it licensed, they're in submarine mode.

Ohh...I was actually going to open the thread myself tomorrow if someone haven't already done so...nice vexx ;)
Just read through the first 4 chapters and the changes are fairly significant compared to the first ep of the anime...
My my...so they turned the guy in the manga into the girl, chloe for the anime. An interesting transformation which will bring about some events worth looking forward too - why do I get the feeling that they did that just to make lawrence suffer the sting of live? :heh:
Anyway, another bit chopped out was the first meeting. Whereas in the anime lawrence seemed rather freaked to see her "real form", I'm quite surprised that he manages to keep his cool in the manga. It's as if he is presented as being more mature here than in the anime - which rather goes with the voice as well :heh:
Horo is complete love! So far the anime is doing a nice job of her "perky" personality...yet it is a shame that we lost some of the drama concerning her when the first encounter scene was miss out. She is a lot deeper than she is presented in the anime, hopefully this can be corrected. Watching her cry like that is a pain >_<
The next two chapters would probably be covered by the next ep of the anime. The nude scene was rather innocent I'm surprised to say. We know how horo doesn't really care about her nake image but for lawrence to 1) not feel embarrassed 2) to strip in front of her as well...makes me wonder just how mature is this guy! He isn't a normal man in other words :heh:
Looking forward to reading more ;)
So...how many chapters are there out so far (RAW versions). I want to see if there is some catching up to do with the scanalations or not ;)
ps. Horo chewing on her tail...epix win!

The Spice and Wolf manga has not been licensed yet. It is still a very young effort, only four volumes have been published so far (at least I think, as I haven't found raws of the fifth yet). #Moob and #Musashi are scanlating it. I help Moob on their doujin (so far I've only edited the Horo doujin, the version without "TAIL FEEL SO GOOD"), so I'm biased towards #Moob's releases. Let me know if you guys find any other SaW doujin.
Dengeki Maoh is a primarily seinen magazine (also published in it is the Persona and Disgea 2 manga, along with a lot of other stuff I don't recognize). SaW is seinen, tentatively categorized as romance or adventure (it doesn't really fit in either category very well).
ClockworkGiantPandas.com is just a hastily-made compilation of everything Horo-related stuff I've found that's worth downloading. It's made possible by you guys, because I'm not very good at keeping up with new releases at whatnot.
Thanks for making the thread, Vexx!

No problem ;)
I finally read the discussion in the anime thread, and replied here (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=1339295&postcount=327) to hopefully clarify things out.
Does anyone know if the 5th chapter has been released in Japan yet?
That doujinshi was funny. :D

Dengeki Maoh comes out on the 27th of each month. #Moob released volume 1 chapter 4 on January 1st, five days after Decemeber 27th. A new chapter isn't due out until the end of this month. :(
That doujinshi was funny. :D
Musashi's version of it was, and now it's a semi-meme (at least whenever SaW comes up on certain message boards). Moob's is less funny in translation, but the last page is still entertaining in either version. ;)
Oh this is a monthly manga, I should've known by the release schedule... I guess I don't mind if it keeps up the high quality of the art.

Doujinshi: HAHAHAHAHA
Okay, I'm hooked onto this series.
That Doujinshi was funny indeed "I am certainly more suited for dominating a man" :heh: ...but it has the problem of almost all H-stuff, that horrible representation of Sex, and I don't mean the graphics.
Anyway if I were Lawrence I couldn't resist from stroking Horo's ears all the time.

i dont know why (most likely because im fond of koume keito H drawing) that i always turned on of his way of drawing horo (pervert mode) lol, koume keito's other safe for work manga is kujibiku unbalance which are even more similiar to his hentai style..

He was an ex-erodoujin artist. What do you expect, man? It's cute and mildly sexy, just like everything else he's drawn so far. Wee. ;)
He took the way a wolf/canine would eat something they liked (with great gusto and messiness) and translated it into a cute young woman/wolf-goddess would do it.
The result is both a "doggy" mess and yet vaguely erotic :) I'm a bit disappointed that more of the flavor of that page wasn't able to be adapted to the anime. The anime mostly seemed to focus on her canine-like utter focus on hworking down the apples.
I would like people to pay attention to the final panel and question to what purpose and intentions posses Kome to depict the way Horo glutton down the apples ?
I'd say, she's just still not used to the tight thorat of her human body and eats more like a wolf.

I happen to find a link claim to have Volume 1-5
Is it possible? I havent check it because I have slow (VERY) connection
There's no "volumes" yet... only chapters (of which there are 5 I believe of which 4 have been scanlated). Now the Light Novels are a different story...

anyone have a link to the raw? i'd really appreciate it.
I don't think we can directly post links to raws of manga or anime (forum rules). But if you'll check the first page or two - there are links that will indirectly but eventually get you to what you seek.

For many files associated with Spicy Wolves (including manga scanlation) -> this site is very useful at time of post: http://clockworkgiantpandas.com/
It does lead to some NSFW files so proceed accordingly. Currently, only the first five chapters of the manga adaptation are scanmogrified.

EDIT: Ooh, manga has nipples. :D
Oh... just for you nipple fanatics -- the manga has full undisguised nipplage in the color frames (unlike the novel illustrations).
The novel illustrations, the manga, and the anime all have *slightly* different art styles. The manga style jumps around a bit depending on the moment.
Overall, the manga's first volume is quite entertaining and puts an even more mature spin on the story.

You know, I bought the first volume of the manga yesterday (it was released only recently in Taiwan), and when I went back and compared the volume illustrations to those of the online scanlations, I noticed that the nipples were conspicuously absent from the latter. Not that it really matters, but I can't help wondering, were the nipples added exclusively for the volume release?
Oh, and btw, it's not just the color frames. The black-and-white illustrations have them too.

It's seems like Mood is gone for good (Nothing new), hopefully some other group picks the manga adaptation up :/
I was really looking forward to seeing how the manga contest, art 'n stuff would be different from anime and light novel. The illustration is quite mellow and I like it, but Horo seems a bit too child / loli-like, even though her figure isn't that bad at all.
^^
Well, just gotta hope for the best.

I don't think recent issues of the magazine the manga was serialized in have been carrying new chapters of the manga, though I'm not sure because I haven't ponied up the cash to import those magazines yet. I think I will tomorrow, to be sure. If I'm right, either the manga got canceled or it's only being released in volumes. I may be completely wrong, though. :)
That would be A Sad Thing. The manga was pretty decent in terms of artwork and story adaptation. I'm at least hoping for a complete rendition of the first adventure.

With volume 1 of the novels scheduled for a Dec 2009 release, I'd say it's very likely the novel's release will beat any anime release. Even if a distributor is found for the anime before then, it's unlikely a DVD release will happen before then, especially if the series is dubbed. If the series isn't going to be dubbed, it might could happen. But in the current economic climate, I have my doubts about the timing.
Wow, so cute.
Nora appeared at last!
The episode of current number of Dengeki Maoh is an original story.

Much <3 for that one! =]
That is.... a very distracting cover for #3. In the words of Igor (Dorktower): "It MUST be mine!"
Just a reminder - the first volume of the S&W manga translated to english by Yen Press is due out in April 2010.
There have been 3 volumes released in Japan.
This is at least 90% manga related, so I figured I'd throw it out there to see what others were thinking, but...
As I had been exploring the net for fan fiction (which I generally like because these people try to reflect the nature and personality of the characters and tend create good material and take stories in a direction that has/had not yet been explored or maybe had not yet been explored to such a degress that they tied up loose ends), I stumbled upon the dozin style.
I was not familiar with this particular form of story coneyance, since I have never really gotten into a particular manga, anime, etc. Sooooooo, I downloaded scans of them and was shocked as to how all the stories I opened spiraled into ummmm... a shallow, graphic, physical encounter, which was rather degrading to Hol(r)o. Prior to this, I was unaware that the dozin typically followed this format.
I don't think myself prudish, but I really, really, really did not like seeing Hol(r)o drawn and written into such a situation whether or not it was even remotely consentual. Obviously, the solution is for me to simply follow the canonical manga and avoid these , but I guess I just really don't like seeing a character I love being depicted in this way.
I am aware that the arguement could be made that I have imposed onto her a framework of behavior and morality that I follow and consider desirable, and may not represent the value system she holds if I spoke with her creator, but...
I have discussed this with other folks recently, but I figured I would mention it for anyone who wanted to share... what say y'all? I really don't mean for this to become heated, so if this is determined to be even a touchy subject, I won't be upset if someone wiser and/or more familiar and in charge of the forum shuts this line of discussion down as I do not want to be a source of conflict and woe for others here.

I find it's hard to get upset about it. To begin with, it's tough for people to find the time to invest in writing good quality fics, and for someone like a doujin maker (who may want to make a buck while they're at it) it's often easier to find an audience who wants fantasy/wish fulfillment than something in-character and canon. And of course, wish-fulfillment often takes the form of hentai, which isn't everyone's thing.
On the serious side of the fandom, it's especially difficult to find good fanfics for something like Spice and Wolf. It requires a great deal of effort to be convincingly consistent with the original work in something like this without rely on lame stereotypes or obvious characterization (such as Lawrence = merchant twit doomed to fail, Horo = flirty action girl saving his ass).
In the end I say live and let live. There are some surprisingly good fics out there. For instance, I really enjoyed this one (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5290045/1/Wolf_and_Bird_in_the_Night).

Explicit doujinshi is endemic to almost every series in existence - Spice&Wolf is no exception. It doesn't matter HOW innocent the source material is - someone has done a XXX fan manga of it. In fact... more than a few manga artists have done such doujinshi of other works themselves - which results in some quality work (XXX or not), some of which gets officially published in authorized collections.
I've probably seen the ones you came across and yeah... they were pretty shallow. The authors didn't seem to grasp that some more effort into the premise/storyline would increase the authenticity and ergo the eroticism.
I *will* say that, on average, japanese doujinshi does a better job of keeping characters IN character (unlike a lot of Western fan fiction I come across for series like Star Trek or whatever).... but.
But doujinshi are most definitely NOT canon... either they're wish-fantasies... or perhaps speculation about those "between scenes" moments. A lot of them are pretty immature or amateurish.
Forum rules don't forbid discussion of doujinshi... but links to unlicensed material must pass "PG-13" requirements to keep AS marginally safe for all ages (haha... yeah, depends on the clues of the parents).
As usual, a license rights holder may request material be taken down (though I've not seen any anime/manga rights-holders go after fan art, image snaps, wallpapers, etc yet). The final say is up to the OWNER of the AS site - so if you have doubts about a specific link, I'd say ask a mod about it.
Edit: oh and you don't have to worry about the Holo/Horo thing...
If the romaji fight is that bothersome just type ホロ. :)

It is very difficult to find fanfics for a series like Spice and Wolf. Being a fellow fanfic writer myself, the hardest thing is to stay true to the characters of the original story. This is especially hard for Spice and Wolf, since the series involve a lot of character development through interactions and dialogues between the 2 main roles. Capturing Horo's personality and respones is the greatest challenge for a finfic writer for this series, which deter a lot of authors because the fic is as a good to the extend of how well you are able to capture the 2 main roles personalities and interactions. Also, the setting and the focus on economics also limits the flexiblity and creative space for the series. The series is hard to write a fanfic on because it actaully requires a good and interesting plot, and a considerable amount of thought to the contents of the story, unlike those fanfics related to Shonuen fighting series.
You are missing a "/" in the closing quote tag.

No problem, well done in multi-tasking by taking care of multiple things in a single post!
Yeah ホロ does kind of take care of the issue...
I guess what I find frustrating is that when I read a novel or manga or anything, I like to be able to relate to a character and put myself in their place. So, when I saw those I felt frustrated and even embarassed.
On top of that (and I know it was touched on but), when the set-up for a story is "Hey, since we're at an inn..." or "Ummmm... I'm feeling a little hard up, so... you wanna go at it?" I really don't relate well to that, because if I were to somehow in end up in that situation, I would likely find myself chewing on the head board of the bed, praying for a cold shower, or looking for a pastor FAST to perform the short, short version . Of course, as a friend had already pointed out to me, given ホロ's relationship with the church that last one likely wouldn't be an option.
I'm completely okay with the idea of them sleeping together but Lawrence takes the responsibility strongly in a medieval sense. Any scenario that would be *believable* would have to take their complex relationship into account and their principles on the matter. Most doujinshi don't --- and often read like they were written by a horny 13 year old who doesn't *get* all that (sorry, if I offended any mature thoughtful 13 year olds there).
A doujinshi that took the trouble to set up a believable scenario before they made love would be quite the feat (and it would be whole lot more erotic).

True, any series where characterization is predominant tends to be difficult to write for. I don't think that the "economics" concept is a major issue, though, unless the fanfic writer WANTS to focus on that aspect of the series. It would be just as easy to write about any medieval or traveling issue, and there are plenty to go around. It's just too convenient to fall back on trope plots like bandit attacks, especially when there are so few fics to begin with.
I'm actually a bit disappointed that more people don't try to write from OTHER character's perspectives. Not every fanfic has to be about Horo and Lawrence interacting, especially since it's so difficult to capture this aspect of the series. That's why I like the one fic I linked to above - it was a treat to fill in the gap of what Horo and Dian talked about, even if it wasn't necessarily canon.
I guess what I find frustrating is that (snip) I like to be able to relate to a character (snip) when I saw those I felt frustrated and even embarrassed.

Not to trivialize the discussion, but to me it feels like demanding a narrative from porn. Of course not all doujin are porn, but the problem is that the vast majority are intent on simple wish-fulfillment themes. I suppose you could always fill in the dialogue using your imagination :)
Still I do agree, it would be nice to find a few doujin, clean or otherwise, that put some effort into the characterization. It's always fun to see someone else's interpretation of the canon when they put some ass into it (and I think I'll keep the unintentional double-meaning there just for fun).
Its mostly that plotless porn stopped impressing me long, long ago. Put a story into it with believable characterizations and I'm there with popcorn.

Hahah, and yet I dont think there are many of those on the market ;)
A relationship between Horo and Lawrence, at least further into the future would be decidedly possible, but I dont think this sort of 'story' will ever manage something with as much depth as these two characters though, they just don't/won't put enough time and effort into it, and whilst they may manage to stay true on one aspect, they will undoubtedly lose somewhere else.
Besides, I dont massively feel the need for it with this story at all, Im happy just finding out what happens to them, the story is heartwarming and endearing enough as it is, without adding this sort of stuff to it, because I dont think we need to have this stuff inferred, they love each other, shes a wolf spirit (and procreation is part of nature) and he's a man...I dont think it was ever a question of what might happen in the future off page/screen, but do we need to be told? :p
On a related note, the S&W forum has been a bit dead the last week...glad to see some life in here again :D
I have to agree about the whole issue of the necessity of things to be inferred. And to borrow from another thread and play off their post (though their's was a in a totally different context), her name is ホロ not whore-o.
I guess that's what bothered me the most... the fact that there are some people who follow the story be it the anime, LN, or manga that I do, but feel they need baseless erotica. In my opinion, she is seductive and sexy enough in all three without the need to make her beg for physical action or placing her into an overtly sexual situation that has nowhere to go but down (literally and figuratively I guess). Also, like I said, to each their own... I don't mean to impose my moral code and beliefs on others. I guess I was just bothered by seeing her say things I would not expect (Vexx, your analysis of these stories seemed to be spot on); the one that curled my toes the most was seeing ホロ saying something along the lines that there was no need to worry about kids if they are just going to engage in sodomy.
I don't expect her to say something like that, and I definitely don't want to ever hear or read her saying that. *Get out of my head you horrible thoughts*
I don't think I have totally or clearly expressed what I mean since we got this little discussion going. It would take me a 15 page dissertation to adequately and in an organized fashion explain things. I know my posts have probably frustrated others because they say to themselves, "But, x, y, and z, thus 1, 2, and 3." I guess in short, I agree that a physical relationship is in general the natural result of a long-term emotional relationship, and while I would like the characters to be together... I don't need fans to tell me their fantasies of how and when their first or subsequent encounters will happen. Especially when ホロ reminds me a lot of someone that I still hold very dear, though we are no longer together. I know it's a dance of a modified transference and counter-transference between me and a given author but still...
I think this is as close as I can come to expressing my feelings on the subject without going on something misinterpreted as a tirade. Thank y'all who have participated in this discussion with me and allowed for the exchange of thoughts on the subject thus far.
Have a nice cup of hot tea and some cake :)

Or coffee :D Get a good caramel latte down ya with an extra expresso shot and you'll be raring to go again :D
Horo doesn't particularly remind me of my ex's, she's a very different character, but as I say above, we have the stories which are heartwarming enough, we can imagine where that might go if we want to, in fact in some ways its an almost inevitability for the future if they continue to remain close, based around who and what they are, if they get close enough. BUT I dont feel we need to be told that, it's not the focus of the story, the story is about thier emotional relationship, not thier physical one (which as of book 1 extends to some finger poking and one horo-crushing hug, a few hints of a crush [and associated body signals] from Lawrences monologues and thats about it :p).
Besides god knows why anyone pronounced it whore-o, it's Hoh-row as a more literal way of writing it (with a tiny hint of a d between the first sylable and second because of the way you role your tongue as you say it) . I think people reading it that way just reflects thier own minds :p

Well there are exceptions like Studio's Kamigabuchi's 'Re-Take' (Evangelion doujin) which I think is deeper and better written than Sadamoto's original manga.
Or Monkey's Taste (yeah funny name) group of doujinka's that write Evangelion oujins that are very deep and do not have any sex in them.
There are some good doujins around, some even better than the original source, but they are rare and usually get lost in the sea of porno trash.
Hi all,
S&W is one of my favorite anime/manga/novel these days and situations and ideas about how it is going to be, keep appearing in my mind. Therefore I also started one fanfiction (which I also posted somewhere in this forum some month ago if I remember correctly). But as some of you already said, it is pretty difficult to meet the right tone in case of the behaviour and conversation between Lawrence and especially Horo. ;)
But nevertheless, if you are looking for some (clean) fanfiction, you can go here:
http://www.fanfiction.net/anime/Spice_and_Wolf/
I havent read too much stories there myself, but it seems to be an interesting place. ^^
When it comes to doujins I abandon all hopes for story, comprehensible character behaviour and logic. It is just used for "satisfaction" of the more "animal" part of the mind. Therefore all the S&W doujins I know of (...and Im pretty sure I hold every little piece that ever faced the surface of the internet :naughty: ) have not disappointed me at all. It just depends on what you expect.
BUT there is one doujin of S&W that surprised me both in case of quality and "story". It is called "D.L. Action 43" and is even available in english. Compared to the usual fan-mangas it is pretty sophisticated and as someone already pointed out, an interesting plot doubles the erotic part. I can recommend it... :D

Yeah, some of those on that site there are pretty good. A couple were just meh. I am happy to see most were able to keep it clean. I stumbled upon that site about a two months back and then some folks around here mentioned it again. I'm glad to see people are still generating material for this. I'd really hate to see this series just die and be forgotten, doomed to cult status.
Well, *that* probably won't happen as long as the novels are being churned out... but I picked up one of the "official" short story manga collections by other mangaka - arrived today. Some amusing stuff.
Its the one with the rather saucy cover of Horo. Lots of color plates - all by artists and authors via random side-story or what-if bits.

I'm afraid that may not happen. From what I've been told (and I have spoken to several folks both in the US and abroad), it is unlikely that this one will get a translation as these "official" books rarely do. I guess there is a small chance if fans outside of Nih. express such an interest and sales of the canonical manga are consistently very strong.
And speaking of that, if anyone is interested, I maybe be able to help you out in getting some semi-canon material that will likely never be compiled into volume form and thus are near impossible for most people to get their hands on. So, anyone feel free to PM me if interested.
I think that's legal... if not, mods please delete that last part of my post, so I am not infracting the rules.
Stupid regulations... why does the government have to ruin the book cover and make me feel guilty for buying this. I don't want it for the "explict" stuff.
I want it because I like the series... why do they gotta make me feel like a pervert by putting a stupid warning on the cover. You just can't walk up in somewhere and buy a book like that with such a warning without getting a few looks... thank goodness for RS.
But still... that warning box is an eyesore on an otherwise nice cover.

Bleh, thats a shame too, the actual cover isnt that bad, and they could have put the warning in a more subtle place.
Im guessing its because of Horo's frequent cases of 'out-of-clothes-but-doesnt-care' during some of the early sections of the story, and the manga is apparently a bit more direct than say the book (which itself was a little more direct than the anime but not much).
Book 2 in 3 months :D

Um, wow... what a lame and misleading warning. I stamp that mark "fail".

Actually, I don't think there's any government mandate for content labels on manga in the US. And yeah, it comes across as kind of obnoxious. It's not like it's porn or anything, it just has a smoking hot naked wolfgirl in it.

Not to mention a girl who looks underage by US sensibilities. In today's increasingly chilly environment towards visual depictions of underage sensuality, be thankful that a black obnoxious mature content label was the only thing that was added.

I'm not really sure where the "looks underage by US sensibilities" is coming from, because from the chapters I've read she looks like she might be underage.
"Looks underage by US sensibilities"? On what basis? I don't remember anything in the chapters I've read that would give that impression. Besides, she's also flatter in the anime, whose content warning consists of a tiny TV-14 symbol in a corner on the back cover.

Lets be fair ... by *some* people's sensibilities in the US (granted... very *loud* idiot ones). But "underage" means anything from 14-18yrs IN the US. It depends on what state you're in. Not that the screamers realize that sort of thing either....
Whatever... medieval sensibilities allowed for anything capable of having babies being "eligible".

Meh, those people will likely be the same idiots who decided you can MAKE porn/babies before you can watch it. Funny really when you think about it! ;)
Horo is meant to appear around 15/16 in human form though IIRC, so I can see why the label has appeared, because with the way things are these days, companies have to cover thier backs.
Its all fun and games when it comes to politics in this area, and not just in the US.
I just find it frustrating that they put a warning on it because I'm not trying to get any jollies off this.
Yeah she's beautifully drawn, but that is all. And also, even if she does "appear" to be 15ish... I thought that in most of the canonical artwork she looked (for lack of a better term) "legal" and on top of that she is well beyond that age anyway, though Tyr makes a fair argument about companies having to cover their backs.
On a semi-related note, I know a few girls who look quite a few years younger than they are, so...
Also, I'm very conservative, but I'm not seeing the point of warnings and censorship here. People will find a way to pervert something one way or another if that is their goal. So, in this case, providing warnings such as this just makes it even easier for someone like that to look for something to pervert!
But, I don't know where I'm going with this now, so I'm going to stop typing.
The original Japanese manga is catergorized as a seinen manga, meaning it is targeted for 18-30 years old male audience. The companies that translated the manga probably stamped the misleading warning label on the manga to show that this manga was meant for an older audience to keep it consistent with the original japanese version, as the manga was definately not designed to target teens under 18 years old.
But I must say, they could have thought better ways to do that, instead of making the manga look like a trashy cartoon porn book.

In the past, everyone just stuck a 16 or 18+ warning label on the back and maybe shrinkwrapped the book if it they were really worried.
Although I guess shrinkwrap isn't foolproof. My girlfriend once pointed out to me a non-shrink wrapped copy of Kannazuki no Miko while we were browsing a local Chapters, the implication being that someone had removed said shrink wrap. For those that have only seen the anime version of KnM, I'll just say that the manga is a little more explicit in parts.
