This thread is for the discussion of the fan project entitled “The Genderbending of Haruhi Suzumiya”, where we will be attempting to reconstruct the series as if Haruhi was a boy, Kyon was a girl, and everyone else’s genders have also been turned topsy-turvy.

Illustration Guidelines:The following only applies to images submitted as illustrations for the rewritten novels. It need not be said that other fanarts are always more than welcomed.



Something on the illustrations for all the Suzumiya Haruhi volumes:

1. The cover features one character.
2. There are three color illustrations per volume that are based off elements from the said volume.
3. The last color illustration, the prologue flap, always features Asahina-san the mascot.
4. All lineart illustration take up one page.

Minorin's Chiaki voice would work too, and I think she could handle the tsundere transitions if she's given enough time to work on it.

Given Haruhi's lack of inhabitation, and her general "cluelessness" of gender sensibilities in the first novels, it is not far-fetched to have her counterpart be unwittingly "cruel" to girls, not because Neo-Haruhi is a MCP, but because he really sees equality in all genders.

Neo-Haruhi flying-kicks the CSP: "Woo-ha!"
CSP: "Nani!"
Neo-Kyon: "You kicked a girl?!?!"
Neo-Haruhi: "I kicked the threat to our brigade! *glances at cowering CSP* Oh, it's just you."
Neo-Kyon: "Is that all you got to say?!?!"

So long as we realise that we are doing a parody on a what-if situation, we should be more than capable enough of laughing at the resulting absurd situations that will occur.

As for the blackmail scenario, it can still be a case of "molestation", as Neo-Mikuru is meek enough for this to be a plausible explanation. The difference is in the implication. For guys, it implies forcing themselves on a girl. For girls, it implies that they are being slutty and whorish.

There's been people talking about Kyonko sporadically since Haruhi managed to hit big. Even during Comiket 71 onwards, a small of doujin on Haruhi have featured the gender bending Kyon. There's even the radio drama CD which has a segment that turns every member of the SOS's voice to that of Haruhi's if you would count that as gender bending.

However, the gender bending thing has taken off somehow as of late.

i just realized something....
in the original... Haruhi never turns down anyone who confessed to her, but would dump then later on. And because of this, NO ONE dared to go out with her anymore... because of this type of "anti-social" behavior (for the lack of a better term) is what made kyon talk to her (not forgetting haruhi always ends up behind him) and thus giving her idea about the brigade...

Personally, I think the names from that one blog are a good idea... although writing the names using a different character set works for a Japanese reader, it doesn't work for an English one.

Every now and again, an idea for writing pops into my head and then I spend an awful lot of the day idly dreaming up plot points, things people would find amusing, things people would find epic, characters, places, events, and then my boss tells me to stop spacing out.

Maaaa... Still, this sure is inspiration worthy. How many people are going to jump in with their own ideas and premice? Whoever origionally came up with the genderbend in the first place is probably giving themselves a right pat on the back, what with having created an anime fad with one of the most popular series in the world. Hey, I just got an idea about Haruki's past relationships with girls...

Haruhi got sick and tired of dating guys because they always did the same thing when they went on dates with her... why don't we do the same thing with Haruki?

Like the girls expecting candlelit dinners, sweet nothings, etc. Stuff guys find boring.

So he finally got sick of it, and stopped bothering to chase after girls who thought like that.

Enter Kyon-ko, a girl with a lack of interest in romance at all.

Then Haruki's all like: "A WORTHY CONQUEST!"

I'm working on the assumption that it's one of Haruki's anti-alien (or was it pro-alien) measures, like the different hairstyles Haruhi wore before she cut her hair.

Otherwise I may as well say that it's a pair of headphones or something. Which would lend a certain horrible wordplay factor into "Haruhi/ki only listens to what s/he wants to hear".

There's not really a lot of variations I can think of in changing the characters' names, which might lead to a sort of "Kaneda" situation in the days of Ranma 1/2 fanfic (when a ficwriter wanted to gender-bend Akane into a guy, the name used was almost always "Kaneda"). Some of the New Names are too obvious not to use: Yuki becomes Yuuki, and Ryoko becomes Ryou (although I've seen Ryouta).

As for Haruhi, there's the thread favourite Haruki, and I've also seen Haruhiko, which might be doubly confusing due to the differences between "Haru-hiko" and "Haruhi-ko".

Mikuru I've seen rendered as Mitsuru and Mikuru-in-kanji, but for my story I think I'll call him Asahina Minoru.

Itsuki I don't know how to deal with. There seems to be Itsuki-in-hiragana, or Ichihime. I'm probably just going to be lazy and call her Koizumi Mitsuki.

And while I know that "Kyon" should probably just remain "Kyon", I am so very tempted, based on the whole "what nickname Kagami should have" discussion in Lucky Star, to name her "Kyou".

I can just imagine Haruhi as a man now (Some possible candidates):

1. Yoichi Hiruma (Eyeshield 21), one of the better leads of all the manga I've read

- Both manipulative, though Hiruma still wins

2. Jan Akiyama (Tetsunabe no Jan), one of my top five favorite characters of all times

- Both quick to anger (Well I'm not sure about Haruhi in the later novels)
- Always ready to show off

3. Neuro Nōgami (Majin Tantei Nōgami Neuro), who's quickly working his way up towards being one of my favorites

- Similar in that nobody can really defy them
- Both manipulative

4. I don't know why, but Luffy D. Monkey (Duh One Piece) came to mind, but maybe that's because I'm running out of examples

- Luffy and Haruhi are similar in that they do things by their own rules and they don't conform to society, plus they're both pretty oblivious to the consequences of their actions in general (i.e. stupid)

Edit: I brought back some of the posts where we tried to define the characters. Let's start coming to an agreement on these, and then I'll put in some of the finalized results in the thread's intro post.

I've got it to something like this:

Suzumiya: A hot blooded young lad with skirt chasing tendencies, and surprisingly has scored with many girls primarily due to how good-looking he is. However his short attention span leaves him disinterested in pursuing relationships very far. Kyon-ko has interested him in that she does not reciprocate his advances, making her the only girl worth really going after.

Nagato: A slender, serious, no-nonsense megane shounen of few words. Kyon-ko is intrigued by his mysterious nature.

Koizumi: An intelligent and philosophical young girl with an impressive chest. She is extremely flirtatious, and has taken quite an interest in Kyon-ko.

Kyon-ko: A tsundere character with an underdeveloped chest. How does she view the world around her?

Instead of bunny girl costumes, Haruki and Mikuru would be dressed up as Hard Gay.


Since I was asked to throw in suggestions, here's some:

Suzumiya Haruki ("Haruki" in kanji instead of hiragana for the masculine feel): Hot-blooded youth, eccentric genius (I can stand eccentric people, but not idiots)

Kyonko: Her real name is unknown. Long ago, an uncle just called her "Kyonko-chan" and the nickname stuck to the point that everyone, including her little brother began to call her that, much to her annoyance.

Asahina Mikuru ("Mikuru" in kanji): Timid shy anorexic boy, trap. Fits into any costume, male or female.

Nagato Yuuki (different kanji for "Yuuki"): At first glance looks like a timid bookish boy, but is more than meets the eye. If he wasn't so emotionlessly quiet, one would think he would blush even more than Mikuru. Discards glasses after saving Kyonko.

Koizumi Itsuki ("Itsuki" in hiragana for feminine feel): Bright person, can be talkative, brains of the SOS Brigade. Neither admits nor denies yuri feelings for Kyonko.

Tsuruya-san: Gorgeous rich kid with a generous sense of humour.

Asakura Ryou: The idol class rep all the girls adore. Your typical shoujo manga guy idol.

Kyonko's brother: Your typical cute shota little brother.

Kimidori Emiri: I have no objection to the available fanart

Kunkida: Retains his male counterpart's "femininity", though of course now a girl, thinks like one of those generic girl sidekicks in shoujo mangas

Taniguchi: The girl sidekick that constantly likes to show off in order to impress guys. Should design her less like her male counterpart and be more moe, though not surpassing Kyonko or Itsuki.

Computer Club: No objection to fanart

Asahina Mikuru (big): Matured and "manly" in a shoujo manga way, not the muscular tough guy. Still retains his "cuteness". I'll let the yaoi fangirls do this.

Arakawa (in governess costume): I'm thinking of Miss Maria from Mai Otome

Mori Sonou (elegant butler): Hayate the Combat Butler?

I'd change that first line to: A hot blooded young man with skirt chasing tendencies, and surprisingly hasn't scored with any girls. His like of "the chase" precludes any serious commitment to any relationship... though his good looks keeps the girls coming for more. Kyon-ko changes this because of her general disinterest of him and his ilk. Used to all the attention the girls give him, he starts to get intrigued by Kyon-ko's disinterest... (and wonders why the heck she looks so familiar!) :D

The boy twitched nervously at the click of the lock. He was small and slim, looking more like a middle school student playing dress-up in a North High uniform. His brown hair was tousled in a strangely irresistably compelling way, and his large puppy-dog eyes cast around with a silent appeal for help. Overall, he'd be pretty cute, if he didn't look so scared. Actually, he looked cute anyway, especially when scared.

"W-where am I?" the boy said tremulously. "What is this place? Why have you brought me here?"

"Shut up."

The boy flinched at Haruki's sudden threatening tone, and gave an involuntary yelp as Haruki pounced on him, a companionable arm around his shoulders, a huge smile beaming on his face. "This is Asahina Mitsuru," Haruki said, gesturing with his other hand.

I waited, but Haruki had apparently finished talking. What, that's all for the introduction? "Where did you kidnap him from?" I said suspiciously.

"I didn't kidnap him," Haruki protested. "I just made him come with me."

Isn't that the same thing?

"He was off daydreaming in one of the second year classrooms," Haruki continued, "so I grabbed him from there. I've seen him around a lot of times, and I figured that he'd be perfect for our plans."

What plans? "Doesn't that make him an upperclassman?" Asahina Mitsuru certainly did not look like one, but I was probably in no position to talk.

"So what?" Haruki said belligerently.

Probably best not to argue too much with him, or he'll revert back to his grumpy gangster persona. I glanced back at Nagato; he was still buried in his intimidating doorstopper of a book, and appeared to have exactly zero interest in Haruki's abduction of another innocent victim. Asahina-sempai, meanwhile, was hugging himself, frightened and trembling, and certainly unable to defend himself. "Okay," I said, "just why did you go all the way to find Asahina-sempai?"

"Just take a look!" Haruki slapped Asahina-sempai on the back with some force, causing him to stumble towards me. I took an involuntary step backwards, and Asahina-sempai ended up grabbing the edge of the table for support.

"See how weak he is?" Haruki declared. "See how easily he's defeated? What he needs is guts! Guts and courage! If you have those, then you'll never be beaten, but if you lack them, then you'll never amount to anything! You won't be worthy of being called a man!"

"T-that's cruel," Asahina-sempai sobbed. "I-I'm a man too, you know..."

"Oh? Is that so?" Haruki grabbed Asahina-sempai again. "How much of a man are you, really?" His eyes grew mischievous, and his hand strayed down to...

I wasn't sure who screamed first, but I like to think that it was Asahina-sempai, because that's less embarrassing for me. "Stop that!" I shouted, keeping a distance from the two guys. "What the hell do you think you're doing? That's sexual harrassment!"

"Hey, you know, this guy's actually pretty big!" Haruki said brightly without a trace of shame. "Wanna feel for yourself?"

"No way!"

Haruki finally released Asahina-sempai, who sagged onto the ground, exhausted. "If we can turn that into the epitome of manliness," Haruki said, pointing at Asahina-sempai, "into a Man among Men, then the rightness of our cause will be proven! It's all part of the plan!"

Like I said, what plan? "Is that the only reason you abducted Asahina-sempai?" I asked wearily. Don't look at me like that, Asahina-sempai, I can't bear to look into those eyes...

"Well, I thought we could use him to advertise our club too. Kind of like a mascot character or something like that."

Haruki is an idiot. A very dangerous idiot.

"Hey, Mitsuru, you in any clubs?" Haruki demanded.

"Um, the Home Economics club..."

"Ah, just quit it. It'll get in the way of our club activities."

Asahina-sempai turned his gaze onto the still-silent person sitting in the corner of the clubroom, who gave him nary a glance. But Asahina-sempai's eyes widened in surprise, and he gasped.

"I... I understand," he said, in the tone of voice usually reserved for the utterly defeated. "I'll quit the Home Economics club, and join your club..." He hesitated. "But I'm not sure what the Literature club usually does..."

"Oh, we're not the Literature club," Haruki said.

"The guy sitting over there is the real and only Literature club member," I explained. "We're just temporarily borrowing the room for whatever club Suzumiya Haruki wants to create sometime in the near future. We don't know what our club name will be, much less what our activities are.

Asahina-sempai blinked slowly in astonishment, his mouth hanging open. Yeah, that's a predictable reaction.

"I've already thought of the name!" Haruki exclaimed. "That's the most important part of forming a club!"

I turned my glare on him. "Okay," I said, injecting as much skepticism into my voice as possible, "let's hear it."

Haruki took a deep breath, in preparation for the momentous revelation of his grand vision.


Names are easily changeable with a search-and-replace. I just hammered this out on a whim, because Inspiration Cannot Wait.

Suzumiya could literally pick up Kyonko and carry her off. And something tells me the Asakura world segment will be a little tricky. We already had a bit of a discussion on whether the weapon should still be a knife.

Kaisos recommended Speedos as a replacement for bunny suits. I still have no comment there.

Anyway, currently I'm actually kind of stuck on a certain scene. Or, to be more precise, a certain scene which the anime completely skipped over, since it didn't matter that much.

It's the one where Kyon meets Yuki at the park, Yuki takes them to her apartment, gives Kyon the infodump, and the Kyon goes home. Simple, right?

Except that if you do the genderswap, Kyonko meets Yuuki at the park, Yuuki takes her to his apartment (the comedy of which was already featured in an earlier 4-koma), Yuuki infodumps, and now Kyonko has to go home alone in the late night darkness.

While the actual danger in reality may or may not be exaggerated, this is sometimes crudely known as "asking for it".

I'm not sure if Yuuki will be versed enough in gentlemanly behaviour to escort Kyonko home (to the astonishment of Kyonko no Otouto, perhaps). Another option would be for Koizumi to mysteriously arrive to pick her up, which would require a bit of shuffling around of events.

EDIT TO ADD:
And something tells me the Asakura world segment will be a little tricky. We already had a bit of a discussion on whether the weapon should still be a knife.

I'm imagining that Asakura would have no weapon at all.

Well, as far as weapon changes... I don't see any reason to switch from a knife. Granted, bare hands ARE sonething to be scared of, especially when he's already proven that not only can he seal off the room, but Kyon-ko suddenly can't move at all.

On the other hand... At that state of vunerability, if the bastard's holding a knife, you know what's going to happen. You're getting shanked. Bare hands though, makes it a question of how exactly he's going to do it.

But then, knives are efficiant (My spelling sucks people, if that's wrong), and that's why I think either gender of Ryou would stick with it. Slit her throat, and leave. No questions asked, and plenty of time to get away before they are.

Also, no matter what happens, Yuuki has to have a badass level equivilant to Sephiroth's when he comes in to the rescue. Killing Kyon-ko is sin, pure and simple.

...It doesn't help matters that I was still a Yuki fanboy before this happened, I guess...

Sometimes people ask me when I stopped believing in Santa Claus. Really, this kind of silly question, to me, doesn’t hold any real significance. However, if you were to ask me when I stopped believing that the old man wearing the red costume was Santa, then I can confidently say that I have never believed in Santa, ever. I knew that the Santa who appeared at my preschool Christmas party was a fraud. When I sat in his lap, I didn’t feel the eyes of a kindly old man looking down at me. In fact, it felt slightly disturbing to be sitting in the lap of some random old guy and espousing your deepest wishes. I was already wise enough to be suspicious about the existence of an old man who worked only on Christmas Eve.

However, it took me quite a bit longer to realize that the aliens, time-travelers, sailor girls, demons and espers in those effects-filled 'good guys versus evil organization' cartoons didn't actually exist either. No, wait, I probably did realize, I just didn't want to admit it. Deep inside my heart I still wanted those aliens, time-travelers, sailor girls, demons, espers and evil organizations to suddenly appear. Comparing those worlds to this boring, normal life of mine, those flashy worlds win every time; I wanted to live in that world too! I wanted my life to be filled with excitement!

I wanted to be the one who was kidnapped by aliens and imprisoned in a bowl-like fortress. I wanted to be the one saved by the handsome prince and taken off to live in castles happily ever after. Or, changing genres, I wanted to be someone who could banish demons and monsters with a single spell, engage in telepathic fights and save my one true love from danger!

But wait, calm down. I don't even have any special powers! None of the guys I knew in my classes did either!
Well then, how about this: one day, a mysterious new student transfers to my class. Except he's really an alien or from the future, and he has telepathic abilities. Then I’ll make friends with him, and his enemies, sensing a weak point, will come and kidnap me for ransom. Then he’ll come and rescue me and I can just sit back and wait. Oh my god, this is great, I am so clever!

Or maybe, if that doesn't work, how about this: one day, a mysterious power inside me awakens, something like a telekinetic or psychic ability. I discover that a lot of other people in this world also have similar powers, and then some sort of paranormal society recruits me. I'll become part of this organization, receive a talking animal companion and protect the world against evil demons!

Unfortunately, reality is surprisingly cruel... No magical prince came to sweep me off my feet. I've never seen a UFO. My dog never talked, even when I fed him alphabet soup. Two hours of intense staring didn't make my pencil move a single millimeter, and glaring at my classmate's head didn't reveal her thoughts to me either. I couldn't help but get depressed at how normal everything was. I began to stop watching for UFOs and paying attention to magical girl cartoons because I finally convinced myself it was impossible. I even reached a point where I only had a sense of nostalgia for those things.

After junior high, I completely grew out of that fantasy world and became utterly grounded in reality. Nothing happened in 1999, even though I kept hoping, just a bit, that something would; humankind hadn't returned to the moon or gone beyond it. I suppose, from the way things are looking, that I'll be long dead before you can book a round trip from Earth to Alpha Centauri.

With those sorts of ordinary, common thoughts in my mind, I became a normal, carefree senior high schoolgirl. That is, until…

Also, RmX, that scene that he's referring to in Vol 2. is the one where Kyon tries to hit Haruhi... somehow we're going to have to change that.

Wow, great thread. Somehow genderbending REALLY fits SHnY. In fact, all seems to click into place beautifully when it's bent. I'm going wild imagining it. ^^

As for Asakuro attacking Kyonko...yeah, he's gonna look like such a bastard. But that's fine. For a weapon, definately something bladed. Katana would work, maybe an ornate rapier. Maybe have him accidentally slash away some of Kyonko's clothes to add nosebleeds in the scene that will follow. Other characters needing makeovers...well, most is already processed. I think Shamisen (Sanshin?) will work without a bending. :P

It's getting late. If I go to sleep now I'll be sure to awaken with some kind of insight.

Hmm. On the topic if more shoujo-esque influences, we could modify the sci-fi elements a bit to make it flow a bit better. The only other thing I have is "sailor girls" should be "magical girls".

I couldn't help but get depressed at how normal everything was. I began to stop watching for UFOs and paying attention to magical girl cartoons because I finally convinced myself it was impossible. I even reached a point where I only had a sense of nostalgia for those things.

After junior high, I completely grew out of that fantasy world and became utterly grounded in reality. Nothing happened in 1999, even though I kept hoping, just a bit, that something would; humankind hadn't returned to the moon or gone beyond it. I suppose, from the way things are looking, that I'll be long dead before you can book a round trip from Earth to Alpha Centauri.

With those sorts of ordinary, common thoughts in my mind, I became a normal, carefree senior high schoolgirl. That is, until…

Kyon-chan is surprisingly cute. :) Haruhi-kun is a bit Kyon-looking, as I see it. She seems to be Kyon with a hairband... But, I just love female Kyon and Itsuki! ^_^
