If you liked Tenjho Tenge, watch Ikki Tousen (1st season) and Ikki Tousen: Dragon Destiny (2nd season). It's practically the same. Student heirarchy, inter-school fighting and politics, hot women and fanservice.
Crest of the Stars and Banner of the Stars I, II and III. Great space opera with a sense of epic scale, yet concentrates almost solely on the main characters. It has a very relaxed feel most of the time, then hits you with great ship-to-ship action.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. The ultimate action mecha show. Even if you don't like mecha, I bet you would love this show nevertheless. It's all about bad-assery, and physics aren't just broken, they don't exist in the first place. It's the ultimate GAR experience.
Inuyasha is a action/fighting/magic show. You’ve probably seen it but I’ll suggest it anyway. It is quite long, though if you made it through Naruto maybe there’s hope. If you can stand comedy, its older predecessor Ranma ½ has martial arts blending into a school comedy.
Record of the Lodoss War, pretty much Tolkien style swords and sorcery.
Tales of Eternia, Tales of Symphonia , Star Ocean Ex, Ragnarok the Animation. All of these are based on role playing video games. Ragnarok is pretty serious that said…characters die. Star Ocean Ex and Eternia are more comedic. Symphonia is somewhere in between.
Princess Mononoke. The main character decapitates several people with arrows in the first moments of the film. Need I say more?
Ninja Scroll. Considered a classic action flick by many. It is quite graphic however.
Spice and Wolf is probably too slow for you, but it has pretty impressive animation and is one of the most interesting shows this season. And while the main character isn’t locked in episode long fights, it portrays a realistic fantasy world, beyond merely defending ones self. I’ve been particularly impressed with the humanizing of the characters.
Tsubasa Chronicle Tokyo Relevations. Beyond the two seasons, there’s a 3 part ova (only 2 are out). If you watched and enjoyed the series, this is a must. They basically start revealing a tiny portion of the real plot to Tsubasa..
These have female main characters, be I’ll suggest them anyway. If you are completely sure you don’t want to even consider them, stop reading this post at this point.
On that note, I’d suggest Cardcaptor Sakura. Yes, it has no fighting though it does have action, -- you are familiar with the characters already because you’ve seen Tsubasa Chronicles--Syaoran and Sakura‘s original work. The opening sequence is the hardest thing to get through but after that it is pretty impressive.
Scrapped Princess. While there’s a female lead in this anime, her older brother who travels with her is a pretty amazing ally and does plenty of fighting. It is a very final fantasy feel with lost tech and magic blended together.
Ruin Explorers a short and decent ova involving all kinds of crazy dungeons, pretty funny too.
The Vision of Escaflowne--a fantasy mecha story. While the lead is female, enough focus is put on Van that you won’t be too disappointed. Discount the dragon animated in the first episode, it is pretty much the worst animation in the entire series. Has neat airships too later on, a stable of any fantasy world.
Magic Knights Rayearth, done by Clamp who did Tsubasa/X, it is an RPG like story, where the main girls while girls are teleported to a land to save it. It has a huge twist in the story and is also a mecha anime, meaning there’s plenty of action.
Astraea the Good Witch of the West--it is very shojo in many ways, however it also has some pretty graphic torture, and while the action scenes are pretty few, the scope if it was impressive.

I'll second Full Metal Panic! and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann as great mecha series, and I believe both are better than their similar Fullmetal Alchemist (For Full Metal Panic!, the share both Full and Metal in their names, and for Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, they both attemped to bridge action and drama, though Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann was much more successful in this manner, and also incorporated much more romance as well.)
And yes, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is the most epic mecha series ever.
Code Geass is also a good mecha anime series that gained much fame for both "Pizza Butt" and its epic trainwreck, both of which I'll leave to you to comprehend. It's an intelligent series with good mecha fights (Though I'll warn you in advance, they're ugly compared to Full Metal Panic!'s. They have rollerblades and shoot strange hooky things.), still, I wouldn't pass it off just because its mecha design. You'll probably enjoy it, and there's a second seaason soming this Spring.
All three series have (a) male character(s) as their lead(s), and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann's characters are so manly that you'll litterally feel the hair growing on your chest, and it'll make Kenpachi of Bleach seem like a kitten, Edward of FMA seem like a mouse (which he is), and the characters of Naruto seem like grass.
And Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is a great series for someone who dislikes female leads. It's a slightly action-type series in which the true main character is a male, but there are also several female leads as well. As someone who dislikes females, you may revel in the fact that many of them die repeatedly, you sick b*stard. Ah, but I jest. It's a great series, though, it's gripping but in return, none of it is episodic. You'll have to marathon several episodes in one go, since you probably won't be able to leave; a good bit of advice in advance is to watch one arc at a time, and start another only if you know you have enough time to finish it, as it's difficult to stop watching during an arc (unfortunately for me, I began watching its second season unknowing that the first arc was twelve episodes, so I spent a good five or so hours watching it from beginning until end, and what a watch it was.) Speaking of which, the first season may leave you confused, but the second is too good to spoil.
